Good Omens music compilation post
I just remembered that I accidentally predicted the ending of Good Omens Season 2 (sort of) in a fic, and wrote songs about it. *
* OK, I wrote lyrics about it. Rebecca Sugar wrote the songs.
(BTW, are those still called filks? I'm old.)
I never put all the songs/filks together in one post, so I'm making that post now. With lyrics! Just imagine Aziraphale and Crowley if they were far more emotionally expressive.
Originally, these songs were: 1) Drift Away, from the Steven Universe movie; 2) It's Over, Isn't It? from the Steven Universe episode Mr. Greg; and 3) Found, from the Steven Universe movie.
1 - Aziraphale Returns To Heaven
2 - Crowley Alone
3 - Together We're Home
These were fun to write, and it's nice to compile them all at last. I hope if you like angst, and hope, you'll give them a listen. :)
Lyrics under the cut:
See Him Again (set to Drift Away, from Steven Universe the movie, written by Rebecca Sugar, performed by Sarah Stiles)
AZIRAPHALE:
Calling to Heaven Is someone there? Just wond'ring how you are? Calling to Heaven How do you do? It's been too long by far. I know you're busy Don't mean to disturb But I'm at an end of my purpose in this world. Time to move on, now Please let me in. I know that I'll never see him again.
Back up in Heaven Singing all day Here in the boundless white. I love this music I love my work I don't think of him at night. Each hour praising Heart full to burst A countdown until the last hour on Earth. It won't be long now One childhood, and then I know that I'll never see him again.
We filled up all our pages Believing we could hide Believing we could hide forever. And held true down the ages Until the day arrived Until the day arrived We could no longer lie We could never be together.
Finally, something Hark at the news Come hear how the story ends. The world won't exist soon Devoured by our war Along with my one true friend. And won't it be lovely? Won't it be swell? And aren't I in hell? And I'll never tell how I'm Fleeing from Heaven Find him and then I'll risk it all if I see him See him See him again.
--------------------
It's Over, Isn't It? (set to It's Over, Isn't It?, from Steven Universe episode Mr Greg, written by Rebecca Sugar, performed by Deedee Magno Hall)
CROWLEY:
I was fine To pretend That our time down here on Earth Would never end. I was fine 'Cause I knew When the day arrived, I'd stay And stand with you. I was fine When we lied Knowing underneath, we two Were on our side. Not above Not below After all these years, I never thought you'd go.
It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over? It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over? You've gone And I've lost you And Earth's time is almost done. It's over, isn't it Why can't I move on?
Hell and Heaven War eternal Powers holy and infernal For your freedom My redemption We became our bold invention Who am I now in the world without you? My happiness all revolved about you Close to a love that I never deserved Now I'll wait for the end of the world.
It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over? It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over? You've gone And I've lost you And our time is up and done. It's over, isn't it Why can't I move on?
It's over, isn't it Why can't I move on?
-------------------------
Home (set to Found, from Steven Universe the movie, written by Rebecca Sugar, performed by Zach Callison and Sarah Stiles)
AZIRAPHALE:
Today, I swear, my love We’ll run away We just need to find somewhere And once we’re there, my love How bright the days Just us in our new somewhere. Out there, where they can’t hurt us Out there, where we’re all alone Some way, somehow, someday We’re going to come home.
CROWLEY:
Today, like all the days Was hard and cold And you could be found nowhere. It ends after today The Earth grows old And soon we will be nowhere. You are the one who hurt me You went and left me alone Too far, too bad, too late To tell me you’re home.
CROWLEY / AZIRAPHALE:
You are the one who hurt me / I never meant to hurt you You went, and I was alone / You are my someone, I know.
AZIRAPHALE:
My love -
CROWLEY:
You can’t, Don’t tell me -
BOTH:
- You are my home.
AZIRAPHALE:
Today, I swear, right now Together we’re home.

who else loves genderswapped shows? i especially love the 1994 jesus christ superstar, and @AmyRay is *amazing*. i hadn't watched it since #GoodOmens came out & JUST watched this https://youtube.com/watch?v=00vwUKIxdcU… but this time, i heard crowley asking why god wanted him to fall...
so i had to type it out. (my head canon is that why crowley fell is because god asked him to and he did it out of love for them) & now i desperately want to be the sort of rich that means i could hire a great singer who can also sing in david tennant's crowley voice....

Because somebody had to filk it:
hello mr. gaiman,
so there is this nursery rhyme that goes:
A frog he would a-wooing go, Heigh ho! says Rowley, A frog he would a-wooing go, Whether his mother would let him or no. With a rowley, powley, gammon, and spinach, Heigh ho! says Anthony Rowley.
especially the "heigh ho says anthony rowley" caught my attention as it sounds quite similar to “ 'Heigh ho,' said Anthony Crowley, and just drove anyway" line from the book . is there any chance that you were inspired by this song or is it just a wild coincidence?
It's where Crowley got his first name from.

Podfic Highlight Week
In honor of Voiceteam 2024 (which is happening right now), and for the Chip In challenge, the week from May 13th to May 19th will be Podfic Highlight Week. That means any and all podfics and other audio based fanworks can be submitted without having to provide proof that you commented on something else. All our other rules still apply.
All podfics that have already been submitted will be reblogged this week and listed on this post. Podfics that get submitted will be added to the list as well.
I also made an info post about podfic, with information and links about what they are, how you can find them, how to heighten you chances of someone turning your fic into a podfic and how to learn how to podfic yourself. I will post that hopefully tomorrow and update this post with a link. If you have suggestions what should be included in that post, please reach out.
If you have any questions regarding this highlight, podfics or Comment Exchange in general, I'm happy to answer them.
So far 9 Podfics, 1 fan playlist and 2 Filks (fan songs) have been submitted to Comment Exchange:
[Podfic] The Meaning of Family (Octopath Traveler) by @postalninja
[Podfic] Edge of Jealousy (Julie and the Phantoms) by @meggie-jolly
[Podfic] the strange idea of continuous living (Guardian) by @flamingwell
[Podfic] The Waltz (Good Omens) by @meggie-jolly

20 Questions for Fic Writers Tag Game
@beatrice-otter tagged me, thanks!
1. how many works do you have on AO3?
28, of which 11 are in German, 17 in English. Of the English fics, 2 are podfics and 1 is filk (for the lyrics someone else wrote). I should re-record that last one, I've become a much better singer since then.
2. what’s your total AO3 word count?
55,059 words
3. what fandoms do you write for?
Various, and rarely a lot in one fandom these days. Mass Effect and Rivers of London are my current go-to fandoms.
4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
What we're made of (Harry Potter: trans Viktor Krum at the Yule Ball with Hermione)
Sleepless Night (Good Omens: hurt/comfort double drabble about insomnia)
The Darkest Prison (Rogue One: pre-canon Baze/Chirrut fic about the early days of Imperial occupation and Baze's loss of faith in the Force)
Breathe, breathe in the air (Rivers of London: see my anwer to the smut question, Peter/Beverley and Peter/Old Beverley)
Bintumani (Rivers of London: Elsie Winstanley & Peter's mom have an adventure in Sierra Leone)
The first 3 are no surprise because they're all in rather big fandoms. The first one was for the "Trans Wizard Tournament" so it got lots of readers from there. The next two contain popular ships of their fandoms. The last two are a bit of a surprise, but they haven't that many kudos overall, just more than the others, and they are both from Yuletide and probably get some of their readers from there. The rest of what I write is either in niche fandoms or very niche within a bigger fandom or not in English.
5. do you respond to comments?
Yep, although I can take a while.
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Under the burning sun (Mass Effect: Kaidan and Shepard go back to Virmire to grieve Ashley)
A fic about two survivors of a mission grieving their colleague who died on said mission. One feels responsible because he made the decision who to leave behind, the other feels guilty because he was saved while his colleague was left to die. Doesn't get any angstier than that in my book.
7. what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Phew hard to say, perhaps it's "Spürst du die Funken" (see my answer to the translation question)
8. do you get hate on fics?
Never got any hate mail, but then I don't have much of an audience either so the chances are slim.
9. do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I started recently, as in, over the last 1.5 years or so. There's one unpublished and unfinished fic that was actually the first, which only consists of a series of sexual fantasies so far but will lead to inadvisable undernegociated kinky sex between two characters who suck at communication and have loads of emotional baggage between them. There's another one that I actually published, a ... kind of weird metaphysical sex scene in which two characters have sex in the real world but also one of them has sex with the other's metaphysical alter ego on another plane of existence.
10. do you write crossovers?
I have 1 crossover WIP that I haven't touched in a long time, Rivers of London x The Old Guard, re:immortality. I tend to be intimidated by them because doing the different sources materials justice within one work sounds more challenging than if it's just one on its own.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope, but there's a half finished translation into English of one of my German fics, a HP Dean/Seamus getting together story with gray-aromantic bi Dean and gay Seamus.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, with @shakespearerants, but it's not published yet.
Also, the vast majority of my writing output (easily 20-30k words a year, used to be as high as 50k) is for a forum-based, long-form text writing RPG, which may count as co-writing and may count as fic.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?
I once wrote a 70k Harry Potter fanfic in German, a schoolgirl romance between Minerva McGonagall and Pomona Sprout (with my own character backgrounds for them). It would need much editing to be in any way presentable - the text is missing the character arcs I intended to put in it, I decided to change one of the characters' age and school year halfway in, and the ending would need a lot more preparation to be satisfying. And while I'm proud to have written 70k words of fanfic, I cannot overstate how little interest I have in connecting with others over Harry Potter these days, and I wouldn't enjoy interacting with readers about it. So I'm never going to share it and it's never going to be anything else than a first draft.
Edit: I just noticed I read the question wrong (I was very tired yesterday), but I'll keep my answer that way because the point stands: I'd like to have finished it because more satisfying than having written a 70k fic would be having it polished and published, but for aforementioned reason that's not going to happen.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Writing distinct character voices, I think. At least in German.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Dialogue! It always takes a lot of editing work to make it lively.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Ohh, lots. Basically the question is "what are you trying to achieve"? Why would the character do it? If you write dialogue in another language, which of the characters understands it, and do you want your readers to understand it? If two characters switch languages, why not say "[...] she said in French"?
The one fic in which I put the most thought about how to convey language is probably "What we're made of", the trans Viktor Krum fic, which is written from his perspective, but I elected not to add a orthographic representation of his accent, because he wouldn't be aware of it. I did give him some grammatical errors that I thought native speakers of Bulgarian might make in English - but just in direct speech and not in his internal monologue (all errors are mine there) because I assume his internal monologue to be in Bulgarian.
I did use some cyrillic, namely I used the spelling of "Hermione" from the Bulgarian HP4, from the scene in which Hermione tells him how to pronounce her name, because he would think about the pronounciation by way of the cyrillic spelling.
Also there's this sentence: "She pronounced his name ‘Victor’, as if it was English. A short i, the o as a short a, almost like ъ, and the r in that strange way English people pronounced their r, with bared front teeth." (ъ being the Bulgarian cyrillic letter for a schwa sound)
I haven't had any good opportunities to actually write dialogue in another language. One reason would be if the character was code switching, but then I'd want to be sure (in most cases) that readers who don't speak the language could still follow, so I probably wouldn't put the whole dialogue in another language, just a phrase or two, and have another character react to that. It could be fun as an easter egg for readers who speak both.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
The first story for which I tried writing a continuation was some horse book set in Cornwall with Endurance riding.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Always the one I finished last? I don't know. I'm always proud that they're finished, and they all scratch an itch.
I'm tagging @freizusein, @astronicht, @hermitknut, @weatheredlaw, @shakespearerants, @evolutionsbedingt, @perching-owl

You want a filk, right? Because I read this post and one immediately sprang fully formed into my head. Sung to the tune of "The Rattling Bog".
AZIRAPHALE'S ROOM
CHORUS: Oh, ro, Aziraphale's room, the room back in his bookshop, oh Oh, ro, Aziraphale's room, the room back in his bookshop, oh!
And in that room there was a screen, a rare screen, a carven screen
Screen in the room and the room back in the bookshop, oh
(CHORUS)
And on that screen there was a tree, a rare tree, an almond tree
Tree on the screen and the screen in the room and the room back in the book shop oh
(CHORUS)
And on that tree there were some shoots, some rare shoots, some seven shoots
Shoots on the tree and the tree on the screen and the screen in the room and the room back in the bookshop oh!
(CHORUS)
And on those shoots there were some leaves, some rare leaves, some seven leaves!, Leaves on the shoots and the shoots on the tree and the tree on the screen and the screen in the room and the room back in the bookshop oh!
(CHORUS)
And 'mongst those leaves there were some almonds, some almonds to spy on you oh, almonds 'mongst the leaves and the leaves on the shoots and the shoots on the tree and the tree on the screen and the screen in the room and the room back in the bookshop oh!
Oh ro, Aziraphale's room, the room back in the bookshop oh! Oh ro, Aziraphale's room, the room back in the bookshop oh! Oh ro, Aziraphale's room, the room baaack in the bookshoppp ohhh -- Oh ro, Aziraphale's room the room back in the bookshop oh!
Suspiciously eyeing leafed plant on that screen in Aziraphale’s back room. Specifically the fact it has 7 off-shoots, each of which has 7 leaves. And those leaves look suspiciously like the leaves of an almond tree.
Too many years of sunday school ingrained too deep. My brain went to this:
And we know from the angels that God likes sevens. And also that the Metatron comes bearing almonds.
🎵 I always feel like somebody’s waaaaatching me 🎵

Tag game for fanfiction authors!
Thank you for tagging me @the-blue-eyed-firebender !
Tell us:
The story you're proudest of: what will you leave behind? [for the fact that I wrote 71k when usually I stay under 10k, and for how personal it is]
Your story that's gotten the most love online: the men who hold high places must be the ones who start [accidentally hit the ATLA renaissance at the right moment with the dad!Zuko feels]
Tease a current WIP or idea you're working on: I have been working on a "5 times Jean realized that Hawkeye was just as country as he is" fic since September 24, 2022. I remember the exact date because it was the Vols v. Gator game and I had finally figured out how to turn a half-baked filk idea into a proper fic. I finished the first time pretty soon after...and have not finished a single other time 😭 I have one time almost finished, but the ending just doesn't work, and another time that I know how it will end, but I can't figure out the beginning at all. The other day, another idea came to me, and I tried to start writing it, but I got stuck. When this fic finally comes into existence, it is going to be so ridiculously niche lmao.
Your top 3 fandoms: Avatar, Fullmetal Alchemist, Good Omens
Your top 3 ships: Riza Hawkeye/Roy Mustang, Sokka/Suki, Aziraphale/Crowley
Rec someone else's fic: Idle Lips are the Devil's Mouthpiece by @bookgirlfan [I recently read this for the first time and ADORED it—such an excellent use of outside POV for Aziraphale/Crowley!]
Pick one!
Fluff or Angst
Oneshots or longfics
Canon compliance or canon divergence
AO3 or FF.net
Tagging @kindalikerackham @cyborgartalchemist2 @theaceofdragons if y'all want to play!

My hot take is that the book is not frequently better than the movie. Literature is not an inherently better, worthier, or affective medium.
Most commonly, books, films, stage plays, radio plays graphic narratives, filk, parodies, and retellings sit in conversation with one another, engaged in a shared process of storytelling, each with their own focus and perspective. Most commonly, adaptations are desired because they invoke new ways of interacting with and new experiences of favoured stories.
The reason I believe the refrain "the book is better than the movie" holds cliche and weight, is because it is most often invoked by fans of popular titles reacting to:
1) adaptations that neglect to the point of desecration the intents, characterization, and heart of the original (of which the original is most commonly the book)
2) adaptations that are too faithful to the original, not allowing space for a medium translation and thereby creating a deficit where one style cannot perfectly recreate another
3) Corporate and capitalistically motivated projects which seem to exist solely to capitalize on buzz, rather than a genuine desire to enter conversation.
Because the fact is, when you remove these outliers, plenty of adaptations are well received despite and because of any departures from source material (Lord of the Rings, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Good Omens, Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice, Stardust, Howl's Moving Castle, Practical Magic, Cloud Atlas, Fight Club, The Martian, etc.) and plenty of these adaptations in fact eclipse their originals (Jurrassic Park, Jaws, Forrest Gump, The Godfather, The Wizard of Oz, The Devil Wears Prada, The Exorcist, Carol, etc.)
Pitting the book and the movie against one another is unnecessary when we can have both! Because really, I want to inject my favourite stories into my experience by as many modes as possible! I just want my media to be created with care and devotion.
But when we parrot that the book is always better than the film, we stop talking about storytelling and start engaging in a valuation of medium. So let me be clear: the book/print is not an inherently more valuable medium. Original does not inherently mean better. The original book just has the occasional advantage of being the version granted the greatest devotion.

On My Own [Crowley]
Written for @do-it-with-style-events "Who Needs a Great Plan" event, Day 2, prompt "Bastille!"
We had the prompt on the days June 5-6, which just HAPPENS to be the (checks watch) 189th anniversary of the June Rebellion, the one featured in Les Mis (not to be confused with...any of the other revolutions/rebellions/uprisings of 19th century France).
Anyway, I considered that close enough to the prompt, behold, a filk! (If you haven't heard "On My Own" as sung by Lea Salonga, do yourself a favor and Google that, it's amazing.)
--
And now I’m all alone again Nowhere to turn, no-one to go to An empty flat, an absent friend, Thought he trusted me. He said no to A reasonable request. He always thinks that he knows best.
For weeks and months I lie in bed And he is with me when I’m sleeping. Until I wake up, I am happy With the company I’m keeping. And when I go to bed I can be with him in my head.
On my own, pretending he’s beside me All alone, I walk with him till morning Without him, I feel his warmth surround me And when I dream I Fall, this time he’s there, his arms around me. In the rain, his wing shields me with silver, Heaven, Hell, we stand ‘gainst them together, In the darkness, we walk among the starlight And all I see is him and me forever and forever
And I know that he is such a bastard, That he walked away from what I asked him. And although he has to have the last word Still I say there’s a way for us.
I love him, but when the dream has ended He is gone, I’m here without my one friend. Without him, nothing lifts the sorrow It’s only me and Hell I’ll see Through every last tomorrow.
I love him, but slowly I am learning Six thousand years, I’ve only been pretending. Without me, his world will go on turning A world that’s full of happiness that I have never known.
I love him, I love him, I love him, but only on my own.
--

Oop - I wrote another filk. :o
This is an ineffable husbands version of ‘Found’ from the Steven Universe movie soundtrack.
This time I had to wrestle with multi-track. Music programmes are a mystery to me; until now I just pushed a button marked ‘rec’ and hoped for the best. Here’s hoping the boys (both played by me) sound like they’re singing their parts in the same room.
This is my third effort (heh) for my GO/SU crossover bonanza, Omens Universe. It occurs shortly after the last musical number, an Aziraphale version of Drift Away. It falls in Chapter 11.
Lyrics under the cut:
Aziraphale:
Today, I swear, my love
We’ll run away
We just need to find somewhere
And once we’re there, my love
How bright the days
Just us in our new somewhere.
Out there, where they can’t hurt us
Out there, where we’re all alone.
Some way, somehow, someday,
We’re going to come home.
Crowley:
Today, like all the days
Was hard and cold
And you could be found nowhere.
It ends after today
The Earth grows old,
And soon we will be nowhere.
You are the one who hurt me.
You went and left me alone.
Too far, too bad, too late
To tell me you’re home.
Crowley/Aziraphale:
You are the one who hurt me/I never meant to hurt you
You went, and I was alone/You are my someone, I know.
Aziraphale:
My love -
Crowley:
You can’t,
Don’t tell me
Both:
You are my home.
Aziraphale:
Today, I swear, right now,
Together we’re home.

You know, I took a glance at the lyrics to this song, with an eye to actually filking it... and other than changing "little man" to "little demon" they're freakin' PERFECT already.
Somebody who can edit video way better than I can could make one hell of an Aziraphale fanvid out of this.
I Can Make A Difference
My thoughts on the theme for Day 2 of the Nice and Accurate Prophecies event!
See my meta here about Aziraphale's elevator grin and why I completely believe he has a Plan (always with the capital letter).
If I'm being honest, I don't know what I believe his Plan is. But, what I do want to talk about is his character and what I think he's going to bring to Heaven.
I firmly believe that the Metatron only cared about separating Crowley and Aziraphale because he was scared of their combined power.
I mean, these two already stopped Armageddon once when they teamed up. Now they are performing 25 Lazari miracles when miracles are usually measured in centilazari or millilazari. Neil even says it's mostly millilazari, which is 1/1000 of a single lazari. Their combined power is insane and they weren't even trying. So, of course they must be separated.
And the easiest way to do this? Take the easily manipulated one and bring him back to Heaven, of course. Who cares that he's in a position of power? All it takes to get him to agree to anything you want is a little bit of mirrored speech patterns, support for his favorite activity of ingesting human substances, and some flattery. He couldn't be more easily controlled, right? RIGHT?
But, what the Metatron didn't know, couldn't possibly have known, is that Aziraphale is the angel with an overdeveloped sense of right and wrong and the backbone to stand up for it at all costs.
And he's not going to be as easy to get rid of as Gabriel was, because the problem (for the Metatron) with Aziraphale is that he's not going to tell Heaven, "No," And make it easy for them to fire him. That's what Gabriel did, and it was immediate demotion. But Aziraphale? He's going to talk about it, he's going to ask questions about it, or even flat out lie about it, and he's going to make them doubt their own plans. Probably not the Metatron, but all the other angels? Absolutely.
Want to know how I know?
He's been standing up to people, lying, and convincing them to do things he wants them to for literal millennia.
The Heaven v. Hell fight could've just continued right along, but in comes Aziraphale, asking questions about if it's the Great Plan or the Ineffable Plan, and suddenly no one knows for sure and the whole thing falls apart.
He convinces Crowley with little more than a look to make Hamlet a success.
He stands up to the archangels in the Job minisode, and when that doesn't work, he fakes it with his bestie, and outright lies to seal the deal.
He's going up to Heaven and he's going to make those idiots do the right thing regardless of how they feel about it, and he's going to do it in a way that makes them think it was their idea in the first place.
The Metatron may be a master manipulator, but two can play that game. And my money is on Aziraphale.
