3Z Ginpachi Sensei: Funky Monkey Teachers - Lecture 3 “Playing Doctor as adults is not the same as playing Doctor as children”  - Chapter 3

This is the third chapter of lecture 3 titled "Playing Doctor as adults is not the same as playing Doctor as children"

Disclaimers:

3) I do not own anything related to the Gintama franchise. This is a fan translation and I do not gain financial profit from it.

4) Mistakes and mistranslations might happen a lot. I am learning japanese for barely two years now. I try to translate the japanese text into a logical english structure, but that is hard with my limited knowledge.

The location changed.

After the measurements and medical examinations in the gymnasium were over, it was time for chest X-rays in a bus parked near the gymnasium.

The bus was a special bus equipped for this purpose. The students had to hug the machine which was adjusted to chest level.

They had to inhale and hold their breath for a few seconds. During that time, Ginpachi and Tsukuyo, who were behind the partition door, operated the machine and took pictures.

“Oi, is it safe to use such a machine without any training?” Tsukuyo said with a worried look as expected, but Ginpachi nodded. "It'll be fine."

"Look at this machine. The manufacturer's name is Bantomitakanamu Games."

"A toy!? Is this a toy!?" Tsukuyo’s eyes widened.

I don't know about the specifics, but I read the instruction manual (Ginpachi emphasizes the word instruction manual in the japanese original) and it seems pretty easy. It says you don't need any special knowledge to use it," Ginpachi said, waving the manual in the air. That’s the reason there were no specialist technicians in the car, in other words, is probably because the machine was so easy to operate.

So, the photographing began.

Students took turns getting in and standing in front of the machine. Ginpachi gave instructions from the other side of the partition, "Yes, take a breath. Yes, stop. Yes, that's fine."

He wasn’t sure if it was a toy or a medical device, but the machine itself seemed to be working properly. The monitor in front of Ginpachi clearly showed the inside of a chest - ribs, lungs, and so on.

The picture-taking went very smoothly. Until, however, it was 3Z's turn.

"Pleased to meet you,” Sogo Okita stood in front of the machine.

Feeling prepared for this guy first, Ginpachi gave him the instructions.

“Yes, well, take a breath…..Yes, stop. Yes, fine."

On the monitor, the inside of Okita's chest was clearly shown. Lungs, ribs, and the words ‘Hijikata die’ – No, no, no! What is this text message!

As Ginpachi was perplexed, Tsukuyo whispered to him. "Ginpachi, it seems that this machine takes pictures of everything inside of your chest.”

"No, I mean, it’s not just your lungs, it's also picking up your heart's voice inside your chest!”

After Okita, Hijikata stood in front of the machine.

So, when Ginpachi took a picture, this was displayed on the monitor:

"You're the one who should die, Sougo."

– No, you’re not supposed to display that! I mean, why does it say, "You're the one" as if you were talking to Okita just now!

Next in line was Kondo.

“It is weird, isn't it? Why is it like a conversation?”

– No, you're insane! Why is it that you can hear my heart's tsukkomi! No no no, something is wrong with this machine. It had been working fine until then, but now it suddenly went haywire. Anyway, after this, the monitor continued to display the message on the lungs and ribs.

Yamazaki was like this:

“Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tamakin Anpan Tama-san Anpan Tama-san”

Then, Tsukuyo whispered to him.

"Oh my God.........”

“What is it?”

“One of the "Tama-san" is "Tama-kin" ......" (*author's note, let's look for it too)

“No, I don't care! How did you figure that out?!”

And after Zaki, it was Sacchan.

Then, Tsukuyo said again:

"Oh my God….."

“What is it this time?”

“One Character in ‘Gin’ says ‘pig’.” (*Author's note: Let's look for it, too.)

“You know exactly what you're talking about! And the author's note is annoying!"

And after Sacchan, it was Catherine. This is the stuff that showed up:

Just when Ginpachi was getting tired of giving the tsukkomi, Kagura got on the bus.Kagura's hair was standing up again.

“I've already measured your height, so you don't have to make your head look like TOSHI..” Kagura looked surprised when Ginpachi said that.

"Eh, because this bus... isn't it a bus for X-exclusive photography?"

–No, X, it’s not that X!

Feeling weak, Ginpachi interfered.

–And don't give me that smug look! What's with the "I told you so" look!

"Isn't that the bus for the X-Specialty shoot?"

– You're being a pain in the ass! I can hear you!

"Isn't this the bus for the X-rated shoot?"

Third time!? What, do I have to say, "Good!" to make it end?  What a pain in the ass!

Then, Tsukuyo said, crossing her hands in the shape of an X

“For the one who persists too much, it’s not an X, it’s an X.” (she says ‘batsu’ which refers to the x-mark over the wrong answer in a test)

"Good!", Ginpachi said without thinking.

some gintama fics from my ao3 bookmarks that i would like to yell about. a fair amount of these are oneshots that i'm very fond of, but every now and then a multi-chapter might pop up. one or two are hosted on ffnet! mostly gen, with some character pairings! they vary ahaha

i confess that my deepest affections lie often with yorozuya and shoka sonjuku/joui4 fics, with ventures into otose and her extended family, and that i may love gintoki too much, so my fic recs lean in that direction!

the familiar and the great unknown by guycecil — [takagin, zuragin, sakagin, sakataka] wkkwidioqodjkajda i was delivered many heartbroken emotions by this joui4 era fic. the entire series aches, i love this author so much, but this particular gin-centric installation gives me especially melancholic emotions.

Afterlife is a country you don't need a visa for by MilwaukeeMeg — [gen] an alternate universe where shinpachi and kagura die before they ever meet gintoki (once again gintoki gets to see ghosts,,) BUT that certainly won't stop them from becoming beloved yorozuya fam <3

The 'Bottle' in 'Spin the Bottle' Is Surely A Euphemism For Alcohol by StarryDustandFluffyStuff — [zurataka, zuragin, sakagin, sakataka, sakazura] the plot is "sakamoto kisses anyone he wants" and it's an absolutely excellent plot, very very good, i support sakamoto's endeavours wholeheartedly. to quote the tags, silly and fun, with a dash of angst!! i very much like the sakamoto voice too!

you/him by ijustwanttodestroy — [takagin] as the tags say, there is Angst, there is Romance, there is Character Study (my goodness there is character study) the way the words flow in this makes me press my hands to my face and gasp. second person pov that makes me cry,,,

the lonely thief by Official_Biscuit_Moron — [gen] okay okay okay this is wonderful and wonderful and introspective and catherine-centric (stinky cat woman <3) biscuit's writing is soft and subtle and evocative, i never felt quite so deeply for catherine until This, there is so much love in the writing!!! aaaaghg gh

It's a Hard Knock Life by Linderosse — [gen] joui3,,, babies,,, modern au,,, some fluff some angst some emotional hurt and comfort, i really really like the characterisation of their childhood selves (like? a very strong sense of voice?) and the prose! the prose is so gentle, the atmosphere like? a sweet vague wash of emotion? (hm i'm sorry for being so inconcise with my descriptions and also my recommendations in general ahaha) this is part of a series, and the next part of the series is equally wonderful and perhaps delivers even more heartache (tempered with fluff,,)

they say the devil you know is better than the one you don't, but sometimes both devils are you and what are you supposed to do then, huh? by parangari — [gen] this one is kagura-centric oh Frick i don't know what else to say about this but? kagura stream of consciousness?? second person pov??? every word exudes emotion and the kagura voice rattles in my bones and the gintoki and the shinpachi you glimpse through kagura's voice are so very very Them i guess what i mean is aah i think it's superbly in-character!!!

When in Doubt, Shout by InfiniteInMystery — [sakagin, hijigin, hm, but mostly, Adventure, i think] in-progress multi-chapter gintama skyrim au!! there was a dragon at the start and it was cool, and i just think it is very neat! also the relationship between otose and gintoki in this is very sweet,,

ghost— by kapteeni — [gen] a series technically not a fic but series most certainly count too and this one made me cry and left an ache in my chest (an important criteria) worldbuilding is amazing and so is characterisation and relationships and everything, i remember reading this all in one go and afterwards i had lost my sense of self and was floating in a void of strange awe and euphoria and wistful wistful emotions <3 <3 <3 kapteeni wrenched my soul out of my body and i was grateful beyond words

Tiger Mom by gettinyinggywithit — [gen] a little hint of gintsu, but mostly, it is about tsukuyo learning to be gentle when it was not what she was taught, and the prose is? smooth?? silk smooth? smooth like still water???

You and me and the Devil makes three by saveusmilkboy — [gen] this joui war fic buried itself into my soul it has nine chapters on ao3 and for the first few chapters the formatting has the paragraphs squashed together, i read it first on fanfiction.net and it is perhaps the single one first person pov oc fic that i have adored, i love mikkun, and more than that, i think how the author delves into the feeling of a war? it feels so grounded,, and outsider pov on the joui!! so much character building going on!! gintoki says cool speeches! zura sings "ma'am i'd like to fuck"!

Cradle Song by iphido — [ayano/tatsugoro, gen] cw: miscarriage. gorgeously written thoughtful piece about otose and motherhood. there is so much care in the writing, and iphido writes relationships that exude so much love, my goodness

If Love is in the Air, it's Time You Started Thinking About Getting an Air Conditioner — by Official_Biscuit_Moron — [kintoki/gintoki] ahahahaha biscuit is immensely talented at writing things that exude the ridiculous shenanigans of gintama daily life and this is Just One Of Them i will not say anything else except please read this kintoki goes through many ordeals and the dialogue is impeccably funny and sacchan is there!!!!!

What to Do About Tomorrow by Shirokokuro — [gen] shirokokuro's shoyo&gintoki centric content reaches right into my ribcage and wraps tenderly around my heart, it brings me SO much delight, so much affection, i love shiro's writing so much, vivid wonderful prose, settings and descriptions that make me feel like i am under sunlight and photosynthesising, dialogue and scenes that flow so smoothly and organically, i have So many words. now i will write words about the fic itself: wtdat is the multi-chapter shoyo-gin timeloop fic that my heart has always yearned for, aghgggh. the epitome of found family content, and you know what while i am at it, i would like to usher to the front the rest of shiro's gintama works, Alpenglow and An Armful of Azaleas because they are sweet and lovely and i love them

Hi Aero, I really need your advice. Have you ever faced stalkers? Not the admirer type like Kondo, but threatening ones like ex partners or jealous acquaintances who keep harassing you online. If so, how do you deal with the situation. If not, how will you deal with it?

Oh, for sure! I’ll put the answer below the cut!

I’ve dealt with a lot of different kinds of people and I don’t know your situation, so I can’t hone in on what you need. Threatening ex or jealous acquaintance are two totally different things. 

1. People stalk me online quite a bit. There’s a tumblr user that keeps tabs on me and monitors what I do, as described in this post, but she’s just a harmless GinTsu shipper, so she’s nothing to worry about. For people like that, I just ignore them and let them get it out of their system. I think it’d be different if we’d been friends and she went insane or something, but since we’ve never spoken and I don’t think she has the capacity to speak to anyone rationally, then what do I have to worry about? She doesn’t know me at all, so her opinion is meaningless. So, if you’re dealing with this kind of situation, just ignore the person. Chances are, they’re super unhappy in their personal life and are using their hate for others as an outlet. It’s not worth worrying about and they’ll eventually find someone else to hate on. There’s also a good chance that they’re acting this way because they’re jealous of you and want to put you down as much as possible so that you’re closer to their lower level. Don’t let people do that, just ignore them. Spend your time and energy on things that matter!

2. Exes are more difficult to deal with, especially if you see them often. The best thing I can recommend to you is to get as many people involved as possible. It might feel wrong to “burden” others with your problems, but not only will you be making yourself safer by including more people, but you’ll also be discouraging your ex at the same time. Tell everyone. For example, if you’re at a store and you see your ex, tell the manager of the store, tell the cashier, find head of security if the store has one and let them know. You’re not burdening anyone by doing so and you’re keeping yourself safe at the same time. Get a restraining order if it gets bad enough, pull out your phone and record the person, make your ex feel uncomfortable for stalking you. If you’re in your apartment and you see your ex outside, straight up call the police and always take pictures to document everything. To get any legal action taken, you generally have to have proof and the more proof you can provide, the better off you’ll be.

3. If the harassment is only online, you can either delete your accounts and start fresh or ignore them. Strictly online harassment is easier to deal with than real life harassment because there are more steps you can take to get rid of it. Blocking people, blacklisting them, or just stepping away from your computer and going outside makes big differences. Online harassment is a big deal, don’t get me wrong, it’s also just easier to ignore. Being online isn’t a lifestyle, it should just be a pastime or hobby. If being online doesn’t make you happy and you’ve got bad vibes with some people, then just leave. You’ll be better off. I’m rarely on here anymore since I’m off enjoying the fandom based on my books and writing and traveling and university classes etc etc etc and scrolling through tumblr should just be a small time killer/hobby, not something that you should be sinking a ton of time into. I mean, if that’s what you want to do, there’s nothing wrong with that at all! Tumblr and other social media sites just aren’t necessarily good for cultivating healthy environments, especially if you’re part of any fandoms. Basically what I’m saying is that if you’re not happy being on online formats, then step away and try something different! 

4. There’s also a kind of harassment that’s backhanded. Like you can ignore someone because you don’t feel good about them, so you mind your own business and keep to yourself, but they keep coming back to you. This has happened to me and it was one of those things where sometimes people just harass you because they want to and then they act like it’s your fault if you get annoyed with them. I had someone reappear multiple times despite me never doing anything to interact with them because they gave me bad vibes and then they sent their friend to harass me for them and then made it out like they were the victim. It was really dumb and all I can encourage you to do is stick up for yourself. If someone just won’t leave you alone no matter how well you blacklist them and avoid them because you don’t personally care for them, don’t be afraid to just fucking tell them. They’ll play victim and act like they’re being attacked, but goodness, just keep yourself safe. You don’t want them in your life anyway, so tell them to leave you the fuck alone and be done with it. That sounds so harsh and I hate when I have to do that, but sometimes there are just certain kinds of people that you have to be super blunt and “offend” so they can get what they want and act all attacked. The person who did that to me has apparently done it to other people and after it happened that person’s own friends heard about it and came to me to apologize telling me that person does that kind of guilt tripping stuff a lot. I’m just glad to be done with the situation and so I’m putting this forward in case this might help you. Don’t let people gang up on you and if they play victim, let them. It’s what they want to do anyway, so let them do their thing and you just go off and do what you enjoy without them! 

That’s about all I can help you with, I think. Unless you give me something more specific, this is all I have for you. I’m well versed at dealing with unhinged people and considering how such people have no affect on me, I think I’m a good person to learn from in this respect.

This is the first chapter of lecture 3 titled "Playing Doctor as adults is not the same as playing Doctor as children"

There was a man who could only be seen as a suspicious person. 

He had long, carelessly grown hair and he was wearing some kind of pointedly designed sunglasses.

Such a man was standing under a tree planted behind the gym.

No, he wasn't just standing there, he was constantly reaching for a certain branch.

When looking at the branch, you could see that there was a white piece of cloth stuck to it and he was reaching for it. The triangular white cloth did not look like pants at all. 

―but at this point of his observation, Sakata Ginpachi, who was on his way to the school building in the morning, decided that the man was a suspicious person..

Ginpachi, who had gone through the back gate instead of the main gate and headed for the back of the gym as a shortcut, spotted the man.

The man ― to tell the truth, actually appeared in the manga as the Toyako Hermit, but here at Gintama High School, such achievements are irrelevant.

A man who is not a member of the faculty of Gintama High School is reaching behind the gym in the morning for what appears to be a pair of pants caught on a tree branch.

More importantly, there was also a large black bag under the man's feet.

‘Panty thief,’ Ginpachi thought.

He also thought there probably was a lot of underwear in that bag, so he called out to him.

He was suspicious, so of course didn’t speak kindly to him.

“Oi, what the fuck are you doing?”

The Toyako Hermit's shoulders quivered, and he looked back at Ginpachi. The frightened look on his face deepened Ginpachi's suspicion.

“You Panty thief!”

“Eh? No, You’re wr - “ He was about to say, "I'm sorry," when Ginpachi started to furiously run towards the Hermit.

Arrest of a suspicious person → His reputation goes up → He gets a reward bonus, right? 

It was a simple chart that led him to this action.

Seeing Ginpachi's sudden attack, the Toyako Hermit fled in a panic and his escape was faster than he had expected.

“Hey, Wait!” Ginpachi yelled.

Just around the corner from the gym, a teacher appeared.

Nice timing for a female teacher wearing a white coat and a miniskirt! 

"Tsukuyo! Get him! He's a pervert!” Ginpachi shouted to Tsukuyo.

Tsukuyo didn’t say anything, but she understood and made a move. 

She quickly stepped in front of the fleeing man, grabbed him by the wrist, and threw him violently to the ground. When Hermit was slammed into the ground with a thud, he simply fainted.

"Ah, yeah! You did it!" Ginpachi said, stopping by Hermit's side. The Toyako Hermit stretched out on the ground, his eyes white and fully unconscious.

“That man, ..who is this person?” Tsukuyo asked. 

“A panty thief,” Ginpachi replied and smiled, pointing to the spot where the Toyako Hermit had been standing earlier.

"See how those pants are stuck on that tree branch over there? He was reaching for it."

"Uh, are those ......really pants?" Just when Tsukuyo was looking at him doubtfully, the wind picked up. The white cloth, which had been caught on the branch, was blown into the air.

"Oh, ......?" Ginpachi lifted one eyebrow.

The cloth that flew in the air was not pants by any means, but just a handkerchief.

Actually, there is a big difference between a pair of pants and a handkerchief.

"Ginpachi, are ya sure yer not just making hasty assumptions?" Tsukuyo said. 

No. ...... No, no ......," Ginpachi said, gulping. “Don't jump to conclusions. You can't be too optimistic, because when I called out to him, he freaked out and ran away."

Yer had just simply taken him by surprise, hadn’t ya? The reason why he ran away might be ‘cause you tried to attack him without even questioning him,” she said and Ginpachi couldn't argue with her.

However, it has not yet been determined that Tsukuyo’s theory was correct.

"No, no, no, no, he's a pervert. There's bag’s probably full of underwear!”

"If yer so sure, why don't ya check it out?" Tsukuyo said and Ginpachi went to get the black bag that seemed to belong to the Toyako Hermit. Tsukuyo and him opened it together. 

What came out was a white coat, a stethoscope, and something that looked like a penlight - in short, a set of medical instruments used by doctors.

“I knew it,” Ginpachi smirked and nodded. “This guy was a pervert who liked to dress up as doctors. Yea, you were right to beat him up.”

“No, ......,” Tsukuyo said in a calm voice. “He's not a cosplayer, he's a real doctor, isn't he?

“Eh, for real?!”

“Aaah ...... What day is it, by the way?” 

Ginpachi replied, and Tsukuyo nodded.

"Hmm, no doubt about it. This man’s a real doctor. Because today’s the day of the physical examination and health checkup,” Tsukuyo said and pulled out a printed sheet from her skirt pocket.

The printout was a monthly schedule for the staff, and today's column was indeed labeled as "Third Grade Physical and Health Examination’. Next month, Gintama High School was scheduled to have a sports festival. The purpose of today's physical and health checkup was to check the health of the students before the sports festival.

“Apparently, this man was an officially hired doctor from our school.,” Tsukuyo continued. 

“An officially hired…,” Ginpachi muttered and looked back at the Toyako Hermit stretched out on the ground. He wasn't dead, but he also didn’t show any signs of waking up.

But then again, if this guy doesn't get up, of course the physical examination won’t take place. It was inevitable that there would be an uproar, "What's going on, why hasn't the doctor come?”

That was not good.

This was a very bad situation.

He mistook him for a suspicious person and she knocked him unconscious by violently throwing him. ...... They won’t get away with it. 

Ginpachi took out a cigarette from the pocket of his lab coat, put one in and lit it. Then, after exhaling the first smoke, he said:

"......Tsukuyo. You're doing a terrible job.”

“What?”

"How dare you violently injure a doctor who came for a checkup without even bothering to confirm his identity?"

“Ginpachi…”

“I know what you're going to say. You're going to apologize to the principal and you want me to come with you, right?

“Ginpachi…”

“Don't worry about it. It's just a collegial(/friendship) thing. You're the one who's to blame, but I'll follow up with you to make sure your crime is as light as possible.”

“Ginpachi…”

"Well, let's get on with it. Let's go to the principal's office right away. Confess your crimes.” and as he turned on his heel and started to walk away, two kunai pierced the back of Ginpachi's head with a thud.

"Wait a minute," Tsukuyo's voice said.

No, no, no, you're the one who has to wait!" Ginpachi shouts as he pulls out the kunai stuck in the back of his head.

"Tsukuyo, do you realize we're in a teacher's setting? You should at least use chalk or something!"

"I don't care about the settings right now. Do ya understand the situation? How dare ya to blame me for yer sins?"

"No, I don't give a shit. You're the one who threw him over."

“Ya the one who told me to get him!”

“I told you to get him, but I didn't tell you to throw him over your shoulder and knock him out!"

“If it weren't for yer terrible misjudgment, none of this would have happened in the first place!”

"But it's not just my fault, is it? Isn't it about seven to three parts your fault too?" Ginpachi said in a softer voice.

“Ya think a third is my fault?”

"Hmm. I mean, you're the seven." Just after saying that, Ginpachi was hit by countless kunai and pinned to the wall of the gym.

...... umm, relax, Tsukki," Ginpachi said with a pale face. (Note: he says the exact same thing as in that one scene in Courtesan of a Nation Arc … Un, ochitsuite, tsukkī)

“Well, if I'm the seven, can we at least work together on a plan? The doctor who was called in for a checkup was mistakenly knocked unconscious. ...... I think this is pretty bad, don't you?”

What will do you if GinTsu is end game? I'm scared.

Okay, this is the last time I’m going to answer this question in detail. From now on, whenever I get an ask like this, I’m going to link it straight to this one.

What will I do? Absolutely nothing.

I don’t care enough to do anything, to be completely honest. If Sorachi wants to follow the typical trend of Shounen manga and hastily add a het pairing at the end of Gintama, that’s his choice! I may not agree with it, but eh, it’s Sorachi’s story and he can do whatever the hell he wants with it. 

Gintoki and Hijikata are my favorite pairing in Gintama, this is true. I love their relationship, I love their dynamic, I love the evolution of their friendship -- the two of them inspire me. I don’t read Gintama because I’m secretly hoping for the two of them to get together, especially when there’s no way that would ever happen in such a genre. I read it because I love the story and its characters. I’m also not straight and I’m desperate for quality representation, so I use Gintoki and Hijikata to create the content that I seek. I won’t give a shit if Gintoki ends up with Tsukuyo and okay, maybe 10 year old me would get upset over it, but I’m not 10 anymore and I see things differently now.

I think being a writer is what has changed my viewpoint on this. I create original characters and plots and on top of that, I give myself and others the representation I seek. It isn’t Sorachi’s job to give me what I want and when I say, “I’m exhausted and turned off by heteronormativity,” absolutely zero content creators have to take that to heart. My wants and needs do not have to be met by other people, but I sure as hell can create stories and write books about all the things I crave. Representation for myself, ace characters, bi characters, pan characters, nonbinary characters, characters with disabilities, etc etc -- I can take everything I want to see more of and use my work to normalize it. 

Sorachi can tell his story any way he wants and I’ll enjoy it because it’s his story and I love his work! I don’t personally feel like Gintama needs any pairings at the end ((I think Gintoki learning to love himself and being happy with his kids as the Yorozuya and having those he cares about most nearby -- the Shinsengumi, Otae, Otose, Tama -- would be a more suitable ending)), but it’s Sorachi’s choice! I feel like most people assume that because GinHiji / HijiGin is my preferred pairing, then I’m going to go ballistic and be all sad and hurt if the story ends with Gintoki and a female character. What people don’t seem to understand is that I prefer male/male and female/female pairings because I’m looking for representation and as someone that rarely, if ever, gets quality representation in anything, I fully expect heteronormativity to come bite me in the ass. But the end pairing, if there is one, won’t change how I feel about the story and everything it has done for me since I got into it. 

tl;dr: I don’t care if Gintoki gets paired with Prince Baka or a parfait in the end. All that matters is that the story ends the way Sorachi wants it to and I will always be grateful for the work he has done because he has inspired me and influenced me in so many incredible ways.
