Year-End Poll #62: 2011
Tumblr media
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: Adele, LMFAO, Katy Perry, Pitbull, Bruno Mars, CeeLo Green, Nicki Minaj, Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera, The Black Eyed Peas. End description]
More information about this blog here
Electropop and dance are continuing to be the most popular sound in pop music. LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem is notable, not only for the song's chart performance, but for its production and songwriting style. We're starting to see the rise of the wordless chorus, which will come to define a lot of pop music in the 2010's. It makes sense that this style would take off with the rise of EDM in the mainstream (especially festival EDM), but we'll also start to see this shift towards wordless choruses in pop and rock. If you're familiar with the "Millennial Whoop", you may be able to recognize where this is going.
But despite the rise of electronic music, it's still interesting that there are multiple songs on this poll with retro influences. With Adele's Rolling in the Deep, CeeLo Green's Fuck/Forget You, and maybe some elements of Maroon 5's Moves like Jagger. We'll continue to see this influence in later years (especially when more songs start using brass instruments in their production), but it will pale in comparison to the electronic sound.
Speaking of CeeLo Green's hit this year, whether you want to give the slot to the "fuck version" or the "forget version" is up to you. It seems like both versions had relatively equal levels of success (with the censored version doing better on radio and the explicit version doing better on iTunes). Usually Billboard distinguishes between different versions of songs when releasing their charts, but I just see the two versions lumped together. So just assume that this poll is listing whichever version you're more familiar with.

What songs I think the School Bus Graveyard Kids listen to/like
Tumblr media
I think the whole fandom has collectively decided that Meet You at the Graveyard by Cleffy is the entire groups song. but might I add As the World Caves In by Matt Maltese and 505 by Arctic Monkeys as entire group songs?
For Ashlyn I feel like she would love Rio Romeo's Nothing's New AJR's Touchy Feely Fool Paramore's Misery Business and Lesley Gore's You Don't Own Me
For Aiden we already know he loves Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO, Lauren Bennett and GoonRock. I feel like he would love Maroon 5's Sugar (and would think about Ashlyn while listening to it). Roar's Christmas Kids Gorillaz's Feel Good Inc. and Insane Clown Posse's Imma Kill U
For Tyler I feel like since he doesn't seem to enjoy Aiden's taste in music, he would probably lean more towards Rammstein's Sonne Muse's Time is Running Out MARINA's Are You Satisfied? and Fall Out Boy's Centuries
For Taylor I feel like she has a similar taste in music to Tyler, (probably because he always has the AUX), but she would lean more toward Aiden's music taste after they all become friends. So I feel like she would like, I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry Maisie Peter's Psycho Taylor Swift's Shake It Off and Paris Paloma's labour
Ben probably listens to lofi hiphop. like I don't know what else he would listen too because he is just - no emotion or horrified half the time- so I'm just gonna say lofi hiphop and if you have an idea about what Ben would like let me know.
Finally, Logan's music taste would probably be oldies but goodies. Remember he grew up with his grandparents so that's probably what he listens to the most. So in that case, Paul Anka's Put Your Head On My Shoulder The Foundations' Build Me Up Buttercup The Beatles' Hey Jude and Journey's Don't Stop Believin'
Anyway-
Let me know what you think!

King of Prussia, PA — VoicePlay live performances
Tumblr media
For the penultimate show in their 2019 Warm Up holiday tour, the merry gentlemen of VoicePlay headed to southeastern Pennsylvania. They spread some holiday cheer with their signature blend of vocal skill and crowd-pleasing antics.
Most of these recordings are missing the very beginnings of the songs, but that's just because the audience member was too busy enjoying their performance to prioritize acting as a videographer. And we can't really blame her for that.
.
youtube
Even though it was a holiday show, the guys also sprinkled in some tunes from the rest of their catalogue. This recent addition to their repertoire is as vocally challenging as it is lyrically touching.
Details:
title: Tennessee Whiskey
original song / performers: David Allan Coe (1981); inspired by the Chris Stapleton version (2015)
written by: Dean Dillon & Linda Hargrove
arranged by: Layne Stein
performance date: 20 December 2019
My favorite bits:
Eli's casual agility on those riffs and runs
the way J.None plays with the rhythm in the second verse, adding little pushes and pulls
Geoff conducting himself through those tricky bass riffs
Layne's descending tom run to punctuate the big build-up
Earl, Eli, and J pulling off that harmonized riffing
the rich, warm final chord
Trivia:
The music video for this song was released in the spring as an entry in their PartWork series. Considering how nervous most of them had been to record that version, it's impressive that they decided to perform it live.
.
youtube
Some holiday music is soft and solemn. Some is celebratory and fun. In true VoicePlay fashion, they decided to combine both and create this joyous romp through the virtual snow.
Details:
title: Santa and I Know It
original songs / performers: modern English Christmas carol "Carol of the Bells"; "Sexy and I Know It" by LMFAO
written by: "Carol of the Bells" melody composed by Mykola Leontovych under the title "Shchedryk" (1914), with English lyrics added by Peter Wilhousky (1936); "Sexy and I Know It" by Stefan Kendal Gordy, David Jamahl "GoonRock" Listenbee, Erin Beck, George M. Robertson, & Kenneth Oliver
arranged by: VoicePlay
performance date: 20 December 2019
My favorite bits:
the trio adopting an operatic tone for the classical portion
Eli picking up the scratching in the transition
Layne dropping in a quick squat before Earl does his big flex 💪
J throwing in some extra riffs for fun
Trivia:
This song had been part of their holiday setlists since the 4:2:Five days. The earliest recording I've found is from their time as the Polar Express Conductors show at SeaWorld in 2011.
They first recorded it for their 2012 holiday album "Peppermint Winter".
It was a staple in their residency shows for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at Disney World.
.
youtube
These guys love The Nightmare Before Christmas, which is why they've recorded and performed their own versions of several songs from the movie's soundtrack. This one spotlights Geoff in the title role, but these guys always make sure that everyone gets a moment to play.
Details:
title: Oogie Boogie's Song
original performer: Ken Page as Oogie Boogie in The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
written by: Danny Elfman
arranged by: Layne Stein
performance date: 20 December 2019
My favorite bits:
Earl, Eli, and J.None bouncing in time with their syncopated ♫ "if you aren't shaking" ♫
Geoff rubbing his tummy as he sings about ♫ "snake and spider stew" ♫
the trio's silly minion voices in the breakdown section
that big brassy ♫ "Whooooa!" ♫ heading into the final verse
Layne being alarmed at the gestured implication that he might be the one at risk
Geoff nailing that final descent and subharmonic note
Trivia:
This song was the guys' Halloween offering for the year, with the music video debuting just two months earlier.
.
youtube
Vocal percussionists perform a vital role in a cappella groups, keeping the beat for the other singers, but that can make it easy to overlook their incredible skills. Layne takes a moment at center stage that can't be ignored.
Details:
title: Layne's percussion solo
written & arranged by: Layne Stein
performance date: 20 December 2019
My favorite bits:
the silly squeaky noises he makes during the setup process
settling into that relaxed groove
the decelleration into the more electronic sounding section
the vibrations from the speakers causing the stage skirt to floof out
that final decending tom run
Trivia:
Percussion solos are a time honored tradition among modern a cappella groups. It can also be fun to hear beatboxers' differing styles when they team up as they did during the 2014 and 2015 Sing-Off tours.
.
youtube
This mashup of classic tunes from the Rankin-Bass stop-motion animated holiday specials is sure to get your toes tapping. Especially when the guys themselves are clearly having such a good time on stage.
Details:
title: Frosty the Snowman
original performer: "Frosty the Snowman" by Gene Autry; "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" by Eddie Cantor
written by: "Frosty the Snowman" by Walter "Jack" Rollins & Steve Nelson; "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" by J. Fred Coots & Haven Gillespie
arranged by: VoicePlay
performance date: 20 December 2019
My favorite bits:
Eli's lovely, pure tone on the opening lead
J.None and Earl's impromptu knee-wiggle dance at the back
the slow bell chord on ♫ "when they placed it on his head" ♫
Earl's laser clear timbre at the start of "Santa Claus"
Eli fussing at the back when the others start rapping
their coordinated grooving to the front of the stage
Trivia:
The boys also started performing this mashup during their 4:2:Five days. The earliest recording I've found is from their stint as castmembers in the Polar Express Conductors holiday show at SeaWorld in 2011. (Go hear Layne sing bass!)
It was a staple of VoicePlay's holiday shows for many years, particularly during their Disney World residencies for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.
They recorded a swingier version of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" with their friend Michael Andrew for their 2012 holiday album "Peppermint Winter".
