Akira Ifukube (Naoki Satō) - Godzilla Minus One - Godzilla Suite II 2023

Godzilla Minus One is a 2023 Japanese epic kaiju film written, directed, and with visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki. It won Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, becoming the first non-English language film to do so. It was the first Godzilla film to be nominated for an Academy Award, as well as the first Japanese film ever to receive a nomination in the Best Visual Effects category.

The score is composed by Naoki Satō, but also contains re-recorded pieces from several Godzilla movies composed by Akira Ifukube; a three-part 10-minute "Godzilla Suite" comprising new recordings of music from classic Ifukube Godzilla scores, including the famous 1954 march, plus brief references to King Kong vs Godzilla from 1962, Mothra vs Godzilla from 1964, and Godzilla vs Destroyah from 1995. These tracks are mostly used as underscore in the major battle sequences, such as Godzilla's first attack on Tokyo, and then again during the final battle. The soundtrack won Best Original Score for a Fantasy/Science Fiction Film at the 2024 International Film Music Critics Association Awards.

EXCLUSIVE: Rosanna Arquette (Pulp Fiction, Desperately Seeking Susan), Alexander Skarsgård (The Northman, Big Little Lies) and Trew Mullen (Blink Twice) have joined the cast of the @Charli_xcx-led and produced film “The Moment” from @A24, sources tell Deadline. Details regarding their characters are under wraps.

The mockumentary feature film follows the life of a pop star in the lead-up to her first headline arena tour. The Moment gives an inside look at the inner workings of the music industry and explores how subculture is mutated by commercial success.

Arquette is said to be playing a record label boss, Skarsgård as a fashionable European creative and Mullen as xcx’s personal assistant.

A24 declined to comment.

Emmy Award-winner Skarsgard will next appear in the Apple TV+ series Murderbot, premiering on May 16. He will portray the titular sentient security android. In December, he surprised fans of his popular HBO series True Blood by bringing back his character Eric Northman in the final season of FX’s comedy series What We Do in the Shadows. king kong thoughts all in one place including an explanation as to why i hate him all very unedited

okay obviously king kong has issues with a giant gorilla kidnapping a blonde white woman but this isn't about that this is about my own petty reasons.

i mostly don't really give a shit about king kong when he's by himself. i saw the original movie and it was just okay. i said i wouldn't talk about the racism i said i wouldn't talk about the racism i said i wouldn't talk about the racism- okay i reviewed the original movie a while back and my overall thoughts were pretty neutral. i don't know if it deserved to be a classic but it wasn't the worst thing i've ever seen.

but no, my problems with the monkey are really only an issue when he's put next to godzilla. AND THIS ISN'T JUST ME BEING UPSET HE BEAT GOJI IN THE ORIGINAL KING KONG VS GODZILLA EVEN THOUGH HE SHOULDN'T HAVE

anyway here are the parts of that movie's review that mention kong

now i'm not gonna say characters can't evolve over time but i really don't like how kong evolved. i mean obviously i do in some respects. the monsterverse movies are less racist for example. wait shit i said i wouldn't talk about the racism.

anyway, by reimagining him as someone who can stand up against and even defeat godzilla this movie pushed him in the direction of the modern monsterverse kong who i probably hate the most.

kong's first crossover with godzilla in the monsterverse was in godzilla vs kong, where godzilla beat him and left him to die (yay) only for him to be saved by the humans (aw). that's not my issue. i liked watching them fight, but that's mostly because i like godzilla. but the movie treats kong as almost a protagonist. like. because he's a gorilla and gorillas are smart. ok. but this leads into basically the entire plot being mostly about him, with godzilla's side of the story being propped up by one-note human characters.

and like that's an issue with all the monsterverse movies but that's another discussion. humans in godzilla movies can be great or they can be detrimental it all depends on the characters and the overall tone. but whatever.

godzilla x kong takes what gvk did and runs it into the ground. in gxk kong is basically a fucking superhero and the entire plot is about him. godzilla spends most of the movie "powering up" and doesn't really have much consequence until the end. he has some lore surrounding him and the antagonist, but really all it does is tell the viewer that godzilla beat them in the past, which makes one wonder why kong is necessary to do that again? whatever. all you need to know is that while kong is fighting monsters in his ancient homeland fighting to uncover the mysteries of his ancestors, godzilla is beating a random sea serpent (that isn't even manda) so he can absorb some vague power source. it's been a minute since i saw the movie.

and the next movie is also gonna be a gxk movie so they're combining them for the foreseeable future which frustrates me. because these crossovers came after the new king of the monsters movie which was fucking cool as shit. they got to use the actual music, the credits song was an orchestral version of the godzilla song, king ghidorah, rodan, and mothra were in it, there's a legendary version of burning godzilla, it was honestly so hype when i saw it. absolutely the best monsterverse movie.

so it really sucked when they merged the ips and brought goji down to kong's level. which brought my "i don't care about king kong" perspective to "i fucking hate king kong"

he's a lesser character that gets more development and effort put in and pushes goji off to the wayside. even in the justice league crossover godzilla just got chained to the bottom of the ocean for a while. superman also got taken out of commission for a bit so while i liked that story it really wasn't my day for favorite characters.

i see king kong and i don't see a living icon, a classic movie monster who's still around, i see an ip that's been rebooted in a less impactful way and owes most of his popularity to donkey kong.

and honestly nothing describes my feelings for him better than the opening credits of gvk

towards the end it has this buildup, with each of them defeating monsters, treating them as stepping stones towards this ultimate battle.

THE PROBLEM is that you have godzilla beating all these iconic monsters. the mutos, king fucking ghidorah, and then king kong just has a couple skull crawlers. there's only one that they even find interesting enough to show in full. it's just embarrassing. kong is completely outclassed and even the movie knows it but they're gonna pretend they don't. kong only even stands a chance because he gets an anti-godzilla axe and then he still loses.

kong is BORING. and him being around godzilla makes him boring too. i couldn't even really be invested in the big fight in gxk because it was just so kong focused.

Kaiju Week in Review (March 17-23, 2024)

Mere days to go before a new Godzilla movie... didn't we just do this?

Before we welcome that latest entry, let's look back on one that just commemorated its golden anniversary. With Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla turning 50 on March 21, every member of Toho's Big Five has now hit the half-century mark. The company didn't mark the day itself with much; as has become typical, the celebration of Mechagodzilla (and presumably King Caesar) will be spread throughout the year. I wrote a bit about the magnificent machine, who I consider the best Godzilla antagonist, here. The film itself is one of Teruyoshi Nakano's masterpieces, an onslaught of animated rays and gorgeous explosions. The humans are forgettable, but they keep the pace brisk—and the alien commander Mugal is almost as devilish a villain as Mechagodzilla itself, especially in the English dub. Speaking of that dub, you can watch a video breaking down the entire voice cast here, thanks to the tireless work of the Save All Dubs! group.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #6 finally gets to the good stuff, with Lex Luthor piloting Mechagodzilla and commanding an army of Titans to raze Metropolis while the heroes counter with not one but two giant robots. It doesn't quite measure up to the Godzilla: Rulers of Earth finale, but like that double-sized issue, it required two artists (Christian Duce joined by Tom Derenick) to draw all those characters, and the results are impressive. The story hasn't grown any more complex, but I'm at least interested to see how it all wraps up.

In other Godzilla comic news, a Godziban manga by Sakuju Koizumi has started up, hosted by Telemaga, a tokusatsu-focused Kodansha site. The first installment was pretty short, so I'm guessing these'll be updated weekly. It isn't the first comic version of Godziban, as one called Godziman ran during the 1st Season, but this one's actually illustrated.

Tokyo's Ikebukuro district made Godzilla the honorary chief of police on March 16 to take part in a parade promoting traffic safety. The stunt made international headlines and generated no small amount of angst over Cop Godzilla. I think Gamera would've been better-suited to this campaign myself.

Here's the trailer for Season 2 of Chibi Godzilla Raids Again, revealing Gabara, Gigan, and Titanosaurus's designs. Looks as funny as the first one. Maaya Uchida, who sang the ending songs in SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon, will voice Chibi Minilla. It's gone weirdly neglected by English Godzilla social media accounts, but X user @MakoMattari translated it.

The Music Box Theatre in Chicago has a Godzilla program for the ages scheduled for June 7-13, in honor of his 70th birthday. There's not a weak day on the schedule, but the clear highlight is a 24-hour marathon of the entire Showa series on the 8th, which I don't think has ever been attempted before.

G-Fest has also started announcing guests: Ayako Fujitani (Asagi in the Heisei Gamera trilogy) and Rie Ota (Baragon in GMK), both first-timers. Frankly, they could carry the con themselves if they have to; not sure who I'm more excited to meet!

I hope Toho sues you, also way to miss the point of Godzilla. Godzilla is not some innocent victim who got turned radioactive by human error. Godzilla is an allegory for the nuclear bomb, his reaction should be more akin to "YOU FUCKED AROUND AND FOUND OUT MOTHERFUCKERS"

Mothra and Godzilla are ALLIES you stupid fuck! They have only fought in two movies, and I guess since this musical is an adaptation of multiple Godzilla movies from the Showa Era, does that mean Godzilla had a run in with King Kong in this musical??? What is the budget for this thing???

Well, this is an even bigger crime than making our protagonists into babyeaters, the amount of Godzilla lore that is completely wrong is just. Appalling.

I like to think of the Monsterverse less as a series with continuity and more as an "auteur" based anthology. Each movie being distinct and reflecting a certain vision in tone and visuals and message and etc. "Godzilla", "Kong: Skull Island" and "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" all felt stylized and unique in their own way, standing out during a time Hollywood seemed more interested in finding a winning formula.

In that sense, "Godzilla vs. Kong" didn't quite feel like a Monsterverse movie to me. It was surprising that it existed period, it was "fun" and all that, but it felt like a compromise. It was trying to be safe and appealing to as many people as possible. There are moments in the movie in wich popular music plays in the background as if trying to establish a tone... but the placement felt random and the music would baffingly only last a few seconds... it's like the movie was trying to be "something" but wasn't allowed to.

"Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" is that something. It's the movie the director (and maybe others) really wanted to make. It fits right in with the first three Monsterverse movies, not because they are similar, but because they are all "themselves" and proud of it. I remember reading that the director described it more or less as "the feeling of getting lost in a Godzilla toy aisle during the 80s". The description is on point, maybe because it's not a description at all, it's the vision the movie was based on and lived up to.

On a different topic, now that I think about it... remember the end credits of "King of the Monsters"? How they were hyping up some kind of big congregation and ancient two-sided conflict between giant monsters? "Godzilla vs. Kong" wasn't that. The conflict between the titular monsters was pretty much an accident in-universe, and all happened somewhere else. This doesn't have to be a bad thing, because each movie was made by different people with different ideas. But to anyone who may find it interesting the credits of KotM now feel like they were hyping up "Godzilla x Kong" instead, not fully in continuity but in spirit.

Craig Before The Creek (8/10)-While I liked Craig of the Creek, I wouldn’t call myself a fan but this prequel was pretty fun into was the main characters were like before

Madame Web (0/10)-No reason to watch, awful effects, bland characters, boring story

Megaman X5 (7/10)-Honestly, the story was kind of stale but the gameplay was still top notch

Peacemaker (9/10)-After playing him in Mortal 1 Kombat, I loved this show. Fun characters, funny dialogue, and some pretty good fights

Megaman X6 (5/10)-Guilty pleasure, while a lot of it was annoyingly hard, I liked the virus stuff and the story

Avenue Q (9/10)-Pretty emotional musical about adulthood despite being played by muppets

Kung Fu Panda 4 (6/10)-Waaay too safe, the villain was intimidating until being defeated in 3 hits

Secrets of the Furious Five (8/10)-Pretty neat special, I liked the Furious Five from their movie screentime and the show and this helped fleshed them out

The Button of Doom (6/10)-While not as good as the movie. This is something Megamind 2 wishes it could be

South Park (8/10)-After 26 Seasons, this show is still pretty good. It has moments that make me laugh while still being shocking and there are characters I find likable to watch like Butters and Kenny

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (10/10)-Takes my favorite disk of FFVII and expands hard on it. Traversal feels freeing, the locations feel more full, and the story takes some wild turns.

Smiling Friends Season 1 (8/10)-This shows that adult cartoons don’t have to be about nihilism and can be about hope and enjoying life.

Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy (3/10)-While I find Seth MacFarlane funny this didn’t do it for me. The comedy while having decent setups, is ultimately too lazy to make it funny

Megaman X7 (4/10)-Gameplay was repetitive, the voice acting was bad but hey still liked it more than X3

Megaman X8 (8/10)-The gameplay is pretty fun this time, and Lumine is a pretty good villain if they expanded her more

Megaman X:The Day of Sigma (5/10)-The animation is good don’t get me wrong but the pacing couldn’t keep me engaged

Saw (7/10)-Pretty good story about someone who wants to help people realize they want to live by putting them in death traps

Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Manga (Currently 8/10)-My favorite anime is Fairy Tail and this sequel expands pretty well, the Dragon Gods concept is interesting, the characters are still as they were which is how I like them, and the art during fights are really well detailed

Hello Kitty Super Style (9/10)-I love Supercute Adventures and this show honestly feels like if we got a full 11 minute show.

Mortal Kombat 1995 (8/10)-Fun action and characters. Effects didn’t age the best

Grave of The Fireflies (9/10)-Really emotional movie about those suffering during war

Persona 3 Reload (10/10)-The best gameplay and presentation Persona has ever been.

Godzilla:King of Monsters (9/10)-Really cool action and monsters

King Kong:Skull Island (8/10)-Pretty good story and action

Godzilla 2014 (5/10)-Probably spoiled by how good future Monsterverse but the spectacle was kind of forgettable

Godzilla vs Kong (10/10)-Yup still as fun as I remember it

Hunter X Hunter 2011 (9/10)-As much as I want to strangle Gon the rest of the series is pretty fire

Kaguya Sama Love is War!:The First Kiss That Never Ends (9/10)-Pretty funny and emotional movie

Komi Can’t Communicate (9/10)-Fluttershy as an anime girl

My Senpai Is Annoying (8/10)-I came in wanting Kurobe, left loving Futaba and Takeda

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon:Explorers of Sky-Beyond Time and Darkness (5/10)-The dub is too goofy

OFF The RPG (Opinion Has Changed as of September) (8/10)-Originally I found the fights boring and the fact I was softlocked made it lower. That was a mistake. The story is really haunting and dark, the fights are really basic but not bad, and the locations have an eerie feeling to them

One Piece Film Z (10/10)-Z is a really intimidating villain and the action is pretty good
