I think the only time Watterson returned to the comics page was all the way back in 2014, when he illustrated three strips as part of a week-long storyline in Stephen Pastis's Pearl's Before Swine.

It starts here, introducing the character of "Libby", who is sort of a combination of Bill and Calvin as a girl: https://www.gocomics.com/pearlsbeforeswine/2014/06/02

And in 2023 he released a "fable for adults", called "The Mysteries". It's great to see his artwork again (though he shared illustrating duties with caricaturist John Kascht).

But he hasn't tried to cash in on Calvin and Hobbes' enduring popularity. (He especially refused to license them out, so he'd never lose control of them as long as he lived)

I thinks folks expressing incredulity at the quality of the writing and composition in Calvin and Hobbes are often missing the context that Bill Watterson is arguably the most influential sequential artist of his generation. Like, this is a guy who once told the editors of nationally syndicated newspapers to go fuck themselves when they wanted to mess with his panel layouts, and not only did he keep his job, he got his way. He could have had literally any gig he wanted, and he chose to be the Sunday funnies guy because that's what made him happy. He's basically the Weird Al of sequential art.

I went to an Art Photo Festival event last night and saw a lot of very nice photography with a variety of subject matter, concepts and images printed on various materials, much of it inspiring. I was talking to a photographer about their very beautiful work and complimented them on it. They then asked what I did and I told them that I shot Skateboarding and they asked incredulously, “Why?!” I can’t really put it into words why I shoot Skateboarding, so I will let this photo of @owlcat do my talking.
