Analytical Reflection
Throughout the semester, each week a new idea or technology was introduced to broaden the way we think and our knowledge on pre-existing content by showing it in a new light. A fair bit of the information introduced was personally a new concept or challenged the way that I viewed a concept I had thought I already knew about. By having new information brought forth, I was allowed to challenge and even change my views on a few of them, as well as, gain knowledge about concepts I had never heard of before. Spending so much time through the semester with new ideas showed me that generations before me went through the same things and with knowledge, we as humans, can educate ourselves, gaining more knowledge for our own personal opinions on the matters.
The first concept introduced was “techno-panics.” A “techno-panic” is essentially a moral panic in society that believes with this new technology morals and behavior will change which poses risk for the flow of how society runs as they knew it (2019). This concept was essentially foreign to me although it was brought to the public’s attention as far bas as the 1500’s that society was experiencing an information overload with the new ideas and data that was being introduced (Bell, 2010). When this information was on display for readers, it seemed the message was clear that the things causing techno-panics were understood and that those experiencing them weren’t alone. Personally, it seemed more of a way to make them sound rather blasé and show how truly ridiculous it was to once panic or continuing to panic over these ideas. The hidden message seemed to be clear to me, maybe because my generation is used to technology and grew with it, but it seemed to be that whether we like it or not, new technology was coming all the time and would continuously cause panic and still change the way the world worked at that time.
Techno-panics cause a differing view throughout different people, societies, and generations. While some find it to be a menace to society and look to more authoritative sources to rid the world of them, others thrive on the idea of new technology even though they too experience panics when initially being introduced to the concept. When glancing at the sources used for this reflection, one would think that techno-panics were a raging concept in everyone’s everyday lives, but once the information was read, it explained in detail as to why it seemed that way, but then debunked the concerns with newer information. In the early years of the internet, many households and societies all over feared what would come next with this new and useful technology, mainly focusing on the dangers of it. An article found showed that many households feared pornography and other suggestive images would find their way into the view of their children. People began to panic about how or if they could protect their children from such exposed concepts and whether or not the internet was truly safe (Herman 2017). Going forward into more modern times, the concept of techno-panics is still relevant to today’s society. With new technologies such as smart watches and GPS systems that we discussed in class that many of us use daily, myself included, to the concept of driverless cars and the purpose they will serve in society, each new concept brings on a slew of questions on whether or not they will be successful or dangerous (Rothman, 2018). Each article analyzed had the general consensus of debunking the fears, although addressing them. This may have been done to allow readers to feel understood, but then also, to force the new technology at them and suggest that the fears they have don’t apply. Overall, the concept of technology regardless of the context, is disruptive to the daily lives of people, whether it is with new gadgets that invaded home, or came into play with life-saving efforts in the medical field.
Before the introduction of modern technology in medicine, many lives were changed with no future of returning to normal in sight. Having no serious medical conditions, the concept of a ‘bionic body” had little to no thought in my mind. Further reading showed me that those who have lost a limb, have trouble with veins and vessels in their body, and other physical ailments could have a chance of creating a merged form of life with their life before the use of technology in medicine to a life where they are given that second chance. In a video found for the use of this reflection, the title read, “Better, Stronger, Faster: The Future of the Bionic Body,” the initial message was that somewhere between medicine and technology there was development on how to make limbs and other bionic body parts for those in need that would make their life easier. After watching the video, the message was clear, those in development and production of these devices were going above and beyond just creating a replacement for something lost. The video goes into detail regarding how spinal cord injuries could make full recoveries, bodies with weak hearts could find a way to pump blood, and how much further this concept could go (World Science).
To further the concept of technology in medicine comes the concept of a brain being able to control the functions of a bionic part. The artificial limb essentially is fitted personally to that one person, and with that comes allowance for the brain to control the functions of that artificial limb just like it would a natural part of the body. As of now, there are a variation of artificial limbs that can be used. This idea seems like a whole forthcoming for the medical world and those in need of this life changing development—but truly it is more than finding the part that fits. The development of these technologies is intricate and tedious for the limb to work, which causes the previously mentioned techno-panic (Bandyopadhya, 2019). The concept of bioengineered blood vessels is the most recent development I found but it is not currently available. Essentially, the new vessel would be fused with others in your body to create a solid connection and just as the other bionic devices it would change the life of the user (Jeffrey-Wilensky, 2019). It is said that beyond the many factors leading to a successful use of these devices comes the factor that they may or may not reach market approval. So while the introduction of these devices seems to be the answer for those in need, whether or not the development comes to fruition stands in the way of whether or not they are truly worth the possibility. In the sense that these introduced concepts do come to life and can be implemented in medical procedures, despite the panic it may bring to those experiencing them, they can truly change lives and create a healthier way of life both physically and mentally (Lehmann, 2013). The overall tone of how this article presented the information caused more harm than good. It took the unbelievable concept of a second chance and added many more factors as to why it could not work—leaving room for speculation seems more negative than positive in regards to this technology.
Another technological advancement that is changing lives comes intelligence systems. Intelligence systems, or, artificial intelligence is a branch of computer sciences that focuses on developing machines that think and work like humans. Two of the articles used to give information on intelligence systems provided examples of what they are and how they are used in everyday life. As the reader, when I first noticed both titles, I expected a list of the same few ideas that were very basic and non-informative. Once I read both articles, I noticed that not only did they provide very different examples, but they both provided information as to how they work and why they are in this category. One article listed concepts such as healthcare, finance, and customer service as intelligence systems and the other listed things such as Google, Netflix and Siri. While all ideas listed are primarily used in everyday life, they were on opposite sides of the spectrum. The article using the healthcare and finance example showed more types of useful and necessary technologies, while the article based on things life Netflix was more for entertainment purposes and unnecessary ideas to function. While both provide outstanding forms of information and a range of it at that, it was surprising after reading the titles to actually see what the information held (Saeed, 2020) (Finance, 2018).
Cyborgs are more than just a sci-fi fantasy creation. According to an article posted by Erin Kelly they are real and they are here. When I first read the title and first line of this article I was intrigued to say the least. The article brought forth information to suggest and prove the development and use of cyborgs in life. While my initial thoughts were along the lines of complete robotic people living in society, the information provided gave me a more clear understanding. The first example of what an actual cyborg is regards Neil Harbisson who was the British government’s first recognized cyborg. He had an antenna installed in his brain after suffering from extreme color blindness which now allows him to perceive colors as sound and experience colors beyond a normal human range. I was most interested by this article solely because the title left me curious and then the information and images used in it really tied the entire concept together (Kelly, 2018).
With the same concepts of cyborgs comes Bioart. Bioart is essentially a biological structure and process used to create live human and animal tissues. The article seems to make to concept promising, giving those in need hope that this could be the development they need. Unlike the other articles I have used and we read in class, this article uses terminology and references that are not easily understood by the common reader. Although it is understood how complex this new technology is, when giving information to readers and possible consumers it should be made easier for them to understand the process of using and developing the product that they will have implanted inside them. There seemed to be a hidden agenda of hyping up the product but without providing the most effective information of it (Solon, 2011).
The final concept of technology is the forms of technology that connect to other devices to make life “easier.” Specifically this focus on at home door and home alert sensors. Ring seems to be the rage lately and after taking a look at their website and the information provided on their products, I can see why. The alarm system is set up in your home and any time there is movement it sends an automatic video to your cellular device so you not only have evidence if something should go wrong, but you know immediately. I personally had prior knowledge of this product due to my brother-in-law using it at his home, so after hearing his experience and things he wished were different, I kept that in mind while reading the actual producers information. While the information was well written and very useful, it also neglected to give potential consumers the overall data on the different ways the system works and the different triggers to the alarms (Ring).
Throughout exploring each of these different artifacts, there was a wide range in the information provided, how it was addressed, and how the consumers and readers would be able to interpret it. Taking a look at information that was foreign to me but useful for others was an outlook I never knew I needed.

Smart Farming Solutions – How IoT transforms Agriculture Sector
Connected cars, smarter homes, and cities– the IoT (Internet of Things) has transformed our lives in many ways. The concept has enhanced our comforts through automation. Though various industry sectors have started leveraging the benefits of IoT, the agriculture sector is yet to avail its full potential. Many scopes for utilizing IoT remain unexplored in this sector, and smart farming is in the nascent stage.
Importance of Agriculture 2.0
Rapid growth in population, rising resource constraints, and rapid changes in climate are a few stumbling blocks to farmers. As per the estimate of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), global food production needs to be risen by 70 percent to feed additional 2.3 billion people by 2050.
Efficient management, optimized use of seeds and fertilizers along with precise and continuous monitoring can make this task achievable. Today, farmers in developing regions with a small-scale land account for almost 4/5 of total agricultural production. If they get the right and real-time information, they can increase the production through taking informed farming decisions. There, Agriculture 2.0 becomes a necessity.
Enter IoT. The internet-enabled objects and sensors can be deployed anywhere to gather data on moisture level and crop health. The farmers can readily access the stored data through their tablets and mobile phones. They can also select between manual and automated options for taking necessary actions based on this data. For example, if the soil moisture level decreases, the farmer can deploy sensors to start the irrigation. Now, this is what we call a smart farming.
How do Smart Farming solutions work?
Smart farming solutions work through sensors. Farmers can monitor various conditions like soil moisture, water level, light, humidity, obstacles, and motion from anywhere by combining sensors, motion detectors, button camera, and wearable devices. The IoT-based smart farming automates the irrigation system and is highly efficient as compared to the conventional operations.
It is easy to follow the trends in organic farming, family farming, etc. With the help of IoT-based farming applications.
Major IoT applications for farming are farm vehicle tracking, livestock monitoring, water level monitoring, storage and soil monitoring, etc.
Let’s elaborate a few of the applications that can revolutionize the agriculture sector:
Plant and Soil Monitoring
It is difficult to obtain the data of the farmlands with the size of hundreds of thousands of square yards. The conventional method is to take samples from different parts to check the fertility, moisture content, and chemical composition. But, the sampling method is not much accurate because the level and chemical composition tend to change from one to another location.
With IoT, there is no room for the guesswork in farming. The soil sensors, which are at uniform distances across the farmland, can alert farmer to any irregular conditions like high acidity or low moisture. The farmers can get an accurate soil data either by the dashboard or a customized mobile application.
Monitoring of plant and soil can lead to higher RoI for farmers. As a part of precision farming, the soil and plant monitoring include the following aspects:
Moisture and nutrients monitoring
Water usage monitoring for optimal plant growth
Fertilization and chemical composition monitoring
Weather condition reporting
Deciding the crop get the optimal yield
In brief, precision farming or precision agriculture is one of the most popular applications of IoT because of its plethora of benefits. The precision farming apps serve many objectives ranging from managing irrigation and fertilization to providing support to local agronomy as per different seasons.
Use of Drones and AI
Farming or agricultural drones have started gaining ground as they can perform a variety of tasks. Be it sprinkling pesticides, capturing farm photos using GPS technology, or giving inputs about water and fertilizers level; drones can do them with ease. Drones can improve the agricultural practices in the domains of crop health assessment, irrigation, soil, and field analysis.
As per the estimate of Grand View Research, the market size for these agricultural drones to exceed USD 3770 million by 2024. These drones are easy to control. Any person can control them either manually or by using on-ground IoT sensors. The drones sent collected data to servers or systems from where the end user can get them. In brief, the drone technology offers the real-time data and revamps the agriculture industry.
Apart from drones, self-driving tractors are also available that farmers can control remotely and save the labor costs.
Livestock Monitoring
Ranchers can monitor their cattle with ease thanks to livestock sensors. These sensors notify ranchers when animals roam around in the field so that the ranchers can trace their location with ease.
The livestock monitoring also enables ranchers to get data regarding the health of their cattle. It can assist ranchers in two ways:
Identification of sick animals-It allows ranchers to separate the sick animals from the herd, thereby preventing the spread of disease.
Location Tracing- It saves the rancher’s time and labor cost because there is no need to follow the herd every time.
However, it is difficult to insert sensors among livestock. Apart from a collar, a wireless retrofitted bolus is useful. It can communicate via Bluetooth.
Remote Weather Monitoring
One of the most challenging factors for the farmers is the weather. Farmers need to measure the key conditions like temperature, rainfall, humidity, moisture, and chemical composition accurately to get more crop throughout the year. Today, umpteen number of customizable sensors are available to assist farmers in monitoring their crops and the weather conditions from remote places.
These sensors eliminate the requirement for farmers to present physically at the farm. In a way, sensors can multiply the productivity and farmers can get more agricultural output without putting additional efforts.
What do engineers need to take care of while developing smart farming solutions?
There are many use cases for agricultural use of IoT depending on the farmer’s requirements. Engineers need to keep specific issues related to farming and livestock in mind while developing the smart farming solutions. Here is a brief account of five such aspects:
Purpose
What the end user wants to monitor should be at the center when the IoT app developers build an app. For example, if the end user is a corn farmer, he is concerned with water usage mainly. He wants to make sure that water is not wasted while the crop gets enough water. There, water level and moisture monitoring sensors are helpful. In other words, type of sensors depends on the purpose of IoT solution.
Technology
When it comes to farming solutions, distance plays a vital role in selecting the technology. This is because the sensors gather data and send the same to the server. We cannot use the same technology for measuring something in 10 meters and 1500 meters area. For example, NFC (Near Field Communication) or RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) works best if we want to find how many pounds of soybeans are there in each feedbag. But, if we want to send data over hundreds of thousands of meters, LPWAN (Low Power, Wide Area Network) is a good option.
Power Requirements
Engineers tend to save costs and power in the customized IoT-based farming solutions. Therefore, they often make applications that send data less frequently. As most of IoT solutions are spread across a wide farm, it is better to come up with a low power application. More data transmission will translate into more data costs and power consumption. This is important factor developers need to consider for developing cost-effective IoT solutions for farmers.
Data Frequency
The end user’s requirements are also critical to deciding the number of integrated data packets in a sensor. For example, a potato field’s farmer does not require moisture-related information every two seconds. But, if a developer makes an IoT application for an automatic tractor, it requires GPS and other information on a continual and real-time basis. In this case, the data frequency is very high.
Both the examples clearly point out the difference between high and low data frequency.
Placement of Sensors
Another challenge for the engineers is to place the sensors in a way that they can give an optimal performance. For example, they need to take more care while mounting antennae in an orange orchard than a strawberry field. Even if the farming solution has all necessary sensors, the proper placement is necessary to get all the benefits.
Wrapping Up
As per Machina Research Report, the number of connected devices in the agriculture sector is expected to reach 225 million by 2024. Globally, the farmers have started to realize that the IoT is can be a driving force for increasing agricultural production in a cost-effective way.
All the developing countries, where farming is done in a dispersed and unorganized way, IoT can offer a great help. However, it is fair to mention that engineers should understand the needs of the end user before developing the smart farming solutions.
