I think we should put more emphasis on how Akutagawa's love is killing him. Descriptions of his feelings for Atsushi should draw from death imagery more. Atsushi's smile is devastatingly beautiful to Akutagawa. His laughter is lethal. Atsushi's touch feels scorching hot. When he's near, the air around becomes unbreathable. He hugs Akutagawa, and Akutagawa feels like his bones are being crushed under those new and overwhelming feelings. Akutagawa drowning in Atsushi's eyes, sinking in his embrace. Akutagawa's love for Atsushi is piercing, painful, Akutagawa's heart is wounded and bleeding. Akutagawa is smitten. All contributing to represent how Akutagawa's love for Atsushi is going to be the end for him. And it was! And he is doomed by his very love, by his very ability of feeling human emotions. Akutagawa's love for Atsushi is going to be the reason he dies.

smth kinda fucked up about watching doumeki go from whole assedly making life or death decisions for watanuki as a desperate but firm love language every other tuesday to fucking sitting in quiet anguish with a pained look on his face with his eyebrows fucking tweaking out, still able to make life or death protective decisions sometimes but being fucking paralysed with indecision most times that don't involve immediate physical actions to the point it's clearly ripping his head and heart in two even if he still retains that refusal to give up
#seeing love grant him the strength to make drastic actions but also to freeze him in a stasis that actively hurts every bone in his body is#iDKKKK IDK IDK IDK#my complicated thoughts abt rou strike again#i rly like the intricacies to which stuff stays the same and stuff plunges into tragic monotony and hurt#although some things about the ending/continuation are pure ass and clamp being dumb for no reason#the real complicated part is that i mostly love how well characterised and visceral the hurt of the angst is#but that i wish there was an inproving end point because of the love for the characters and moral of 70 percent of the story#you want these characters to go through it and then to come to happier places or reconvene somehow but#well#ive explained this conundrum 500 times before#but this is one of those specific cases where i have to say that the expression work in holic is so fucking singular#that even when they dont or barely speak you can fucking read everyones eyes like a book#its why i hesitate to call douwata subtext#it doesnt rly make sense cause the feelings involved are so obvious as they are with everything else in the series#the expression work is both rly good for understanding the story in a way that doesn't just focus on good art or speech bubbles#but also it means you can actively see a characters heart shatter into tiny sharp abrasive pieces in real time#it's beautiful and horrific and aaaa#when shit goes quiet and doumeki leaves the room and just breaks tf down and we basically see him all but fucking crying#god.

Started reading The Vampire Armand to help me understand the backstory for a fic I've been planning.
I knew what was coming. I'd read the summary. I was warned by so many fans, but still...this is one of the saddest fucking works of fiction I've read in a long time...and I'm only on chapter three.
#the vampire armand#another case where an antagonist's tragic backstory explains a lot about why they make the choices they do#it's a horror story before the vampirism even becomes relevant#.....and the orientalism and western eurocentrism is...painfully unexamined#like I can't tell if it's intentional or not that the protag is removed from his name language culture and heritage#and converted to an unquestionably western roman catholic leaning secular view#by a man whose name derives from a god of war and who represents one of the foundational empires of the modern western civilization#it's a choice rife with colonialist associations and begging for analysis

HIS. WHERE#god okay because look. i think her thing about age gaps is hilarious. i think agnieszka and sarkan is compelling#but agnieszka and kasia is soooooo much more interesting to me. loving someone you hate (but you love more)#and being envious of someone whose life you fear (but you want more)#how do you see the truth of yourself reflected in someone else’s eyes and bear the fact that you are petty and cruel in a thousand ways#how do you go about loving them with wild abandon afterwards. how do you let yourself be loved by them#and I think like. changing the story a little is a way to go about that#and the first part of it is so obvious—kasia gets taken. she is brave and tragic and kind and then marek rapes her and suddenly she’s angry#i think *that’s* a Kasia who would start taking advantage of the library and the laboratory#and I think when Agnieszka came when sarkan was off handling the chimera (because it would be her. it would always be her)#Kasia would grab some potions and come to dvernik to save everyone. and with agnieszka it would work#and THEN you get sarkan getting injured and agnieszka using his spell to get them *all* back to the tower and that’s where the fun begins#but like. god. why hasn’t someone else written it#uprooted
