HEY THERE PEOPLE OF TODAY AND ROBOTS OF TOMORROW! IT'S ME, CLARK! There is a madness deep in the dark catacombs of Castle Clarkenstein. For years these claustrophobic corridors have been the home of the ghoulish giraffe himself, watching as the world passes by. He prefers it this way. It gives him more time alone with the voices. The voices tell him many strange things. Yet they always come back to one: make more monsters! Everyday they tell him this. Everyday he is unable to comply. Hey, being a mad scientist on a budget means he can’t afford the fancy scientific equipment needed to breathe life into newborn abominations. Guy’s gotta afford pizza somehow. Luckily, he has discovered a way of sorts to please the voices. During all those years of watching, Dr. Clarkenstein noticed a particular pattern. Every night during October saw artists posting new pictures based on peculiar prompts. Many of them based on children of the night. While the spotted specter might not be able to craft new zombies, he can sure as heck sketch’m! As such, I provide this friendly warning to you all now: Be afraid. Few people can survive the horrors that are DUDELZ of the Damned!

By that I mean I decided to do my own take on Sketchtober this year just minus the prompts. Anybody gotta problem with that? Tough, cuz I already drew this crap so you might as well check it out.

MEANWHILE IN ANOTHER UNIVERSE: Alecia wanted to try something new this Halloween season. By that I mean she wanted to get out of the house and not binge all thirteen Camp Carnage films. Again. Most of them were garbage anyway. No, there was something far more fun waiting for her! She just had to find it first. It didn’t take her long. Her friend Clark contacted Alecia informing her of an upcoming costume contest with a hundred dollar prize! A prize the masked maniac was determined to win! How fortunate that her spotted friend recently introduced her to a great show featuring a feisty femme fatale perfect for cosplaying! Skin tight military suits for the win!

Honestly, the backstory I make up for this DUDEL doesn’t matter in the slightest. This is simply long overdue vengeance. For the last two years my masked buddy Alec (@burningthrucelluloid) did his own Inktober challenge in the form of Dresstober. Instead of a list of prompts to base your art on, the artists in question are given a multitude of preselected outfits to dress their characters in. Or in the case of my cinephile companion, his characters, a few of mine, and me. You see, for whatever reason my friends get a big kick out of gender-swapping me. All because I dressed up as Sailor Moon the one time. OraTheRebelKitsune, I hope you’re happy cuz you technically started all this! Does it bug me? Yeah, kinduv’. Much as I love it when my friends make any pictures of or for me, it gets pretty annoying when none of them draw me as who I am. Alec is by far the worst offender, spending an astonishing amount of money for people to draw me sporting cleavage with their own gravitational pull. Earlier this year he paid one artist named fallen20xx to draw me as Ms. Marvel from Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. I had gotten Alec hooked to the show while also gushing over Carol’s exceptionally sexy legs. Should’ve known that’d come back to bite me. Just like my friend should’ve known his constant drooling over Maria Hill and Abigail Brand would be his undoing. The latter had a more interesting outfit, hence why my best buddy is wearing it here. Also included is an actual quote he said while watching the show! By the way, I did all this before he paid for fallen’s commission, so really I was totally in the right to sketch this. In any case, I hope you all enjoy this sweet slice of revenge as much as Alec does! XP

Fabric Tetris!!!!

For those who aren't into sewing and those who want to get started, pinning and cutting is the worst! This is probably the most crucial step because if you screw up cutting out the pieces you're going to work with, you might as well start over. (And when you have potentially expensive fabric, that makes it all the more nerve-wracking.)

I know it's been awhile since I updated this and that's because I didn't have a lot of progress.

I did cut and sew the lining for the dress bodice as a trial before cutting the actual fabric....and it went fine. Despite the fact the bodice is multiple pieces, it was a very straightforward process. (I even found out I cut it a size too big and was able to take in the fabric a bit.)

Advice to beginner's No. 2: If your pattern has a lining and you're a little nervous about cutting your main fabric, it's definitely a great idea to cut and sew the lining first. Fabrics like muslin are inexpensive, some going as low as $2.99 per yard, and are perfect for prototypes. That way, you can find all the quirks of the pattern before you go on to the real deal.

The problem I ran into was cutting the actual fabric. This dress pattern only requires a lining for the bodice, not the skirt. So, counting up all the dress parts, I realized this beast was made up of seventeen individual pieces.

Damn, that is a lot and I'm not all that great at fabric Tetris. Plus, most the time when I cut patterns, the fabric is normally doubled so you get two pieces. The skirt parts called for four, meaning you gotta quadruple the fabric.

So long story short, I opted to wait for a weekend to meet up with my lovely, and much more experienced, mother to help me out. Thank you, Mom! Love you!

So the fabric itself: I chose this solid dark blue cotton.

Cotton is relatively cheap and definitely my go-to for most cosplay, but if you want to shell out some extra cash for a fancier look, velvet will give it a nice textured and semi-glossy look while satin is very glossy.

Just remember, dresses with big, full skirts are going to demand more fabric than a simple sundress or trousers, so keep that in mind when budgeting and choosing materials for your project.

Advice to beginners No. 3: Buy fabric from a fabric store, not a craft store. For fabric stores, it's in the name; fabrics are their main profit. They'll have the better variety and, most importantly, the best prices and deals. While stores like Hobby Lobby (hiss) and Michael's do carry fabric and have the occasional sale, it's not their central product, so they don't have the incentive to market it the same way stores like Joann Fabrics do.

Upcoming Halloween

All right, we're in spooky season now, so I can talk about this.

Here is my costume prep/advice to beginners/I'm figuring it out as I go/whatever you want to call this.

(Pre-made costumes are lovely and wonderful, but I love the creation process that comes with making your own.)

Patterns: There are patterns you can purchase online for Lenore's dress and cloak if you look on sites like Etsy, but I like starting completely from scratch, even if that means cobbling together and customizing existing patterns. I feel like you get a little more creative freedom picking and choosing the elements you want.

Advice to beginners No. 1: Never buy patterns full price. Craft stores will often have patterns on sale.

If you're going to make Lenore's cloak out of faux fur to recreate how it appears in the series, there are two things you should know:

Fur fabric is expensive. Good quality stuff can be up to $50 per yard. If you don't want to break the bank but still want the look, I recommend buying from a craft store that specifically specializes in fabric and waiting for a Black Friday sale. Black Friday will have the best deals.

Fur fabric is heavy. Like really heavy. It's a workout cutting it, pinning it, and holding it in place while you sew it. (It tries to escape the machine.)

Current status: Really wishing I could just do this.

Ok but people with less money than a whole production studio have done way better cosplays, cuz they were CREATIVITY. They worked with what they had and it still came out nice!! Still stayed true to character with their own spin on it,

Also yeah hi, a first look/trailer, whatever is suppose to make people wanna see it, its suppose to excite you, but this first look has been nothing but disappointing.

The light washing of brown skin characters, the completely white cast besides one..darkish skinned person (Bloodgood..shes darker than clawdeen I assume) and darkening Clawdeen and Cleos actresses skin tone in those shitty promos, getting some racist white dick to produce it, the lazy almost laughable character designs they went with with only two showing the most effort (Draculara and Frankie) and the complete rewrite of characters that people love for no reason.

The first look shows they dont give a shit about diversity, they dont give a shit about the franchise theyre marketing from and thats it. If you wanna see this shit, fine. But pirate the fuck out of it. Dont give this shit money. Its not worth a single cent.

Also. I have to iterate again.. This isnt hate towards any of the actresses or actors, nothing against them, Im sure theyre fine people, dont anyone harass or bully them at all, I cant believe I gotta say that but some people never get the memo. Not to harass actors for a script THEY didnt write and have no say it

Might I please ask what you like best about Carmen Sandiego? (Reading your mention of her in connection to the Fantomas of Mexico has roused my interest!).

I think it's really wild and cool that one day a bunch of people sat down and thought "hey, let's try and make geography fun for kids by dressing it up in a fun heist story" for a game, and then they made a franchise out of it and somehow they ended up creating the most iconic gentleman thief in fiction alongside Arsene Lupin, Robin Hood and Catwoman, characters with much, much, much more history and budget behind them that's ever been afforded any Carmen Sandiego project, who's never even had a film to her outside of animated specials.

Carmen is one of those characters who hooked people worldwide from design alone and has achieved the kind of global fame that vastly surpasses the amount of people who've ever played the games or watched the cartoons. In a sense you could even argue she is one of the most iconic videogame characters, but her popularity vastly transcends the games themselves. I don't personally know anyone who's ever played the games or watched the cartoons but I can damn well guarantee you they could picture Carmen Sandiego from memory if I asked them to. She has a slick design and a cool attitude and a catchy theme song and those three go a loooong way in making characters popular and timeless regardless of how humble their beginnings.

I see people lament a lot that we don't have many modern superheroes or pulp heroes or even heroes in general being created and that we're mostly just repackaging the old ones, and there's some truth to that, but the existence of characters like Carmen is stone-cold object proof that the most popular and greatest of characters can come from anywhere. It's like that Ratatouille saying, great art can come from anywhere.

I do admit I'm not as schooled on Carmen because so far I've only really watched the Netflix cartoon, which I dearly loved and will probably rewatch soon. I understand it took several liberties to make Carmen a good guy which is usually not the case, which is something I'd normally abhor. I didn't mind it because I didn't have any history with Carmen, and because I thought it was the smart move for a reboot of the franchise. Not that I'm criticizing the previous works, not at all I actually intend to check them out someday, but if there's ever, in the history of fiction, existed a villain who was obviously 100% guaranteed to work in an anti-hero reimagining, it was Carmen Sandiego.

Of course they are gonna make Carmen an anti-hero, her name on's the title and she's the one everyone's tuning in to watch. Carmen is grade-A protagonist material, and given how deprived we usually are of good and badass and popular latino characters I have zero complaints whatsoever with the change, even if it makes her less interesting in some aspects. Of course they took a look at the smart, cool, superhumanly capable and dashing latina thief and didn't go "actually, she's the villain so we gotta focus on the government agents out to catch her", fucking look at her. Even I want to cosplay Carmen, her look alone is way too good.

Frankly I was very happy to see Gina Rodriguez in the role (and if any of you guys ever consider watching Jane the Virgin, please watch it if only for Yael Groblgas and Jamie Camil's performances, I did not regret a second of screentime they were on) and I eagerly look forward to the future of Carmen Sandiego as a property now that they've achieved the ever-so-rare successful reboot. I'm glad the show had a good run and got to end on a high note but I eagerly hope to see it's characters again.

Quick question from your local makeup/costume major:

WHAT THE EVER-LOVING FUCK HAPPENED TO AHSOKAS MONTRALS????

Like just from a time line/logic perspective not even a makeup perspective, WHY ARE THEY SO SMALL?

Like togruta's montrals continuously grow throughout their life (like ears) so why would her montrals be smaller than they are in rebels if this takes place AFTER rebels? Also they didn't even look like Ahsoka's montrals they had a completely different shape and stripe pattern. Like I'm sorry, you had the opportunity to merge the styles of both rebels!Ahsoka and CW!Ahsoka into one more unified entity through live action and instead just like created a completely new and unrelated rendition of her.

The montrals, besides being entirely wrong for Ahsoka were so ill fitted? Like they didn't fit onto Rosario's head? Like they were visibly sliding back on her scalp the entire episode. They looked like they were made for an actress with a smaller head and then Rosario was cast and the makeup team was like "Ah fuck it we can cram her into these." Also they weren't positioned so they hid her ears (again going back to them being the wrong size). The entire time you could see where the makeup artists had used a bald cap to tape back her ears (and they didn't do that well, her ears were totally visible).

There were really bad flaws in the silicone as well, like they'd been sent in the mail and packaged improperly and got creases and dents in them from not being bubble wrapped? The crown/headpiece looked like it was made before the montrals existed and so didn't fit on them at all? Like it rested so awkwardly forward and not flat against them like the rebels version is was based on?

I mean this in the least offensive way possible but I've seen many many cosplayers do better. This is not like some low budget show either so what happened??? How can people in their basements without the right equipment be making better silicone head pieces than you?

Also the body paint was so even it was scary, like people's skin isn't that smooth and even. SKIN HAS DIFFERENT COLORS EVEN ON THE SAME PERSON. Like the inside of you arm is lighter than the part that gets sun, she would be darker in some places and lighter in others. Also did we just forget that like togruta's have really pale/light palms? Where did that go? Also just like contouring, why did she have no contouring? It was like homestucks first cosplay where they're so flat grey (or in this case orange) they look like a sheet of cardstock paper and their face gets all flat stanley-ed

Also also the face markings were freakishly crisp. Like they stood out and basically glowed in the dark, there was no blending. And like yeah I know they used a stencil to create them, but as a makeup artist you gotta fuckin blend baby, like that's the 1st rule in the book. The markings look like they were printed on her face so unnaturally.

Finally, who was like maintaining the costume? Why is her costume like not on her correctly like 60% of the time? What happened to her arm bands why do they be all bunched up in her elbow crease? This is TV get her some fashion tape and stick them up there.

I have many many more opinions on the plot of the episode but those are all subjective and this is just criticism on bad makeup/costume artistry. Hey Star Wars, hire me, I can do better, you can do better.

-i wanted horns but also wanted to be able to put hats on my sona ( i gotta pick a struggle lol), so i got the idea from @/japhers to use horn seals :] the horn seals are just simple bandaids though, with the magic. they’re itchy and time consuming to do, i imagine. all for the hat at least

“least favorite” implies dislike which...not true! truthfully it’s much of HEAVENS by nature of ‘I haven’t spent as much time getting to know these characters so I don’t really know who they are.’ (though I already know I love to go for drinks and snacks with Van hehe) i do like all of HEAVENS quite a bit from what i’ve seen so far but that affection has not had time to ripen!

I can’t answer everything with Ranmaru but like. His ambition, straightforwardness, and how the soul and spirit of music motivate him to move forward beyond a tough past are things I same hat so much ;; But HONESTLY I also relate a lot to Masa and Tokiya, especially in their moments of self-doubt and dramatic commitment to to their art? 

5. A character that you think deserves more love?

Oh, Cecil, without a doubt. He’s such a resilient, committed, and open-hearted cutie and gets really shafted by canon tbh. Which makes it harder for everyone to see what a great boy this sweetie is! But I appreciate how Shining Live has given him some room to have really cute and standout moments so everyone can love him more but okay like, give me more Ceci and Ran palling around I love him most when they’re up to shenanigans 

6. A character you would want as your partner?

well we’re posting this fuckin here so you all fuckin know (im very embarrass rn i can barely say it lmao)

I had plans to cosplay Ranmaru a couple months ago bc it’s really not much of a stretch for my wardrobe, haha, but I dunno about that anymore! Part of it was wanting the Euphoria of looking like a tough, twunky, princely anime character but tbqh I’m already that every day of my life so 

I suppose if you were to pull my leg I’d go for cosplaying Van, mostly because I wanna try that mullet on for myself.

(I do also adore Natsuki’s and Camus’s voices! I tend to like deeper, richer vocal qualities, but you just can’t beat Ranmaru’s subtle growls and high-energy rock!!!! <3)

god what combo of these idiots DONT i love? I could watch Reiji prank and tease Ranmaru all fuckin day, and I also really like it when Ran’s at his most ‘tuff big bro-y’ with, like, Ai, Otoya, and Cecil!!! but honestly I do like how the Ran/Masa/Ren trio isn’t so straightforward and is more or less held together by a thin string of professionalism, there’s something i appreciate about not forcing ppl to just bury the hatchet and be Perfect Friends but you all can still care about each other? (Ranmaru needs to be nicer to them still but...) 

i need to suggest one that isn’t ranmaru centric fjdsioafjsa i fuckin love Soccer Buds (otosyo) and I loooooove it when Otoya and Cecil are good to each other!!!

they’re all my favorite but if you REALLY had to make me pick.....Masato, probably, haha. I just...if you take yourself too seriously and care so much about everything but still know how to be Nasty how can I not love you???

Ahhh that’s tough! I love all these goofbags, and Tattsun really is just so cool and makes music I’m pretty about. But I think I gotta give it to Suwabe, his performances are always so him but still pretty varied, and how can you not adore a man who loves his chihuahuas that much??? 

(if i’m being 100% honest Tattsun lost points bc he voices my absolute least favorite character in granblue ffjsfjisda) 

22. Favorite Drama CD?

HMMMMMMM see as a certified Giant Tool for Everything Mecha and silly and extra, I enjoyed the hell out of Polaris, but it really suffers from a lack of Ranmaru in my humble fuckin opinion lmao. So even though I’m not one for pirate stuff most of the time, I gotta give it to Pirates of the Frontier!! I really loved Ranmaru and Otoya’s dynamic in that one, and Camus was juuuuust the right amount of shitheel, too. 

I haven’t heard the whole thing but that thing from Egoistic where Natsuki squeezes Ranmaru to death and Eiichi’s just like ‘WUAHAHAHAHAH’ is also the mcfuckin best.

HOW COULD I POSSIBLY PICK?????????? LIKE??? I love the fucking dumb, dumb, dumb ostentatiousness of Evil Villains, I LOVE a good heel, and I also worked so so hard to t1 that event and had a lot of fun doing it!! But also, I just love his big smile and all the energy and mixed prints from Fortune and Prosperity, and it was literally the first time I ever got the exact card I was rolling for in a gacha on the last pull I had left!! (He also came home during a time I was really going through some shit, and ngl it rescued me a little bit!) but AHHHH Soulful Bass also came out right around my birthday, I love all the textures in the outfit and it’s generally the most My Aesthetique thing Utapri has ever released!!! And god, I just love it when he’s so confident and in his element like this, it sets me on FIRE to see him light up the stage wurghjgfj ;___; They all make me just want to HUG SO MUCH ARGGHHHHH

Ahhh I think Shining Live really has great beatmaps across the board so that’s a tough pick! Almost all of them are super fun in their own way, but I think I gotta hand it to Wild Soul, Top Star Revolution, and Innocent Wind!

Actually I’m really glad for this question bc I’ve been so busy lately I hadn’t given myself the time to really check them out! checking ......... 

and yep. Black Deja Vu. (I mean...Ranmaru is on it, haha.) But I’m so about this. Love this heavier sound and all these harmonies, this is so juicy. (White Gravity also absolutely kicks ass though!! I’m really liking that voice group, it’s making especially good use of those higher registers!) 

27. Utapri merch that you own/want?

Honestly I don’t have much u__u Not a lot of Utapri merch is my thing...you know? I’m mostly shopping for Ran merch if I’m getting any, but I’m very picky about how he gets drawn? Keeping his toughness and a particular clothing style about him is so essential, haha, and barely anything hits that sweet spot for me. But I will say I adored the whole ‘My Favorite Things’ series, and if I had the budget and space atm I’d love to get some of the Ran goodies from that line! 

28. How did you get into Utapri?

I first heard about it through some acquaintances from cosplay before Quartet Night was a thing. It didn’t appeal enough to my heavy metal ass to make me drop everything and try it, but I did have an interest in it I couldn’t explain and I’d always intended on trying it out. (especially after I got into Love Live and idol anime for a bit.) But it was Shining Live that got me! And I really only downloaded Shining Live because I was super exhausted after a business trip, didn’t want to leave bed once I got back home, and just wanted to sink my teeth in something new I could enjoy for hours while lying down, haha.  

29. A set theme in shining live that you want to see in the future?

This will surprise nobody, but something tougher. More rock, more punk, more metal. I want all of them in studs and spikes and leather, and I want less polish. More rough! 

I’d also love a wrestler set complete with who’s-a-heel-who’s-a-face but that’s a pipe dream and a half, lmao. 

30. Why do you love your best boy?

Oh boy. 

I think he’s this powerhouse of a human bean who can face a ton of pain and meet it with a big middle finger. And that middle finger is chasing after ambitious dreams, of spreading the power and soul of the same music that made me who I am and influences so much of my work, but also being ... you know, smart about it? He’s an idol because like, sure, maybe it’s not the OG dream, but you can’t dream if you’re dead, and you also deserve to give yourself a life and platform to share some of who you are, and you can do a lot of good with that, too. (And I won’t lie, I respect the drama of a man who takes his hair that seriously and commits so hard to the aesthetic he wears fuckin mismatched contacts i just. charm point ) 

But at the same time....I don’t know, this might sound presumptuous, but. I think. I just think he’d think I’m as neat as I think he is. I’m an ambitious, passionate person, too, and I also furiously stick to my ideals, and I also love the same kind of soul of music he does. I lean a little more metal than I do rock, but I think that’s nice, like sharing it has that ‘alike but different’ kind of familiarity and novelty all at once. Sometimes it’s tough sharing just how deeply rock and metal have sculpted me and my artwork (and therefore my career), bc it’s so deeply personal to me, and sometimes there’s weird elitism/misogyny/racism to deal with, too. But. The way he talks about rock, the way he describes the passion and how it transcends identity and is just a pure rush of power and sharing your feelings..................it just feels like he Gets it the same way I do. Just that unspoken, burning passion and understanding. I know it sounds weird to feel that strongly over just a music genre, but I just vibe with how to him, it really isn’t ‘just’ a music genre. I feel more accepting of myself for it, and I’d like to think he’d be real proud of himself for that.  

And listen, like....I’m very sentimental, but I really don’t like saccharine, flowery, romantic kinds of affection to be lavished on me. Just be straightforward but also a little tsun about it fjdsjfas and ..... those are the kind of feelings I can accept. And that’s the way Ranmaru is, and it’s also grounded in the kind of reality that I don’t like to be swept away from. He’s just so cool and hardworking and unwavering in his passion, it makes it easier for me to do the same despite all the bumps in the road. This got real long but Ran’s a cool dude, haha, I got a lot of positives to say.

I AM TOO. I’ve been sooo curious about this ship for so long? Since you love it and I wanted to meet them too?? But everyone refused to give me Jason content in adaptations, like, how dare they??

But also now that I am nearly done with Titans, I gotta say I’m really really mad about the bad trailer and promo pictures first released for this show, because they were the main reason I never checked it out.

Kory, Raven and Beast Boy looked so incredibly... cheap in the first promos. Which... they... really don’t come off as as cheap in the actual show and, more importantly, the “cheap cosplay” look those first pictures radiated really gave a “low budget, not much effort put into it” vibe to the overall show and that’s... also not actually true? I think the CGI and effects are actually pretty good, like... better than in... *side-eyes Legends of Tomorrow* other shows...

And the trailers just... made it look insanely unnecessarily violent; the first trailer I saw was just Dick beating people up and saying “fuck Batman” and the second trailer I saw was just... Kory randomly assaulting people in a diner, which was such an un-Starfire thing to do, but hey of course did they have to badly cut the trailer up to leave out the part where Kory assaulted a domestic abuser and defended a woman! :D”““

So for me, as someone who does not like violence and only endures the... necessary minimum of violence fantasy and superhero shows ought to have, the fact that both trailers bluntly and only focused on unnecessarily excessive acts of violence, was an insane “yeah no this is not for me” thing.

And now that I actually saw it, I’m really glad I gave the show a chance after all, not just because I got to meet Jason and see JayDick, but because... the show is actually, genuinely... good and way better than the first impression it left back when it was first announced and promoted?

overlyanimated. com/2018/12/28/winners-2018-ova-ies-tv-animation-awards/ Have you seen this? I know everyone is upset about TBP not winning but I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that these so called experts voted down TDP like that in the best new animated show category.

From the site’s About page, looks like they’re not even doing podcasts on tDP in the first place. Could be that the majority of their listeners focus most on the same shows as the podcasts’ focus. 

I’m also kinda dubious about the value of this as an award (I mean, other than listing in on the show’s wiki page), because it doesn’t actually say what the criteria are for the award. Is it excellence in writing? or the animation? or the voice acting? On top of that, how were the votes collected, from whom, what was the criteria for qualifying as a voter? 

It’s a little-known award with broad categories and a rather vague explanation of its award-granting process. What I see looks like it amounts to “which series I liked best” in a one-to-one ratio, and that’s really nothing more than a popularity contest. If you want me to get excited, show me a series or movie that’s managed to squeeze into a nominee list for the Annie Awards --- a list, I must add, that’s also very precise about exactly what each award is for. 

Like is paired with like (a children’s show doesn’t compete against general audience movies) and the title is very specific about the particular skill or quality that’s being recognized as excellent. The competition is fierce and the nominees are amazing across the board, which makes a show like Del Toro’s Trollhunters --- nominated for four awards --- really stand out. Or Into the Spider-Verse, nominated for seven awards. 

Another thing I should add: submissions almost always cost money. (That is, to get your work on the list of potential nominees.) Sometimes it’s a cost per category, too. That’s part of the reason a lot of the nominees in major awards are coming from large studios, who have the budget to submit for multiple categories, and people to track all the deadlines of submitting and demonstrating qualifications and all that jazz. 

I adore tDP as much as the next fan, but Wonderstorm is a teeny company, and it’s running on a shoestring budget. Its animators may be members of ASIFA-Hollywood (and thus can submit) but that doesn’t mean WS can spare the $125 for a single category, let alone a grand for the ten or so categories where tDP might qualify. (And no, you do not get your money back if your submission isn’t chosen as a nominee.) 

Yes, it’s wonderful to hear your favorite show got an award. But either it’s something with little to no meaning in the bigger picture (like one podcast’s popularity vote), or it’s got major cachet and requires money, time, and a lot of effort. In either case, big studios have the biggest advertising reach (so their works are constantly in the forefront of peoples’ minds) and the biggest budgets (for all those nominations), so they tend to dominate. 

It’s just how it is. 

Here’s how to tip the scales in your favorite show’s favor: make noise. 

Get everyone you know to watch. Evangelize the show to your friends, colleagues, classmates, family. Encourage people to get a Netflix subscription solely to see the series. If you attend cons, cosplay the characters and (politely) pester the con about holding panels about the show. If the con doesn’t have any, organize one of your own and submit it as a fan-run panel. 

Buy the merchandise, hammer on the official account for any news of more merchandise or related games or release dates. Wear the t-shirts proudly. If a podcast like overlyanimated or a zine like Geekiary or Mary Sue isn’t reviewing or promoting your favorite show, you tweet or tumble or even just email them and ask them to do so. 

You want it to snowball. You want Netflix to notice there’s an awful lot of people subscribing and the first thing they watch is tDP. You want cons to see that highlighting tDP is a surefire draw and reliable crowd-pleaser. You want possible investors (who do watch these things) to see HT can’t keep tDP merchandise in stock for love or money. 

All of these come back to: someone is making money off your love for tDP. Sounds mercenary? It is. It’s called capitalism. But if you want the forces of corporate capitalism to give you more of what you want, you gotta play the game. 

Raise the roof, and you’re on the first steps of making tDP into a cultural juggernaut with the power to sweep awards.

Like the sun is better for mental health, but the heat is a killer.

Let's see; light pink, dark purple, dark green, red in many variations(I'm not a big fan of the natural red I have s fire a long long time I'd darken it) black obviously, indego, something that was called sapphire but just looked like a basic blue. Different variations of natural browns, and as a child my mom used to kind of bleach my hair (I hated being a blonde though)

The idea of fangs appeals to me but I'm a bitey person and I'd really hate to hurt anyone in trying to be playful. So horns, one of my fav pictures I've taken of myself was in these cute horns I bought from a Ren faire.

Unlimited budget hmm... Literally the most cringiest cat girl ever moving tails and ears all that. No seriously It'd probably more like cosplay because I'd want to do Ahri, the nine tailed fox (league of legends) Probably the fox fire or popstar versions of her. Those styles would be cool as fuck to try and pull off. But also the amount of detail I could go into with an unlimited budget would be insane. The thought excites the artist in me.

Oh music... Ha I'm sooo obsessed with so much music it could pretty much be anything. But I'm going to give you actual answers so.... Here's a short list of songs I'd kill in karaoke.

This is one of my favorite fall out boy songs and really I could probably sing anything by that band but this one! I'd sing I'd dance it would be a show.

j: AND! i read this article, they said it was possible and most probable that cavemen were smarter than modern humans, because they had to depend on their intelligence to survive, every day. and the stupid ones would be killed by something with big teeth.

j: i actually- i had- i had an idea, for— actually, no, i have to be honest. i was shooting a movie in northern, uh, northern new york and this kid was talking about how he thought that, that, um, that aliens with, with a really advanced culture would be -idiots- because they’d have all of these tools and they didn’t -have- to be smart. and i was like - *gasps* what a great movie, like- like war of the worlds, they’re ray-gunning us, it’s like ‘oh the aliens are gonna-!’ and they get out of the capsule- *dumb alien noises* oh, we’re gonna kick their ass!

m: oh, also - i also wanted to say, thank you for, um… ‘chance’ with amber benson is one of my FAVORITE movies EVER! 

j: FINALLY!!

m: and when you said- when you said when you were, uh, gonna do another thing with her i was like, oh my god, thank you! simon is - *heart hands* just the best. 

j: okay this- this is the thing. she shot that movie - this is, this is amber benson, okay - so, she shot it on digital camera, back before digital cameras were, were really developed like they are now. and the problem - the good thing about doing that is you didn’t have to buy film and then develop film, which is really kinda half your budget;  when you’re on a low budget film like half your budget takes just that.

j: so, she shot digital, but the, but those cameras were bleaching out the color, that was the problem. so she did a bunch of tests with her camera, and she got the right, ultra pigment for the walls - like she painted the walls like, purple, like - you know.

m: it was orange, wasn’t it? the apartment.

j: orange, all those - and makeup, the actors makeup was extra orange and extra bright, but it all bleached down to a really nice image at the end. i was like - that is so tight. 

m: did you, uh - did you like wearing the makeup? and the lipstick?

j: YEAH! come on!

m: i love that shot where you’re kissing the mirror! it’s just so!

j: if (actor i couldn’t catch the name of bc of the crowd) can wear a dress, i can DEFINITELY wear a dress! *laughs*

j: so bad. so bad! i was just talking with, um, laura (couldn’t catch the last name) about it, and like, i’ve - i’ve always thought that when my kids get out of college i’ll go back into theatre, which financially speaking is - is basically retirement. because there’s no money in theatre. so it’s all about, yknow, what i wanna do- the problem is! my sons in law- i told my kids, you get the grades, i’ll find the money. and they’re like ‘okay’! and so now my son is in law school and like i said my daughter is (in medical school) - top of her class (proud dad moment). 

m: (and the crowd) wow!

j: nooo, she does not want anything to do with my job!

Just a FRIENDly little thing

Not gonna lie this whole thing with people going to Thomas's friends just to get to him really has me down, because I thought this fandom was the exception to such invasive behavior.

I was wrong.

And I hate it with a passion and wish I knew those people so I could have somehow talked them out of it.

But we can't let this thing get to us. Because we are better than that. We stand for love, acceptance, and self-care. We support Thomas, each other, AND.HIS.FRIENDS! All of them.

I know personally, I listened to Terrence sing Birds on the Ultimate Storytime CD, but I didn't fangirl over it because he was a link to Thomas. No, I fangirled because he has an AMAZING VOICE!

Do you know how many times I strive to create an aesthetic? A good aesthetic? Talyn's amazing at that by the way I hope you're all aware, and I look up to them for their style. I love the way they edit (because that's really hard to do and most of us don't even realize it unless we did it ourselves). And everything they do behind the scenes that we don't even realize? I really do love Talyn.

On that same note, Joan is an amazing editor as well! I appreciate their humor immensely, it really makes my day. Everything Joan writes and does simply astounds me, and they're super talented! From the videos they star with Thomas to their other projects, I'm heavily impressed.

HAVE YOU SEEN DAHLIA COSPLAY CONNIE FROM STEVEN UNIVERSE?!?!?! UGH if not you really should because SHE CAN COSPLAY SO WELL! As a cosplayer myself that is not an easy hobby, budget wise and creative wise. Not only that, but she honestly makes me smile. In the dreams video, all of her interpretations made me think and she's really smart and amazing!

But guys...guys hold up.

Have you SEEN this precious bean??

Not only is he AMAZING at dancing and being creative af, but he also is a kind soul and needs SO MUCH MORE RECOGNITION! I cannot stress enough how amazing he is, and have you heard him sing? He can sing really nice (I hope one day he and Thomas do some sort of duet because Y E S).

Valerie is an AMAZING ACTRESS!! And honestly she's super pretty and talented just seriously. And her singing range sincerely impresses me because as a female myself I can garuntee you my voice cannot go as high and sound so fluid. That. Is. Talent! There are people who sing high notes and it just doesn't settle right (especially since I get scared easy from loud noises). Not Valeries voice no. The pitch is spot on and sounds refreshing.

So yes, I basically just unintentionally gushed over Thomas's friends, but let me because they really are talented and it warms my heart knowing they're there for him and he's there for them.

THEY ARE FRIENDSHIP GOALS!

So, let's keep treating them as talented individuals because they really truly are. I did find them through Thomas, but I appreciate them as their own creators.

1. How did you become interested in film?

I was raised on a lot of classic and special effects films at a very young age. My uncles had shown me four films on VHS that was the real spark for me and those were King Kong (1933), King Kong Lives, Jaws and Jaws 2. While also being exposed and a fanboy of Star Wars and Anime at the time, it was a trip to Universal Studios Florida back in 1998 that lit my fascination with filmmaking and what I wanted to do for a living.

2. What sort of stuff did you film when you were starting out?

My first film, believe it or not, was a rendition of Star Wars Episode I prior to the movie coming out back in 1999. After watching the episode of Muppet Babies titled Gonzo’s Video Show, I grabbed my parents VHS camera, my sister and a few friends and whatever toys were lying around and we “Pre-Created” the movie of how it was gonna play out in our heads. After which I started making more short films with friends and some of these have either been lost or were never finished. In the course of a few years, I took a break from making films and picked back up using a newly bought DVD camera and began a fascination with LEGO films. Once YouTube and the internet were more available to me, I started making LEGO videos on my YouTube channel using a primitive Webcam from a LEGO Studios set. By 2010, I started gaining access to better technology and cameras and set about making my first feature film, while on the side creating movie reviews which have kept me busy on a weekly basis.

3. What's your favourite genre to film?

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been a fan of special effects and action movies. The best are those that use elaborate practical effects with Stop Motion Animation, miniatures and creature suits and puppets. I’ve also been fascinated and awed by anime films and shows with their complex stories and characters as well as their creativity for creatures and worlds.

4. Is there anything you'd love to do on your channel (like a dream video you'd like to make)?

My videos have always had some form of large ambitions. Most of my movie reviews have always kept me busy and it's basically my job now. But I’ve been wanting to take my reviews in a larger direction creating stories with established characters and expanding it with short films and possible features. I love to work on videos with large ideas and cheap special effects.

5. Besides film, what else do you like to do in your spare time?

I like to mostly socialize with other creators and talents throughout where I live. I love going to local cons and meeting new people with talented cosplays and creators on YouTube. Aside from that I love to LARP (Live Action Role Play) cause it helps me come up with stories for possible future projects.

6. What films do you have planned for the future?

My remake of King Kong was a major challenge and test to see what my efforts could do for a feature film and how I can improve on them. My next big project I want to get off the ground is a live-action web series continuation of the Manga/Anime, InuYasha. Rather than remake the series, I want to continue the story and expand the world with its iconic characters. Give it basically The Lord Of The Rings treatment on a micro-budget.

7. Any tips for anyone who wants to get into film?

If you wanna make a massive epic or special effects driven film, you gotta be well prepared. Make sure you’ve got all that you need listed and bought and have it all organized so your set to shoot when you’re ready.
