CUT DEEP into the innards of the southern front, Ukraine’s first underground hospital feels like something out of a James Bond movie. State-of-the-art gadgetry begins with admissions. Wounded soldiers arrive directly from the battlefield: in cars, ambulances, quad bikes, or whatever else can carry them. They are assessed and colour-coded into modules by urgency: “red zone” cases for immediate operations, “yellow zone” for other treatment. Alongside an operating theatre, enclosed in steel barrels several metres below ground level, is an intensive care unit. There is a ventilator, and even a laboratory for blood tests. The centre is set up for sophisticated operations: bone repair, soft tissue reconstruction, and even arterial bypass surgery.
In military jargon, this is a “role 2” facility, the second of four treatment tiers from frontline triage to tertiary hospital care. Doctors move people on if they can. Those stable enough are whisked off to “role 3” facilities, approximately 30km away. The rest are treated and stabilised here, a little over 10km from the contact line. The hospital’s immaculately joined wooden beams—chosen over concrete to soften shrapnel in the event of a Russian strike—project a deceptive warmth, like being in a Scandinavian sauna. The drones and glide-bombs that terrorise the skies outside make clear that this is not a place to relax. Ukraine’s medics are here, underground, not by choice. Like the soldiers they treat, they are among the hunted.
Evhen, the underground hospital’s chief medical officer, grunts at any suggestion that Russia might follow the Geneva conventions, which forbid targeting medical units. “They don’t even know what it means,” he says. To the Russian military, doctors are “force multipliers”—they patch up soldiers and send them back to fight, take a long time to train and are hard to replace. Ukraine now tells its medics to remove any markings that might set them apart. “If you put a red cross on a car, you’ll be fired on within 15 minutes.” The goal is still to get wounded soldiers from the frontline to a role 2 treatment unit within an hour, but drones drag out the process, often for hours. The delays often mean life or death; limb or no limb. Leave a tourniquet on for more than a few hours, and tissue damage is irreversible.
Ukraine believes survival on the battlefield is the key to regaining the edge in a war that has become largely attritional. The underground hospitals are a key part of the puzzle, says Roman Kuziv, the 35-year-old doctor who helped design them. A technocratic planner with experience of working as a surgeon in Europe, Dr Kuziv has quickly risen through the Ukrainian ranks: from local hospital chief to medical commander of the entire eastern and southern front. He lets data guide him to new standards and protocols. War pulses through the monitors in front of him. He claims the medical data give him “80% of the picture” about what is happening on the battlefront. Where units are well organised and where they are not. Where morale is good and where it is not. He makes a call to commanders whenever he spots a problem.
Swiping through images on his smartphone—a surreal blend of family photos and flesh wounds—Dr Kuziv reveals the brutal injuries and hard choices his teams face daily. He pulls up a photo of a man with a gaping hole in his upper body, alongside a kidney sliced in two, and a 30cm slab of missile metal that had been lodged deep in his midriff. “Did the man make it?” Remarkably, yes, he did. Another soldier, this time with a deep gash across his back, part of his spine missing, internal organs spilling out. That soldier survived initial surgery in the underground hospital, but died two days later. A third clip shows a soldier in his 30s, convulsing violently as he tries to drink a cup of water. What was up here? “Hydrophobia,” the commander says. “An extreme aversion to water.” In short, the soldier had rabies, caused by a single bite from a cat, and it was too late to save him. The army saw a handful of such cases before culling wild animals in the area.
Almost three years of war have brought Ukraine’s army doctors a mountain of unexpected challenges. Drones have largely rewritten the rulebook on battlefield wounds: the numbers are rocketing, and the attacks are more persistent, more targeted. The “golden hour”—NATO doctrine for evacuating a soldier to proper care within 60 minutes—has become something closer to fiction. Chemical weapons have returned to the field, too, with the re-appearance of agents like chloropicrin, a poison gas first seen in the trenches of the first world war. The gas, used to flush out Ukrainians from their trenches and foxholes, attacks the soft tissues of the respiratory system. At higher doses, it kills.
The demands have seen Ukrainian military medicine develop in quick time. Today’s setup is unrecognisable from seven years ago, when Dr Kuziv first began working with the army. The commander regularly tracks Russian social media to gauge how well he is doing. He’s usually happy with the comparison with Russian front-line medicine. “It’s the second world war over there.” But the demands and need to stay ahead are relentless. The ministry of defence has just approved another 20 of his “role 2” underground hospitals, which are being co-financed by an industrial sponsor. The commander is also working on an overhaul of “role 1” facilities, front-line triage units. According to his futuristic vision, these will be accessible underground by a system of mechanical elevators.
There have been mistakes, thousands who could have been saved. But Russia’s war without limits would test the resources of any military medical service, Dr Kuziv insists. “All-out war gives you one or two months to study and adapt.” NATO countries should be thinking about how they would cope, he says. “Honestly, they are not prepared. They wouldn’t know what’s hit them.”

Hello, I see your ask box open! Can I ask for the Yandere Alphabet for Pairo (from HunterxHunter), Natsume Soseki, Fukuzawa Yukichi, Mori Ogai (from Bungo Strays Dog), Eto Yoshimura and Nagachika Hideyoshi (from Tokyo Ghoul)?
I forgot to remind you of this so forgive me but I only accept 4 letters and 4 characters for my Yandere Alphabet. I already asked you regarding the letters but I forgot to add the characters so I just chose from here...
@naeho @flaming-vulpix @shumidehiro @leveyani @izanami78
Tw:Yandere themes, unhealthy mindset, unhealthy relationship, possessive behavior, obsession, isolation, manipulation, gaslighting, sadism, torture
Yandere Alphabet
Hideyoshi Nagachika
Earnest-How intense and dangerous are they really?
🟡Hide is a rather carefree and jolly individual and not only for show. From the cast of Tokyo Ghoul he's probably one of the most harmless as he has neither some deep trauma nor is he really possessive, sadistic or manipulative. What would be the scariest thing about him is probably his determination. If Hide sets his mind to something you better bet your arse that he'll do everything to reach the goal in his mind. The relationship he desires is from the point that he realizes his obsession his one and only desire and he'll do everything to eventually achieve this. What's also remarkable to note is that Hideyoshi is in for the long game if needed. Underneath that outgoing personality is a very smart observer and thinker which might make it easy for you to overlook that Hide is more of a meticulous planner that he may let on.
Ideals-What do they have in mind for the future?
🟡Even with his long-term plans always in the back of his mind, Hide is more of a simple guy when it comes to the wishes for the future. He just wants to be happy with his darling and be with them until death tears the both of you apart. He doesn't put a lot of emphasis on marriage until the both of you are in your late twenties because he doesn't cave in easily to social pressure. If he can just see you laughing and smiling for the rest of your lives and know that he's the reason behind your happiness, he wouldn't ask for more. That is his goal from the very beginning and what is admirable is that it always stays his goal even with everything that happens to him throughout the years.
Mask-Do they change their behavior after falling in love with their darling? Do they act differently around them than around other people?
🟡He's not changing his attitude around you as soon as he comes to realize his own feelings. He's always been a ball of sunshine around you. What does change though is the frequency he ends up seeing you afterwards. He suddenly starts popping up around you a lot more than what you'd consider coincidence and he does so because he is aware of his own feelings now. Yet the happy grin he always offers you and he encourages you a lot. At the same time he becomes more observant though as he has a bit of an obsessive streak going on. He's going to get your phone number now and you better answer his calls and messages within a certain amount of times or he'll get worried. Hideyoshi takes the behavior he shows everyone but increases it overall when he's now around you.
🟡As already mentioned, Hide shows every person he meets the same carefree and happy attitude. So there isn't a very gravid difference in how he acts around others and how he acts around his darling. It's just that around his darling he's just a tad bit more of all the things he usually is already. Just a bit more happier around you. Just a bit more prone to worry for you than for others. Hideyoshi is awfully social so perhaps it's good that he is so open, eager and funny when he interacts with others and takes you out on dates. As his crush obsession you get the special treatment from him obviously. The thing is that it doesn't look that strange to others because his tendencies are just very subtle in comparison to his friend.
Voice-If their darling asks them for something, would they give it to them? How much do they do in general for them?
🟡Short answer would be yes. I see Hideyoshi as the guy who would in general do a lot for his darling. This includes spoiling them too because he has a case of lovesick infatuation at times. The poor guy has troubles saying no to his darling because puppy eyes and a bit of begging normally always manage to crack his weak determination to not give in to you so easily. Perhaps he has never really planned on ever denying you too much anyways. He's even putting in a lot of effort which brings us back to his previously mentioned determination. You want something? He'll make sure to get it for you and if he has to run through all of Tokyo to get you what you want. Just reward him with a smile and a kiss and all of it will be worth it.
🟡Honestly, Hideyoshi does a lot for his darling. Not only will he always do his best to get his hands on whatever they ask him to fetch for them, he also does a lot of other things. He's probably the guy who buys you once a week a bouquet of flowers and lots of other small stuff like keychains and snacks but he also is the one who plans a lot of dates. He's just bubbling over with cool ideas he wants the both of you to try. From a very unique café in this area of Tokyo to a special restaurant on the other side of Tokyo to visiting Tokyo Tower together, to what else he can find. You get the idea that he just loves going outside with his s/o a lot and do funny and cool activities with them. He's working hard to be able to afford all of the needed money to visit each and every place he has in mind too, all in hopes of giving you a good time and something to remember fondly later on.
Eto Yoshimura
Earnest-How intense and dangerous are they really?
🟩Eto is an 11 out of 10 if I'd have to give her a scale. Eto's darling is screwed because she's without a doubt one of the worst Yandere one could have. She's terribly sadistic, will definitely indulge in you every once in a while by biting you and taking bits of flesh from you and her sharp intuitions makes it very easy to torment you mentally and physically and she enjoys every second of it. Differently from people like Tsukiyama she never goes through an emotional change either as you're always perceived as a precious toy and plaything for her and she'll never stop seeing you as anything else. Eto has a hobby of playing mind games with you too which means that on certain days she might be a lot more nicer to you to lull you into a false sense of security only to crush you and torture you within the next minute. It messes with your mentality and she enjoys seeing you walking on eggshells around her, always paranoid when she'll snap again. Your fear is adorable~
Ideals-What do they have in mind for the future?
🟩You can't expect anything much from her as the future she envisions is pretty much everything she's doing with you already. You're an object and a possession so you'll be kept until she's either tired of you or you die. Honestly, Eto expects to grow tired of you but even after you've been severely broken by her games and torture, she still kind of wants to keep you around. It's utterly fascinating to her to feel that deeply for someone but she's keeping you all the more for that. She'll never let you go, she'll never let you die on her either. Your life is hers so she decides everything that's happening to you. Even when it's time for you to die and considering her twisted attachment, she doesn't plan to let you slip through her fingers anytime soon.
Mask-Do they change their behavior after falling in love with their darling? Do they act differently around them than around other people?
🟩I'd say the shift in personalities would be the most jarring if you're human and knew her in her human identity as Sen Takatsuki. As Sen she's clumsy and her mind is all over the place which makes her seem as a really forgetful individual. She'd use that to her advantage though, luring you to her under the mask of being a playful although ditzy person only to pull the rug from under your feet as soon as she has you where she wants to have you. Because that's when she exposes her true colours to you and she has to say, the look of shock, fear and betrayal doesn't disappoint her in the slightest bit. That makes it all the more interesting to watch your reactions when she suddenly switches back to acting like Sen around you, to crush your hope and your willpower like this over and over again.
🟩Under her human disguise she treats everyone the same who is unaware of her true identity. Even then her interest in you would spike though and she'd approach you with an almost cat-like curiosity. Behind the scenes she would already make sure to have other ghouls who she has manipulated to do her bidding follow you around and stalk you so that she can run into you more. Maybe the only advantage you have over other humans and even ghouls is that she would never mercilessly slaughter you. On the other hand, you're subjected to never-ending torture so perhaps you still have it worse. You're always going to be the one person she'd never get rid off as every other person is always someone she can and will slaughter if they would prove to be more useful dead than alive. That's a curse more than a blessing though as you're forever subjected to her twisted affection.
Voice-If their darling asks them for something, would they give it to them? How much do they do in general for them?
🟩Perhaps if you really beg for it, but even then there's no guarantee for her to do such a nice thing for you. You see, whilst you knew her as Sen small presents to court you weren't even that uncommon but it wasn't down out of chivalrous motives or even to fully capture your heart but merely to play with you to get you more comfortable around her. As Eto it isn't very likely for her to listen much to you at all. She does enjoy seeing you miserable and in agony so sometimes she might promise to consider a plead from you if you groval at her feet and beg enough. If you manage to amuse her enough, she might fulfill you a small request or two but it comes with the price of throwing away your pride and honor. Well, what can she say? Seeing you all pathetic and humiliated is such a cute sight to behold.
🟩To ensure that she can always enjoy seeing you put on such a miserable show of sobs and pleads in front of her, Eto can be exceptionally cruel. Normally you get the bare minimum to survive somewhat but it's never really enough to make you happy. Even bare necessities like water, food and even hygiene are kept low that it is never enough to fulfill you. If you want more, you always have to ask her for permission. Sometimes she's even cruel enough to deny you even that entirely unless you do exactly as she says. She's always exploring and using you for her own fun and your own thoughts and feelings are rarely considered.
Fukuzawa Yukichi
Earnest-How intense and dangerous are they really?
⚪I'd say that his darling is on a safer side because Fukuzawa actually acts like his age. He's fairly calm and composed and rarely someone who would let feelings interfere with his judgement. You're lucky to get a lucid man who is capable of feeling ashamed of his feelings. That aside though, the most problems this man will give you are all connected to his very protective tendencies. He's probably just a tiny bit paranoid because he's the president of the Armed Detective Agency but he won't interfere too much with your personal life unless something happens. The problem comes when something happens though because you'll quickly discover that he's not taking any risks when it comes to your safety. Suddenly the composed and calm man has this almost oppressing aura that makes him intimidating and leaves no room for arguments. Whilst I wouldn't label him as someone who would abuse his power, it's also worth mentioning that he can twist and bend the law a bit when he would deem it as necessary.
Ideals-What do they have in mind for the future?
⚪He has a very classic idea of the future when it comes to his s/o. A marriage is 100% included in there, a really traditional one at that. He'd wait a few years before proposing though in order to work as much initial arguments out as possible in order to settle down peacefully with his darling later on. He wouldn't wait as long as Kunikida would though because I do think he might feel a bit pressured since he's already in his forties and not the youngest anymore. Otherwise he wouldn't have too many demands for the future, he just wants to protect and cherish his darling as much as he can. He's satisfied with the simple things in life with his s/o.
Mask-Do they change their behavior after falling in love with their darling? Do they act differently around them than around other people?
⚪He's trying to hide his feelings after he has realized his obsession with you. The reason for that is his inevitable feeling of shame and guilt so he tries to treat you like he treats his co-workers. With respect and patience but his normally so impeccable composure just crumbles around you slowly but surely. His eyes always peek over to you when you're close to him, if you touch him in any way he tenses up ever so slightly and in the worst case you elicit the hint of a pink blush out of him. Ultimately he's trying but failing to hide his growing feelings for you. Eventually you find Fukuzawa actually being the one who goes out of his way to engage in interactions with you as he suddenly seems to want to socialize with you a lot more than what you would have expected from a normally more reserved man as him.
⚪The president of the Agency tries to keep it as subtle as possible but there's no denying it. If anyone would just observe him closely, they'd notice the differences before he decides to come as clean with his feelings as he is. One thing is the already mentioned awkwardness around you. He becomes more hyper-aware around you and more mindful of his words and actions, careful to keep his dignity intact in front of you. He doesn't want to embarrass himself even the slightest in front of you. Fukuzawa has also a staring problem around you and he doesn't even notice that until someone points it out to him. It isn't to the point where it's creepy but it's enough to be noticable for his subordinates. I do think in your presence he's trying to not come over as too stern and strict which is why people like Ranpo and Dazai often end up keeping you around if they want the president to not scold them in any way or form.
Voice-If their darling asks them for something, would they give it to them? How much do they do in general for them?
⚪I'd say that it depends on what you ask him. Whilst Fukuzawa is someone who will always listen to what his darling has to say and listen to their opinions unless he's really on the brink of an emotional breakdown, he isn't someone who coddles and spoils his s/o actively. He sees a relationship as something where both parts give and take equally in their own ways to show that they appreciate each other. Considering that your comfort is really important to him, especially if you'd ask him for something because otherwise you'd be uncomfortable would he be very quick to try to soothe your unease. Small favors such as buying groceries or fixing something that has broken are also always things you can ask him to do and be sure that he will do it for you within the same day.
⚪Fukuzawa always makes sure to do enough for you to let you know that he cherishes you and loves you. It isn't to the point where it would overwhelm you or where he would carelessly buy everything for you but it is enough to let you know everyday that he adores you. Yukichi just cares a lot for your safety and your comfort, especially since he is aware of the risks that you're in due to being his significant other. A lot of people hold a grudge against the ADA and would want to see their downfall and you'd be the easiest target for them since you're his lover, especially if you possess no special gift. He might also have days where he is very busy in the Agency when something is going on. He doesn't spend much time with you during such times and tries to make it up to you afterwards. He feels a bit guilty for ignoring you for a bit even when he knows that you're not angry with him. You know how hard he works for the safety of the city after all.
Mori Ougai
Earnest-How intense and dangerous are they really?
🍷I'd wager that you would not want to end up as Mori's darling. Looking on how he's an experienced and cruel mafioso who just happens to be the boss too, any chance of escaping are very little. Mori has connections and subordinates all over the city and isn't afraid to break the rules and the law if he needs to do so which implies that he might just wreck a bit of havoc if you should ever do something as stupid as trying to escape or hide from him. The possibilites don't even end there which is even more terrifying because just like Fyodor, Mori isn't worried about personally messing with your life so that you have no choice but to rely on him if you don't want to learn how to survive on the streets. Considering that he can act very sappy around his darling, you sometimes forget who you have in front of you and whilst Mori is a fan of a bit of spunk in his darling, if you underestimate him and act up a bit too much, you'll be very quickly reminded just how dangerous this man really is.
Ideals-What do they have in mind for the future?
🍷Oh~He just wants to keep you for the rest of his life with him. After all the mafioso adores you in a very twisted and sick way and could never imagine not having you always right by his side. And that is really all that he desires for the future. To always have his sweet and gorgeous doll by his side so he can coddle, spoil and dote on them all he wants. He doesn't need your consent for any of that and to your great annoyance you discover that he actually adores it when you act a bit more spicy. He enjoys if you have a bit of fire inside of you. He can act uncannily excited around you when he demands you to put on the pretty clothes he bought for you or simply has you on his laps and dotes on you. It's so creepy when he acts like this.
Mask-Do they change their behavior after falling in love with their darling? Do they act differently around them than around other people?
🍷If you meet him anywhere in public, it's very likely that you'll let yourself get fooled by his clumsy and worried exterior just like Atsushi. Who can blame you though, Mori is good in making himself appear like a goofy and sappy man when he's not currently acting as the boss of the Port Mafia. Yet even whilst he keeps you from being warily around him in his disguise, the difference in his behavior is still fairly obvious. Suddenly he is so clingy when he's with you and tries to delay your departure from him and Elise as much as possible, insisting that you accept the presents he buys you and begging you try on the clothes he bought you and wear them the next time you two meet. Even after the truth has been revealed, will he not stop acting like a clingy and sappy fool when with you. Now it's turned up to the point where it unsettles you and now you also know better than take him for a bit of a goofy idiot. You've seen what evilness hides under that pout.
🍷It's pretty obvious but you get the Elise treatment from him but just a bit more intense than that. Around everyone else who knows him Mori is always in his role as the boss of the Port Mafia but only around Elise and you, especially around you, does he relapse. As soon as you're around, he can never fully resist to falter and keep his hands to himself. He always wants to touch you in some way when you're around and always has to dote on you somehow when you're with him. It's not something Mori seems to be able to stop himself from doing so even under the eyes of other members of the Port Mafia will he act like a sappy idiot which probably disturbs some whilst it annoys others. He never loses his face though because everyone knows just what he's capable of.
Voice-If their darling asks them for something, would they give it to them? How much do they do in general for them?
🍷Just ask him for something and Mori will give you anything. He's showering you with everything one could ask for and even more. He's undeniably down bad for his darling and if they pout and beg a bit he literally can't stop himself. If you're acting all cute and mad when you want something, he's always cooing over you and your cuteness. It's a bit embarrassing and I'm sure Kouyou has scolded him quite a bit for his weak will when it comes to you. Sometimes Mori is being a bit mean though and denies you something you want on purpose for the sole reason for seeing you acting a bit mad and throwing a small tantrum. It's just adorable to watch you being upset and angry but don't worry, he'll stop teasing you soon and make it up to you. You can get anything from food to jewels to clothes from him as long as you know how to make his heart melt. Just don't expect him to ever give you your freedom back.
🍷You know what? You don't even have to ask him really for any material stuff because most of the time, if not even all of the time, Mori does this on his own free will. He buys you everyday something and most of the time those gifts of his are cute clothes with all sorts of ribbons and adornments on them. Your life is basically that of a human-sized doll as you often feel like he's playing dollhouse with you and Elise and he loves every second of it. When it comes to the question of Mori doing much for you, in a way he does much for you if you let his excessive spoiling count. Unfortunately he does this without you even wanting it as he ultimately just does it for his own pleasure.

so the UK government is planning to change the definition of extremism after NINE people were arrested at the London Palestine march, out of one hundred thousand attendees
yeah, if the charges against the arrested are correct then those were hate crimes, unambiguously - chanting about a historic massacre of jews. but with the Tories’ abhorrent PCSCA on the books and in force, which treats fundamental acts of protest as crimes, it’s remarkable that this event ended with that few arrests. this was without question a peaceful and honest outcry in a democratic society
so, the met and Braverman’s draconian powers failed this time. so Gove announces they’re changing what extremism is defined as, ie so the PCSCA acts better next time. fucking hell
i cannot stress this enough. the UK government must not be given this enabling act, not for Cruella, not for Rishi, not for Keith, not for no one.
the main point of the PCSCA was to stamp out climate protests and other bothersome groups. if the government gets to redefine extremism, protesting in this country is going to be far more difficult. not to mention the monitoring that comes along with the extremist label. the climate protests, the Sarah Everard protests, BLM, the republic movement, central strike demonstrations, pride, trans vigils, they can all end with far more mass arrests, criminal records and monitoring. no Princess can try to sanitise that
and if the label is broadened far enough for this measure to achieve what it wants, then it’s crying-wolf. antisemitism IS roaring high in this country, and we need community solidarity and state action to counter it to save lives, livelihoods, and the British Jewish communities that mean so much. by swamping the definition of criminal antisemitism with criticism of the IDF and Israeli State, via the definition “support for Hamas [citation needed], congratulations, it’s far harder to recognise, counter and fight the actual antisemitic problem in this country. it’s dead-catting every jewish person in britain
i’ve been silent about this month’s events so far. i’ve been disgustingly silent. because i saw 1,400 innocent people slaughtered in the Simchat Torah Massacre, and 200 kidnapped, and i felt the need for justice. in a just world, this would be a just cause, one of the most just you can imagine. the planners and perpetrators of this horrific attack would’ve needed to be dragged to The Hague and left to rot forever. i kept silent because of cognitive dissonance, no more no less. i was outraged and in mourning. i wanted justice, and i wanted it so bad that i could put aside the fact that this is not justice, and it never would have been with an IDF pursuing its everyday atrocities
the Simchat Torah dead are never going to be done justice. they are being used. the IDF, SOI, Netanyahu, Likud and their enablers are waging something beyond retribution. this is genocide. Gaza is being blitzed and butchered. annihilation and death is the end goal. and my government is planning to define believing that fact to be extremism. they couldn’t move their arses about hate law after Brianna Ghey, or the Plymouth Incel, or Finsbury Park, or Jo Cox, but apparently not wanting 2 million people to be bleached off the face of the earth needs to be stamped out

Urbanizing favelas is among top goals of Brazil’s new secretariat
An activist with the Homeless Workers’ Movement (MTST) since 2005, Guilherme Simões took over in January as head of Brazil’s new National Secretariat for Policies for Peripheral Territories, one of the five secretariats making up the Ministry of Cities. Originally created in 2003, during the first term of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the ministry was abolished by former President Jair Bolsonaro, Kazinform reports citing Agencia Brasil.
A government department dedicated to taking care of peripheral regions is, however, a novelty in meeting the demands of social movements, Simões argued. He described it as a structure that combines urbanistic thinking with the life experiences of those on the outskirts of big cities.
«It’s where the ideas of urban planners, and architects meet the interests of the movements that operate on the outskirts. [President] Lula is meeting this demand by creating this secretariat,» he remarked.
Among the department’s duties, the secretariat should deal with the urbanization of favelas and the prevention of risks such as floods and landslides. Simões plans to address these issues in both the short and the long runs. «What we have observed in all these years is that the these peripheral territories have been neglected and marginalized,» he declared.

Kishi Nobusuke’s Bandung of the right
Excerpted from "The conservative imaginary: moral re-armament and the internationalism of the Japanese right, 1945–1962" by Reto Hofmann
In 1962, MRA launched its Asia Center in Odawara, Japan. Perched on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean and designed by a Swiss architect, Charles Rudolph, MRA no doubt modelled Odawara on Caux – as a place made to impress.26 Indeed, the inauguration ceremony spoke of the connections and the high profile the movement had built in the 1950s across Asia (Figure 3). The long list of guests included Kim Jong-pil, the head of the Korean Central Investigation Agency (KCIA); Truong Cong Cuu, Minister of Culture of Vietnam; General He Yingchin, a close aide of Chiang Kai-shek, from the Republic of China; U Narada, a Burmese monk; and representatives from forty-two countries, including Australia, South Africa, Malaya and Korea. Among Japanese dignitaries figured the sitting Prime Minister, Ikeda Hayato, as well as his predecessors, the aging Yoshida Shigeru, and, crucially, Kishi Nobusuke: he had been instrumental, during his prime ministership from 1957 to 1960, in setting up the Asia Center as he flirted with MRA as part of his vision to recast Japan as a hub for Asian regionalism.
Broadly speaking, the MRA Asia Center was the product of three intersecting forces. First, having made a name for himself in the West, Buchman determined to apply European lessons to Cold War Asia and, as seen in MRA’s courting of Hatoyama, decided to make Japan into its linchpin. In a report dated 17 July 1953, barely a week before the end of the Korean War, MRA stated that ‘Asia has to start all over again’. In the face of communism, greed, and poverty, MRA’s ‘moral ideology’ was the ‘only superior alternative offered to Asia’ – ‘only “heart-washing” will supersede “brain-washing”’. In this vision, Buchman earmarked a special place for Japan, calling it the ‘light of Asia’.
Second, Odawara must be regarded in the shadow of other pushes for Asian regionalism in the 1950s, such as the Colombo Plan, SEATO, and, in particular, the Afro-Asian Conference held in Bandung in 1955. At the Bandung Conference, as it is more commonly known, the participants strove to forge unity among Asian and African nations in order to remain non-aligned in the Cold War. As pointed out by Miyagi Taizo, for Japan, which was in Asia but closely tied to the United States, Bandung raised an old dilemma: was Japan part of Asia or the West? Put differently, Bandung offered Japan the prospect to ‘return to Asia’, but, at the same, embracing Bandung-style neutralism was impossible given Japan’s alliance with the United States (Miyagi 2001, 10–17). To reconcile this contradiction, Kishi envisioned an Asian regionalism centred on Japan and the MRA Asia Center was integral in this plan.
Third, Kishi’s promotion of the Asia Center reveals the postwar history of Pan-Asianist ideology within the conservative establishment. Kishi, the political scientist Richard Samuels has argued, ‘personified Japan’s transwar continuities’ (Samuels 2003, 141, 248). Also nicknamed the ‘monster of Showa’, he epitomized the survival of right-wing thought not just as far as domestic politics were concerned, but also, and perhaps especially, in his vision of Asia. Throughout his life, Kishi praised Kita Ikki, Japan’s foremost fascist thinker, Okawa Sh umei, the Pan-Asianist guru, and Uesugi Shinkichi, the promoter of an emperor-centric interpretation of the Constitution (Kang and Hyun 2016, 3233). In the 1930s, Kishi became a top ‘reformist bureaucrat’ in Manchukuo, where he made it his goal to build a ‘fascist economic policy’ that would undergird Japan’s ‘security state’ (kokubo kokka) and its hegemony in Asia – ‘Manchuria was my masterpiece’, he remarked.27 From Manchurian bureaucrat, Kishi turned wartime politician in Toj o Hideki’s cabinet. As an expert planner, he led the Ministry of Munitions, the forerunner of the postwar Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI).28 Coming closer than anyone to an ‘imperial fascist’, Kishi was arrested by Occupation authorities and imprisoned as a suspected Class-A war criminal, but released without charges by Occupation authorities in 1948. He returned to political life in 1952 and became prime minister in 1957.
While Kishi professed himself a ‘democrat’, it is clear that, as Kang SangJung observed, ‘a thought core straddled [Kishi’s] pre and postwar’, namely a ‘patriotism’ that was grounded in state power and ‘national pride’.29 Asianism, too, remained a constant in Kishi’s thought – until old age he remained firm that the ‘fundamental principles’ behind the East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere were ‘not mistaken’ (Iwami 1994, 193). In the postwar period, Asianism was, in fact, bound up with patriotism. For Kishi, just as postwar Japan had to free itself from the US-drafted ‘colonial Constitution’ to regain its honour, so it had to reconstruct a sphere of interest through a ‘medium-sized imperialism’ to feed its population.30 But, given that the age of formal empires had passed, Kishi resolved to turn to more informal solutions to recast Japanese power, such as that presented by the MRA Asia Center.
Kishi earmarked Southeast Asia as Japan’s new sphere of influence in Asia. That is why, upon becoming prime minister in 1957, he visited Southeast Asian leaders even before flying to Washington (he wanted to make it clear to president Eisenhower that Japan was still the ‘centre of Asia’, or, as he put in private, that ‘Japan stands alone, like Mount Fuji, to dominate in Asia’).31 As it turned out, however, Kishi’s Southeast Asian diplomacy faced a hurdle. While during the two trips undertaken that year he settled some questions of wartime reparations, Southeast Asian leaders were by and large reluctant to sign up to the Asian Development Fund, the tool whereby Kishi hoped to integrate the region into Japan’s economic sphere. There was, especially in countries such as Burma, Indonesia, and the Philippines, which had been subjected to brutal Japanese occupation in the Second World War, much lingering resentment toward Japan. It did not escape Southeast Asian leaders that Kishi’s strategy bore parallels with the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, anathema also because they believed that their new-found political independence hinged on economic independence. Kishi’s proposals, as the Manila Times commented, came with ‘inbuilt boobytraps’ (Kurzman 1960, 319; Hatano and Sato 2007, 58–59).
The setbacks he encountered in his Southeast Asian diplomacy explain why Kishi turned to MRA. To rebuild an Asian regionalism centred on Japan it was of paramount importance that the countries of Southeast Asia ‘trusted’ Japan.32 MRA were reconciliation specialists, with established networks across Asia, who appeared capable to bring to fruition informal diplomacy where the official one had hit a wall. Kishi had recognized MRA’s mastery of the art of public diplomacy since the early 1950s and appointed staff with MRA connections. He had been privy to the numerous MRA initiatives – he attended the performance of The Vanishing Island in 1955, seemingly at the invitation of the actress and singer Tanaka Michiko, a member of the cast and, reportedly, a ‘close friend’ (Entwistle 1985, 147). The politician Hoshijima Niro, an active member of MRA as well as ‘confidant’ of Kishi, also seems to have kept the prime minister updated with MRA activities (Entwistle 1985, 147). He also appointed the ex-Governor of the Bank of Japan Shibusawa Keizo, a central MRA member, to promote economic diplomacy in Southeast Asia (Kishi 1983, 384).
MRA opened crucial avenues to an informal diplomacy of reconciliation with Asian countries through personal channels and practices of compromise. The first instance of Kishi reaching out to it came, not coincidentally, in 1957, the year he launched his Asian diplomacy, by becoming involved in an MRA conference in Baguio, the Philippines. Organized by the core Japanese activists in collaboration with the Filipino section of MRA, the Baguio conference was intended to provide a forum for an unofficial gathering of personalities from Southeast Asia, Korea, and Japan in order to come to terms with past grievances, whether Japan’s wartime atrocities or its colonial rule. MRA lobbied politicians, including Kishi and President Magsaysay, to support the event.33 According to MRA sources, after the ‘former oppressed’ people met the Japanese MRA delegation, participants broke down in tears and proffered forgiveness. Most dramatically, Hoshijima, who attended with Kishi’s ‘consent,’ handed over a Korean national treasure – an ancient stone lion that had belonged to the last Emperor of Korea – to the Koreans as a symbolic gesture. He added that he would ‘go directly back to the Prime Minister and tell [him] that Japan must settle the claims that they now hold in Korea to property and monies’.34 Until then, in fact, the Japanese government had advanced property claims in Korea and claimed that its rule had been economically beneficial for Korean development – two positions that profoundly angered the Korean position. After Baguio, however, Kishi reportedly promised that he had ‘no intention of holding to our past legal interpretations’ and that he would withdraw the Kubota statement.35 It would not be until 1965 that Japan and Korea formally resumed diplomatic relations, but Kishi’s earlier unofficial diplomacy shows his determination to mend fences as a first step to reposition Japan to power in Asia.
In later years, Kishi pursued an ever bolder collaboration with MRA. All these initiatives were presented under the umbrella of Asian regionalism. In May 1959, for example, MRA held a conference in Otsu, near Kyoto, to discuss such questions as the ‘unity of Asian nations’, the ‘creation of an Asian continent that gives an answer to a divided world’, and the ‘purification of our nations from top to bottom, in order to give them the certainty of an incorruptible leadership’. Supporting messages were sent by Ngo Dinh Diem, the president of the Republic of Vietnam, the former prime minister of Burma, U Nu, and the General Secretary of the Arab League, Abdel Khalek Hassouna. Kishi welcomed the attendees, writing that ‘I have great respect for MRA, because it builds unity among nations on the basis of morality’.36 It was with these goals in mind that Kishi matured the idea of supporting the MRA Asia Center in Odawara.
Our conventional knowledge of Kishi ends with this resignation after the ANPO protests in 1960, but he continued his involvement in politics behind the scenes, and his fight for an Asian regionalism of the right is one such example. Having intervened for the MRA Asia Center as prime minister, he also championed it in later years, as emerges from a letter Kishi sent to the South Vietnamese strongman president, Ngo Dinh Diem, probably in early 1962. Kishi praised Diem’s ‘statesmanlike action’ to invite Japanese students to stage the MRA play The Tiger. He declared himself ‘convinced that now more than ever before the free people of Asia must unite in a common bid to save freedom, and this play is such an action’. He then urged Diem to attend the inauguration of the MRA Odawara Center. ‘Odawara, he explained, will be the first center in Asia wholly dedicated to training leadership in all fields and the youth in an ideological answer to Communism’.37
Kishi’s embrace of MRA, however, went beyond simple Cold War logic. The encounter between MRA discourse and Kishi’s Pan-Asianism led to a grey area of conceptual ambivalence, as seen in the meanings attached to ‘East’ and ‘West’. MRA envisioned Japan as a ‘third way’ between East and West, understood in Cold War terms, where East referred to the Communist bloc and West to the Free World. Conservatives such as Kishi, however, gave East–West a different meaning, much in line with the prewar rhetoric of East as Asia, and West as Euro-America. As argued by Ikeda, for example, when Foreign Minister Shigemitsu Mamoru talked in those years about ‘Japan as a bridge between East and West’, he meant that Japan would ‘reconcile Asian anticolonialism with the countries of the West’. Kishi’s mantra of ‘Japan as a member of Asia’ needs to be seen in the same light – that it was ‘Japan’s special place and mission’ to mediate between these two civilizations (Ikeda 2016, 38). Kishi, in other words, co-opted MRA rhetoric to repurpose the ideology that underpinned the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere for which Kishi had worked with conviction during the Second World War.
Ultimately, MRA, and its Asia Center in particular, added legitimacy to Japan’s wartime Pan-Asianism, by staging Asian unity through an aesthetics that evoked simultaneously the tropes of the Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere and those of the Bandung Conference (Figures 4, 5, and 6). As Naoko Shimazu has argued, the Bandung Conference developed important rituals and symbolism to present the ‘esprit de corps’ of newly independent nations and, in so doing, remained a model for a ‘variety of post-colonial experiences’ (Naoko 2014, 1, 6). Indeed, the imagery of Asian leaders at Bandung, which cast them as subjects of history – forward looking, diverse yet united – was also appropriated by MRA with the crucial difference that Japan, through Kishi, was added into the mix. Odawara was Kishi’s response to Bandung – it was a Bandung of the right, part of his vision to move Asia, and Southeast Asia in particular, away from the neutralism of the non-aligned movement and to tie it instead to a regional order in which Japan was the linchpin. At Bandung, Japan had played a marginal role, largely as observer; Kishi was determined to restore it to a central place.38 But this co-optation meant recapturing the aesthetics of the discourse of the Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere, in which Japan played the role of the leader of Asia. In hijacking the symbolism of the Bandung Conference through MRA, Kishi proposed a vision of Asia that ran counter to Bandung itself, and which lent legitimacy to Japan as an independent actor in Cold War Asia.

How to Encourage a Positive Attitude in Students?
Negative thinking is a massive barrier. It limits your potential, prevents you from making progress, and halts your forward momentum in life, whether you're seeking knowledge, personal development, or happiness. Parents have a significant impact on their school-aged children's development, whether they are homeschooled or enrolled in the top school in Odisha. Thus, parents of K-12 students can witness firsthand the remarkable changes that take place when their children learn to value themselves and maintain an optimistic outlook.
Present Yourself as an Example
What better method to encourage optimism than to create an upbeat atmosphere? Post numerous quotes that are examples of optimistic attitudes as you establish a homeschool classroom bulletin board or planner or as you design your child's online school workplace. Create some fun by making magnets out of your favourite motivational sayings and sticking them to the fridge. When your kid faces academic problems and possibilities, a happy environment can do wonders to eliminate negative thinking and encourage a healthy learning mindset.
Help Students Visualise Positive Outcomes
Having regular goal-setting sessions with your student is crucial, as is explicit outlines the conditions under which they will be successful. Consider how it will feel when you finally succeed. To what extent will you be rewarded? How should one define success, and why does it even matter? Teaching your pupil the answers to these questions can help them develop a more optimistic outlook and focus on the bright side of things.
Avoid Negative Talk
Take a deep breath and relax when your pupil says, "I can't do it." Communicate this negative outlook to your kid. Try to get to the bottom of the deeper meaning. Inquire as to what is holding you back and create a strategy for overcoming it. You may change your child's "I Can't" into a "We Can" by showing them that you are in this together.
Be Their Biggest Fan
Your attitude as a parent or Learning Coach in an online school setting can have a profound effect on your child's sense of competence. They will develop the same traits if you have faith in your student. As a parent, you might want to try out some of these self-acceptance exercises to help your child recognise his or her individual qualities. When this happens, the learner can start thinking more positively, building self-esteem, and accepting who they are as an individual.

Mapping Out Memories for Your Journey Through Italy
Planning a trip to Italy is an exhilarating experience, as the country offers a wealth of history, stunning landscapes, and a vibrant culture. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, an effective Italy trip planner can help you navigate the diverse regions, ensuring you make the most of your journey. Here’s a guide to assist you in planning a trip to Italy. 1. Define Your Travel Goals
Before diving into the logistics, take a moment to reflect on your travel goals. Are you interested in art and history? Or perhaps you want to indulge in culinary delights or soak up the sun on picturesque beaches? Defining your interests will help shape your itinerary.
2. Choose Your Destinations
Italy is rich with incredible destinations, each offering unique experiences. Here are a few must-visit places to consider:
Rome: The capital city, brimming with ancient history. Don’t miss the Colosseum, Vatican City, and the charming Trastevere neighborhood.
Florence: The heart of the Renaissance, home to iconic art galleries like the Uffizi and the stunning Florence Cathedral.
Venice: Known for its romantic canals and rich history, explore St. Mark’s Basilica and take a gondola ride.
Amalfi Coast: A stunning coastal region perfect for relaxation, hiking, and enjoying breathtaking views.
Cinque Terre: A collection of five colorful villages perched on cliffs, ideal for hiking and exploring.
3. Plan Your Itinerary
Once you've chosen your destinations, it’s time to create your itinerary. Here are some tips:
Duration: Determine how many days you can spend in Italy and allocate time to each destination. A week is ideal for a trip covering 2-3 cities.
Transport: Research transportation options, including trains, buses, and rental cars. Italy has an extensive train network, making it easy to travel between cities.
Must-See Attractions: Prioritize key attractions and book tickets in advance to avoid long lines, especially for popular sites.
4. Embrace the Local Cuisine
Italian cuisine is world-renowned, and experiencing local dishes is a must. Create a list of regional specialties to try, such as:
Pasta in Rome: Carbonara or Cacio e Pepe
Florentine Steak in Florence: A hearty T-bone steak served with a side of local vegetables
Seafood in Venice: Freshly caught fish, risotto, and cicchetti (Venetian tapas)
Pizza in Naples: Authentic Neapolitan pizza with a thin crust and fresh ingredients
Consider joining a cooking class or a food tour to delve deeper into Italy's culinary heritage.
5. Immerse Yourself in Culture
Italy's rich cultural heritage offers endless opportunities for exploration. Attend a local festival, visit museums, or take part in traditional activities such as olive oil or wine tastings. Engaging with locals will enhance your understanding of the Italian way of life.
6. Allow for Flexibility
While having a plan is essential, allow for spontaneity. Some of the best travel experiences happen when you stray from your itinerary. Leave some time open for leisurely strolls, impromptu stops at charming cafes, or exploring hidden gems.
7. Capture Your Memories
Don’t forget to document your journey! Bring a good camera or use your smartphone to capture the stunning landscapes, delicious meals, and unforgettable moments. Consider starting a travel journal to reflect on your experiences and keep track of your favorite spots.
Conclusion
With careful planning, your Italy trip can become a remarkable adventure filled with rich experiences and cherished memories. Use this guide as a starting point for your Italy trip planner, and get ready to immerse yourself in the beauty, history, and flavors of this enchanting country.

10/16/24: Emotional Development
Firstly, I need to stop putting pressure on myself to make Journaling Every Day TM happen. I think it's a good long term goal, and maybe I can start putting it in my planner, but I seem to journal whenever I have something I want to write down and that's been working.
Secondly, I just finished listening to a video on emotional developmental delays in people with dysfunctional childhood family dynamics, and my big takeaway is this:
Despite my own delays and uncomfortable emotions like shame and anger, BOTH my parents were extremely lacking in emotional resources throughout my life and that's something I can forgive. I'm not quite all peace and love about it yet, but my anger and resentment is tempered.
Lately my mom often remarks on how I've been growing and maturing recently, and historically she's often said to me in times of conflict that she learns from me. I've given so much parenting advice to my parents throughout the years (with varying levels of implementation), and what I've realized in reflecting on it is that both my Mom and my Dad come from their own Emotional Development Deficits as well as a culture that doesn't recognize such things. Yeah it sucks that I now have to deal with my own deficits but they're doing everything that they know how to do to support me right now, and that gives me safety and refuge to figure all this stuff out now.
I've spent much of the past month stressed from school and resentful towards my Dad about my childhood. Yelling at me for hours when I stole my mom's credit card for Wizard101, yelling at me for not understanding decimal multiplication or whatever, honestly its a lot of yelling lolol. I resented him for recent stuff too, for never being able to understand his own psychology, not being willing to learn. For constantly trying to connect with me socially while never offering me an apology for causing me pain earlier this year. Certain hormonal changes certainly played a role in it, but now that those are settling down I'm settling down too.
*gotta make lunch or I won't have time to eat before class lol*
Perhaps its distance making the heart grow fonder, or at least less agitated. I have the house to myself for another six days or so, and it's been very enjoyable to have this freedom. I've also been looking at condos in Aurora, thinking about the future and living on my own. For once in my life it's exciting to imagine the near future.
Okay that's it for now.

Navigating the World of Experience Coordinators in Saudi Arabia
In recent years, Saudi Arabia has witnessed a remarkable transformation in its event landscape, with experienced coordinators at the forefront of this evolution. As the country embraces cultural initiatives and entertainment diversification, the role of these professionals has become increasingly vital. Navigating this dynamic world can be both exciting and challenging, particularly for those seeking to create memorable events that resonate with their audiences.
Experience coordinators are more than just planners; they are storytellers who craft unique experiences tailored to the needs and desires of their clients. In a region rich with history and tradition, these coordinators blend local customs with modern themes, ensuring that every event reflects the essence of Saudi culture while appealing to contemporary tastes. From corporate gatherings to weddings and cultural festivals, the creativity and attention to detail that these professionals bring to the table can transform any occasion into a remarkable celebration.
One of the key elements to consider when working with experience coordinators is their understanding of logistics. Organizing an event in Saudi Arabia requires not only creative vision but also meticulous planning and coordination. These professionals excel at managing various aspects, including venue selection, vendor coordination, and on-the-day execution. By collaborating with an event management company in saudi arabia , clients can leverage their expertise to ensure that every detail is flawlessly handled.
Moreover, the rise of technology has significantly influenced how events are executed. Experience coordinators are progressively leveraging digital tools and platforms to elevate the entire experience. From live streaming events to engaging audiences through social media, technology has opened new avenues for interaction and engagement. By embracing these advancements, coordinators can create immersive experiences that captivate attendees, ensuring that events leave a lasting impression.
Another crucial factor is the significance of effective communication and teamwork. Successful events depend on solid collaborations between clients and coordinators. Open communication guarantees that all parties are on the same page regarding goals, vision, and expectations. Coordinators who actively listen to their clients and adapt to their feedback are more likely to deliver successful events that exceed expectations.
As the demand for high-quality events continues to rise, experience coordinators in Saudi Arabia are honing their skills and expanding their networks. Participating in industry workshops and networking events helps these professionals remain informed about the newest trends and best practices. This dedication to growth not only improves their services but also plays a significant role in the broader advancement of the event industry in the region.
In conclusion, navigating the world of experience coordinators in Saudi Arabia offers a wealth of opportunities for those looking to create unforgettable events. By partnering with skilled professionals who understand the local landscape and embrace innovative practices, clients can bring their visions to life. The vibrant event scene in Saudi Arabia is evolving, and with the right guidance, any occasion can become a remarkable celebration that resonates with participants long after the last guest departs.
