Round 2: Capture the Orb!

Electricity is in the smallest of things, something as small as a battery can hold 3.5 watts. A battery on its own can generate 1.5 volts, if something were to… force it out. The entire 3.5 watts in less than a second, that may be enough to give someone a good shock. If we were to scale this up to 50 watts in less than a second, you may be able to deal a lot of damage.

Zeke was incredibly nervous, his first fight! Even if it was just Capture the Flag it’s still very stressful. Apparently his opponent was someone called Koatsu. 

“Who is he? What does he do? How does he do?. I could ask the 1A or 1B kids, but nah, this is my first one. I gotta do it on my own.” Zeke said to, noone really. Zeke has no idea who this person is, what their Quirk is or even what they look like. 

‘I gotta prepare for any and every situation to come up.’ 

“My Quirk is useless on its own, I gotta get some items and some range. UUUUGGGHHH, but what if they have a teleportation or speed quirk? What  happens when they bring the fight to me? I gotta expect the unexpected which means I have to do something unexpected, something… Funky.” 

After some brainstorming Zeke came up with a plan: Step 1: Get some distance. 

Step 2: Get to the Orb ASAP Step 3: ???

Step 4: Win

Needs some more work. 

Step 1: Get some distance Step 2: Use Reginald to get the Orb Step 3: Move Reginald unpredictably

Step 4: Move yourself unpredictably

Step 5: Win

Dammit! What if there’s an angle I’m not seeing!

Step 0: Find out the enemies Quirk

Step 1: Improvise.

Perfect.

It was the day of Capture the Orb and after a bit of experimenting, Zeke had his equipment ready. Reginald, the RC car Zeke got for his 14th birthday, now with a small net on spokes duct taped to the top, Zeke lost the remote to Reginald ages ago but can still control it with his quirk. 

His weapon of choice however was the “Car Battery”, jumper cables attached to a car battery. 

The area the match takes place in is a small warehouse in the middle of an empty courtyard, it looks like it used to be an old Food Court. Standing at the edge of the marked area Zeke couldn’t help but feel a little nervous. His first actual fight, not just a street brawl. With Reginald already turned on and ready to go, Zeke had the “Car Battery” hanging off his belt loops. 

The teachers were given different areas to watch over, his area happened to be one with the Class B teacher, she was scary, can’t remember her name though. “3, 2, 1… GO!” a voice rang through his earpiece… his earpiece, surely the opponent would have one as well. Not having time for the rest of the thought  Zeke sprinted across the empty field, Reginald blazing ahead. 

Reaching the door to the warehouse Zeke slammed into the door. It didn’t budge, he tried pushing again, harder this time. 

It read Pull.

“Fuck.”

Wasting precious seconds Zeke finally made his way into the warehouse, the door to the other side also flung open. The Orb resting on a pedestal in the middle. The whole warehouse was buzzing with lights, electrical sockets, wires, switches, batteries, it was hard to pinpoint just one source. Taking a second to tune out all the ‘still buzzes’, the electronics that aren’t doing anything. Zeke’s senses had calmed down, he can think, he can fight. 

Step 0: Find out the enemies Quirk.

Zeke sucks at being sneaky, he’s like a bull in a china shop. He walked over to the Orb Pedestal, Zeke had tunnel vision so the only thing that warned him was a new small buzz just being turned on a buzz that was still until a moment ago. Zeke did a full 180 to see Koatsu swinging with a baton, it’s buzz seemed to wrap around the whacky bit… 

KZZZTT 

Sparks of electricity arched out the tip, and stopped suddenly. WHACK! Stopping the electricity was all he could do, not the actual baton. Knocked to the ground, Zeke finally got a good look at Koatsu. He’s fuckin scary. 

Koatsu seemed satisfied enough with the hit and left Zeke on the ground still a little dazed. 

‘I’ve got a read on him now.’

Following the two small buzzes Zeke turned on the “Car Battery” but stopped any electricity coming through. Weaving through the warehouse Zeke had no idea where the Orb was or even where he was. 

“Gotta find out his Quirk. Gotta suprise him.”

Zeke closed his eyes and took some deep breaths.

“I don’t need to see for this.”

All those ‘still buzzes’ came back, if slightly tuned out. Zeke could sense the electricity in the walls, the wires under the floor, the alarm system above him, the fuse box on the outside of the warehouse, the batteries in the boxes on shelves. Reginal, The Baton and the earpiece. He could almost see the movements they made, the arm swinging, the head bopping and he could definitely hear Koatsu’s footsteps. 

Reginald moves very quickly, the box says 45km/h and that's not with the overclocking Zeke can give. With some fancy weaving and plain old luck on Zeke’s end, he heard a slight slam, an oof and the sound of something rolling. 

“Gotcha.”

Reginald ended up catching Koatu’s foot in the net, sending him tumbling down. The Orb rolled along the ground, somewhere and somewhen Koatsu had picked up the Orb. After regaining his senses Koatsu finally showed his Quirk.

A wall of Green Flames erupted between the two stopping Zeke in his tracks. A fire quirk huh?

Step 1: Improvise. 

‘Alright Zeke, focus. Time to do something Funky.’

Zeke split his focus into 5 things: Reginald, The Baton, The Car Battery and the two lights above them. Reginald pushed the Orb out of Koatsu's reach, The Baton and The Car Battery both had their electricity held, effectively useless. The two lights above them flared in brightness. 

Koatsu recovered and was on his feet before the flames receded, slightly blinded by the lights above. Reginald didn’t have the body dynamics to control the Orb properly, so it hadn’t gone very far yet. Koatsu caught up and kicked Reginald off the ground just as the flames started receding.

‘He kicked Reginald.’

“You kicked Reginald! You bastard.”

Dropping his focus on The Baton and the Lights Zeke unwrapped the jumper cable and started swinging it in a circular motion.

“Hey Asshole!”

Koatsu turned to face Zeke, and Zeke let that cable fly. Zeke overcharged the cable and hit Koatsu square in the side of the head.

KKKKZZZZZZZZTTTZTZTZT.

For just a moment Koatsu became a face contorted in pain and a spasming body, his hair even stood on end.

Dropping to the ground, unconscious Koatsu was down. Zeke took a second to check Koatsu’s breathing and heartbeat, not great, but not damaged. 

“Take ‘em home Reginald.” Straightening up Reginald, Zeke placed the Orb in the net. Once out of the warehouse Zeke had Reginald cross the line first, didn’t count though. Only when Zeke crossed the line and picked up the Orb did the horn ring. 

“The fire wasn’t hot...”

Zeke had passed Round 2(?) and with it had cemented his place in Taiyuu.

Poetry, Short stories and Articles Read This Month

How anti-Semitism led Shatner and Nimoy to Boldly Go to Hollywood/Nathan Abrams-Probably because I read a whole thesis which included this small topic in it before I read this but it felt very unsatisfactory. It did talk about what of his Jewishness Nimoy put into the character of Spock but mostly it seemed to mourn that Shatner didn’t seem to do that with Kirk. Probably a good read if you’re looking to read something quick on Jews putting their Jewishness into a character (not necessarily Nimoy’s into Spock).

Heinlein’s Juveniles vs. Andre Norton Young Adult Novels/James Davis Nicoll-This was a nice overview of where the two authors differed and how we see them in the modern day. I think I’ll check out an Andre Norton sci fi book despite not liking her prose in the one (non-sci fi) book of hers I read.

Did We ALL Write a Book About Space Elevators? Why Unfortunate Coincidences Happen In Science Fiction/James Davis Nicoll-Too short. It didn’t really explore it’s premise.

Short Stories

On Venus, Have We Got a Rabbi/William Tenn-I’m going to admit that despite hearing of this over and over it took a few tries for me to read it. It has a rambling style that was hard for me to get into, especially when I saw how long it was for a short story. What I recommend is listening to the audio as it really gets you in the atmosphere-since the story is written with a very characterized narrator. All that said, after the real story started I got pulled in and I really liked it. 3.5/5 stars

For He Can Creep/Siobhan Carroll-TW: self harm, suicide mention, 18th c. mental hospitals. This was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the style it was written in-from the POV to the dialogue to the descriptions.

The Thames Valley Catastrophe/Grant Allen-I liked this one. I enjoyed the writing style. TW: body horror 4.2/5 stars

The Doom of London/Robert Barr-I thought I would like this one less than the other because I don’t like the style of breaking up a short story into sections, but after the first section I got pulled in enough to enjoy it. The concept was really cool and the invention concept was also really cool. TW: death, gore?, body horror 4/5 stars

The Tilting Island/Thomas J. Vivian and Grena J. Bennett-I can’t find a link for this one. The beginning started out good but then the authors weren’t able to uphold the suspense in a way that the end was satisfactory. 2.7/5 stars

Finis/Frank Lillie Pollock-I did not like this one. Partially it was because the blurb I read about it was wrong and so I expected the wrong things out of it, but it is also because that while the story centers on the characters the characters don’t have any personalities. 2/5 stars

An Express of the Future/Jules Verne-The blurb for this said that it went missing for many years. I am not surprised because it is not well written at all. It ends with it all being a dream which every kid knows is a bad plot device unless you have a very good excuse. 2/5 stars

The Ray of Displacement/Harriet Prescott Spofford-I would have enjoyed this even with the paragraphs of jumbled science language if it hadn’t been for St. Angel. He appears out of nowhere and it isn’t clear who he is or what he is doing or even how he gets to where the main character is. Unfortunately, the end is centered around him. Other than him I enjoyed the character of Judge Brant and there were some really funny sentences. 2/5 stars

Congealing the Ice Trust/Capt. H.G. Bishop-Again, I can’t find a link. That’s disappointing because this one was fun even if the plot was a bit hard to follow (with the addendum that I was in pain while reading it). 4/5

Lord Beden’s Motor/J.B. Harris-Burland-I’m starting to think that I shouldn’t try to review stories I read while I was woozy with pain (even though I’m reviewing them while in pain too). I think all I can say is that it’s a ghost story and ghost stories just aren’t to my personal taste so it didn’t interest me.

The Death-Trap/George Daulton-no link again. It has that thing of trusting someone immediately cause they seem gentle which I don’t like for many reasons. I wish it concentrated more on the search for the monster and finding it because the monster itself was pretty cool. TW: gore 2.5/5 stars

The Air Serpent/Will A. Page-no link. It’s really cool that this concept existed because with our modern day knowledge it’s impossible outside of high fantasy. Unfortunately for the story, our modern day knowledge of how prey animals work sort of ruined it for me. 3/5 stars

The Monster of Lake LaMetrie/Wardon Allan Curtis-Gotta love the sharp turn into eugenics. It’s a pity because before that the story was really cool. 1/5 stars

The Voice in the Night/William Hope Hodgeson-This was pretty cool. I’m not sure if you shouldn’t read it if you love or hate mushrooms though. Personally, I belong to the second camp, so maybe it’s don’t read it if you’re disgusted by fungi. 3/5 stars

The Land Ironclads/H.G. Wells-It’s definitely interesting to read from a modern perspective. I liked the character of the mc and that the story didn’t wash over the deaths but didn’t describe them in detail either.

The Dam/Hugh S. Johnson-The plot twist is very clever but the building up to it took too long, and the two captains and their rivalry was confusing to me. 2.5/5 stars

Submarined/Walter Wood-I liked it, and I feel like I shouldn’t because it ended pretty violently but I did. Daring and sacrifice and all that is very feel-good, and it was well-written. 5/5 stars

The Purple Terror/Fred M. White-Could we have this without the racism please? It was good except for the underlying racism all throughout. 2/5 stars

Professor Jonkin’s Cannibal Plant/Howard R. Garis-This was definitely a change from the other stories. They were all adult fiction and this is MG fiction. It was okay, nothing special. 3/5 stars

An Experiment in Gyro Hats/Ellis Parker Butler-This continues the sort of humor that’s in the last story but it’s back to adult fiction which, personally, I enjoy more when it comes to this kind of humor. I liked the narrator’s voice. 3.5/5 stars

The Hybrid Hyperborean Ant/Roy L. McCardell-The idea was nice but it could have been better executed. I felt like I was told the story rather than experiencing it. 2/5 stars

Where the Air Quivered/L.T. Meade and Robert Eustace-Pretty cool, but nothing special. 4/5 stars

In Re State vs Forbes/Warren Earle-This was less science fiction and more ghost story. Again, ghost stories don’t really interest me so I can’t review it properly but I found the ending to be far too unrealistic with no explanation for my taste.

Old Dr. Rutherford/D.F. Hannigan-Ugh. The writing itself was fine but I absolutely hated the main character; usually that doesn’t bother me but I hated him so much that it did here. I think it would have been much more interesting if it had been written from Hafiz’s POV instead of an omniscient one. 2/5 stars

Itself/Edgar Mayhew Bacon-This was a really good one. I loved the storytelling. I might try to find more stories by the same author to read. 4.5/5 stars

Citizen 504/Charles H. Palmer-This is interesting in that it’s an early dystopian story. Less interesting in that because it’s an earlier one it has the same plot points of every modern one and wraps up everything neatly with a bow. I wish he’d taken the time to explore the world more. 3/5 stars

The Mansion of Forgetfulness/Don Mark Lemon-Finally a story with a link. It’s a good story to choose to end an anthology on as it’s short and wraps up well but not too nicely (with a bow). Although it’s short and the ending is expected the execution is done well in my opinion. 3.5/5

But will Madi’s perspective change when a certain Brit becomes one of Chris’ cast mates?

Hearing the door open, Madi looked up into the mirror, watching through the reflection as her now four-year-old, Clayton, ran into her bedroom. Turning in her chair, she greeted her son with a wide smile as she tried to put in her earring.

“Why am I at home? It’s Tuesday, I gotta be at school!” Both parents of the boy believed strongly in the importance of education, even if it was preschool. Even at his young age, Clayton knew his parents would not let him stay home unless it was important. Fastening earring in place, Madi picked up her son, turning them around to face the mirror. She began to brush her fingers through his messy hair, answering his question as well.

“Well, one year ago today your daddy and I fell in love. We wanted to include our favorite person in the celebrations. Plus, daddy has a surprise for us.” Upon hearing his favorite word, Clayton perked up, eager to know what his father had planned.

“What’s the surprise, mummy?” Madi smiled at what Clayton had called her; after spending a year with Tom as his dad the boy began to pick up traces of a British accent, specifically with the word with which he addressed her. Hearing the young child’s question, Tom recognized a perfect opportunity to scare his two favorite people, putting his hands on the shoulders of his girlfriend.

“You don’t really understand the concept of a surprise, do you, Clay?” Upon seeing his father, Clayton’s smile grew, jumping out of his mother’s arms and into the warm embrace of his father.

“Daddy! What’s the surprise?” Tom looked between Madi and their son, weighing his options.

“You can’t tell mummy, okay?” Clayton nodded eagerly, excited to hear what would be happening later that day. Tom moved his head as close as possible to Clayton’s, speaking so quietly he could barely be heard. Hearing what his father’s surprise was, Clayton smiled wider than his parents had ever seen. He quickly fought his way out of his father’s grasp, running out of the room.

“What are we waiting for?”

Tom and Madi walked hand in hand behind Chris and Clayton, the latter two to drive home later to let the couple go to dinner alone. The four were walking down a trail that was part of the park in which the couple had become official, the place now referred to as ‘their spot’.

Chris bent down to Clayton’s level, whispering something in his ear. This message prompted the boy to turn around and run up to his mother, grabbing her open hand.

“Mummy, look at the the baby ducks in the pond!” While the boy was four, he was strong, pulling his mother away from his father. Madi released her hand that was grasping Tom’s, turning and smiling at him. The mother and son walked down to the pond, talking about how cute the baby birds were.

About two minutes later, Clayton looked back towards his dad, seeing that it was his turn again. The boy touched his mother repeatedly on the arm,

“Mum, look, daddy is doing something silly!” Madi smiled at her son’s excitement, then turning around, expecting to see a funny sight.

Instead she was met with Tom, five feet away, down on one knee as looked up at her lovingly. The breath in Madi’s throat hitched, her body frozen. Seeing his mother’s stuck position, Clayton pushed her towards Tom. Once he had accomplished that, Clay ran towards his uncle, who was now with another one of his uncles, Harry, who was capturing the moment.

Tom took both of Madi’s hands in his own, not looking away from her for one second. Both of them had smiles plastered across their face and love-sick eyes, almost as if they were two teenagers in love.

“Warning, this is about to be the cheesiest thing on the planet, but that’s okay, you love cheesy, it’s how Chris taught you.” The two chuckled as their cheeks reddened, although the tears running down them sent the red away.

“Madilyn Rosaline Evans, I have been in love with you for the past year, and it has be the best freaking year of my entire life. You showed me a life I didn’t even realize I wanted, but God, I couldn’t live without it now. You have taught me how to be a better man, how to appreciate the little things in life, how to make the best out of any situation, how to love and care for someone while also doing the same for myself, but most importantly, what it means to be a father. When we met I was a mere twenty-one, I didn’t want a serious relationship, I didn’t want to be part of a fast-paced couple, and God, I did not want kids at that moment. But then I met you, and all of this unwants disappeared. You make me feel like I am the luckiest person in the world, while also making me feel like I am the only person in the world. You make me believe that love at first sight is real. You make me challenge myself to be better, not just for you and Clay, but also for my own being. You make me fall in love with you every single day by being yourself. You make me want to be with you for the rest of my life. With that, I ask you, Madilyn Rosaline Evans, my best friend, my lover, the mother of my child, the love of my life, will you marry me?”

Okay! I am a 17 year old male who has been driving in total for 2 years and I have unfortunately had 2 accidents. The first occurred in May of last year. A family member is diagnosed with something similar as cancer. She works for a big fortunate 500 company and so far, there is no sign the company will fire her. I have USAA as my auto insurance. Here's the back story. Food, Coffee, More Coffee: Inside the Spending Habits of a Working Student

I don’t think my spending habits are too bad, but I do have my slip-ups. This year, I’ve been pretty good at keeping my spending in check, but we’ll see how that progresses/devolves as the holidays draw closer. I do know that, day to day, most of my money goes to food and coffee. Although I often eat at home — I love making breakfast and try to have either lunch or dinner at home every day too — it still has a way of adding up.

Also, I guess I should mention that I work at Man Repeller AND am finishing up my BFA at the School of Visual Arts, which means I require a good amount of coffee just to keep me alive and kickin’. It also means I’m trying to balance a budget that accommodates both work and school. On most Thursdays and Fridays, I’m home finishing up assignments, cleaning and generally relaxing (which helps me save), but this week was different, and my budget took a hit as a result. You’ll see what I mean. With that, here’s what I spent my money on this week.

Today, my friend Maria and I are taking a day trip to Storm King Art Center, wahoo! Before I leave, I run downstairs and redeem my free, medium-sized beverage from Think Coffee thanks to my loyalty points. (Funny story: My loyalty account is for some reason linked to my cousin’s phone number, so she gets all my receipts. Hi Jaime! She likes knowing how my week is going. Large coffees = rough week.)

There’s only one food option at Storm King so I get an above-average vegetarian chili and a decent chocolate chip cookie. After our shenanigans upstate, we part ways and I come home and make pasta for dinner because wowee, I am so hungry. At 9:45 p.m. I run (okay, fine, walk) to CVS and buy Tide Pods because I already committed to doing my laundry and, surprise!, had no detergent left.

I usually walk to work, but this morning I wake up late and can’t figure out what to wear (UGH) so I have to take the subway. I put $20 on my Metrocard for this trip plus future use. I study photography and primarily use film for my personal work, so I drop off a roll of film that I took yesterday at Storm King. Thankfully, I save a couple of dollars by just getting it processed and scanning it myself at school. My buddies at Two Hands bless my wallet and give me a discount on my coffee and don’t charge me for my 3 p.m. orange juice. I get home from work pretty late so I spend the rest of my night watching YouTube videos and eating leftover pasta. SO fun.

Another exciting day at work! Pretty sure I was still tired from my day trip to Storm King and finishing up all the props for the MR GIFT GUIDE (!!!!) so I had two coffees today. This is why I am good friends with the people at Two Hands: a minimum of two visits a day builds a strong relationship. Then, Madi tricks me into getting lunch with her at Sweetgreen, but then bails to By Chloe, so I am stuck eating yet another Harvest Bowl alone (add avocado, no cheese, swap almonds for pecans, tysm). After work, I have one too many alcoholic beverages and plenty of mini snacks at the MR Ralph Lauren event. I mistakenly think that means I’m set on dinner but, 30 minutes after, when I start scanning film at school, I feel hungry again.

When I finally get home, I whip up a gourmet meal (toast and butter) for dinner and then realize that I left MY ONLY USB CABLE in the office and so, while my phone is slowly dying , I decide to get one on Amazon. (Another funny story: I thought, “Hey, maybe I should buy an extra USB cable” while walking past the Apple store that evening on the way back from the event but didn’t buy it!)

Today the water is out on Mott St. (where the MR office is located) and so my beloved Two Hands is closed (honestly they just need to #sponsor me at this point), so I get a coffee from Cafe Grumpy instead. Good thing I have a loyalty card going there too! I also get more film processed, woohoo! I decide to go to Maman for lunch today because I just really need a sandwich. Then, Emily and I stay pretty late at work finishing up the gift guide but I still manage to make yet another bowl of pasta for dinner when I get home (I’m having a phase).

TWO HANDS IS STILL CLOSED BECAUSE THE WATER IS STILL OUT! Cafe Grumpy it is. I usually don’t work on Thursdays but we had to finish wrapping up the final gift guide shoot. I make it back home in time for some lunch before class so I whip myself up some eggs on toast and then head to school. I spend three hours talking about photographs with my thesis class and then have a nice dinner with my friends at Goemon Curry! (PSA: they have cutlery that looks like little rakes and shovels.) I head back to work for a little bit after that to finish up random bits and bobs and then come home and sleep like a baby for the next couple of hours….

….Before I wake up late for a shoot happening this morning, ACK! I didn’t have time for breakfast so I run to Irving Farm to redeem my free coffee and get a croissant. I didn’t have time for lunch before going to class so I grab a brownie and another coffee during break so my stomach stops making weird noises in class. Usually I don’t do anything on Fridays because I prefer to chill at home and eat MORE pasta but tonight is different because it’s my friend Margo’s birthday and we celebrate with beers! A friend and I have a pre-celebration dinner at Big Daddy’s which includes a very delicious veggie burger and sweet potato tots. 10/10 would recommend.

HAPPY SATURDAY! I spend the first half of the day at home cleaning my apartment and having lunch before going to Chillhouse for a manicure. Before heading in I wander around Soho and am, of course, hankering for a snack and so I, of course, go to Two Hands, because I gotta stay loyal. This is actually the first manicure I’ve ever gotten in New York since moving here 3.5 years ago. It was a very long and stressful week so I decided to treat myself to some pretty nails since I don’t think I will have to paint anything in awhile (fingers crossed) (don’t look at me Emily).

While in the area, I pop over to Top Hat and buy some presents for friends and myself because Christmas is near! And you know who likes gifts? Me. Also my friends! But mostly me. On my way home I make more exciting purchases at the supermarket. Grocery haul you say? NO PROBLEMO! I got bananas, sparkling water, pasta sauce, pasta and a bottle of blood orange juice and kombucha.

BAM! DONE! Money spent! Honestly this week has just been a documentation of how many times I go to Two Hands in a week and also how much coffee I consume, which isn’t usually this much, I promise. I actually don’t feel that bad about the money I spent because I had a great week and I did a couple of special things like go to Storm King and get a manicure, but I do want to keep working on my spending habits.

For now I’m just gonna sit back, relax, and wait for my mother to make a comment about how much caffeine I drink.
