Once Upon a Time chapter 9
Danny is still going through it, but it gets better I promise.
Taku note: jesus fuck putting the links in on these ones was a beast. I actually had to LOG IN to tumblr on my COMPUTER. ick.

There is some texting abbreviations here. The abbreviations are: B, meaning Bruce, obviously. It is saved as just ‘B’ in his phone. R, meaning Replacement which is Tim. Tim is saved as Replacement. DB is Damian, saved as Demon Brat. D, is Dick, and is just saved as an eggplant emoji in Jason’s phone. This may or may not be relevant later.
—-
Okay. Okay. He needs a plan. He needs to think and form a plan. He needs a computer. He grabs a notebook. Scrambles around his upturned apartment until he finds a pen. Starts writing equations. The equations will solve to binary numbers. Each one a different letter. His brain is humming. He double checks his work. Triple checks it. Tears the page out.
Checks the work again.
He grabs a bit of his remaining cash. Climbs out onto his fire escape. Phases his hand through the glass to carefully reset the trap.
Move on silent feet, sticking to shadows. Hoodie on and hood over his head. Silent and fast. Alert. Find an Internet cafe. Buy an hour of computer time. Log onto the conspiracy site. Send a new private message.
Carefully type in the equations with shaking hands. Time ticks by so slowly and yet so fast. Equations come back to him. Solve. Translate. Read. Send more back. More frantic than before. They have to run. They have to hide. They cannot come here.
He received a picture of a chocolate bar in return.
They’re coming here. They’re coming. They’re coming and Danny can’t stop it. Can’t stop any of it.
He deletes the messages. Logs out of the website. Clears the history. Takes the paper. Leaves the building. Burns the paper to ash.
Hears a van. Pulls his hood further down over his head. Has to get to the observatory. That was the agreed upon meeting place. Has to get there. Has to hide.
Has to find a way to keep them safe. He’s out of practice. He doesn’t have the upper hand. He’s so scared. Scared for his friends. He gets to the observatory. It’s dark in there. Locked. Danny finds a ladder. Climbs. On the roof. The dome is solid. Cold. Damp. He sits in the shadow of the lens. He waits.
Time moved. Time stood still. Heavy cloud cover meant he couldn’t watch the passage of time in the moon and stars. That was Gotham. Last clear night or day was a long time ago. Danny couldn’t breathe.
Loud footsteps. He pressed himself deeper into the shadows.
“D…?” The voice was familiar. Danny peered out into the darkness, and saw two familiar faces.
“Tuck… Sam…” he croaked, voice raw like he had just spent hours Wailing.
“Hey Danny, good to see you.” Sam sat beside him and wrapped an arm around his shoulders. The Fenton Creep Stick laid across her lap. Tucker came to join them, sitting on his other side and rifling around in his backpack. Before Danny could process it, a couple high protein granola bars and a bottle of strawberry pedialyte was put on his lap.
“Eat. Panicking burns calories and you need them.” Tucker insisted, nudging him gently. Already Danny felt the panic subsiding, leaving him exhausted. He ate the protein bars mechanically, forcing himself to focus on the taste and the feel of them between his teeth. He needed the nutrients desperately. After the protein bars were eaten, Danny chilled the bottle of strawberry drink and popped the cap off, chugging it.
“Alright. Now that you’re sort of fed and hydrated, breathe. You know I love the whole dead vibe as much as the next girl, but you’re still half human.” Sam rubbed his leg with her free hand and Tucker rubbed his back. It was soothing and almost involuntarily he took a deep breath in and out, then another, and another. He felt his mind settle. When he could finally think clearly again, he pulled them both close in a hug.
“Ancients, I’ve missed you guys…”
“Us too man. Us too,” Tucker agreed, squeezing Danny back just as tightly.
“Now, not to turn you back onto a doom spiral, but what the hell happened?” Sam asked once they pulled back from the embrace.
“Well, it’s kind of a long story. But I’ll tell you everything.” And Danny did. He started with getting enrolled in school, which they knew, because Tucker helped. Then with the cute guy that befriended him out of nowhere, and although he kept the name to himself, Sam clocked his crush almost immediately.
“It’s okay Danny, I have a radar for that. You were in love with me for how many years now?” She teased. “I am now able to spot a Danny-crush from a hundred yards.”
Tucker laughed with her and Danny groaned putting his head back in his hands. “I hate you so much sometimes…” he moaned.
“Yeah we love you too buddy.” Tucker patted him again. “Keep going with the story.”
He did. The tutoring, the meetings with red hood, and then finally, the week before and that evening. Again he left out the fact that he recognized Hood’s real identity. Sam and Tucker wouldn’t tell, but he couldn’t out another hero in good conscience. Even if they were fighting.
“Shit man.” Tucker scooted himself closer, while Sam did the same on his other side. “That was…”
“I’d rather fight Skulker and Technus together without my powers or a thermos…” he mumbled, pulling his knees to his chest and pressing his face into them.
“Okay. So here’s what we’re going to do. Tucker is going to make sure none of his trip lines have been tripped, I’m gonna make sure no creeps sneak up on us here. You’re gonna take a nap. You look like you’re about ready to drop dead again.” Danny nodded into his knees, and Tucker got out his pda and got to work.
Slowly, Danny’s breathing evened and slowed then stopped almost completely. Having his friends nearby meant he was safe. Safety meant sleep.
Jason was out looking. He started at Danny’s apartment, but he wasn’t answering, there was no sound of movement, the thermals were all ambient, so he moved on.
The longer he looked the more he realized, he barely knew anything about Danny. Danny was great at hedging around questions about himself. Turning the conversation back to Jason, or topics that were safe. The weather, the best places to get burgers, the best type of tree to climb, the best dangerous animal to be freed from the zoo. That last topic was courtesy of Damian but…
Then Jason remembered. They had been eating outside after dark. Danny had looked up at the sky and sighed, then pointed fries accusingly at Jason. “Your dad is like, richer than anyone else here right? He should really do something about all this smog. Seeing the stars at night is one of life’s great pleasures.”
“You could go to the observatory,” Jason had suggested, fairly used to Danny occasionally having ideas for Bruce’s money without any real interest in using it for himself. Always for the betterment of the city as a whole.
“That’s a last resort option. Nothing beats constellation spotting laying on a rooftop. You should be able to see Orion’s Belt over….” Danny looked up at the sky, head shifting as he oriented himself to north and then pointing “over there, somewhere.”
“Well, I’ll bring it up and see what WE has in the works for ecological initiatives.” Jason had said, taken in by how certain Danny was. He could have been bullshitting Jason, but sure enough when he looked it up later, Danny had the right idea, even if he was a few degrees off in his estimation.
Not having any better idea, Jason sped off towards the observatory.
Danny had been asleep for maybe an hour when the motorcycle was heard pulling up. Tucker turned off his modified PDA, the backlight in the screen would have given them away in a heartbeat.
Once the motorcycle turned off though, Sam woke up Danny. He woke with a silent start, looking around to see what had alarmed his friends. When he felt the familiar press of another halfa’s core he pressed a hand to each of their knees and wrote a small smiley face on them. Danny did not miss the way Sam’s grip on the creep stick tightened.
Jason didn’t immediately think anything of the observatory as he circled it. There were two hot spots on the roof that were likely just horny teenagers. He would make his loop and then head off. At least, that was the plan until he spotted the ice cold person shape between the two warmer ones.
Nobody ran that cold except Danny.
Jason stood at the base of the ladder and considered his options. He didn’t know who Danny was up there with. He didn’t know if Danny was in danger. Though the pit in him wasn’t any more riled up than it normally was. He didn’t know if Danny would throw his ass right off the roof. There wasn’t anything around here for him to grapnel onto if he was.
‘I did not know your trip into the pit made you a coward, Todd’ he could hear Damian taunt in his head.
Shaking the thought of his brother off, Jason climbed the ladder. The moment his helmet popped over the roof Danny’s eyes were fixed on him. “Go away J-Hood.”
Jason was momentarily surprised, Danny had obviously not expected him to come in costume, but corrected himself fairly flawlessly. Not outing him to the two people who were holding him protectively. Must be Sam and Tucker.
“I’m not going to hurt you. Are these your friends?” He asked, not moving any further up the ladder. Danny nodded, continuing to glare over his knees.
“Sam and Tucker. They knew me… before everything else.”
Jason nodded. Climbed up enough to get a good look. “I have a safe house nearby. Can we go there and talk?”
“Is more of your little guano group” Sam snickered at the name and Tucker gave Danny a fist bump, “going to hunt me down if I don’t?”
“No. But you’ll want to hear what I have to say.”
Danny looked between his friends for a minute, before slowly uncurling and standing, helping his friends up. “Fine.”
Once they were all on the ground they walked to the safe house, a couple blocks away. Once they were inside, Jason pulled off the helmet.
“Jason Todd. Also known as Red Hood.”
He noticed Sam give Danny a look, and he made a face back at her. Tucker rolled his eyes. “You talk to the Bat?” Danny asked, rather than confront his friend.
“Yeah. But that’s not the important part. After we talked tonight Oracle noticed something. The firewall was an automatic scoop. Anything related to your parents’….hobby got thrown into a…. Technological bucket. It’s why your messages never made it to the League.”
Danny took a step back, and Sam and Tucker automatically moved closer, supporting him. “You…. Heard the messages?”
“There was video too. Of… an attack.”
“Of course those assholes were filming it.” Sam tightened her grip on the creep stick as she spoke. Danny raised a shaking hand to his face, feeling for something. His eyes had gone unfocused.
Damn it. Jason took a step forward and Danny flinched, the air going cold. “Easy D.” Tucker soothed. “You’re in Gotham. We’re gonna go sit.” Sam and Tucker bullied Danny to the couch. Tucker sat next to him, while Sam stood in front of them protectively. When she caught Jason trying to look around her she snapped to get his attention.
“Hey, Danny needs some water. About 35 degrees if you have it that cold, cold as you have otherwise.” The snapping and hyper specific orders placed her in his memory. Samantha Manson. Daughter of the Amity Mansons. They attended a few Galas when she was younger. She was very insistent on her veganism even then.
Jason wasn’t about to argue with a woman holding a bat. If Sam was anything like his brothers, she knew how to use it even before the vigilante training.
He brought Danny water, tap with a couple of ice cubes, and passed it to Tucker, who was still talking quietly to Danny. Danny was nodding and occasionally giving a thin half smile, but was able to hold the glass on his own and sip from it.
“We need a plan.” Danny said after he finished drinking.
“Batman wants to talk to you.” Jason told him, which got Danny opening his mouth to protest.
“First,” Sam interrupted, looking at Danny then at Jason, “Tucker is going to do his checks, Danny is going to sleep, and we are going to wait.”
“I don’t need to sleep.” Danny crossed his arms, protesting.
“And Dash didn’t shove you in a locker at least once a week.” Tucker’s response was combined with an eye roll. “You look like you just went a dozen rounds with Skulker without your powers. You need pizza rolls and a nap.”
“You make me sound like I’m a kindergartener.”
“I think I have pizza rolls.” Jason interrupted the protest. “I’ll kill the lights, make the brat’s pizza rolls for you and you just lay there until they’re done.”
Danny scowled at Jason for hanging up on him but as Tucker slid off the couch onto the floor in front of him, Danny obediently laid down. As Jason pulled the bag out of the freezer and started the oven heating, he watched Danny’s breathing slow down and even out, then stop altogether.
Sam followed his gaze and took Danny’s sleeping form in quickly before peering at what Tucker was doing. Seeing that the people Danny knew the longest weren’t concerned about his lack of visible breathing, Jason settled a bit, texting the family chat.
From J: so I found Danny. But he has backup now. He managed to get in contact with his friends.
From B: Are you on your way?
From J: no. He was freaking out. Right now he’s asleep on the couch and I’m making pizza rolls.
From DB: Excuse me zombie child, those happen to be mine.
From J: Better learn to share now before you learn the hard way like Dickie, Timber and I did.
From B: Jason, please.
From J: what? It’s not a lie. He’s the fourth Robin that we know about.
From DB: I am the best. I will not be replaced.
From R: idk Dami, the new kid has black hair, blue eyes and a troubled past. He’s adoption bait. Hopefully he didn’t lie about his age and really is older than you.
From D: it’s never easy having to hand over the spandex and cape to a younger more dangerous Robin.
From DB: So you admit that I am the best.
From D: no I said you were younger and more dangerous than we were as Robin. Except for maybe Jay. He liked to bite criminals.
From J: hey! They were the idiots who put their hands near my face. I grew up hungry. You eat what you can.
From B: Before this gets more out of hand, Jason, do you know about when you will be arriving?
From J: probably going to leave here in 45 minutes to an hour. I will let you know.
Jason was going to take his time cooking those pizza rolls correctly. He wasn’t going to let them ooze out everywhere, then they would have to cool so when Danny inevitably wolfed them down he wouldn’t scorch his mouth. Allow for some wake up time…
Jason was completely, and understandably in his opinion, giving Danny as much time before the meet the family scene happened. The guy had been through enough.

Series Masterlist
Working as a secretary at Miller & Son's Construction had its highs and lows. You loved the job. The pay was great, and all the guys treated you impeccably, but there was just one slight problem that, if you were honest with yourself, wasn't really a problem but more of a personal issue.
You were in love with Joel Miller.
At 21, Joel was already shaping up to be a fine businessman, taking on a lot of the work from his father so that Cole Miller and his wife Lucia could take more time for themselves. The youngest Miller brother Tommy was shaping up to be a troublemaker. At 17, he was often out drinking with his friends and getting himself arrested and it had fallen to Joel to bail his little brother out every time.
You were a year younger than Joel but as he always said, years ahead of him on the maturity scale. You had always been an old soul but that hadn't stopped you from developing the biggest schoolgirl crush on Joel the day you had started, two years ago. What had started off as a temporary job before you went off to college became permanent when your mum had gotten sick and your dreams of going to college were dashed.
Her illness took her a year after she had been diagnosed and with no father to speak of, you were left alone in the house you'd grown up in. Alone, with nothing but the photos on your walls for company. That time had been what had brought you and Joel closer together but had also forged your crush into what it was now. Unrequited love.
Or so you thought.
"Sup Pip." Said Joel as he placed a paper coffee cup down beside your keyboard "How's my favourite secretary this mornin'?"
"I'm you're only Secretary Miller." You chuckled as you picked up your cup to take a sip and hummed at the perfect coffee flavour that exploded across your taste buds "Better now you've brought me coffee."
"Always happy to assist Pip." He said with a wink and you prayed your flushing cheeks didn't give away how much his wink affected you.
Pip had been a nickname Joel had affectionately given you around three months after you had started. You had been eating a plum at your desk, not a care in the work and engrossed in the customer email that you were reading that you hadn't noticed that the next bite you had taken had contained the pip. Joel had walked in just in time to witness you choking and, using his first aid training he'd acquired just the week before, had managed to save you from a fruity death.
From that day he had called you pip.
Because you'd almost choked on one.
"Anything I need to know about before I head to the site?" Joel asked, pulling you from the memory of your near-death experience and you shook your head slightly before giving him what you hoped was a bright smile.
"Yes." You replied as you pulled out the list you had compiled for him "A Mr and Mrs Cork have emailed, wanting a quote for an extension and kitchen refit." You stated as you handed him the email with a post it note with their number on top "You have a call with a new cement supplied at 2 and Gloria Mullins called this morning asking that you call her when you get a chance, apparently her boiler is on the fritz again."
"I need to tell that woman one of these days that I'm not a plumber." He chuckled to himself as he took the rest of the notes from you.
"You just need to stop being so nice." You chuckled "You've set their expectations now."
"I think you're probably right." Joel chuckled as he grabbed his own coffee cup and took a large swig "Anything else?"
"There's just one more thing." You said shyly as you smiled awkwardly "I need to duck out a little earlier today."
"Hot date?" Joel asked and you knew he could see you blushing now.
"Actually yeah." You answered as you looked down at your hands, missing the way Joel's expression dropped "Simon asked me to dinner."
"Simon Richards?" He asked and you nodded "Oh, wow. I uh... I didn't realise you were into him." Joel shrugged before taking another sip of coffee to try and settle his nerves.
"Well, he's cute and sweet and it's not like I have guys lining up to ask me out." You replied, your smile almost sad "So I thought I should at least go. See if there's any chemistry there."
"Sure... Of course."
Joel knew his response was cold but he couldn't help it. Learning that you were going on a date just made him want to find the nearest pillow and scream. These feelings he had for you drove him crazy and it didn’t help that all his employees knew how he felt about you too. He’d allowed them to plant false hope when they told him that it was obvious you felt the same way. It was becoming painfully clear now that that wasn’t the case.
He needed to get over you.
You couldn’t help but notice the slight icy tone that had coated Joel’s response to your request and you couldn’t help be feel a little confused by it. You never asked for things. Often worked late to make sure everyone and everything was up to date. You would argue that you were one of his hardest workers so sue you for wanting to let your hair down a little.
It’s not like he felt for you the way you did for him.
“Sure.” He said after a short and awkward pause “Lord knows you deserve an early finish.” He chuffed before gathering his bag, the papers you’d given him and his coffee “And, seeing as I won’t be back today and Friday, I suppose I’ll see you Monday!”
“That you will!”
“Enjoy your date, Pip.” he finished before giving you a friendly wave and then leaving.
“I’ll try to.” you said sadly as you watched him walk away.
...
"You are my hero!" Hailed Gloria as she clapped in delight at Joel's handy work.
"Was an easy fix." Joel shrugged as he waved the older woman off.
"You always talk yourself down." She chuckled, her Jamaican accent coming out thicker with her statement.
"I'm just speaking the truth ma'am."
"How many times do I have to tell you to call me Gloria?" The older woman chuckled and Joel winked as he replied.
"At least once more."
"Auntie G... you home?" Came a voice that Joel didn't recognise and he looked up just as the owner walked into the room he had occupied with Gloria.
"Ah, darlin' this is that fine man Joel I was tellin' you about." Said Gloria as she smiled at her niece.
Joel was instantly aware of the fact he was wearing paint-stained jeans and a t-shirt so worn that he was sure this mysterious girl could see his nipples through it.
"Joel, darlin' this is my niece, Eliza." Gloria stated and Joel quickly rubbed his hands down the front of his jeans before taking the hand that was being held out to him.
"Nice to meet ya' darlin'." He said sweetly as he gave her a shy smile "Was just helpin' Gloria here with her boiler. Darn thing needs replacin' really but-"
"I won't replace something just because it's a little saucy with me sometimes.'
"You won't replace it because poor Joel here keeps fixing it for free." Eliza teased and Joel scratched the back of his neck nervously as he replied.
"Well not completely free." He chuckled "She sends me away with weeks worth of food."
"You're too skinny." Gloria chuffed "No girls gonna want to marry a man with no meat on his bones."
Joel chuckled at the older woman's statement before looking back at Eliza who was grinning at him as she practically fluttered her thick black lashes at him.
"Well, I need to get to that meeting I was talking about." Stated Joel as he coughed nervously.
"Don't forget to pop by later for your food!" Gloria ordered as she watched him collect his tools "I made you my famous jerk chicken with rice... peas on the side." She finished with a wink.
"Why on the side?" Eliza asked and Gloria simply rolled her eyes as she said.
"Boy don't like them mixed in."
Eliza mouthed an 'ooooooh' before watching as Joel started to leave.
"I'll see you later to grab that food."
"Or I could bring it by?" Eliz suggested, "You give me your address and I can swing by and drop it off when you're home."
"Oh that's-"
"Ah, splendid idea." Gloria interrupted, leaving Joel looking like a fish out of water "Don't worry dear, I'll give her your address. Get her to drop it by around 9. You're normally home then, right?"
"Right but-"
"9 it is now you best get going or y'all be late." Said Gloria as she practically herded Joel out the door. Leaving him speechless when he made it back to his truck.
What an earth just happened?
...
The restaurant that Simon had brought you to was nice. Not too fancy but not exactly a dive either. Conversations had been a little awkward at first. You'd not really been on many dates but after being honest with Simon about your lack of dating experiences, he put you at ease and now after one glass of wine and a very large meal, the two of you were chuckling away as subjects came easier to you both.
"So how long have you worked for Mr Miller?" You asked as you sipped at your second glass of wine. Simon had already been at the company when you had started and was a few years older than you and Joel.
"More or less straight outa of high school." He replied as he took a swig of his soft drink "Have always been good with my hands so when Cole put up an advert for an apprentice I marched myself over to his office and waited till he got back to speak to him..."
"Wow." You chuckled around the rim of your glass.
"Guy liked my tenacity. Offered me the job on the spot."
"Well, you know my story so..." You trailed off, smiling sweetly at him as he grinned at you.
"So glad you agreed to come out with me." Simon confessed, his cheeks tinging pink "Been wantin' to ask you out a while but didn't outa respect for Joel, but can only wait so lo-"
"What do you mean, out of respect for Joel?" You asked and Simon's expression took on one of a deer caught in headlights.
"Well... with him being into you and all." Simon clarified and your brows drew together as you shook your head.
"Joel isn't into me." You pushed and Simon grew more uncomfortable with each passing moment.
"He's been crushin' on you more or less from day dot." Your date continued when he saw you needed further clarity "We've always teased him for it but he never made a move so I thought, you know, with him not trying to date you it'd be okay for me to."
You weren't sure what to do with the information you'd just received. For years now you had pushed your feelings down for Joel because you believed he didn't return them. So to learn that he might really put a spammer in the works for you.
The subject moved on after that but the atmosphere wasn't as relaxed. After Simon dropped you home, you allowed what he'd told you to run on repeat in your brain. Keeping you from getting to sleep until late that night. Yet, you came to a decision before you finally drifted off. You were going to go to Joel's in the morning and ask him.
You had to be sure.
...
Joel wasn't surprised when there was a knock at his door at 9 pm sharp. He opened the door to see a beaming Eliza on the other side, her arms full of food containers.
"Shit, come in." Joel said before grabbing a few containers to ease the load. "Let me take some of those."
"Auntie G likes to feed you huh?" She chuckled as she followed Joel into his kitchen.
"I had to buy a second freezer." Joel stated and Eliza barked out a laugh, taking Joel by surprise.
"She's always been a feeder." She chuckled before placing the food down beside where Joel had put the other containers "Think it's a Caribbean thing."
Joel chuckled before turning to face his guest.
"Thank you for dropping this by. You really didn't have to go through all the trouble."
"It's not trouble is I offer." Eliz chuckled and Joel chuckled at her reply.
"Either way... that you for bringing the insane amount of food your aunt,
made me over."
"You are quite welcome." Eliza replied as she placed herself within kissing distance of him "I wanted to see you again anyway."
Joel blushed at her statement. Taken aback by how forward she was then, in what felt like the blink of an eye, she was kissing him. Starting softly and gradually growing hotter as tongues tangled.
"I uh... I feel like I should tell you that I'm kinda getting over someone so I'm not looking for anything serious right now," Joel stated and Eliza chuckled.
"Who said I wanted anything serious either?" She whispered against his lips "I think I can be of great help... assisting you in getting over whoever this person is."
Joel looked into Eliza's eyes a moment, trying to discern her endgame. Then, when he was sure that she was being honest with him he kissed her again. The food is forgotten as clothes are discarded in a breadcrumb trail to his bedroom.
...
You let out a steadying breath before knocking on Joel's door. Your slightly shaky left hand clutching the to-go coffee tray that contained your and Joel's favourite coffees. You chuckled when you heard Joel inside, calling out to wait a moment before suddenly opening the door, looking rather flustered.
"Pip." He said as his expression turned from surprised to confused "What are you doing here?"
"I need to talk to you about something." You replied with a smile "I brought you a coffee. Mind if I come in?"
"Now's not a great time... what was it you wanted to talk about?" He replied nervously, smiling awkwardly as you handed him the coffee.
"It's just about something Simon told me on our date last night." You chuckled "You see he said that you have-"
"Who's this?" Asked a woman that you didn't recognise, dressed in a shirt you assumed was Joel's and nothing else. Her brown skin glowing in the early morning light.
"Oh, I didn't realise you had company." You said awkwardly as you started to take a few steps backwards "I'll um... I'll see you Monday." You choked as you fought to keep your tears at bay, but in doing so you missed the step down and went tumbling onto your backside. Your coffee going all over your arm.
"Shit... Pip, are you okay?" Joel shrieked as he leapt towards you, stopping dead when you held your hand up to stop him...
"Fine... I'm fine."
"That coffee'll be skalding." He said as he took another ginger step towards you "We need to get your arm under some cold water or else it'll blister."
"Please just let me go." You choked, your resolve crumbling under the weight of your sadness and embarrassment "I... I just need to go." You affirmed and Joel nodded, giving you a small smile before stepping back into the threshold of his home "Bye Joel."
The older Miller brother watched with concern etched into his features as you left. Glancing at Eliza who was watching you and looking equally worried.
"You think she's okay?" She asked and all Joel could do was shake his head as he replied.
"I don't know."
...
You spent the rest of the weekend dreading Monday morning. You felt like such a fool going over to Joels to, you had hoped, profess your love but instead, you had fallen ass over tit in front of him and his date and burned yourself in the process. Said injury was now wrapped in gauze and throbbing with each knock and graze of your arm on your desk. You had spent the morning wishing you lived somewhere colder so you could hide your accident.
But alas, it's 100 degrees outside and you were forced to wear a short-sleeved blouse. The air-con once again broke at the most inconvenient moment.
"Morning Pip." Said Joel as he stepped into view, placing your coffee down as he did every morning.
"Morning." You replied, not takimg your eyes off your computer screen.
"How's the arm?" He asked upon seeing the brilliant white bandage wrapped around it.
"Killing me." You answered shortly, still not looking at the man who was desperately trying to pry any form of conversation out of you.
After a long, heavy pause, Joel spoke again. His question finally tearing your eyes away from your monitor.
"Did I do or say something to upset you?" He asked, his signature kicked puppy look making your stomach twist.
"No." You answered simply and he nodded.
"What was it that you wanted to talk to me about?" He asked and your brows drew together "On Saturday... you said you needed to talk to me." He clarified "Said Simon had told you something on your date."
"Doesn't matter now." You bluntly replied before returning to the email you'd been writing before.
"Seemed important then."
"Well, it isn't now." You growled, your tone stopping the conversation dead.
"Okay." He couldn't hide how your aggressive tone wounded him. He didn't understand why you were suddenly so cold towards him. What could he have possibly done?
He opened his mouth to speak, only to be interrupted by Simon as he blasted into the office.
"Morning Boss!" He said chirpily before turning his attention to you "Morning beautiful."
"Morning" you replied with a smile that he returned tenfold.
"Fancy going out with me again on Friday?" He asked and you nodded without hesitation "Great!... see you later beautiful."
You grinned at Simon as he left. Not seeing Joel's crestfallen expression.
Perhaps he did need Eliza.

You strolled leisurely through the streets of Brooklyn, Bucky’s vibranium arm draped lovingly over your shoulder, his fingers entwined with yours. The morning had been spent running wedding errands—officially as Pepper’s Maid of Honor, but in truth, you were Tony’s errand-running bitch more often than not.
Not that you minded in the least. You’d do anything for Tony Stark (though you’d rather have your arm re-broken than admit it out loud). Spending the day outside in the sunshine with your boyfriend, dropping off the florist deposits, final invitation proofs, and sketches for the life-size chocolate Iron Man Tony had insisted on to the chocolatier, wasn’t a bad trade-off.
“I think the only reason Pepper agreed to that monstrosity in the first place,” Bucky said, licking his fingers clean of the last of the candy samples the chocolatier had sent out the door with you, “is so that she can ceremoniously chop its head off.”
You laughed in agreement. “He better be grateful that thing’s not anatomically correct, then.” You flashed Bucky a mischievous smile. “Who knows what might happen if she gets carried away? Lord knows he’s pissed her off enough times.”
“Don’t go gettin’ any ideas now, doll,” Bucky teased, pulling you closer planting a kiss on the side of your head. “I’ll have to start worryin’ about you choppin’ parts off a chocolate Bucky at our wedding.”
You pulled away, mock disbelief on your face. “Oh, our wedding, huh? Pretty presumptuous for a guy who’s never even properly proposed.”
Bucky grumbled good naturedly, sliding his arm from your shoulder to your waste. “How many times does a guy have to tell his girl he wants to marry her before she takes him seriously?” he asked, tickling your side through the thin fabric of your lavender sundress.
Squealing, you tried to wriggle free, but he caught you, nuzzling into your neck. “He’s only gotta ask her once” you teased, wrapping your arms around his neck, “if he does it right to begin with.”
“Oh, I’ll do it right,” he promised, his lips brushing yours. “And trust me, doll, when the question comes, you’ll know it’s the real deal.”
You raised a playful brow, glancing pointedly at the empty ring finger on your left hand.. “You keep saying that, and yet…”
Bucky grabbed your hand and quickly pulled it to his mouth, nipping on the inside of your wrist. “Like I said, doll, you gotta trust me.”
The words hit you harder than you expected. Trust him. Once, you thought you’d be able to trust him again, but now…
“You’re serious, aren’t you?” you asked, studying his face.
Bucky’s smirk softened. “Like a heart attack, sweets.” He hesitated, concern flickering in his eyes. “You still doubt me?”
“No.” Your voice was quiet, but certain. You jostled into him as someone brushed by, and he steadied you with a hand on your waist. Guiding him off to the side, you leaned against the building, away from the bustling sidewalk.
“No, baby, of course not. I just…” You blew out a puff of air as you took his hands in yours. “Wow. It’s just… Talking about it in the hypothetical’s been one thing, but knowing you’re actually making plans? That’s something else.”
He frowned as he gently extricated his hand from yours and reached up to brush a strand of hair from your face. “Is that a bad thing, doll?”
“It’s a great thing,” you clarified in a breathy whisper, leaning into his touch. “It’s the best thing, I promise. I just… I just don’t want to fuck it up. I’m so scared I’m gonna fuck it up.”
“Doll,” Bucky let out a relieved chuckle as he pulled you into him, wrapping his body so perfectly around yours, as though it had been made to fit. “Don’t you think I’ve already fucked up enough for the both of us? I think we’ve already more than met our fuck-up relationship quota.”
“Stop,” you pleaded, laughing into the hard plains of his chest. “I’m trying to be serious and vulnerable and shit.”
Bucky’s hands ran comfortingly up and down your spine. “So am I,” he said, his tone warm. “I didn’t deserve a second chance from you, after everything that happened, but you gave me one. I wanna spend the rest of my life making sure you never regret that decision.”
You slipped your hands around his waist under the buttery leather of his jacket and squeezed gently. “I love you,” you told him. “I love you so much, and when you do ask me to marry you, I’m gonna say yes.”
Bucky let out a relieved exhale. “You mean that, doll?” he asked, his voice so soft you almost didn’t hear him. “You’ll marry me? For real?”
“Absolutely,” you leaned back so you could look up at his face. The smile he wore was absolutely breathtaking in its joy. You didn’t think you’d ever seen him look as unabashedly happy as he did in this moment. “Or, at least, I will when you actually propose to me,” you clarified, giving him a mischievous smirk.
“Oh, shut up,” he said with a groan, leaning down to take your lips in his. The kiss flowed over and through you, warming you from the inside out, until your entire body was tingling with the heat of it, but before you could allow yourself to get caught up in it, a sobering thought came over.
“Oh my god, have you talked to Tony yet?” you asked, gripping the lapels of his jacket. While Tony and Bucky had been playing nice over the last year, you weren’t sure how he would react if he thought the two of you were actually going to get married.
Bucky grinned knowingly. “I didn’t realize you were such an old fashioned girl,” he teased. “Should I negotiate the terms of your dowry while I’m at it? Get us a couple of fat cows and a goat to start our life together?”
You gnawed on your bottom lip in a failing attempt to stave off your grin. “Surely you can convince him to throw in at least one pig with that,” you countered. “I know for a fact you can be very persuasive when you want to be.” You playfully nipped at the juncture of his jaw and his neck.
Bucky slipped his hands between your sundress and the denim jacket you wore, sliding his fingers along the line where the fabric met the skin of your back. “I doubt he’s as susceptible to my powers of persuasion as you are, doll,” he teased.
“Probably not,” you conceded, but your voice turned a bit more serious as you continued to speak: “but he’s the closest thing to actual family I’ve got,” you told him, a whisper of sadness on the edge of your voice. “I’m not saying I want you to, like, ask his permission or anything, because, you know… ew, but I really would like him to be onboard. To be happy for us.”
“Aside from Pepper, there’s no one on this planet more important to Tony than you,” Bucky said reassuringly. “If you’re happy, he’ll be happy. That’s all there is to it.”
“If you’re happy, I’m happy,” you told him, pulling him toward you until there was no space left between you.
He pressed a kiss to the top of your head. “Then we don’t have anything to worry about,” he said, grinning. “Because I am happy. And I promise, I’ll make sure Tony’s happy, too.”
“Thank you,” you murmured into his chest. You’d had hopes, once, that Bucky and Tony might have been able to forge some kind of relationship– if not one born from any kind of affection, then from at least a mutual love of and respect for you, but that hope had been dashed after you’d gotten shot.
“I’ll tolerate him for your sake, Kiddo,” he’d said to you when you’d told him you’d decided to work on rebuilding your relationship with Bucky. “But I’m not going to be able to just up and forgive him.”
“You managed to forgive him for your parents, though,” you’d said to him tentatively. “And he wasn’t even the one who pulled the trigger on me.”
Tony’d swallowed his gaze somewhere far away. “Yeah,” he’d said “but he wasn’t in his right mind back then. And they weren’t you.”
“Not that I wouldn’t mind standing here holding you all day, doll,” Bucky said, taking you from your thoughts after a long moment, “but we’ve got to get to the jeweler’s before they close.”
You stepped back and looked up at him, a wave of panic coming over you that you were sure was noticeable on your face. “I thought you said you were making plans! Not that you had plans! Least of all jewelry store plans!”
“Calm down, sweetheart,” Bucky said, kissing the top of your head with a laugh. “Did you forget that last stop we have to make for Stark?”
You exhaled, embarrassed at your mini-freakout. In all the talk of a future with Bucky, you’d forgotten the purpose of your current task for Tony– to have his mother’s wedding band set resized for Pepper. The ring was meant to be a surprise, and since you and Pepper wore the same size, you were the perfect stand-in for this little bit of subterfuge.
“I very much did,” you admitted with a sheepish smile. “What can I say, Barnes? You’ve got me all twitterpated.”
Bucky pursed his lips, taking your hand and leading you down the sidewalk again. “Doll,” he purred, “you know what you do to me when you use ‘40s slang. We’re in public, for cryin’ out loud.”
“Тебе нравится больше, когда я говорю с тобой на русском?” you asked him, your voice dripping into something sultry. Do you like it better than when I speak Russian to you?
Bucky shook his head, pouting slightly. “Нет, никогда.” No, never.
Arriving at the jeweler’s a few minutes early, you were greeted by a man behind the counter who invited you to browse while the jeweler finished things up on a piece he was currently working on in the back. The place was a hidden gem–an artisan’s studio/showroom run by the grandson designer of Tony’s mother’s ring. From the outside, it was unassuming, but inside, it showcased some of the most exquisite (and undoubtedly expensive) pieces you’d ever seen.
You hummed appreciatively as you traced your fingers over the glass of the display case, admiring the intricate filigree and glittering gemstones. Of course, nothing had a price tag. You’d been in Tony’s orbit long enough to know that if you had to ask, you couldn’t afford it.
“See anything you like?” Bucky’s voice was warm as he rested his chin on your shoulder and wrapped his arms around your waist. “Just, you know, in case I ever wanted to get you a Labor Day present or something.”
You turned to give him a skeptical look. “A Labor Day present?”
“Or something,” he repeated, nudging your cheek with his nose.
You snorted out a laugh that felt entirely out of place among such elegance. “Classy,” he teased, swaying you slightly in his arms.
“Everything’s beautiful,” you admitted with a wistful sigh, “but nothing here feels like me, you know?” Bucky hummed, his chin still on your shoulder. The sound vibrated pleasantly through you. “Yeah,” he agreed. “I get that. You play in Tony’s world, but you don’t live in it.”
“Exactly.” You turned to face him, smiling at how easily he understood you. “It’s like, I’m always gonna see myself as that girl from the trailer park in Ohio. Jewelry, fancy cars, designer clothes… it was all so far out of reach, I never even dreamed of it. It’s not what I grew up wishing for.”
Bucky’s face softened in understanding. Growing up during the Depression, he knew what it was like to see even the basics as unattainable luxuries. “What did you wish for, doll?” His voice was quiet, almost reverent.
You chuckled, though it came out a bit hollow. “Well, aside from the obvious…” Bucky nodded, understanding what you didn’t say–that you wished you hadn’t been trapped and trafficked. “I wanted things like getting a real education; not having to teach myself with whatever books I could get at the library. Being allowed to go to school. Having friends. God, I wanted friends so badly. Getting out and never having to worry about looking over my shoulder again.”
You exhaled, steadying yourself. “When you’re just trying to survive,” you said, “shit like this doesn’t matter. It’s just stuff.”
Bucky pressed a soft kiss to the top of your forehead, grounding you. “If you had to have one piece of jewelry,” he said, a teasing edge creeping into his voice, “let’s say, a ring, just as a random, hypothetical example with no bearing in actual reality, whatsoever, what would you want it to look like?”
You smiled, happily leaning into the game. “Well, speaking strictly hypothetically,” you said tapping your chin in thought, “I think I’d want something vintage. Antique. Maybe Art Deco.”
Bucky raised an eyebrow. “Really?”
“Why not?” You shrugged, reaching up to tweak his nose. “I happen to have a soft spot for old, worn down things.”
“I’ll show you old and worn down,” Bucky said, his voice dropping dangerously low. Your heartbeat sped up as you stood on your toes, reaching for him with your lips.
Before you could connect in what you just knew would be a fiery kiss, Bucky’s phone rang.
“Fuck,” he murmured, pressing his forehead to yours. “Lemme let it go to voicemail.”
You licked your lips, gently pushing him back. “Answer it,” you told him. “Could be ‘Very Important World Saving Business’. Besides…” You leaned in conspiratorally. “If we got started, we both know it’d only be a matter of minutes before you had me bent over one of these display cases, fucking me raw on top of all these diamonds.”
Bucky swallowed hard, the tips of his ears turning a delightful shade of red. “And now I have to take this outside,” he muttered, retreating with his phone in hand, “because I definitely can’t look at you and talk to someone at the same time with that image in my head.”
You grinned, waving cheerfully as he stepped out the door, his phone already to his ear. Was it mean to tease him so badly? Yes. Did you enjoy the fuck out of seeing him get all worked up? Also, yes.
No sooner had he left than a voice from behind the counter called out to you. “You are the Stark appointment?”
Turning, you found yourself face-to-face with an impossibly handsome olive-skinned man emerging from the back room. Italian, if you had to hazard a guess. He had a messy head of black curls that seemed to keep falling into a pair of hazel eyes with thick, dark lashes that gave him an effortlessly suave air, accentuated by a slightly aquiline nose that looked like it might have been broken once before; and his lips were sensuously full, with a pronounced cupid’s bow that would meet even Hawkeye’s exacting standards.
You admired him the way you would admire a slice of Tiramisu– it looked positively delicious, and perhaps you would be tempted to take a bite… if you hadn’t already been utterly satiated by the most decadent, rich layered dark chocolate mousse you’d ever hope to have in your entire life. Thank you, but you couldn’t possibly; you had already overindulged.
“Hi, yes.” You extended your hand. “I’m Pocket.” You retrieved the box with Tony’s mother’s ring from your bag. He’d offered to send you with a full security detail but, you figured, if the Winter Soldier couldn’t protect the ring from would-be thieves, nothing could, especially when it was being transported by something he found infinitely more valuable. “I’m here to have this resized.”
The man ignored the box and took your hand instead. “Marco Palombini,” he offered, his accent rich and lyrical.
“Italiano?” you asked excitedly. It wasn’t very often you had the opportunity to practice this particular language skill set of yours.
Marco’s eyes lit up. “Sì! La mia famiglia è di Sabina, appena fuori Roma. E la tu?” Yes! My family’s from Sabina, just outside of Rome. Yours?
“Oh, no,” you replied with a laugh. “Sono americana.” I’m American.
“Davvero?” He looked skeptical. Really? “Allora ci sarai stata parecchio, no?” You must have spent a lot of time there, then, yeah?
You shook your head; it was one place your business responsibilities had yet to bring you. “No, non ci sono mai stata. Però ho sempre voluto andarci, soprattutto a Roma.” No, never. But I’ve always wanted to, especially Rome.
Marco’s gaze softened. “Beh, sono sicuro che Tony Stark non negherebbe alla sua fidanzata bella una luna di miele nella Città Eterna.” Well, I’m sure Tony Stark wouldn’t deny his beautiful fiancée a honeymoon in the Eternal City.
“Dio, no!” you snorted. God, no! “Non sono la fidanzata di Tony. Sono qui solo perché io e lei abbiamo la stessa misura di mani.” I’m not Tony’s fiance. I’m just here because she and I have the same sized hands. You opened the box with Tony’s mother’s ring and slid it across the glass countertop, suppressing a laugh at the absurdity of being mistaken for Tony’s betrothed. The thought was hilariously, ludicrously gross.
Marco’s expression lightened considerably as he tilted his head, a sly smile forming. “Beh, non è una fortuna, allora?” he asked, taking your hand and tracing the lines of your palm with his fingers. Well, isn’t that lucky, then?
Before you could politely extract your hand, a familiar, steadying presence loomed behind you. “Everything good, sweets?” Bucky’s voice held a subtle edge, a clear sign of his displeasure at the sight of Marco’s hand lingering on yours.
“Hey, baby,” you said, fighting the smile that threatened to break through at his obvious jealousy. Sliding your free hand around Bucky’s waist, you rested your head against his side, silently reinforcing that you were unmistakingly his. “Mr. Palombini was just about to measure my finger for the resizing.” You flashed Marco a friendly smile and nodded for him to continue.
Marco’s expression faltered briefly at Bucky’s towering presence, but he recovered quickly, resuming his professional demeanor. He retrieved a set of finger-sizing gauges, slipped one onto your finger, and adjusted it a few times to ensure a perfect fit before jotting down notes in his ledger.
“Should take about ten days,” he said briskly. Moving to the register, he typed up a form, signed it, and handed it to you along with a pen. “Sign here and bring your copy when you pick up the ring.”
“Anyone who has the receipt can come pick up the ring, right?” Bucky asked, his tone pointed as he leaned slightly closer to the counter. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be her?”
You pinched his side lightly, though it was a challenge to find anything but solid muscle. “Behave,” you murmured under your breath.
Marco didn’t flinch, handing you the signed receipt with a calm, professional smile that bordered on smug. “No,” he said, his gaze flicking briefly to Bucky. “We will only release the ring to the person who signed the receipt. Company policy.”
Bucky raised an eyebrow as you tucked the receipt into your wallet. “So, you mean to tell me,” he began, “that if Tony Stark himself showed up with his receipt, you wouldn’t give him his own ring back?”
Marco leaned casually against the counter, arms crossed. “We will only release the ring to the person who signed the receipt,” he repeated, his smirk faint but unmistakable.
You rolled your eyes, deciding you’d had enough machismo for one afternoon. “Great,” you said, taking Bucky’s hand in yours. “Let us know when it’s ready, and we’ll be back to pick it up.”
As Bucky held the shop door open for you, Marco’s voice rang out behind you. “Bella donna!” he called, a mischievous lilt in his tone. You glanced over your shoulder to see him wink. “Quando torni, magari potrei interessarti a un tour privato di Roma!” When you come back, maybe I can interest you in a private tour of Rome!
Shaking your head with a mix of exasperation and amusement, you stepped outside, Bucky right behind you.
“What did he say to you?” Bucky asked, his tone deceptively calm.
“Oh, nothing much,” you replied lightly. “Just invited me to run away to Rome with him.”
Bucky frowned as he took your hand in his. “Not funny, doll.”
“I’m totally serious,” you told him. Bucky stopped abruptly in his tracks, pulling you to a halt. “Hey–” you began.”
“That son of a bitch!” Bucky growled, turning slightly as though he were about to march back inside. “I’m going to–”
“You’re not going to do anything,” you said, gently tugging on his hand to redirect him forward. “He was being a shameless flirt. He’s Italian. It’s practically in his DNA.” Your attempt at humor didn’t seem to land, judging by the dark look on Bucky’s face. “The only thing that matters,” you added more seriously, “is that I’m not into it. I’m into you.”
Bucky sighed and ran a hand haphazardly through his hair. “I know, sweets,” he said. “I’m just not…”
“Not used to being the jealous one for a change?” you teased, swinging his hand in yours as you walked. “Trust me, I know, it’s no fun, which is why I’m being nice and not letting you stew in it.”
Bucky huffed, but the corner of his mouth twitched upward. “Well, thanks for that, I guess.”
You grinned, leaning into him as you walked. “You’re welcome, Barnes. Besides, you’re prettier to look at than he is, anyway.”
The small, satisfied smile on Bucky’s face as he pulled you closer was all the reassurance you needed.

He let out a heavy breath before he ripped his mask off of his face. He wasn't supposed to be out alone considering he was the new crowned emperor. But he was, and he was searching for you and he wasn't gonna give up until he did. He wore heavy clothing to try and hide his identity from others, and a bag that slung around his shoulder consisting of his journal, water, and other things he might need. He settles for the night in a rock. A rock with a beautiful view. He has been on the road for so long, he's forgotten how long, he didn't really care to remember either, considering it would help motivate to find you. He walks around the rock, searching for anything to give him clues of you or if you might've been here.
As he looked around, It was clear that someone had been there before. He looked at the bad attempt of making a bed, but he didn't touch it. His eyes slightly closed from trying to study the bed, there were still prints of a body, maybe two, on the bed. He hunches over. There was a piece of hair, as disgusting as it sounds…he picked it up. It was the same as yours, he took a rather long pause before thinking, maybe he should smell the bed? No, what if he smells something he doesn't like. He shook his head before looking at the single strand of hair that was in his hand. He sat down on the bed, setting the hair gently aside before taking off his glove and putting the strand back in his palm. Everybody's hair could be similar, he thought. He let out a sigh before looking ahead of him. He didn't know what time it was, but all he knew was that he was tired and heart broken. He didn't miss his home, not at all, not with you not there.
He put his glove and his mask back on before placing the hair into his bag. Out of everything that was going on, at least the view was beautiful. He stood and walked to the view of the rock, carelessly taking footsteps before he sighed and dropped down, his legs open and his elbows on his knees as he took in the view. He let in a deep breath. ¨tired. I am tired¨ he let out in a whisper. He fought his sleep often because he knew it would make him less confident and he would grow to slack, but sometimes he just couldn't take it anymore. The yawns leaving his lips, difficulty holding onto the hooks that latched onto the sandworm, but he thought he could finally settle here for a while, as a reward for finding a piece of hair that have a 5 percent chance of being yours.
As he watched the view, he thought of you. He didn't cry as much anymore. When he cried, he cried alone in private. And during that time, he cried until he couldn't anymore. Every time he saw Irulan it made him sick to his stomach. As much as he wanted to blame her, he couldn't. His heart was too good and he knew better than to let a weak desperate moment turn into anger. ¨why did i offer?¨ he would think over and over, countless times, wondering how could he be so careless. But he wasn't, he didn't want to marry her for the reason of love, just wanted to keep her safe as a promise to the retired and overthrown emperor. Thinking about it made him question his character, who has he grown to be? hed remembered what you said, he always thought of the smart and wise things you had to say.
¨its okay to feel how you feel, paul¨ you looked at him with a pity smile on your face while your hand was on his cheek. He had another nightmare. He didn't want it to be true. ¨this is gonna make me go crazy, y/n¨ paul whispered back, leaning into y/ns touch. ¨don't let it fool you, don't let it phase you, don't let it change you¨ you replied. At times, all paul wanted to do was give up. He didnt wanna be the chosen one. It was all too much. He could stay here forever, with you. For all eternity if he could.
Paul sighs and looks to the side. Remembering what you said, he wished things weren't so quiet.he laughed to himself, all the dreams he had of the future, but none of you. He sat alone, all alone, not one book, not one sound, just him, by himself. He felt empty, he wants you, he needs you, he needed someone to make him feel complete again, but days spread thick and long, bored, fighting himself back and forth between hope for finding you and wondering if you had just moved on. He wished he had a dream of you, of your blue eyes glistening in the sun, of your laugh, He wished it was so vivid that he touched you, that he could control his dream and talk to you, make love to you, but he had nothing, nothing at all. Nothing to remember you by, just a stupid suspicious piece of hair, tears brimmed his eyes, he needs you. There was no one he could pray to if he was the chosen one. No matter how hard he fought, how he tried to distract himself from work, it all lead up to one person, not one other thought, never out of sight out of mind, he knew what he wanted and he fell so deep he felt like he just couldn't grasp it anymore, how was he supposed to live his life without you. Your soft gentle hands grazing his face and answering the stupid and goofy questions he asked. There was no one else and he knew that now, didn't even find anyone else attractive. Lonesome nights, he didn't want to be on his own, ever again. Once he found you he vowed to never let you go, no matter how loud your voice is, no matter if you kicked him down, your in his heart and he just cannot let go, but how long could he search? Huh? How long would it be until he found you? When will he hear your voice again? When will he kiss you again? He didn't even say I love you before you walked off, for all he knew, that was his last goodbye.
On the first day, he acted as if nothing happened, but then he realized you weren't there, he couldn't pick at your dinner plate, he could hear your laughs, he couldn't feel your pity hits after he whispers a dirty joke. He had no one to talk to, no one to ask him if he was okay. Was he...okay? Had he known he was okay? Or has he grown so long to the point where he wasnt and he just didn't know it. He wished he said more, begged you to stay, cried about it, weeped about it, there was so much he could've done and he didn't, he only said a short explanation of how he was waiting for you and now he's on the run, on the search. He was so tired, so tired of looking at the same spice on the ground, carving on the rock of the walls. He wanted to be next to you, holding your head in his shoulder, hear your soft snores as you slept like there wasn't a care in the world. He'd never expect this, a life without you. He sighed and shook the thought out of his head, noticing he was in too deep and he wiped the tears that slowly dropped from his face, letting out a sniffle as he looked ahead. He didn't want to be too deep, of course he missed you, but he wanted to find you with a clear conscience, a healthy mind. He needed something to keep him going. His eyebrows furrowed as he looked to the ground. He placed a palm down and leaned closer to the floor. What is this? This imprint on the floor? Looks familiar.
He looked over it, careful not to move or make any sudden movements. ¨y/n?¨ he muttered. Any normal person would've thought paul as crazy, looking like he's searching for spice on the floor, and then wanting to jump and cheer, because, well, because what?
The necklace
The necklace Paul got for her. It was there! Clear as day. What a time to cheer! He couldn't fight off the smile on his lips. She's alive! She's alive! What a joy, out for two years! Been all around Arrakis, and at such a time he was going to give up, go home, force himself to get comfortable with his new situation, you were out there. Shall he go home? To tell stilgar and have a celebration? Sweet red wine sounded like heaven. He wiped his eyes as finally, finally tears came down. Tears of joy, he waited for this moment, oh so long! He was so happy he could take the dirt and put it in his bag also.
He laughed, he found it funny how he grew so tired of being next to his queen that he went and found you himself after he told you to come back. He grew impatient. He took out his journal and wrote, writing his life away as he thought of you, as the warmness of love and hope crowded his vision and spreaded throughout his body. This is all he wanted, to find you. And he was so close, so, so close.
He hadn't felt like this in a long time. He got up and collected the dirt from the necklace in his hand and watched it fall from his gloves. Looking around and seeing the footsteps, all yours he believed! He looked before following the footsteps, he followed them foot by foot until he was in the sand again. He hunched over, trying to search for the footsteps as they were getting lost from the wind of the sand until he couldn't anymore. He stood and pulled out his compass for the direction that you went. When it pointed he saw and lifted his head in the direction you went. This was it, this was the final piece, this was the end.
You were home.

X--X--X--X--X
As it turns out, the team building activity that you were dreading turned out to be Jenga. While unsure how it built team character, it did work on making your more comfortable with the rest of the team. Due to you still being new to the team, you had requested a month to work out by yourself so that you could get back into shape. As horrible as the scientists had been, they did teach you an efficient way to get into peak performance. Working out from 12am till 5am everyday was good enough. Within the third week, you had already noticed the definition of your muscles, you’d put on pure muscle mass, and your stamina plus healing ability enabled you to sprint approximately 20 miles without stopping. It was going well until one day, you were working on the punching bag and were so focused that you lost track of time. It was 7 am when Natasha and Steve returned from their daily run and saw you workout. You hadn’t noticed them due to the music playing out loud. Natasha, however, saw you and immediately ran towards you. You were brought out of your headspace when you saw Natasha grab your arms, unshed tears forming as she stared at your hands. Steve stepped closer and was horrified to find the ground and punching bag covered in blood. Upon closer inspection, he found your hands caked in blood too. You looked at them confused.
“What?” You asked concerned, completely unaware of why they looked white as a sheet.
Natasha and Steve looked at you with wide eyes.
“Why are you covered in blood y/n?” Natasha asked, letting go of your arms now that you’d stopped punching the bag and brought them to her sides.
You looked even more confused.
“I was going to clean it up when I was done?” You said uncertainly.
“Is this… common for you?” Steve asked slowly.
You hesitated for a moment. Natasha seeing your clear discomfort of being caught off guard came up with an idea.
“How about this, y/n cleans up the gym and herself and then the 3 of us can sit together and figure out a.. neater way of you working out?” She suggested.
Before you could say anything, Steve agreed and the two of them walked out. Grumbling you started to clean.
The first thing you noticed was Natasha staring at your hands as you sat down. You leaned towards her and put your hand on her cheek. You didn’t fail to notice the way she almost leaned into your hand.
“I’m completely fine, Nat” You reassured her.
She looked at you with a vulnerability that took your breath away. It was at that moment that Wanda entered the kitchen. She paused as she noticed the two of you, you started to lean back but froze when Nat grabbed your hand and brought it back to her cheek.
“Please” she said, “I need to know you’re okay.. there was so much blood..”
Wanda frowned. Whether she was upset or confused, you weren’t entirely sure. She walked towards the two of you and sat down next to Natasha. Natasha didn’t break eye contact even when Wanda gently rubbed her lower back. You brought your other hand to Natasha’s face and leaned forward and gently kissed her forehead. This seemed to reassure her greatly as her shoulders relaxed.
“I promise you, I’m completely okay” You said softly.
Your eyes darted to Wanda for a second, expecting protectiveness or anger but all you were met with was a warm look of concern that melted your heart.
“I’ll explain everything” you thought loudly.
Wanda nodded her head, indicating she’d heard you. While you’d given her explicit permission to read your thoughts at any given time, she was still hesitant to do so. The three of you stayed like that for a few more minutes until you heard someone’s footsteps nearing. You could physically see Natasha’s walls coming back up, Wanda too. You sat back in your chair but held Natasha’s hand underneath the table. She gently squeezed in gratitude, her face showing nothing. Steve entered the kitchen and faltered when he saw the three of you sitting in silence looking at him with the exact same expression. Clearing his throat, Steve sat down next to you on the opposite side of Natasha. He looked at you expectantly. If he was confused by why Wanda was here, he didn’t show it.
“I was wondering if you could tell us a little bit about what happened in the training room?” Steve asked gently.
You took a deep breath and began.
“Okay so, shortly after I.. um.. got my power.. I went to the hospital in a different country and immediately began to heal patients with chronic and terminal illnesses. Cancer, ALS, Alzheimers, and so on. Unfortunately that gained the wrong kind of attention. The government had kidnapped me and taken me straight to a remote facility. They um.. tested the limits of my self healing. They’d break bones, cut off limbs, electrocute, and do a bunch of other things.”
You were unable to meet anyones eye-line, your body remembering each and every single thing they’d done. It was another side effect of the power you gained. While most people tended to forget the physical pain their body experienced over time, your body learned and remembered every single feeling it went through. Every cut, tear, burn. You could feel it all the moment you tried to remember it. Your body won’t ever lot you forget. Wanda had heard your thoughts and had to use everything in her power not to start bawling the moment those images came to your mind. Her grip on Natasha’s lower back tightened, she relayed what she’d heard to Natasha in her mind and felt Natasha’s body stiffen as she registered what happened.
You looked up as Natasha’s grip on your hand tightened, only to see the two women barely holding it together. Realising what transpired, you let out a weak smile and continued.
“Once they realised there was no limit to my regenerative capabilities, they attempted to train me for combat. They’d get fighters to take turns beating me into submission for hours on end until I learned to defend myself. I um.. I’m not good at combat.. So they tried to train me for um.. you know what, never mind. Basically they taught me to train past my body’s limits by constantly healing myself. They did it for years on end until it was ingrained into me. So yeah.. That’s why you saw what you saw..” You concluded.
“I’m so sorry, detka” Wanda whispered in your head.
“It’s alright, it’s in the past” you replied
“I can help train you in combat.” Steve said. “You could become a vital part of the attack te-“
Natasha scoffed, bringing his attention to her. He leaned back startled as he saw Natasha glaring at him and Wanda’s furious eyes glowing red. Both of them had the urge to throw him through the nearest window. You merely stared at him in shock. Tears made their way down your face. You withdrew your hand from Natasha’s and stood up.
“I’m sorry I need to go” you muttered, and hurried out of the room.
“Y/n” Wanda called out but it was too late, you were out of earshot. Natasha continued to glare at Steve.
“You ever suggest that again that again and I’ll test just how strong your healing factor is.” Natasha spat, standing up abruptly.
“I just meant-“ Steve tried to defend.
“We don’t care.” Wanda stated firmly. “She just told you what she went through and you thought of weaponising her just like those assholes.”
“Langua-“
“Don’t” Natasha warned.
She walked away before Steve could plead his case. Wanda glared at him one last time before following her out.
“FRIDAY” Natasha called out. “Where is y/n right now?”
“I believe Miss Y/n is one the roof.” FRIDAY stated
Holding hands, Natasha and Wanda made their way to the roof. Natasha reflected back to how she felt when she saw y/n work out and their interaction in the kitchen. She felt a little scared. The red room had trained her to always be in control, regardless of whether it was in bed or any interaction with others. Sure, she pretended to be submissive in front of her targets, but she was just toying with them. Even with Wanda, she was in control. But y/n.. that girl was something else.. For the first time in Natasha’s life, she wanted to give up control. She felt so safe and comfortable giving up control in y/n’s presence. It scared her but also excited her.
Since the sun had already started to set, the cold had set in. Being Russian and Sokovian, the cold didn’t bother them that much. The were, however, concerned about y/n. She wasn’t from a cold country. Natasha was glad to see that Wanda had brought a blanket without any prompt. When you didn’t acknowledge their presence, they slowly sat down on either side of you. Wanda draped the blanket over the three of you. While she didn’t say it out loud, she secretly enjoyed the feeling of the three of you cuddled together. She knew Natasha definitely felt the same, she just hoped you did too. The girls simultaneously rested their head on your shoulder, both surprised to feel muscle instead of bone. The rigorous workout must be effective.
“I have a request” Natasha started.
You hummed in question.
“From now on, could you please train with either me or Wanda? We won’t train combat, We’ll do whatever you’re comfortable with. Just, please don’t push us away.” She said.
Your head turned to her, only to notice the lack of space between your faces. Your eyes flitted down to her gorgeous lips and back. Natasha’s heart stuttered at the action, waiting for your next move. You looked away into the distance and nodded.
“There’s something you should know.” You confessed. “I didn’t tell you the whole truth downstairs.”
When you were met with silence, you continued.
“After they realised no matter what torture they used, I would refuse to fight and hurt others. They tried to train me to do suicide missions.. I.. they would strap bombs to my chest and blow me up as I walked to targeted spots as training.”
Both of the girls held your hands as tears made their way down your face.
“It hurt so much” you croaked. “The feeling of my body being torn apart and nerves slowly growing.”
Unable to take anymore, you let out a sob. Immediately Wanda enveloped you in a hug, Natasha doing the same until you were sandwiched between them.
“No one is going to test on us” Wanda whispered. “Not anymore.”
You continued to sob into her shoulder as they whispered words of comfort in your ear. Eventually, you found yourself laying down between the two women. The warmth their bodies provided and the exhaustion of your mind caused you to fall into a deep sleep. For some reason it was the best sleep you’d ever had.
The dynamic between the three of you had completely changed after that night. They were definitely your best friends. No matter how much you wished they could be more, but they were together. They didn’t need you in their relationship, you’d just hold them back. You didn’t let that bother you, no matter how guilty you felt at times during movie night when the two insisted you sit besides them. A week later Steve came up to you as you were eating breakfast.
“I’m really sorry y/n. It was incredibly insensitive of me to suggest what I did that night” he said. Natasha was reading on the sofa, but you could see her eyes on Steve, intently listening to what he was saying.
“It was never my intention to hurt you or make you feel uncomfortable. You absolutely do not have to train combat if you don’t want to. We all value you as a team member just the same.”
You slowly nodded your thanks. While you appreciated his apology, you were more nervous about your first workout session with Wanda and Natasha. They said they both wanted to be there for your first time as a group workout.
You entered the gym and noticed that the two women had already started working out, Wanda doing squats while Natasha was stretching. Your jaw dropped as you witnessed the two working out in their sports bra and tights. Natasha’s toned abs on display as she did the cobra pose. Your eyes shifted to Wanda and your knees felt weak. You saw sweat make its way down her neck and get lost into her cleavage. Feeling like a pervert for staring you cleared your throat and mentally cursed yourself. Both of them paused what they were doing and started walking towards you. Wanda grinned in excitement while Natasha smiled welcomingly.
“Alright y/n. Why don’t you tell us what your workout looks like and we’ll figure out a safer way to get the same results? Maybe Wanda and I can help spot you too.” Natasha asked.
“Oh cool. Okay, so basically, I run for a little bit. Then I do some strength training, followed by some bag work” you replied, already starting to stretch.
“Perfect, we can join you in running, I was planning on doing legs today, maybe we can workout together?” Wanda suggested. You nodded in agreement and the three of you walked to the treadmills.
“What speed are we running at?” Natasha asked off handedly.
Without thinking “We’ll start with 20 kmph and go from there?” You said, increasing the speed and began running.
Wanda froze. Refusing to back down, she started the treadmill and began running at full speed. 5 minutes later Wanda was panting, slowing the treadmill down and looking at the other two in amazement. She noticed Natasha wasn’t doing to great either. Around 10 minutes later Natasha slowed down, unable to maintain the pace. Natasha’s face burned as she realised you had unintentionally outlasted both her and Wanda. She spared a glance at Wanda and that little shit had the audacity to smirk. Natasha looked to her right to see you and to her amazement, you were in a full out sprint. Natasha’s jaw dropped to see that you had been running at 35kmph all this while. An hour later, neither of them had the energy to continue running and got off the treadmill. Both of them stunned at the fact that you hadn’t changed your pace for a single second in the past hour. Wanda cleared her throat, brining you out of your focus. You slowed down and stopped, hopping off the treadmill and walking towards them. While you were breathing heavily, you looked nowhere near as exhausted as the other two felt. You smiled at them brightly.
“Time for some strength training?” You asked genuinely.
Wanda glared at you as she sat on a bench, gulping some water. You noticed their exhausted state and knelt towards Wanda.
“Can I help” you asked gently.
Tilting her head in confusion, she nodded. You slowly grabbed both hands and closed your eyed. Wanda gasped as she felt a warmth envelope her. Her soreness exhaustion dissipate and energy enter her entire body. When you let go, Wanda stood up and twisted a couple of times. She felt better than ever before. Not a hint of exhaustion throughout her body. Natasha watched in amazement at the change in her girlfriend, even her slight dark circles had disappeared.
“Is this how you feel all the time?” Wanda asked in awe.
You chuckled. “Not exactly” you replied.
Before Wanda could inquire further, you turned to Natasha and asked for permission. She nodded, blushing slightly when you took her hand. Natasha, too, gasped when she felt warmth take over. Her muscles relaxing. Even the ache she’d been feeling in her knee vanished. She almost whined when you stepped back, the warm feeling throughout her body slowly dissipating. You hadn’t realised what happened but Wanda did. Natasha saw Wanda give her a smug smile.
You were about to walk to the free weight section when Natasha asked if the group could use the squat rack instead. Shrugging, you made your way to them. Unfortunately, your oversized sweatshirt kept on getting stuck to the squat rack. Sighing, you removed your sweatshirt. Leaving you in a full sleeved compression t-shirt and loose sweatpants. Wanda and Natasha completely froze as they saw you.
“Holy shit” Natasha thought.
“I agree” Wanda replied in her mind.
Your bulging muscles were on display, your muscular arms stretching the compression t-shirt. Natasha totally wasn’t staring at your abs and Wanda was definitely not staring at your arms. You paused, smirking when you noticed why the two were silent. You walked towards Natasha, lifted your finger to close her jaw. Her face flushed at the action.
“You’ll let flies in if you keep doing that” You teased with a smirk.
Wanda shamelessly stared at your sculpted back, looking away only when you started walking back to the squat rack.
“Don’t think I haven’t noticed you drooling, Wands” you stated, starting to workout.
It was Wanda’s turn to blush and Natasha to smirk. The rest of the workout went surprisingly well, neither of them commented on how heavy you were lifting for all of the exercises. At first, Natasha thought you were showing off for them but quickly quelled the thought as that was definitely not the kind of person you were. It was one of the things she lo- liked about you.
Post workout everyone went to their respective rooms and got ready for dinner. The training session ended up taking 4 hours.
As usual, you were a little late. Everyone was already sitting down, ready to eat. Wanda insisted to wait for you, to which they reluctantly agreed. You entered the room and your heart warmed as you saw Natasha and Wanda had saved a seat for you between the two of them. As you were about to sit down, your eyes fell on the robot sitting at the table. You froze when you saw what was on his forehead. A gasp left your lips, bringing everyone’s eyes to you. Wanda stood quickly, walking to you. Alarm bells ringing in her head as she felt shock, anger, and most of all grief rolling off you in waves. Thor, not picking up on your mood merely introduced you.
“The Vision, this is lady y/n. She’s the newest addition to our team. Lady Y/n, this is the vision. A synthezoid creat-“
“Thor shut up for a second” Nat interrupted. “Detka, what’s wrong?” She asked you.
You raised a trembling finger towards Vision.
“Why do you have that fucking stone” You gritted out.
“I am unaware of what you mean” Vision said, confused.
“That stone.” You seethed. “Killed my sister.”

Salt of the Earth ~ Part 1
Pairing: Michael Berzatto x OFC
Summary: She was Carmy's best friend growing up, and Michael never looked at her as anything other than that until years later when she comes back to Chicago to start over. In the process, she turns his sorry excuse of a life upside down.
Content/Warnings: Friends to lovers, Fluff, Angst, Family Drama, Dysfunctional relationships, Implied/referenced drug addiction, Alcohol mention, Divorce, Pets, Pet names, Dialogue heavy. Undisclosed age gap (in my mind Michael is late 30s and OC is late 20s, but it's really up to your interpretation).
Word Count: 6.8k // 4 chapters // AO3 link.
A/N: This is set in the year of the Fishes episode on season 2. It starts in summer and slowly builds up to that Christmas.
— This was an anon request that I got a few months ago, I hope you're still around. I tried to fit all the ideas you sent as best I could. There's a bit of info dump on the first chapter, but I hope it isn't too off-putting.
Chapter 1: Best thing since sliced bread
Seconds stretch into minutes, minutes elongate into long hours on slow days like this at The Beef. Especially in summer when the air conditioner stops working for the second time in the middle of August. Any living soul that crosses that door must have a dying wish or be the devil themselves to adventure themselves to what has become Michael's personal hell.
It's been a testing year, and there's so much he can do to fix this place right now. While he waits for Fak to come check the damn AC unit, Michael tends the front while Ebra takes his lunch break.
Turning the paper's pages on the counter, he comes across an article about the extensive fires eating different parts of the country. A wretched thought crosses his mind as he reads – maybe it'd be better to burn this place to the ground and start over. He entertains the idea for a second until the door swings open, inviting more heat into the boiling pot.
He lifts his eyes from the words to find a familiar face approaching the counter. It's not Fak, but a much better vision of someone he used to know.
“Mayhem Maya.”
“Magic Mikey.”
That former thought of burning down this place disappears somewhere in the midst of that beautiful aura that saunters with her big brown eyes, long raven hair, nervous smile, and firm steps.
“It's been a while, Maybird.” Almost ten years since she set foot in this establishment. “What brings you to this hole in the wall?”
“Came to collect that meatball sub you promised at uncle Teddy's funeral, remember?”
“Oh, right.”
Ever since she moved to a different state, he only had seen her a handful of times when she came back for the holidays. Last time he saw her was at the beginning of spring, when her uncle, Ted Silva, passed away.
“I also had an interview at the new vet clinic on the next block.” She places her cross-body bag on an empty stool while she perches her ass on the one next to it.
“How's that going? Did you get tired of California already?”
“No, I love California. But I needed a change of scenery. It's been rough after… you know…” the divorce. She wasn't married for long, but she still can't bring herself to say the word.
“I’ve heard some of it.” He’s pretty much aware of how everything went down. Well, he’s got grapevine’s juicy version of the story, but he never heard her side directly.
Though Michael and Maya know each other as if they were related, they were never close confidants. She always thought he was the coolest guy in Chicago. And he always thought fondly of her, given their families association, and Maya’s close friendship with his brother.
Michael places an order for her sandwich and grabs a soda for her, while she explains she has two more job interviews later.
“Does your mother know you're back?” He folds the paper and props his elbows on the counter.
“She probably does.”
“Still not talking, huh?”
“It's not my fault she made me the black sheep of the family. She’s like vitriol on steroids.”
“Yeah? What happened at the wake? You left before I could say goodbye.”
Michael recalls the tension at the funeral, particularly at the wake when Angela Silva grabbed Maya by the elbow and took her youngest daughter outside the house as if she was still a child that needed to be scolded.
“Nothing. I barely said a word that day. Guess everything I do feels like a personal attack to her. I can admit that I'm not perfect, and that sometimes I've acted up just to get a reaction out of her, but that day she just went off again…” She pauses without finishing that thought to take a refreshing sip of her coke. “And that wasn't nearly as bad as the day I told her I was getting…”
“Divorced? Why can't you say the word? It's not Voldemort.”
“What the hell do you know about Voldemort?”
“How do I… Who took you and Carmy to buy those damn books? Have you forgotten?” Maya shakes her head. “You even tried many times invoking his name, so I was haunted by eaters or something like that. You two were real potterheads.”
“And you were just a pothead,” she laughs, stirring the ice cubes in her drink with a straw. “I totally blocked that out. We were just a couple of nerds.”
“I’d say!”
“Meatball sub!” Richie calls from the pass-through window and takes a second look when catching Maya in the joint. “Maya Papaya?!”
“Please, don’t call me that.” She scoffs while Richie promptly abandons the kitchen and goes around the counter to give her a welcoming hug.
“Did you know she was coming?” He asks Michael, as he props his ass on the bar.
“Had no idea. She just showed up.”
“Did you tell her about Carmy?”
“What about him?”
“He’s in Copenhagen.”
“Oh, I knew about that.”
“You two talk often?”
“Sometimes, I guess.” Barely more likely. They don't even text anymore. She's tried but there's been nothing but crickets at his end for months.
While Richie grills her about Carmy and what she’s been up to, Michael can’t help but look around the shop to notice, from every corner and wall, memories bouncing all at once in his direction. It takes him back in time to those days when she and Carmy were as thick as thieves.
Their shared history goes back to that same street their families have lived on for over thirty years… It’s still clear in his mind, like it was yesterday, when he was forced to babysit them when they wanted to go to the movies or trick-or-treating or the bookstore. That was a little annoying back then, now he fondly remembers all those times in summer, when they’d go to the convenience store to get ice pops on their bikes. Then they’d ride back and sit in the middle of the swanky rug in their living room and watch TV for hours. More than once they were yelled at by Mama Berzatto when she would come home to find melted colorful stains in the fabric. She would lose her shit. Carmy was used to it. Maya wasn’t, but the girl never flinched once cause Donna and her own mother were cut from the same unstable piece of cloth.
Maya and Carmy were really close up until they went separate ways for college. Their bond was something to admire. They had something so special that inevitably, Carmy fell in love with her. She was his best friend and confident. They kept each other's secrets, and Carmy thought she'd feel the same in return. It wasn't a crazy notion. They spent so much time together, everyone thought it'd lead to something more, but that never happened.
Mikey and Richie used to tease the youngest cub relentlessly. They tried multiple times to encourage him to ask her out, but he never found the guts to do it. Especially if it could potentially end their friendship. Carmy didn't want to lose that. Though he never confessed his feelings, Maya always knew. Even in her teens, call it a woman’s intuition, part of her already knew. Maya wished she'd felt the same toward him, but the heart wants what it wants, and she couldn't change that.
What was really fucked up was that she had the most ridiculous crush on the older Berzatto when she was a teen. While she knew he'd never look at her as anything other than Carmy's annoying little friend, that didn't stop her from daydreaming about it for years. It was a secret that no one ever knew and that was placed in a drawer at the back of her mind after she left Chicago.
After graduating, Maya and Carmy stayed in touch for a long time, until their calls and texts became less frequent. They followed different dreams that required a lot of attention and sadly their friendship got hurt in the process.
While she attended Vet School on the west coast, he became a chef on the east.
Maya thrived at school and work. She really went out on her own, and became the woman she always wanted to be. Unsheltered, confident, outspoken. She outgrew her shell and opened herself to new experiences and people. She loved it all. It wasn’t smooth sailing, but for the most part she was pretty happy with her choices.
And now she's back in Chicago, set on a new path and awaiting to see where it takes her.
She’s living in a house in Oak Park with her dog, Coco; Richie fishes out of her. Apparently, she got some money from uncle Teddy, and she’s invested it in a home for her and her beloved staffy.
“Does Carmy know you’re here?” Richie circles back.
“No, I haven't talked to him in months.”
“Why? Did you two have a fall-out or something?”
“There's no why. We're just busy.”
“Mike, help me out here. Weren’t these two fools supposed to get married?”
“Yeah, everyone thought you'd ended up together.”
“Man, I don't know what to tell you, we just didn't,” her head sinks between her shoulders.
“Just get over yourself and hit him up. The kid has been hung up on you since forever. It looks like things didn’t go so well with your marriage and all. You should take that as a sign, you’d never find anyone better than Carmy. The boy could really use some excitement in his life. And so could you.”
“C’mon, leave her alone. Go back to work, Cousin.”
Michael throws her a lifeline, noticing how miserable she looks every time Richie opens his unfiltered mouth.
“He’s not wrong, you know? You and Carmy… it looked like you two had something special.” Michael offers once Richie is back in the kitchen.
“It’s called friendship. You should look it up.” She points out.
“I have Richie.”
“Exactly. You have Richie. Why don't you two marry the other and leave me alone? If you think about it, you were as close to Richie as I was with Carmy. Even more. Should everyone assume you are in love with him? Cause that's what you're implying.”
“Touché. I'll drop it.”
“Look, as hard as it is to believe, there was nothing else between us. I was aware he felt something for me, but I didn’t feel the same.”
“You should give him a chance sometime. He might surprise you.”
It’s not the first time these two have been trying to play matchmaker between Maya and Carmy, and it’s bizarre to see they still do at any given opportunity.
“Okay, if I give Carmy a chance, you have to give Richie a chance. Those are the rules, Berzatto.”
“Oh, I've tried. He's not into me,” he remarks, amused, and leans closer to confess something in a lower voice. “Do you wanna know a secret?”
“Uh, sure.”
“He and Tiffany are having a baby. He just told me a few days ago.”
“What? You let him reproduce? I'll pray for Tiff.”
Chapter 2: Cool as a cucumber
Everything falls slowly into place as Maya settles back in Chicago. She secures the job at the clinic near The Beef, which is a huge relief after her rushed decision of moving back to her hometown without securing a job first. It was part of the plan all along to practice what she loves but never thought this would be the year. As much as she loved California, once her divorce was finalized she felt like something was trapping her there. And the money she got from her uncle gave her some leeway to improvise, get away from all that, and start over.
Maya is spending her morning going through the stack of unpacked boxes, finding a good place for everything, making it feel more homey. It's not a big house, but spacious enough for the two of them. The big selling point was the backyard for Coco to zoom around and cool down in her wading pool, which she loves. It didn't take long for the five-year-old pup to get used to her new neighborhood. They've even made a couple of friends at the park nearby.
A moment before the doorbell rings, Coco whines from her spot by the window, where she often sits to watch passers in the street.
“Who is it?” Maya playfully asks her dog as she makes her way to the front door.
Through the peephole, she sees Michael's profile as he inspects the porch.
“Hi,” her eyes widen as she opens the door. “Didn't know you were coming.”
“Yeah, I would've called, but I didn't get your number the other day.” But he got her address from Richie's intense questioning when she visited the shop.
“I knocked on two different houses until I got the right one,” he explains as Coco curiously circles around his feet, sniffing his pants, hitting his crotch with her nose in the process.
“No, Coco. Sit. How many times have we talked about no nut-tapping?” Maya glances at her with amusement as the dog sits on her haunches.
“It’s fine,” he snorts. “All dogs do that.”
“Yeah, tell me about it. But she’s not any other dog. I thought I had taught her better. So what brings you here?”
“This.” He offers the paper bag hanging in his hand. “It's just a little house-warming gift.”
“You didn't have to.” As she takes the bag from his hand she ushers him inside before closing the door.
“It's nothing, really.”
He glances around as Maya takes out the box from the bag.
“Wow, a set of knives? That's not nothing.”
“Everyone needs one good set of knives. But you can exchange them for something else if you want.”
“No. I like these. But I gotta warn you that I'm not much of a cook, and I'll probably use the same one for everything.”
“That's fine I can show you sometime though. Is she friendly? ” He points at the dog that keeps staring at him. “Can I pet her?”
“Yeah, she loves everyone. Go ahead.”
Michael cautiously pets the brown coat of her head as her floppy ears lower at the passing of his hand.
“Never pictured you with a pit bull.”
“Me neither. I always thought I'd be a cat lady. But I met her at this adoption drive when she was one, and she stole my heart.”
“I can see why.” Michael crouches down, and pets Coco with both hands. “She's really sweet.”
He lets her lick his chin a couple of times before standing back on his feet. Then they go on a tour around the house.
“It's still a work in progress. I'm thinking of painting a few walls, but we like it so far.”
“Yeah, it has good bones.”
“So you don't have to work today?” Asks Maya.
“No, we've had some trouble with the gas line, and we've been shut down for a couple of days.”
“That sucks. Now where am I going to get my sandwiches and coffee on my way to work?”
“Heard Starbucks is pretty good.”
“Shut up. Don't even joke about that.” She playfully shoves his shoulder as they go back to the living room.
“Are you doing something later?”
She shakes her head. “Why?”
“I don't know, thought you were having a comeback party or something.”
“I don't really have any friends here. And I don't feel like inviting my family yet. As you can see, I still have a lot to unpack.”
“Physically or mentally speaking?”
“Both,” she scoffs.
“Let's do something then? Just you and me. We could grab some pizza, or go out for a drink for old times’ sake?”
“Old times’ sake?” It's amusing, surprising and confusing his sudden interest in her. Maybe he can see how pathetic she thinks she is, and he's taking pity on her. Although, that was never Michael style.
“Yeah, c'mon, Mayhem. You look like you could use some fun.” He picks up a book that's sitting on top from the box opened by the couch that's titled — Dating Again with Courage and Confidence: The Five-Step Plan to Revitalize Your Love Life after Heartbreak, Breakup, or Divorce. “And maybe a rebound or something. You don't need a fucking help book. You only need me to show where to get the best guys, or girls. Whatever you're into.”
“Give me that. I don't need a rebound, a help book, or you for all matter finding me a date.”
“No? Then why do you have that?”
“My friend Paige thought I should give it a try.”
“Maybe she was onto something there.”
“I'm perfectly fine. Just want to finish organizing everything, focus on work and this handful I have right here.” Her hand gestures at Coco. “What are you so interested in my love life anyway? First you try to play matchmaker with Carmy, and now you want me to do what, exactly? Hook up with the first guy I see?”
“No, I'm just asking you to go out and have some fun. I know Carmy was the only friend you had here. And if I was in your shoes, I'd feel pretty lonely.”
“I'm not lonely, Michael. Do I miss my friends in Sacramento? Sure,” she admits. “But I don't wanna force anything. I'm just taking it slow. When the time comes I'll jump right in but for now, this is all I need. Really. Stop pitying me.”
“I'm not pitying you, sweetheart.”
“No? Then what is it? Where is this coming from?”
“I don't know… I've always thought you were the salt of the earth. And though we never really hung out together, I thought you could use… But I can see now that you're different, and that you know what you need right now, so I'll just shut up and back off. Let you do your thing.”
“Thank you. I do know what I'm doing, by the way. You don't have to worry about me. I'll be fine. But I appreciate you coming here anyway.”
“Yeah, of course. And I can help you unpack if you need.”
“Hm, if you don't have anything better to do, be my guest. We could grab a pizza later, if the offer still stands. Or just order some food.”
“Sure.”
Michael helps Maya unpack all the boxes and put everything in place in half the time it'd have taken her alone. They order some food for lunch and spend half the day talking and laughing until late in the afternoon when they decide to go out for some drinks to keep the good vibes going.
At the end of the night, she offers to drive Michael back to his apartment as a thank you for inviting her.
“Did you have fun?” Michael asks from the passenger seat as she pulls up in front of his building.
“Yeah, I did. I'm glad I changed my mind.”
“Me too. I didn't know you were this fun. You're nothing like I remember.”
“Yeah, I was kind of weird growing up. You guys probably thought there was something wrong with me. ”
“Nah, don't be so hard on yourself. We were all weird in our own way.”
“Uh-uh. No Michael Berzatto. You were the coolest guy back in the day, and you still are.”
“I don’t know about that,” he scoffs. “For the record… I never thought there was anything wrong with you.”
“You were probably the only one… Anyway, thank you for today. I know I said I didn't need this, but I guess I did.”
“You're welcome, Maybird. I'm glad you’re back.”
“Yeah, me too.”
“Thanks for bringing me home,” he softly squeezes her arm before reaching for the handle to open the door.
“No problem.”
“You know you can call me if you ever miss your friends, y’know?” he throws casually.
“I uh…sure. I will.”
“Okay.”
“Okay,” she echoes back as he pulls the handle and the door opens.
“Have a good night, Michael,” she says as he gets one foot on the pavement.
“You, too, sweetheart.”
He closes the door and vaguely waves as she sets the car in motion and watches her drive away.
Chapter 3: Don't cry over spilled milk
In the few weeks he's been spending time with Maya, Michael has found himself enjoying her company more than he'd like to admit. Being with her grounds him. She makes him forget for a little while all that's wrong in his life. She's like a beacon in that immerse darkness that his sorry existence has become. Despite having her own set of problems, he's watched her rise above all that with poise. He wonders what it's her secret to her steadfast determination, even when her own family has disavowed her.
After closing shop, he dives into his stash to tame that brewing headache before driving to Oak Park to pay her a visit. She told him earlier via text that she was at Home Depot buying some paint to update the color of her bedroom and asked him to come over to hang out after work.
For some reason, he couldn't say no. Not even the storm in his head is strong enough to deny her request. He has a pull on him, tugging him hard like a dog tied to a leash in her hand, he can’t help but follow her lead.
When he arrives at her house, she's halfway done. Two of the walls shine bright new in a lavender tone as she starts working on the next one.
After having beer and playing a tug of war game with his new friend, Coco, Michael offers his help to finish painting the walls. He uses a brush to paint the corners, while she gracefully uses a roller like a pro with her denim overalls over a tank top, and her raven hair pulled up in a ponytail sprinkled with lavender paint beads. When she lifts one of her arms, he catches a glimpse of a tattoo on the side of her rib cage, leveled to the roundness of her chest that looks like the outline of a dog paw.
“What are you looking at?” She asks after catching him staring.
“You have paint on your chin.”
“Oh.” She wipes it with the back of her hand, but she just spreads the stain along her jaw. “I made it worse, didn't I?”
“Yeah.”
She shrugs it off and continues with the task ahead until the whole wall is covered.
“Is everything okay, Bear?” Maya puts down the paint roller. “You're quieter than usual.”
“Yeah, everything's alright.” It sounds so honest, he almost believes it. “It's just been a long day.”
“I'm sorry that I put you to work.”
“Don't be. This is relaxing.”
“Yeah?” She takes a step back and surveys how much brighter her bedroom looks already after covering most of the former downcast grey. “Is the color right? Do you think it's too girlish?”
Giving the room a once over he says, “it's a good shade. I dig it. It doesn't matter what I think or if it's too girlish, as long as you like it. Do you like it?”
“Yeah. I do.”
She dips the roller on the tray to cover another section of the wall.
“You never told me what happened at the funeral with your mom,” Michael leans on the stepladder, taking a short break.
“Do you really wanna know?” She glances over her shoulder.
“Yeah. Everyone does. I’ve heard some crazy stories about it. Thought I should get it straight from the source.”
“I never pegged you for a gossip girl.”
“I’m not. I’m just making conversation.”
She mockingly narrows her eyes, drawing a lopsided smirk, “liar.”
“You don’t have to tell me if you don’t wanna. But yeah, can’t help being a little curious about it.”
“I don’t mind telling you, but it won’t be as entertaining as those crazy stories people have made up.”
“I’m not here for entertainment. I just wanna hear your side of the story, Maybird.”
Maya lets out a heavy sigh and while keeping her focus on the wall she shares with him what really happened. She’s right to say that is not the best story she’s ever told, though when it comes to her mother, all her stories tend to have a surreal element even she can’t fathom sometimes.
That day at the funeral, she was taken outside during the wake by Angela Silva to get scolded about her imminent divorce. It wasn’t finalized by then, and her mom invoked one last Hail Mary to convince her to stay with her husband, who was also currently dating someone else. It was a messy situation that Maya couldn't wait to get out of, and the fact that her mother never offered an ounce of support wasn’t surprising, but still devastating. Somehow, Angela found that the reason for her separation from her husband was that Maya didn’t want to have kids, and that really vexed Angela. All she wanted for her three kids was to follow the same traditional path Angela was forced into, no matter how miserable she was. Her two older sisters followed her mother’s narrowed traditional values. But Maya, ever-the-nonconformist, swore she would never follow anyone’s drum beat but her own. Her husband thought she’d change her mind eventually. He was wrong. She knew that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon, which led her here, to this moment.
“Is your mom ever happy?” Michael has always wondered.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen her happy, except when she’s drunk. That’s why she has to make everyone else miserable.”
“Yeah, but she’s always had a fixation on making you miserable.”
“Like I said, every family needs a black sheep, and I’m it.”
“Is that why you became a vet?”
“Yeah, probably.”
“So, it's true, you don’t wanna have kids? I’m not judging. I’m just curious.”
“I honestly don't know. I just knew that when he told me he wanted to have a baby right away, it didn’t feel right. I said that maybe in six or seven years I’d be okay with it. Told him I wanted to travel and just be us for a while, and he said that was too long to wait. I don’t know… he stopped talking to me, and it was clear that he wasn’t changing his mind, and I wasn’t changing my mind, so. At some point I got tired of trying… He got a girlfriend as soon as I filed for divorce and I got a text from Paige the other day that said he got her already pregnant, like… that was never me. I guess it served me right… I married him on a whim, an impulse without really talking about what we wanted…”
“Hey, don’t feel sorry for yourself. You dodged a bullet there.”
“You really think that?.”
“Yeah, I do. You stood up for yourself and knew when to step back when it didn’t feel right. Not everyone has the balls to do that. Think how miserable you’d be by now if you had tried to please him or your mom. You seem happy now. That's what matters.” He means that with all his heart, and wishes he had the same drive to follow those same steps. As much as he loved the restaurant, he chose to run it to please people within his family. And that love turned into a nightmare he couldn't escape.
“You know… I liked you better when you were quiet,” she quips.
Michael huffs a soft laugh, picking up his brush to resume painting.
When the room is finished, she plugs a couple of fans and closes the door to keep Coco away.
Maya washes her hands and face in the bathroom sink. When she comes out, she catches the motion of Michael's arm as he shoves what looks like a pill into his mouth before taking a gulp of water from one of her glasses.
“What was that? Are you okay?”
“Yeah, yeah. It's just a headache,” looking down, he runs a palm over his short growing beard.
“Is it the fumes?”
“No, I had it before coming here.”
“Michael,” she sighs softly at his name. “You should've told me. I wouldn't have let you help if I knew.”
“Would you stop that? I wanted to help.”
“Okay, c'mere. Let's sit down.”
“No, I think I should get going.”
“Nonsense. I'm not going to let you drive until you feel better.”
He yields with a long exhale, and follows Maya into the living room, where her bed is settled askew in the middle of the space.
She takes a seat on the edge of the mattress and waits for him to sit next to her.
“Give me your hand,” she shows her palm up, as his eyes narrow. “C'mon, don't be a baby, give me your hand, Berzatto.”
“When did you become so bossy?” He slowly lifts his hand and as he lays it on top of her palm, his fingers tremble upon contact with her skin. Maya then uses her opposite hand to clip the webbing between his thumb and pointer fingers with her own and begins massaging that spot.
“My friend Sierra is really into acupressure. She says this is a pressure point that helps with headaches.” She explains while slowly increasing the force. “Does it hurt?”
“Not one bit. Is that like acupuncture?” His voice comes as a whisper as he focuses on her diligent fingers.
“Kinda. I think. I’m not really sure.”
“You don't have to fix me, you know?”
“I'm not trying to fix you, Bear. I just wanna make you feel better.”
“Admit it. You just love a good wounded animal.”
She smiles softly, placing his hand down on his knee and picking up the other. “Does it feel any different?”
He’s not really sure, it wasn’t truly a headache that led them to take that pill but the annoying rambling of his thoughts. She shouldn’t have seen that. And he shouldn’t have lied. But having her hands on his like this is straight up lovely. Inside of him, it truly feels like something is broken, wounded, and missing, and this is giving him a sliver of relief as he waits for the pill to kick in. If he was a better man, he’d tell her the truth. But he’s too far gone for saving. All he can do is keep that facade up.
“Does it?” She insists after not getting an answer.
“A little.”
“Do you wanna lay down?”
Swallowing, he responds with a nod, and they both lean back on the mattress at the same time. Looking at the ceiling, she keeps kneading that pressure point, unsure if she’s even doing it right.
They stay in comfortable silence for a good five minutes and when she finally places his hand down, Maya glances to the side and sees that his eyes have closed, and his chest gently rising and falling. She calls his name softly, but she can see that behind the sharp edges of his face and the ever-growing shade of his beard, he’s truly exhausted, so she doesn’t insist. She extends her hand to turn off the lamp, and curls on the other side of the bed without disturbing his sleep.
“Good night,” she says softly and closes her eyes.
From a dusty corner of her mind comes crawling that little forgotten part that used to harbor a lot of feelings for Michael. Though a few weeks ago he seemed practically the same Michael she knew, over the past month she’s keenly noticed little changes here and there. His eyes sometimes cast a dark shade tainted in nothing but sadness, it’s barely noticeable for other people. It comes and goes, but it tells her he’s not truly as happy as he pretends to be.
Michael wakes up disoriented at the crack of dawn.
It takes him a few seconds to remember he’s still in Mayas’ bed in the middle of her living room and that the weight that has his arm pinned is her body pressed against his. She’s warmly snuggled on his side, with her arms tucked between his chest and hers, and a peaceful expression on her beautiful face. She’s so awfully close, he can smell the scent of her hair, and feel the heat of her breath every time she exhales.
It's such an odd moment for him to have her that close. He's unsure of whether it would be better to slip out of bed unnoticed before she wakes up, or just stay there and watch her sleep for a bit longer. Either option would make him look like a creep, he thinks. So he opts to gently wake her up. His free hand reaches to his forehead to move a stand of hair away. Her brow scrunches as his light-feather touch grazes her skin. His lips curve up as he traces the shell of her ear to see her stir awake. She blinks slowly a couple of times until her focus shifts onto him.
“Hey, Maybird.”
“Hey.” Her lips move, it's barely audible.
“Sorry, I fell asleep.” His fingers absentmindedly massage her earlobe.
She's so stunned by waking up to that level of intimacy, she simply nods, as her mouth softly draws a smile.
“It's fine. Does your head feel better?”
“Much better. That pressure thing really worked.”
“I'm glad.”
“Listen, I gotta go open. Maybe we could do something later?”
“Okay,” she swallows nervously, hoping that waking up with him like this isn't just a dream. “Can you do me a favor first?”
“Sure.”
“Can you stay five more minutes?”
“I uh… I think I can,” against his better judgment, he decides he can stay for a few minutes more holding her.
The way her lips pull up timidly at the corners, revealing the dimples framing her mouth, completely disarms him. He’s always felt a certain affinity towards her, but being this close to her awakes a longing within that feels dangerous. He can’t bring someone new into his life. Not while everything around him is falling apart. It’s already hard enough having to pretend around other people.
He couldn’t do that to her. He won’t.
Michael will have to fight harder because when her arm tucks around his waist he can’t help but press his lips against her forehead.
Chapter 4: Hard nut to crack
Four months later…
After that initial moment of weakness when he fell asleep on her bed, he fought hard to elude that odd longing that has only grown into a big mass of love toward Maya. To anyone else in the world, a feeling as big as that would be a blessing, especially when it's reciprocated. To Michael, it's a weakness he can't afford right now.
Spending all that time with Maya has been like discovering a whole new planet Michael never thought existed. She's all vast, uncharted territory that fazes him more than it should. Despite his best efforts, he’s fallen into her alluring orbit and can’t find the way out into his own universe.
Far gone is that moody teenager that would mumble a few words here and there. And now there's this tragically stunning woman that looks you directly in the eye, says anything that crosses her mind, and laughs without a care in the world.
Though falling in love with her wouldn’t be completely wrong, it's not quite right either. It fills him with guilt to think about her in that manner. Moreover, it feels like a betrayal to Carmy, who’s far away in a different continent, prospering in his craft.
Michael tries to fool himself into believing that this is just temporary infatuation. He’s even attempted several times to convince her to get in touch with Carmy but hasn’t succeeded. It’d be easier for him if she were to put her focus on someone else instead of him. He has nothing to offer to her and has deemed himself unworthy of her, or anyone for that matter. If she only knew what’s really going on with him, she wouldn’t want Michael nearly as she believes she does.
Layer by layer, she’s tearing all his walls and defenses down. And after all the back and forth, he's absolutely sure she wants more than he can offer her. She’s been giving him the right signals. She doesn't shy away from it. Maya is direct and impulsive, and everything about her is fascinating and intimidating.
It’s time to either cut her loose, or accept that he’s madly in love with her and do something about it.
Amidst coming to terms with a final decision, he's lured into a surprise party she's organized for his birthday.
Michael is left speechless by her determination. And a little annoyed too for reasons he can't explain. To be honest, he’s never been a fan of surprise parties, but the main problem is that this would make things much harder for him to let her down easily. She’s carved herself into his life and the longer he drags this out, the worse this is going to hurt.
He’s aware that it’s selfish and obtuse of him for being that ungrateful that someone who cares that profoundly about him, that they would go all out to prove that. He feels like an asshole, but the train has already left the station.
Using the same tiring self-defense mechanism, he draws his best smile and brings out the Michael everyone seems to love. Not without help. There's always that crutch tucked in his wallet in the form of a pill. Being high numbs him enough to deal with the situation.
The cherry on top comes at the end of the night, when he walks her up to her car and asks if he's had a good time. He lies through his teeth and for the first time, he can tell Maya is not buying it. Perhaps she never did, but he's well-versed on her tells by now, and he can clearly see she's fed up with all the bullshit that comes out of his mouth.
“Look, it's not that I didn't like the party. It's just that I hate surprises, and I was exhausted today. But it was a nice thought, sweetheart. I just… I wasn't in the right mood.” It's seemingly convincing the second time around, but her face shows nothing but regret. “I love the jacket you bought me, though.”
Michael has never been interested in fashion, but he's always loved vintage jackets, and the one she picked it's a perfect addition to his collection. It's a bomber jacket, aviator style, in brown leather with a couple of patches and fur collar.
As they reach Maya's car, they come to a stop. She turns to him, “I know I can be a little too much sometimes. But I promise no more surprises from now on.”
“You and I both know, you won’t be able to keep that promise even if your life depended on it. That's part of what makes you– you, sweetheart. Don’t let my bad mood ruin that.”
“I’ll try.”
After a beat, without hesitation she leans in to leave a goodnight kiss on his bearded cheek and on a whim, she decides to press a second one on his lips.
It takes him completely aback. He wants to dive so badly into her mouth, but he freezes on the spot. And when Maya attempts to deepen the kiss, he finally reacts by placing a placating hand on her shoulder as he pulls his head back.
“I'm… I'm sorry we can't do this, Maya.”
“Wait, I thought… Did I misread something?”
“No, you didn’t misread anything. I just can’t do this.”
“Why?”
“I can't.”
“You can't or don’t want to?”
“Guess I don’t want to.”
“Can you at least tell me why? Did I do something wrong?”
“You did nothing wrong, sweetheart.” He wants to spill out the old – it's not you, it's me – excuse, but he refrains. Every thought and action go against every good instinct he's ever had. He hates himself for making her feel insecure. And yet, he can't backtrack now.
“Stop calling me sweetheart. You see how misleading that is?”
“Sorry. I think I gave you the wrong impression.”
Her eyes narrow, and he can see the gears turning for a long moment before opening her mouth.
“I don't think you gave me the wrong impression, Michael. I think you're too chickenshit to admit that there's something between us and, for whatever reason, you're just taking the coward's way out. You've been weird the whole night, especially with me. I just threw a party just for you, the least you can do is tell me why.”
“I didn't ask you to do that. And I don't owe telling you shit! I was trying to let you go easy, but nothing is ever easy with you. So I'll just say it. This, you and me, is never going to happen.”
It sounds ridiculous as it comes out of his mouth, but he stands firm on that statement as her heart breaks in front of him.
In the end, it'd be better for her, he believes.

how they react when they catch you simping for a fictional character
pairings. shidou ryusei x gn!reader, itoshi rin x m!reader, mikage reo x gn!reader (separate)
contents. crack, smau, a sexual joke and a half (it's just ryusei being ryusei) shinonome akito slander (I'M SORRY I PROMISE I LOVE HIM BUT RIN DOESN'T), exposing my taste in men, written all in lowercase, spoilers for sounds of a summer event (project sekai)
a/n. i thought of this bc i questioned if i liked rin or akito more 😭, and sorry for rin's being so long since i had the most ideas for him :>. i also have no confidence with crack so please bear with me and it's my first smau
shidou ryusei - seong taehoon (how to fight / viral hit)
when he caught you gawking at the new viral hit chapter, taehoon specifically, he immediately joined you (as he should)
he straight up yelled "smash" at that one scene where taehoon's snacking and he's wearing a tight shirt so you can see all of his muscles
he begs you to re read the series with them, and now you two read each update every week together, fully engaged in the story and taehoon's abs
attempts to recreate all of taehoon's kicks (i headcanon that does taekwondo and has a black belt :>), proudly shows them off to you, with a huge grin on his face (please fawn over him too)
also extensively practices so he can show them off by incorporating them into soccer somehow (doesn't matter if it ain't practical he just wants to impress you), and if he ever has to use them on anyone making you uncomfortable
he probably has a folder in his gallery dedicated to every panel he loves (which is basically all) and recreates his absolute favs (with you as his photographer)
makes a lot of jokes about being in love with taehoon (so do you), but he'd stop them if they made you uncomfortable, and reassures you that a drawing can't compare to how sweet, amazing and perfect you are
honorable mentions to baek seongjun being his second favourite
wants you to do taekwondo as well cause now he has a thing for it after discovering taehoon
"i swear to god men who do taekwondo and can actually fight are so hot,"
"isn't that you?"
"... you don't agree with me...?"
"no you have a brilliant point"
itoshi rin - shinonome akito (project sekai)
during the sounds of a summer festival event you spent so much time glued to your phone, full combo-ing literally every hard, expert, and master song you possibly could, leveling up all character ranks, sacrifice countless of hours of sleep (if it's for akito it's very much worth it), and even contemplate spending money
you even tweeted about how badly you need him
rin notices the bags under your eyes, and the lack of sleep you had been getting, he's worried and when he asks you you're too focused on the event story to even register what he says, as you're on the brink of sobbing at young akito and ena
he observes as well, and immediately is jealous of how much of your attention this fictional character was receiving from you
as you're about to spend another few hours grinding, he stops you
"dumbass you need to sleep, and give your eyes a break"
"no i don't, i need summer festival akito,"
"who and what?"
soon you're rambling on how much akito's backstory and struggles already hurt, and how wholesome yet painful the event story was, with akito quitting soccer and ena encouraging him to give music a try, and it only nurtures rin's envy
"you're going to cry for a ginger guy who quit soccer and started his ambition because of his older sister? how lukewarm,"
"yes i am?? and he looked cute as a child and now he's a pretty boy with the best vocals. their event cards are beautiful too i need them. didn't you start soccer because of sae anyways?"
"tch"
"rin... are you jealous?"
"... no, i just don't get what you see in this idiot. i never quit soccer when it got hard and i know how to persevere, i don't give up, i don't experience despair when someone's better than me-"
"so you're jealous,"
"no"
"rin you always have and always will be my number 1. akito can't do anything you've done for me, and can't even compare to how pretty you are,"
"damn right,"
despite being salty, he still installs the game to read the stories, out of pure curiosity and wants to understand what kind of stuff you like
he ends up adoring ena and akito's relationship (the supportive part only ofc), as well as tsukasa and saki's (and secretly wishes sae was as affectionate as shizuku since she reminds him of sae in the past)
you do not shut up when you seem him struggle with hitorinbo envy on master
"I THOUGHT YOU SAID AKITO WAS LUKEWARM,"
"he is, i was just curious why you liked the stories so much,"
"YOU SPENT EVERY FREE CRYSTAL ON THE FIND A WAY OUT EVENT AND NOW GRINDING FOR MORE,"
"... i want his boyfriend"
"YOU READ THE MAIN STORY TOO ?! and you don't need touya you have me"
"THAT'S HOW I FELT ABOUT AKITO,"
"YOU FEEL INFERIOR TO A LUKEWARM GINGER?"
mikage reo - kang tae moo (business proposal)
he heard you squealing at a scene of tae moo getting flustered after sunghoon suggested his feelings for hari
he thought that you were having a heart attack and thought something was wrong
reo doesn't even need the show's context to be invested immediately, as he joins you and watches with great interest
after seeing you simp over tae moo, in secret, he binge watches the rest of the series in attempt to mimic any romantic scenes
full on posts the "do you know what my credit card and my love for y/n have in common? they simply have no limit" on his not very private twitter account, and it leaves you flustered by all the comments saying how lucky you are and their jealousy
deletes any comment revealing the source of that line (silently apologises to the writer(s) and credits ahn hyo seop for its brilliant execution)
little does he know nagi made a tweet exposing him
also recreates other cute scenes from the show, and starts looking for more kdramas to watch and recreate (still gets fully absorbed in the plot and dialogue)
innocently smiles when you realize he's just a kang tae moo copycat
"i didn't copy him i'm the inspiration behind him, rich, smart, pretty and utter perfection,"
"i can't deny the second part... i can't believe nagi's seen business proposal,"
"wait what?"

Lost and Found: A Pirate's Promise
Chapter 22: Onward to the Colosseum
A/N: We are back at it again with another chapter!, this one is a fun one, now we are heading off to Dressrosa! I have a few ideas for Dressrosa, and then its Whole Cake Island, and believe me when yall read the chapter I have for Whole Cake…. Thank you guys so much for liking, reblogging, interacting with my first fan fiction. I will link all chapters once Ive posted the last chapter for the day, but without further ado, lets get to it!
Word count: 5.8K
Sanji x Reader, Sanji x y/n, One piece x reader.
Y/N POV…
Drinking is one thing, but challenging a man known to have a higher tolerance than most is another. But, I wasn’t going to lose this bet.
"Wow, I gotta say Y/N, you've grown to be a better drinker," Zoro smirked, his eyes glinting as he downed his seventh beer, no signs of slowing down.
I raised my mug, matching him drink for drink. "Well, I did learn a thing or two about drinking, thanks to king after all." My words came out with a slight slur, the warmth of the alcohol spreading through my body. I took another swig of my seventh beer, feeling the room spin just a little. But I wasn’t about to back down.
Zoro was watching me with an amused grin, but before I could say anything more, Chopper rushed up beside me, his tiny hooves patting my arm. "That's way too much booze! Your body is still in recovery!" he squeaked, his voice laced with worry.
I giggled, waving him off with a drunken smile. "It's okay, Chopper! I’m feeling fine, see?" I raised my mug again, proving I still had enough strength to lift it.
Chopper puffed up his cheeks in frustration. "No, it’s not fine! You’re still healing from everything that happened at Punk Hazard! You need to rest, not drink yourself into a coma!" His voice was stern, though his worry was endearing.
I chuckled softly, ruffling his fur. "Aw, Chopper, you’re so sweet. But I can handle it. Just a few more, and I’ll be good as new!"
Before Chopper could protest again, Sanji chimed in his voice dripping with frustration. "Mosshead, just end this game already!" He shot Zoro a sharp glare, clearly irritated by the whole contest. "Y/N's had enough. You’re just making things worse."
Zoro smirked, leaning back in his chair with an easy shrug. "What’s the matter, curly brow? Afraid Y/N might outdrink me?" He took another swig, unfazed by Sanji’s complaints.
Sanji huffed, crossing his arms as he glared at Zoro. "No, I’m just tired of you dragging Y/N into your ridiculous contests! A gentleman knows when to call it quits." He glanced at me, concern softening his expression. "And besides, I don’t think Y/N needs to keep proving anything to the likes of you."
I giggled again, feeling a little too lightheaded to care about the bickering. "I’m fine, Sanji. Just a friendly... hiccup... competition."
I'd listen to her if I were you, curly-brow," Zoro taunted, smirking in that infuriating way of his. "Besides, I’m not stopping anytime soon."
I was just about to take another swig, determined to keep going despite the room starting to spin, when suddenly my drink vanished from my hand. "Hey!" I protested, blinking in confusion.
"That's enough, princess," came Law's familiar, cool voice. I turned to see him standing beside me, his usual deadpan expression firmly in place. He had swiped my drink away with ease, as if my competition with Zoro was nothing more than a mild inconvenience.
Before I could argue, Zoro leaned back with a satisfied grin. "Looks like that’s my win, then. You owe me a favor."
I scowled playfully, my head still spinning. "No fair! Law cheated—"
Zoro chuckled, waving off my protest. "A win’s a win Y/N." His smirk was wider now, clearly pleased with himself.
Law, on the other hand, simply shrugged. "You’ve had enough. I don’t need you passing out and making my job harder," he said, his tone flat but with a slight edge of concern.
Sanji huffed, glaring at Zoro. "Well, if you weren’t such a brute, this wouldn’t have happened in the first place."
Zoro ignored him, leaning in closer to me. "Remember that favor. I'll be cashing it in soon."
Before I could retort, I noticed the children gathering to leave, their small faces bright with excitement and gratitude. "Bye pirate guys and gals, we'll miss you!" one of the kids called out, waving energetically.
"Thank you for saving all of us!" another chimed in, their eyes wide with admiration.
"And you know what we want to be when we grow up—pirates just like you!" the last one shouted, their voices full of enthusiasm as they waved goodbye.
I smiled warmly, waving back. "Bye guys! Take care!" I called out, my heart swelling at their sweet farewell.
Luffy, always one to embrace the spirit of adventure, let out a hearty laugh.
As the children disappeared from view, the crew exchanged smiles and waves, the mood light and filled with warmth. “Well, I think it’s time for us to head out,” Luffy said, his excitement barely contained.
Just as I was about to take a step, Sanji swept me up into his arms. “Hey, I can walk!” I protested, though my balance was shaky and my words a bit slurred.
Sanji’s eyes were filled with a mixture of concern and affection. “I know you can, but you’ve had a bit too much to drink. I’m not letting you stumble and fall.”
I giggled, resting my head on his shoulder. “Oh, Sanji, you’re such a sweetheart! I’m perfectly fine.”
From a few paces away, Law’s expression darkened, clearly displeased. “Seriously, Sanji? You think you’re the only one who can play the knight in shining armor?”
With a flick of his wrist, Law activated his Devil Fruit power. “Room,” he said smoothly, and suddenly, I found myself in Law’s arms, Sanji’s hold replaced by his firm grip.
Sanji’s eyes widened, his frustration evident. “What the hell, Law! You just can’t let it go, can you?”
I looked up at Law, feeling a mix of amusement and confusion. “Wow, Law, you’re really making a dramatic entrance.”
Law’s gaze was steady, his smirk playful. “If you’re going to be so protective, I figured I’d step in. Can’t let Sanji have all the fun, can I?”
Zoro, leaning against the wall with an amused grin, interjected. “So, Law, what’s the deal? Why are you tagging along with us now?”
Law remained cool and composed. “We’ve formed an alliance. I’m here to ensure our collaboration goes smoothly.”
Sanji’s jealousy flared as he glared at Law. “An alliance, huh? So now you’re just going to join in and take my place?”
Luffy, practically vibrating with enthusiasm, jumped in. “Yep! We’re allies now, and it’s going to be amazing! More friends mean more fun!”
I giggled, the alcohol making everything seem more amusing. “No one can take your place, Sanji,” I said, my words a bit wobbly but full of warmth.
Law, with his usual cool demeanor, leaned in with a grin. “Ready for a ride, princess?” Before I could respond, he activated his Devil Fruit power, and we floated up into the air, landing softly on the deck of the Sunny. He set me down gently in the grass.
Sanji’s eyes flashed with a mix of irritation and disbelief. “Law! You really need to learn your place!”
As Sanji moved towards Law, clearly ready to confront him, I turned to Sanji with a playful smile. “Sanji, is it okay if I get some water? I’m feeling a bit parched.”
Sanji’s frustration dissolved instantly, replaced by an overly affectionate look. “Oh, Y/N, of course! I’ll get you some water right away!”
Zoro, observing the whole scene, snickered. “Looks like Sanji’s not too happy about sharing the spotlight.”
“He’ll be fine,” I said, giggling and reclining on the grass. The alcohol was starting to wear off, leaving me feeling pleasantly relaxed.
Franky, working on a few adjustments to the ship, called out, “The Sunny is ready to go, Luffy!”
“Alright, guys, let’s set sail!” Luffy cheered, and with that, the crew began their departure from Punk Hazard, heading towards their next destination, Dressrosa.
As the hours passed, the effects of the alcohol continued to subside. The crew settled into their usual routines: Zoro was engaged in his strength training, Robin was engrossed in her book, and Luffy, Usopp, Kinemon, and Momo were basking in the sun, laughing and enjoying the warmth.
I lay back on the grass, feeling the gentle sway of the ship beneath me. Turning to my left, I noticed that Law was no longer around. “I wonder where he could be?” I thought aloud, curiosity piqued. As I continued to lay in the sun just a little while longer, my curiosity about Law's sudden disappearance still lingered.
Laws POV…
As we left Punk Hazard behind, the sight of Y/N lying peacefully in the sun caught my attention. Despite the bandages and the traces of exhaustion, there was a serenity about you that contrasted sharply with the chaos we had just endured. The way you basked in the sun’s warmth, without a care in the world, stirred something deep within me.
I found myself reminiscing about the first time I saw you at Sabaody. The fire in your eyes, the defiant attitude—you had an undeniable presence that intrigued me from the start. Your flirtatious nature and unwavering spirit had made you unforgettable. It was clear to me that you were the missing piece of my life, the one I didn’t know I needed until you were there. I often thought about how much Cora would have admired you—your kindness, your strength, and your capacity for love. I had a feeling you’d be mine soon enough.
After a few hours of contemplating, I decided to leave my spot and head to a quieter area of the ship. I needed to use my Transponder Snail without anyone overhearing. Joker must have already arrived, and I wanted to ensure this conversation remained private.
Law’s voice was cold and measured as he responded, “Well, color me surprised, it’s the boss. Didn’t expect you to show up in person.”
Joker’s voice came through, tinged with mockery, “Oh, Law, it’s been far too long. Such a shame you decided not to show your face earlier.”
Ignoring his taunts, I cut to the point. “I figured you’d want to know where Caesar is.” I let the sound of Caesar’s desperate pleas for help come through the line, taunting him.
“Question regarding my cohorts' bodies—where are they?” Joker’s voice took on a more serious tone.
“I couldn’t say, nor do I care. Baby 5 had it coming for her arrogance,” I responded coolly.
Suddenly, Baby 5’s voice could be heard on the line. “Arrogant! It’s not my fault! That harlot has you wrapped around her finger!” Her words were laced with bitterness, and they made me seethe with anger.
Joker’s voice turned more menacing. “Speaking of your little girl, I hear she’s quite the feisty one. I’m sure I can find a place for her here in the palace. After all, she is a ‘Princess,’ isn’t she? And according to what Vergo said, she’s quite the looker. You know how I am with women—once I see them, I can’t seem to take my hands off them.”
The mention of you in such a context filled me with a burning rage. The protective instinct I had for you flared, and I struggled to keep my voice steady. “Touch her, and you’ll find out just how dangerous it can be to cross me. This isn’t a game.”
I took a deep breath, trying to regain my composure. “Besides, we’re not here to talk about her. We’re here to discuss something else. Let’s negotiate.”
Joker’s laughter echoed on the line. “Come on, Law, get serious. Stop pretending to be an adult and let’s cut to the chase. Where are you now?”
I ignored the taunt and pressed on. “What about your business partner, Kaido? Now, I may just be a brat, but he’s someone you don’t want to piss off, right? I wonder how he might react when he finds out you can’t produce SMILE. Who knows? But he doesn’t strike me as the bargaining type.”
Joker’s tone shifted, a hint of irritation creeping in. “Alright, you’ve carried the terms long enough. Let’s discuss this like grown-ups.”
“Resign from the Seven Warlords,” I said firmly. “You have until tomorrow. If I see the headlines in tomorrow’s paper, then I’ll call you, and the deal’s on. If I don’t see it, then my offer is as good as dead.”
I didn’t wait for his response and ended the call abruptly. The line went dead, leaving me with a sense of grim satisfaction. The terms had been set, and now it was a waiting game. I turned my attention back to the main deck, my mind racing with thoughts of our next steps and the looming threat of Joker’s schemes.
Y/N POV…
“The island has vanished into the horizon,” Robin said, her gaze fixed on the receding land.
“Fire, ice, toxic gas, centaurs, and an evil vice admiral—sheesh,” Sanji added, taking a thoughtful drag of his cigarette. “Good riddance to that miserable hellhole.”
“You got that right,” I agreed, slowly getting up from the grass. My body felt a bit stiff from lying down for so long, but the fresh air was invigorating.
Sanji turned to me with a swooning look. “Y/N, how’s my angel doing?”
I giggled at his dramatic expression. “I’m doing much better, actually. I can’t wait for Chopper to help me remove these bandages. It’ll be nice to move around without feeling so restricted.”
Just then, Caesar’s voice broke through the noise. “Oww, Oww, Oww, easy!” he complained, still restrained by sea prism cuffs.
“Will you quit being a baby!” Chopper retorted. “I’d rather be kicking your ass than treating you!”
“You’re lucky I’m a medical professional. Now hold still,” Chopper said, focusing on his task.
Caesar whimpered, “Oww, be gentle, be gentle!” His voice was a mix of pain and frustration.
I smirked at Sanji, feeling a surge of satisfaction. “Just the man I’ve been looking for,” I said, as I made my way toward Caesar.
“Chopper, can you please step aside for me? I’d like to have a little chat with Caesar,” I said, making my way forward.
“Princess! How are you? How’s that right leg of yours? My, you look quite radiant, and I’m so happy you’re alive and well,” Caesar said, trying to back away from me with a forced cheerfulness.
“Caesar, no one’s going to help you with this one,” I said, a sickly sweet smile playing on my lips. I clenched my right hand and connected it with my left palm, activating its electrical charge.
“Y/N, what are you—” Chopper said, trying to figure out what was about to happen.
“You didn’t think I forgot everything you did to me, did you?” I said with a faux sweetness that barely masked the venom beneath. “How you had me chained not once, but twice! How you had your brokers watch me while I was chained and even comment on what a ‘looker’ I was. Oh, and who could forget you saying you couldn’t wait for me to die?”
My right hand crackled with electricity, fully charged and ready.
“Please! Have mercy!” Caesar begged.
I grabbed him with my left hand, lifting him up to face me. “Caesar, you and I both know I’m here to collect for the pain you’ve caused. Besides, I want to show you a new trick I’ve mastered. Don’t worry; it’s not the one I used on your assistant Monet. This one’s far more advanced.”
I grinned with a dark satisfaction, gripping my left arm tightly. I wrapped my right hand around it, channeling the electrical energy from one arm to the other. The current surged and glowed ominously, the air crackling with raw power.
I focused intently, my eyes narrowing as I prepared to unleash my newly mastered technique. “Now, Bolt!” I commanded, my voice resolute.
A brilliant arc of electricity shot from my hand, crashing down onto Caesar. The intense surge of power engulfed him, sending his body into violent convulsions. His screams of pain were lost in the crackle of the electricity, his movements becoming erratic and uncontrolled.
I watched with a mix of grim satisfaction and detached intensity as the electricity coursed through him. His eyes widened in terror, his pleas for mercy barely audible over the crackling energy. Finally, the surge began to subside, leaving Caesar writhing on the ground, his body twitching sporadically.
I took a step back, surveying the damage. Caesar lay there, his once-proud demeanor shattered, reduced to a pitiful heap of misery. His mumbled apologies were nothing more than a feeble echo of his past arrogance.
I crouched beside him, my expression cold and resolute. “Sorry doesn’t cut it,” I said, my voice low and dangerous. “You’re about to experience a little taste of Hell. Consider this your punishment.”
As Caesar lay sprawled on the deck, unconscious from my electric punishment, I straightened up with a satisfied smirk. Zoro’s gaze lingered on me, his eyes gleaming with a mix of admiration and something darker.
“Well, well,” Zoro said, leaning casually against the railing with a smirk. “I have to admit, that was quite a show. I’m tempted to cash in on that favor sooner rather than later.”
I raised an eyebrow, letting a playful smile curve my lips. “Oh really? And what sort of favor are you imagining?” I asked, my voice dropping to a seductive whisper.
Zoro sauntered over, his gaze never leaving mine, a predatory glint in his eye. “I was thinking maybe a private rendezvous. Somewhere away from prying eyes where you can show me more of those ‘advanced’ tricks you were talking about. I’m curious to see if you can back up that fierce reputation of yours.”
I met his gaze with a playful smirk, letting my eyes linger on him. “A private rendezvous sounds intriguing,” I said, my tone dripping with flirtation. “But what kind of tricks are you hoping to see?”
Zoro’s lips curled into a smirk as he took another step closer, his body heat radiating toward me. “I’m thinking something that’ll leave us both breathless,” he said, his voice husky. “I want to see if you’re as captivating in private as you are in the middle of a fight.”
Sanji’s eyes flared with a mix of anger and protectiveness. “I saw that, moss head! Don’t you dare think you can make a move on Y/N. I already have enough on my plate with Law hanging around!”
Zoro raised an eyebrow, his smirk widening. “Oh? And what’s that supposed to mean? I’m just stating an idea for the favor she owes since she lost the drinking game.”
I laughed, shaking my head. “To be fair, Law took my drink away from me!”
Sanji, seizing the opportunity, wrapped his arms around me in a protective hug. “Don’t worry, Y/N. Mosshead won’t be going along with his plans, not while I’m around.”
I looked up at Sanji and planted a quick kiss on his cheek. His face flushed a deep red. “Aren’t you the sweetest?” I said with a playful grin.
Then, I slowly made my way to Zoro, leaning in to kiss his cheek as well. I whispered lowly, “Looks like you’re going to have to think harder on that favor.” I giggled, stepping back and giving them both a teasing wink.
Zoro’s smirk faltered for a moment, replaced by a look of surprise and contemplation. “Alright, you’ve got me thinking. I’ll come up with something memorable, just you wait.”
“What the hell happened here!” Law’s voice cut through, and I turned to see him eyeing Caesar, who was being patched up by Chopper. His gaze then shifted to me, his expression a mix of curiosity and concern.
“Oh, there you are! I was wondering where you went,” I said, trying to hide my amusement over Caesar’s condition.
“You should have seen it, Traffy. Y/N gave Caesar quite the shock,” Zoro said with a smirk, his eyes glinting with mischief.
Law’s eyes narrowed suspiciously. “What do you mean by shock?” he asked, clearly trying to get the truth out of Zoro.
Before Zoro could respond, Luffy’s voice cut through the tension. “So... Traffy, is Dressrosa cool or what?”
Law sighed, shaking his head. “We’re not going sightseeing,” he said firmly. “We have important business there.”
“Wait! THE Dressrosa?” Kin’emon suddenly exclaimed, his eyes wide.
Law glanced over at him. “What’s the matter? You know the place?”
“Yes, that’s the very destination I was heading to,” Kin’emon replied.
Before the conversation could continue, Nami interrupted, her eyes on the horizon. “Guys, we’re moving crazy fast. The current’s shifted.”
Luffy, oblivious to the mounting tension, just grinned. “Awesome! Let’s go even faster!”
Law pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration but continued explaining the directions, trying to keep things on track. Zoro, leaning casually against the railing, added in his typical sarcastic tone, “Is this guy always such a know-it-all smart ass?”
I giggled at Zoro’s comment, drawing Law’s gaze. He raised an eyebrow at me, his expression somewhere between exasperation and amusement.
Before he could speak, Robin chimed in, her voice calm but curious. “I saw you talking with someone over the transponder snail earlier. Why don’t you tell us who it was?”
I grinned, teasing Law. “So that’s where you’ve been hiding, huh? Keeping secrets?”
Law's expression hardened, his tone serious as he answered, “It was Doflamingo.”
“DOFLAMINGO?!” Usopp shouted, his voice filled with exaggerated shock. His wide eyes and flailing arms added to the dramatics, making everyone glance at him.
“Come on, Usopp,” I said with a chuckle, playfully rolling my eyes. "No need to freak out just yet."
Usopp, still wide-eyed, waved his arms frantically. “He’s the most evil one, Y/N! How can you be so unfazed?”
Before I could answer, Luffy chimed in, “Alright, everyone, gather around! Let’s talk about the plan!” We all gathered around as Luffy began to explain the alliance he and Law had formed.
The crew’s collective gasp filled the air. “You formed an alliance… to kill one of the Four Emperors?!” The surprise in their voices was palpable.
“This plan is pretty great!” Zoro grinned, clearly on board with the idea.
I couldn’t help but grin back at him, the energy contagious. “Oh, you bet it is!”
“It is NOT great!” Usopp exclaimed, still looking like he was one step away from a heart attack. “Wait, Luffy, can you explain this alliance again? Like… clearly?”
“Sure thing, Usopp!” Luffy laughed, completely oblivious to Usopp’s anxiety. “So, we’re joining up with the Heart Pirates to do stuff, and let’s all try to get along, okay?”
Law, standing nearby with his arms crossed, looked visibly annoyed at Luffy’s carefree explanation.
I giggled at the sight, my excitement bubbling over. “Aww, this means I get to see Bepo, Penguin, and Shachi again!” The mere thought of reuniting with them made me giddy. Law's expression softened slightly at my words, though he still maintained his usual stoic demeanor.
Sanji, however, couldn’t help but scoff under his breath, probably not too thrilled with the idea of me hanging out with Law’s crew. Zoro, of course, noticed and shot Sanji a smug look, clearly enjoying the rising tension.
“You know what happens once Luffy makes up his mind,” Sanji said, handing me a glass of water with a concerned look.
“Thanks, Sanji,” I said, taking a sip and giving him a reassuring smile.
“At least the whole kidnapping thing makes sense,” Sanji continued, pointing toward Caesar with a grimace. “Considering it’s not Luffy’s style. Usually, if he brought this weird sheep thing on board, he’d want me to cook it.”
Caesar, still feeling the sting of my previous shock, managed a pained laugh. “Shorororro! Do you simpletons honestly think you’ll get away with this madness? You’re about to have some of the most powerful names hunting you down!”
Caesar sneered, “You pea-brain savages, your stupidity will be your death… And I can’t wait for Doflamingo to kill you, princess!”
As Caesar's taunts echoed through the room, Law tensed, his hand instinctively moving toward his sword. His eyes narrowed, a cold fury evident in his gaze. “Keep pushing and you’ll find out what happens when you push me too far,” he growled, ready to strike if necessary.
Sanji, too, was on edge. He clenched his fists, his knuckles white as he glared at Caesar. “Say another word and I’ll make sure you regret it,” he warned, his voice low and dangerous.
I finished my glass of water, handing it back to Sanji with a smile of gratitude, though my eyes remained locked on Caesar. As soon as he turned away, I clenched my right hand and connected it with my left palm, activating the electrical charge once more.
“Caesar, what did I tell you about making threats?” I said, my voice cold and unwavering. “It seems you still haven’t learned your lesson.”
Without waiting for a response, I delivered a shock-filled punch directly to Caesar, electricity coursing through his body. His pained shrieks echoed, and he convulsed from the intensity of the shock.
“Not cool, Y/N!” Chopper shouted, his voice filled with frustration. “I’m still treating him! Just wait until I’m done!”
I shot Chopper a smirk. “Serves him right for not learning the first time. He’s lucky I didn’t use a second bolt this time.” I leaned in closer to Caesar, my expression icy. “Next time, maybe you’ll think twice before making threats.”
Sanji POV..
The hours had passed since Y/N delivered that electric shock to Caesar. It served him right for making those threats about her. Speaking of Y/N, I hadn’t seen her in a few hours, and it was starting to get dark.
I approached Law, who was hunched over a map, deep in thought. “Hey Traffy, have you seen Y/N? She’s supposed to get her bandages rewrapped and take some medication for her injuries,” I said, my concern evident.
Law looked up, his expression hardening into a glare. Just as he was about to speak, Nami cut in. "Oh, Y/N? Yeah, she’s taking a bath with Momo," Nami said casually.
Law, Kinemon, and I all yelled in unison, "WHAT?!"
Without another word, we rushed to the stairs, determined to see if what Nami said was true. I didn’t care if Momo was only eight years old; there was no way he should be in the bath with Y/N.
As we reached the bath, the door swung open, revealing Y/N wrapped in a short towel, clutching it close to her chest, a towel on her head, and slippers on her feet. Momo, meanwhile, was clinging to Y/N’s hand, his head nuzzled between her chest.
Y/N looked up, noticing our presence, and smiled. “Oh, perfect timing! Kinemon, I need some clothes if you would,” she said. “Momo is holding onto the towel, and I could use some help putting on my clothes as well.”
Our attention, however, was drawn to Momo’s mischievous grin. “What are you grinning at?” we all yelled in unison, startling Momo.
Sanji was the first to react. “We can see right through that act of yours. You think you can get away with this just because you’re a kid?”
Kinemon added, “You must cut off your top, not in shame,” which only made Momo cry.
Law was about to say something when Nami intervened with a punch to our heads. “Hey! Why are you ganging up on a child like that? You jerks!”
“But... but…” I stammered, still processing the situation.
Momo, now visibly upset, ran to Nami and hugged her tightly. “You’re such a good boy,” Nami cooed. “You can sleep with Robin, and me tonight.”
Just then, Momo turned to us with an evil grin that only solidified our suspicions. It was clear that Momo had been enjoying every minute of our confusion and distress. His grin seemed to say, "Gotcha!"
Law, Kinemon, and I exchanged frustrated glances, realizing that Momo’s innocent act had been nothing more than a clever ruse.
“Hey, Y/N, you still need help with putting on your clothes?” Nami asked, her tone warm and considerate.
Y/N turned to her, holding onto her short towel. “I may need something flowy and not too tight. I still have to wrap a fresh set of bandages. I’m hoping with the ointment King gave me, I won’t need them any longer.” Nami nodded.
“Y/N, why don’t I fetch you one of my shirts? It’s oversized and flowy.” I said.
“Why, thank you, Sanji. That would be perfect,” Y/N replied with a grateful smile.
My face flushed, quickly nodded and headed off to fetch the shirt. Law, meanwhile, observed the exchange with a hint of jealousy. He stepped forward, his voice smooth and suggestive. “Y/N, let’s get those bandages taken care of now. Wouldn’t want you catching a cold standing here, although I wouldn’t mind nursing you back to health myself.”
I felt a surge of irritation. Before I could react, Y/N responded with a playful tone, “Thank you, Law. I may need a bit of help getting down, however.”
Law smirked, “That won’t be a problem.”
With a subte, almost challenging glance at me, Law said, “Room,” and with that, he and Y/N disappeared, leaving me to stew in the cool air that now seemed to chill me more than the room.
Y/N POV…
Law teleported us to the medical ward on the Sunny. I clutched my towel, still shivering slightly as I made my way to the small bed. The cold of the room was a stark contrast to the warmth I had hoped for.
“Alright, Y/N,” Law said with a teasing smirk, his eyes glinting with a mix of affection and mischief. “Why don’t you tell the Doctor what you need? I’m all ears.”
“Well, Doctor,” I said, tilting my head and attempting to keep my voice steady, “I’m in need of some fresh bandages, a bit of assistance, and applying some ointment so my wounds heal faster.”
Law's fingers were steady and precise as he applied the ointment to my right leg, but his touch was anything but clinical. Each stroke was deliberate, lingering just a bit longer than necessary, making me squirm as the warmth spread through my skin. I bit my lip to keep any sounds at bay, but a soft sigh escaped as his hand brushed closer to the sensitive areas of my thigh.
When he moved up to my chest, his touch was more intimate. His fingers glided over my skin with a gentle, teasing pressure. I could feel his breath against my skin, and every now and then, his lips would come close, creating a mix of sensations that made me shiver. His touch was both soothing and stimulating, causing me to arch slightly under his ministrations.
“You know,” Law said with a teasing smirk, his eyes never leaving mine, “you’re making it quite difficult to stay professional.”
I looked up at him with a playful smile, my voice barely more than a whisper. “Oh, am I? I suppose that’s part of the fun.”
Law chuckled softly, his gaze darkening with an unreadable emotion. He continued applying the ointment, his touch growing more deliberate as he moved to my left arm. His fingers traced patterns on my skin, each movement slow and deliberate, as if he were savoring every second of it.
As he finished, he leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a husky murmur. “I must admit, you’re quite distracting, Y/N. But in a way that makes it all the more enjoyable.”
I met his gaze with a teasing glint in my eyes. “And you’re quite the expert at keeping things interesting, Doctor.”
Law’s smirk widened, a genuine warmth in his eyes. “Well, I’m glad you think so. Because I have a feeling this isn’t over yet.”
As he spoke, he continued applying the ointment with meticulous care, his touch lingering and gentle. He wrapped the bandages around my injuries, his fingers brushing against my skin with a tenderness that made me shiver. Each movement was deliberate, his attention focused on ensuring that I was as comfortable as possible.
Just then, the door to the medical ward swung open, and Sanji walked in, holding out a blue dress shirt. “Y/N, I got you a dress shirt instead,” he said, his cheeks flushed as he noticed me wrapped in nothing but a towel. “I didn’t know which color you wanted, so I got you blue. I hope you don’t mind.” I looked up at him, a playful smile on my lips. “Sanji, how did you know blue was my favorite color?” I giggled, taking the shirt from him.
Sanji handed me the blue dress shirt, his eyes following me as I slipped it on. The fabric fell smoothly over my body, and I took a deep breath, inhaling the familiar, comforting scent of his cologne. A soft moan escaped my lips, and I looked up at Sanji with a playful grin. “Is this the same cologne you had on Punk Hazard?” I asked, my voice laced with affection. “I’m going to be thinking about you every night now.”
Sanji’s face turned a deep crimson, his eyes widening in surprise and a hint of bashfulness. “I, uh, thought you’d like it,” he stammered, trying to keep his cool but failing as his gaze remained fixed on me.
I made my way towards him, the shirt slipping loosely over my figure. With a mischievous glint in my eye, I deliberately left two buttons undone, letting the shirt fall open slightly. “So, Sanji, do you like what you see?” I teased, my voice light and flirtatious.
Sanji’s eyes were locked on me, his usual confident demeanor faltering under the weight of my teasing. “Y-You look incredible,” he managed to say, his voice trembling with a mix of admiration and nervousness.
Leaning in, I placed a gentle kiss on his cheek, the contact soft but filled with affection. “Thanks for the shirt, Sanji. I’ll be thinking of you whenever I wear it,” I said with a sweet smile.
Sanji’s face was a deep shade of red, his eyes darting away as he tried to regain his composure. “You’re welcome, Y/N,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
With one last flirtatious wink, I turned and headed toward the door. “I’ll see you boys in the morning,” I said, stepping out of the medical ward and making my way to my room.
As I settled into bed, the blue shirt felt like a warm, comforting embrace. The scent of Sanji’s cologne lingered, wrapping around me and making me smile. I drifted off to sleep, filled with thoughts of the evening’s tender moments and the warmth of Sanji’s affection, feeling like I was wrapped in a gentle embrace even in my dreams.

tenderness | bonus scene: banmal

pairing: bang chan x female reader
summary: the first time you call chan 'oppa.'
this is a bonus scene taking place in the tenderness universe, but you don't have to have read tenderness to read this fic! just know that the main character is currently a manager for stray kids. she's also chan's soulmate, which explains why she lives in the dorms with him.
chapter word count: 1.6k
warnings: none!
a/n: a bit of fluff was requested by one of the readers on ao3. the term 'banmal' is used to describe informal speech in korean and is usually for casual conversation between friends, relatives, or people younger than you. i can't properly demonstrate the way that the main character's speech level changes since speech levels don't exist the same way in english. i only modified the honorifics that y/n uses to address the members. this was my first time writing fluff, it was surprisingly fun!

“Noona?” You and Jisung are lounging in the living room after a schedule that miraculously ended early. You're not sure where the other guys are and you don't really care, it's nice to have one on one time with Jisung.
“Hm?” You drag your eyes away from the drama that the two of you have been half heartedly been watching to find him deep in thought.
“You called me Jisung-ssi earlier. You always do that. Why?”
“Ah,” you say, flustered. “It just still feels weird to talk to you guys informally. I don’t want anybody to get the wrong idea.”
“But you don’t call Felix, Felix-ssi! I’ve even heard you call him Lixie before! Why is he special?” Jisung whines.
“It’s different!” you defend yourself. “We talk in English mostly. There’s not really any honorifics or levels of speech. It’d be weirder if I did speak formally to him.”
“Sounds like an excuse, but okay. What do you call Channie-hyung?” he asks with a particular gleam in his eyes.
“Chan-ssi,” you say matter-of-factly. You have to bite back a laugh at the disappointed noise he makes at your response.
“Minho-hyung?”
“Minho-ssi.”
“Changbinnie-hyung?”
“Changbin-ssi,” you reply dutifully.
“You guys are the same age! It doesn’t make sense!” he groans.
“I don’t know what you’re expecting,” you say, amused. “I talk to all of you the same.”
“Are you kidding me? You’re hopeless.” He shakes his head dramatically. “You’re soulmates with Channie-hyung! That means you’re basically family to all of us. Listen, at work? Sure, fine, you can be all polite and formal, I get it. But in the dorms?”
“Jisu-”
“Here, the guys are coming over for dinner tonight. Please please please, can you call Minho-hyung oppa to his face?”
“What? No!” you say immediately.
“Pleaseee,” he draws out the word playfully. He shuffles closer and takes your hands in his, pouting exaggeratedly. “Just once! I just want to see his reaction! I know that all of us have told you at one point to speak to us comfortably. He wouldn’t get mad at you, I promise!”
“I’m not going to do it,” you laugh, trying to disentangle your hands.
“You can tell him that I forced you to! I’ll volunteer to clean the dishes after dinner! I’ll be better about cleaning the bathroom! I’ll buy you bubble tea for a week! I’ll buy you new shoes! I’ll stop changing my mind a million times when we’re trying to decide what to order during schedules! I'll write you a song! Please please please, Y/n-noona!”
“I-” you falter. Jisung immediately brightens, his mouth curves into a heart-shaped smile. “Fine. Only because you look so cute.”
Jisung cheers, jumping up and punching the air with his fists.
“You’re the best!!”
“I’m going to blame you for it,” you warn.
“Of course. Even if hyung kills me, it’ll be worth it in the moment.” He beams.
—
At dinner, Jisung sits to your left and every few minutes, he nudges your leg in an attempt to prompt you into speaking. You ignore it, continuing to eat as if nothing is happening. Yes, you agreed to follow along with Jisung’s silly idea, but you still want it to happen naturally, otherwise it would be even more out of place. As much as this is kind of a joke, it is starting to feel a bit strange always using polite speech and you're curious to see how everyone will react.
Opportunity strikes when you stretch to grab one of the side dishes that happen to be in front of Minho. You can't quite reach it sitting, but before you can stand, Minho picks up one of the serving utensils and picks out the best piece, placing it into your bowl. He serves himself next, but you know it's just to play off his kind gesture. You're genuinely grateful for his thoughtfulness.
“Thank you, Minho-oppa,” you say, making sure to keep your voice casual.
Everyone freezes. Minho is good at maintaining his nonchalant expression, but his ears betray him by slowly turning red. Your cheeks are flushed to match and even without looking, you can tell the rest of the boys are stunned. It takes a great effort on your part to not turn to glance at Chan, although you can practically feel his gaze burning into the side of your face.
Out of the corner of your eye, you see Jeongin elbow Hyunjin in the stomach and mouth "Oppa?" in disbelief.
Finally, Minho recovers enough to clear his throat loudly and say, "it's nothing, I was going to get some anyway."
Jisung, on the other hand, is grinning like an idiot.
“Hyung! You should have seen your reaction, I wish I had taken a picture!” He cries out, laughing loudly.
“What reaction?” Minho tries to play it off.
“Hyung, your ears.” Hyunjin tugs on one teasingly, then instantly apologises and cowers when Minho turns to glare at him.
"Call me oppa too, Y/n!" Changbin says excitedly, standing up to serve you from the dish closest to him.
"We're the same age, Changbin-ah, I'm not going to call you oppa," you tease. He just laughs, delighted to be on the receiving end of your more casual speech.
“If Y/n calls Minho-hyung oppa, does that mean she needs to call Chan-hyung ajhussi?” Seungmin pipes up. Across the table, Hyunjin dissolves into laughter at the thought.
—
Chan doesn’t mention it all evening, even though the boys continue to tease Minho, calling him ‘oppa’ instead of ‘hyung’ when they address him and taking every opportunity to call Chan ‘ajhussi’. They’ve both given out countless headlocks in revenge, but it’s all in good humour. Eventually, Minho, Felix, Seungmin, and Jeongin head home, and the rest of the boys drift off into their own rooms.
After washing up, you join Chan in his room, not wanting to hog the bathroom for any longer than required. He’s already set to sleep and had been sitting in bed scrolling on his phone until you had walked in. Through the reflection of the little mirror that you’re using to do your skincare routine, you can see that he’s watching you.
“You know,” he says steadily. “You can- you can call me that too, if you want.” You pause at the carefully worded request. You make eye contact with him through the mirror and watch as the tips of his ears and the tops of his cheeks slowly pinkens.
“Call you what?” you ask, deliberately playing oblivious.
“You know,” he flounders.
“Do I?" you wonder, tapping a finger to your lips teasingly.
“I mean, you don’t have to if you don’t feel comfortable, I just thought that if you were going to talk to the boys more casually then you can do the same. You’re my soulmate, things don’t have to be so formal all the time. I don’t want to force you to do anything, but I wouldn’t mind, at all! I know Jisung probably was the one to get you to say that to Minho and it was really funny to see his reaction. Uhm. I mean, you can really call me anything that you want! Chan-ssi. Chan-oppa. Chan-ah, actually no that’s kind of weird maybe not that one. Uh if it makes it less weird you can use my English name too! Chris, Christopher, whatever,” he trails off, then buries his face in his hands with a groan. “Sorry, I don’t know what I’m saying.”
You're finished your skincare routine so you put away all the containers and turn in your seat so that you're fully facing him. You take a second to collect yourself, then pitch your voice so it's small and cutesy, a far cry from how you normally talk.
"Oppa," you test. His eyes immediately shoot up to meet yours, cheeks darkening more than they had before. "Do you want me to call you Channie-oppa?" You tilt your head to one side and widen your eyes.
"Argh.” This time, he turns to smash his face in his pillow to hide himself, pulling the blanket over his head for good measure.
"Channie-oppa, why are you hiding? I thought this is what you wanted." You lightly tug at the blanket, but he holds it tight, shaking his head vigorously. You've never been the type to perform aegyo, but it's surprisingly fun and you can't deny that you're enjoying Chan's reaction. After another minute, he pokes his head out looking a bit sheepish.
“You are really cute when you say that,” he admits. “And I really like to hear that you feel comfortable using banmal with us.”
“I am comfortable with everyone, I have been for a while,” you say. “And you’re also really cute when I call you oppa.”
His eyes crinkle as he smiles and you take the opportunity to lean forward and poke one of the dimples that appear. In retaliation, he grips the corners of the blanket and collects you in his arms, effectively swallowing you in the mess of fabric. He pulls you so that you lose balance and fall onto the bed, cradled in his arms. You feel so safe in his embrace and the both of you momentarily fall silent.
“Okay, I think we should sleep now,” Chan says eventually. “Good night, Y/n.”
“Good night… Channie-Oppa,” you respond.
Even though you can’t see Chan in the dark, you know that he’s smiling. It’s enough that you drift off to sleep with a smile as well.

The repairs of Bitterbridge were slow and arduous but you felt a peace at being home. If you squinted long enough at the halls filled with lightened red stains you could almost hear your mother scolding Edric for tracking in mud or your father’s booming laugh.
“My lady,” Your handmaiden, Gaella, looked at you with concern as she laced your corset tightly. “You aren’t truly thinking of attending, are you?”
You sighed heavily, the letter containing a summons to King’s Landing feeling heavy in your hands. “I have no choice. As easily as Aegon allows me to keep Bitterbridge, he could just as easily take it away.”
“But you’ve only just returned.” Gaella was your mother’s handmaid, and survived the sack only by hiding in the castle’s secret passageways before escaping to Old Town until returning was safe. You had almost cried tears of joy at seeing her familiar face upon your return.
“I know.” Your shoulders fell as you spoke. “But the repairs are ahead of schedule and shall continue as planned thanks to Lady Tyrell.” The clever lady of Highgarden had taken pity on you, alone with no family and decided to aid in funding the reconstruction of Bitterbridge.
“You are welcome to join me if you’d like.” You turn to face Gaella’s older face lined with slight wrinkles. “I could really use a friend there.”
The older woman shuffled on her feet before nodding slowly. “My lady, I will follow you wherever you ask.”
You gave her a grateful smile as she finished and you stood in front of a cracked full length mirror.
“We leave tomorrow at first light,” You said, brushing your skirts out. “Take the rest of the day to pack and prepare.”
Gaella curtsied deeply before walking towards the door. “I will be ready, my lady.” She promised confidently.
You shot her a wordless but thankful smile as she left and found yourself lost in your thoughts, rereading the letter in your hands for what must have been the hundredth time.
Lady Y/n Caswell,
You are cordially summoned to attend the celebration marking the end of the Dance of Dragons and the triumphant ascension of King Aegon, second of his name, to his rightful throne.
Alongside the festivities, both Princes will be choosing an eligible lady for their brides. As Prince Aemond’s own lady wife passed in childbirth alongside the babe and Daeron has come of age it is the Crown’s wish to see the Targaryen line grow strong once again after such needless loss.
A group of such eligible ladies has already been decided by the council and as a young lady of a reputable house under the Tyrell banner you will be considered alongside other ladies for this honor.
The celebrations shall begin in a month's time and your attendance is expected to mend the fragile relationship between House Caswell and the Throne.
You scoffed in disbelief at the words that did not change no matter how many times you read them. You knew that your invitation to the capital was only given out of expectation and to further prove your loyalty to the Green King. And as for the last half of the letter, you felt bile rise into your throat. Daeron had burnt your home to a crisp and his army slaughtered your people. And from tales you heard about his older brother you knew that he was no better.
You knew that such news; however unappealing of an offer it was to you, was being met with much joy and planning by the other houses in the realm. ‘Good.’ You thought to yourself with a tired smile. ‘Perhaps they will keep the two princes busy while I go through the motions.’
Leaving your chambers to meet with the carpenters tasked on the reconstruction of your keep, you took the long path down to the grand entrance, refusing to pass the roof that your beloved mother had hung herself from in despair. Perhaps one day the stabbing pain you felt at her loss would fade into a duller sensation, but today was not that day.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/5fa7e10062d2590917adceb2842b8593/c8078b4b863e2224-22/s540x810/99449a7bc8616d9c87458b829d2c5cef4dd4f676.jpg)
The month spent on the road was long and boring. And you found yourself switching from riding in the carriage to being on horseback in an effort to change your scenery. Of course this impromptu trip did not excuse you from the large stacks of letters and missives that you were required to pour over as Lady of your house. Bills and requests for aid filled the majority of your day as you worked ceaselessly to aid your people in whatever way you could.
You had never expected to find yourself back in the capital after the events of your last stay and your mouth grew dry as the familiar keep loomed at you from a distance. The once Black banners that hung from outer walls were replaced with a garish green and you bit your lip nervously as your carriage pulled up to the entrance.
A young squire, dressed in Hightower green, approached you with a welcoming smile before leading you to one of the many guest chambers that the Keep had. Although you were not opposed to his help, the Red Keep was a building you knew as well as your own ancestral home and the memories within it made you want to retreat to your rooms immediately.
You spent the rest of that day pacing and exploring the new rooms, finding that you had been provided with a washroom, chamber pot area, bed room, and seating area which seemed rather grandly decorated for a lady of a lesser house. Especially one that had sided with Rhaenyra.
‘I suppose that there are worse places to be imprisoned in.’ You thought to yourself while eating dinner in your seating room. Laughter and joyous conversations were able to be made out through the thick walls and it was obvious that the rest of the King’s guests had taken their dinner in the main hall to begin the endless preening and idle flattery that they believed would raise their station.
“Are you sure that you don’t want to eat with the rest of the court?” Gaella had asked as she set a platter of roasted goose glazed in honey in front of you. Your mouth watered at the sight of the meal and were relieved to see that the chefs in the Keep were still as skilled as they had been months ago.
“Absolutely sure.” You grabbed your utensils and sliced into the meat with a scoff. “King Aegon does not require my presence for his ‘celebration’ until the morrow and seeing as I have no desire to torture myself more than necessary, I plan on remaining away from the court as much as I am able.”
You popped a grape into your mouth after you spoke and chewed it slowly. “Besides, the royal family have more important guests to worry about than me. I will gratefully allow them to monopolize their time.”
Now, with an old tome about the histories of Asshai by your side, you ate in relative comfort. You were alone, yes, but you found that you had gotten used to the feeling as the war had gone on. You had only just arrived back at court and you already lulled yourself to sleep that night with thoughts about returning home as soon as you could. The pleasant dreams chasing away the regular nightmares you had of water forcing its way into your throat as you sank deep into the Gullet.

Houdini Act (Eleventh Doctor/Reader)
Note: Hi guys :) This is my first ever fic I'm posting on here. I'm planning on making this a whole series, so expect more chapters to follow!! I really hope you enjoy <3
Wordcount: 4.9k
“I didn’t know you brought someone else on,” Amy caught the movement in one of the many doorways from the control room. She saw a figure, just barely, walking briskly through the halls. It was a girl, that much she could tell, who wore a book bag stuffed to the brim. “When were you going to introduce us?”
When she turned back to him, the Doctor, he looked perplexed. He had not seen anyone new and certainly had not invited someone in, “Introduce you to who?”
“The girl, she just walked past the doorway over there,” she motioned to the hall behind her. She watched as the Doctor investigated and sent a confused glance to Rory.
“Maybe you should get some sleep,” the Doctor came back out and started pushing the two towards their bedroom. “You humans are so fragile with your sleeping schedules, you’ll go mad if you don’t nap every so often. Go on, promise I won’t do anything fun without you.”
After they left with no protest, the Doctor quickly took to the console, asking the TARDIS to scan for any life other than him and his two human companions. If something had managed to sneak into the TARDIS without her blocking them out, they could have a very serious problem. He found nothing for what felt like hours, scanning and searching until, for just a few seconds, there was another form of life detected.
He went to the footage to find what looked like a human girl. Mid twenties with a school bag. From the look of her phone that she carried, she was from the late 2010s, 2019 to be exact. But just as quickly as she appeared, she vanished. He replayed the footage yet every time, she just… disappeared.
For months, this went on. The girl would appear for a moment, not acknowledging anyone in the room before disappearing in the blink of an eye. They were never fast enough to catch her, could never get close enough to touch her. At first, Amy and Rory kept the encounters to themselves, not wanting to find out that hallucinations were some crazy side effect of time travel, the Doctor kept it to himself because he didn’t want to scare the Ponds by telling them there was an unknown entity in their occasional home.
It all changed when they were lounging in the console room, discussing where to go. They heard a woman’s voice, clear as day, that said, “I’m not sure that’s a good idea.”
If that wasn’t menacing on its own, the small laugh that followed after certainly was. The Doctor and Rory both looked at Amy, but they all knew she hadn’t been the one to say it. He motioned for them to remain quiet and to stay put while he carefully took his sonic out and crept out in the hall. It took him fifteen minutes to circle back to the couple, empty handed.
“I’ve been seeing someone,” Amy stated, breaking the tense silence. Rory whipped his head over to her. “Oh, not like that!” He gave her another look. “Okay, yes like that, but that’s you! I’ve been seeing a girl around. But not constantly just-“
“For a moment,” The Doctor finished. “Yes, I’ve been seeing her too. The question is, who is she? And how did she get here? And also how does she disappear so quickly? There’s quite a load of questions that follow her.”
“Is she dangerous?” Rory asked.
The Doctor was silent, contemplating before he said, “Very. Keep on your toes, I’ll find a way to keep her here so we can have a word.”
—
“No Mark, that doesn’t make any sense,” you sat back, lounging in the wheeled chair of the study room you and your roommate booked. Your feet rested comfortably on the table while your legs held the Physics 101 textbook. “Look, just read page… hold on, um… 352. It explains the concept in simple terms.”
“I’ve read it a million times, it won’t make me understand it better,” he spun around and stared up at the ceiling. “That’s why I asked you because you’re really good at dumbing things down.”
“I’m taking that personally,” you took your feet off of the table and went to start putting your stuff away. Mark made no complaints and did the same, “Let’s just head back home. Maybe Chelsea is done blowing her boyfriend so we can get takeout.”
“Dude, if you ever mention Chelsea’s greasy rat of a boyfriend ever again, I’m gonna throw up,” he fake gagged as you opened the door with him behind you.
“Okay, this one is better than the last,” you meekly defended. “At least he doesn’t have a mullet, so that’s an immediate upgrade.”
“No,” Mark argued while you both left the building and fell into step with the other MIT students. “Bring back Mullet Man. Grease Rat has nothing on him and I don’t want our apartment to start smelling like garbage and feces had a baby.”
“Mark,” you warned, though your tone was soft.
“I bet he uses fifteen in one shampoo,” he continued. You laughed out loud, earning annoyed glances from the group of girls that were sitting in the grass a few feet away. “He doesn’t have a job, lives with his parents, doesn’t wash himself, and is leeching off of all of our groceries. And he wears the same stupid camo jacket and black cap every day! And if it were a money problem I would understand, but his parents are filthy rich! Like rolling in dog shit rich, okay?! Not to mention—“
“Mark!” You cut him off, laughing when he just rolled his eyes and grumbled. “For someone who hates that grease ball so much, you sure do talk about him a lot.”
“Oh! Do not even start!” He dramatically poked your chest with his finger. “You are one to talk. When Chelsea was dating your cousin, you wouldn’t shut up about it for weeks.”
“He’s a pervert! He has one of those little pedo staches on his top lip and his head is always bent at a weird angle!” You scoffed, mimicking the awkward head position with your own as you both entered the apartment building. “He has no respect for himself or women and I will not let our poor little Chels be defiled by that… that garbage heap of a man!”
“Oh, so you can rant about a man being a worthless shithole but when I do it suddenly I’m being over dramatic,” he trudged up the stairs behind you. He stayed quiet when you didn’t answer until he broke the silence with a quiet, “It’s because I’m black isn’t it?”
You both laughed loudly, the joyous sound echoing throughout the stairwell. It took only another minute to get to your apartment, the sock that was previously on the knob had been taken off, much to your relief.
“Honey, we’re home!” Mark yelled down the short hall, knowing full well that Chelsea and her boyfriend were asleep. He turned back to you, setting his bag down on the counter. “Horny little shits. She always used to warn us beforehand but now we come back to socks on the doorknob? His crusty socks? The absolute audacity of that man, I swear to god.”
“She needs better taste in men,” you hummed, looking through the fridge.
“Wasn’t your first boyfriend’s name Chad?”
“Okay, that was a test run, he doesn’t count,” you grabbed a coke can and tossed another one to him, bumping the fridge door with your hip to shut it. “It was three months. What’s three months in the eyes of the universe?”
“I’m not sure, but you lost your virginity to someone named Chad and I think that’s something to be ashamed of.”
“You’re an asshole, you know that?” You sipped the cold drink. Mark just winked and slid the various takeout menus toward you. “Thai, Indian, or Chinese?”
“Thai, I’ve been craving it since the Calc exam,” he hopped into one of the bar stools. You dialed the number and placed your usual order before you and Mark both sat in silence, occasionally showing the other a funny TikTok. When the knock came, he went to get it and paid for the food. “I don’t care if this is unhealthy, it makes me happy.”
You each got your own servings when Chelsea’s boyfriend, Brady, strolled out of her room in just his boxers and a sweat stained white tank, reeking of BO. He said nothing and looked in the bag of Thai food, humming when he saw the remaining half that you hadn’t gotten to unpack yet. He grabbed the bag, but you took the other side to stop him.
“What the fuck is your problem?” He immediately started yelling, making you send an annoyed glance to Mark.
“This is our food, Brady, order your own,” you tugged it out of his grasp and handed it to Mark who held it tightly to himself. “Everyone knows you have the money to, so just get it yourself.”
“You’re such a bitch!” He shouted walking around the counter towards you. “I’m fucking exhausted and all I want is something to eat! You don’t even need the food! You’re already so fucking fat! God, I don’t know what Mark sees in you, you’re a pig!”
“I’m gay,” Mark said. He looked like he was going to continue, but Brady cut him off.
“Are you fucking kidding me?!” He looked offended. He stomped over to Chelsea’s room and almost kicked the door down when he opened it. He went in and there was a bunch of rustling. “You didn’t tell me you lived with a fucking bitch and a gay boy! I should’ve known you were a mistake. I never should have dated you. We’re fucking over!”
“Brady!” Chelsea exclaimed, running after him out of her room. Brady now had his phone, some shorts, and shoes. He stormed up to you and ripped your bag out of the stool next to you. Before you could do anything, you watched in horror as he hit the bag against the edge of the marble counter and then threw the bag on the ground, stomping on it repeatedly, “Brady, please!”
He shoved her away, sending her tumbling to the tile before he stormed out of the apartment. You immediately rushed over to Chelsea and helped her up, making sure she wasn’t seriously hurt. She was crying and kept apologizing, but both you and Mark assured her that none of it was her fault.
You left her with Mark and kneeled next to your bag. The Physics textbook was fine, not that you were worried about it, the only concern you had was about your laptop. You had a thesis due that night and Chelsea said she would look over it before you turned it in. If it got deleted, you had no way of getting it back or rewriting it in less than four hours.
At first, you thought it made it out okay, but when you pulled it out all the way, you could see that it was bent in the middle and there were little glass pieces from the screen. You held your breath as you opened it. No surprise, the screen was shattered and it wouldn’t turn on.
“Shit,” you groaned, dropping it back onto your bag as you rubbed a hand over your face. Chelsea heard your sigh and started crying even harder, saying that it was his fault her crazy boyfriend broke it. You shook your head and slid over to her. “No, Chels, it’s not your fault. He was the one who broke it, not you. I’m not mad at you, okay?”
“But your thesis—“
“I can just run down to the Tech store across the street,” you gave her a reassuring smile, and rubbed her arm soothingly. “It’ll be fine. I can just write half the pages for half credit and maybe offer to give Professor Davidson my firstborn or something.”
You left her with Mark, grabbed your wallet, keys, and bag, and headed down to the lobby. You knew that you were lying through your teeth about being able to somewhat salvage your thesis. The tech store closed an hour ago, but you needed to get some air. Maybe have a good cry or something.
The sun had almost finished setting and the sky was dark. It wasn’t exactly a smart idea to be out on your own, though you didn’t care as you made your way to University Park. Maybe those True Crime podcasts hadn’t gotten to you considering you had no worries other than your incoming F.
The park was quiet, nearly empty save for a few couples wandering. You went to the spot that you, Mark, and Chelsea liked to hang out or study, right under a large oak. Sitting with your back against the trunk, you looked over the clearing over the park. There was a soft breeze, just cold enough to make you shiver. You let out a shaky sigh, feeling your face heat up and tears stinging your eyes. You looked up, blinking back the tears as your throat began to close up.
You were already struggling enough, you couldn’t afford another failing grade. When you had gotten into MIT, your parents were overjoyed. You were the first in the family to go to college and since you were an only child, you couldn’t disappoint your parents by flunking out.
Before you knew it, your warm cheeks were cooled by the tears that you tried to quickly wipe away. Your breaths were ragged and you buried your head in your hands. For a second you felt like you were about to throw up, like something had zapped your stomach with nausea. You bit your tongue and moved a hand to cover your mouth.
“Who are you and what have you been doing to my TARDIS?” A man’s voice pulled you out of it. You looked up, eyes red rimmed and puffy, nose dripping with snot. He had fluffy brown hair, a bow tie, and a glowing green stick. “Well? Out with it, we haven’t got all day.”
You looked up at him from your seated position and he towered over you as he stood. With a sniffle, you asked, “What?”
“People are only allowed into the TARDIS with my approval, but somehow you’ve managed to sneak on undetected. Usually I would be impressed but you put the lives of my companions in danger,” he threatened, keeping his voice low. He opened his mouth to continue, but you held up your hand to stop him.
“Sorry, I know that some people are into the whole role play in the park thing, but I’m not, so if you could just take it somewhere else, that would be great,” you dried your face off and wiped your nose on your sleeve, even though that was disgusting. “I really need to just wallow right now and I’d really appreciate it if you'd let me do it in peace.”
“Role play?” He repeated.
You rolled your eyes, getting more frustrated as he wouldn’t let it go, “There’s a time and a place for these kind of things! I’m clearly not in the mood so just fucking drop it!”
You pushed yourself up, but your hand didn’t touch any of the cool grass. In fact, you hadn’t noticed how light and warm it had gotten. You looked down at your hand and found a metal floor. Quickly, you scrambled up and looked around, trying to figure how you had gotten there.
“Keep your hands where I can see them!” A new voice yelled, a woman’s voice. You turned to find a woman with red hair, who somehow had the same glowing green stick that the other man did. You glared and stomped toward her. “Stay back! Doctor?”
“Hold on, I’m scanning!” The first man yelled. He was now in the center of the huge room. “Keep her there!”
She nodded and stepped toward you, shoving the stick in your face. You took a step back but smacked the stick out of her hand, making her shriek and step back in fear. Another man stepped in front of her and took a karate position of some sort, “Don’t touch her! Doctor?!”
“How many fucking people are there?!” You groaned and turned to look at the man in the center. “Where the hell am I? I don’t know who you all think you are, but kidnapping is still illegal!”
When you tried to walk toward the center, the woman showed back up in front of you, with the stick. They backed you up until your back hit a wall. No, a door. You could work with a door. You swiftly turned and pulled the two doors open. Just as you were about to step out, you screamed and scrambled to get back in, slamming the door shut behind you. Behind those doors was nothing. Literally just a black void that continued on forever.
“What the f—“
“Stop with the swearing!” The second man commanded. Your eyes began to tear up and your lip quivered, making the man and woman send each other a wary glance. “Doctor?”
“Working!” The other man, you guessed was a Doctor of some sort, replied with a frustrated tone.
“Look, you can take my wallet and my keys, it’s not a lot,” your voice shook as you tried desperately not to cry in front of your captors. “But, please… let me go home. I promise I won’t tell anyone, just let me go.”
“Doctor, she’s… crying,” the man in front of you said. “What do we do?”
“Nothing, it’s a trick, just let me finish scanning her.”
“I’m sorry, I know I was being difficult and I smacked your little green stick, but I just want to go home. Please, let me go,” you begged, tears quickly pouring as you realized that no one knew where you were before they took you. You wouldn’t see your friends or family again and your parents would never know what happened to their little girl. “If this is about Brady, I’ll get him whatever he wants. I’ll do anything, just let me go.”
“Ponds, step back, give her room,” Doctor whatever-his-name-is instructed, slowly and carefully walking toward you. This freaked you out even more as you thought he was coming to hurt you on his own, clearly being the one in charge. You cried harder but kept yourself from making any noise, just shaking against the cold wood doors. “How could you be human?”
The question seemed strange but you could tell he was throwing the question out there instead of directing it at you. Once he got a few feet away from you, he stopped. He took the stick from the girl and pocketed it in his jacket before taking another step toward you.
“Please, please no,” you closed your eyes and whispered to whatever god there could be, begging them to save you. A cold, calloused hand grabbed yours, making you whimper and squeeze your eyes shut even tighter. He placed something soft in your hand and you looked down to find a handkerchief.
“What’s your name?” He asked softly, as to not scare you more. Your gaze lingered on the handkerchief and he added, “I thought you might like to wipe your face.”
You cautiously did so, wiping the tear tracks that trailed down your neck. Thankfully your nose wasn’t too runny and gross, so just sniffles every now and then. After a beat, you figured that you might as well tell him if he was going to kill you, “(Y/N). My name is (Y/N).”
“Hello there, (Y/N),” he smiled. “I’m the Doctor. This is Amy and Rory. The Ponds.”
You glanced at the two others who only stared at the Doctor with a confused expression. You looked back to him and he just sighed and said, “We must have frightened you.”
You said nothing, instead scanning the room for a way out as you dig your fingernails into the skin of your palm. The Doctor shooed the other two away, asking them to go to their room while he talked to you. Once they were out of earshot, he walked to the center and started pressing buttons.
“Come here,” he beckoned, still messing with things on whatever mechanism was in the middle of the room. You hesitantly walked forward and joined him, careful to keep a decent amount of room between you. He pushed a screen in front of you and as you watched, you saw yourself constantly appearing. You always had your bag on you, but what threw you off is that these clips showed you in different parts of this futuristic place that you were currently in.
“What is this?” You asked quietly, looking over to the Doctor.
“You’ve been appearing on my ship for months,” he explained, his face serious. “But only for a few moments before you disappear. We’ve been trying to find you, trying to figure out who you are. Once the TARDIS pinpointed your temporal energy, I used a remote vortex manipulator to locate and transfer you to us.”
He was using words and lingo that was foreign and strange. You could hardly understand it and even questioned if he was speaking English. Looking around, you were hoping to find Brady and his friends trying to hide so they could make fun of you. That would be an ideal situation rather than what this man was trying to explain.
“What is this place?”
“This is my ship,” he seemed to cheer up at that question, smiling joyfully as he continued to explain. The Doctor looked adoringly at the centerpiece. “Time and relative dimension in space, or TARDIS for short. She can travel through all of time and space, but she doesn’t always land where I want her to.” He paused to look back at you. “I can take you home, if you’d like. I want to know why you’ve been appearing and I believe I’ll need your help, but if you want to leave, I won’t stop you.”
“Take me home.”
The Doctor pressed his lips together but complied, walking around the console and making the ship jump to a start. You grabbed on to the railing as the room shook and nearly launched you over the edge. He looked over to you, like he was about to ask something, but put his attention back on the TARDIS. Once it came to a stop, you ran to the doors, opening them to find the park, just the same as when you left it.
You took a few steps out, relishing in the fact that you hadn’t been brutally murdered when the Doctor stood next to you and asked, “Why were you wallowing?”
“Sorry?”
“You said earlier that you’d prefer to wallow,” he mentioned, frowning as your shoulders slumped and you shook your head. “What happened?”
“Just…” your voice shook and you felt your face heat up again. You took a breath and said, “My roommate’s boyfriend destroyed my laptop. My 20 page thesis is due in four hours and I have no way to get it back. If I fail this class, I- Uh, I have to either drop out or retake the class. But I don’t have the money so.. And my parents were so excited when I got accepted. If I—“
“What class?”
“Biochemistry and biophysics,” You answered, still sulking. “I’ve tried so hard, but something isn’t clicking. I just- I can’t understand it. Which is stupid because if I can understand physics, I should be able to study biophysics, right? But I can’t.”
“I can,” he was smiling. You gave him a dirty look and scoffed. “I can write your thesis too. I actually already have a few on that topic anyway, but I’ll have to cut it down. Do you get extra credit for having more than two hundred pages?”
“That’s not funny,” you snapped, turning to face him. Your brows were furrowed and you poked his chest with your finger, making him stumble back. “This is my life we’re talking about. Everything is going wrong and the last thing I need is you making me feel even worse with your stupid teasing!”
“I'm not teasing or trying to make you feel bad,” the Doctor tried to assure you. “I really do have more than enough papers written about every aspect of human science. If you just wait here a moment, I’ll get them to you. I can get rid of some parts on the way out. It is quite chilly, so feel free to wait in the TARDIS.”
You watched him walk away, your eyes following him as he walked back into his ship. As you saw him get further and further away, you noticed how small the door was. In fact, all of it was small, except the inside. You walked closer and carefully circled the police box that could have been more than three feet wide. Poking your head back inside, your brows furrowed. You measured the width of one side of the box with your arm, but obviously when you went inside, the room exceeded your arm for quite a bit.
“What…” you whispered, once again walking around the box. As someone who was taking physics, you were pretty sure this was impossible. A small smile came to your face and you went inside, counting your steps as you walked the perimeter of the room. You cautiously walked up the steps toward what seemed to be the center of the room. The middle console was adorned with all different types of buttons and levers, you were tempted to press something just to see what would happen, but you held yourself back. You felt your stress melt away as you spun around, taking in the entire room once more. “It’s… It’s bigger-”
“On the inside?” the Doctor’s voice startled you out of the tranquility you had just settled into, making you turn to see him holding a stack of papers. “Yes, yes it is.”
He walked closer to you, you thought that maybe you should step back in case he tried something, but for some reason, a small voice in the back of your head told you that it was okay. That he was okay. As promised, he handed you the papers. You flipped through the pages, your eyes scanning over the hundreds of pages of research about biophysics. The pages were entrancing, going over theories and ideas that you hadn’t even thought of. You were in awe at the work he had done.
“I can’t take this,” you breathed, still looking through the papers. “It wouldn’t be right, it’s not-”
“Well, considering I slightly kidnapped you, I feel it’s a fair trade,” The Doctor mused, making you chuckle a bit. You finally looked up at him, finding him studying you while you held the research. He perked up as if he had suddenly remembered something. You watched as he quickly ran around the console and grabbed something out of site. He rushed back with a giddy grin and presented his findings to you. “And as for the laptop, yours was probably rubbish anyway. I prefer handwritten, so I think you’ll find more use in this than I ever will.”
“You…” your eyes settled on the pristine laptop he was holding in front of you. You weren’t sure what or when it was from, but considering your previous laptop was bent in half, this one would automatically serve you much better. “Are you serious?”
“Of course I am,” he shrugged, as if it should’ve been obvious. You set the paper down by your feet and gently took the laptop, opening it to watch the screen come to life. He circled around to be standing next to you, “The battery should last a hundred years at least, so you’ll never even need to charge it.”
Your eyes pricked with tears, you were silently praying for this to be real. You were almost convinced the last ten minutes of your life were a dream or a hallucination. Your breath caught in your throat and you gently placed the laptop onto the papers at your feet before turning and hugging the Doctor. The embrace caught him off guard but he was quick to gain his balance, returning the gesture. You sighed, “Thank you.”
“What are kidnappers for?” He smiled as you pulled away. You let out a breathy laugh and looked toward the open door of the TARDIS. “Right, I suppose you want to get going.”
“Actually,” you hesitated, shuffling a little on your feet. “Well, I need to type up my thesis again, but I can’t do it in just four hours. You said this, uh, TARDIS, can travel through time?” He nodded, a small smile growing on his face. “Maybe I could stay for a little? Just until I finish my thesis and then I’ll leave. And, I mean, since I’m here, if you need to run any tests to figure out why you’ve been seeing me… I guess that would be okay.”
“Brilliant!” He clapped his hands together excitedly. His energy was contagious and you found yourself smiling at the mad man as he ran around the console. “But first, I’d like to apologize. Let me take you on a trip somewhere, anywhere you want to go in all of time and space. It’ll help clear your head some.”
He was looking at you expectantly, waiting for the go ahead. You were nervous, and though part of you said to turn back and forget you ever met this man, every other bone in your body longed to stay. You broke out into a big grin and nodded, “Take me away.”

❀❀❀
“This is bullshit.” You deadpanned, half-assedly hugging your right arm to your chest with your left.
Jungwon could only chuckle at how obvious it was that you didn’t want to be here, at how visceral your hatred was.
Cute, he thought.
You whipped your head to your boyfriend’s sound of amusement while he was stretching his arms, happiness written all over his face from your “pain”.
“I’m serious, Wonie!” You whined from your place on the ground, now in a side lunge. He only snickered again, a bit louder this time.
“I know you’re serious, babe; you’ve been complaining about it ever since the beginning of the semester.” Jungwon continued his stretching routine, prepared for the whole tirade that you were most likely going to lay on him — not that he ever minded.
“Like, what’s the point of the mile run? To punish us?”
“It’s to keep you active and fit, dearest.” Jungwon spoke in a saccharine voice, giving the same answer to the same question that you ask nearly every other Monday. But it did little to soothe your anger over school mandated exercise.
“Like hell that’s the reason! I think it’s a plot…” You mumbled the last part. You both came out of your stretches and turned to look at each other. Jungwon had a soft smile of adoration, while you wore a petulant pout that the former cooed at.
“You’re just so adorable!” Jungwon leaned in closer, gently petting your hair. You could feel your face blush at his words and actions.
“Stop flirting with me, Won.” You mumbled under your breath so it was only between you and Jungwon.
“I’m not flirting. I’m merely speaking the truth.” You had half the mind to kiss — slap — the smirk off his smug face that had dimples pinched into each squishy cheek, only serving to make you more infuriated.
Jungwon didn’t pay attention to your body that shook in anger since he knew you weren’t actually angry — just very flustered.
And he loved to fluster you.
“What’s going on, lovebirds?” You and Jungwon turned to the voice that approached you; your hand that was mid-air and about to slap Jungwon’s hand away from your head — which was still heavily petting you — slowly descending back to your side.
Jungwon walked over and brought him in for a bro hug.
“Trouble in paradise?” Riki questioned as Jungwon put his arm around the younger’s (and shorter’s) shoulders.
Though a joke, it was a fair question given the scene he had walked in on: Jungwon up close and personal with his hand on your head, a sly smile on his face; and you nearly shaking like a leaf with a beet-red face.
Riki knew it wasn’t a lover’s quarrel. He knew you two and that scene better than that.
“No.”
“Yes.”
Riki looked between the two of you and your different answers for a second before snorting with a burst of laughter.
“Riiiiiiight.” He said in the most unconvinced way, drawing out the vowel.
“Hey, guys!”
You looked over and waved at the three new people who had traveled over to your trio — Jake, Heeseung, and Sunghoon– who then waved back.
“Ready for the mile, everyone?” Heeseung smiled. Before anyone had the chance to reply, you answered with a loud and prolonged groan of irritation that probably would’ve echoed had you all not been outside.
Heeseung let out a puff of laughter. “I forgot, Y/n — you’re not exactly one for exercise, are you?” He smirked.
“Nooooooo...” You plopped your forehead against Jungwon’s left shoulder with a childish whine, having made it closer to his side during your friends’ appearances.
Jungwon made noises of fondness at your cuteness and laid his head on top of yours. He brought up his arm that was attached to the shoulder you were laying on in order to pat and pet the side of your head.
You didn’t bother making a fuss about it this time, instead nuzzling further into him and moving your head inwards to his neck, standing slightly in front of him.
The moment of closeness between you two, and the sounds of adoration and awe from the boys, was then interrupted by a very loud and obnoxious fake throwing up sound.
“Ew, why are you two so lovey-dovey?” Sunoo rhetorically asked, throwing a disgusted side-eye as he approached the rest of you. Jay snickered, trailing slightly behind, and gave him a nudge.
“Why are you still single?” While Riki was never very good at holding in his laughter, and did not even bother trying this time around, the rest of the boys tried their best to stifle their joyous sounds as Sunoo shot you a glare that held nothing but contempt.
“I will kill you, Y/n.” He spoke lowly, but you just rolled your eyes playfully while dismissing his empty threat; replying—
“Yeah, yeah, whatever.” Jungwon let out a small chuckle and pat the top of your head before wrapping it back around your waist.
A loud ring of a whistle alerted all eight of you as your heads shot to its source.
“Well,” Sunghoon started, “time for the torture to commence.”
Your classmates were then brought over to the starting line of the track and field, where the teacher placed you all in a sort of clump.
Jungwon took his wireless earbuds out of his pants pocket, placing the right in his ear while offering the left one to you.
He put the case back into its previous spot, muscle memory from your guys’ makeshift routine driving his actions.
You took it and placed it snuggly in your ear, anticipating the start of the “Mile Monday😩” playlist you and Jungwon had made with some honorable mentions from the other boys.
Since you two were bonafide lovers of music, it being one of the few things to calm you and your temper (besides the cat boy himself), you two made a couple’s playlist alongside your several others for every other type of the occasion.
This particular one had upbeat, uplifting, and just general feel good vibes.
Perfect.
Jungwon turned to look at you once again with that soft smile, as if he was trying to soothe your lingering negative feelings about what you were all about to do. Ever the empath.
“Are you ready?” You couldn’t help but smile back.
Jungwon was always so good at putting you in a good mood or distracting you from the bad things, not that this was necessarily bad as you had thought (though you would never admit that).
You let out a dramatic sigh, making Jungwon laugh.
“I suppose. Promise you won’t run ahead of me?” You smirked, lifting your pinky up.
Jungwon reflected your expression back, still laughing, at your gimmick. He locked his finger with yours.
“As always, darling.” Your lips turned up as your heart filled with warmth at the pet name and his ever-present, patient smile.
“Alright, girls and boys!”
You broke the physical contact to turn to Mr. Park, who stood in front of your classmate’s clump.
“You all know the drill: Complete the four laps around the track in twenty minutes or less. You can walk or run, but remember to not push yourselves and keep your own pace.” Everyone nodded along with the professor’s words.
“Alright! Timer starts…” Mr. Park stepped over to the side, timer in hand.
“NOW!”
At his go ahead, some students sprinted, some jogged, and some started off with just walking.
Heeseung and Jay were the first to zoom off at the front of the pack, speeding forward like their life depended on it.
Jake and Sunghoon jogged in the beginning, but soon got competitive with each other and decided to race.
Riki and Sunoo decided to preserve their energy for the time being and just stayed near the back to chat.
Jungwon and you started with a light jog; wanting to get this over with, but not going so far as to end the mile with throwing up.
You were doing quite well and were able to make it through the entirety of one full lap before slowing down to walk half a lap, and then speeding back up; Jungwon followed suit with whatever you did.
“I’d say we’re not doing too bad, no?” You questioned, slightly winded, but not yet holding onto any debilitating stitch in your side.
You two were now back to walking with two full rounds down.
“Not too bad, sure. But I think we can do even better…” You whipped your head over to Jungwon for the second time this evening, this time with an incredulous look at his mischievous expression.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” You asked tentatively and slightly scared, but Jungwon’s smirk just widened.
“I say we jog nonstop to the end.” You stopped in your tracks at this.
“No way in hell am I doing that, Yang Jungwon.” Jungwon seemed to have expected your refusal.
“No need to pull out the government name, darling. I’m merely suggesting that we get the mile done faster. The sprinters and most of the joggers are already finished.”
You followed where Jungwon gestured to, a patch of grass at the center of the track where a little more than a handful of people were gathered.
Lying down, chilling in groups; chatting and just relaxing.
You could see Heeseung and Jay lying flat down on their backs with their empty water bottles, probably from chugging them right after they finished.
Sunghoon and Jake were about a foot away from them, the former laughing obnoxiously in the latter’s face as he got onto his stomach and started to do push-ups; a punishment for losing whatever competition was going on between them, you were sure.
You winced in empathy as you witnessed the pure pain Jake had on his face as he went through with the penalty.
As for Riki and Sunoo, it looked like they had just finished their turn with the mile. They walked over to the four older boys and plopped down next to them. Riki got on his phone while Sunoo passed him a water, keeping one for himself.
“Isn’t that what you want?” Jungwon could feel the victory on the tip of his tongue, knowing you’d take his bait. He saw you subconsciously bite your lip in envy at seeing all of your friends the way they were.
You turned back to face your sly boyfriend.
“Of course it is! You know that this is the last thing I want to be doing right now.” Jungwon nodded before continuing to walk.
“Then what’s stopping you, hm?”
You started to become genuinely concerned that you were going to sock your boyfriend in his perfectly beautiful face at the rate of his teasing and taunting.
(Whether that was with your lips or your fist — TBD.)
But you knew that he was trying to motivate you. He was just doing it in a very frustrating way.
“It wasn’t really on my agenda to end up on the floor, dead, at the end of this class.” You sarcastically replied with a glare.
“Oh, come on, baby. You and I both know it takes more than jogging two laps to take you down.”
Well, when he said it that way.
“How about this?” Jungwon leaned in closer to your face with his hands clasped behind his back.
“If you’re able to jog the whole time for the last two laps, I’ll treat you to ice cream and anything you want at the snack bar.” This caught your attention as your widened eyes shot up to meet his, intrigue coloring your irises in a way that made Jungwon giggle in adoration.
“I’ll throw in infinite kisses.”
Jungwon then pecked your left cheek.
“As a tester.”
You breathed heavily, almost sounding like a wistful sigh.
To hell with it.
“Then let’s go.” Once you had started to walk with him, Jungwon started to gradually pick up the pace, forcing you to do so as well.
You kept his deal in mind and pushed yourself beyond what you were originally able to, subconsciously mouthing along to BAEKHYUN’s “Betcha”.
You internally chortled.
How fitting.
As you and Jungwon neared the end of your last lap, the boys had risen from their areas of rest and came to stand near the finishing line.
They started cheering once you rounded the last corner of the track.
“Come on, guys, you can do it! Just a little more!”
“Yang Jungwon! Yang Jungwon!”
“Y/l/n Y/n! Y/l/n Y/n!”
“*Weird, loud, siren noises that don’t sound like they should be able to come from a human but they are.*”
“Let’s go, lovebirds!”
“LET’S GAUR!”
If you weren’t so focused on your legs not failing you, you’d have started to tear up at the display.
Just then, you heard Jungwon — nearly out of breath but still going — speak in a quieter voice compared to your guys’ personal cheerleaders.
“Come on, baby. Let’s finish this.”
A grin spread across your lips at your boyfriend’s encouragement; pumping your legs even faster, surpassing Jungwon by a couple of feet in a sprint and crossing the finish line.
The six boys crowded around as you collapsed to the ground on your hands and knees, now spilling words of praise.
Jungwon crossed promptly after you and joined with a smile on his face that showed the epitome of proudness. He bent down to lock eyes with you and placed his hand on your left shoulder.
“You alright, darling?” You nodded with an exhausted, but equally proud smile.
Jungwon beamed back before helping you back onto your feet.
“Well I’ll say, Jungwon and Y/n,” Mr. Park walked over to your group, clipboard in hand, “that’s your best time yet!”
The rest of the boys continued to yell their congratulations as Mr. Park went back over to his previous spot in order to log the other student’s times.
You gasped in happiness at the news. Once you turned back to Jungwon, he picked you up in a hug and spun you around.
When you were brought back down, you were met with Jungwon’s soft lips on your own — tasting the strawberry chapstick you gifted him for your previous anniversary. You wrapped your arms around his neck, slightly coming onto your tippy-toes while his hands held onto your waist for stability. You both smiled into the kiss before you pulled away.
“Now get me ice cream.” Jungwon laughed cutely and caressed your head.
“Whatever you want, love…” He pressed his forehead to yours. As you two were about to kiss again, there was a chorus of excitement.
“Ice cream? I heard ‘ice cream.’” Jungwon groaned quietly and you began to laugh. Jake had overheard and was now hyping the rest of the boys up with the idea of getting ice cream.
“Snacks too, Jakey.” You added in. You giggled at how his eyes lit up and how energetic the guys got.
Jungwon faintly knocked his forehead against yours with a pout, he knew there was no stopping his friends from tagging along his date (and from shaking him down for ice cream and snacks).
You press a firm kiss to his left cheek, briefly relishing in how soft and pillowy the skin is. The little frown was instantaneously replaced with a shy grin. You didn’t allow yourself to become bashful, pushing yourself up to lay your lips on his in a sugary embrace.
The two of you stood in your own little world, barely aware of the six boys debating whether or not they should also take a trip to the convenience store at the corner.

Happilyfeatherafter's ficrec Fridays
Happy Friday everyone. Time for my third week of fics I've read and loved recently. It's been a busy one so just a few this week, but they're all brilliant and with fortuitous timing if you're not one to read WIPs as two are about to be completed this weekend. If you missed last week's you can find it here for more!
19 January 2024
it dawns darling on the daffodil pastures by fleeceframe (@tasteslikevelvet) - what can I say? I audibly gasped when I saw the email notification that this had been posted. Every fleeceframe fic is like being gently told it's okay to slip away for a little while and just feel, and oh boy does this one deliver on that promise. A new instalment in the lovely garden tending series, but can be read as a standalone, this features sweet subby Dean asking his gentle dom Cas to take care of him, with as fleeceframe says "religious tones in the sexy fashion, and a decent amount of plot sprinkled in." When a hunt almost ends in disaster, Dean reflects on what it means to have the unconditional love of his angel watching over him. (Siri, play Radio Company.)
Wait for the Ricochet by @bobwess gives me all the time travel shenanigans I could hope for bringing a young teen Sam and Dean forward to the bunker to meet tfw circa season 12. A wip, it just updated with a new chapter that totally made me cry with all the young queer feelings. A lovely balance of fish out of water plot and coming to terms with a future whilst reckoning with your past, with wonderful sibling dynamics as well as a burgeoning destiel relationship that's still tentatively feeling it's way.
where there is darkness by quiettewandering (@wanderingcas) has been such a wonderful wip to follow along and the final chapters are being posted this weekend HAVE JUST BEEN POSTED!!! so there's no better time to start reading. I'm not ready to let these guys go! With an incredible amount of research, this is lighthouse keeper Dean (and Sam) in a post-war setting exploring how Dean keeps a handle on his ptsd whilst also grappling with having seen his father die. Meanwhile Cas has a past packed full of secrets, and where better to run and hide than a job at an isolated lighthouse where nobody knows him. They're each other's lights in the darkness whilst the ghosts of the past haunt them all, in this eerie and gothic romantic story that truly grips you by the throat.
Fortunate Son by @friendofcarlotta is another wip that's about to post its final chapter NOW COMPLETE and absolute masterclass in character development. Set during the Vietnam war, Sam is a law student and conscientious objector, Cas the son of a strict rich and religious family who is bought out of participating, and Dean determined to follow in his father's footsteps to become a war hero like the stories he heard when he was younger. Despite butting heads at first, Dean and Cas soon find themselves falling for each other. But the war is vicious, and unjust, and they all must grapple with how it impacts their lives in unexpected ways.
(and heck, because I can, and because this is what I was doing last weekend in lieu of reading, here's my Dean Winchester SPNWIN voiceover audio post, and my first ever attempt at an AMV fanvid featuring Ada Monroe).

Hey guys! I’m alive again! (shocker)
And I’ve been writing consistently again! (another shocker)
I kind of fell off in 2019 because I moved out west and ended up spending a ton of time outside. I hardly used my phone that whole summer, so when I tried to get back into writing by 2020, the writer’s block was heaaavy.
Recently I came back to writing reader inserts for Transformers again and I remembered how much I love it. For years I was posting everything on Quotev, but I’d really like to reach more people if it’s possible. This fic was my own escape from life and Bumblebee has always been my biggest comfort character, so I want to continue sharing it if others find some kind of comfort in it like I originally intended. That being said I’m going to continue posting on Quotev, but I’ll also be posting both stories here!
I’d love to continue the reboot of my first fic (based in TFA and sort of like an AU because instead of Sari, they find you) and the sequel fic (based in TFP). If you’re a Bumblebee lover like myself, I’d love it if you’d take a look! Feel free to check them out on Quotev, my user there is Bumblebutt. But PLEASE be aware that I wrote and finished IKYS specifically when I was like, 13 - 16 years old. It gets slightly better as you read, but overall it is still classic cringeworthy teenaged girl writing. Hence the rewrite.💀
Here are the blurbs for both fics!
₊ ⊹ 🐝 ⊹ ₊ I’ll Keep You Safe - TFA Bumblebee/fem!reader (currently rewriting) ₊ ⊹ 🐝 ⊹ ₊
Detroit was not where you wanted to move to, but it was now your only option after your grandmother’s passing. So you move in with your only living relative and soon come to find yourself infatuated with the team of giant alien robots protecting the city. They take a sudden interest in you too when their scout, Bumblebee, rescues you from a precarious incident and a close bond quickly forms between you and the young ‘Bot.
However, things take a turn when the Decepticons set their sights on you. So much so that they hire a bounty hunter to capture you alongside their efforts. Bumblebee would do anything to keep you safe, but he and the rest of his small Autobot team have their work cut out for them. His worst nightmare is failing to keep his promise to you—and with the way their circumstances keep getting tested—that just may be on his horizon.
₊ ⊹ 🐝 ⊹ ₊ Heart of His Spark - TFP Bumblebee/fem!reader (IKYS Sequel) ₊ ⊹ 🐝 ⊹ ₊
It’s been years since you last saw your best friend. You were thrown into witness protection after the Autobots’ departure and life had been so plain and simple ever since. The quiet peace was more than welcome, but the loneliness that accompanies it is almost unbearable at times. That is, until one random Wednesday afternoon when some kid from Nevada gives you a call.
Before you know it, you’re thrust back into life at his side again. The struggle of trying to balance your past trauma with what’s happening everyday in Cybertronian affairs has an iron grip on you. But Bumblebee now has two charges to look after, and you’re never going to let what happened to you, happen to these three kids—no matter what Bumblebee promises.
Go ahead and zip over to Quotev if you’d like, and thank you for reading! New chapters coming soon. :)
