I had a ton of fun writing it and hopefully it’s not rubbish.

It took time and patience with an unpracticed key guided by an unsteady grip. A petite, pale girl caught her lip between her teeth, a tiny grunt escaping as she finagled with the door.

"Raven, is that you?"

But she was starting to get used to this.

There was a concluding click as the key's metal ridge caught the groove in the last lock of the six panel apartment door. When it opened, in wandered a wearied Raven Roth.

And Raven would have liked to think she wandered in gracefully, but she knew she was dragging. It was impossible not to while wearing shoes so abhorrently impractical they should have been illegal. So violent was the aching in her heels, that by the final stretch of half-block, they were nearly numbed. Gods and her back—it was practically killing her.

If she was being honest, Raven felt like something one of those city sweeping trucks scraped off the sidewalk at four-thirty in the morning. One could only hope she didn't look like it.

"Roy," Raven winced, eyelids squeezing shut as she spoke. "I'm alive—but barely."

"Jay?" Roy called out from somewhere in the foreground. "Where are you?"

As expected a low, disembodied grunt ushered out in lieu of a response.

"Didn't you hear—Raven's back!"

The door slid closed and a gust of air entered the foyer behind her, carrying with it the heady notes of brown sugar, nutmeg, and melted butter. And like a Pavlovian response, she forgot the discomfort and led herself up by the nose. Spine straightening, legs lifting, then posture rising. It was like her whole being had been revitalized in an instant. Who knew the promise of a home-cooked meal could do that? A wistful smile steered into her face as Raven thought about how evenings after work used to transpire.

Weeks ago, one foot in the door usually meant bra optional. And flattening into a decompression on the couch was a non-negotiable.

Needless to say, a welcome like this one would never not catch her off guard.

"Something smells like you've outdone yourself again," Raven spoke loudly over the faint sounds of sizzling, curiously craning her neck and sniffing the air distractedly.

And then Roy appeared. He was peering out into the foyer, red hair bleeding out against the backdrop of a white walled interior. "Dinner will be ready soon," he supplied and beamed at her. The brightness faded in increments as his deep pine eyes floated downward and he took what she was holding.

"Again?"

"Yep." Raven gave a single solemn nod and Roy let out a dramatic sigh.

"But it's Friday. Those bastards..." he muttered in disbelief and Raven smirked. Suddenly, he inclined his head toward the other room and inhaled suspiciously. "Do you...smell that?" Roy went rigid in realization. "It smells like I forgot the flip."

"It smells like...that one's Jason's," Raven corrected.

Red eyebrows raised, clearly impressed. "Right." He marched back briskly toward the kitchen, only pausing to point at the heavy bag full of file folders teetering on her shoulder. "You'll have to tell me and Jaybird all about...that."

"Yes, please." Raven let out a huff, lower lip quivering. "You're an angel..." Roy winked at the pout topped by pleading purple and disappeared.

"The irony," a low drawl called from just around the corner. "Are you always such a sight for sore eyes?"

It was Jason walking over with arms out as wide as his grin. Even without the sarcasm, his aura and footsteps were distinct—a dead giveaway. They were oddly as heavy as they were silent.

"Whoa…" he looked as concerned as Roy had moments ago. "Or are you just sore?" Strong, steady hands removed her bag from her shoulder. "That's better." Raven rolled her stiff arm muscles.

It was a relief, to hand off her burden for a moment, to no longer be dragged down by the weight of her work—and the world.

"How was our day?" he pressed like a man who knew the answer.

"Rough—and long..."

Quickly Jason knelt down, hand reaching out for her calf. "I've got you, Princess." And Raven placed a balancing hand on his shoulder while he undid her shoes, a grateful half-smile stitching across her face.

"Come, come."

He took her hand, twirling her around past the living room to deposit her right onto a stool next to the island. "Sit. Harper's making crepes." Jason pulled her stool close and spun it around, so he was faced with the back of her.

"Take it from me, they'll help with the tension. Of course... I also believe in a hands-on approach." Jason then cracked his knuckles—mostly for effect, because boy did he know what he was doing. His hands slid up her arms, to her shoulders and worked them over, then dug into the surrounding muscles with his fingers and kneaded hard with his thumbs.

"Mmm..." Raven's tension began to ebb and wane. "Well, that helps a little..." Jason turned up the pressure a few more degrees while his breath grew heated on her neck.

Aroma clouds were wafting around their heads, while Roy flipped another crepe in slow motion. And in an instant, Raven was transported to some sort variant of a Jason and Roy spa she didn't know she needed.

"Okay, that helps a lot." And she moaned in spite of herself. All her stress was melting away, turning into liquid and evaporating off of her, faster than the French butter Roy was melting on the stove. He tilted the bright red crepe pan in all directions, getting an even gloss of sweet, golden goodness in every crevice. And Jason's hands continued to manipulate each one of hers, until all the tightness in her upper body unknotted itself.

"Hmm, where else—where else? Ah." Jason's rough hands took hold of the chevron patterned lace covering her ankles and he began to massage away. "Did I tell you, how much I like these stockings?"

Raven seemed not to hear him. "Harder," she whispered. His knuckle pounded gently down her arches, then ground fixedly into her heel and, painstakingly along the sides. By the time he took her other foot into his lap, she was practically cooing. "Did I tell you how good you are at that?" The tip of Jason's tongue edged over the corner of his smile.

Gods.

"That really is a shame..." he said and Raven lifted her head towards him in question. "About your day? How rough and hard it was..." His hand was lowering, slowing, but lingering. "Normally when you put those two adjectives together... It could be a good thing."

"Okay...!" Roy had come over suddenly with his spatula proffering a piece of crepe, still steaming hot from the pan. "I'm testing something out tonight, so I've added a special ingredient to this batch."

"Oh good. Raven did have one of those days. She could use some..." Jason pantomimed a flippant gesture. It could have been taking a long drag or it could have been—

"Not that kind... A different kind of special..." Roy shot Jason and Raven a long once over. Something in the way he said special made the air around them begin to bristle with titillation, anticipation. "A few drops of...lavender extract..." His voice dropped another octave. And he began to blow on the bite while Raven and Jason watched his full lips. It seemed cooling the steam from the crepe had an opposite and equal reaction. As if each breath was fanning the flames rising between them, like a bellow into charred embers in the hearth of a fireplace.

"Let me know what you think of it." Gently, he fed her piece from his fingers and Jason leaned his face close to hers, like he was attempting to steal it straight from her lips. Just before the point of contact, Roy clicked his tongue playfully.

Almost like he was calling him off.

"If you want some you'll have to wait." Dazedly, Raven blinked at Roy. He shook his head of chin length crimson hair, half of it was up in a bun with the rest hanging in his face. "I'll be back with the rest." Teasingly, Roy waved the spatula like a stake to ward off his dark-haired, undead roommate.

"Jason..." The brunette inched nearer to her at the sound of his name. She kicked his stool with her foot so it swiveled further away. Ultimately, it only caused him to move even closer. "Aren't we in rare form tonight?" she sighed.

"Don't know what you're talking about," Jason insisted bemusedly, doing his best to appear impassive. "I'm always like this." He examined her wrist with his forefinger and thumb. "As for you... That office of yours must be working you damn near to the bone. Did you somehow manage to get tinier, Raven?" The left corner of his lips curled up.

She tore it away and glared at him, aghast. "Insufferable, patronizing," Raven muttered under her breath, nursing her wounded forearm. "Ass."

"But this ass speaks the truth," he raised an eyebrow loftily. "If you would just join our firm..."

"Your firm?" Purple orbs narrowed to slits. "Just because you guys are mercenaries for hire—"

"Mmm... We really prefer the term 'vigilantes,'" Jason punctuated with air quotes. "Actually, from a branding perspective, it's Heroes for Hire™—Roy's got a whole...thing..."

"Whatever you're calling your 'backwoods operation'." Raven's air quotes didn't disguise the disdain in her voice. "The point is, I like my non-profit just fine... And I am not tiny."

"Alriiight." Roy arrived with a huge ceramic serving dish full of crepes with powdered sugar dusted on top. "Eat them while they're hot. Raven..." He slid a plate over to her. "Eat up."

"I thought I would always get the first bite," Jason teased. Then quickly lunged forward, stopping short of Roy's smirk, hip cocked toward his. "What've you got for me, Harps?"

On a delay, the redhead drew back, as if he just remembered Raven was in the room. "Don't be greedy, Jay," he said at last.

The ebony haired man, raised an eyebrow, but began to unload fresh food onto his plate. Once every inch of real estate was covered in crepe, Jason started to attack with his fork.

"So, when have I ever been greedy?"

Was that besides the fact that his plate was loaded up with most of the food the archer had just cooked? And besides the fact that he hadn't really helped?

But then... neither had Raven. Unless licking the batter and 'testing out' a crepe or two counted.

"Well, Raven's barely eaten a crepe and you're drifting into seconds. Where's your hospitality? Shouldn't you share with our guest?"

"I can be hospitable..." He chuckled. "I'd rather just...share our guest."

Roy shot him a warning glare on his way back to the stove. Jason shrugged before closing in another crepe and filling his mouth with another forkful.

"You're amazing," Raven deadpanned.

"Aren't I? But I've got nothing on the food. I have to say, this is the best batch by far," he announced. "Roy, do you have any more of those blueberries you got from the farmer's market over the weekend?" Jason started to smirk at Raven. "Or strawberries? I know how much you enjoy them."

"Try the table," Roy yelled over his shoulder, mild irritation edged in his tone.

"Well..." Raven shrugged, her expression coy as she reached over for the blue container. "They are in season..." There were few things that could enhance Roy's crepes, except fresh berries. Raven puffed out her cheeks as she rifled through an almost empty berry basket. "And... there are only three left... You sure helped yourself," she accused heavily under her breath.

"I didn't see your name on them," Jason returned. "So it was fair game, like anything else in this apartment."

Raven folded her arms. "I thought Roy got them for me, didn't you Roy?" He glanced up at her as he moved around the open kitchen.

"Sorry, we're low, Rae," Roy said regrettably. "I should have picked up more. You'd think after a couple weeks, I wouldn't still be acclimating to having an additional mouth to feed. What can I say?"

"Yes, we're very sorry." Jason pinched her stocking-clad leg, eliciting a gasp.

Raven cut knife-sharp purple eyes at him before the redhead came around to her stool. Roy wiped a hand across the words Banging Redheads & Banging Brunches printed in a large black font on the apron.

Probably a Christmas gift.

And one for which Jason must have been responsible.

He ruffled the purple strands at Raven's crown with his spatula free hand. "I hope that's okay."

"Don't be ridiculous." She brushed the strings fastening the charcoal colored apron and tugged. "Now go take that off and come eat with us." Roy planted a kiss on the top of her head, and shuffled out of the kitchen.

"Hmm...I guess I could have blueberries..." Raven mused. "Now that I think about it, they'd really compliment the lavender. I don't know that strawberries would in the same way."

"Do you know that for a fact?" Jason took a small sip from his cup, eyes trained on her through the glass. "Or have you ever considered...both?"

With a startling scowl, Raven looked up from the melted whipped cream atop the remaining crepes on the granite counter. "Have you ever considered why I like Roy more?" She retorted. "It's this."

"Really?" And Raven pushed his stupidly handsome, smirking face away from her own. "Little bird, don't tease," Jason moaned, dragging out the last syllable. "I promise to be good, I'll share—I certainly don't mind sharing with Roy." She rolled her eyes, popping a blueberry in her mouth and chewing thoughtfully.

Jason was mostly euphemism on a good day, but this was different. He'd been dropping these odd hints all week. But Raven told herself it was another unexpected caveat about living here. She didn't think she should breach the subject or even read too much into them.

After all, she was only crashing with Jason and Roy for a little while longer.

This was purely temporary, until the super in her building got around to fixing the circulation unit in her water closet of a studio. Or that was what she told herself at first. She was quickly growing accustomed to the perks of living with them.

Being spoiled was... Well, it was nothing short of wonderful.

Gone were the days of scrounging up sad boxes of cereal for breakfast, schlepping together leftover takeout for lunch, or unearthing bags of nearly expired popcorn for dinner. Roy and Jason worked out a ton and ensured their fridge was always stocked. Even on the off-chance that it rained and the farmer's market wasn't open in the park so they could do locally-sourced organic.

That, and they could actually cook.

At a moment's notice, Roy could whip up an amazing French toast, or a hearty stew. If they were feeling wild he'd make them breakfast for dinner or vice versa. Even Jason's most experimental chili recipe could be redeemed by a few generous grates of cheese or a dollop of sour cream.

And clearly business was great, because their apartment was fantastic. It was spacious, but had all these homey touches, like a handcrafted breakfast nook Roy and Jason built together.

But tangible things aside, Raven found she actually didn't mind the company. So gone were the days of being alone.

The moments where he wasn't an insufferable tease, Jason loved attending their two person book-club. They talked books, trashy to classic and everything in between, often punctuated by an impromptu neck or foot rub.

When Roy wasn't working out, planning a job, or doling out heaps of domesticity onto her and Jason, he was a hopeless romantic. He reinvigorated Raven's secret love of rom-coms. But he also liked to learn from her. So he played chess, scrabble, even backgammon, and once in a while they were able to rope in Jason for monopoly. Roy was a very graceful loser at board games, but he was amazing when he got his hands around a deck of cards. And Raven was finding, she had a lot to learn from him.

But Raven's favorite nights were the ones where they could all just be. Listening to something old or indie in the background and talking until the three of them simply passed out.

The apartment just felt full—of fun, of food, of friends. Of laughter and love.

It was a wonderful life, but it was a shame it wasn't her life. Raven was a realist, she knew she'd have to go back.

But for now, she was going to enjoy every single second of it.

Your heart skips a beat, you and Harry were not married.

"Just Selena" you correct him.

"My apologies, Deborah will take you to your private room." He says pointing to her.

A short thin middle aged woman appeared from the room behind him and brought you into a private room. "You may store your private items here Mrs. Styles" the woman says before leaving you.

"It's just Selena" you sigh.

You entered your private room. It had lilac purple walls and golden brown wooden floors. Gold letters on the walls saying 'Serenity is calling'. You admired the marble table top, a tightly wrapped package lay atop it. A small tag on the package stated, 'Large sized personal dressing gown'.

With your dressing gown on over your comfortably bare body, you were escorted down a short hallway to get massage. You reached a door it was open and see a thin tall blonde woman. You assumed she was the masseuse. Her name tag read 'Clara'.

"Hello Clara my name is Selena" you said. She nodded as she closed the door locking it for no intrusion. You laid on the sheet covered massage table stomach down placing your head into the pillow rest. She placed a towel on your and started moving up your body massaging away and knots or pain.

After your body massage the short woman from before brought you to another room for a manicure. You got long coffin shaped nails, the colors of Harry's fine line album art, the pink and blue was bright on your nails. But you liked them, they were a little piece of Harry with you.

Your body felt completely relaxed, checking your phone in the car home. A message from 'Sweet Creature'. That was Harry's name in your phone.

Harry: Hope your feeling better Sels,♥️ Tell the driver to take you to our special spot by the beach.

You: See you soon😘

The driver takes you to the beach house that you and Harry share. It's in a hidden beach, very private.

You walked into the house, a trail of 'Sunflower' flower petals leads to a medium sized gold packaged bag. You open it it find a créme colored dress. And a note. The dress was silky, it stopped just above your knees. You got dressed into the outfit and read the note.

'Meet me in the at the back door' - H

You walk to the backdoor, seeing him standing there with a blindfold in hand.

"Put this on and take my hand Selena" he says handing your he blindfold. You take the silky blindfold and place it over your eyes as Harry ties it in place. "You look lovely in that dress Selena" he said taking your hand. "Thank you Harry" he leads you outside, down the back pathway. Rubbing your hand with his long ringed fingers.

He stops, " I'm going to remove the blindfold, ok?"

"Ok Harry" you say calmly.

He removes it standing behind you, your eyes still closed. He wraps his arms around your curvy body squeezing you lightly. "Open them Selena" he says, You open your eyes to see a beautiful scene. A candle lit picnic near the shore on the beach.

"Oh Harry " you say blushing in pure utter love with him. He smiles taking your hand in his. Leading you down to the picnic.

You sit and he sits next to you. Your eyes admiring everything, the candles he lit, the food, the picnic basket. But your admiring Harry more. Everything about him. His deep green eyes looked like perfect emeralds in this lighting. The candle light bouncing off every curve in his face made you tingle. His tanned skin was 'Golden' in this light.

His perfect pink lips smiled widely at you, as he stared into your chocolate brown eyes. He hand came up and caresses your cheek. "Your perfect Selena" he says blushing a bit. He digs in the picnic basket and pulls out a bottle of Watermelon Champange and pours some for you and him into the glasses. You sip the drink, "This is beautiful Harry. But something's going on?". He smiles shaking his head. You can tell he is hiding somthing, the way he fidgets with his rings and the wine glass .

"How was the spa? I see you got your nails done I love the color. They are pretty" he says completely avoiding your question.

You ignore it and continue with enjoying Harry. After your both done eating he packs up the dishes and food. You both lay on the blanket with the small pillows under your heads. Looking at the romantic sunset it makes your stomach tingle.

He sits up, you go to sit up with him but he stops you. "Stay there love. I just want to admire your beauty" he says caressing your curvy side with the side of his hand feeling your perfect curves. Tracing gently up from your ankles up your legs. Past your knees up your dress to your waist.

You find yourself breathing fast and deep just at him doing this. Making your insides twist 'Wanting him'. He climbs on top of you pressing his chest against your . Pressing his sweet lips against your perfectly plump ones.

The kiss is long and passionate, his hands traveling all around you. Feeling your wonderful body, worshiping every curve. It was a full romantic makeout session. He was smiling in the kiss, and you could feel it.

He finally brakes away, breathless. "Let's go for a walk love." He gets up off you gently. He helps you up. You walk down the shore letting the water hit your bare feet. It was cooling, the water reaching just below your ankles as you both walked.

Harry stops a bit down the beach. The sunset perfectly shining on him and yourself.

"Selena, your my everything you know that right? " He asks staring directly into your eyes.

"Yes Harry?"

"Any you know that I wouldn't change that for anybody or anything?" He says. Your heart is beating a million miles an hour.

"Yes Harry." It's all you can say at this point

"Well we have been together for 4 years now and we are still young but I want this now. I wouldn't want anybody else. I want you, all your creativity, your humour, that smile that kills me over and over everyday I see it. Your constantly support me and my every move. Your needy, horny, and incredibly wonderful.". He says wiping away a small tear.

Your practically putty in his hands at this point.

"Selena your more to me than anyone else in this world. I don't want anything you do for me to go unnoticed. So I have a questions for you? "He blushes seeing you trying not to cry.

He gets down on his knee pulling out a dark red velvet box opening it during the question.

"Selena darling? Will you be forever mine and marry me?" Deeply staring at you. Taking in every detail of your face waiting for your response.

It's takes you a few seconds leaving him in pure agony until you finally say.

"YES! Yes Harry. I will" you hug him kissing his lips hard and passionate.

"Oh I'm so happy". He stands up removing the ring from the box. And sliding it on your perfect finger. "It fits" he says with releif. "I was so worried about what it was going to look like that I never realised the size of your finger.". He chuckles.

You smile back. You never really looked at the ring you where to far in the moment. You admired it on your finger. It reminded you of Harry so much. The delicate elegance it held.

The rest of the night was spent in Harry's perfect embrace wrapped around your body. Smiling the rest of the night.

" I love you Mrs. Selena Styles" he says kissing your lips.

Next Caller Pt 18

Straight to your room you went stealing the chance to let him in for once luring out his grin again at your amusement in the task. At the hall past the main living area you split up in the hall and his hand reluctantly left your side.

Behind closed doors nerves were still there at having to strip, even in private. Your formerly untidy bed now made up with an odd colored toffee on the pillow next to a fish keychain you smirked at the little puffer fish that when squeezed and it’s eyes lit up. Adding that to your bag you started with your shoes, socks followed after and in a slight wiggle you lowered your jeans after emptying our pockets on the bed.

A tug over your head had your shirt off and added to the folded pile you returned to your suitcase and in just your bra and panties in a tempting lace coated black bra with cute boy shorts to match you pulled your hair tie out and wound your hair up into a high bun hoping to keep it mainly out of the way. From the foot of the bed you lifted the embroidered fish coated robe waiting there and eased it on and slid your feet into the slippers coated in colorful embroidered fish.

Tying the sash you crossed the room and let yourself out with phone in hand after locking your wallet in your satchel inside the suitcase with your goody bag. Out into the living room you walked and sat on the edge of the couch wondering how this would go. After all it would be your first time next to naked with not just him but any man that wasn’t a physician doing a check up.

And in his exit from the hall it seemed he had caught your nerves or found some of his own by his timid blush and throat clearing to say, “Just a small walk now. Then we get to rubbing.” At that his brows inched up and he said, “Not, us, but-, we’re getting rubbers.” But that only made him inhale as you giggled to yourself and stood.

“Come on, before all the blood goes to your head and your feet go numb.” You said taking a step to him claiming his hand leading the way to the door, by which you had left your key and picked it up to pocket ensuring you wouldn’t forget it. “Let’s go find our rubbers,” you murmured, giggling at his next sharp inhale.

“At least you find my verbal blunders amusing.”

“How could I not? What a thrill make a guy like you blush.”

To himself he muttered, “Guy like me…” within sight of the door to the spa with golden fish blowing jets of golden sculpted water forming the frame to the screen like white door revealing the lights from inside with golden letters on the door naming it he spa center for your floor.

A grin eased across the face of the woman at the desk as well as the pair of masseuses who walked around a half wall bowing their heads and naming themselves as Bo and Jo.

Bo, “I see you are from #,” motioning to the room number on the pin on the collar of your robes.

Jo however said, “Miss, if you are uncomfortable with a male massaging you we do have a Dam available to swap with me.”

You shook your head to the sweet seeming burly probably could blink a Boulder in half hunk of a Dwarf beside his identical brother, in all but a couple inches in the belly and his darker chocolate hair. “A male is fine.”

At that their hands motioned to the side, saying together, “This way, if you please.”

A spacious orange tinted room filled with the scent of grapefruit welcomed you and Bo said, “Now we have chosen the lavender free room, it is not uncommon for some to have an aversion or irritation to the supposedly calming scent. Are there any injuries or tender spots we should be aware of?”

Thorin said, “My left hip, had a bad dislocation once and it might give off a bad pop but other than that I should be fine.”

The pair looked to you and you said, “My left shoulder is a bit tender, well it’s more along he collarbone really, and my right hamstring doesn’t flex as much as the left. Pulled or tore something ages ago, and it just hasn’t been the same.”

Jo smirked saying, “I will certainly see what I can do about that.”

Bo stated in his turn for the covered tables a couple feet apart, “If you would remove your robes and stretch out on your bellies please.”

The pair turned with towels in their hands and lowering your eyes you turned to the table easing off your robe you had loosened the sash to feeling the Dwarf eyeing the scattered former nicks and cuts across your back.

Jo, “Do you play contact sports?”

“No, I was an engineer for naval carriers.”

“Wow,” the Twins replied.

“Used to be the go to one for all the tight places.”

Up onto the table you climbed and shifted to lay out on your belly reaching back to unhook your bra you shifted your shoulders free from the straps while he covered your backside wondering at the brand like scar on the back of your thigh just under your butt cheek halfway hidden by your underwear.

Bo asked as Thorin laid out on his, “Did you serve as well?”

Softly you said holding your bra over your cleavage in settling flat, “You know I’ve never asked you that.”

After a weak chuckle he said in a glance at you, “Tank mechanic mostly. Me and Dwalin, Balin has just retired, not much action but we did get to work on a HailBird Jet once. Couldn’t find anyone else around so they settled for us, but it was amazing.”

“Not much action is a good thing,” you said laying flat aligning your face in the cushioned pocket while he did the same and the brothers guided your arms back how they wanted them at your sides. From your shoulders down the pair worked and slowly you could feel your eyes trying to droop at the combination of their healing chants to help relax your bodies and hidden aches. Though as soon as his hand touched just above your right knee your eyes shot wide open at the intense shooting pain you felt in your knee. In biting our lip you kept quiet, only deepening your breaths to show your pain and Jo said, “Ah, that’s what it is. You’ve got a Mburr knot.”

Bo said, “Nasty things.”

Jo reached over grabbing a small set of acupuncture needles he warned you and tapped his finger where each was going. A simple count down later and you felt the pricks of the needles and the pain simply circling inside the barriers of the needles. Below the needles he worked his thumbs down to the heel of your foot he pressed on hard sliding his thumbs down into the arch of your foot dissipating the pain steadily. Down to your toes he curled back his hand molded then slowly he raised your leg to bend back. A few simple rotations of your ankle and it popped loudly making you lift your head only to lay it down again at Bo’s saying, “Should be eased out now, Miss.”

Jo lowered your leg and removed the needles and began to rub your leg again instantly making you realize the tension was gone. “See, all better.”

“I got no clue how the doctors I’ve seen on that couldn’t fix it before.”

Jo, “Mainly Dwarves get them. Did you have a bad fall?”

“My carrier was attacked. It came when it tipped over, tried to stop myself on a wall.”

Bo, “That’ll do it.”

Carefully after your other legs were done the pair lifted the towels and Jo raised the second above the one covering your hips to lay over your chest in their instruction for you to turn over. After securing your bra strap again you shifted to turn onto your back stealing a glimpse at Thorin’s tiny adjustments to be in the center of the table and dark hair coated chest rising in a deep breath. In your look back he stole a glimpse of his own at your arms shifting allowing the momentarily stunned Jo to fold the towel over your chest you laid your arms over. Clearly both brothers had seen your piercings and in a rubbing of their palms together they said, “Alright, starting at the top again.”

Carefully inspecting your left shoulder Jo said, “Nice tattoo,”

“Thank you, Thorin’s,” you looked at Thorin on your right, “Dwalin and Bilbo aren’t married yet, are they?”

“Not yet, no. Still partners.” he replied catching your eye, having already been looking at you still when you turned your head.

Looking back to Jo you said, “His cousin’s partner helped to cover some old scars.”

Jo nodded, “It’s incredible work, couldn’t tell there was a scar there.” Lowering his hands to smooth his fingers around your shoulders to do a slight adjustment on your head to trail his fingers around your neck and work his way down. Feeling how serious the scars are. Carefully working each arm to the fingers then moved onto the other. Skipping your pectorals his hands eased to your ribs below the towel and over your belly he worked down to your hips and made slight shifts of your legs to press his way down them. Trailing his fingers firmly over the tops of your feet he worked around your ankles and the bottoms of your feet asking, “You like bunnies?”

“They are adorable.”

Bo feeling the swirling tension growing in Thorin stated, “You know our sister had a vicious bunny when we were little. Couldn’t do anything with it, not even pet it, used to try to bite and claw at us.”

“She must have had a hare then, domestic variations are less hostile in cages.”

Bo, “She did find it hurt in our yard and patched him up. That explains a lot.” Before his brother could speak he said, “I think it’s time for some hot rocks and meditations.”

Across your bodies hot rocks were placed with comments to alert them if they were too hot then the pair left the room and you couldn’t help but giggle and ask near to a whisper, “So we just lay here? How long are they gone for?”

Thorin hummed back, “They were gone for 673 Khazad-Dum’s last year by Dwalin’s count.”

Again you giggled making him chuckle again, “I can’t imagine how relaxing 673 would be. Probably more unsettling than relaxing.”

“Not really. I usually try to name as many of a thing as possible.”

“I can’t imagine how thrilling your family gatherings are with you at the helm.”

Lowly he chuckled trying not to laugh too hard and shift the stones or alert the pair you were not relaxing as planned. “I am rarely at the helm.”

“Pity,”

“Keep teasing and you’ll find yourself at ample.”

“Oh I don’t doubt I’ve been penned into several already even before your threat. Or did you forget how your cousin simply put my name on a ticket and bought me a shirt for this without even you knowing.”

“He truly didn’t want to leave Frodo, I don’t doubt that.”

“Who would want to? Adorable big blue eyes, those curls and adorably big footed little sunflower. I got one hug and I almost didn’t want to let go, so sweet.”

“Do you want kids?”

With a smirk you teased back, “Depends,” that had his head turn to glance your way, “Are you offering or asking for someone else?”

Thorin scoffed and rumbled back with a cracked grin, “I’m asking to ask. Dis wanted one, she’s will having three and four now, Amad wanted seven, was only gifted three, Balin’s wife was told she couldn’t have any, they were blessed a bit ago with their girl.”

“I don’t know. I helped with my sisters, so I’ve successfully minded them for vacations for Naneth when they were toddlers. I could handle the, bad term, but work for it. I don’t know. For Elleth’s it really isn’t uncommon, until you meet someone that sort of lights that, yearning for a nest and a family. I know she was scared when she had me she wouldn’t be able to love me.” That had him look at you again, “Most women face that, I’ve read, when they conceive unwillingly. I don’t harbor resentment for that, I understand, she said the moment of the first flutter she was enamored, fears just melted away. Prayed to the Valar so hard for guidance and strength, then she felt it.”

“I doubt she could have done anything else.”

“So, I don’t know. Though I’d always assumed I’d either have one or a whole herd, no medium ground.”

“You mean middle.” You glanced at him, “The phrase, middle ground.”

“Is it?” he nodded and you turned your head, “Hmm. Very odd. Doesn’t taste right.” Making him smirk in his try not to laugh. “You?”

“Do I taste right?”

It was your turn to giggle but you didn’t and fired back, “Well I haven’t tried, but you certainly haven’t offered permission.”

Again he chuckled and rolled his eyes, “Pebbles, yes, I want pebbles.”

Giggling to yourself you muttered, “Pebbles.” Deepening his smirk, “Suppose you can really say chip off the old block then, huh?”

“Yes, you could.”

“It’s figurative stone, right?”

“Hmm?”

“I mean, and I wouldn’t, but, if I say cut off your arm there wouldn’t be actual stone, in you?”

Again he chuckled and replied, “Elves have a sort of misty, glittery substance, similar to Hobbits’ and our bones are sort of like that. If you looked at an xray of us our bones, sort of, pulse on the image. It seeps into our blood, which inside us, glows.”

“Hmm.”

“I always wanted a big hoard of Pebbles. Even Gran hoped I would, assumed more like.”

“Your Hobbit Gran?”

“Yes.”

“They tend to do that, get a feeling.”

“She had a lot of those.”

“They do. How many Moria’s do you think that was?”

“I think we’re close.”

“Have you been to Moria?”

“Yes, clan insists on it, pay our respects to Durin. You?”

“Couple times with Thranduil,”

“Greenleaf?”

“Yup, art based charity events mostly. Though, and you can’t tell anyone this,” he glanced at you again with an expecting smirk, “I have a jar of Mirromere water.”

Softly he faked a gasp then rumbled back playfully, “So do I. It glows in the moonlight.”

“I’m tempted to add it to my fountain, but I think that might give me away. Legolas actually filled two, just little ones, like travel shot glasses, he was just so small I couldn’t turn him in. So proud of his jar of starlight, just like in the stories.”

“Frerin asked me for my paint jars I’d emptied the day before on our trip, after he’d already taken them. Showed me and Dis later that night, ‘our little secret’ said Durin wouldn’t mind, us being his heirs and all that.”

“Devious Durin boys.” Making him chuckle to himself and steal a glimpse and grin wider seeing you grinning to yourself.

In a hum he replied, “Amad didn’t name me Darer for nothing.” Making you giggle again then fall silent at the door handle turning.

The rocks were removed and coated in a sprits of oils you eyed the pair as they said, “Your nail team is ready if you wanted to get back into your robes.” Claiming the towels the pair brought over your robes and once you were on your feet, and had looped your arms back into your bra straps and eased your arms back into your robe.

In tying your sash again Jo flashed you a grin, “Leg feel better?”

“Yes, thank you.”

His eyes scanned over you and he said, “Well if you need anything, you can call here and ask for us.” You nodded and took in his hinting tone in their joint path to the door not giving you or Thorin a chance to say anything.

Playfully to Thorin, fully blocked from view by his chest you mouthed, “Us,” making him smirk again in the duo of Hobbit ladies wheeling in their pre stocked carts with supplies for the treatments Dwalin had given them over the phone.

Into the lounging seats you were guided at the joint uv equipped tables and from filing, cuticle trimming, buffing a simple base coat was laid beginning the swapping of your green coating to your nails. Thorin however was getting a fuller hand massage ending in the final segment of your nail process with a simpler manicure for his nails finishing just as yours did. A simple layer of lotion came with your being moved over to the pedicure chairs. The one with heavy cushions in it clearly yours enabling you to sit back and relax as Thorin did while being pampered. Simple clear coats were for you both and with some more lotion slicked on and given a moment to settle in you sat chatting about what you might watch while waiting for the dinner you would have to decide on once you got back.

“Seriously, we’re meditating again?”

Thorin couldn’t help but chuckle and run his hand over his eyebrows at your soft whisper after the pair of Hobbits had gone.

“The creams have to soak in.”

“Huh..”

He glanced at you and said, “So you both enjoy and have little patience for being pampered. Intriguing notion.”

“I mean they could leave a puzzle or something. I don’t have much downtime. Even then I have hobbies or chores.”

“You watch tv.”

“Yes but that’s my nestling time. It’s designated do nothing time.”

“We’re meant to clear our minds and relax fully.” Your brow inched up and his grin split wider, “Alright, I can’t stand it either, Dwalin and I usually make up games. I seriously debate on trusting people if they can really clear their minds. Every time I’ve cleared mine it seems like I’m snapped back into every horror film ever and any tiny noise just drives me insane. I need some rambling or elevator music in my head to be calm.”

“Exactly. Naturally silence is more of a trigger for panic than anything. I mean you take nature for instance, you should hear birds or squirrels or tiny little toads, the odd deer and bugs in the woods, lizards and buzzards and sand bunnies and foxes in the dessert. Even in snowy places they have bears and foxes and seals and such. Dead silence means everyone’s watching the big bad guy come down on somebody.”

To himself he chuckled and said, “So, what was running through your mind then in the pedicure?”

“I think I’m gonna order that tree desk and table when I get paid.”

“That’s good.”

“Not really.”

“How so?”

“You know about my father and his family,” he nodded, “Well, I’m the only living heir, legally public one at least. So I inherited everything. Billions, I have, billions, do you have billions?!”

Chuckling thorough his answer he replied, “With a b no, with an m yes. My own inheritance in a trust set up from a relative when I was born. We all got the same amount to help us start.”

“It’s so freaking odd. Just having money.”

“You could buy a car now.”

You pointed at him, “Don’t even, I don’t need to be blowing money. I need to be sensible.”

“How is a car not sensible?”

“I just bought a house! A house! Which I could pay off much sooner...I might double my payments each month maybe...but I think a desk and a table would be an ok start.”

Curiously he asked, “Is it the money or who you got it from?”

“They wouldn’t even let me touch their furniture, now I have the liquidated assets from everything all of them had. Everything Even those fake books with bills and rolls of gold and silver coins tucked inside, full trunk of them the lawyer’s sending my way. More money than I could ever spend.” After a pause you added in a disheartened tone, “Right when I was going to make my own money, build my own little hoard.”

Instantly feeling the meaning of your words he said, “You could start a scholarship fund or something. Or maybe one day you’ll need a wad of cash for a building or, home base for a business venture you might like. You don’t have to touch it if it bothers you.”

“I know.” In a sigh you said, “I know I shouldn’t complain...”

“You have no reason to apologize. I understand, with my family it’s hard to be set apart and find your own stride and wealth, even I have my own funds set apart from my trust. For what you’ve managed alone in spite of their efforts is astounding to say the least. To manage alone, especially in Dwarven territories is spectacular, you have to know that. Please don’t ever apologize for being proud of what you’ve earned on your own. I understand completely. Just, think of better things for now, like dinner,” he said with a smirk at your creeping grin coming back out again.

The pair came back in and aided in your climb down off the recliners saying, “We do hope you feel refreshed and will be able to sleep well for tomorrow’s portion of the expo. We will show you out.”

The same halls wound in reverse finding you back at the lobby staring at the other side of the double doors. Behind the wall again Bo and Jo perked up seeing you again and said, “Sleep well, and if you need anything to help you sleep we’re a call away.”

You nodded and turned, “Will do, and thank you again, for fixing my leg.”

Jo beamed looking you over in your plushy robe and slippers, “Any time.” Holding his expression in the closing of the door behind you that Thorin has opened.

In the hall you smirked turning to take an extra step to be at Thorin’s side. Until you rounded the first corner you held in your giggle, the one that had Thorin looking down at you curiously snapping out of his mental spin at the pair that had been waiting to say goodbye to you. Lowly you whispered, “I wonder what they might have had hidden away to help sleep. Hopefully not more meditations.”

Lowly Thorin chuckled and smiled facing forward again shifting his arm back at your step into his side avoiding a dinner cart with a man who nodded his head and greeted you both kindly. In the next turn he replied, “Probably tapes of whale sounds or something.”

“Great, wailing mammals, that really knocks me out,” You said sarcastically making him chuckle again. Bumping your elbow into his when he brought out his card key for the door he turned his head to find you looking up at him, “Thank you, again.”

“I’m glad even in their flirting you got some help out of it. Your leg feels better?”

Inside the door you raised up on your toes and lowered again bending your leg at the knee and rotating your ankle, “Still a bit sore, but it’s nowhere near at tight as it was. Finally let up. How’s your hip?”

“Hip’s good.”

“Did you want me to try rubbing your leg? Maybe without the meditations and needles it could help.”

“I’ll be fine, can’t have you pay for someone to rub me down then do it yourself.”

“Why not? If you’re in pain and I can help-,”

“It’s sore, that will fade. Focus on dinner Mr Mug Dealer.”

Through a sigh he gave you a plotting narrowed gaze and turned for the smaller couch by the phone he sat down on with the menu on his lap that when you sat down he shifted for you to see as well. At the crossing of your sore leg over the other he smirked and waited through deciding on what you wanted and his calling in the order and the one for breakfast the following morning. While he hung up the phone you turned on the tv at his saying you could choose the channel only to glance at his arm dropping over your crossed legs his hand folded around. Easily they were shifted to lay across his lap and he chuckled to himself at your scoff. “Just can’t help yourself.”

“Or you apparently without a fight.” Easing his palms against the back of your leg feeling where the muscle was a bit tense still but loosening up while he smoothed pressure across it.

“I just realized something,” he said in your shift to lounge sideways easing his task luring your eyes back to him, “That first stop into the shop you said you pulled a stunt at the station, then the next day you said you got put on a new project, I never asked what the project was. Said it came with a raise.”

“You haven’t figured it out yet?” His brow inched up, “You listen to it four days a week.”

His lips parted, “Ah, so you got put on the Bunny show. One of the voice actors? I read online you’ve done voice over before on a show that lasted three seasons, they are in the mail still so I haven’t exactly been able to see what you can do yet.”

To yourself you giggled and said, “That show, ya, wrote, drew and voiced for it.”

“So you’re one of the voice actors?”

“You could say that, ya, one of them.”

Playfully his eyes narrowed at you in his smirk, “I can’t imagine which, they all sound so-,”

“You’d be surprised who I can sound like if I put some practice into it. Could even fool a Dwarf or two with some Khuzdul. Certainly had the time to practice.”

“I bet, especially after learning Raven tongue.”

With the channel the topic changed and it wasn’t till the food had arrived and well into your first glasses of the raspberry wine you dared to try tonight over the last where you stuck to tamer drinks that the topic shifted again.

“Could I ask you something probably a bit painful?”

“Sure, what’s on your mind?” You said lifting your glass to finish the last of it off.

“Growing up we obviously studied the wars, and Ruun came up. There are pictures, it was a deserted junk heap from our view, but you lived there and I’m curious, what was it like?” He said refilling your glass.

“Well, it’s hard to say exactly.”

“No, I understand, I know the carrier attack must have been terrifying, to think back to that time, I shouldn’t have asked.”

“That’s not what I meant.” His eyes snapped to yours from his glass he was reaching for to finish off his own bit of wine washing the taste of regret for asking out of his mouth had been his intention.

“The carrier was sinking, and these arms would just come down out of, I don’t know what to call it, not a drone, but bigger, attached to their own ship and your names would be read and they would decipher who was worth keeping or not. We got thrown into these pitch black tubes, clinging to one another till they tore us out for processing. Cutting our outer robes off us, taking our weapons if we had any, tearing off the sleeves to our tunics and then hurl us into the tagging benches. And my arm was already so badly damaged from the blast,” at the crack in your voice his chest clenched only to see you give a slight shake to your head to keep going. Lost if he should move his chair closer to try and hold one of the hands you were wringing on your lap.

“And they had such little security, so I found a way to try and stop it all. I was so scared of what my Naneth would read about how I was taken and what they might do. I got this idea she could just start over, no me to look to the mailbox for, no reason to look back again. But they found me and they dosed me, the others said we were in that place for weeks, but I woke up in that cage when the shoot opened, falling to the ground.

They had these books on Ruun, mountains looked like, just thousands of them just bleaching in the sun. They would raid libraries and cast the unusable ones on Ruun. And I found this book on Durin the Deathless, in bits and fragments I learned what I could about anything.” A faint grin easing across his lips at your arms rising to cross on the table in front of you marking your returning ease on the subject.

“I would burrow under this large tree in this mini cave I found to sleep since the others wouldn’t let me near their camp without arming themselves. Through the day I would take breaks on the beach between books, you can go three weeks without food, and they would drop it every two weeks. The others got first dibs, but by the first one I found this stretch of land where this seed canister had exploded and there was carrots and wheat and corn. They were small sprouts but I got the encyclopedia on planting and fixed their positions and they just exploded. Wasn’t hard to work up pots and utensils and a makeshift stove. Between planting and reading I had found this typewriter that I worked on, and between working that back into shape and hearing the ocean lapping and reciting old interesting tidbits from the book I met the Countess.”

“She’s real then?” He all but hummed out.

“She was to me. Growing up with laws, no art, no stories, no dreams, then they drop me on that island and it all just exploded. She showed up next to me on the breeze and said,”  At once his grin deepened seeing the glow in your eyes growing and spreading grin with his lips just barely parting as you spoke in the Countess’ voice flawlessly, “‘You look like you need a story. Well have I got one for you Darling.’” Snapping out of the voice his tongue darted out to wet his lips as things started to fall into place for him. “You can learn a lot about someone in 48 years, and she told me it all. From Wolsey and their first meeting, him bleeding every time they met, my comment of my Naneth told me an ounce of blood for an ounce of love and she fired back, ‘Well then Darling I had love by the gallon.’” Again you had flinched in and out of her voice so fluidly it stunned him.

“Your Naneth truly said that? Ounce of blood for an ounce of love?”

“What wouldn’t you sacrifice for the ones you love? She sacrificed and endured for hers.”

“She must be phenomenal if you are in her likeness.” Seeing your bashful blush and hint of glancing away in another sip he asked, “What happened next? With the Countess?”

“After a few months of mental noting of the stories I started to take the bleached books, once the typewriter was fixed, and I would apologize, tearing the pages out to write out the first draft. There were some spots where the old letters and new ones would bleed together, and it always seemed to be in the sad parts, like tear drops. I still have them, and some of the others used to come and double check I wasn’t building weapons or anything but they started to listen to my drafts and word spread I was writing stories. They needed a distraction, and we started to talk. I was more than my name for once.

I got back and I had my typewriter and these stories and every doctor my father sent my way tried to say I had a break with reality, but it was something so much more powerful than that. It’s like, the most vivid daydreams and imaginary friends and worlds. I know they weren’t there, they would pop up and then pop off. And I came home telling my Naneth about these stories and she was so happy, she knew I was ok, a bit sad, but I made it through. So no, other than the crabs trying to run me out of my bed Ruun was fairly amiable of a place, at least for me.”

Seeping in slowly the notion began to settle, and he couldn’t tell if it was the day together or the wine that had eased this truth out of you, but all this time he’d known the elusive Bunny. You had said days prior it was your show that got picked up by Gorgo, hinted to Balin you knew the tale best and seems to be the only one around not reciting or commenting about the show at all.

And it all made perfect sense, you had stolen that first spot of dead air and hooked the world on your tale of freedom. Why the tale was so perfect and fully fleshed out, over 700 years you had perfected it and it showed in every addictive word leaving you hanging on for more. From the moment you landed on that island you realized you were free to find yourself and do as you wished for once, found yourself in a wasteland turned haven by your words. With a pride bolstering hint of help from a book on his ancestors. No doubt those tales had helped to guide your fellow soldiers through the harsh day to day. No doubt the internal explosion you felt enough to have imagined all this up to where you could actually picture them beside you as your very first true friends out for just you and your happiness without any remorse or regrets. You became Bunny on that island, and he had no clue how it had taken him this long to see.

It was casually slipped in, mention of the book, and in a glance at the empty wine bottle he would wait on delving in for details on the book, waiting to see if you remembered telling him, if and when you would show full trust to show him this side of you without being bashful. 800+ years could be borderline passion or obsession, and by the glow in your eyes, joy in your tone and the beaming smile on your face in the fleeting topic he found your balance to his tea.

This could work. He kept reciting it in his head. He had shown his passion and you were easing out yours, tea and a great story go hand in hand and it really did seem dated to be that the day you walked into his life his little shop that had nearly grown stagnant in interest for others had blossomed into so much more. It was more than financial or work based coexistence, there was a true friendship there that could only grow from here, now all he had to do was to be patient and let you in your exuberant yet timid glory come out full tilt as you gained more confidence that you were free. Free to set down roots, to have friends, to choose him if you were so inclined. It had been hinted and boldly stated that you found him attractive and post, still in your robes and undies dinner, off to separate beds you went with a statement to see one another at breakfast.

It was the most grueling thing to say goodnight with that natural candlelit glow reflecting off you and your tipsy adoring smile being sent his way he no doubt was a beet red idiot beaming right back. But he had to wait and not allow himself to ruin your friendship by taking advantage of you being alone or ever making you assume anything physical was his intention in bringing you here.

Sprawled across his bed he couldn’t stop thinking about the nonexistent candles you put to shame. You were glowing, sparkling ever so slightly like moonlit snow and his brain just equated it to candle light he clearly hadn’t noticed wasn’t there. He hated hearing about Elves glowing. Expecting mothers glowed, giggling babies glowed, that was true, but from years of hearing Frerin then the boys in their dabbles with Elves in their dating lives he had heard way too much about this fabled glow blissful Elves gave off. Even Hobbits seemed to have their own aura of loveliness according to Dwalin, a fact he knew to be true seeing his Hobbit relatives and most recently his love struck cousin and soon to be cousin in law and young nephew he absolutely adored as well. Dams were also said to glow when in love, but deep in his pit of denial for years he loathed hearing about a glow he never saw on his ex who clearly had her muffin boy to glow for while all he got was her shrewd left overs.

Yet staring up at the ceiling all his mind could circle on was how unabashedly ethereal you looked in that light shimmering and radiating off your exposed bits of skin under that plushy robe and your equally as radiant hair slipping free from its messy bun just beckoning him to tie it back into as many braids as his heart desired. And damnit all didn’t he ache to have that sight of you like that across the table from him each morning and night. All his, for no one else, decades eased before his eyes in leaving his robe at the foot of the bed he crawled into ignorant of the stiffness underneath him with the clouds he was floating on to be in the presence of an angel like you.

Contently sighing you sat on your bed you had just pulled the covers back on and turned with lips pursed a moment in search of your ringing phone you brought out of your pocket. A grin eased across your face as you answered your friend’s call. “Millie Mal! There you are!”

Blinking in confusion at the nickname Mal shifted on her bench of her vanity as if there had been another she could share an odd expression with, bolstering her former point she wet her lips saying, “What is this I hear that you’re in Rohan?! From my uncle of all people in passing through my shift at the shop.”

“Well Dwalin planned it.”

“My point being, you’re in Rohan with Thorin and you didn’t tell me! You’ve been there a night already, now on your second and this is the first I am hearing of it! Now you spill everything.”

“I didn’t plan it. Not much to tell, other than I go for tea, and there’s a ticket with my name on it and Dwalin gave me the shirt and then I have luggage now, with these cute phrases on them and white corners and handles, oh you have to see them! There was the plane then a long drive over a lake into this mountain and the walls here are aquariums, the beds are dreadful but I suppose Men have their flimsy bones to protect...and these fish keep staring at me. Why do fish always stare at me,” you rambled not realizing your natural glow and shimmer had grown as you were closer to dozing off.

“Jaqi are you drunk? You don’t drink and you sound drunk.”

“No, if I were drunk I would be naked. I’m in my underwear, and this robe, it’s so soft I think I’m gonna keep it, they’re gonna charge fifty for it but it’s got fish on it and Thorin keeps trying to encourage me to shop. Not a fan of the slippers though, but they are a set I suppose.”

“Where is Thorin?”

“He’s in bed.”

“With you?!”

“No, there’s another one, that way.” You said pointing in clearly the wrong direction by mistake haven climbed into the bed on the opposite side from the night before.

“Jaqi go to sleep.”

“But we’re talking, and you sound like you’re pretty tonight. Fixed your hair or something..”

Mal trying not to cry while grinning at her actually having fixed her hair for herself in a fancy braid that night her fingers smoothed over as it laid across her chest feeling accomplished at having mastered the style from a video online. Saying again, “Jaqi go to bed I’ll text you tomorrow.”

“Ok, night night pretty lady.” You said laying out across the bed stretching out your legs with eyes easing shut already in your body wiggling out of the open robe.

Giggling her reply she said, “Goodnight yourself, lovely lady.” Hanging up at your content sigh turning to glance at her mirror again she stole a few more pictures of the style she had told the boys about and would send to them tomorrow when they were off their flight.

Not Lost But Still Found

Chloe shuffled into the living room and lifted an oversized gray hoodie off the back of the couch. She sniffed it and scrunched her nose at the less than pleasant odor. “Is this yours or mine?”

Nino cracked open one eye from his prone position on the couch and squinted at the article of clothing. “I don’t know. I think I wore it the other day though. I spilled ketchup on it from a burger.”

She scratched at the dried stain on the arm. “Yeah, I saw that when I put it on last night to go meet the Uber Eats guy downstairs because it was sitting here and my room seemed too far away.” She shrugged the hoodie on with a sigh. “It doesn’t smell great.”

“Mmm.”

She lifted his legs and sunk into the couch beneath them and then let them drop back onto her lap. “What are you watching?”

“Some home design show.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know where the remote is.”

“Ah.”

They watched three episodes of contractors finding surprise expenses in remodels before Chloe stirred again. “This is pathetic.”

“I know. Even only half done, their place is better than ours,” Nino replied.

She popped his knee. “No, I mean us. We’re pathetic.”

“Well, my fiance called off our engagement two days before the wedding since she’d fallen in love with someone else and you got fired from your dream job so I’d say we’re allowed to be pathetic.” He reached up to pull the bill of his hat down over his face. “I’m going to take a nap.”

“Nino, that was a month ago. Wait, almost two months ago now.”

“Yet it hurts like it was yesterday,” he muttered. “Amazing.”

“And yeah, it sucks about my job but obviously I’ll find another one. That stupid Claire isn’t going to be the end of me just because she stole my client list and spread rumors about bad business practices. I’m fabulous and everyone knows it.” She attempted to flip her ponytail and felt how stringy her hair was. “At least I used to be fabulous.” She slouched back and groaned. “Who I am kidding? No one is going to hire me as a personal style consultant now. I’m sitting here in a smelly hoodie and I’m not even sure if it’s mine. I’ve lost my mojo.”

“Maybe it’s hiding wherever mine is.” Nino lifted his hat and tossed it on the coffee table. “And maybe we have been sadsacks lately.”

“You think?”

“I’m never going to know love again but I guess I should try to smile more.”

Chloe narrowed her eyes. “Victoria was a heinous bitch and I warned you about her before you gave her that ridiculous ring, just to set the record straight.”

“It really is your gentle kindness that keeps this friendship alive, Chlo.”

“She told you we couldn’t be roommates or friends anymore because I obviously can’t keep my hands off you even though that’s never been an issue with us. That was red flag number one. Well, no. That awful shade of coral lipstick she always wore was definitely the first flag, but--”

“Good to know I’m as unattractive as I thought.”

“Oh, hush. You know that isn’t what I meant.”

Nino dropped his legs off her lap and stood with a grunt. “I don’t wanna talk about Victoria. I’m going to go lay down.”

“You were literally just lying down.”

“Well, now I’m going to go lay down in my bed.” 

Chloe stood and followed him into his room even after he gave her a pointed glare when she crawled up beside him in the bed and turned on the lamp on his nightstand. “We can’t keep wallowing, Nino.”

He took off his glasses and handed them to her. “I can. You’re free to do whatever it is you want to do.” He sighed and turned on his side away from her. “I just don’t have it in me right now, okay? Please just let me...just let me be.”

She exhaled softly and slid out of the bed. “Okay. Take your time.” She set his glasses on the nightstand, turned the light back off, and closed his door as she left.

“I hope you’ve had enough time,” Chloe said as she threw open the curtains covering Nino’s bedroom window the next morning.

He swore and buried himself deeper under the covers. “What the hell, Chloe?!”

“I’ve been up for hours getting myself back into shape as much as I could here, but now we need to go out so I can finish and you can start.” She smoothed her hand down her sleek hair that hung just below her shoulders. “I think I need a new look for the new me and I want to do the same for you.” She saw a golden brown eye peek out from a hole in the mass of blanket. It squinted and then Nino was emerging reluctantly and grabbing for his glasses on the nightstand. 

“You showered,” he said with a slow blink.

“This isn’t the first time I’ve showered, you know,” Chloe sniffed. “But yes, probably the first time this week so I understand the surprise.”

“And you’re wearing makeup and clothes that actually fit.”

“Again, thank you for stating the obvious. On that note, we desperately need to do laundry later.”

He sat up and scratched his head absently. “What are you wanting to do?”

“I’ve called and set up appointments for us at the salon and spa in an hour. I had to pull some strings but we deserve the best of the best.”

“I can’t afford the best of the best right now.”

She smiled sweetly. “Daddy can.”

“I don’t like using your dad’s credit card. You know that. We aren’t kids anymore.”

“Oh please, it’s fine, I promise. He’ll be thrilled to see it being used for something other than take-out. He’s been begging me to get out of this apartment.”

“I don’t really want a haircut.”

“Well, you need one. You look scrappy and not in a hot way.”

“I’m not trying to impress anybody.”

She quirked an eyebrow. “And that, Mr. Lahiffe, is problem number one. Now, go get in the shower and I’ll see if I can find anything halfway presentable in your closet for you to wear until we can get you something better.”

“What do you mean better?” he asked warily.

Chloe grabbed the edge of the blanket and ripped it off the bed. “Go. Now.”

He rolled off the bed, grumbling under his breath the whole way to the bathroom. Chloe nodded in satisfaction when she heard the shower turn on and then moved to his closet with a scoff of disgust.

“I feel ridiculous. Why do I need to be so dressed up to get a haircut?” Nino tugged on the collar of his shirt and Chloe pulled his hand back down. 

“Stop. And it isn’t just a haircut. We’re getting the works: facials, massages, skincare treatments. We’ll get fluffy robes to wear and comfy slippers and it will be so wonderful.”

“Then why do I have to be dressed like this?”

“Because it’s all about image.” She straightened and rolled her shoulders back.  “You deserve to be pampered and you know it.”

“Is that what you told your clients?” he asked, keeping in step with her as they neared the salon.

“Mostly.”

He nodded. “So I’m going to get the personal style consultant Chloe Bourgeois treatment today, huh? I feel honored.” He was surprised to see her cheek go pink.

“I just thought it might be a nice way to ease back into things,” she admitted.  “And I also thought you could use the day out. I know I can.”

Though spending an entire day being touched and prodded by strangers and trying to make forced polite conversation sounded in no way appealing, Nino smiled down at his roommate. “Thanks.”

“Can I tell you something I haven’t admitted to anyone else yet?” Nino asked. His voice was hushed as they lounged in the reclining chairs of the waiting room while their mud baths were being prepared.

Chloe rolled her head lazily to the side and looked at him with one eye. “Mmhmm.”

“I knew Victoria was cheating on me before I caught her in front of Adrien.”

She opened both eyes and sat up so she could lean closer to him.  “What?”

Nino dropped his gaze to his lap and twisted his hands into the ends of the sash of his robe. “She wasn’t exactly stealthy. I don’t think she was really even trying to hide it, but I never confronted her and she never said anything so I just...” He exhaled and it was a long, tired sound. “And then when Adrien and I went back to the apartment to grab some of the wedding stuff and she was there with that other guy in our bed...” He shook his head. “I couldn’t keep ignoring it.”

“If Adrien hadn’t been with you, what do you think you would’ve done?”

He dared a quick look at her. “Are you asking if I still would’ve married her?”

Chloe nodded, pursing her lips.

“I don’t know. Probably.”

“Good grief, why?”

He was quiet for a long time as the spa music played softly around them. “I guess it just felt nice to feel loved and I wasn’t sure if I would get the chance again.”

“Nino Lahiffe, if that’s supposed to mean you aren’t a catch or something equally absurd, I’m going to smack you.”

“Do you think they’re going to take us back soon? I feel weird sitting here in just a robe.”

“Don’t try to change the subject,” she demanded. “You’re great and I won’t let you say anything less about yourself.”

“You’re just saying that because you’re my roommate.”

“That’s another thing. Do you think I would live with you if I didn’t believe it? I deserve the absolute best. I’m saying it because it’s the truth and I’m your friend,” she corrected. “Your best friend actually. Adrien can take a backseat because we both know it’s true.”

“Wow, you look...” Nino trailed off and shook his head as he stared at Chloe. “I really love the new hair.”

She bit her lip and reached up to let her hand hover beside her head. “It’s a little shorter than I was thinking. i’m not sure how I feel about it.”

“You look really pretty,” he assured her. “I think it’s a perfect new look for new you.”

Chloe straightened and look in the mirror. “It is perfect, isn’t it?” She lifted her chin and nodded in his direction. “And now for you. Anthony, please work your magic on my sweet but clueless roommate. He doesn’t realize how gorgeous he is. Look at what’s he let happen to his hair.”

The stylist clucked his tongue and moved behind the styling chair, spinning it to face the mirror. “I would literally kill him for his eyelashes. Lift them right off his face and prance off to the club to get me a new love.”

Nino grimaced at Chloe in the reflection and she stifled a laugh. “I think I’d have to fight you, Anthony. I like them just where they are.” And suddenly it was Nino’s turn to blush.

Nino tried to busy himself with reading labels on the many products lining the shelves of the nail portion of the salon. Chloe insisted he get a pedicure and manicure and he had to admit they’d both been enjoyable with her at the station next to him. She’d gossiped with the technicians like old friends and for the first time in months, he saw the spark of real happiness shining through her eyes when she looked over to smile at him.

Leaving no stone unturned, she was currently sitting at a vanity station and having her makeup professionally done so Nino was doing his best to stay out of the way and not look too bored. He didn’t initially mean to eavesdrop on her conversation with the makeup artist but now he was straining to hear their words while seeming to concentrate much too hard on the ingredients list of a  bottle of moisturizer.

“It isn’t like that between us,” Chloe said. “We’ve been friends since we were kids.”

“So what? Sweetie, I’m looking at him and you’ve got to get with that. Your palettes are made for each other. I can see the pictures now and they would be fabulous. Is there some rule I don’t know about that says you can’t date him? Close your eyes.”

Nino had to keep himself from glancing back at the women but he shifted a little closer and picked up another bottle to pretend to study. 

Chloe’s voice was much lower when she spoke again and Nino held his breath as he tried to listen. “He knew me back when I was...I wasn’t always...” She scoffed. “I just don’t think he’d see me that way and honestly, it’s fine. I’ve got more prospects than I know what to do with.”

“Hell yeah, girl. And even more when I’m through with you. Oh! I can’t believe we haven’t talked about this yet but did you see the pants Anthony is trying to pull off today? I might hire you just to help the poor man.” 

Nino set the bottle back on the shelf and moved further away from them. Chloe’s words bothered him. Did she really think he still thought of her the way she was when they were younger? She’d changed so much; they both had. It wasn’t fair to put that on him. The people they were back in their younger school days would never be as close as they are today.

He wasn’t sure how much time had passed when he heard a familiar throat clearing and turned around to see his roommate giving him an expectant look. 

“Well?” Chloe prompted as she raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms. “Am I absolutely gorgeous?”

Nino took in the smooth lipstick and dark eyeliner and thought about how nice she also looked in the bumblebee pajamas she liked to wear around their apartment. “You always are.”

“Please don’t make me go to another store,” Nino groaned. “I’m so tired.”

“Don’t be a baby,” Chloe huffed as they were chauffeured down the street. 

“I’m not being a baby. We’ve been going all day and I’m exhausted and I now own clothes I never imagined owning and I don’t know what to do about it.”

“I think you’re trying to say thank you.”

He chuckled and looked at her. “Are you really wanting to go more places?”

“Just one and then we’ll get dinner.”

“Chloe...”

“Just one,” she insisted. “Sit back and shut your eyes and we’ll be there soon.”

“The things I do for you,” he sighed dramatically.

They rode in comfortable silence to their next destination and Chloe roused Nino from the light doze he’d fallen into. “Come on, we’re here.”

He blinked and opened his door to look up at the brightly lit sign of his favorite music store. “What are we doing here?”

She rounded the car and hooked her arm through his. “You did a lot of things I like today so now we’re going to do something you like.”

Nino couldn’t put his finger on what it was but something definitely felt different by the time they dragged themselves into the apartment that night. It made him feel uncertain how to act but then Chloe dumped her keys and purse by the door like she always did and the universe shifted back into its comfortable place. 

“We can go through all our stuff in the morning,” she said with a wave of her hand after dropping her shopping bags on the couch. “You can wear that blue suit with the gray shirt tomorrow.”

“We aren’t doing this again tomorrow, are we? I don’t know if I--” Nino’s words were cut off when Chloe unceremoniously shoved two fingers against his lips.

“You don’t have to if you don’t want to, but I’m going to go back to my old stomping grounds and round up some clients again because I’m ready to kick ass. I’d like your help if you have the time.”

He reached for her wrist to pull her hand down but found it hard to release it. “I have the time,” he said softly. 

They stared at each other and Chloe’s breath hitched in her throat. Electricity surged between them and then Chloe’s phone began to vibrate in her other hand and the spell was broken. He let go of her wrist and she stepped back quickly and answered her phone with a breathless greeting.

Nino swallowed hard and gave her a wave before retreating back into his room. The universe he shared with Chloe teetered on the edge of the unknown for a moment and then became still again, not quite back in place but not falling yet.

20. A Massage AND  2. A Hot Kiss

Kagome sighed in bliss as the massage therapist pushed down on a particularly hard knot in her in the middle of her back. It had been forever since she’d had a massage, and she could kiss Sango and Miroku for buying her and Inuyasha this massage treatment at a couple’s retreat spa as a wedding present. Well, maybe not Miroku. She turned her head to smile at Inuyasha across from her on an identical table. 

It had taken some coaxing from her to agree to the idea of some woman other than her touching him. The champagne and strawberries left for them in the room beforehand had gone a little way towards calming his nerves, and now look at him. Sprawled on the massage table, ears twitching in bliss as the masseuse pushed her elbows into a painful spot underneath his left shoulder blade. They’d asked for non-scented oil, so he didn’t have to worry about the scent overpowering his sensitive nose, and they’d turned the ‘wind through the bamboo forest’ soundtrack down low. She wanted to grin at how comfortable he looked, and she did.

“What’s so funny Kagome?” he slurred, one eye opening to look at her.

“You are, Mr. I Don’t Think I’d Feel Comfortable Having A Massage”, she grinned.

The masseuses moved towards the top of each table, finishing with a head massage for each of them which had Kagome and Inuyasha both groaning. Kagome’s masseuse tapped her shoulder gently.

“All done Mrs. Takahashi”, she said softly. “Your warmed yukatas are waiting on the chair near the door. Complimentary snacks will be brought up to your room in half an hour.”

“Thank you so much” murmured Kagome sleepily. “This was so nice.”

“You’re very welcome”, the masseuse smiled. Kagome heard the opening and closing of the door to the massage room, and opened her eyes again to look at Inuyasha, his golden eyes watching her from the other table. 

“I’m still not used ta hearin’ that.”

“Hmmm?”

“People calling you Mrs. Takahashi. I like it, I like it a lot.”

“So do I”, purred Kagome, stretching her muscles before she sat up. The small towel covering her drooped down, and the white haired half demon sighed, propping his head up in his palm, as he half reclined on the table. 

“I see somethin’ else I like a lot Mrs. Takahashi.”

“Oh really, Mr Takahashi. Care to come over here and tell me what that is?”

“Nah, I’m too comfy. I don’t think I can get up off this table to be honest. Everything feels like jelly.”

“Oh dear”, murmured Kagome in fake distress as she shifted off the table and sauntered over to the yukatas, dropping the towel behind her, “whatever shall I do? Little ol’ me, a newly married woman, with a husband who can’t ‘get up’?”

A sudden breeze was the only warning she had before her naked chest was pushed up against the door of the massage room. 

“Here’s somethin’ you might wanna know about bein’ married to a half demon”, Inuyasha murmured, palms flat to the door either side of Kagome’s head, his nose nuzzling into the back of her neck, appreciating the access to his wife’s soft skin while her hair was piled up high on her head in a messy bun. “We have excellent recovery time.”

Kagome turned, wrapping her arms around her husband’s neck. “Hallelujah”, she whispered, small teeth biting down on her bottom lip, “my very own miracle.”

“I aim to please Mrs. Takahashi”, Inuyasha grinned.

“Oh, I’m counting on it”, she replied. 

Inuyasha’s mouth dropped to hers, warm lips eager to close the separation between them. At first the kiss was soft, playful, until Kagome bit down on Inuyasha’s bottom lip. Suddenly the kiss became frantic, tongues dancing, heat rising between them. Kagome’s hands buried themselves into Inuyasha’s long mane of hair, tugging a fistful as she went up on tiptoe, desperate to be closer. Inuyasha’s hands glided down over shoulders, fingers following her spine downwards until he grasped her hips firmly. He pushed her backwards, wanting to take everything she’d give. Kagome’s head thudded onto the back of the door, eliciting a soft apology from her husband as he rubbed and cradled the back of her head, then dipped his head, ready to plunder the warmth of her mouth again. 

Tap, tap, tap.

“Excuse me Mr and Mrs Takahashi, but I need to prep the room for the next couple. Will you be long?”

“We’ll be right out”, called out Inuyasha, silencing his wife’s embarassed giggle with a final smooch, helping her into her yukata, then shrugging on his own.

“Time to go Mrs. Takahashi”, he teased, tugging her hand as they passed the amused masseuse. “I do believe I was promised a snack in our room, and I’ve built up quite the appetite.”

NAPA VALLEY, NOVEMBER 2020:

Our Trip: We did 5 nights. Flew into SFO, drove to St. Helena for 2 nights, spent 2 nights in Yountville, then an overnight in Sausalito before a flight out the next day. If I did it over, I would spend 2 nights in Sausalito, too. On the drive from SFO to St. Helena, we stopped for lunch at Oxbow Public Market (highly recommend – lots of fun to walk around the different venders and really good food – we ate at Hog Island Oyster Bar – excellent food, nice sitting outside on the patio looking out at the valley.

Because we were there for a short time and because we wanted to get a big bang for our buck, we visited (and did tastings) at 4 wineries each day! It was a lot but also a lot of fun! We rented bikes and biked around all day – didn’t drive. I’d recommend electric bikes. We had regular bikes which was fine, but e-bikes would make the biking between wineries much easier/faster/relaxing.

I used this website to find wineries and also relied heavily on recommendations from friends. The website shows you all the Napa Valley wineries, and you can filter on type of wine, which have tastings (by appointment only vs. walk-in), etc.

St. Helena

Hotel: Harvest Inn – beautiful setting right among the vineyards, we enjoyed walking the grounds. Each room is kind of like its own little cottage. Very quaint, good location, hot tub was nice way to unwind after drinking wine all day 😊. The hotel has discounts and free tastings at some of the neighboring wineries.

Bike Rentals: St. Helena Cyclery

Wineries:

• Rombauer – Beautiful scenery up on a hill, great tasting, pretty garden to walk through, fantastic staff and service.

• Duckhorn – One of our favorites, did a little food tasting pairing cheese and snacks with the wine tasting! Highly recommend! Gorgeous grounds. And great swag shop.

• Prisoner – more new-age which was a cool change of pace. The wines were incredible (and they gave us a lot of wine), but the environment/setting wasn’t anything super special compared to the others. Didn’t get to go inside because of covid, so maybe the inside is a more special setting. Of the 4 St. Helena wineries we visited, this was the least special.

• HALL Wines – This place was just spectacular! An amazing way to end the day as the sun was starting to set. Set facing the hills of St. Helena, the gardens and vineyard fields are gorgeous and just an incredibly relaxing and beautiful setting. Great service!

Breakfast: Station, The Model Bakery

Lunch: Gott’s Roadside Eats (beautiful setting, casual burgers and awesome milkshakes – good hearty meal when you’re slamming wine all day).

Dinner: Harvest Table (at Harvest Inn), Cook St. Helena (amazing authentic Italian spot!)



Sonoma

Hot Air Balloon: We had ours scheduled for St. Helena / Yountville area, but due to weather it got cancelled so we audibled to Sonoma (drove there for a half day).

Wineries: La Crema – Another one of our favorites! Really nice setting right among the vineyards, had the coolest server who treated us great, and we shipped some cases of wine home! Only place we ended up buying wine from – super tasty and had good Black Friday deals 😊.

Yountville

Hotel: Hotel Yountville – Luxurious!!! So so comfortable and over the top nice! Amazing pool area next to the spa (great massages). Rooms are top notch – everything was amazing! So glad we stayed here second as it was a significant step up from Harvest Inn which was already really nice. The hotel had complementary bikes for us to use, too.

Wineries:

• Silverado Vineyards – Absolutely EPIC! The estate house is set way up high on a hill with an amazing view overlooking the valley. We did a paired food (snack) and Cabernet tasting which was awesome! Amazing wines!

• Robert Sinskey Vineyards – Just down the road from Silverado. A newer-age, organic winery, but super cool. Very neat estate house with a great patio also overlooking the valley. I walked by a mother-daughter duo wearing a Cardinals hat and said “Go Cards!” to them. Ended up talking for a bit about our mutual love for the Cardinals, and she was a wine club member, so she said Bridgette and I were her “guests” so we got our tasting on the house!

• Robert Mondavi – We had an incredible (and surprising) experience here! The facilities and everything about Robert Mondavi were grand and beautiful. We did a winery tour first which was awesome (highly recommend), then I had booked a lunch tasting. Somehow (I’m not sure how), I had booked this private lunch that apparently they don’t do all the time. We were seated JUST US in this beautiful private garden, where the chefs harvest fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs for their restaurant. Then we were waited on hand and foot while having the most elegant lunch and rare, delicious wines – all at this single table intimately set for two in the garden. The chef even came out and spoke to us. It was called the Vineyard to Table Lunch and we were sitting in the Margrit Mondavi Vineyard Room Patio (I took a picture of this elegant lunch menu from that day). I have no idea how we just sort of happened into this one, but it was incredible. Highly recommend trying to do something like this!

• Stag’s Leap – We weren’t able to get a reservation here, so we didn’t go, but I’ve heard it’s awesome.

• Chandon – Ended up cancelling our reservation there to have some downtime at the hotel before dinner after our two tastings, but I think they had a fun Happy Hour thing (maybe live music) that we were excited about – could check it out!

Breakfast: at hotel

Lunch: Robert Mondavi Winery, French Laundry (we didn’t go, but it’s super famous and right in Yountville)

Dinner: Lucy – Incredible, luxurious food and ambiance in the hip Bardessono hotel! We did our Thanksgiving dinner here and it was memorable!

Sausalito

Hotel: Cavallo Point Sausalito – We stayed here as a sort of stop over on the way back to the airport from Napa Valley. Really wish we had spent a couple days here! The town of Sausalito is nearby and it is super cute – almost reminds me of the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The hotel is nestled at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. Old school, but still nice, quaint rooms – almost reminded me of Nantucket. We ate dinner and breakfast the next morning at the hotel – really tasty. Before flying out that afternoon, we rented these cool retro electric bikes and cruised up onto the Golden Gate Bridge and near the harbor for an epic view. Highly recommend staying here and exploring Sausalito vs. staying in San Francisco – very relaxing and fun.
