Tumblr media
The Joad Family's Journey From Oklahoma to California
John Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, "The Grapes of Wrath," is a timeless American classic that transcends borders. This epic tale revolves around the Joad family, a struggling Oklahoma clan, who find themselves uprooted from their farm during the Great Depression. In their quest for a better life, they embark on a tumultuous journey westward to the golden promise of California.

The Hardships They Face Along the Way
This poignant narrative compellingly unfolds against the backdrop of the Dust Bowl era in the 1930s. During this tumultuous period, the Joads encounter a relentless litany of hardships, including the heart-wrenching loss of home, debilitating sickness, tragic death, and unrelenting discrimination. Despite these adversities, the indomitable spirit of the family fuels their resilience, driving them onward in their pursuit of hope, opportunity, and survival.
Meet the Grapes of Wrath Characters
The novel introduces an array of captivating characters: - Tom Joad: The compassionate protagonist, freshly released from prison, driven by a desire to reunite with his family. - Ma Joad: The unyielding matriarch who binds the family together with love and strength. - Pa Joad: The proud patriarch, a skilled worker navigating the challenges of a new life. - Uncle John: Pa's brother, a kind-hearted alcoholic who joins the family. - Rose of Sharon: Tom's pregnant sister, a symbol of hope for the future. - Granny: The wise, superstitious elder with a cherished lucky charm. These characters, along with supporting figures like Al, Muley Graves, and Casey James Trimble Smith, make the novel a rich tapestry of human experience.

The Hope They Find in Their New Home
Steinbeck skillfully employs religious imagery to vividly underscore the paramount importance of political and spiritual unity in conquering the hardships faced by farm workers. Furthermore, as the migrants band together, forging connections and casting aside insularity, the profound hope they discover in their new home stands as an undeniable testament to the remarkable power of cooperation and goodwill.   The Importance of Family and Community Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, "The Grapes of Wrath" emphasizes the significance of family and community. As the Joads confront nature's challenges and human cruelty, their unwavering loyalty to one another and their shared goal becomes a beacon of resilience. Within their newfound community of fellow strugglers, they discover strength, support, and solidarity. This novel is a poignant reminder that in the face of adversity, we all depend on the bonds of family and community to navigate life's harshest trials.

What Does the Grapes of Wrath Teach Us?
In the shadow of economic hardship, "The Grapes of Wrath" delivers a sobering depiction of the human toll of the Great Depression. Yet, amid the darkness, it illuminates the enduring strength of the human spirit. The novel ultimately imparts a message of hope, demonstrating that even during the bleakest of times, people can unite and summon the fortitude to persevere.   Summary "The Grapes of Wrath" encapsulates the harrowing journey of the Joad family during the Dust Bowl era, marked by the loss of home, sickness, death, and discrimination. Despite the countless trials they face, the Joads stand united, a testament to the power of family, hope, and determination in the face of adversity. ART AND JOY
I want to share a few of the joys in my life associated with theatre, music, art and writing. I am impressed with the excellent writers and artists on tumbler. I realized that most of the great art I have experienced came from recommendations of friends. If I get some of your thoughts and recommendations, that would be great. I was a movie aficionado from pre school days. It was movies that brought John Steinbeck to my attention. Movies like Tortilla Flats, Of Mice and Men, The Red Pony, The Grapes of Wrath, and more. I discovered the Carnegie Public Library at age 8. I could not believe that I could take these books out for free. Some Saturdays I would spend hours going through the stacks and selecting books to check out. Thank-you Carnegie for using your wealth for a sainted purpose. At some point, in my early teens,  I started reading those Steinbeck novels. Years later I took a college course on Steinbeck. I learned that he was fascinated with Hollywood and movies. He often tried to write novels that could be done on stage or in a move without any change to his text. Of Mice and Men captured that desire. In Grapes of Wrath, there are chapters that don’t seem to relate to or progress the story. I was told that Steinbeck used them like a camera. He had close ups of the family and their plight and then pulled his camera back for sweeping visions of what was happening in the big picture. In college, I got to read him with a new eye. The Grapes of Wrath was my favorite.  This is what Steinbeck said about his novel,  When preparing to write the novel, Steinbeck wrote: "I want to put a tag of shame on the greedy bastards who are responsible for this [the Great Depression and its effects]." He famously said, "I've done my damnedest to rip a reader's nerves to rags." His work won a large following among the working class, due to his sympathy for the migrants and workers' movement, and his accessible prose style. I cried and mourned for the Joad family of Okies, not wanted in paradise California or anywhere else for that matter. Steinbeck affected me passionately about human rights, the people who are forgotten and with little chance for change. The movie is great but the book has to be read to appreciate what Steinbeck can do to you and your beliefs about people.

Isaiah 62: Redemption and Wrath
The day of God’s vengeance is really God restoring balance to the universe, bringing about healing by wiping out the disease, cutting out the cancer. As Jesus said, the day of vengeance will also be the time of redemption. #Isaiah63 #GrapesofWrath
Isaiah continued in the next chapter to describe the amazing transformation that would take place, using the theme of a beautiful bride—the same bride that Jesus talked about in the Gospels, and the apostle John described in Revelation at the wedding feast of the Lamb. Israel would receive a new name in signifying a new nature, and a new relationship with God. “You shall no more be termed…

Grapes of wrath. Each painting has some wonderful little treasures sprinkled throughout - like these angry dudes (there is something very endearing about angry fruit). Happy #tuesdaybluesday ! This isn’t really a blues tune, but it’s what I was messing with tonight. This is my favorite Woody Guthrie tune “Pastures of Plenty”. I have a version worked up on resonator guitar that’s decent, but I am liking it on lap slide guitar. It pushes it into more of a ballad, which is what I hear in my head. When I sing this tune, I’m singing it as a protest tune. It was written by Guthrie about migrant workers- notably “Okies” who were ravaged by dust storms in the depression and went en mass towards LA. Read Steinbeck’s Grapes if Wrath for a good account. But when I’m singing this tune, I think of people today displaced by violence and poverty, and the media political force that goes into demonizing people who really are just trying to survive. I think about them because I know how fruit is picked in this country, how hotel rooms are cleaned, how houses get built...and that’s my thoughts for this evening. #lapguitar #lapsteel #folkmusic #folksong #woodyguthrie #thoughts #immigration #slideguitar #bluesdaytuesday #rootsmusician #rootsmusic #thegreatdepression #johnsteinbeck #grapesofwrath #baltimore #baltimoremusic #baltimorefolkmusic #thebmorecreatives #myphilosophy #poverty #migrants #openmind #dustbowl #pasturesofplenty #fingerpickingguitar #fingerpickingguitar (at Baltimore, Maryland) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5EjGnJnno6/?igshid=1wejofqy5upih

I hardly ever do #lapsteel #guitars, but they intrigue me so much and they are the least expensive way to get into #vintageguitars! Here’s a 1950s #Rickenbacker #Model100 lap steel with original case, spotted at @capsulemusic. Swipe left to see the groovy logo plate and case. It’s celebrity owned too, by @kevinkanemusic of @thegrapesofwrath. I grew up listening to Kevin and The Grapes of Wrath and his songs Peace of Mind, Backward Town, All The Things I Wasn’t, Isn’t There, Paint You Blue, and Last To Know are amongst my favourite songs of all time. #kevinkane #grapesofwrath #canadianband #canadianmusic #80smusic #90smusic #guitar #lapsteelguitar #guitarra #chitarra #guitarre #electricguitar #vintageguitar #vintagerickenbacker #rickenbackerguitars #tone #guitargear #guitarsdaily #guitarsofinstagram #geartalk #vintagegear #guitarphotography (at Capsule Music) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuB5Uq9APC8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1izmgv21sbr2u

Revelation 14: The Winepress of God's Wrath
Whatever this passage may mean in concrete terms, for its intended audience it was as if the Lord were saying, “I hear your cries, and I see your pain. I have not forgotten you." #Revelation14 #Winepress #GrapesofWrath
Then I saw, and behold! A white cloud, and upon the cloud one sitting in form and appearance like the Son of Humanity,[1] having upon His head a golden diadem and in his hand a sharp and swift sickle. And another angel came out of the sanctuary, crying out in a mighty voice to the One sitting upon the cloud, “Thrust Your sickle and reap, for the hour has come to reap, for the harvest of earth…
