Ray reminds me of Sutoku Tenno- a man who was highly influential during his time. (I believe his story is briefly covered in bill wurtz' history of japan?)

"Former Emperor Sutoku was banished from Kyōto and forced to spend the rest of his days exiled to Sanuki Province. He shaved his head and became a monk, devoting himself copying holy manuscripts to send back to Kyōto. The court feared that the deposed Sutoku would attempt to curse them. It was rumored that he had bitten off his own tongue and wrote the manuscripts in his own blood, imbuing them with his hatred for the merciless imperial court. The court added insult to injury by refusing to accept any of his manuscripts."

Ray reminds me of Sutoku in that he was part of an attempt to rebel against royal forces and ended up having power for only a brief moment... Before losing everything. Even after death, he remains despite it all.

Authors: Takeda Izumo II, Miyoshi Shôraku, Namiki Senryû I

History: The play "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura" was originally written for the puppet theater (Bunraku) and staged for the first time in the 11th lunar month of 1747 in Ôsaka at the Takemotoza. It was adapted for Kabuki the following year and staged for the first time in the 1st lunar month of 1748 in Ise with Kataoka Nizaemon IV (Tokaiya Ginpei, Yokawa no Zenji Kakuhan) and Yamamoto Koheiji (Tadanobu). It was performed for the first time in a city licensed theater in the 5th lunar month of 1748, in Edo at the Nakamuraza [casting]. "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura" was performed for the first time in Ôsaka, at the Naka no Shibai, in the 8th lunar month of 1748.
