THE MESSAGE - TA-NEHISI COATES
THEY KNOW HE KNOWS AND HE'S TELLING EVERYONE
#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The renowned author of Between the World and Me journeys to three resonant sites of conflict to explore how the stories we tell—and the ones we don’t—shape our realities. “Ta-Nehisi Coates always writes with a purpose. . . . These pilgrimages, for him, help ground his powerful writing about race.”—Associated Press “Coates exhorts readers, including students, parents, educators, and journalists, to challenge conventional narratives that can be used to justify ethnic cleansing or camouflage racist policing. Brilliant and timely.”—Booklist (starred review) Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell’s classic “Politics and the English Language,”but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities. In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind.
Then he takes readers along with him to Columbia, South Carolina, where he reports on his own book’s banning, but also explores the larger backlash to the nation’s recent reckoning with history and the deeply rooted American mythology so visible in that city—a capital of the Confederacy with statues of segregationists looming over its public squares.
Finally, in the book’s longest section, Coates travels to Palestine, where he sees with devastating clarity how easily we are misled by nationalist narratives, and the tragedy that lies in the clash between the stories we tell and the reality of life on the ground.  Written at a dramatic moment in American and global life, this work from one of the country’s most important writers is about the urgent need to untangle ourselves from the destructive myths that shape our world—and our own souls—and embrace the liberating power of even the most difficult truths.

New Jersey Devils - October 2024 - Month in Review
The New Jersey Devils are 7-4-2 with sixteen points, first place in the Metropolitan Division.
Out of a total of twenty six points, we came out of the month with sixteen points, which isn't bad at all, but maybe isn't the exact start we were looking to have.
Roster Information: Curtis Lazar is "out indefinitely" and Santeri Hatakka is on the injured reserve.
T's Five Stars of the Month:
Nico Hischier
Stefan Noesen
Jonas Siegenthaler
Johnathan Kovacevic
Timo Meier
T's Thoughts, in no particular order:
Global Series was a helluva of a start to the season.
Seamus Casey, we can't wait for you to be a permanent fixture on our roster.
Siegs is motherfucking back. Put some respect on his name.
Nico Hischier is going for the Selke, the Hart, and the Rocket Richard.
Paul Cotter is an instant fan favorite.
The loss of Curtis Lazar is absolutely devastating, wishing him a speedy recovery, but take all the time you need in the world, king.
The Brett Pesce - Luke Hughes defensive pair is shaping up to be absolutely amazing. I'm so excited to see what they can do when they're playing the minutes we want them to play.
I am all about Chief Keefe. The decisions he makes on when to send out who, the way he deals with media, the way he talks to and about the players, the way he handles ref fuckery. I'm all on board the Chief Keefe Train.
Never take Timo Meier off of Nico Hischier's wing. A healthy Timo is going to take this league by storm.
Noesy on the first power play unit is a revelation.
Speaking of, our special teams are fucking killing it this first month. The power play is steadily getting better and closer and closer to elite status and our penalty kill is sexy as fuck.
Jack Hughes will always be Jack Hughes. The doubters are simply wrong.
Jesper Bratt remains Mister October.
I am concerned with a capital C about our goaltending. It seems to be costing us games when it should absolutely not be. I'm hoping for better goalie stats as the season moves along, but our goaltending is one of my biggest complaints.
Ondrej Palat, please, I want to root for you. Give me a reason to root for you.
Dougie Hamilton has been so sorely missed. I want to see more Dougie Bombs, please.
Our new guys have been fucking lights out amazing for us, especially Cotts and Kovy.
I love how Kovy is always willing to step up and defend his fellow teammate no matter what.
I go from being real high on Brenden Dillon to being like whatever on Brenden Dillon to being like curses! Brenden Dillon, so lets see how I feel as the season continues.
Keep Dawson Mercer on Nico Hischier's wing. The mini me is mini me-ing.
We gotta find consistency and we gotta find sixty minute efforts or as close to a sixty minute effort as possible.
We also gotta fix our defensive zone play over all. We don't exit the zone cleanly most of the time and our breakouts are real sloppy.
The vibes are fucking immaculate tho. It feels good, looks good, feels right, looks right.
Two shutouts already! Two loser points already! Two slutfests already!
Seeing some insane efforts by this team to claw back into games they have no business getting any points out of.
The less I see Kurtis MacDermid in the line up the better.
I am getting heavily concerned about whats happening with Nemo. If he's not going to get a real shot at a roster spot then he absolutely cannot be languishing in a press box. The kid deserves to play and he should be sent down to Utica.
Keeping a close eye on our fourth line. We have a top nine that I love, but we need to solidify that fourth line. Dowling's first outing with Tatar and Nate proved to be a great one for everyone involved, but let's see how they perform moving forward, seeing as BFF Curtis is out long term.
We absolutely need another top six winger as that is our missing piece, and I'm hoping my emotional support prospect, Arseni Gritsyuk will be the answer, but I don't know if we can wait that long.
Our lack of center depth and forward depth as a whole is also something that has caught my eye. Yeah, we have a long line of potential blue line replacements in case the worse happens, but it looks like our forward reserves are lacking.
I think we should have expected a bumpy start to begin with. A short pre-season, injuries on our blue line, new coach, new players, new system. It was going to take some time. Plus our schedule in October was fucking brutal. We had like what three practices the entire month? Given all of that, we're looking better as time goes on and we've seen some really strong games in a row starting from the Detroit game through the game against Vancouver last night.
see you at the end of November!

Book Review 56 – Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone
Tumblr media
I consider myself a pretty big fan of Gladstone’s, but until now I’d only ever touched his standalone works – I was previously a bit put off by the length of the Craft Sequence and so never actually tried it. So, thank you to the people who recommended I give it a try anyway! Despite being the first in a series, Three Parts Dead is a perfectly fine self-contained story and not relying on you reading the sequels to finish anything important. While it’s not the best thing of Gladstone’s I’ve read (Last Exit my beloved), it’s not the worst, either.
The book takes place in an industrial fantasy setting about a generation out from the apocalyptic, centuries-long war between the old gods and the ‘deathless kings’ – human sorcerers who had learned to master magic such that they could face them and tear the world apart in the crossfire. Tara, the hero, graduated from basically-Hogwarts entirely because there’s a binding preventing the school from doing bodily harm to its students – the next second they literally threw her out a window at 10,000 feet. The story follows her as she’s hired as a junior associate helping a world-famous lawyer/archmage as she’s hired by the church of Kas Everburning to investigate the sudden and mysterious death of their god. What follows are several hundred pages of convoluted scheming, legal proceedings, forensic accounting, and bloody magical duels and assassinations.
There are a few twists I genuinely didn’t see coming, the plot overall hangs together very well, and the pacing was just about perfect for the kind-of pulpy mystery/adventure story it was. Overall just a great time reading it.
That said, the setting’s probably the main thing to really sell people on this book. It’s just fun, and actually pretty damn original. The basic conceits are that a) magic is real, and b) so is capitalism. Kas Everburning is the beloved god and protector of the city, and also a highly leveraged legal entity loaning power across the globe whose death would catastrophically destabilize the global financial/metaphysical/political system. Mages can fly and raise zombies and enscroll people, but it’s all done in the idiom and with the vocabulary of contract law.
Beyond the basic conceit, Gladstone just clearly delights in layering weirdness on weirdness. Vitally, he does actually have a bit of restraint with the exposition – the book’s full of off-hand comments about different places and institutions that make you (me, anyway) incredibly curious about what the hell their deal is, but the actual explanations are restricted to what’s actually relevant to the plot and what the characters actually need to know. I still really want to know what’s up with King Clock or the Iskari or a half dozen other things, though. So, top-tier worldbuilding.
The themes are not exactly subtle, but I very appreciate that Gladstone lets them mostly remain as worldbuilding subtext and manages to make them feel like they emerge very naturally. I appreciate the slight restraint it takes to let the reader draw their own conclusions about the fact that the city’s police force is so empowered by strength and lack of need for doubt when on the clock that it’s literally addictive, or that one of the main antagonists is a brilliant older academic whose masterwork is a system where his star pupils (including a disproportionate number of attractive young women) are magically networked together to achieve incredible results he can take credit for while their lives and personalities are drained away to nothing. Being able to literalize the subtext a bit is half the fun of secondary wrld fantasy, after all.
Anyway, yes, very fun read. Four stars.

2023 book recs! (to read and to skip)
inspired by @deanmarywinchester's incredible rec list and general reading reviews!
RECOMMEND:
The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells: I love you autistic androids. forever and ever. I'm pretending the adaptation is not happening bc I don’t think the screen can do it justice so I’m simply enjoying every single page of these books before there’s inevitable show Discourse. I love the plots and the dialogue and just like murderbot I too wish I could be left alone to watch my shows.
Something That May Shock and Discredit You by Daniel Lavery: this book has a couple excerpts on here that make the rounds and piqued my interest and holy shit. if you are trans and queer and probably autistic. read this book as fast as you can. I felt seen in every word and also. Absolutely read to filth.
The Traitor Baru Cormorant (the masquerade series) by Seth Dickinson: I think I finally started this series because of my bestie @ofbowsandbooks (as is the case with so many things) but who's to say. either way I read this towards the beginning of the year and have not stopped thinking about it since. if you read it. please listen to so much (for) stardust by fob. I cannot recommend the specific kind of damage it does to you while rotating baru and tain hu in your mind. just. tailored to me in so many ways (fantasy story about imperialism and masks and lying and the terrible power of math) so I do admit bias there.
Settlers by J Sakai: If you can only read a book or two about understanding why colonialism/capitalism is at the root of all evil...read this book. It's at the top of my general list of political nonfic recs (next to capitalism & disability by marta russell and border & rule by Harsha Walia). I like to describe it as a leftist pov of us history that pulls apart some of the liberal/white "optimism" of People's History of the US.
They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us by Hanif Abdurraqib: I think this was also based on an excerpt I saw on here. I finally started getting into memoirs/essay collections this year and WOW. I mean, even if that genre isn't your thing, you should still read this book. It's just so so good, and utilizes unique topics (particularly music, I love his FOB essay) to explore both small personal moments and larger existential issues.
The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanon: This is considered a staple of anticolonial movements & education for a reason. Definitely helpful for understanding the global decolonial revolutions of the 1960s.
Decarcerating Disability by Liat Ben-Moshe: An incredible study of abolition from a disability lens. Clear (if a bit repetitive at times) but overall an engaging read that definitely brings a much needed addition to larger abolition texts.
Chain-Gang All Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah: I read this one after seeing @deanmarywinchester's posts about it. I read it in two days and it knocked me so hard on my ass. Especially as someone who was obsessed with the hunger games in middle/high school. Just. Wow. holy shit. we knew this already but abolish prisons police etc etc and also we have GOT to be done with tiktok. and alexas. and just being okay with casually reposting/consuming videos and images of violence against people of color and and and -
Exile & Pride by Eli Clare: transmasc disabled PNW crew rise up!!!! the trauma of growing up as all these things in a small rural town!!! I have very rarely felt so deeply seen and understood as when I was reading this book. It's heavy emotionally & topically, so warnings there. I did struggle a bit with it but only because of how deeply some of his story reflects my own.
Innocence & Corruption by Aiyana Goodfellow: This book and its author demand a fundamental shift from how we as a society view and treat children. If you are planning on having kids, have kids in your life, are a teacher, etc etc, cannot emphasize enough how important this book is to remind us that kids are people now, and they deserve autonomy, respect, and support.
Honorable Mentions:
he who drowned the world by shelley parker-chan : this was moved down a category only because the book before this one (she who became the sun) is literally just setup for this sneaky gut punch. So as a duology, could be stronger. this book as a standalone? Wow. There's some banger lines and concepts and characters in there. (Wang baoxiang. Just. Oh boy). Definitely fascinating in convo with baru cormorant, and I think a reason it's lower for me as well is because the lens of hwdtw is much more of an internal power turmoil than a study of imperalism, which I'm biased towards interest-wise. I read this purely because of @ash-and-starlight's incredible art, so please go check that out if you read the book - It is absolutely worth the read for their art.
the Black Jacobins by C L R James: I'm a french revolution bitch. it was a special interest of mine as a kid and got me invested in history. that said, we gotta talk about france's fuckery. which is to say, slavery/genocide/colonialism etc etc. This book is somewhat tricky to read at points, especially in keeping track of who's who, but a really incredible explanation of the beginning of Haiti's fight for independence. If you enjoy French or Caribbean history, anticolonial revolutions, and some of the nitty-gritty details of history textbooks, this is for you.
life under the jolly roger by Gabriel Kuhn: who here has seen black sails. (thee gay pirate show. Original edition.) strikes a good balance between an understanding of what pirates have/can/could represent, and absolutely clarity about their actual violence, legacy, and politics. Informative without being drawn in by the romanticism or dismissing its power completely.
the essential June Jordan: Politically relevant and also just lyrically beautiful poetry.
hell followed with us by Andrew Joseph White: trans horror fans w/ Christianity beef, this is for you. I am NOT a horror fan, but it was so well done and resonant with me that I stomached the gore for it and do absolutely recommend. if that’s your thing
DO NOT RECOMMEND:
the invisible life of addie larue by ve schwab: I love VE and am a bit of an apologist for her prose over plot bc her worldbuilding is always so cinematic to me, but this was such a frustrating waste of a brilliant concept. It was just...boring? Neither Addie nor Henry are particularly interesting (Henry's relatable, but again, not engaging as a character) and for someone who's been alive for a long time, I expected more unique flashbacks and worldbuilding. I expected the ten thousand doors of january, but this was not that, although I think at its soul it wanted to be.
the lies of locke lamora by scott lynch - Been meaning to read this forever since it was recommended a lot on here if you liked six of crows. I would say a similar setup (dickension fantasy) but that's about it. Characters aren't that likeable or clever, the action is slow, and I take issue with the ending.
unwieldy creatures by addie tsai - I so badly wanted this book to be good. It was not.
a day of fallen night by samantha shannon - It was fine, it's just such a long book I think time is better spent elsewhere, ya know?
provenance - second ann leckie book that i've finished unimpressed. despite murderbot being top of my list, this similar vibe of sci-fi did not strike me as one with such a unique clear voice. It just felt like a more inclusive version of many average space books.

Book Review: Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko
Tumblr media
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
First read this book two years ago but decided to give it a reread and thought I'd share my love for it with you all!
Overview
If you like....
Curses/promises/bargins
Mysterious parents
Half human protagonists
Important legacies
Self-sacrifice
Memory based powers
Beautiful culture
Found family
Ace rep!!!!!!!!!!
Unique magic systems
Magical politics
Corruption
Hidden history
Then this book is for you!
Blurb
'Tarisai has always longed for the warmth of a family. She was raised in isolation by a mysterious, often absent mother known only as The Lady.
'The Lady sends her to the capital of the global empire of Aritsar to compete with other children to be chosen as one of the Crown Prince's Council of Eleven. If she's picked, she'll be joined with the other Council members through the Ray, a bond deeper than blood. That closeness is irresistible to Tarisai, who has always wanted to belong somewhere. But The Lady has other ideas, including a magical wish that Tarisai is compelled to obey: kill the Crown Prince once she gains his trust.
'Tarisai won't stand by and become someone's pawn - but is she strong enough to choose a different path for herself?'
Overview
As you have probably guessed from the 5 stars, I have no complaints. Such a unique and vivid story, and a beautiful twist that was set up so well yet still managed to be surprising.
I also love how one of my least favourite tropes managed to be avoided by adding representation ( if you've read it you'll know what I mean.) It's proof that writers don't have to follow the same clichés to make an effective plot!
Also look at this map. I can't resist fantasy book maps. I never use them, but still feel disappointed in their absence.
Tumblr media
I love it
First Line
'I shouldn't have been surprised that faries exist.'
'Only one thing is more powerful than a wish, and that is a purpose'

Comics Review: 'Black Water Lilies'
Black Water Lilies by Fred Duval, Didier Cassegrain, Edward Gauvin
Tumblr media
coming of age
detective
European comics
romance
My Rating: 3 of 5 stars
For all the mystique and grandiosity embedded in the emotional architecture of dead artists, one finds the perseverance of capitalism and the hunger of opportunistic creatures of culture are the last prevailing architects of bygone aesthetics. As such, the problem, as evidenced in BLACK WATER LILIES, rests as much with pinpointing a murderer in a small community in northern France as it does with unraveling several decades of charismatic secretiveness.
This book is funny, clever, and confusing, and that's probably the point. BLACK WATER LILIES nestles comfortably into Giverny, France, as its sole backdrop, within which flocks and founders an array of characters whose motives spin into and out of control whereupon a murder or two (or three) happen upon the populace. Giverny is known globally for having housed painter Claude Monet for nearly four decades. However, these days, the tourist attraction acts as a kind of living museum for transient spectators to ogle and photograph.
Giverny is beautiful, yes, but what about the people who live there? What about the villagers who feel trapped? What about the lives left unfulfilled? What about the stunted happiness wrought from cheap water-lily-painting contests and secondary markets for smuggled art? What about the first loves? Romances of error? Aged rivalries?
What about those who die in this awkwardly preserved garden of the impossible?
Police inspector Laurenç Sérénac arrives to investigate a murder, but quickly finds himself ensnared in a peculiar but not inescapable network of uncertainties. Did a wealthy man die from someone else's jealousy? From his own petty art obsessions? From the reflexive pain of someone else's greed? The inspector's affection for a local schoolteacher might blind him to the truth, and that schoolteacher's tendency to fall in love with the idea of falling in love might blind her to the truth.
BLACK WATER LILIES integrates several scenes, locations, and points of view into a larger, mostly coherent narrative. The nature of many mystery tales is that very little makes sense until the final chapter. To wit, Cassegrain's art helps fulfill this endeavor. Expressive personalities pop on every page, exposing readers to the tilted head or wrinkling brow of characters who may (or may not) mean more than one may first intuit. Colorful and immersive background art frames much of the book's drama, as knotty old trees, weedy riverbanks, and overgrown building facades grant a shivering, pastoral allure to each suspicion, each denial, and each bated breath.
This is probably not an ideal comic book for readers more interested in contemporary fare, or whose tastes simply lean toward decidedly linear and more urbane storytelling methods. BLACK WATER LILIES sets one upon a long and twisting road, with long speeches and frequent close-ups. One might debate whether a mystery story can truly be enjoyed more than once, given the thrill of discovery, but thankfully, Cassegrain's art lends credulous detail and integrity to an otherwise fun but casual whodunnit.
