i may have fallen victim to the curse of the Bad Aziraphale Take with this post, so i'd like to right my wrongs:
Tumblr media
i still agree with this, however i would like to add some insight: the metatron is definitely orchestrating their falling out. he knows exactly what he's doing & he knows that he can't control aziraphale as long as he has crowley on their side--that's emotional abuse 101. the victim is isolated from their real support systems, and the only place they have left to turn is their abuser. i believe that aziraphale knows what he's doing, and that he's just going along with heaven as far as he can in order to protect his demon, but from the metatron's perspective things have to look like they're going according to plan.
Tumblr media
i think... maybe this is only half true? not sure what i was thinking when i wrote this; it was late. whatever.
crowley is an optimist, but he clearly had his doubts about how aziraphale would respond, which is indeed based in reality. aziraphale doesn't have a great track record as far as assuming the best of him in the moment (which, i must add, isn't his fault. it is one of his flaws, however). i think the important thing is that he trusts aziraphale to do the right thing in the end.
Tumblr media
i still agree with this. however, i want to acknowledge that i felt this was unfair at the time, but in retrospect i was ignoring aziraphale's dependency on external validation that crowley does not have. crowley is far more independent than aziraphale, and i acknowledged this, but i framed it originally as "crowley has an unfulfilled need," rather than what i now think it really is, which is that AZI has an unfulfilled need.
Tumblr media
yeah, there it is. different people, different needs.
as far as it being strange that aziraphale didn't pick up on what crowley needed in that moment right away, i do still feel that way--sort of. i honestly at this point just want to pin it down to him being excited.
whatever you have to say can wait--we have all of eternity to say whatever we want, in complete security. we won't have to hide. we can be together. and he wants so badly to be together. that's literally all he wants. he wasn't even a little interested in returning to heaven until the metatron told him that crowley could tag along. this is manipulation 101, people! the metatron knows, or at least can intuit, that crowley wouldn't want to become an angel again. he knows exactly what he's doing to them. this is not a good faith offer.
most of the rest of that post is me rambling about my interpretation of aziraphale's actions and the reasoning behind them. feel free to read the full take if you'd like, but i don't believe it's necessary to break down the whole thing. it mostly boils down to aziraphale needs to see people as people before he can respond properly to their needs. i may or may not still agree with that, i'm on the fence, but if that is the case, it's 100% because heaven has conditioned him to be that way. you need to earn salvation, you need to earn love, you need to earn humanity.
i originally used job as a counter example, but he may actually be a paragon of this interpretation. if anyone deserves salvation, it was job--righteous job, level-headed job, job who lost everything but never, ever lost faith in the Almighty. if anyone has earned aziraphale's sympathy, it's him.
Tumblr media
this is just a wonky take. he does care, or else he wouldn't be making the offer. interrupting crowley might have been selfish in the short-term, but to aziraphale, the long-term result is eternity together unhindered. they will have all the time in the world to be an us if they can only get out from under the watchful, dangerous, probing eye of heaven.
Tumblr media
i think i was getting close to the point here, but i was still framing it from the perspective that aziraphale had woefully wronged crowley, and that he's not also a victim of the system here. i was in far less certain terms falling into the "aziraphale is naive" trap, when in reality he just wanted to be safe. as archangel, he can do as he pleases without fear of retribution. he has never, ever felt safe before--not safe to ask questions, not safe to be seen with crowley, not safe to run off to alpha centauri with him. blaming him for prioritizing crowley's safety is more than a little silly.
Tumblr media
this is just... the ick. it feels like a whole other person wrote this. i am trying so hard to give myself grace for this absolutely rot-gut take.
yikes. yikes yikes yikes. i'm not sure anymore if crowley has ever expressed a pointed distaste for being an angel again; that may just be misguided on my part. somehow i'm victim-blaming both of them here, while also completely misrepresenting aziraphale's intentions. i'm falling into the "he doesn't love crowley enough/the way he deserves" trap, painting him once again as naive, blind, and selfish. oopsie daisy.
Tumblr media
i still believe the kiss was an offer akin to the ox rib, extremely alcoholic breakfasts, what have you. it's possible crowley doesn't feel seen--i might even go so far as to say that that's likely--but not in the way i stated originally. he's heartbroken. he's devastated. he might even feel betrayed. but just because he feels that way doesn't make it the truth, and i think a mistake i've made throughout this particular text is mistaking how aziraphale's actions look from the outside for his actual intentions.
Tumblr media
i think this was mostly right up until the part about azi being selfish. he's far from selfish, he's not even close to naive. assuming he made a mistake in the f15 at all, he absolutely knows it now. he will do anything it takes to be with crowley.
Tumblr media
at the time of this addendum i think he's made a Plan™ and is trying to convince himself he's made the right choice. all will make sense in the end. or maybe it won't. we'll figure it out--some things take time, and we don't have all the information.
i do believe that about covers it. in summary, they are both victims and treating either of them like they're naive or stupid for making the choices they did is unfair because they're both doing the best they can with the information they have available to them. it's heartbreaking, gut-wrenching, and really, really unfortunate. but it's neither of their fault. it's literally all the metatron. if heaven and hell were out of the picture, crowley would've been free to confess and aziraphale free to reciprocate--but that's just not their reality. everything aziraphale does is in order to keep crowley safe, in the interest of us long-term. crowley knows he has a hard time expressing himself, and so he wants to get it out fast, and that's valid; aziraphale having reservations due to safety concerns is just as valid.
it's neither of their fault.

finally a good fucking take on the f15. a breath of fresh air. i know most people are normal about it but there's a loud minority of people who seem to have watched a completely different show from the rest of us.
guys the kiss was so important especially from a narrative and storytelling perspective because it was literally Crowley taking everything that's happened between them, every unsaid intention and every unspoken promise, and making it physical.
He's taking their arrangement and every other bullshit excuse they've ever used to hide how they feel about each other and throwing them out the window to put their feelings into an undeniable physical action that holds a lot of meaning to humans in order to be absolutely sure that Aziraphale knows exactly what he means when he says "we could have been Us." He wants to be absolutely sure that there are no misunderstandings between them and know that Azirphale will be committing to this decision with absolute reassurance that he's been understood and rejected anyway.
he's taking a human action with so much meaning and so much importance, and he's using it as a way to desperately make Aziraphale completely and undeniably aware of what he's stating. No more charades and no more lies or cover-ups. There's no denying this thing between them now, and Crowley did it the human way. Because he and Aziraphale love humanity and it's everything to them in their own ways.
There's a reason we saw a kiss between Crowley and Aziraphale, and not Gabriel and Beelzebub, despite them both being undeniable foils.
and really if you just think about that isn't it so god damned beautiful?

I have to go
Tumblr media
So I was thinking this weekend about Good Omens (surprise surprise). And why I relate so much more to Aziraphale than to Crowley even if on paper, I'd have sworn Crowley is a lot more relatable.
And then I had a nightmare about my family and something clicked. Now look, my family is not awful. I mean not so awful anymore. My bully of a grandma died when I was 19 (20?) and my youngest brother was 9 and my alcoholic, often violent father left us and was never found until police came to confirm the body in a mortuary was his 6 years later. The rest of my family is a bit religious, a bit homophobic, full of body-shamers but nothing you would be particularly surprised by.
But anyway, I left them. I cannot vouch for how conscious a decision it was, back when I was fresh out of high school and announced I will go abroad for 6 months or a year (reader, it's been quite a bit longer than that). But I left.
And yep, I am made to feel guilty (and I do feel a bit guilty sometimes) about it when I visit once a year and I am asked to stay and consider my values and goals in life etc. SO ANYWAY
I guess I just feel like I relate to Aziraphale who was always aware that he was different, that he saw things differently, that he knew what was happening was not right and had no power to change it.
And he got the opportunity to leave and he did. Overtime, in many more ways than one.
And yet, when F15 happened, he was the one again who had to leave, to make a decision, to do something; a very hard decision but he had to go. And not to a place he loved. Rather quite the opposite. Somewhere he despised but had to choose over something worse (perhaps a specific threat, perhaps simply more uncertainty). Something that would hurt the only being he truly loves.
Angel!Crowley is an innocent with a lot questions when we see him in Before the Beginning. We don't know what happened during his Fall, we don't know how much he has changed by then, but we know he is changed now.
He was cast out, thrown out by the people who were supposed to love him, who were supposed to forgive. And they did not.
And I understand how many people relate to that. Coming out for who you are and being told you are wrong, bad, that you have to go go... and being thrown out.
And then the being you desperately love has to go too.
I think Crowley understands though. But I also understand how it hurts him.
And above all, I think Aziraphale is incredibly brave for making the decision to return and try to make a difference. Even if the difference was to be to make one more lonely angel like Muriel smile with his stories, I think he would have tried. But he will achieve a LOT more. And Crowley (and their love) will be indispensable to him when he does.

ive always interpreted it as the bookshop wouldn't last forever, their safety was never meant to last forever, the building the shop was in was never going to last.
if their little pocket of comfort (the bookshop, freedom from heaven and hell) wouldn't have lasted anyway, they would have to rebuild their safety anyway. Heaven and hell weren't done with earth, and they'd be roped into it all at some point alongside all of humanity. if they go to heaven now, cut off the plans at the start, they can ensure that when they rebuild, they'd be really safe and really, truly free.
to me, crowley saying "you can't leave this bookshop" means "you can't leave this little niche of safety we've built yet," and aziraphale's "nothing lasts forever" means "this safety wouldn't last anyway, lets fix things so we can be safe soon"
of course neither of them can simply *say* anything, and unfortunately, none of us can be inside their minds at the moment, so all of this is very open to interpretation for now.
honestly, I really love this new idea in combination with my own theories-- the safety won't last, but neither will the danger.
Wait! WAIT! Wait a god damn fucking second!
Was “Oh Crowley, nothing lasts forever” actually about being in Heaven?!
Crowley says to him “You can’t leave this bookshop” and then Aziraphale responds “Oh Crowley, nothing lasts forever.”
Was what he saying actually “If you think we’re leaving here forever for Heaven, then please know it’s only temporary, we’re only going to Heaven to fix things, then we can come back here.”
Is that why he gives that confused look with that sad little smile when Crowley covers his eyes. Because he doesn’t understand why Crowley hasn’t understood his meaning?!
DID I FIGURE IT OUT?!

hello! I hope you are having a marvelous morning. afternoon, or night, wherever you are at whatever time you happen to see this.
"drinking buddies and diaries" was the first fic I ever read, before I had tumblr or an ao3 account. since then I've read it at least a dozen more times, most recently finished a few moments ago. ao3 has now reported that I've opened it over 250 times, so that says something! when introducing some of my dearest friends to good omens and ao3 in general, this is what I tell them to start with, and everyone has had very similar reactions to myself.
this fic is so marvelous from start to finish, and its undoubtedly one of my favorites I've ever read. muriel is positively adorable, and im a sucker for jealous aziraphale and a crowley who wants both distance and to be as close as possible after the f15. everything about this story has me squealing, and a few scenes where I was on the verge of tears at how cute it was. even the more suspenseful scenes were so beautifully emotional and the entire thing amazingly written. im going to undoubtedly read it many more times, and share it with as many people as I can.
thank you for putting your writing into the world and giving an overworked teen something to look forward to reading at the end of the day! xx
!!!!
I can’t lie to you; I’ve spent the morning wriggling and crawling through a back injury and a justified but still crap attitude.
This message really could not have been sweeter or more appreciated. It means so much to me that people read Drinking Buddies at all, let alone reread it, and then to those who go out of their way to reach on here? Angels. You are an angel (in a Muriel way, not a Michael way, of course).
Thank you for your support and for clearing away my grouchiness with your kindness this morning. ❤️ and for sharing my fic! Truth be told, if I think too much about that, it chokes me up a little bit. I’m very grateful to you.
Ps. It’s easy for me to say “don’t overwork yourself” without knowing what’s going on in your world, so I won’t say that. I’ll just say your rest and relaxation is precious and I hope you never forget how much you deserve it in heaps.

This is very well put together.
There is a thing about saying No three times to deny it properly. Adam had to do it to defeat Satan in S1. Or doing things in threes - such as Shax had to make three attempts to get into the Bentley and only succeeded on the third try - there are other examples. In the F15 Crowley asks twice "Tell me you said no!" (which actually pairs back up with their argument in Ep1)
But the thing is to me, Aziraphale did deny the Metatron three times - he said in the bookshop when he was handed the coffee "I think I've made my position perfectly clear." Then there are the two examples above, "I don't want to go back to Heaven," and "I...I don't know what to say." Three hesitations, at least. But because of the editing, you don't notice so much. Food for thought.
Something we didn't notice (part 2)
part 1
Overall, the meta is based on close observation of Aziraphale (for the most part) and Crowley. Without speculation or trying to guess what we haven't been shown (well, almost).
Tumblr media
The Metatron makes it clear that he is watching Aziraphale delivering the "good news". Aziraphale looks back at him.
Tumblr media
The first thing I'd like to explain. The Metatron is talking to Muriel, and then he stares at the window of the bookshop duplicating that gaze toward Crowley. The frame changes and we see Aziraphale looking out the same window, just for a second, but he will do it repeatedly.
Tumblr media
As Crowley starts his monologue, Aziraphale tries to stop him by gesturing for him not to say too much, while looking out the window himself. Aziraphale continues to turn to the window with every meaningful attempt to speak.
Tumblr media
Let's also note that Aziraphale doesn't usually behave in a similar way in conversations with Crowley. Yes, Aziraphale is characterised by active gesticulation, but the constant pauses, averting his eyes from the interlocutor, nervous and jerky movements - these are messengers that angel is holding something back, hiding or simply doesn't want to tell. Most often we see this Aziraphale in conversations with the leadership - God and Archangels.
https://commonmexicanname.tumblr.com/post/734305363759890432/good-omens-thoughts
Here's a prime example, comparing his interaction with Archangels when he's caught off guard and frantically trying to figure out how to get out of the situation.
I don't think Aziraphale is just lying to Crowley here, no. He just has an audience beyond Crowley. He tries to tell everything, knowing he has more than one viewer.
Tumblr media
When Aziraphale mentions the Metatron, he is not just hinting, he points his index fingers - one at the window, another at Heaven, and then in a distinctly active quick motion once more at the WINDOW.
Tumblr media
And again - turns his face to the window at the words about Gabriel failing, and then tilts his head towards the transparent panes of the bookshop.
Tumblr media
The conversation with the Metatron is important, among other things, to assess Aziraphale's behaviour when Crowley is mentioned by his superiors. At the words about their partnership Aziraphale looks frightened: his facial muscles are tense, his forehead and eyebrows are furrowed, and there is a terror in his eyes.
When the God's spokesman concludes his really suspicious speech, Aziraphale swallows nervously and averts his eyes. He certainly doesn't look like someone who's been offered the fulfilment of his cherished dream. And not like someone who believes it.
Aziraphale looks like someone who has just found out what an enormous amount of incriminating information is in his opponent's possession.
Tumblr media
"Tell me you said no. Tell me you said NO." Crowley is definitely shocked and horrified, he thinks the best of his angel. He can't believe what's going on (and he isn't supposed to).
Aziraphale turns his head towards the window again as an answer.
He actually said:
Tumblr media
And
Tumblr media
We see him right before he walks into the bookshop, he never says yes to the Metatron.
Tumblr media
Aziraphale utters his most delusional words while looking out the window. Of course, they're not meant for Crowley. Aziraphale hasn't believed it for a long time, Crowley even more so.
Tumblr media
And then Crowley says "Oh, God", without correcting himself afterwards, because this demon can only hope in God here.
Tumblr media
For a second Aziraphale has a look of hope on his face that Crowley has realised what he's getting at. Then Aziraphale realises that Crowley is trying to confess. He's waited for so long not to realise. He was about to confess too.
Aziraphale already knows everything Crowley is about to tell him, but more importantly, literally everyone already knows it. It's impossible to stay and start pretending again that there's nothing between them.
Tumblr media
Aziraphale has a completely blank stare past Crowley, and then he looks out the window. Again.
Tumblr media
And then the most interesting thing happens. Crowley starts his line "And I would like to spend…" But he turns his head and finally looks out the window, where Aziraphale has been pointing so hard since the beginning of their conversation.
Maybe that's the reason Crowley doesn't complete the sentence. And he begins to pick up different words. Maybe not, maybe the sun from the outside is preventing him from seeing the Metatron.
Tumblr media
In the final part of their conversation, when they move closer to the bookshop's door, Aziraphale looks towards the window again.
After "no nightingales" line he turns away to hide his feelings and pain.
Tumblr media
The cherry on the cake is the kiss, Aziraphale is falling into the abyss. He averts his eyes trying to figure out if the Metatron could have seen what just happened.
