Feats for Gishing

Pathfinder's core combat system is incredibly cruel to the idea of a character wielding a weapon in one hand and magic in another, or even just one-handed wielding in general- two-handed weapons and specializing in either magic or weapons are just better. I think that's a shame, because the image of pairing a sword with magic is just cool!

The Magus and Swashbuckler are attempts to enable this in their own way, and I think they do a decent job! But part of what I love about Pathfinder is the versatility of it, and combat feats play a big part. Here's a few feats that enable that (and let you trade a weapon enhancement for a feat in the case of swashbuckler!)

Ignition Blade Combat Feat Prerequisites: Ability to cast 2nd level spells After making a successful attack roll with a light or one-handed weapon, if you have a free hand, you may empower that attack as an immediate action. If you do, it deals an additional 1d6 fire damage. This damage stacks with weapon enchantments.

Ignition Blade, Greater Combat Feat Prerequisites: Ability to cast 3rd level spells, Ignition Blade After making a successful attack roll with a light or one-handed weapon, if you have a free hand, you may expend a spell slot as an immediate action. If you do, that attack deals an additional 2d6 fire damage, plus 1d6 more fire damage for each level of spell you expended. This damage stacks with weapon enchantments but does not stack with damage from Ignition Blade.

Magical Marksman Combat Feat Prerequisites: Int 13 You are trained in the skill of targeting with magical effects. You get a +2 precision bonus to ranged attack rolls made as part of a spell.

Duelist’s Grace Combat Feat Prerequisites: Dex 13, Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus (Rapier) You may add your dexterity modifier instead of your strength modifier to damage rolls when wielding a rapier in one hand and keeping the other either free or wielding a buckler.

Ka'zalii would ascend with good intentions, as the gods always do. He'd focus on liberation and freedom, but then it'd also bleed into zealotry and control. So yeah, his people would be free of Vlaakith, but they'd be under whoever he approved of and he wouldn't be impartial. The corrupting power of divinity is very fun to think about. There is of course the one where he never left his creche, survived and got the idealism beaten out of him. Became as loyal to Vlaakith as any other. In that one, you'd encounter him in the knights of the shield hideout, a gish seeking favour from his queen, ascension even. There's one less fleshed out one where he never joins the Sha'sal Khou and carries on pirating and raiding. A very decadent version of him I think.

Laura Jack described how everyone has struggles that they often hide from public view. Make a reusable, portable sign (such as a chalkboard, whiteboard, or letter board) that says “I am struggling with __” OR “The truth is, I feel __” and get someone to fill in the blank with something that has been challenging them. Take a photo of them holding the sign and posing in the most happy, beautiful, carefree pose they can. Post your image on Instagram, tagging #GISH and @laurajackcoaching. Make sure you have their permission to post their photo! Laura would love for people to read pages 7-9 from the Compassion Code Starter Guide before attempting the challenge so they can be kind and thoughtful about their approach.

Notes on a Duo Act 1/Act 2 Playthrough

Continuing from Solo Notes and More Solo Notes, originally inspired by @trappedinafantasy37.

In a previous post I mentioned that this is my swords bard's 14th go-round in Faerun, but I'm not sure I've said why: I imagine this to be a Groundhog Day-like purgatory, where he's condemned for various sins to do the same thing over and over again until he gets it right. For various metagame and non-Faerunian-lore reasons, it works really well as his story, and it's a handy excuse to RP when doing umpteen-dozen replays.

Anyway, by his tenth day of infection, Cannor was done with trying to solve this problem alone, so he did what any good grove-raiding lonely swords bard would do: seek out the killer drow princess where she said she'd be. Before that, though, there were things to prepare—like hitting Level 6 for good gear—and metagame-dancing to do in order to get there properly. Day-by-day wall-of-text breakdown and screencap-dump below the cut:

Day 10: A long day to start things off. Cannor traded a bit wit Derryth before warping to check on Shadowheart, who said she'd wait by the goblin-camp mountain pass entrance. He dealt with one last goblin (the looter-trader, who died thinking he could take on the Enemy of Justice bard) and went to the pass, but Shadowheart was gone (just like a Sharran to stand someone up, right?). So Cannor warped to the bridge-area pass entrance and kept out of sight while Lae'zel materialized and approached Voss and his gang. With Lae'zel occupied there, she wouldn't show up at the Trielta Crags warp point, so Cannor warped back to the goblin camp pass entrance and moved on from there.

That triggered the force-camp scene with Raphael, but despite his 10 INT Cannor's no fool—he knew a full day hadn't passed already—so the bard zapped Raphael with Ray of Fire to make him go away. Then he "camped" to make the devil-magic go away too, and when that was done the Astral Prism mysteriously materialized among his effects. Now in the crags area, Cannor traded with Esther (remaining non-committal to her egg deal) and then proceeded to the monastery creche. He saw the gith abusing halflings there, but couldn't really take them on solo, so he sneaked in the back door, where an utterly shocked gish told him to see the kith'rak.

Cannor was watched closely while doing business with the gith trader (the Dex gloves are an essential item for his build), but he foiled their paranoia by warping to camp and re-speccing with Withers (where I routinely switch his +1 ability from DEX to CON now that the gloves bump DEX, so he's now DEX 18 CON 16). But he's not completely geared/leveled up, so he hit Level 6 after kettling the kobolds to get Sleather+1 from the Zhent trader. Incomplete gear-up plus loneliness also meant prematurely proceeding to Act 2. He warped to Grymforge, picked up some torches, and took the elevator to the Shadow-Cursed Lands.

There, he triggered the Shadows vs Harpers battle and took a hit before going invisible to survive. The Harpers weren't so lucky, so he looted their soon-to-be-cursed bodies and fled to Last Light Inn. There, some chode named Marcus lied to help him get inside, then Cannor told THE Jaheira everything so she'd be less of a middle-aged crank (which, fair—he can relate—but Harpers always make his eyes roll). By now obscenely flush with cash, Cannor completed his gear-up with Talli (Cloak of Protection, various consumables) and began assembling what he hoped would be a flattering welcome/care package for the drow (Yuan-Ti scale and a big shield to go with the Wondrous Gloves and Nere's boots).

After a brief break at camp (from which Barcus had left to remain at Last Light), Cannor returned to the inn entrance to make his patented no-pixie-mad-dash to Moonrise Towers and rescue the princess. This he duly did (details described elsewhere before, but man this never ever gets old), with the only difference being Sazza was there! SHE CANNOT BE CAGED. So in addition to freeing the Purple Murder Kitten, Cannor also released the Scarlet Mini-Punker to go do her thing, whatever and wherever that might be. Stay classy, Sazza. So, it was time to impress Minthara by 1) showing up to rescue her ("I didn't think anyone would come for me"), 2) bullying his way out of Moonrise like a fucking boss ("You really do have a way with words"), 3) and allowing her to recover at his camp while perusing a generous stash of weapons and armor with her name on them.

Only four days after they hooked up at a party, drunk on horrible but seemingly necessary deeds, these crazy midlife-crisis-wrecks were back together. And she even seems to like him a bit, which is good and necessary, considering what had to come next—something he knew she wouldn't like—the dreaded Silence Gambit. It's a helluva thing to make a penitent return to the scene of their crimes, so while he didn't force her back to the Grove, there were still some things undone in the Wilderness for which he needed her help, so to the Myconid Colony they went. The blow was softened a bit by reorganizing all the gear and sharing their still-upwards-of-10k pile of gold before camping in the Selunite outpost for an uneventful night.

Day 10 was a long one, so I'll stop there and continue with the Act 1 Duo-Mayhem Diary another time. Thanks for the indulgence. Have a screencap-dump!

What's the most random tv show/media you've ever written fanfic for? I had a phase years ago when I was younger where I was into the Little House on the Prairie tv show, and while I didn't consider it "fanfic" at the time, I liked writing my own "episodes" for it and a few other shows I was into at the time (they were very general, PG rated stories). I knew they were obscure shows and no one would read them, but to this day when I get a fanfic idea, it won't leave me alone until I write it:P

heck... i mean, technically i've really only written fic for spn. i never wrote fanfic for other media before, which is weird considering how old i was when i started lol :'D

but i have written some crossover fics with a couple other things...

In Jeopardy! is the last installment I wrote for the Everything is Subtext 'verse, even though someday maybe there'll be more. Canon case fic-ish, Cas goes on Jeopardy and wins a lot of money :') But... the Jeopardy stuff is all verified authentic to how it works in our universe too (or did when i was on the show back in 2010 lol)

Around the World in 24 Days is the last installment I wrote for the Tumblr Anonymous 'verse, again even if I might someday write more for it. AU Cas, Dean, and friends participate in an around the world race a la the show The Amazing Race. Written during a time when so many reality competition shows were getting fanfic treatment, and I was disappointed nobody else would write this one for me :'D (includes the tag "blatant misuse of an IKEA" lol)

Until I Know This Sure Uncertainty, I'll Entertain The Offered Fallacy 6 way body swap! Canon case fic, but also very very loosely inspired by the Comedy of Errors. but SIX WAY BODY SWAP!

Cakepocalypse! canon case fic (yes REALLY I SWEAR) that's also a baker Dean/tv producer Cas au (this will make sense as you read it, because it's also 13.23 coda fic...). Essentially a Nailed It! au.

Baby X-File written for GISH 2022, Item 4: “Fanfic through the Ages”: Write a special crossover fanfic of a character from a 1990s show, book, or video game and a character from a 2000s show, book, or game meeting in a different 2010s universe. I sent TFW to meet Mulder and Scully. :'D

one working part 15.19/15.20 fix it fic, told like It's A Wonderful Life.

I can't help thinking there's more, but I think that's enough to go on for now lol.

I mean, all of these are still firmly spn/destiel fic because really that's all the fic I've ever written. Before fic, I only wrote original fiction. Until I was in my late 30's. Which again, apparently isn't the usual fic author trajectory of "i used to write stories based on my childhood cartoons" or whatever. I've been writing since I was a kid, sure, but I just... never was inspired to write fanfic of anything until Dean and Cas forced my hand :')
