the face eiji made here was so painful, it reminded me of another time he made it

so i was rewatching banana fish because i was getting a close online friend to watch it for her first time (this is ur sign to make ur besties suffer too if u havent already :>) and while watching episode 13, i got a better look at this pained expression eiji made..

in this scene, he was having an inner dialogue addressed to ash, where he speaks of the nightmares ash suffers through and how he pretends not to notice them and in this shot we see an example of it. eiji's back is turned to ash so that he can't see eiji's face or tell that he's awake. he then wonders to himself what ash dreamt of that had him so distressed at night. this is pretty cut-and-dry and there's nothing really to discuss here that hasn't been talked about already but i have such great appreciation for this show because the look on eiji's face here reminded me of a different face he made in episode 22:

something atrocious just happened to ash and eiji can tell immediately upon seeing the way he was acting when finally away from the commotion of gunfire. and while eiji hasn't gone through the things ash has gone through, hasn't witnessed them directly or even had knowledge of just how disgusting people could be up until recently, he looks at ash's current state, looks at how shaken up and afraid he is, and he looks so angry.

i know a lot of people (not the majority but definitely some) have a kind of reaction to this scene of frustration towards eiji for not being angry or "showing" his anger. they get mad at him for not saying anything or turning to violence or thinking of vengeance. and i think that reaction, while understandable, is not necessary here and would have ruined the weight of a scene like this, especially in the context of such a graphic crime like rape. even if he did have the reaction those people watching wanted, its not like he can deliver on it at all.

what he felt then was an intense anger, seething quietly but still present, towards the world. towards foxx. towards every adult in ash's life that didn't help or intervene or protect him through the hell ash was going through. and yet it already happened. bloodshed or blind fury wouldn't undo it, all it would do is add to ash's baggage and nobody wants that. realistically, he only had one thing that he could give to ash and it was the one thing ash needed most. he needed all his swaying pieces to be held together and no amount of outrage will ever have the same impact as that moment of silence where eiji held him in his arms.

those same things eiji wonders whether ash dreams of them are the things he witnessed ash walk away from during that moment of vulnerability. his exploitation. if it weren't for the greed of men, ash would not have had those nightmares, and that's why eiji had that same look on his face when hearing ash wake up from one. he knew that no matter what the nightmare was, it had something to do with the way he's either neglected or used and abused by adults all the time

god this show hurts. he probably wanted to do so much more in that moment yet all he could do was hold ash in his arms

Does anyone realise how ash died with Dino’s last name?

like, Dino had adopted him, and he never went through any papers to get another last name or anything, so like, he never really managed to change his last name.

He still ended up being trapped, by contract on paper, still being Dino’s, no matter what happens.

He ended up getting stabbed with Dino’s last name, and made his choice to go to the library and bleed out/basically commit suicide despite how he never actually lived a free life.

Because the person who stabbed him didn’t hit any vital organs, had a perfect chance to simply go to the doctor to fix his wounds and change his name to live an actual life and everything like that, even if it meant missing his plane and not being able to be with Eiji for a while, or being away from him.

And along with that, although to us we might’ve easily forgotten about the scene where Dino announced that he was adopting Ash, it must’ve been tormenting and impactful for him to realise that he’d officially belong to the same person who had tormented him since he was a young child. There is no way he forgot about the fact that he was Dino’s adopted child so easily.

So why did he not want to? With his intellect, I doubt he didn’t realise it wasn’t a vital organ.

Was it because he felt he didn’t deserve freedom, or was he simply already content enough with seeing Eiji free?

Did he feel guilty for making Eiji endure all that for him, just so he could be safe again, or that in the process of gaining his free will, Eiji had lost his sunshine?

Was it that he felt that because of the way he couldn’t achieve his own justice through killing Dino, and the way Dino died (suicide) made him undeserving of his reward which was a true life?

Was it that he couldn’t bear the thought of living life without Eiji too draining, even if for a short while, and he couldn’t bear being far away from him?

Was it that he thought that his presence would continue to taint or corrupt Eiji?

Or was it just that he was content with seeing Eiji safe and happy, and couldn’t care about himself anymore?

Either way, in the end, he never got true free will.

This continues for three days its so bad half the staff skips their duties to give Shorter whatever he wants. Ash grumbles as he sets up the tubs for the next set of customers. 

“ Ash!”  Yut Lung runs into the bathhouse in his nightclothes, hair down no makeup and looking upset. 

“ Yut Lung?” 

“ Non of my servants will tend to me! Everyone is too busy with the new customer!” 

“ You shouldn’t be upset,” Ash said. 

“ You don’t understand how can you? Griffin your father they love you!” Yut Lung exclaimed 

“ The way they treat you isn’t love” Ash said 

“ What do you know about love? Ash Lynx you don’t even reconize it when its right in front of you!” 

“ Stop you and I are from different worlds!” Ash declared “ humans cann’t  love Foxes” 

Yut Lung blanches and turns and runs out of the bathing room ***

Ash walks into Dino’s office “ You wanted to see me asshole?” he asked 

“ When I first got Yut Lung I had no clue what a gift I was given. I thought he was like any other whore here. But my fair treatment caused my dear Yut Lung to be unhappy.” Dino explains. 

“The Bathhouse could barely stay afloat even once you started having him pampered,” Ash said though his teeth fuck you you bastard fuck you fuck you! 

“ Lately Yut Lung has been full of joy because of you Ash. So make up with him, get him glowing again.” Dino orders. “ Do whatever it takes”

Funny Banana Fish Trivia

As promised, I will now explain the hilarious mystery of the duck I mention in the last post. (And add the rest of this section tomorrow, because it’s late & work exists.)

So, the duck.

The scene in question is It’s on the bottom of pg. 69 of Vol. 1 of Banana Fish.

Dino is holding either a book or folder. We see a beautiful shot of Angie (one of his bodyguards / goons) and his fabulous mustache, also his classic 80s elbow patch.

It is a den. Or a study. Yes, there are books on the walls.

But it is not a library.

Because I refuse to agree it is anything else, because the thought of Dino Golzine in a library, such a glorious, wonderful place, full of imagination, learning, hope and murder, hurts my soul.

Yes, I said murder. Because Agatha Christie.

Anyway, in the bottom panel showing the study, there is a desk.

On the desk is a partly carved, wooden duck, set on a piece of paper or cloth, with obvious shavings around it. And I know it’s a duck & not a goose because it’s neck isn’t long enough for a goose (see below, and note how the bill is different from the adorable baby duck above.)

I just - I just found this so absolutely hilarious and fascinating when I discovered it last week in a re-read (see, this is why you re-read things!)

I bet you we will never find out why. It’s just a thing he’s doing, probably to relax, because carving is very soothing (unless you have a fear of cutting yourself.) Also, it’s such a, I don’t know, casual hobby to have, after his snobby & expensive wine knowledge & orchids.

And of course, being Dino Golzine, he’s not just using a pocket knife. It’s an actual carving utensil that you could buy at a crafts store. Because why not.

first things first, of course, life would be way more peaceful as ever for ash. he doesn't particularly need to feel worried as much. his guard is still up at times ofc, but not as bad as bef.

which means he is able to see you freely now.

and like, he might leave the whole gang/mafia stuff behind, just to try pursuing a normal life with you.

with your constant support ( and maybe sometimes he wouldn't admit it ), he'll get through it well! <33

and i couldn't really decide but-- i feel like he wouldn't need much studying anymore anyway bc of his IQ level :")

buuuuut if he ever did, he probably would've wanted to take the same classes as you do if possible. i mean, he isn't that, yk introverted or anything. he still possesses the feeling of deep mistrust toward people, and i feel like maybeee it's smth he might do.

but yeah i also feel like he would try to actively avoid the whole school stuff. he wouldn't want to be asked with unnecessary questions about his past, lifestyle, etc.

he already wishes to live a normal life, after all.

and like, i somehow able to imagine him working as a barista/waiter of some sort for some reason?? idk why.

anyway, life would still be much better despite on whatever he decided to do ( away from the whole old stuff he experienced ).

he's still healing himself; both physically and mentally. and whatever your role might be around this time-- either as his best friend or even as his girlfriend, you would've support him either way.

just know that ash appreciates you a LOT. even when sometimes he doesn't even know on how to express it that well :")

okay so if the romance route happens somehow, he would be taking you out on a casual date during your break days or even his. depending on your schedules.

but his protective and cautious instinct is still present as always. he wouldn't want anything to potentially harm you when he's trying to move on from his old life with you.

his trauma and his past still haunt him at times, so he's just so, so lucky and grateful that you're there with him even during his lowest moments.

if he ever works or something, you probably will join him so you both work together in a way ( if it's smth you're able to do ).

you both def would live together if you two finally got some stable jobs ( or if you're still studying somehow, part-time job then ); separating the bills smth like that so you both would pay in a fair amount for the monthly rent and even for the groceries stuff.

omg dunno why but the idea seemed comforting-

he wouldn't mind for anything else bc if it meant to live a normal life with you, then so be it.

eiji and shorter would def pay you both a visit occasionally 10000% ( idc this will be my canon now )
