Coming from someone neither yt nor liberal here's my take: This isn't about frivolous spending at all. It is as the first sentence implies about the inanity of the argument that critiques about things like cosmetics aren't valid because ~some women find it fun and empowering~. What's white liberal feminism is *exactly* that: the idea that one's personal enjoyment is uniquely morally validating in and of itself to the point that critique of that pleasure and its wider contexts are seen as an attack or just flat out invalid. And for as much as people don't like the comparisons, the reason OP is relating makeup to alcohol, tobacco etc is because the personal enjoyment that *anyone* gets out of it is largely manufactured by the same industry so like...are you actually enjoying it or have you been artificially pressured towards and rewarded for partaking in it? I would move away from the distracting comparison to typical addictions (though I do think there are industrial parallels and expand this into things like media consumption and fast fashion as @glassglitter mentioned (their comment is in the notes and the issue I have with it is 'why didn't OP also include x y z ? Like why assume that OP *woudln't* just bc they didn't write an essay from jump? The tumblrina tendency to assume all omission is willful disagreement instead of like, this is a platform where ppl can make short, casual posts is so annoying). By and large ppl are reticent to examine *why* they enjoy things especially when it comes to consumptive habits and that is Pretty Bad in a capitalist society where consumption to the point of self damage and manufactured consent are core tenets. Tl:dr as much as I a) think skincare needs to be 50% teased out between necessary self-care and cosmetics industry bullshit, and b) also believe people should be able to do whatever they want with their bodies, I also believe it would not be ~empowering~ to have a beat face nor would it be a relief to get plastic surgery *if not for forms of appearance based oppression* existing first. And that's what the discussion is about. Because the 'enjoyment' is manufactured. Which means it shouldn't be used to invalidate critiques about these industries.

the logic that feminist critiques of the cosmetics industry are invalid because some women derive joy out of doing their makeup/skincare or getting plastic surgery is so funny. the tobacco industry isn’t bad because smoking makes some people feel good. it’s okay to gamble your savings away if it makes you happy. don’t let anyone criticize your drinking habits if you like getting drunk every day. etc

First attempts at something different. As you all know I love #experimenting with different #materials and for the last few months I’ve really been wanting to@play with #sand. #coloredsand in particular. To be honest, colored sand has kinda held my interest since my college hosted a group of Buddhist monks to craft a #mandala for a week (I do have pics much, much further down). But, for some reason, sand is freakin expensive for the amount you get!!!🤯 I had found a couple at @dollartree but that selection was limited. Recently I found @justartifacts which had great selection packs of colors for a really good price (about $12 for 10colors, a great price). I ended up getting most of them [as you can see from the last pic🤫]. Yesterday was another fun day working at @summercottageantiques and visiting with all of our customers. My space got a lot of love with the shifting of things from here to there, creating fun vignettes and putting out lots of new items, like these #vintage #balusters which are great for candlesticks and some sweet #glassglitter mini #raster baskets.
