opinion on graham/oliver?

Oh so many thoughts thank u anon (these are all headcanons)

- Oliver is born in Oxbury around 1980. He has a bit of a meltdown post not being accepted into Oxford thru familial pressures and takes a gap year which leads into gap years

- Graham met Oliver through a bar. Neither were the drinking type, but Graham had a particularly rough call with his parents, and Oliver was weak to peer pressure from the little friends he’d managed to keep.

- Oliver laments over drinks that he knows this is what he’s supposed to do but he can so clearly see the difference between his life and his peers. He’s a little afraid living an empty life save for a accounting degree. Graham pats a now very self aware and embarrassed Oliver on the back and asks if he’d want to join him for a walk. His friends have things to do tomorrow and he’d save on a cab. Oliver accepts

- Oliver ends up staying the night at Graham’s. One night turns into days and afternoons. Eventually they move in together and with the other holding the other accountable that while life can be shit, it’s much more comfortable to complain with a roof over your head. They move to London to pursue higher education.

- things are great at first but Graham gets more and more paranoid throughout the first year. First he asks Oliver inane questions. Then he stops asking him anything. Oliver isn’t sure what to do. His personal life is coming to a head and guiltily chalks it up to Graham being a Criminology major. He knows it’s a lie the second the thought forms in his mind

- he watches the loft they shared start to degrade. The life that Graham breathed into kitchen tile and coffee cups is gone and in it’s place is a haunted house. He mumbles they should split one day and all that guilt crescendos because it’s the most hurt he’d seen on Graham in the past year. He’s almost angry, ending in a whisper, “I thought you’d be there for me.” Neither sleep well that night. And Oliver moves out first thing next morning.

- Oliver stops by from time to time, but Graham is so rarely himself. When it’s good, Graham is his usual self for the most part. He’s quite good at moving on- or pretending to do so. The talks are light, surface level topics. When it’s bad, Graham is a stranger. He’s two words from conspiracy and eventually during a heated spiel, demands Oliver never come by again.

okay you know what i want to elaborate on that previous hc i sent

callum is 100% a pjo kid meanwhile oliver got into the books as a sort of way to escape reality to

they bond over this and oliver lets callum borrow his books so he can read the whole series without having to bug his mum about it - but only if he behaves for a week or two

everytime there's an event or something at callum's school, he asks for oliver to come with. oliver goes solely to appease callum

callum's mum approves of oliver a lot (another hc that she was incredibly protective over callum after the whole rayner incident)

callum looks up to oliver because he's cool and is kinda how callum wants to be

oliver answers the school's calls when callums mother is at work. he hates this. the school thinks he's callum's step-father and he hates it.

oliver sort of showed callum the "ropes" of being an avatar - telling him how he could potentially Feed and what abilities he might have (most of it was guesses since he doesn't have the slightest clue what a dark avatar can do, but callum looked to him for advice so. can't leave the kid hanging)

oliver does have the vibe of older sibling like. 10-15 years older. and i love that.

callum makes fun of him for having dated graham "book eater" folger. oliver excuses it with "we all make mistakes in our first relationships".

oliver loves being able to say "you'll understand/I'll tell you when you're older" about literally anything, especially when it's avatar related.

nobody starts on callum at school because they're all batshit terrified of oliver.

oliver gets VERY defensive over callum. oh he's a bit shit at being an avatar? fuck you man, that's his brother, if you've got an issue with callum, take it up with him!

This is for @who-needs-words, who asked for a look at my timeline for Oliver Banks and Graham Folger. Sorry it’s a bit late, but I hope you enjoy it. 

Please note, this is absolutely based on my own hcs and while I have tried to fit it around the dates/events that we are given in tma canon, I have had to tweak and change things a little to make it all fit and make sense. Therefore none of this is canon, it’s just my own ideas and imagination and what made sense to me. So here goes.

Late 2000 - Oliver Banks and Graham Folger meet in Oxford and start dating. Oliver is working after having left his degree programme (he completed his first year in economics and was a high-achieving student, but left due to issues of racism in the department.) Graham has just started studying for a PhD.

Early 2001 - Graham first spots the web-table in a second-hand store in Oxford. He is intrigued but does not purchase it. He shows it to Oliver, who hates the table on sight, although he can’t explain why. 

Aug 2001 - Graham’s parents die in a car crash. (*MAG 3*)

Late 2001 - Graham suddenly leaves his PhD programme. Around this time he also goes back to purchase the web-table. 

Jan 2002 - Graham leaves Oxford and moves into his parent’s flat in London. The web-table goes into storage, while Graham hopes to research it and figure out how it can be restored. 

He and Oliver continue their relationship, meeting up on weekends and their days off. 

Mid 2002 - Graham begins to take night classes as an attempt to entertain himself and to try and meet new people, much to Oliver’s relief. 

2003 - Graham’s mood improves and he begins to feel better, although he sometimes feels like he is being followed. Oliver and him are going steady. 

Late 2004 - Graham persuades Oliver to consider going back to finish his undergraduate degree. Oliver applies to a number of universities, mostly in and around London. 

July 2005 - While getting the flat ready for Oliver’s arrival, Graham goes through the things he has in storage and comes across the web-table. He has it moved into the flat. 

Aug 2005 - Oliver moves in with Graham after being accepted to study economics at the LSE (*MAG 11 - I lived in London for almost a decade now*). He is granted permission to begin from the second year due to his previous study (*yeah I know it’s not the most believable, but the LSE do let you do this - I checked, and it’s the best way to get the dates to work properly.*) 

Sept 2005 - Oliver begins studying at the LSE. Graham is quickly becoming obsessed with researching and restoring the web-table, spending great amounts of time and money on it, which begins to put strain on his relationship with Oliver. 

Oct 2005 - Oliver and Graham argue about the web-table. Graham refuses to move it/get rid of it. 

Dec 2005 - Graham has his first close-encounter with the Not-Them and realises that something is coming for him. He becomes more and more paranoid. Oliver tries to help, but whatever he does only seems to make things worse. 

Early Jan 2006 - before Amy Patel gets concussed outside Graham’s flat - Oliver decides to move out to give Graham some space in the hopes it will save their relationship. It’s not long before Graham realises that not having another person around makes him more vulnerable, but he is also unwilling to ask Oliver back in case it puts him at risk. 

Late Jan 2006 - Amy Patel is attacked outside Graham’s flat (*MAG 3*) 

April 2006 - Graham is killed and replaced by the Not-Them (*MAG 3*)

Mid 2006 - Oliver moves back in with Not-Graham over the summer break, and is glad to see his boyfriend is no longer paranoid. Oliver completes an intern programme at Barclays. 

Late 2006 - Oliver and Not-Graham’s relationship is struggling. Oliver can’t place what it is exactly, but something just feels off. 

June 2007 - Oliver graduates and ends up with a job at Barclays in the City. (*MAG 11*)

Aug 2007 - (*MAG 3 post statement notes - I’m taking a bit of a liberty with ‘early 2007′ I know, but this just fits better*) Oliver and Not-Graham’s relationship breaks down completely and Oliver moves out of the apartment. His mental health begins to deteriorate. 

Early 2008 - Oliver has a dramatic and very public breakdown due to stress and is forced to leave his job. He can no longer afford the small flat he’s been renting on his own and so he ends up sofa-surfing. (*Again, in  MAG 11 he does say he barely made a year, but again it just didn’t fit quite well enough to match with the whole death-dreams for nearly 8 years - also this way he still sees the new year with the company which maybe could count??*)

He begins to have dreams that predict others deaths. 

Dec 2014 - Oliver has a dream where he sees his father. His father passes away 10 days later. (*MAG11*)

March 2015 - Oliver has a dream involving Gertrude Robinson and the Magnus Institute, two days later he goes to make a statement. (*MAG 11*)

I just had this idea of Graham taking Oliver on a date to an auction house because he’s an antiques nerd and then encountering The Vase.

(I’m still not sure if the vase is spiral or web, but after a relisten to mag38 I’m 100% sure David is the Dr. David we meet later) .

Oughh I don't know if I could pick honestly?? I live off of headcanons, I love them, and if you want some for like a specific character I can cook something up!!

But uhhh for now I'll just put down the 1st one this ask made me think about! Which is,, a Graham Folger hc! Who would've thought!!

Listen. The guy was One Step away from becoming an Avatar in mag 003. One Step. What step, you might ask! And an Avatar of what? An Avatar of literally Anything. Depends on what step he'd take! Any fear could've claimed him! In fact, the fact that he stayed Human?? That's the unlikely part!! That's impressive!!

So, I’ve just listened to MAG 11 during my tma re-listen and I’ve spent all evening trying to work out the time-line for Oliver Banks, and how that ties in with Graham Folger now that we know they dated. But whatever I do, I cannot get the dates to line up unless I have Oliver and Graham still dating post 2006. I know this is almost definitely not what Jonny envisioned, after all there is no sign of Oliver in MAG 003. But with some vague handwaving that perhaps their relationship was already falling apart, I think it’s a kind of interesting idea; that Oliver and Graham were still officially ‘together’ albeit struggling after Graham was replaced by Not-Graham. It adds quite a dark twist to two already tragic stories. So, yeah, I mean it’s definitely not canon and I think it’s likely an example of the complicated timeline of the show just going a bit awry (no complaints here Jonny, you did a great fucking job, so I won’t complain especially about the really early stuff when things were still kind of up in the air.) BUT, I kind of like it and maybe I’ll just adopt it as one of my weird hcs for the series. Anyway, any thoughts?ideas?theories? I’d love to hear them. Thank you.
