for spirk fics specifically i love creative/unorthodox uses of mind melds. mind melds as an expression of intimacy and trust, mind melds to solve a problem, mind melds as part of whump/sickfic. just. yes. i love seeing all the different interpretations of how it works/what you can do with it/what it feels like. theres no wrong answers really as long as it makes sense in the context and you're consistent with it

also i love love love old married spirk. old married spirk is so. nsjiwgbrwsjgr. yes. good shit. give me spirk being domestic and knowing each others little idiosyncrasies and taking care of each other and. augh.

whumpmas in july day 2: favorite whump tropes

oh boy, i was looking forward to this one! 😍😍😍

i obviously adore stoic whumpees who feel they cannot show their pain or distress. i love ✨ misunderstandings ✨ but not the stupid kind, the sort where the conflict is believable and the hurt stems from past traumas (i.e. a dubious ally turning traitor or a whumpee believing their caretaker is their owner). i also love something i call “social whump”, being when a character is heavily ostracized or outcast, often mistreated, by their group or social setting. emotional whump is a big one for me, especially angst that revolves around low self worth and dehumanization.

i love begging: pathetic begging, kneeling, sobbing, pleading, bargaining, fawning, hysteria, terror, the whole nine yards. all begging is good (especially when it’s quiet and desperate) but begging that’s big and heartbreaking is always a massive favorite. especially if they cry. gimme all the weeping certainty of horrors.

noncon whump is also a favorite of mine, again, particularly if it’s institutional in some way (like the bbu with Romantics). noncon whump as a “casual” feature of the world the whumpee lives in, something almost unremarkable, in a way, but that’s another layer of horror. noncon whump is also great as a horrifying punishment, especially if it’s a “beat-down” style of punishment, gang-assault as an act of breaking the whumpee or punishing them for some big infraction. the subtle awfulness of casual sexual hurt, whatever the nature of the whumpee, is very good when done well.

when it comes to physical punishment, i really love tropes in fantasy whump that hurt a specific group (i.e. silver hurting werewolves or sunlight hurting vampires). i also love ritualized or systemic punishment, such as whippings or pillories or denial of necessities like food or medicine. stuff that emphasizes power, control and dehumanization. punishment that centers on showing a whumpee their “place”.

i love team dynamics, whether that be a loving assemblage of caretakers for a lone whumpee, a band of whumpees forging a bond through suffering, or a cruel or apathetic clique excluding a member. i love cold and calculating whumpers with a lot of self-righteous justification for their actions (but brutal heavy-handed schoolyard bullies are fun too). i love patient, quiet caretakers often burdened by their own responsibilities or hurts and also sunshiny sweethearts who see the best in everyone.

i love long-term imprisonment, institutionalized slavery (bbu, gladiator, fantasy, you name it), and a lot of hurt from the top down, rigid stratification and hierarchy meant to coerce and punish.

canon compliant or alternate universe?- canon compliant my beloved but it has to be done right, otherwise it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. i guess the same could be said about AUs, but canon compliant is probably still my favorite (though it's a close race)

I am sooooooo stoked to share it with you!!!!! I wish I could take a few days to just finish writing it so I can finally start publishing it!!!

Getting to write scary Tarkin has been a totally new challenge that I LOVE!!! In fact, I've never written from the Empire's perspective except in Sidious and Skywalker...but that's really just Sidious and Vader's persepctive (please be warned...I was in a really dark place when I wrote that fic...it's not for everyone LOL).

And Cassian, in particular, is very different than any other character I've written. He's intelligent, intuitive, physically strong, mentally tough, processes information and adapts really fast, has a sense of humor but can be very serious, is confident but knows when he's made a mistake, and is capable of incredible warmth and chilling ruthlessness. Gimme gimme gimme!!!!

It's been fun to write characters that aren't forbidden from having emotional attachment (I'm looking at you, Jedi LOL!!!!!!!!). There's no magic, no Force, just people with complex emotions who might feel one way while circumstances make those feelings risky.

I'm really sorry if I'm not making any sense. I caught a cold a Celebration and my brain is feeling a little squishy.

Ooooh mind telling us about the stobin paranoia one? Or the country club meet cute?

Oh gawd, oh gawd; my dumbass critical anxiety (on top of being exhausted after working 32 hours in two days; tbh it's mostly that second thing) kept me from answering this until now.

I do want to remind whoever, including OP, that I don't really have anything more than bare bones synopses for any of the ideas I mentioned. Also, i haven't talked up a thing I've created in so long that I don't know if I remember how.

That being said, another Steddie acquaintance, @ataliagold (go read their Steddie things maybe?? They're very good, gimme just the right amount of yummy whump) asked me about both of these in PMs so I have shared a little bit about each and they liked both concepts a lot, which gave me some courage.

So, anyway, as for the Stobin paranoia fic, which I've wondered if perhaps "paranoia" is too strong a word but eeeh... Basically, it takes place right after Starcourt (maybe like the week following or so). It's pretty well-established that Steve and Robin were still at least a bit high and hopped up on truth serum during The Bathroom Talk, not to mention the memory blurring is probably even more effed up by Steve's 74th concussion in three years (lol... sorta), so Steve gets it in his head that he somehow forced Robin to come out to him and, knowing how important safety is for a hidden queer person, especially in a place like Hawkins, he starts spiraling and isolating from her. He doesn't deserve to have his person if he has to manipulate them into divulging their secrets to him after all, she's far better off without the resident douchenozzle, Steve Harrington, invading her space and privacy and having any intimate (platonic) expectations of their relationship. While he's all in his own head about that, Robin starts coming around to check on him, only to realize she's being ignored. This causes her to eventually start spiraling too - of course the great King Steve couldn't handle being friends with a fucking dyke, of course he would snub her after the smoke and fog cleared and he remembered that she'd spurned his advances, what a load of crock, she should have known better - thus their newly formed super bond starts having holes drilled into it... Anyway, the fic is about that whole misunderstanding and them trying to work through it. I just love that kinda trope 'cause I'm the worst.

As for the Steddie country club meet-cute, it starts off similarly to a couple other fics I've read here Eddie is forced to go straight (financially only) after Reefer Rick is arrested and his supply dries up and the cops have hounded him and Wayne enough times and etc. He ends up employed at the semi-local country club predominantly as a caddy. Decent pay, some tips even, enough downtime while standing on the sidelines and aimlessly following his current client around that he can think up some future campaign ideas... and, early on, another perk introduced is his good-looking apparent coworker (who he unfortunately crosses paths with while coworker is being reamed by one of the more infamous club members). He and Steve pass each other a few more times and begin engaging, closing some distance until it's unfortunately revealed that Steve is NOT his coworker and is in fact closely related to the rich fucker that was seen yelling at him on day one. He had a good excuse for being in uniform that first time but has obviously decided to lie in order to fuck with Eddie every day since.

Well, anyway, those are the general premises of those particular fics. I feel like I gave too much away but also like I didn't really say anything at all. Lol.

And I think I'm pretty self indulgent, that I suppose most stuff I write is my guilty pleasures ??? Just straight up tons of angst, if not whump, I honestly adore, haha! Gimme a protagonist suffering a burden they never asked for, learning to lean on others, and I will drag them into some new kind of misery istg. Even my more comedic stuff, someone is suffering in some way, hehe. Also time travel / time loop angst. It's so good. The sudden change to everyone else while they slowly lose their shit? GOLD!

But, there's def more specifics, like: the trope of characters turning evil has me in a choke hold like nothing else, usually. Whether that's like alternate universe, magical artifact, what have you, I will be re-watching whatever episodes/chapters those are with glee. I guarantee I have watched every aired episode of Spider-Man's venom arc in any animated series, except for 1994 series. Like, I said, choke hold. (The best arc is in Specular Spider-Man, which should not be surprising.) OH, AND truth serum. Classic, stunning, iconic. Also if a character has a destiny/role/responsibilities they suddenly reject, I am sat. When they choose themselves and healing >>>>> .

Also, usually just like, evil/villainous cartoon women has me giggling and kicking my feet when they're on screen. Twirling my hair as we speak. Especially if they have a temper. Oh, and I usually don't like shipping but like...freak for freak. Whatever Hannibal and Will got going on from Hannibal series? Incredible. Utterly compelling. It's not a romance but it also is, if you think about it, but also beyond that.

Gonna go with the closing chapter. There's something so satisfying about it - especially when writing in order.

Light and Fluffy or Dark and Gritty

Nope. No. This one I won't pick. That's my whole issue I keep whining to my friends about. I want dark shit, but I want a fluffy ending, and I can barely find it, and I am losing readers on either end of it, and I'm gonna cry.

Animal Companion or Found Family

I'll be honest, I have one (1) char with an animal (not a special one) and I am already annoyed because I keep forgetting the dog exists. Nah, gonna stick to found family here. I can leave them outside the door without getting accused of animal abuse.

Horror or Romance

Isn't that the same? /s

I guess if I HAD to - romance. Because I am easily scared. But the thought of a pure romance without any fantasy elements (and let's be honest, without a disproportionate amount of blood) is not very exciting.

Now the romantic subplot between angst, drama and the world ending? Gimme gimme.

Hard Magic System or Soft Magic System

Soft magic system, mostly because I am so over worldbuilding, and I just cram in whatever I need in the moment. Oh, I need a healer who can't control his magic? Done, because I said so. Next!

Stand-alone or Series

I love stand-alones that tie together. In the same world, perhaps with recurring chars, either in a major or minor role, but each story stands on its own.

That kinda solves the problem of barely finding the motivation to read one (1) book without subscribing to a series, but also having more if I love it.

So I try to write what I love as reader.

One Project at a Time or Always Juggling 2+

I guess I have one main project, usually, but that doesn't mean there's not several others in different stages lurking in the background.

Fantasy all the way. Not only do I love it, and always have, Sci-Fi also has a too high chance of coming across tropes I, uh, let's say, dislike.

Character Description or Setting Description

I guess setting, because I don't know how to describe characters. Most lists of "words you can use! :)" make me wanna cry. He has a... face. A human face. And hair. Let's move on.

For the setting, I can at least sneak little details in, and sometimes people get distracted and don't notice I have no idea what I am talking about.

First Draft or Final Draft

First draft here, because getting that done is an amazing feeling - editing, not so much. Especially because I never feel like I have a real, final, never gonna touch again draft. There's always... something.

Also, since I ignore all the advice about not editing while drafting, my first drafts aren't that bad. I rarely change content, just fix the prose.

I actually will eat up dubcon if it’s in a dark setting that calls for it, i.e. fantasy. I’ll avoid it in contemporary/modern settings bc the real world has enough of that.

I’m not opposed to it, upon reflection my issue with it is that “I can't relate to this trope IRL" but I could say that about most of the tropes on this list so I can’t really explain my hesitance lol.

Yes, but after reflecting I think I’m more interested in the opposite: Feelings without sex because ~angst reasons~ prevent/preclude the sex. Until it all comes out in a fiery explosion of lust! I digress.

The character who thinks they're alone in the world suddenly realizes they have a community of people who have chosen to love and care for them. Gets me every fucking time.

🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.

I love to fuck around with tropes. I have a lot of fun taking ideas that have been done to death and finding new stories to tell with them. The Soul Meets Body series happened because I wanted to write an mpreg fic that faced all the problems with that trope head-on, and Joseph Campbell, Eat Your Heart Out takes the genderswapping trope and puts it in the context of folklore and fairytales.

I don't really do fics that are just sweet. I like to write sweet moments in bigger stories, and stories that are mostly sweet still have little bursts of bitterness. The most heartwarming thing I've ever written might be Gemini, because Skywalker sibling feels.

🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?

Whatever it is you get out of fic and fandom, take it and then take more. You want to develop your skills as a writer? Work with good betas and challenge yourself. You want to indulge kinks, work through trauma, or escape from the world? Write whatever kinky, dead dove, fluffy nonsense you need. You want to write a wildly popular fic? Figure out the formula and do it. We're all here for our own reasons. Whatever your reason is, indulge it.

💞 Who's your comfort character? / 🤩 Who is your favorite character to write?

Combining these two questions, because both answers are dependent on what I want to write and why. Need to grapple with the feeling that the only way to be loved is to be useful? I'm gonna write Clint Barton. Want to explore the desire to be recognized and valued as a whole person? Gimme Poe Dameron. Feeling the conflict between living a life of peace and a life of purpose? That's Yusuf al Kaysani. Time for Catholic trauma? Nicolo di Genova, come on down. Gender feelings? Let's see who I want to project onto today. I also love writing any character who might be described as "snarky" or "sarcastic", because the dialogue is always fun and the whump is delightful.

Of all the things Joe expected to watch change in his unusually long lifetime, the fucking weather wasn’t on the list. Nor would he have expected global weather patterns to have quite as much effect on his daily life as they did. Decades of desperate environmental action had begun to curb the effects of climate change, but natural disasters continued to arrive with alarming frequency and unimaginable destruction. The wealthier parts of the world could get by with little permanent damage, but many places, like the cluster of mountain villages in northern India where the team was currently stuck, faced a dire situation.

✅ What's something that appears in your fics over and over and over again, even if you don't mean to?

Trans-masc gender dysphoria, apparently. Complicated gender relationships, in general. As you can imagine, it's something I think about a lot.

I’ve been into age gaps ships but not necessarily into the age gap aspect. It’s not something that bothers me or something I seek out in particular.

I prefer pairings that consist of two individuals who want to be together, rather than need to be.

Enemies to lovers: 0/10

I prefer ‘mild mutual antipathy’ to lovers or ‘minor misunderstanding leading to mild dislike’ to lovers tbh.

Enemies With Benefits: -100/10

I do not vibe with any kind of hate sex. Why are you sleeping with someone you don’t like? I just don’t get it.

Fake Dating/Relationship: 10/10

Yes please gimme. I’m going to need some pining on the side, please and thank you.

Found Family: 10/10

I need the dysfunctional would never describe themselves as a family, found or otherwise, sort though.

Friends To Lovers: 100/10

Absolutely bulletproof. Give me every version under the sun.

Friends With Benefits: 100/10

Again absolutely bulletproof. Give me ‘we can handle the awkwardness, we can handle the feelings, right?’ And then them being spectacularly wrong.

Hurt/Comfort: 100/10

Yes. Just yes. Give me all the whump, all the wound tending, all the bedside vigils, all the deep seated trauma surfacing and finally finding safety. All of it.

I think this can be interesting but I need more than just that, like it has to have an element of ‘they think they’re opposites but actually they have this huge thing in common and just reacted differently and can learn from each other’.

Absolutely, although I probably enjoy a smutty one shot type version more than a long fic, where I tend to find all the negotiation etc tedious to read even though in real life it’s absolutely necessary.

In terms of people who missed their moment with each other, yes absolutely. Getting back with someone who hurt you? Nah.

Yes.

Slowburn: 10/10

But there has to be a reason for it to be so slow. And my preferred reason is mutual trauma. DNW a series of increasingly tenuous obstacles and misunderstandings. I need internal conflict easing one tiny fleeting brush of fingers at a time.

Soulmates: -10/10

Not really. I hate anything to do with fate or pollen made them do it or whatever, I want people to choose to be together and I find soulmates usually comes in a package with a bunch of stuff that doesn’t interest me, like declarations about love rather than showing they work together as people.

A lot of these really depend. I don't have any hard Nos, except for MCD and unhappy endings, maybe, and my preferences are very, very fluid. It all depends on if I know and trust the writer, if the overall plot looks appealing and what I'm in the mood for. So most these should be taken with a grain of salt!

I've read some wild discourse on it and it, but I really don't care at the end of the day. 😅

Some of my favorite fics, I LOVE myself some toxic stuff when it's well written.

See above. Yesss, gimme that. When one character tells the other "You're mine" I go weak in the knees.

Love to see it if it fits the dynamic of the pairing. It can be so funny!

Hrrrgh, the dichotomy of it all. The banter, the hate-fucking, the shocking realization that they've caught Feelings(TM). What's not to love?

Love myself some good smut. And if feelings gradually creep in and they need to navigate that? Hell, yeah!

Probably wouldn't click on it if it's the main point of the story or if I stumbled upon it in the wild, but if written by an author I know and like, I'd very much give it a try.

Friends to lovers: + 6 Not as good as enemies to lovers, but still some nice potential for angst and drama.

Big yes if well written, I do love some good whump and caretaking after. Bit risk of veering into OOC territory imho, though.

I usually wanna read about my specific OTP being disgustingly in love with each other, so I don't tend to like it when other characters are brought in. Again, there's some excellent fics with that trope, too.

Mistaken/hidden identity: 0 Needs to be well written, bc it can get old real quick if the reveal takes too long.

Monsterfucking: +1,000,000 Ummmm, helloooo? Yeah? I'm the one who wrote the 100k dragon porn fic, OF COURSE I LIKE MONSTERFUCKING!! 😅😅

Pregnancy: 0 Another one I probably wouldn't read for the sole reason of the tag, but might well look into if the plot sounds interesting.

Second Chance: + 5 Excellent potential for angst and pining, but you'll have to promise me that it'll end happy! 😅💖

Slowburn: + 10 YESSSS! The gradual shift in feelings, the realizations, the longing, the pure BLISS when they finally get it together and KISSSSS!!!!

Soulmates: + 8 I love the different concepts around that trope, there's some really cool and interesting stuff out there!
