2 Elul 5784 (4-5 September 2024)
The invention of the moveable type printing press in the fifty third century of the Hebrew calendar set off far reaching transformations in numerous human endeavors, with the study of halakha being no exception. Prior to mechanical printing, each copy of any book had to be laboriously and meticulously copied by hand, with the result being that most people simply did not own books. For many centuries after the Talmud was first put into writing rather than being transmitted entirely as an oral tradition through repetition and memorization, most Jewish study was still performed collectively, with hand-copied seforim being discussed and commented on collectively in batei midrash. Hand-made copies had to be very carefully checked to ensure a text remained the same through multiple copyings and variants were still often introduced. And most Jews would not have owned any books personally, with the exception of especially erudite scholars. The printing press made mass production, and thus mass ownership of books, possible. The result was not just more books, but different kinds of books. Most halakhic seforim prior to the invention of printing assumed a high level of expertise from their readers— they were written not for the average Jew but for scholars engaged in the multigenerational process of halakhic rulings, and assumed a high level of familiarity with the entirety of the Tanakh and Talmud and participation in the pandiasporic community of Torah scholarship and halakhic analysis. Those who weren’t already experts in these subjects were assumed to have teachers and colleagues who would guide them as they interacted with halakhic texts. Rather than reading commentaries directly, Jews who weren’t engaged in the lifelong pursuit of Torah learning were expected to consult somebody with that expertise on any practical matter in which they needed guidance.
The printing press, by giving non-experts access to private book ownership, created demand for introductory texts for a general audience without a thorough background in thousands of years of halakhic debate. One of the most legendary texts to meet this demand was the Shulkhan Arukh, a halakhic compendium by Yosef Karo, which was first printed on the second of Elul 5325.
Karo was born into a Sephardi family in Toledo four years prior to the edict of expulsion issued by Ferdinand and Isabella. His family journeyed through a full range of the potential refuges found by Sephardi emigrants, spending five years in Portugal before that monarchy followed suit in expelling Jewish subjects, followed by years in Morocco, Nikopolis, Adrianopolis, Thessaloniki, Istanbul, and finally Tzfat in the Galilee. These travels introduced Karo to a wide range of Torah scholars and communal minhagim, and he began to harbor hopes of creating a halakhic code which would serve to unify Jewish practices throughout the diaspora. Karo’s main text, Beit Yosef, sought not only to state halakhic conclusions in an encyclopedic manner but to provide detailed examinations of the generations of debates behind those conclusions. The Shulkhan Arukh was a reference text which presented only the halakhic conclusions, without the details of the logic by which those conclusions were reached. While the book’s author and a majority of rabbinical sages of the time considered it insufficient for drawing conclusions about halakha due to its simplicity and far from traditional univocality, the book proved hugely popular with the Jewish masses, who wanted a reference text they could keep at home which would offer answers to daily practical questions. It was precisely what Karo and his contemporaries saw as the book’s oversimplification of a gloriously rich and varied tradition that made it approachable and beloved.
Karo himself realized during the process of composing his magnum opus, Beit Yosef, that his youthful hopes for bringing about global uniformity in halakhic practice were misguided. In his later years he spoke out against attempts to use his works to pressure communities with distinct minhagim or who chose to hold by other poskim to adopt his conclusions, emphasizing that Judaism was the process of engaging with halakhic reasoning and debate and should be defined by variety, not an insistence on adherence to any one set of halakhic rulings. And in fact his landmark code, which harmonized generations of Sephardi tradition, was soon joined by a commentary by one of Karo’s contemporaries, Moshe Isserles, which delineated the distinct Ashkenazi minhagim which differed from Karo. This text came to be known as the Mappah, or tablecloth, to the Shulkhan Arukh, or set table, and has been printed as an integrated part of the text beginning twelve years after its first printing. Other integrated commentaries followed as well, injecting the multivocality of Jewish tradition back into Karo’s simplified halakhic compendium. To this day, the Shulkhan Arukh remains the most influential and widely consulted single halakhic code ever compiled.

There are three reasons why an international audience should care about the otherwise insignificant Canadian city of Thunder Bay, a community of 120,000 souls 100km North of the American border right in the middle of the world’s second most spacious nation-state.
The first is that, as Canada’s murder and hate-crime capital, with the vast majority of these terrors directed at Indigenous people, roughly 13-20 percent of the population, its example has a lot to teach us about the dire failure of the Canadian model of liberal capitalism, corporate multiculturalism, and half-hearted “reconciliation.”
Second, as a troubled (post-)extractive and logistics-based economy in a “first-world” country a country that exports and finances extractive industries around the world — its patterns of racist violence reveal something profound about capitalism today.
Finally, Thunder Bay’s problems demand, and are generating, the kind of radical, grassroots solutions that point towards the kind of transformations all communities need to embrace in the years to come to overcome the dangerous intertwined orders of contemporary colonialism and capitalism [...].
---
The isolation, the economic marginality, and the history of extraction and racial resentments all contribute to, but cannot completely explain, the staggering degree of racism in the city. [...] Like many police forces in Canada, officers in the Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) have been known to drive Indigenous people out to the outskirts of town, take their shoes and coats, and leave them to walk back or freeze to death. Unlike most police forces in Canada, the TBPS has recently been found to be plagued with profound “systemic racism” by two independent and high-profile reports. [...] The real reason for the investigations was the deaths of seven Indigenous youth, most from remote Northern communities, most in the city to access high school education or medical services denied to them in their communities. [...]
---
As scholars Damien Lee and Jana-Rae Yerxa note, many precedents stand behind these fears. Indigenous people end up dead in Thunder Bay at staggering rates. [...] Just before the most recent police reports were issued, the mayor (a former Police Association president), the police chief (a fool) and the city’s most successful lawyer (a convicted child molestor) were all implicated in a scandal involving a blend of sexual abuse, extortion, and breach of trust. [...]
Meanwhile, just as I moved to the city in early 2017, an Indigenous woman was fatally injured in the street when one of a gang of white teenagers out joyriding threw a heavy metal trailer hitch at her from their speeding car. It took her several agonizing months to die from her internal injuries. [...]
---
The rank, racist and reactionary hypocrisy so common in Canada and in Thunder Bay is, unfortunately, often mistaken for merely a cultural anachronism, which can be solved through better public education, greater cultural sensitivity and more opportunities to celebrate diversity. This has, for instance, been the approach to the problems of racist policing in the city: another “cultural competency” workshop [...].
In spite of a great deal of rhetoric about “nation-to-nation” negotiations by the Trudeau government, it is profoundly clear, as Mi’Kmaq lawyer and professor Pam Palmater warns, that the State does not and cannot accept the idea that Indigenous people would be allowed to say “no” to, for instance, mines, forestry, corporate fishing or pipelines [...].
---
To this day Canada is a key player in a global capitalist imperium that specializes in extractive industries and extractive forms of debt.
The Mining Association of Canada reports that “the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) and TSX Venture Exchange accounted for 57 percent of the global mining equity raised in 2016.” As Alain Deneault and William Sacher have noted, Canada has historically structured its laws and commercial norms to empower the theft of indigenous lands to be violently transformed into “resources” for export, a specialization that is now itself exported around the world as Canadian-owned or -funded corporations are called upon to “develop” mines and extractive projects globally.
Every Canadian with savings is necessarily complicit: almost all pension funds, banks and other investment vehicles here are wrapped up in the TSX and therefore the extractive industry. Meanwhile, as Peter Hudson illustrates, Canada also has a long legacy of renovating national, municipal and personal debt into a tool of neocolonialism, notably in the Caribbean where Canadian banks have enjoyed profound influence, even monopolies. [...]
The ruling class and international capital, working hand in glove, have consistently used divide-and-conquer techniques to sew the seeds of racism that undermine solidarity. Thunder Bay is only a particularly poignant example, a place so small and marginalized that it cannot sustain the veneer of polite, civil, cheerful liberalism that is the country’s brand.

The Role of Youth in Politics: Shaping the Future
Youth involvement in politics has become increasingly prominent and essential in shaping the future of societies worldwide. As the new generation brings fresh perspectives, energy, and innovative ideas, their participation in the political arena is pivotal to the evolution of democratic governance and social progress.
A New Wave of Engagement
The dynamic nature of young individuals often translates into a genuine desire for change. This demographic is typically more attuned to contemporary issues such as climate change, technological advancements, and social justice. Their engagement in politics ensures these critical issues receive the attention they deserve. For instance, the global climate movement, spearheaded by young activists like Greta Thunberg, has significantly influenced environmental policies and raised awareness about the urgency of addressing climate change.
Bridging the Generational Gap
Youth participation in politics also helps bridge the generational gap that often exists within political systems. Older generations may possess experience and a historical perspective, but they may also be more resistant to change. Young politicians and activists introduce new approaches and question established norms, fostering a more inclusive and forward-thinking political environment. This interaction between generations can lead to more comprehensive and balanced policy-making, benefiting society as a whole.
Digital Natives Driving Change
The youth, being digital natives, utilize technology and social media platforms to mobilize support, spread awareness, and organize movements. This digital proficiency allows them to reach a broader audience quickly and efficiently. Campaigns that resonate on social media can rapidly gain traction, as seen in various social and political movements across the globe. This tech-savvy approach not only amplifies their voices but also democratizes the political process, making it more accessible to those who might have been previously marginalized.
Overcoming barriers
Despite the enthusiasm and potential of young people, they often face significant barriers to political participation. These obstacles include lack of experience, limited access to political networks, and sometimes societal norms that undervalue their contributions. However, youth are increasingly overcoming these challenges through education, mentorship programs, and the youth wings of political parties. These avenues provide young individuals with the necessary skills, knowledge, and opportunities to make meaningful contributions to politics.
Policy Impact
The impact of youth in politics is evident in various policy changes and innovations. For example, young lawmakers have been at the forefront of advocating for progressive policies on issues such as renewable energy, LGBTQ+ rights, and education reform. Their ability to think outside traditional paradigms often results in creative solutions to persistent problems. Additionally, youth-led initiatives frequently prioritize sustainability and long-term benefits, ensuring that policies are not only effective in the present but also beneficial for future generations.
1. Civic Engagement: The Power of Youth Voices
1.1. Voter Turnout and Political Participation
Young voters, particularly those from the millennial generation and Gen Z, have the potential to significantly impact elections. Their collective voice can sway electoral outcomes, influence policy decisions, and shape the future of the nation. However, historically, youth voter turnout has been lower than that of older age groups. Encouraging active participation through voter registration drives, educational campaigns, and accessible polling locations is essential.
1.2. Grassroots Activism and Social Movements
Youth-led social movements have catalyzed change throughout history. From the civil rights movement to climate activism, young people have been at the forefront of advocating for justice, equality, and human rights. Their passion, energy, and commitment drive movements that challenge the status quo and demand systemic reforms.
2. Policy Influence: Advocacy and representation
2.1. Advocacy Organizations and Youth-Led Initiatives
Numerous advocacy organizations focus on youth issues, amplifying their voices on topics such as education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. These organizations provide platforms for young activists to collaborate, share ideas, and advocate for policies that directly impact their lives. Examples include the Sunrise Movement, March for Our Lives, and the Youth Climate Strike.
2.2. Youth Representation in Elected Offices
While progress has been made, there remains a gap in youth representation in elected offices. Encouraging young people to run for local, state, and federal positions is vital. When youth leaders hold office, they bring fresh perspectives, innovative solutions, and a commitment to addressing generational challenges.
3. Evolving Democracy: Technology and Civic Education
3.1. Digital Citizenship and Online Activism
The digital age has transformed political engagement. Social media platforms allow young people to connect, organize, and mobilize like never before. Hashtags, viral campaigns, and online petitions enable youth to raise awareness, build coalitions, and advocate for change. However, digital literacy and critical thinking skills are essential to navigating the complexities of online discourse.
3.2. Civic Education and Schools
Strengthening civic education in schools is crucial. Educators play a pivotal role in fostering informed citizens who understand their rights, responsibilities, and the democratic process. Teaching civics, media literacy, and the importance of civil discourse equip young people to actively participate in shaping their communities and the nation.
4. Challenges and the Way Forward
4.1. Overcoming Apathy and Disillusionment
Challenges persist. Some young people feel disillusioned by political polarization, corruption, and systemic barriers. Addressing these concerns requires fostering hope, emphasizing the impact of collective action, and highlighting success stories of youth-driven change.
4.2. Intersectionality and Inclusivity
Recognizing the diversity within the youth demographic is essential. Intersectionality—considering race, gender, socioeconomic status, and other factors—ensures that policies and advocacy efforts are inclusive and equitable.
Conclusion: Youth as Architects of Tomorrow
The role of youth in US politics extends beyond voting booths and rallies. It encompasses resilience, creativity, and a commitment to building a more just and sustainable society. As we look ahead, let us celebrate the vibrancy of youth engagement and empower young leaders to shape a brighter future for all.
The involvement of youth in politics is crucial for the continuous growth and adaptation of political systems. As they bring new ideas, challenge the status quo, and utilize modern tools to advocate for change, their participation ensures a more vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic political landscape. Encouraging and supporting youth involvement in politics is not only beneficial for addressing current issues but is also crucial for building a resilient and progressive future.
The active participation of young people in shaping the political landscape of the United States is both crucial and transformative. As we delve into the multifaceted role of youth in US politics, we encounter a dynamic interplay of ideals, challenges, and opportunities. Let us explore this topic through the lens of civic engagement, policy influence, and the evolving landscape of American democracy.

Teaching Current Events in the Classroom Through Ecopoetry
Last week, my students spent time viewing weather reports, watching projections and talking about Hurricane Lee. After gauging their interest in the hurricane, I decided to use short lessons that allowed them to steer the conversation. They used their experience with post tropical storm Fiona in 2022 to engage in the daily lessons. Most of my students are not yet 10, but their conversations and insights told me it is an area of interest, or perhaps concern, for them. What can Adora Svitak teach us?
I have always felt it was important to teach current issues in an age appropriate manner. I believe students are curious about their world and want to know more about it. As a parent, I want to shelter my children from some of the harsh realities, but I also know the importance of teaching them the truth. Young educational activist Adora Svitak said:
"By bringing current events into the classroom, everyday discussion, and social media, maybe we don't need to wait for our grandchildren's questions to remind us we should have paid more attention to current events."
Adora Svitak https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/adora_svitak_594720
Adora Svitak and Paulo Freire: What is the connection?
This young activist reminds me of Paulo Freire. Freire believed that teaching adult learners to read would help them see their own oppression. This knowledge could then transform their lives through action. Teaching current events in the classroom, can do the same. Elizabeth Lange, in her 2023 book Transformative Sustainability Education, stated that Freire’s:
"literacy process was called conscientization as adult learners become conscious of the root causes of their oppression and then took collective action to improve their lives" (Lange, 2023, pg. 76).
This is similar to Svitak's belief that children need to understand current events, so they can begin their work toward change. To learn more about Paulo Freire’s theory of education, watch the following video.
youtube
An informative academic article regarding Freire's transformative learning theory can be found here:
The Ecopoetry Connection
One major current issue that faces children globally is climate change. Extreme weather events, loss of ecosystems, endangered species and species at risk, pollution, environmental disasters or social system failures are all partly the result of climate change. We need look no further than Great Thunberg to see how these issues are affecting children and young adults. Her global climate strike has mobilized millions of students throughout the world. My own students have hosted small rallies outside our school as a way to tell adults they want change. Youth do have the intelligence, willingness and creativity to take action against climate change. Young spoken word poet, Amanda Gorman, gives us a glimpse as to what youth can do:
Black eco-poets, such as Frank X Walter use their experience with oppression and resilience in his poems. Contemporary eco-poets are using their word to teach about environmental impacts to our natural world. Below is Walter's poem Love Letter to the World.
https://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/8-black-eco-poets-who-inspire-us#:~:text=%E2%80%9CEco%2Dpoetics%E2%80%9D%20%20may%20be,finding%20home%20away%20from%20home.
Edinburgh Napier University Professor Sam Illingworth states that ecopoet Elise Paschen, uses her poem The Tree Agreement, to
"promote the idea of the agency people possess in protecting and preserving their local environment. These poems discuss neighborhood resistance to tree felling and challenge our need to make a mark on the world."
Eco-poetry is more than poetry about the environment. It tells a story that is meant to expand the reader's thinking and make connections between humankind and the litany of social issues that surround their lives. As Eleanor Flowerday (2021) states,
“Eco-poetry roots you in your environment both physically but also in the way we tell stories to one another. It provides that line of connection to your surroundings that is so necessary in founding a relationship with the natural world: that feeling that you actually belong there.”
As an educator, I believe eco-poetry has a role to play in helping to transform the global climate crisis. Eco-poetry has a place in every language arts curriculum because the climate crisis effects everyone. The poets, educators and activists discussed in this blog are just a few in the every growing list of climate change activists.

Persian {Iranian} hip hop and
The Wikipedia page on Iranian hip hop provides a small glimpse at the growth and development of the genre, its cultural relevance, and the sociopolitical environment in which it has evolved. Starting off in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Iranian hip hop melds Persian music influences with global hip-hop styles in order to create a unique sound appealing both within and outside the borders of Iran to Iranian youth. One of the most important focuses is that this genre acts as a means for social commentary. Most Iranian hip-hop artists tend to engage themselves in pressing issues that include censorship and political oppression, personal challenges, and make statements through their music in a repressive environment. This makes the genre not only a trend in music but also a sort of resistance against societal expectations and government limitations.
Most artists overcome the barriers of censorship and the political situation in Iran through underground work, where they may publish their work anonymously and without being in the sights of the government. Such conditions create an underground culture of shared community among the artists and listeners alike, tied together by common experiences and searching for self-expression. The page also goes on to outline the deep impact of the Iranian diaspora in the growth of hip-hop within Iran. Emigrant artists have been at the forefront of expanding the genre while keeping up social media contact with those audiences, enabling the phenomenon to expand beyond national boundaries. But the Internet has allowed Iranian hip hop to spread nationally and even reach an international audience, allowing them to experiment more widely in the themes that local and global citizens can relate to.
On this page, it shows that Iranian hip hop is an artistic means of expression as well as a promoter of social change. It encompasses the depth of Iranian identity while voicing the youth and questioning the existing social order. Iranian hip hop is one of the major cultural movements that have trodden complex social landscapes with their compelling traditional and contemporary influences.

How is the world watching the 2024 US election?
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/how-is-the-world-watching-the-2024-us-election/
How is the world watching the 2024 US election?
No matter the outcome, the results of the 2024 United States presidential election are certain to have global impact. How are citizens and leaders in other parts of the world viewing this election? What’s at stake for their countries and regions?
This was the focus of “The 2024 US Presidential Election: The World is Watching,” a Starr Forum held earlier this month on the MIT campus.
The Starr Forum is a public event series hosted by MIT’s Center for International Studies (CIS), and focused on leading issues of global interest. The event was moderated by Evan Lieberman, director of CIS and the Total Professor of Political Science and Contemporary Africa.
Experts in African, Asian, European, and Latin American politics assembled to share ideas with one another and the audience.
Each offered informed commentary on their respective regions, situating their observations within several contexts including the countries’ style of government, residents’ perceptions of American democratic norms, and America’s stature in the eyes of those countries’ populations.
Perceptions of U.S. politics from across the globe
Katrina Burgess, professor of political economy at Tufts University and the director of the Henry J. Leir Institute of Migration and Human Security, sought to distinguish the multiple political identities of members of the Latin American diaspora in America and their perceptions of America’s relationship with their countries.
“American democracy is no longer perceived as a standard bearer,” Burgess said. “While members of these communities see advantages in aligning themselves with one of the presidential candidates because of positions on economic relations, immigration, and border security, others have deeply-held views on fossil fuels and increased access to sustainable energy solutions.”
Prerna Singh, Brown University’s Mahatma Gandhi Professor of Political Science and International Studies, spoke about India’s status as the world’s largest democracy and described a country moving away from democratic norms.
“Indian leaders don’t confer with the press,” she said. “Indian leaders don’t debate like Americans.”
The ethnically and linguistically diverse India, Singh noted, has elected several women to its highest government posts, while the United States has yet to elect one. She described a brand of “exclusionary nationalism” that threatened to move India away from democracy and toward something like authoritarian rule.
John Githongo, the Robert E. Wilhelm Fellow at CIS for 2024-25, shared his findings on African countries’ views of the 2024 election.
“America’s soft power infrastructure in Africa is crumbling,” said Githongo, a Kenyan native. “Chinese investment in Africa is up significantly and China is seen by many as an ideal political and economic partner.”
Youth-led protests in Kenya, Githongo noted, occurred in response to a failure of promised democratic reforms. He cautioned against a potential return to a pre-Cold War posture in Africa, noting that the Biden administration was the first in some time to attempt to reestablish economic and political ties with African countries.
Daniel Ziblatt, the Eaton Professor of Government at Harvard University and the director of the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, described shifting political winds in Europe that appear similar to increased right-wing extremism and a brand of populist agitation being observed in America.
“We see the rise of the radical, antidemocratic right in Europe and it looks like shifts we’ve observed in the U.S.,” he noted. “Trump supporters in Germany, Poland, and Hungary are increasingly vocal.”
Ziblatt acknowledged the divisions in the historical transatlantic relationship between Europe and America as symptoms of broader challenges. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, energy supply issues, and national security apparatuses dependent on American support may continue to cause political ripples, he added.
Does America still have global influence?
Following each of their presentations, the guest speakers engaged in a conversation, taking questions from the audience. There was agreement among panelists that there’s less investment globally in the outcome of the U.S. election than may have been observed in past elections.
Singh noted that, from the perspective of the Indian media, India has bigger fish to fry.
Panelists diverged, however, when asked about the rise of political polarization and its connection with behaviors observed in American circles.
“This trend is global,” Burgess asserted. “There’s no causal relationship between American phenomena and other countries’ perceptions.”
“I think they’re learning from each other,” Ziblatt countered when asked about extremist elements in America and Europe. “There’s power in saying outrageous things.”
Githongo asserted a kind of “trickle-down” was at work in some African countries.
“Countries with right-leaning governments see those inclinations make their way to organizations like evangelical Christians,” he said. “Their influence mirrors the rise of right-wing ideology in other African countries and in America.”
Singh likened the continued splintering of American audiences to India’s caste system.
“I think where caste comes in is with the Indian diaspora,” she said. “Indian-American business and tech leaders tend to hail from high castes.” These leaders, she said, have outsized influence in their American communities and in India.

Your Name
While watching "Your Name", I was immediately visually pleased by the animation's fine details and contemporary style (as you can see why the eggs GIF is my favorite frame). Since I've always enjoyed watching body-swapping cartoons growing up, it became one of my favorite assignments. Through the lens of Mitsuha and Taki's body-swapping adventure, the film subtly addresses themes of identity, memory, and the longing for connection in an increasingly fragmented world.
In Japan, "Your Name" relates particularly to the younger generation, grappling with societal expectations and the pressure to conform. Mitsuha's desire to escape her rural life in Itomori reflects Japanese youth who feel stifled by tradition and the rigidity of societal roles. This theme is universally relatable, as many young people worldwide experience a similar struggle between individual desires and societal expectations.
Globally, the film's exploration of natural disasters taps into collective anxieties about climate change and the fragility of human existence. The comet disaster that threatens Itomori serves as a reminder of our vulnerability in the face of nature's wrath, an issue that transcends borders and is ever more pressing in the wake of increasing environmental catastrophes. It also challenges the attitude of rugged individualism by suggesting that our lives are intricately linked and that our actions profoundly impact others, even across time and space.
Michel Foucault's "The History of Sexuality" can be seen as complementary to "Your Name." Foucault's exploration of how societal power dynamics shape individual identities parallels the film's depiction of Mitsuha and Taki's struggles with their own identities within the constraints of their respective environments. Both works leads us to question how external forces shape our understanding of ourselves and our relationships with others.
Overall, "Your Name" is a beautifully crafted film. It provides a reflection on the human condition, urging us to look beyond the surface and recognize the deeper connections that bind us all.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (Part 1)
Hello all! I was assigned to watch episodes 1,2,4, and 5 of Neon Genesis Evangelion. This anime was very interesting, especially with the topic we were talking about in class. Due to the module being about gender and masculinity, I can tell that while watching the show there are strong messages on how masculine a boy should act in society to be accepted. So, this is the analysis I have gathered for this anime:
The anime introduces us to Shinji Ikari, someone that's reluctant to get into the role of an Eva pilot who can defend humanity from mysterious entities known as Angels. The show addresses the pressure and expectations placed on youth in Japan, a reflection of societal norms where people, in this case, boys, often face immense pressure to conform and excel to be accepted into society. Globally, this resonates with the universal struggle of young people who have to grapple with identity and purpose in a world that gets increasingly more complex. In Episode 2, I saw the aftermath of Shinji’s confrontation with one of the Angels. The physical and emotional toll of combat he endured underscores the trauma that often comes with the duty and responsibility of protecting the world. This episode explored psychological stress and the need for mental health support. This is a critical issue both in Japan, where societal pressures can lead to significant mental health challenges, and globally, where mental health awareness is increasingly recognized as something essential for everyone. This is especially true with boys because it isn't always accepted by society for males to go to someone when facing mental health issues because it is seen as something, "less manly" which makes it difficult for males to be happy when they hold on to so many issues.
In episode 4 it dives deeper into Shinji’s psyche, showcasing his internal conflict and desire to escape from the burdens that were placed upon him. His feelings of isolation and desire to run away mirror the experiences of many individuals who are struggling with depression and anxiety. This episode does resonates with my own life, because I have also faced moments of self-doubt. The urge to withdraw from overwhelming situations highlights the universal nature of these experiences.
In the 5th Episode, we are introduced to Rei Ayanami, another Eva pilot, whose presence adds layers to the narrative. Her character embodies themes of alienation and identity, central issues in contemporary discussions about the human condition. The episode also touches on the ethical implications of scientific advancements. This topic is very relevant in both Japanese and global contexts as technology progresses, raising questions about humanity’s future. In general, the anime did a great job of portraying how males have to go through society believing the only way to make it is by being masculine and manly. It also explores other issues such as mental health and identity crises' that many people have globally.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (Part 1)
As someone interested in anime, I was familiar with Neon Genesis Evangelion beforehand due to the prominence of its female characters like Rei in pop culture. Additionally, one of my close friends considered this anime a favorite, so I had high expectations as I eagerly began watching the anime. Addressing a multitude of global issues like war, violence, and reactions to the "unknown," Neon Genesis Evangelion is set in a futuristic Japan as the plot follows fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari. With his father as the head project manager of a secret project called Nerv, Shinji is selected to be the "Fourth Children" to pilot a colossal mecha robot called "Evangelion." Due to the threat of unknown entities called Angels, humanity has resorted to the use and production of weapons of mass destruction like nuclear weapons and Evangelion.
Despite Shinji's youth and lack of maturity, humanity relies on him as one of the only individuals capable of piloting an Evangelion due to their selective and sporadic nature. Because piloting an Evangelion requires immense mental grit and resilience, pilots like Rei Ayanami suffer severe side effects that strain their physical and psychological health. Due to the urgency of the situation, as Angels are portrayed as almost indestructible, Shinji is thrust into his duty as a pilot despite his young age. Consequently, the adults around him often tell Shinji to "grow up" and fulfill his responsibilities now that he's a "big boy." Through his interactions with the other characters, Shinji is complicatedly characterized as he is faced with the difficult decision of prioritizing his well-being or his duties to the well-being of humanity. As the anime explores Shinji's character development, it provides compressive social commentary on masculinity, thus relating to R.W. Connell's book, Masculinities. With Connell arguing that masculinity is not static, she emphasizes that masculinity is dynamic in contemporary society as hegemonic masculinity is the culturally exalted form of masculinity that legitimizes the patriarchy. While Connell describes hegemonic masculinity as the normative ideal of masculinity, Neon Genesis Evangelion relates to Connell's argument in that Shinji is expected to conform to this idea of hegemonic masculinity as he is given a crucial role as an Evangelion pilot. Ultimately, the anime provides a unique perspective on masculinity and its strain on the youth like Shinji.

From the New World
"Shin Sekai Yori" (From the New World) dives into a dystopian future where a society with psychic abilities is tightly controlled to prevent chaos and destruction. This anime raises significant issues relevant to both Japan and the global community, primarily focusing on the ethical use of power, societal control, and the consequences of advanced technologies. Firstly, the anime's depiction of a society where individuals are strictly monitored and punished for non-conformity resonates deeply with Japan’s children. This reflects cultural concerns about social harmony and the intense pressure to conform. The critique of authoritarian control and the suppression of dissenting voices highlights anxieties about the potential loss of personal freedoms in a highly regulated society. The educational system's role in enforcing conformity parallels real concerns about the pressure on Japanese youth to succeed within rigid societal expectations. Globally, "Shin Sekai Yori" addresses ethical dilemmas surrounding the use of powerful technologies. The destructive potential of Cantus serves as a metaphor for nuclear power and other advanced technologies, prompting questions about humanity's ability to wield such power responsibly. The treatment of the Monster Rats, genetically modified humans, highlights global issues of oppression and discrimination, encouraging reflection on historical and contemporary instances of dehumanization and the moral responsibility to combat such injustices. Relating to my own life, "Shin Sekai Yori'' prompts reflection on the balance between security and freedom, a theme that resonated deeply during my time living in Singapore during the COVID-19 pandemic. The societal control and severe consequences for nonconformity in the anime echo the strict laws and regulations Singapore implemented to manage the crisis. These measures, while effective in maintaining public health and safety, also highlighted the intense pressure to adhere to societal norms and the power of the government to enforce punishment and other repercussions for non-compliance. The ethical questions about the use of advanced technologies and the treatment of marginalized groups in "Shin Sekai Yori" are particularly relevant, prompting me to consider my own beliefs and actions in a world where these issues are increasingly more real. My experience in Singapore during the pandemic allowed me to more fully comprehend the complexity of balancing individual freedoms with collective security, mirroring the anime's exploration of these themes. Connecting "Shin Sekai Yori" to other readings and viewings, themes of societal control and ethical use of technology parallel those in "Psycho-Pass." Both anime critique the potential for technology to control society and the loss of personal freedoms, raising similar questions about balancing security and liberty. The concept of genetically modified humans in "Shin Sekai Yori" also links to discussions about bioethics and genetic engineering, echoing concerns in contemporary debates about the ethical implications of such advancements.
