Baroque Frames & their Modern Reproductions
(Photo 1) Canaletto, Capriccio: ruined bridges with figures, 1745-

The paintings displayed in Photo 1 were both obtained in 1869 by Canaletto. After their acquisition, one of the paintings was placed in an ornate 'Kent'-style frame, which included an inlay to adjust for size differences. The other painting, however, was framed in a sympathetic Louis XIV-style frame, intricately carved and gilded. Unfortunately, there are no available records indicating when or why these specific frames were selected.
When preparing for the redisplay of these artworks in the Europe 1600-1815 Galleries, a decision was made to replicate the more suitable French frame. To accomplish this, a skilled framemaker was commissioned to create a carved wooden frame that closely resembled the original, and it was then gilded to match the existing finish.
