Gombóc Artúr A Télapó – Pom Pom Meséi (1978)

I fear I'm gonna need some context here. Pom Pom Meséi translates to “Pom Pom's Tales” and is a Hungarian animation about a hairy shapeshifter who accompanies a little girl to school every day and tells her a story on the way. Either that, or they help out one of their many colorful friends. It's lovely. It is also one of the things I used to watch as a child at my grandparent's, so lots of nostalgia involved. Finally, this is also going to be a demonstration of my eternal struggle with “which supernatural mythological entity brings gifts to whom and when in December”: The tradition exists everywhere in Europe, and it is almost the same everywhere, except that there are just enough local differences that I feel a need to differentiate. Personal thing, I am sure that most people don't do this.

On Christmas Eve, Pom Pom goes to visit Picur and finds her waiting impatiently for the Télapó (basically Santa, but it just feels wrong to call him that). He joins her and tells her a story of how Gombóc Artúr, the Fat Bird who only ever eats chocolate decided on one winter to be the Télapó since he is too fat to fly and consequently has to stay for the winter every year. He got all of his friends chocolate, but then ate it all out of fear of giving them unequal presents. And because it's chocolate and he loves chocolate. So he made little snow Artúrs, that of course melted once inside the house. His disappointed friends chased him while throwing snowballs at him. By the time Pom Pom finishes his story, the Télapó has passed and both him and Picur find a miniature version of themselves under the tree.

Opinion: 100% pure, really adorable, absolutely perfect in every way. As I said, I'm biased, but this series really is just a collection of really sweet stories for children. They often have a morale, I haven't really found it in this one, though. Maybe it is something along the lines of “keep your promises”. Or maybe there really isn't one.
