during her many years serving the second army, aisling has made countless weapons for ravka. she’s learned not to question their purpose – or their success, knowing full well the magnitude of her abilities. a request for a cage didn’t strike her as odd, even coming from the darkling herself. she tells aisling it’s meant to keep a terrifying beast trapped – and so the durast slaves her nights away, building and fortifying, telling herself all of this bloodshed is for the sake of her country.

after finishing the cage, she vows never to look at it again, no differently from her other creations for the crown. she keeps her distance from the room containing it – until an order comes for her to bring food to the prisoner. only heartrenders are allowed inside. it always struck aisling as odd. after all, their summoning did not work on animals – and the tray she carries has a plate and a glass, not a bowl as aisling expected.

nothing could have prepared her to find a girl inside her cage.

she does not speak to aisling, and the durast realizes she can’t find her own voice either. she’s out as quickly as she came in, slipping the tray inside with shaking hands.

the second time she enters that room, it’s of her own volition. unable to forget the image of someone so small trapped in her fortified prison, aisling spends the following hours lying awake – knowing she cannot break the girl out and risk the darkling’s fury ( surely it’s all for a grand plan meant to help grisha ), the least she can do is help her feel a little more humane. she asks genya for a change of clothes and sells the guards a white lie on how this is a request from the darkling as well; they would never dare question their commander.

while aisling is surprised the girl is finally speaking, the aggressive tone in her voice is every bit expected. her eyes widen at the blunt accusation, head shaking immediately. “ oh, of course not. i wouldn’t dare fight you – that sounds like a very poor match up. ” her mouth runs a little too long, too honest as usual, before aisling realizes her words could be taken the wrong way. “ for myself, i mean. i’m not a fighter. ” she taps the gray embroidery on her kefta, wondering if the other will understand its meaning.

“ i, um – i brought you some fresh clothes. ” aisling opens the latch meant for food and slips the shirt and trousers inside. “ i’m sorry, i don’t know your size. but my friend has quite an eye for this type of thing. ”
