I've got this colleague at my day job who keeps saying infuriating things, but they are so funny in the context of the fact that evenings and weekends I'm making a Sherlock Holmes computer game.
Me: Oh yeah I'm learning Javascript at the moment. Him: Pff you don't want to do that. You're an artist and graphic designer, that's where your strengths are, I think you'll find computer programming really boring, it's not for everyone. Me: *looks at fourth wall and shrugs*
Me: I read this really interesting paper about a project working with dementia patients, where they guide them through making a memory map of familiar places. Him: Ooh, like Sherlock Holmes and his mind palace. Him: See, Sherlock Holmes has a mind palace. Him: But I'm sure you don't read those sorts of books, you wouldn't be interested. Me: *Sitting on a zoom call, with my collection of Strand magazines and signed picture of William Gillette very visible behind me. Opens mouth. Decides I don't have the energy. Closes mouth.*

mom avoids dead anime mom curse because he transitions. he’s always had a complicated relationship with pregnancy because of how woefully little people are told about potential complications and aftercare, and also because of how gendered it is, so after the birth of his second child he’s finally had it and decides to transition
he joins a local community group for mothers and at first it’s played for laughs how often they fall to the dead mom curse, but soon we find out more about how society has failed mothers and people who give birth, from information being withheld, procedures being carried out without consent, lack of accommodations and maternal and paternal leave, racism…
it also turns out that becoming a man doesn’t help with this, not really, because being a pregnant trans man brings its own problems. follow along as he learns more about being a parent and a mother, and maybe even… finding love???
coming to you never because I can’t write!

Here's another open access book on JSTOR y'all might find interesting:
Sugar, Spice, and the Not So Nice
This title offers a wide-ranging and geographically diverse book-length treatment of girlhood in comics. The various contributing authors and artists provide novel insights into established themes within comic studies, children's comics, graphic medicine, and comics by and about marginalized ethnic or cultural groups. It will appeal to students and scholars of childhood studies, comics scholars and creators, and those interested in addressing gender identity through the prism of comics.

How did they do computer graphics in 1927, when there were no computers?
At the end the face changed to a woman's face. The film Metropolis, year 1927. 🤔

as someone with a passing knowledge of knot theory & a dilettante interest in math I'm really interested in the behavior/rules of those graphs, could you talk a little more about them?
this is my first ask! and it's on my research!!! i still do research in this area. i am getting my phd in topological quantum computation. i saw someone else talk about categorical quantum in response to the post. as i understand, this is a related but distinct field from quantum algebra, despite both using monoidal categories as a central focus.
if you're familiar with knot theory, you may have heard of the jones polynomial. jones is famous for many things, but one of which is his major contributions to the use of skein theory (this graphical calculus) in quantum algebra, subfactor theory, and more.
For an reu, i made an animation of how these diagrams, mostly for monoidal categories, work:
https://people.math.osu.edu/penneys.2/Synoptic.mp4
to add onto the video, in quantum algebra, we deal a lot with tensor categories, where the morphisms between any two objects form a vector space. in particular, since these diagrams are representing morphisms, it makes sense to take linear combinations, which is what we saw in the post. moreover, any relationships you have between morphisms in a tensor category, can be captured in these diagrams...for example, in the fusion category Fib, the following rules apply (in fact, these rules uniquely describe Fib):

thus, any time, these show up in your diagrams, you can replace them with something else. in general, this is a lot easier to read than commutative diagrams.

Thoughts about the Minecraft movie trailer?
Imagine if it had all been filmed inside of minecraft, SMP style. It would be so funny to see the most intense scene and on screen its just 🧍‍♀️🧍🏽‍♂️
The trailer is...... something. Not something good, but it definitely exists. What a timeline we live in.
Does anyone know what the like to dislike ratio looks like right now?
