This antic comedy, Fellini's first solo feature, is about a young couple from the provinces honeymooning in Rome. The husband, Ivan Cavalli (Leopoldo Trieste), doesn't know that his new wife, Wanda (Brunella Bovo), is an ardent fan of a fotoromanzo (a magazine serial that tells a story in photographs). When Wanda finds out that the serial, The White Sheik, is produced just around the corner from the hotel where she and Ivan are staying, she sneaks out in hopes of meeting Fernando Rivoli (Alberto Sordi), the actor who stars in the series as the sheik. Meanwhile, Ivan has scheduled their stay in Rome, including an audience with the pope, down to the minute, so when his family gathers to join the newlyweds and Ivan discovers that she has disappeared, madness ensues. Wanda finds herself swept up by the company photographing the next installment of the series and being wooed by the lecherous Rivoli himself. Ivan indulges in frantic attempts to cover up his wife's absence. Eventually he meets up with the prostitute Cabiria (Giulietta Masina), whose story Fellini will tell five years later in Nights of Cabiria (1957). The White Sheik is remarkable enough for a debut feature, though it was quickly overshadowed by his next one, I Vitelloni (1953), which also featured Trieste in its cast. The White Sheik was only the second film for Trieste, who had appeared in a small role in Shamed (Giovanni Paolucci, 1947), for which he wrote the screenplay. He proved to be such an impressive character actor that he had a long career, with roles in such movies as Cinema Paradiso (Giuseppe Tornatore, 1988), The Name of the Rose (Jean-Jacques Annaud, 1986), and The Godfather: Part II (Francis Ford Coppola, 1974).

Spinning off the Ridge Racer series, R: Racing Evolution was one of the many racers of the generation responding to the popularity of Gran Turismo, and the console racing sim scene. The series signature presentation is here--complete with slick menus and bumping electronic beats--but it’s paired with simulation style handling and real, licensed cars and tracks. All of this is delivered through a full story mode bearing the marks of Namco’s Ace Combat series, complete with pre-rendered cutscenes between events, and in-game radio delivering story beats. 

The story presentation alone makes R a novelty within the sim space. It starts with your character, Rena Hayami, being recruited as a professional racer after she responds to an accident at the Motegi circuit, and impresses a manager with her ambulance driving. It then spirals off into a rivalry with Spanish racer Gina Cavalli--the only other woman racing in the male dominated league (1)--and eventually escalates to behind the scenes politics with the shadowy racing organization sponsoring Rena’s team.

The voice acting, staging and expressions will all be familiar to anyone who’s played the Ace Combat team, and naturally leads to the same kind of melodrama. It’s all bolstered by a wild system that essentially gives other drivers a health bar. Each car has a name and meter above it, representing the driver and their mental fortitude (2). Swerving, tailgating and closing in on them will cause it to fill, and when full they’ll begin to audibly panic, and start losing control. They might slow down or swerve, or even spin out completely at the next turn. Lose them, however, and the bar will reset entirely, encouraging you to keep the pressure on even if you can’t pass. 

Your manager will even call over the radio, telling you to “make him feel the heat” or “send him into side wall”(3) as you approach other racers, and you’ll hear the fear in other drivers as they become astonished by the speed of “that damn number 76” as if some demon was gaining on them. (4)

Plenty of arcade racers encourage you to lay on the carnage, but R is probably the only sim racer I’ve seen do the same. It’s so deeply at odds with the principles of sim racing, which encourage clean driving, not only because it’s more authentic, but because people could die during a crash at that speed. Kinda ironic, given Rena’s backstory as an ambulance driver. 

The sim itself is kind of scattershot. R gives you options for a full sim HUD, with bars showing you gas and braking pressure, and when the cars’ assists kick in (5). You can tweak nearly every aspect of your car’s handling--though there’s no options for changing parts or aesthetics. 

R doesn’t seem to care either way if you engage with its sim elements. Despite the detail, none of those tweaks are ever necessary, and the handling is forgiving enough that if you generally drive with an awareness of racing theory (slow down before corners, enter from the outside, exit from the inside) you can get through most races with little issue. The game doesn’t even penalize you for using other cars as a buffer, or driving off track to skip corners. 

I found R difficult when I tried it years ago, but with a little more knowledge of the basics, R turned out to be much more welcoming than other entries in the genre. Co-drivers and pit crew give you basic feedback on your driving, complimenting you when you take a good line or brake well, or giving you suggestions on what to improve when you approach a turn improperly. In fact, this was the first game to make me understand that you want to hit the brakes not only to slow down, but to shift the car’s weight forward and make it easier to direct. Concepts like that are easily understood behind the wheel of a real car, but require a more direct intellectual understanding without the feedback of real forces acting on your body. 

R cares more about variety than consistency as well. The headline discipline is clearly the circuit races, since that’s where story is generally delivered, and where you get direct interaction with other racers, but there’s a major rally racing component as well. It’s the part of the game I found the most engaging, since the courses provide more interesting mixes of terrain and cornering, giving races a varied rhythm. 

Unlike Top Gear Pocket 2’s rally races, R also takes a more traditional approach to rally, with a single racer on the course at a time, and competition largely based on passing points on the track with better times. The time trial focus makes it easy to drill down on improving your technique, and the co-driver shines here, not only giving you the usual rally racing guidance, but motivating feedback that keeps you aware of how you’re faring against the other drivers, even if they’re not on the track. 

There’s a few other novelty events, like drag racing or one that has you racing a souped up Fiat against standard circuit cars, but generally these feel even more out of place, and largely inconsequential. They’re never really given the build up or narrative context to make you understand what’s supposed to be special about them, and you don’t get any new in-race dialogue to emphasize the difference. So they end up as arbitrary changes to the handling model that exist only to give you something different to do. 

R's narrative generally seems to follow that same approach. The strong setup and familiar character dynamics give way to a set of arbitrary scenarios that don't tie together, and don't have any proper narrative weight. At one point you're forced to throw a race, instantly failing if you manage to get anything but second place. Rena never reacts to this betrayal, and while it eventually reveals some dark history with your manager, he never gives a justification or changes his demeanor. It makes the final confrontation where you both defect from your sponsor to form your own team, and eventually face off against them, entirely weightless. The final antagonist doesn't even get a character intro, just showing up in the final race as a name driving for your previous sponsor. 

Namco apparently worked with part of the team that helped them build Ace Combat 3 (6), but none of the detailed scenarios, character motivations, and world building of that title shows up here. The Ace Combat series in general does a lot with a little voice over, but R doesn't match those efforts. Even compared to previous series entries like R4(6), which delivered its storylines with only a single character per route, and pre-race preamble, R's character motivations and emotional beats are muddy and underdeveloped. 

None of this prevented me from enjoying the melodrama that R delivers. The pure novelty in the way it delivers its story carries it through its short playtime, and I genuinely wish the series had additional entries, if only to continue to refine the ideas here. Other racing games have attempted story modes, but few make it the focus in the same way. The in-race chatter in particular gives a more direct interaction with other drivers, and delivers a radio play style form of storytelling that compliments the form. 

With a little more attention to its characters and narrative structure, it could easily be the basis for a sports anime style drama that'd throw off the monotony that can sometimes come with sim racing. Sadly, this is instead a short and interesting one off in racing history. But if racing sims have taught me anything, it's that you can't always get the ideal podium finish. Sometimes you've got to be happy with "good enough".

Orlando Portento è un fiume in piena. Settantacinque anni di vita vissuta tra alti e bassi, tra successi e sconfitte, tra ricchezza e difficoltà economiche e tra vecchi e nuovi amori.

Molti lo ricorderanno per essere stato il marito della soubrette non che infermiera di Striscia la Notizia Angela Cavagna, altri per essere stato mentore di un’ esordiente Beppe Grillo, ma la maggior parte delle persone lo ricorderanno sicuramente per la sua sfuriata durante una puntata del reality La Fattoria nel 2006, in cui a suon di cammellate e triccheballacche ha raggiunto il centro dello studio accanto alla padrona di casa Barbara d’Urso ed ha iniziato ad inveire contro quest’ultima e contro gli autori del programma perché, a suo dire, la consorte Angela Cavagna era stata eliminata in maniera irregolare.

Questi suoi originali e stravaganti cavalli di battaglia verbali entrano con prepotenza nel linguaggio comune rivelandosi dei veri e propri tormentoni ancor oggi attuali. L’ultima sua apparizione televisiva risale all’autunno 2019 ospite a Pomeriggio 5 nel quale accusava l’ex moglie e in cui lamentava serie difficoltà economiche. Oggi a distanza di tempo incontriamo e conosciamo meglio un Portento chiamato Orlando.

D. Orlando, nel 2019 ha dichiarato di essere in serie difficoltà economiche, percependo una pensione bassa, pagando un affitto alto e avendo quasi finito i risparmi, la situazione è migliorata?

R. Niente affatto! La pensione è di 646€ mentre l’affitto è di 580€, i risparmi di una vita sono ufficialmente finiti! Sono sempre più rovinato...

D. È vero che per sbarcare il lunario fa il jolly presso un ristorante delle colline genovesi ?

R. Eh già, sono pensionato e ho settantacinque anni ma ugualmente lavoro presso il ristorante Forchettone da Leandro sulla collina genovese di Fontanegli dove faccio l’entrenouse, l’intrattenitore, il direttore, il primo cameriere, primo sanificatore, primo sommelier, ma ho rifiutato il titolo di primo lavapiatti. Errata Cocige! Non sono un jolly sono un mazzo di carte, ma manco quelle mi posso giocare più con il Gomit!

D. Forse intende dire Covid Portento?

R. Eh no, gomit! Tutti si salutano con il gomito quindi è gomit, e con il gomit sono più rovinato del solito dato che nemmeno al ristorante si lavora con continuità con ste zone gialle, verdi, blu, rosse ecc ecc

D. Qualche tempo fa abbiamo assistito ad una guerra mediatica verso l’ex moglie Angela Cavagna, che pare sia  finita nelle aule di tribunale. Come stanno realmente le cose?

R. Penso che Angela abbia preso la querelite, una rara e difficilmente curabile forma di querelite; la scienza si sta adoperando per cercare una soluzione medica per farla guarire da questa patologia. Ahimè di rimbalzo però ha infettato anche me quindi attenzione perché querelo tutti anch’io come ha fatto la signora!

D. Non pensa sia giunto il momento di seppellire l’ascia di guerra nei confronti della sua ex moglie?

R. Dobbiamo sottolineare che i pellerossa si sono estinti da un po’ e quindi non vedo asce di guerra da sotterrare. Mi è rimasto un totem somigliante ad Angela Cavagna come ricordo...

D. Il settimanale Oggi qualche tempo fa la dava come papabile naufrago dell’Isola dei Famosi ma alla fine non è figurato nel cast ufficiale, come mai?

R. Perché sono sull’ammuffimento totale. Ho rifiutato L’Isola dei Famosi anche se avevo bisogno di quattrini. Ad una certa età inizi a prendere qualche chiletto ma se fossi andato in Honduras senza mangiare la mia pasta e senza bere il mio buon bicchiere di vino dimagrivo troppo, mi si scavava il viso come quello di Edoardo De Filippo “‘adda passá ‘a nuttata! ”: non era il caso di naufragare e rischiare la vita alla mia veneranda età!

Tra una sciatica e l’altra mi piacerebbe semmai partecipare ad una specie di “Grande Casa di Riposo Vip” ambientato in un bell’ospizio risanato. Mi immagino già lì con Sandra Milo, Tony Dallara, Gina Lollobrigida, Luca Giurato ecc ecc, mentre a condurre metterei i quasi centenari Pippo Baudo dai piani della casa di cura e Maurizio Costanzo dalla portineria in accettazione!

D. L’8 marzo uscirà il suo primo libro dal titolo “Due Quori e una Cavagna”, di cosa parla?

R. Il libro è edito da Pathos Edizioni di Torino e la prefazione me la sono fatta io perché nessun critico letterario, storico, idraulico, dentista, elettricista, netturbino ha voluto scrivermela, ho dovuto cantare e portare la croce, nemmeno il mio prete confessore di colore ha accettato il mio invito!

Il libretto parla di vent’anni e più di cronaca italiana, di curiosità, di incazzicchiamenti, di amarezze, di successi e sconfitte, ambedue impostori, frammenti di vita vissuta, illusioni perdute, sogni sempre attuali. Realtà tramontate, svanite e confuse tra le nebbie dei ricordi, dolci e amari, e degli anni che volano come aquile che con il tempo perdono la proverbiale s...vista. Gli intermezzi, i fatti e i riferimenti descritti, sono realmente accaduti. Unica qualità positiva? Genova...È una lettura simpatica e di facile comprensione, cerco in un goffo tentativo di emulare il Giovannino Guareschi, vedi lo Zibaldino ecc ecc

D. Non ha mai nascosto di essere un uomo di destra, le ha causato problemi questo nella sua carriera?

R. Sempre e dico sempre! Purtroppo di rimbalzo anche la Cavagna ci è andata di mezzo.

Racconto un aneddoto: conducevo ogni lunedì su Rai3 regione Liguria il mio programma “Sport...ento” e all’ingresso della sede Rai di Genova di Corso Europa una sera mi sono trovato un cartello con su scritto “La Rai paga un fascista!” riferito a me medesimo; morale della favola? La portineria non aveva visto nessuno e il cartello sparì.

Solo per farle capire l’accanimento che i sinistroidi avevano con me!  A me e ad Angela ci hanno cacciato due volte dalla Rai senza rinnovarci il contratto solo perché di destra.

Una volta però dopo il non rinnovo mi rivolsi direttamente a Gianfranco Fini, ci recammo presso la sede di Alleanza Nazionale a Roma, io attesi fuori mentre Angela entrò nel suo ufficio chiedendogli aiuto, lui da gran signore senza dire troppe cose alzò il telefono e chiamò Confalonieri, pochi giorni dopo la nostra visita arrivò un contratto per Angela da parte di Mediaset per un programma.

D. Perché ama definirsi un ex di tutto?

R. Perché è così belin! Sono stato autista, preparatore atletico, autore, conduttore, ristoratore, manager, cabarettista, allenatore di calcio, calciatore, insegnante di tecnica calcistica, ho gestito negozi di abbigliamento...se non sono un ex di tutto io chi può esserlo?!

D. Sembra che abbia dimenticato la Cavagna con un nuovo amore, Nicoletta...

R. Bah non è un nuovo amore, è un amorino.

Nicoletta fa la guardia cinofila e mi ha accalappiato, d’altronde ero solo come un cane! Ognuno vive a casa sua, dopo Angela nessuna donna ha più dormito nel mio letto!

D. Lei è stato co-autore non che amico di un esordiente Beppe Grillo, che ricordi ha di lui e di quel periodo?

R. Siamo stati amici nel nostro periodo di adolescenza quindi un centinaio di anni fa circa, abitavamo nello stesso quartiere, San Fruttuoso a Genova dove io vivo tutt’oggi.

Grillo era molto simpatico, era questa la sua carta vincente per conquistare le donne, i denti storti la bellezza non di certo!  Giuse, noi amici lo chiamavamo così aveva alle spalle una buona famiglia, ma nonostante tutto era affetto da una tirchieria innata, non aveva il braccino corto, era totalmente mutilato!

L’Avaro di Moliere è un filantropo al confronto di Grillo! Andava in giro con la tuta senza tasche apposta per non offrire mai neanche un caffè, a lui il pacchetto di sigarette durava tantissimo perché andava sempre a scrocco per non consumare le sue!

Sono stato un mezzo profeta nel 2013 quando fui ospitato da Paolo Del Debbio a Quinta Colonna, in quell’occasione ho definito i cinquestellini dei sonnambuli, che appena si sarebbero svegliati sarebbero caduti dal balcone prendendo una facciata per terra che li avrebbe frantumati, e guarda un po’ che è accaduto tra gennaio e febbraio al governo...

D. Come mai la vostra amicizia poi è finita?

R. Io presentavo nella nostra città degli eventi presso i giardini dell’ Acquasola chiamati “Le Serate di Genova” ed una sera era ospite Pippo Baudo. Il mio impresario Morelli dietro le quinte si avvicina a Pippo dicendogli: “è più grande Portento di Grillo, aiutalo!” e lui risposte: “e come faccio ad aiutarlo?! Grillo non vuole!”. Ascoltai questa conversazione a distanza, e nessuno si accorse di me. Da quel giorno io con Grillo ho chiuso, lo pensavo un amico invece non si comportò da amico.

Lo vidi circa quindici anni fa ad un funerale ma non ci siamo salutati, poi cinque anni fa incrociati a piazza Martinez ma sono andato via dritto a passi lunghi e ben distesi.

Bella riconoscenza e gratitudine quella sua, e pensare che all’inizio della sua carriera sono stato il primo ad accorgersi del suo talento e a motivarlo, in merito a ciò racconto un episodio inedito di cui non ho mai parlato.

Era agli inizi Grillo, ricevo una telefonata accorata e di supplica da suo fratello Andrea che tutti chiamavano Andreino in cui mi veniva chiesto di convincere Giuse (Beppe) a ritirarsi dalle scene e a tornare a lavorare nell’azienda di famiglia perché avevano bisogno di lui; io risposi al fratello di non avere fretta, di aspettare e dargli tempo un anno, nel caso la carriera di comico non avesse preso il volo mi sarei adoperato io a convincerlo di smettere e tornare a Genova a lavorare nell’azienda di famiglia. Giuse ascoltava molto i miei consigli, era   condizionato, in maniera buona intendo, da me. Quindi se avessi ascoltato il fratello ora Giuse non sarebbe quello che è! Con il senno di poi forse era meglio...

D. Nel 2006 ha raggiunto il suo momento di maggior popolarità irrompendo in studio a La Fattoria e polemizzando con la conduttrice Barbara d’Urso a suon di cammellate e triccheballacche; era una scena studiata a tavolino?

R. Ero incazzaticchio veramente, altro che scena studiata a tavolino. Ero nero perché a mio avviso avevano eliminato la Cavagna in maniera irregolare e così sono andato al centro dello studio accanto a Barbara d’Urso e ho iniziato a sfogarmi a suon di cammellate e triccheballacche. Finito tutto sono andato nel residence e mi sono fatto due spaghetti con l’olio senza nemmeno il grana grattugiato perché manco c’era.

Il giorno dopo tutti parlavano di me e sono iniziati gli inviti in tutte le principali trasmissioni di Mediaset: un grande successo travolgente ma inaspettato. Ancora oggi la gente mi ferma per strada per un selfie e vuole che faccia il gesto del triccheballacche! Incredibile, dopo quindici anni ancora mi ricordano per quei cinque minuti di incazzicchiamento vero però!

D. Ha compiuto da poco 75 anni, come si immagina Portento tra 10/15 anni?

R. Non mi vedrò perché toglierò tutti gli specchi di casa! Andando al bar vicino a casa mi consolo, lì incontro coetanei messi molto peggio di me, ammuffiti che prendono la pillola blu perché non gli tira più, o di duecento chili, o con sette motorini nel cuore, o con problemi alla prostata, io a parte la pastiglia che prendo per la pressione alta e la sciatica non ho altre patologie! Quasi quasi rimetto gli specchi a casa a questo punto...
