Blurring the Edges
The familiar 1941, post-magic-show conversation:
Nah. That's the trouble with you lot. You don't just see things in black and white. Sometimes, you've just gotta blur the edges.
Tumblr media
They've blurred the edges, here at the end of the credits. So now we just have to try and guess why.

The last thing that happens in the last end titles is that Aziraphale smiles.
But that's not his happy smile, is it, I realise on the third watch.
Has he figured out a way to make heaven pay and bring all this down?
Has he given up since Crowley left, and goes mean? (<-I threw this one in to make you laugh😞)
Has he figured out it's going to end badly and he's going to do what he can to make it end worse for the bad? (While better for the good of the bad etc)
Did they bodyswitch again? Which makes me think, is that his smile ... or Crowley's ... or someone else's? Is that perhaps Gabriel's smile? Did the four of them switch and A&C went of to the Sussex cottage while G&B stayed on to wreak mischief and Nah? If they don't get renewed, that's my new official headcanon 😇😎

what made the Good Omens end credits so disturbing?
surely im not the only one.
but the end credits of Good Omens s2 ep6 disturbed me so much.
specifically right before the images of Azira and Crowley started to blur into little hexagonal swirls.
"what was it that disturbed me so much?" I hear you ask.
This:
Tumblr media
that smile.
it's so uncanny, so unsettling so so wrong, on so many levels.
let me remind you that Michael Sheen has played literal serial killers in the past. this is not the happy little smile we usually see Aziraphale with, the smile when he asked Crowley to dance, the smile when he found out Crowley hadn't killed Job's goats.
this is not that smile
this smile is insane.
Everything about the last 15 minutes of Good Omens was so disturbing to me, it didn't feel like a comedic fantasy anymore, it felt almost like a horror film.
but this.
this was the icing on the cake, the bow in the ribbon, the cherry on top.
Neil Gaiman is insanely good at his job, he really never leaves any detail unchecked.

Anyone ask for a needlessly long and emotional dissection of when and how Crowley and Aziraphale fell in love? No? Too bad.
I'm going to start with something controversial.
Aziraphale fell in love first.
To explain this, we gotta get a few things out of the way first.
FALLING in love and KNOWING you're in love are very different things. And the whole concept of LOVING someone and BEING IN LOVE are also different things.
Aziraphale LOVES Crowley from, well from before the Beginning. Because they are both angels and angels love. I would even accept the argument that Aziraphale LOVES Crowley throughout their flashback scenes before the Arrangement (because again, he is an angel).
Tumblr media
The Arrangement is born out of a symbiotic want of Crowley and Aziraphale to fuck around and not do their jobs enjoy humanity.
It is my personal belief that Aziraphale FELL in love with Crowley in 1941 when he saves the books (not a hot take, I know).
Tumblr media
He REALIZES he is in love with Crowley when he gets the Holy Water for him and the closest we get to that is this scene.
Tumblr media
Aziraphale thinks that Crowley wants to use the Holy Water as some kind of last-ditch attempt to get out of trouble. He knows it will kill him, and is incredibly dangerous in general. But he does it anyway. Why? Because he knows Crowley would find a way to get it regardless (most likely some dangerous plan that will result in death or grave injury). At least this way Aziraphale can feel somewhat at peace with the knowledge that Crowley no longer needs to do something reckless to get what he wants. He overtly goes against Heaven in this act, and this is one of only a few times we see him do this to such a degree (see Job).
It is my personal belief, and I'm sorry to be this person, but I don't think that Crowley was IN LOVE with Aziraphale in this scene or in any before it (def well on his way, but we'll get there).
I think that Crowley was still hopelessly intrigued by this angel who did fantastical things, like drink and eat and immerse himself in the aspects of humanity he adored.
And another controversial take I have is that the "you go too fast for me" is not Aziraphale saying he recognizes Crowley's feelings and his own and that Crowley is too fast for him in that respect. Because again, I don't think Crowley is IN LOVE with Aziraphale here.
I think Aziraphale is saying you go too fast for me, you treat life like a speedrun to get to the good parts. Hell, Crowley slept through the 19th century because he wanted time to move forward. Aziraphale recognizes this. He's in love with this demon who won't slow down and appreciate the mundane, human things that Aziraphale treasures. He goes too fast. He never settles down.
(I could do a whole analysis on this scene, but we'd be here till GO Season 3 came out)
I also could accept the argument that Azi realizes he is in love in this scene here when he hesitates before saying friends (Michael Sheen I'm in your walls what the hell was this shit).
Tumblr media
Because it does make sense that this is the first time we really see Aziraphale say what they are. But he hesitates so much. Keep in mind this happens AFTER the whole book saving incident. Does he hesitate because holy shit the person I like just did something really sweet and I see them in a new light? Possibly. I still think that Aziraphale deciding to give Crowley the Holy Water was his declaration. But I could be swayed.
Crowley is different in this respect. Contrary to popular belief, I think Crowley falls in love with Aziraphale slowly. So slowly that he doesn't even recognize it as being IN LOVE until it's pointed out by Nina.
Because he falls in love slowly, it's hard to pinpoint an exact scene where he is FALLING IN LOVE. I think throughout the first season (and before when the two are meeting up semi-regularly), when he and Aziraphale are trying to co-parent Warlock and the subsequent hunt for the real antichrist is the clearest I can get to him being IN LOVE.
Tumblr media
(Putting this gif in because holy shit, I mean, fuck, bro)
Let me explain.
Until this point (the handful of years prior to and during S1), he and Aziraphale were ships passing in the night. Crowley liked the mystery, the excitement of seeing the angel every so often. Got joy out of teasing him. But this is when Aziraphale becomes more than that. He becomes more of a constant in Crowley's life. And ever since his Fall Crowley has craved stability. A safe place to land. He changes his hair, his clothes, his accent. But Aziraphale doesn't. He just... is. He is constant, mostly unchanging, and still endlessly intriguing.
Crowley is IN LOVE with Aziraphale when he realizes that Aziraphale isn't going anywhere (yet). Crowley can rely on him. And for Crowley, that's something he's never had before.
Crowley LOVES Aziraphale. And he is IN LOVE with Aziraphale, but I genuinely don't think he recognizes it until he could lose him. (He's always been a bit dramatic; it would follow that his realizations only occur under dire circumstances).
Here, when he feels he is losing Aziraphale, Crowley does the one thing he never has before: says what he's feeling. Granted, it's sandwiched by a sassy one-liner and being shit at communication. But it's there.
Tumblr media
And I think that he thinks, it's a fluke. One moment of weakness.
But then it happens again. When he's losing Aziraphale. And he can't say anymore. He's done his speech, he's thrown out the nightingales. There's nothing for it.
Tumblr media
He KNOWS he is IN LOVE with Aziraphale when he's losing him.

Well it has been a over a month, but I wasn't on tumblr then, so here we go.
My first "fan art" for good omens if you want to put it like this and the thing that pushed me over the edge into this rabbit hole really. At the end of last year @sendaryas "Good Omens Got True Talents" event inspired me to write (and actually finish) a little song; a sad little thought experiment what our dear demon might be feeling & thinking after his angel left for heaven.
(song written and performed by me; illustration in the video made with watercolors also by me)

Good Omens S2 thought! *SPOILERS*
WARNING SPOILERS BELOW
So, that ending huh? I never normally make posts, as I'm normally the lurking reposter, HOWEVER....I have thoughts.
Although most of you out there are probably cursing Neil out, I actually think he is so SO smart for playing season 2 out like this. He wrote as any good author does. When you think of good trilogies out there, what format do they commonly follow?
The first of the three introduces us to the world and characters and basic conflicts. It almost always ends with the characters accomplishing some sort of victory, and closes the first part off with a sort of 'bow'. It could end here, in truth, but there is still unanswered questions.....
The second part often amps everything up very fast and sets us up for the end, while also ending on a cliffhanger/shock. Everything they built for themselves by 'winning', shows that they never actual did. The characters ultimately 'lose" and are at their lowest point in the series during the ending of this section.
The third however, is when things conclude while also slowing building the characters back up to finally win against what defeated them in the previous part. They might endure great loss, and failure during this part, but it always will end with the main characters getting the ending they deserve (most of the time good).
All great trilogies follow this mindset. The Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Back to the Future, etc. I mean, Spider-verse is following this format to a T. Neil isn't trying to gaslight us or whatever else people are saying about the ending. He is just carefully crafting possibly one of the best TV show trilogies and romances I have ever seen, and possible will ever see. And for so many other reasons other than this, my hat is off to you Neil. I see you, I see what you are doing. And oh boy, am I excited for Season 3.

There's no way aziraphale didn't love crowley like crowley loved him.
I've seen a few posts talk about it, and while that makes sense (a little) we spend the entire 2 seasons seeing the way aziraphale looks at crowley whenever he isn't looking. And crowley is a demon at that time. Aziraphale doesnt know if he can go back to heaven, or even that crowley can go back.
Yet he still looks at him with love in his eyes. He fights for him, fights with him.
My opinion is that what nina said was right. Aziraphale still believed in good, that he can still fix the world, because he's still a naive angel while crowley is not. He's seen the bad sides of both floors, and wants aziraphale to see it too. But he doesn't.
And when metatron offers a place in heaven for both him AND crowley, aziraphale thinks that is their happily ever after.
The kiss was so heartbreaking because it's crowley's last attempt to make aziraphale see the truth, while it was a last goodbye for him.
Aziraphale forcibly smiles his way through the reveal of armageddon 2.0, because he still naively thinks that they can thwart it again, that he could reform the place so he and crowley can still be together.
But we dont always get what we want.

the end credits guys
the way crowley just stares.
and aziraphale has about a million micro expressions a second.
he convinced himself he’s doing the right thing, but he doesn’t truly believe that. and that smile is not because he’s happy. it’s because he has convinced himself that he can make a change. but he doesn’t truly believe that, i don’t think.
