Essay by film critic David Thompson
Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie mesmerize as a married couple on an extended trip to Venice following a family tragedy. While in that elegantly decaying city, they have a series of inexplicable, terrifying, and increasingly dangerous experiences. A masterpiece from Nicolas Roeg, Don’t Look Now, adapted from a story by Daphne du Maurier, is a brilliantly disturbing tale of the supernatural, as renowned for its innovative editing and haunting cinematography as for its naturalistic eroticism and its unforgettable climax and denouement—one of the great endings in horror history.

David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth (Nicolas Roeg, 1976)
Cast: David Bowie, Rip Torn, Candy Clark, Buck Henry, Bernie Casey, Jackson D. Kane. Screenplay: Paul Mayerberg, based on a novel by Walter Tevis. Cinematography: Anthony B. Richmond. Production design: Brian Eatwell. Film editing: Graeme Clifford. Music: John Phillips, Stomu Yamashta.
The Man Who Fell to Earth exhibits some of the carelessness (some of it fueled by too-easy access to drugs) that afflicted the film industry in the mid-1970s, when people with a lot of money were looking for the Next Big Hit aimed at the youth market. And what could be better than a sci-fi film featuring a major rock star, lots of sex, and an irreverent attitude toward American corporations? It’s a frequently brilliant but also often frequently incoherent movie, held together by David Bowie's charisma as the alien Thomas Jerome Newton, even though Bowie later said that he was so high on cocaine during the filming that he didn't know what he was doing. In the film, he gets hooked on gin and television, so his drug indulgence may have helped in his performance. None of the other cast members stands out as prominently as Bowie. Rip Torn doesn't put together a coherent character as Nathan Bryce, the lecherous college professor who gets hired on by the mega-corporation created by Newton so he can bring water to his dying home planet. Candy Clark, who plays Mary-Lou, the hotel maid who becomes Newton's lover, has some affecting moments, but it's never clear whether she is extraordinarily naïve or under a kind of mind control induced by Newton. Nicolas Roeg somehow pulled through a difficult shoot in New Mexico, and while the movie never quite succeeds as either science fiction or satire, it became a cult hit. There's an intelligence (or at least an attitude) in the film that makes many more coherent and better polished films about alien visitors look tame and conventional.

The ultimate cult movie, one that survived critical hostility and initial poor box office to become one of the longest-running movies in film history and to take its place in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. It has raked in more than $113 million dollars worldwide since its release, thanks to audiences that made it a midnight movie phenomenon involving audience participation that included sing-alongs and lipsynching of its songs and dialogue by fans wearing the movie’s costumes. Pretty good for a film that celebrates queerness and thumbs its nose at the straight world. It’s too bad that it really isn’t very good, with amateurish performances by most of its cast, notably excepting Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a name that pretty much sums up the level of wit in the script. It also flubs its ostensible purpose: to parody the sci-fi movies of the 1950s that it namechecks in the lyrics to “Science Fiction/Double Feature.” But none of this really matters in a movie that thrives on its own raw energy and an audience’s willingness to be swept up by it.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
