Writing Reference: 5 Symbols
for your next poem/story (pt. 3)
CAULDRON
Tumblr media
In understanding symbols, sometimes it is useful to simply look at the shape and see what it resembles.
The traditional cauldron represents nothing so much as the belly of a pregnant woman and, unsurprisingly, it is an important female symbol all over the world.
The circular shape of the cauldron gives another clue; the circle is a symbol of never-ending life and regeneration, and these themes recur repeatedly in stories containing cauldron symbolism.
The way the cauldron is used also gives a hint about its symbolic meaning.
Things are put into the cauldron, heated, and something different is taken out; the basic ingredients are transformed.
Therefore, the cauldron also symbolizes germination and transformation.
Traditionally, cauldrons have three legs:
The number 3 in this instance represents the triple aspect of the Great Goddess, or the three fates.
Shakespeare alludes to this when the three Weird Sisters—arguably the most famous witches in literature—cook up trouble at the beginning of Macbeth.
In pre-Christian literature, countless legends feature magical cauldrons, and it may be because of this that the cauldron has its witchy associations.
Celtic tales tell of cauldrons that contain an unending supply of food or of knowledge.
The dead are frequently thrown into a magical Cauldron of Rebirth and climb out the next day, alive once more.
Mythical warriors and heroes who died in battle are restored to life in this way.
Ceridwen (one of the most powerful witches in all of Celtic mythology and is typically depicted as simultaneously a mother and a wise woman) had a cauldron full of inspiration and magical powers.
In India, a magic life-giving food, called Soma, was brewed in three huge bottomless cauldrons.
In Greece, there are tales in which an ordeal of initiation involves the person boiling in a cauldron, but after the rite, the initiate emerges with magical powers, including the gift of immortality.
CHNOUBIS
Tumblr media
The Chnoubis is a hybrid creature, with the head of a lion and the tail of a serpent.
It was carved onto stones for use as an amulet, providing protection against poisons in particular.
Amulets featuring the Chnoubis date back to the first century and it is supposed that this odd-looking creature may be related to Abraxas, whose image was used in a similar way.
CLADDAGH
Tumblr media
The Claddagh is a popular symbol, often incorporated into the design of rings.
Traditionally used as a wedding ring, it is so-called because it was originally made in a Galway fishing village of the same name in 17th century Ireland.
However, the elements of the design are much older, stretching back into pre-Christian Celtic history.
The Romans had a popular ring design, the Fede, which featured clasped hands.
“Fede” means “fidelity.”
The Claddagh symbol features a heart held by a pair of hands.
A crown usually surmounts the heart.
These features represent love, friendship, and loyalty.
CORNUCOPIA
Tumblr media
Also called the Horn of Plenty, the cornucopia is often depicted in paintings and on friezes where it symbolizes the notion of boundless abundance, as flowers, fruits, sheaves of wheat, and other produce spill out of a hollow horn or a twisting basket woven in the shape of the horn.
The origin of the cornucopia is found in the Greek myth of Amalthea.
Amalthea fed the infant Zeus a drink of goat’s milk and was given the brimming goat’s horn as a reward.
Sometimes the infant Zeus is depicted being fed the milk from the horn itself.
The Cornucopia, as a symbol of a bounteous harvest, is also associated with Ceres, the Goddess of corn, and also with Fortuna, Goddess of good fortune.
CROSSROADS
Tumblr media
In fairy stories and myths, it is often at the crossroads where mischief awaits, usually in the form of other-worldly spirits.
Effectively, the crossroads symbolizes the intersection of two paths, making four potential routes, and a place where a decision must be made, not only practically, but metaphorically too.
The X of the crossroads marks a spot where two worlds meet.
The origins of this story go back to African folklore, where a deity called Esu was the guardian of the crossroads.
When Christianity took over, these old Gods were, quite literally, demonized, and Esu was transformed into the Devil.
Hecate, too, personified as the Queen of the Witches, was called the Goddess of the Crossroads.
In Celtic mythology, corpses belonging to those considered “unholy” were buried at crossroads in order to prevent them coming back to life and because the crossroads was a Gate to the Otherworld. Gibbets were placed at crossroads for the same reason.

Brain can't stop thinking about the parallels between Ghilan'nain and Eurydice, and how Solas saw those parallels and feared what could become of Eury. It still floors me that the two of them work so damn well together because how could I have ever known what Ghilan'nain was back in 2015 when I picked her vallaslin because it was the closest to Lady Amalthea's mark? We only ever had a hint of what Ghilan'nain was, the rest was just us interpreting her as a kindly, wispy halla mother; how the hell was any of us supposed to see her coming? This is why it's just so exciting for me that I stumbled on Eurydice's patron goddess the Mother of Monsters.
I couldn't have planned that better if I tried, dude! It's like the dark mirror image or future of Eurydice I didn't know was a possibility and I am living for it. It makes me a little madder that the Inquisitor isn't the main character of Veilguard because oh my god CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT I COULD DO WITH THAT?
Like I get it, I get, this is my oc, I can't expect the game to cater to that but ffffuuucck the missed opportunity of Ghilan'nain and Eurydice battling it out. This is absolutely what rewrites are for and I am gonna go INSANE with it. Eurydice being forced to face that it may have been fate she picked Ghilan'nain as her goddess, that there was something intricately inside her that called out to the Mother of Navigation, Halla, but ultimately of Monsters. Eurydice, who is naturally curious, poking at things she shouldn't, plays with bones and flesh (but only the dead), and using herself for experiments just to see what would happen. I doubt in canon Ghilan'nain heard her prayers, knew her weakness and desires, and when she saw her, would whisper into her mind  'oh my wayward daughter, don't you wish to come home'?
'I offer what you always wanted--knowledge and freedom. I am the only one to understand you. I was the you who embraced the monster, the broken thing, that she was and I fixed myself'.
(Cooing in her ear when Eurydice rejects her that she can't hide from her, she knows what she hides in the hollow husk she calls a chest, she knows there is no beating heart in her, and she knows that she choose the weakest of mates, the shemling--the most breakable of beings--and soon she will shattered right in front of her, like glass, and then Ghilan'nain will take the children and what fun those will be. What twisted things a shemling and elf can make, let's see how twisted).
Again, missed opportunity to have Ghilan'nain control an Inquisitor with her vallasin because that boss fight could go hard and OH GOD EURYDICE BEING PUPPETED TO FIGHT HER OWN SISTER.
HER BEING POSSESSED. HER WORST FEAR. AND GHILAN'NAIN, THE GODDESS SHE WAS CONFRONT BY AS A CHILD, BEING THE ONE TO DO IT. THE ONE THING SHE LOOKED TO FOR SAFETY AND FELT CONNECTED TO AND IT'S COME TO DEStROY HER
THE POTENTIAL, I'M TELLING YA.
And Solas. Solas, man.
He sees her for the first time with the mark and catches sight of her vallaslin beneath her bangs and there's a ping in his heart, the drop in the pit of his stomach. He doesn't know her yet but he does, she has the same look about her. The same curiosity, the same thirst for knowledge, the brilliance, the capability to be so cruel and careless. Eurydice is not Ghilan'nain, Solas knows that, he knows that Eurydice has empathy where Ghilan'nain does not, it is only that Eurydice can not express it in ways people accept or understand. He knows that unlike Ghilan'nain, Eurydice experiments do not extend to hurting and mutilating other creatures; the only things at risk of her in these curiosities are demons, corpses, and herself. He knows that Eurydice does not hunger for power, she only takes what she needs to survive. Her ambitions only go so far.
Eurydice takes what she needs from the animal she hunts and she leaves.
Ghilan'nain would linger over the corpse and lap at the pool of blood, playing with the meat and bones and flesh like children with paint and clay.
And yet, he sees what Eurydice could be if she let the power of the Inquisition change her. The way she wields power for her own interest and rarely does she extend her empathy past those she loves and deemed worthy of it. He worries that she is stepping into Ghilan'nain's footsteps, especially when he finds her studying the mark or experimenting the rifts in questionable ways, and her only saving grace is that she just wants to know more about what it can do.
Sometimes he would say and be grateful that Eurydice lacked creativity. She has no intention of creating new things, only uncovering every nook and cranny of the world, and collecting what is hidden. He can relate to that.
He tries to guide her best but like him, she is stubborn and they clash often. Solas is an imperfect mentor and a worse attempt at a father, but Spirits he tries. He doesn't intend to treat her as a child and he curses himself when he does, for he sees her fight against him and withdraw. To tell her the truth would be worse, however; to both reveal himself and reveal that her beloved goddess was nothing more than a fairytale would have far reaching consequences. It is cowardly that he never tells her, but he tells himself it's for her benefit. Fathers are meant to protect their daughters, aren't they? At least until they're ready for the truth.
When it's over and she throws her severed arm at his feet in disgust, Solas can say he saved her from becoming her goddess.
Of course that assumes, as he has always done, that Eurydice was not capable of avoiding that fate herself. Perhaps that for the link between Ghilan'nain and her, Eurydice was enough of her own person that she would never have fallen into those same missteps; she would make her own. But that is asking both Solas and Ghilan'nain to see Eurydice--and really all modern elves--as people and not pieces on a chess board.
Still, the horror that will dawn upon Eurydice. The further destruction of her entire belief system and that the goddess she loved so much is spreading blight on her people, on her forest, on her home. Again, she'll have to rebuild. That seems like her and her people's entire lives. Rebuilding, remaking, surviving. Eurydice will outlive her goddess and if there is any justice (in my rewrite) then she will be the one to strike the killing blow right between her eyes.

Can/does The Last Unicorn get used as a script? If so, what would be the themes/programming of an “Amalthea” alter?
Yes, The Last Unicorn can be used as a script.
There can be two parts; The Unicorn and Amalthea. The protagonist is called simply "the unicorn." "Amalthea" is just an alias used when in human form.
The Unicorn (also known as Lady Amalthea). She is brave and decisive as a unicorn. As a unicorn becomes the only one of her kind to have known love, a terrible pain for a pure immortal creature. The unicorn slowly forgets who she is while she remains human. When she returns to her true form, she regains her sense of self, but the woman Amalthea is lost forever. Once restored to Unicorn form, she remains in it and returns to her forest home, where her immortality is guaranteed.
The Last Unicorn is so very, very precious to all involved because she is the last of her kind. After freeing all the other unicorns she remains unique because she's the only one to have ever experienced (and will remember) human emotion.
Her personality changes when she is turned into a human. She is a lost, lonely, frightened person who seeks to find what matters most to her in the world. Lady Amalthea initially has no comprehension of emotions, though the longer she spends as a human the more human she becomes. (Mask Programming)
Anti-Magic: Her power often manifests as this. She breaks spells cast by others, unfastens magic locks, and disenchants a tree Schmendrick accidentally made sentient. She also prevents the use of magic against her. (Spiritual Programming Occult)
Her story has elements of both Moses' and Jesus'. (Spiritual Programming Christian)
In her human form, Amalthea, can experience Doll (Barbie) programming. She is an adult. As "Lady Amalthea", her hair reaches down to her thighs, and she is very composed and feminine.
Amalthea means "tender goddess" in Greek. And was the name of Zeus' nanny goat who incidentally lost a horn. (Greek Programming)
She nearly becomes an actual princess during the story. (Princess Programming) if chosen)
Triggers-Calling her a mare. Harming someone she cares for.
Her colour may be purple.

I am doing busy work at the office today so have some more assorted headcanons for Amalthea's One Piece verse. The other relevant post since this is sort of a series is here.
Her memory is excellent but still quite limited; she has a decent recollection of up to 150 years but it can be spotty. She can be terrible with remembering faces / names unless she has consistent contact with the person throughout their life. (Which is rare, given her reluctance to form attachments.)
She journals habitually. There are several log books on her at all times; she writes down daily events, memories, weather patterns, all sorts of information. This is how she retains some semblence of continuity throughout her long life. The most important and significant "memories" are chronicled so she can reflect on them as needed.
Thea has circumnavigated the entire world several times over, though she has definitely done it at a slow pace. Why rush when she lives forever? In all 4 Blues and the Grand Line, she has islands she claims as "hers." Usually uninhabited places, considered too dangerous or remote for settlement. It's these places where she keeps supply caches and hides accumulated treasure.
Every few decades, Thea will alter her appearance and even present as another gender to better hide herself. This includes changing her identity and relevant paperwork. In the most recent era, since a decade post Roger's death, she's reverted back to her preferred and real likeness.
I've mentioned it to several mutuals but now Im making this more official: Thea has been to Laugh Tale and she is the creator of the singular Eternal Pose to the island. She was acquainted with Roger and he commissioned her to make the Pose. She has not been to Laugh Tale since then.
For 5 years following Roger's execution, Thea demolished the execution stand in Loguetown on the anniversary as a form of protest. She was forced to stop her vandalism when an Admiral was posted there for a time to deter the destruction.
Her current existing bounty poster only lists her epithet as "The Silverblood" and has been in circulation for 125 years. Her posted bounty is 250 million beli.
There are at least two islands; one in West Blue and one in the New World that have mistaken Amalthea as a deity due to her powerful mythical zoan abilities. One likens her to more of a fey-like entity that blesses their waters and the other has effectively made her their patron goddess of the moon, amongst other lesser aspects. She does not speak about this freely, its awkward for her.

Hermes gently held him, placing him in the crook of his elbow. It was surprisingly easy, as if Will weighed no more than a feather and partly he believed in it. The small amount of fat that he gained under the tutelage of Hecate and the influence of the potion completely went into shaping his new figure. The touch was sweet and chaste, but Will's sensitive skin still burned. He was wearing a modest white chiton with puffy sleeves and slightly open shoulders, and Will held his hands pressed to his chest. Will still didn't regret refusing to hold the teddy bear, Hermes somehow expected him to hug him around the neck and he even looked offended when Will didn't. Will thought about how he still had teeth.
"Her name is Lulamae Amalthea! Isn't she a wonder how pretty she is? Hecate recently released her from under her wing, she has just blossomed like the dawn of May" Hermes's voice sounds soft and cheerful like a nightingale trill, he even shook Will slightly for clarity. It made him feel a little dizzy. The name still cut and burned.
Will didn't want to look up, he already knew what he was going to see. Hecate once experienced a particularly acute attack of despair and yet somehow miraculously brought Apollo to him, she spoke frankly and directly, she almost begged Apolo to take him away. Apollo refused her with annoyance.
The eyes of the god who was in love with the mother of Will, indifferent and amber. He has a neutral-polite smile on his face, he does it once or maybe several times just to get Hermes behind him. He pulls out a warm hand and pulls Will's cheek a little: "She's really just lovely."
Will feels even more how tiny an unimportance he is. He wants to burst into tears and scream. He wants to go to his brother or Hecate.
Get fucked, Hermes.
Will wears the most comfortable clothes he can find, because he can't look at himself now, my heart. And yes, we love to see Will bite people/gods.
"Like the dawn of May" I know it's supposed to mean the month, but all I can't think is just how much Hermes tries to make Will a copy of Luke's mother. Even the name.
Hecate, disgusted by herself, couldn't let the child suffer more and tried to get his father to help. But she's nothing to Apollo; she's just a minor goddess — a traitor, just like Will is. There's no love and sympathy he can give to any of them.
And Apollo, upon meeting Will again, just doesn't care. He wants Hermes to leave him alone (sorry, but he sounds so done with him, especially in the myths) and answers as polite as possible and agrees with him. "She's really just lovely."
And Will sees it, hears it, but what can he do? Can he change their minds? Can he receive protection from his father? No, of course not. He's deemed not worthy of it, so he isn't even going to try.
Instead, he wants to see his brother or Hecate — someone who cares about him, someone who loves him no matter what. He doesn't need to be "Lulamae Amalthea" or "Kore" with them; they see him just as he is, no matter how much his body and name changed.

I'm still on this like you don't understand the fact that I choose Ghilan'nain as Eurydice's patron goddess was completely incidental, I picked her vallaslin because it was the closest thing the game had to Lady Amalthea's horn mark and Ghilan'nain in the game isn't actually spoken about besides being a goddess of navigation and halla, and that she made different creatures
we got a hit through a codex that she was might be a mad scientist kind of character, making creatures she shouldn't make, hence why I've always suspected she might be more malevolent than we were lead to believe but THIS
OHOHO
THIS
Eurydice whose also a mad scientist, skating the line of unethical experimentation but only so much that technically she's not doing anything wrong, who saw Ghilan'ain as a guide, a source of protection, a safe place, someone who might understand her and it TURNS OUT
IT TURNS OUT SHE'S PROBABLY FUCKING INSANE AND EVERYTHING EURYDICE COULD BE IF SHE LOST HER SOUL
TAKE A GOOD LOOK EURYDICE THIS COULD BE YOU IF YOU EVER BECOME DIVINE

We are nothing but a game to the Goddesses we are meant to love.
They watch us with their milky eyes and plaster grins, drinking their cocktails mixed of salty tears and bitter blood. In our dreams we see them, sword in hand, sword in heart. They hold our souls on puppet strings, toying with us until we drop dead. They've built their thrones atop our burial grounds, their palaces on our battle fields. Their marble fortresses are stained with our blood. They never have to worry about it fading, every hundred years there's a fresh coat.
One thousand years ago and another four hundred, the first Rite was performed. It was only Apollonia and Amalthea then, sisters of sun and moon.
Princess Elizabeth was the first to play and the first to win. Her goddess became Zorina, of Life.
The Second Princess was the first to lose. There is a story we’ve heard that says her goddess still walks the earth today, solemn, lost, looking for something she never had: freedom.
When Princess Creiddylad won two hundred years after Princess Elizabeth, her goddess was granted power over death, Morgana was her name, all because Creiddylad stained the world red with her Rite. She would do anything, anything to win. And she did. Of course she did. We all are supposed to win.
The Second Princess was the outlier. The Second, The Sixth, The Ninth, and The Tenth.
And now Paget. The Fifteenth.
They are the failures. The numbered mistakes. The ones that were never supposed to happen. They’re the ones whose names you don’t learn in school, whose portraits you will never see in the halls of your church or hear the choir sing songs about them. No one will give their children their names, after their triumphs and successes. No one will pray to the goddesses who stood by their sides as they lived and as they died.
No, the only people who know their names are the princess and her goddess themself. Only us.
Because to us, they’re the warnings. This is what will happen if you lose, the priestesses say. They’re examples of everything that we could become.
Everything that we did become.
It was never supposed to happen like this.
When Amalthea and Apollonia initiated the first Rite, no one was ever supposed to die. But somehow, The Second Princess did.
And then there were more than two options.
It was no longer just win or lose, the Rite became live or die. But to us, they mean the same thing.
And that's why we’re here.
We are the failures, the mistakes. We are the ones whose songs you will never hear and whose names you will never remember.
But we will make sure that you remember theirs.
Because they were more than the just Princess and her Goddess. They were children. They were creators. They were the outliers who saw their world as more than just something they had to fight to stay in. For them, it was beautiful. Wonderful, even. They were lovers, content in each other's arms. They sang and they danced and they drew and they smiled. They laughed like honey.
We never laughed.
But in the end, after the Rite was over and all that was left was blood and tears and screams, when their laughter were just echoes and their smiles just shadows, she still had memories of being happy with her.
That’s more than what any of us could ever say.
And for that, she is not one of us.

goddess / deity au for amalthea?
definitely have thought about it, given that unicorns are one of the pinnacle examples of magical creature. but thinking of her as a sort of 'last of her pantheon', an old god of magic, chivalry, pride and nature.
did you know unicorns are more than the pretty, innocent and feminine beasts we see them as today? id want amalthea to be more of a representation of how her kind were represented in the past.
this ancient entity whose power is understated but no less influential still, even despite the crumbling of her fellow deities. she is the remnant of their power, still drawing faith from mortals because of how wide spread the myths of her kind have grown.
