My eyes train on her gaze again. “I’m your boyfriend; I have a right to know these things. But I don’t have to tell you anything, Riley. You aren’t my girlfriend.” 

She looks as if I’ve slapped her. Tears well in her eyes.  

“You BASTARD!” she hisses through clenched teeth.  

I feel my impatience rising. “What? YOU say I’m your boyfriend. I have never once labeled you. I made a concession to appease you.” 

Her hand swings blindly out, knocking over the desk lamp; I set the apparatus upright. My eyes narrow as I walk towards her.  

“I’m not going to negotiate with you Riley. It’s obvious you need to cool down.” 

My hand curls around her upper arm before pulling it behind her; I then do the same to her other arm. She’s struggling to free herself as I frog march her to the patio doors. Her eyes widen in confusion when I unlock and open a French door. 

I gently push her out the door. I feel sprays of cool rain on my wrist. Her eyes are huge with panic; her face is filled with hurt and disbelief when she chances a glance at my impassive face.  

“You need to think about your actions. I’ll return for you.”  

And I shut the door.  

I hear her fists pounding on glass and her voice shrieking my name as I make my way downstairs. I slide my feet into a pair of thonged leather sandals and put my pack of cigarettes and a lighter into my sweatpants’ pocket.  

I go into the master bathroom to pull an Egyptian cotton towel from the linen closet. I toss it over my shoulder.  

I stop in the entry hall and grab a golf umbrella from the brass bucket next to the coat rack.  

I then return to the study; I light a cigarette as I stare at Riley, a sodden heap in the narrow doorway. She doesn’t look up when I open the door, and step outside.  

I walk over her, the umbrella shielding me from the elements. I face her, but she has her face hidden in the crook of her arm. From me or the rain, I don’t know.  

“Stand up, Riley,” I order.  

She finally lifts her head to meet my gaze. She’s crying. Her makeup is streaked. Raindrops fall from the ends of her hair.  

“FUCK YOU!” she screams. “I’m going HOME!” 

“You brought this on yourself. I have asked nothing of you but simple requests: come straight home after work, sit still, be quiet. And you can’t do it. You just can’t. So, if you wish to return to your apartment where you can do what you want, when you want, and with whomever you want … feel free.” 

She struggles to rise to her feet.  

“Or you can apologize to me for your completely uncalled for behavior and let me continue to take care of you.” 

I drag deeply on my cigarette as we hold a staring contest.  

She steps out of the Louboutins, and runs to me; her wet body presses against my bare chest as she wraps her arms around me. Her body shakes with sobs and trembles. I pitch the cigarette to adjust the angle of the umbrella so we’re both covered.  

I’ll dispose of the tobacco product properly after the rain ends.  

I wrap her in the towel and press my lips to her wet hair.  

“There’s my good girl,” I whisper as I lead us back inside.

Eugenia’s house in Spain once belonged to the grandparents and she bought it for emotional reasons to keep the house still owned by the family. The goal of renovation was to create a simple and relaxed bohemian home. The decor is a carefree combination of different styles of furniture and there are many interesting details in the home.

In the living room, 18th century sofa reupholstered in Parisian velvet. The paint on the walls, are mineral pigments in white, blood red and lavender.

In the fireplace, the andirons were found in the house. On the wall, a medley of dishes: some from Eugenia, her family and others from Paris.

In a corner of the library, a tobacco-colored sofa, tables with tiles, and an armchair that Eugenia reupholstered.

In the kitchen, on the French butcher's table is a jug from Uruguay. The tiles are old Portuguese from the 19th century.

Next to the window in the living room, a table with a cage. On the wall, a 19th century French clock and seats lined with macramé. The floor lamp was in the house.

In her bedroom, a flea market table, photos of Eugenia with black wooden frames from Ikea and a glass with olive branches. Also a bright red 50's gooseneck and an Austrian garden chair.

In the guest room, a crucifix of olive stalks and Creole paintings of the 1920s are over the bed. The Scottish tartan wool blanket and cushions are from Edinburgh.
