the way people online talk about autism is getting really weird, like do they know that neurotypicals still have interests? that someone being passionate about a hobby doesn't mean they're autistic? you guys know that right

not to be controversial bc I know this is likeā€¦not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if thereā€™s a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formattingā€¦I will also not be offended by having this pointed outļæ½ļæ½ļæ½
ā€˜looking forward to the next updateā€™ and ā€˜I hope you update soon!ā€™ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.
ā€˜I donā€™t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel somethingā€™ is also incredibly high praise. Iā€™m not going to get mad at this.
even ā€˜I love this fic but Iā€™m curious about why you made [x] choiceā€™ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.
I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment thatā€™s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner theyā€™re hoping to receive it in bad faith.
fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes itā€™s frustrating but it isnā€™t as though I canā€™t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.
idk where Iā€™m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me Iā€™m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.

Dick who climbed on anything as a child. Even in public, especially in public. The moment Bruce looks away, he is climbing something to get as high as possible. The first times, it gave Bruce an heart attack. Now, it's just a headache.
People pass by and ask if they should call the firefighters, and Bruce tiredly tell them "He is fine, he can get down on his own.", like people with cats.
Imagine, you're walking out of some building, only to see a 10 years old standing on top of a lamppost, having a discussion with his dad guardian at the bottom.
"Dick, get down."
"Make me."
"Get down or you're grounded."

Because i feel like i might be overestimating what the average is, i shall Conduct Research
This isn't about how many languages you speak, but how many youre able to count up to at least 10 in, since basic numbers are some of the first words you learn in a foreign language and sometimes you catch them without having studied the language at all

And lemme know your age (if you feel comfortable!), and when you got your first phone in the tags!
If these options are scuffed I'm sorry, I genuinely have no clue how many phones people are "supposed" to have had (hence the poll)

I got this comment on a story from my Other AO3 Account this morning.
Tumblr media
(Info redacted because I prefer keeping these accounts separate but no one follows me on the side blog I have for that account.)
The story was posted almost a year ago and is relatively ā€œpopularā€ by my average statistics even though it has tropes and themes that are big turnoffs for a lot of people (hence separate accounts). This popularity is undoubtedly because itā€™s a Marvel Loki story and that fandom is massive.
So there is obviously an algorithm or a bot scrubbing ao3 statistics and leaving this comment on fics that meet a certain metric with the main character of the fic inserted into the comment.
I had a little time to kill this morning so I decided to investigate further. And yā€™all this is so predatory. Come on this journey with me. It made me mad. It may make you mad.
First, if you go to Webnovelā€™s website, you HAVE to choose between male lead or female lead stories before you can go any further. WTF?
Tumblr media
And thatā€™s weird, but this gets so much worse. This is basically a pay-to-read site that has different subscription models. Whichā€¦ okay BUT! The authors donā€™t get paid! Look at that comment again. Theyā€™re promising a supportive and nurturing community, but zero monetary compensation. Itā€™s basically, ā€œpost your stuff here so we can get paid and you can getā€¦ nice vibes?ā€ I mean look at this Orwellian writing:
Tumblr media
Using the phrase ā€œpay-to-read modelā€ in the same sentence as ā€œqualitative changes in lifestyles for authorsā€ deliberately makes you think that you can get paid and maybe even make a living on this website. But thatā€™s not actually what it says and authors will not receive one red cent.
Oh but wait, the worst is still to come. In case this breaks containment (which I kind of hope it does) this is where I mention that Iā€™m a lawyer in the US.
I donā€™t do intellectual property or copyright law but I do read and write contracts for a living. So I went to look at their terms of service. It was fun!
Highlights the first, in which Webnovel gets a license to do basically whatever they want with content you post on their site. This is how they get to be paid for people reading authorsā€™ writing without paying them anything.
Tumblr media
Highlights the second, in which Webnovel takes no responsibility for illegally profiting off of fan fic. This all says that the writer is 100% responsible for everything the writer posts (even though only Webnovel is making money from it).
Tumblr media
Highlights the third which say that by posting, the author is representing that they have the legal right to use and to let Webnovel use the content according to these terms. So if a writer posts fan fiction and Webnovel makes money from people reading the fan fiction, and the House of the Mouse catches wise, these sections say that thatā€™s ALL on the writer.
Tumblr media
So thatā€™s a little skeevy to start off with but the thing that is seriously shitty and made me make this post was that these assholes are coming to ao3. They are actively recruiting people in comments on their fan fiction. And they are saying they are big fans of the character youā€™re writing about and that they share your interests.
Tumblr media
They are recruiting fan fiction writers and giving every impression that you can make money from posting fan fiction on their site and hiding the fact that you absolutely cannot but they can make money off of you while you try, deep in their terms of service which no one but a lawyer who writes fan fic and has some time to kill will read.
I see posts on here regularly from people who donā€™t understand how this stuff works, donā€™t understand that they (and others) can not legally make a financial profit from fan fiction. And there are tons of people who will not take the time to dig into the details.
Donā€™t deal with these bastards. Fuck Webnovel.

You know what I cannot wait for? The day we have an election and we donā€™t have to say vote like your life depends on it because it does. This man has seeped into every facet of our lives for almost TEN years. Think about that. With one simple vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz heā€™s cooked-forever, and we wonā€™t have to deal with that urgency again. We can have real policy debates and make actual progress again, once he is gone for good. So letā€™s do this thing one last time letā€™s vote like our lives depend on it and get back a better politic.
