Let Go of the Reins || CHAPTER 9

summary Australia is considered home for two of the eight members. When two tour dates are scheduled for the land down under, the boys can’t help but want to spend a bit more time there to visit family and do a little sightseeing. So how do they convince the company that they need to stay a couple weeks? Filming some SKZ Code episodes.

A local riding school just outside the city with amazing reviews for their skilled instructors and beautiful horses is hosting a very popular kpop group to film their experiences. Y/N knows the group well and she just so happens to be their star working student.

The closer you get to your seats, the harder your heart hammers in your chest with excitement. You’re being escorted from backstage, once again weaving through the bustle of staff working to make sure the show goes on without a hitch. Until you can hear the loud murmur of the crowd. A sea of other Stay ready to watch the boys in action.

The woman in front of you stops when there’s only a curtain separating you from the electricity in the air. “Duck down a little when you walk around. The staff wall should be tall enough but Stray Kids-nims asked for us to be extra careful,” she explains before pulling the curtain and holding it for you and Liv to follow.

You spare a quick glance at her, to which she flashes you an eyebrow wiggle that makes you chuckle, before the two of you mimic her posture and follow closely behind. The stage proves bigger than you expected it to be since you can feel the ache in your spine from being hunched over for so long by the time you make it to your seat.

The two chairs draped in black satin are waiting beside the sound booth. If it weren’t for your guide signaling for you to sit there, you definitely wouldn’t believe these were meant to be your seats.

As soon as you’re seated and left alone by the staff, you lean over to Liv and whisper, “I’m going to kill him for doing this.”

“Pfft! No, you won’t! This is incredible and you’re going to have the time of your life!” She snorts in reply, digging out her lightstick from her bag and waving it in your face to tease you.

It would be pointless to argue with her since you know she’s right. So you settle for an eye roll as the corner of your mouth twitches upwards in amusement. What’s the harm in enjoying this amazing gift Seungmin and the other members have prepared for you two?

You and Liv relax into your seats, chatting excitedly about what you could expect from the show when your phone buzzes in your pocket.

And he does do great.

The first leg of the show is more than you ever could have hoped for. It felt like the members were purposefully taking turns hovering in front of the sound booth, aka you and Liv. But two in particular seem to fight over that section of the stage.

A few times in particular, Seungmin would crouch down when he sang his parts. As if it were only the two of you in the room. It made your heart pound and squeeze all at the same time. Each time ends with a member coming to pull him back into the moment before he gets you found out.

You wonder if you’d care, as long as he was still looking at you that way.

The laugh that bubbles out of you though at the blush covering your bestie’s face when Changbin does the ‘I Like It’ dance directly in front of her would have been embarrassing if it weren’t so funny. And you don’t miss Seungmin’s pout afterwards either.

Another thing that’s hard to miss is how he makes a point to “protect” Felix from the others. Every time one of them tries to sneak up on the long-haired boy, he’s there to botch their attempts. It makes you giggle how much he took your words to ‘defend the sunshine’ so seriously. He really does earn his title of a loyal puppy.

A fleeting thought passes through your mind that he deserves a reward after being such a good boy.

As soon as Seungmin exits the stage, Hyunjin makes his appearance. You’re fully prepared to watch and enjoy his set when a staff woman comes rushing over to you, quiet as a mouse with her hands urging you to come with her. No matter how skeptical you are, she seems very insistent that you follow her.

You turn to your best friend beside you. “I’ll be right back,” you try to tell her, still having to shout for her to hear you.

But she’s so distracted by Hyunjin’s performance that she shoos you away with a ‘Yeah yeah, go on already.’

Shrugging your shoulders, you get up from your seat and join the staff lady as she leads you to the little door you’d originally come through. It seems like her urgency doubles as you’re being rushed through the halls, her hands waving you forward and a constant flow of pleas for you to hurry.

You do your best to keep up like she’s requesting, but you can’t help but wonder what is so dire that you’re missing part of the show.

Before you know it, you’re brought back to the green room. She ushers you inside then she’s gone again. You start to call out to her in question but then you’re suddenly being swept into the arms of a very hot, very sweaty Seungmin, allowing the door to close behind you.

It doesn’t take much for your mind to finally click the pieces together.

Seungmin doesn’t waste any more time, tugging you into a hidden nook of the room. It’s a tight squeeze but they both fit with your back flush against the wall.

The air is stolen from your lungs as his lips press to yours for an eager kiss. Your hands fly to his hair, holding him close as you kiss him back. His lips are plush against yours, a flutter of butterflies bursting in your stomach.

It’s not like this is your first kiss but you’re also not the most experienced fish in the sea. Not that you would be a very good judge either but, man, is he a good kisser.

A kiss that ends too soon.

He pulls back, your lips chasing his before you can process that you’re doing it. Which makes him chuckle breathily as he presses his forehead to yours in affection.

“Hi,” he murmurs. Now that makes you giggle.

“Hi,” you return, light and soft. “Eager, aren’t we?”

Your witty comment makes him chuckle. “Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. I had to see you,” he says as his arms tighten around your waist.

“I kinda liked it,” you tease, fingers curling in his hair.

The smile that spreads across his face is contagious. Both of you huddle close, breathy laughs and hidden kisses. The sounds of some of the other boys just around the corner sends a thrill through your system. One of them could find you two at any moment. But you also couldn’t find reason enough to care.

“You know you’re keeping me from watching Hyunjin’s solo stage, right?” You say with a raised brow.

“I said I’m sorry, can’t you forgive me?”

“Hm,” you hum, “maybe I really wanted to see his sexy dancing up close.” This makes him pout and you can’t help but stretch up and kiss it away. He relaxes under your touch and when you pull back, he’s smirking at you again.

“My sincerest apologies for making you miss my hyung’s provocative mating dance,” he sarcastically jokes.

His comment makes you choke on a laugh that was a little louder than you’d have liked and you immediately slap a hand over your mouth. Lucky for you, a hairdryer was blowing somewhere out in the main part of the room and drowned out the gleeful noise.

Seungmin laughs at your expense but only a moment or two later, the door opens as Hyunjin struts in (sweat dripping off him in buckets). You’re thankful that he seemed oblivious to the two of you tucked out of plain view. Then a woman calls out for standby.

Your eyes turn back to the boy holding onto you. His smile has disappeared. “I have to get ready to go back out there,” he says finally.

“Oh.”

The way he deflates even further makes it clear that you must have sounded disappointed. You immediately try to overcompensate for your thoughtless reaction, offering him a wide grin and a big hug around his torso.

“I can’t wait to see what else you’ve prepared for the show!”

He sighs, tightening his hold around you as a grateful smile plays on his lips. “I hope you enjoy it,” he tells you softly. Your heart is fluttering at the tenderness of his words and you nod eagerly to agree.

He pulls back to let you go but takes your hand as he leads you to the door, pausing for one more peck before he can turn the handle. “For good luck,” he claims with a mischievous grin that makes you smile wider.

When he opens the door, the woman who had led you here is waiting outside for you. “Please get her back safely.” He instructs politely to which the woman agrees with a bow.

He squeezes your hand as you walk past him to leave, drawing your eyes to meet his one more time. “I’ll see you after, ok?”

Your chest explodes into butterfly havoc with a vengeance. Everything you had been worried about since the beginning has evaporated into thin air. You nod again in agreement. “I can’t wait!”

You manage to see his thousand-watt smile before you’re whisked away to return to your seat. Curious if your best friend has noticed you were gone yet.
