Kensi Gounden - Biography of Macon Bolling Allen, First Black US Lawyer.
Kensi Gounden - Macon Bolling Allen was the first recorded licensed African American lawyer in the United States. He was a self-taught lawyer who gained his knowledge and legal skills by serving as an apprentice and law clerk to practicing white lawyers in the pre-Civil War era.
Negros as they were referred to in those times received their training by apprenticeship; however, they could not depend upon the practice of law for a living. They had to work at other crafts. Allen was also known as a businessman, but the nature of the business is not known. Little is known about Allen's early years other than the fact that he was named A. Macon Bolling when he was born a “Free Negro” in Indiana in 1816, the same year Indiana was admitted as the nineteenth state to join the Union. He was listed as “mulatto” race on early census forms.
Tumblr media
Allen learned how to read and write as he grew up, and his first job in Indiana was that of a schoolteacher. On July 3, 1844, Allen passed the exam and became licensed to practice law. Yet, despite earning the right to practice as a lawyer Allen was unable to find much work as lawyer for two reasons. One, many white people were not willing to hire a Black attorney and two, there were very few African Americans living in Maine.
Allen decided to relocate to Charleston following the Civil War. Once settled, Allen opened a law office with two other African American lawyers , William J. Whipper and Robert Brown. The passing of the Fifteenth Amendment inspired Allen to become involved in politics and he became active in the Republican Party. After becoming licensed to practice law in Boston, Allen caught the attention of abolitionists, such as William Lloyd Garrison. Allen attended an anti-slavery convention in May 1846 in Boston. At the convention, a petition was passed around in opposition to involvement in the Mexican War. Allen died on October 10, 1894, in Washington D.C. He was survived by his wife and one son.

Kensi Gounden 3 Tips for Innovation Inspiration
Kensi Gounden says Innovation relies on inspiration. Keeping yourself motivated to find new sources of inspiration and creativity management is integral in your formula to success. Enjoy these tips to finding new inspiration.
Tumblr media
Expand your Knowledge Base: The root of innovation is understanding the products and the market demands that currently exist. Open source education sites such as MIT OpenCourseWare and Harvard Open Courses allow you to expand your knowledge of current trends and remind yourself of tried and true research and development methods. Consider a course adjacent to your interests. For example, innovation is exploding in the biosciences, driven by people with an understanding of genetics and computer science. Software is growing hardware, including jet fuel. Online courses offer you knowledge, and equally as important for innovators, the opportunity to collaborate with other creative thinkers. 2. Use Those Nerves to Your Advantage: Performers call it pre-show jitters, athletes get pre-game anxiety and innovators sometimes call it ulcers, but that distinct sense of panic that surrounds what feels like a tremendous, new idea could be that same rush you get just before tipping over the apex of a roller coaster. In your mind you know you are harnessed safely, the coaster serviced properly and the car is in good maintenance but your stomach still knots up and your muscles tense. In your project the research is solid, the presentation prepared and the idea ground-breaking but your mind tries to fall back into the existing ideas because you’ve already been there and know the measure of success. 3. Just Breathe: When Fast Company profiled Shell’s Mandar Apte they spoke at length about one of the most innovative and undeniably successful programs he instituted called Empower. Among the various tenets of the program, breathing techniques were introduced into the work place designed to foster creativity and innovation. A breathing technique, known in the yoga community as Ujjayi, emphasizes the pause between breathing in and out. This comes with the idea that each pause between breaths creates a brief pause in thought. Those pauses allow your mind to create separation between each thought. Those separations help keep your mind clearer and foster creativity.
Tumblr media
The Innovation Lesson: Some product managers are not innovators — they seldom leave their office, avoid networking meetups, eat lunch by themselves, and don’t talk with customers. For them, they have no fear of the edge because they never go near it. Readers of this blog are not like that. Instead, you look at how to create more value for customers through innovation, engage in networking opportunities to gain new perspectives, and expand their knowledge regularly. If you are working on the edge, continue these practices… and just breathe.

WATCH Nomzamo Mbatha Pay Homage To The Late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela During Graduation
Nomzamo Mbatha became a capped graduate of the University of Cape Town, receiving her BCom degree, Tuesday.
She wore a dress that got everyone talking for the graduation ceremony. The dress had the South African Depression & Anxiety Group’s toll free number printed on it, including pictures of the people that she’s lost in her life. The dress also had the words ‘resilience‚ courage and overcome’ printed boldly on the dress.
SUGGESTED: Nomzamo Mbatha Shares The Story Behind Her Graduation Dress
Thank you @vanessa_gounden @dorefashionsa for taking my crazy idea and executing it so well. . I wanted the pictures of my late baby sister, Carla, late older sister, Matu, my late father, Nicholas Nxumalo and the greatest love of my life, the woman who named me Nomzamo, my late grandmother, MamJoli. The many tragedies I had to survive. . The helpline to the South African Depression & Anxiety Group because MENTAL HEALTH and SUICIDE IS REAL,especially amongst university students. 0800 121314 . I dropped out of university for financial reasons amongst many other things and it took me more time to finish this degree than the peers I started with. I was gutted. Going back to finish off the race was not easy. So to those who are still in it I say… OWN PACE. OWN RACE ✊🏽 Have COURAGE. Have RESILIENCE. you WILL OVERCOME. #UCTGrad2018 #WearableART . 📷: @ramiie_g

This was your dream… . You fought for the marginalized, and was immensely instrumental in the defeat of the brutal apartheid regime. Your resilience ensured that today, we, your children could walk on a graduation stage built off the backs of our fallen people… we assure you that we receive the BATON, kwaye SOZE iwe ✊🏾 . ENKOSI MAMA… ENKOSI Nkondekazi… . Lala ngothando, Nomzamo Zanyiwe uNobandla wabaThembu #LongLiveWinnieMandela #AMANDLA ✊🏾 .

SUGGESTED: Nomzamo Mbatha Offers Free Glam To Graduating UCT Students For Their Big Day
The media personality and actress explained what pushed her to go back to the university to get her degree‚ even though she was doing quite well in her acting career during an interview with Metro FM. She said;
“For the past five years that I have been in the industry‚ every year in January it was so hard for me because there was this thing that reminded me that I had a certain incompletion and dropping out and a certain failure. Despite all the things that I was achieving‚ it just wouldn’t go away.”
“I felt like I wore the face of failure for such a very long time. I knew the responsibility that I had. I understood the badge I wore and the badge had to have an effect now. For me‚ it was understanding where I am and completing it for myself.”

Kensi Gounden - The Making Of Barbara Jordan First African American Lawyer
Kensi Gounden presenting biography of Barbara Jordan (educator, lawyer and politician) was the first African American since Reconstruction to serve in the Texas Senate and then the first African American woman from the South to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Tumblr media
Barbara Jordan was born in Houston, Texas on February 21, 1936. Due to segregation, Jordan could not attend The University of Texas at Austin, and instead chose Texas Southern University, a historically-black institution. After majoring in political science, Jordan attended Boston University School of law in 1956 and graduated in 1959. Massachusetts bar exam but moved to Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and taught there for one year before returning to Texas and became a lawyer there as well.
Both as a state senator and as a U.S. congresswoman, she sponsored bills that championed the poor, the disadvantaged and people of color. As a congresswoman, she sponsored legislation to broaden the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to cover Mexican Americans in Texas and other southwestern states and to extend the law’s authority to those states where minorities had been denied the right to vote or had had their rights restricted by unfair registration practices, such as literacy tests.
After two unsuccessful campaigns for the Texas House of Representatives in 1962 and 1964, she won a seat in the Texas Senate in 1966. The victory made her the first African American state senator since Reconstruction in 1883, and the first woman to ever serve in that body.
Tumblr media
In 1972, Jordan was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as the first woman elected to represent Texas in the House. While serving in the House, she was a member of the House Judiciary Committee and where she later delivered an influential televised speech supporting the impeachment of President Richard Nixon.
In 1976, Jordan became the first black woman to deliver a keynote address at the Democratic National Convention.
Jordan was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton in 1994.
