"What, in particular, do you dislike about this life?". "Everything: the constant running, the eternal play of petty passions, above all greed, the need to cut off each other's legs, the gossip, the gossip, the teasing, the eyeballing ; if you listen to conversations, your head is spinning, you feel lightheaded. At first glance, they all seem intelligent to you, you seem to read so much dignity on their faces, but as soon as you listen to them: "They gave this one this one, this one got the contract." "Why, pray tell?" someone shouts. "The one last night at the club lost everything at the game: the other one earned three hundred thousand rubles!". How boring, how boring, how boring!... But where is the man? Where did he hide? how does he get lost in such futilities?' «The world and society also have to take care of something», Stolz said, «everyone has their own interests. That's life...". “The world, society! Maybe you, Andrej, bring me into this world, into this society just to make me stop wanting to associate with them. Life: good life! What is there to look for there? Interests of the spirit or of the heart? So look where is the center around which all this moves: there is no center, there is nothing profound, nothing that reaches the heart. They are all corpses, all asleep worse than me these individuals who live in the world and in society! What drives them in life? Sure, they don't lie down, all day long they rush back and forth like flies, and what's the point? You enter a hall and you never get tired of admiring the symmetry with which the guests are arranged, the calm, thoughtful attitude with which they... play cards. A great purpose of life, no doubt about it! Excellent example for a mind that needs exercise! And these are not corpses? Maybe they don't sleep sitting all their lives? Why should I be more guilty than they, if I lie at home and not rack my brains with jacks and kings and queens?".

============= Other Info
Goncharov is a RenP'y game, submitted to the Goncharov Game Jam.
Status: Completed Genre: Unreality, Romance, Dark
CW: Blood, death, gun
============= Playthrough
First Played: Dec-2022 Last Played: 1-Sept-2023 Playtime: around 30min (2 endings) Rating: 8/10 Thoughts: The Iconic Bridge Scene
============= Review
Goncharov is a fairly short highly-stylised VN, whose story is based on the iconic bridge scene of the movie, a climax between Katya and Sofia, as truth is revealed, but betrayals can still happen... There are four endings to this game.
Spoilers ahead. It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.
The game was insanely gorgeous. Fully in black and white save for some crimson accent, the visuals portray Sofia and Katya at a stand-still on the bridge, the former wearing a dress and pointing a gun at the latter, wearing a pantsuit. Behind them, the coast of Naples, with a setting sun, with red lines encircling it slowly clockwise. A slight wind brushes through their hair and the hanging dress. The theme helps set the dramatic scene. The subtle animations even gives it that extra oomph.
While the game is titled Goncharov, it refers only in passing to the main character of the movie/meme, focusing instead on those two women*. While it is mentioned Goncharov is coming to take Katya down, he does not show his face, relegated to a line to further Katya's point. The story is about those two women, the betrayal of one of them, and the fatalistic end of their story. *Katya is married to Goncharov, taking on this name as well.
There are three choices in this story, pertaining to Sofia's past actions (killing), Katya's attire, and Katya's beliefs. Each offer one to two screens of variation after the choice. While at least one of these choices will affect the end, I have only found two. I have been wondering if the circling background may be some sort of timer affecting the ending?
I found the topic of Katya's attire quite interesting. It seemed as if she had realised who she really was, and what her place in the world might be, leaving behind the ultra-feminine glamorous outfit as was expected of her being a mafioso's wife for a more masculine relaxed and easier to move around outfit. Shedding herself to the core. A sort of emancipation - which would have fit with the period the "movie" was set to have been released (70s).
Though this might not be the ending I have in my heart for both women, I found the ending where time ran out on Katya the most striking. The fade-to-... white was particularly well done.

"Goncharov this" and "zephota that " lets talk about the real mass hallucination/fake media the oldest one
Fucking
I, Libertine.
Aka the time a radio host got so angry about new York times best selling books list and the annoying people who claimed to read all of them he made up with his listeners a over the top ironic bullshit romance and told his listeners to just ask about it in libraries to confirm no one actually read the best selling books and it was just word of mouth and popularity that made those books famous and weeks after the bit started he got reports back from his listeners including a lady who said two women on her book club said they read the fake but and one didn't liked and a guy who made a fucking thesis about it and got a B
So tik tok sit the fuck down you are not the first nor the last not even the best

being aro in fandoms is fun because sometimes u could get blindsided by ships that u didnt think it could be possible since the said media wasnt even romance focused at all, and yet somehow everyone around u seems to agree that its obviously a thing that canonically happened so u have no choice but question ur memories and perceptions. suddenly its goncharov (1973) all over again.

why would tagging it that ruin it?? if you're really desperate for it to be a tag that not everyone sees, just out all your other tags first and put #unreality at the end, so it's shows up when you press "see more tags" even so, I don't see how it ruins it, it just makes it safer and I don't see the problem with tagging it unreality. haven't posted about it myself but this hope this makes sense!!
I know I posted about Goncharov and Defunctland last night, but that was an earnest desire to see this trend examined under a microscope because it’s fascinating to see it escape containment.
However, while I know most folks are just having a bit of fun with it, the number of people complaining that others are “ruining” the joke by tagging it for unreality is too damn high.
I’ve answered far too many asks in private in the last 24 hours from folks with psychosis begging me to tell them if Goncharov is real or not because they trust me, someone they don’t know beyond my medical advocacy posts, not to lie to them.
So in case you need this: No, Goncharov is not real. It’s Tumblr having a bit of fun with a made up gangster story premise from the 1970s. Most of the gifsets you are seeing are from The Godfather and some other 70s and early 80s films. The musical scores are being composed by some very talented people here on Tumblr, as is most of the art and quotes.
I’m sorry if people are telling you it is real and are refusing to reassure you when you admit it’s causing you distress. Some people are just taking things too far for the bit and aren’t acting with kindness. I hope they will reconsider.
If you were unaware that the Goncharov is causing some people some considerable distress, that’s okay. Tumblr is huge and you can’t be expected to know everything, but please do tag all your posts and reblogs with unreality to assure people that it’s part of the site-wide joke.
If you’re one of the people complaining that tagging it with unreality “ruins” the joke, please reconsider and examine why your enjoyment of people’s distress is necessary to your enjoyment of an otherwise fun and crowd sourced bit that many people are having fun with without being cruel.
Anyway, go have fun you creative little gremlins. Just do it with more kindness.

Enid: It’s really about the romance between the two couple. It’s beautifully written, wonderfully acted and it’s such a tragic love story that people don’t realize it’s more of a romantic drama. And way ahead of its time!
Wednesday: Well, Enid it seems you have intrigued me. I am not one for classic cinema or any movies at all but this one does entice me. We can watch it when we come back from class.
Enid: Awesome! I’m glad you like the story!
Enid:
Enid: Also it’s fake!
Wednesday: I’m sorry?
Enid: Yup! It’s not real. It never happened. It’s a made up tale. An urban legend that doesn’t exist.
Wednesday:
Wednesday: Goncharov isn’t real?

Pt I wash it down but i've never watched it... and neither have you.
Well, hello there, remember when you guys tried to explain Goncharov to me and I said I wanted to create a fake movie/show? Have it, beautiful maggots. Wash It Down the TV show, mostly accurately explained. Kind of. You know me by now.
Everything is a metaphor, except for the things that are subtext.
The rich blonde girl Carla turns into a deranged psychopath, but in a way that is vaguely inspiring. In the year of our lord and damner 2024, any kind of character development is vaguely inspiring. Especially when it's done by Saoirse Ronan.
Purple hearts this RWRB that, you guys are SLEEPING on Nicholas Galitzine's role in Wash It Down. Which is mostly being disappointingly straight, until he isn't, and inspiringly revolutionary, until he isn't. Dan is honestly just a whole neurotic mess, and we at tumblr do love us a good neurotic mess.
It's a tale as old as time, really. Girl meets boy, girl falls for boy, girl meets girl, boy betrays girl, girl falls for girl, boy falls for girl. Just your average love story.
American cops being shits, just another day on planet earth. The DARE program failing miserably, just another day on planet earth.
Yasmin Finney the gorgeous as Talitha, who is very gay, very angry, and disturbingly obsessed with making paper dolls. Which I'm sure will not come into play later in the s--nvm it's another metaphor for the paper-thin veneer of civilised society in a world on fire with rage.
There is a lot of alcohol. Mostly wine. White wine. Which isn't significant, until it is because it is now also a metaphor.
Inappropriately timed renditions of the Mary Poppins 1964 soundtrack, that are guaranteed to slowly ruin your childhood until the word sugar inspires the inner arsonist in all of us.
First-Twilight-movie-levels of intense blue saturation of, well, everything. It's for the metaphor, guys, I'm sure the filmmakers knew what they were doing.
Carla and Dan are absolute OTP, until they aren't, and Carla and Talitha are absolute OTP, until Carla pulls a gun on Talitha and sings a lullaby to her. I am no longer sure the filmmakers knew what they were doing.
The world is Bad Bad Very Bad. Which I'm sure none of us can relate to.
Love is complicated and unstable, but like, in a shippy way. Mostly.
An oddly specific ring of imagery that becomes so convoluted that it starts to parody itself until the show is a metaphor for the show itself and even Christopher Nolan is raising his glass in reluctant admiration.
Senseless cliffhangers that are an interesting directing choice for sure. Bold, but interesting.
More Mary Poppins. Your childhood is entirely ruined. You become an arsonist.
The paper dolls catch fire. You are now part of the metaphor.
Very cute romance with a lot of attempted murder and societal rebellion thrown in. Hallmark is shaking.
Accurate? Who knows. Not you. Not me. Not anyone... yet.
@queermarzipan @madfangirlontheloose tagged for no suspicious reason.
