I'm currently (finally) reading Gillian Hutchinson's book on the Franklin Expedition, and I think the biggest surprise so far has been finding out that Erebus and Terror were approximately the same length and beam as Pride of Baltimore II, the schooner I sailed up the East Coast of the USA on this summer.*
Pride sails with a crew of 18 (guest + professional crew combined). Erebus and Terror carried a combined total of 129 men on their fatal final voyage.
Tumblr media
...is now an appropriate time to say "I know it smelled crazy in there"?
Tumblr media
*Erebus and Terror each had an orlop deck/hold, which Pride doesn't, but since Pride had lots of storage space under the sole boards, I think the main difference there is that the engines wouldn't have taken up part of the deck people were living on.

you’ve gotten me very interesting in the history of the terror, do you have any book recommendations?
Hi there, I'm happy to hear that! These 3 books are what I consider to be a good introduction to the Franklin Expedition:
Tumblr media
Gillian Hutchinson Sir John Franklin's Erebus and Terror Expedition: Lost and Found (2017)
This one is great to read first. It gives a history of North West Passage expeditions, a transcription of the Erebus & Terror muster lists, and many wonderful pictures of the FE items in the NMM's collection. It was published to coincide with the 'Death in the Ice' exhibition at the NMM, Hutchinson was a curator there.
Tumblr media
Owen Beattie & John Geiger Frozen in Time: The Fate of the Franklin Expedition, (first edition 1987, this edition 2004)
This one is good to read as your second book. It's a written account of the exhumation of the 3 men buried on Beechey Island in early 1846. Some of the theories have been debunked, but it's still a fascinating book. You can see the documentary here.
Tumblr media
David C. Woodman Unravelling the Franklin Mystery: Inuit Testimony (first edition 1991, this edition 2020)
As the title suggests, this book attempts to reconstruct what happened to the Franklin Expedition through analysing testimonies collected from Inuit, the people on whose land the Franklin Expedition perished.

🌸 April books 🌸
Yeah, not beating the allegations...
🔹 Second in Command by May Fluhman, 2⭐
I'm sure this was really useful back in the 1970s, although I'm not sure how much of a wider audience it actually reached. Now, when you can read accounts of the voyages online it really doesn't add much.
🔹 The Dive by Stephen McGinty, 4⭐
An account of rescuing people from a submersible accident. What they wanted to do with that Titanic sub, except 50 years earlier and in much shallower water. Even so, it nearly ended in disaster. If you want a stressful read about how dangerous accidents are caused by a combination of hubris and bad luck, this is a good option.
🔹 Sir John Franklin's Erebus and Terror Expedition by Gillian Hutchinson, 5⭐
🔹 The Plaster Fabric by Martyn Goff, 4⭐
This was a rec from @carrotcakecrumble. A queer classic coming of age novel where Laurie 2, as we're calling him, had to make choices about how he's going to live his life. The two Lauries have so much in common that I can't believe this isn't a response to The Charioteer. Perhaps a criticism, perhaps a look at how it would play out for someone from a different class. Much to think about.
This is a great introduction for anyone who wants to look at the actual history of the Franklin Expedition. There are amazing photos of the wrecks too. My precious boaties ♥️

You may have answered this before but I'm curious about your research process for TSK. what kinds of sources did you use while writing it?
Oh boy - SO. MANY. BOOKS.
I have a list of resources in my author's note at the end of the novel, but here's a short list of some of the books I read for research:
Erebus: The Story of a Ship – Michael Palin.
May we be Spared to Meet on Earth: Letters of the Lost Franklin Expedition – Potter, Koellner, Carney, and Williamson.
Sir John Franklin’s Erebus and Terror Expedition: Lost and Found – Gillian Hutchinson.
Frozen in Time – Owen Beattie and John Geiger.
The Wager – David Grann.
Madhouse at the End of the Earth – Julian Sancton.
Fatal Passage – Ken McGoogan.
After the Lost Franklin Expedition – Peter Baxter.
There's also some academic papers I got my hands on that I'm unable to list here off the cuff, but they're mentioned in my author's note.
I spent time combing over old ordnance maps, too, from various parts of London over the era the book is set, for writing Harry's London-based chapters. I live in London too so it was very funny walking the streets, and referring to the old maps, to see how streets and buildings changed and getting the correct addresses and such for my characters (even going so far as being able to have Harry's boss tell him 'there's a chemist on Cheyne Row' and that be 100% accurate haha)
I also practically lived in the Greenwich Maritime Museum, and climbed the rigging of the Cutty Sark for additional research...and also totally just because I wanted to.
All in all, a looooot has gone into this book!
Thank you for asking ;-; <3

Totally Youthful Tuesday
Tumblr media
In Pender, when a kid goes missing in October, its blamed on a monster in the marshes. The Mumbler. Clara doesn’t believe that’s true. But, while she doesn’t believe in the monster, there are definitely kids that are missing, and so she does believe that there’s something going on in Pender, Maine.
This novel was a fun combination of a lot of different things. Halloween (the feeling of it really came through in the text), urban legends, and teenagers in a small town (which at least in fiction can make teens do weird things). It was another slow burn of a thriller (this week seems to be the week for them), and the author did it really well. The characters again were great, and not exactly the same sort of characters that are seen in the most popular other YA books. It was a fun (and chilling) read.
You may like this book If you Liked: Lost in the Never Woods by Aiden Thomas, Howl by Shaun David Hutchinson, or Secrets So Deep by Ginny Myers Sain

I have tried to include every woman that either of them have canonically gone on a date with, had significant romantic feelings for, or hooked up with - some had to be left out due to technicalities (sorry Lisa), lack of character (Dandruff), or lack of first-person information (Lady Blue).

Yay, I’m glad you didn’t mind my addition on the Franklin post! I can literally talk about the FE for at least an hour.
A book that isn’t on that google drive but that covers the searches for Franklin is Finding Franklin: The Untold Story of a 165-Year Search by Russell A. Potter.
I also completely forgot about Sir John Franklin’s Erebus and Terror Expedition by Gillian Hutchinson, which should be on the linked post. It’s almost like a picture book, so it’s easy to read and quite accessible for beginners.
oh my gosh i didnt mind at all! i very much enjoyed it, since i'm still kind of a rookie historian and don't have as wide-ranging knowledge as some other people on here do (and now i have some more books to read!). i also really appreciated that you added the bit about "ice ghosts" because i hadn't heard that criticism of the book and paul watson before. tysm again!

Conservative says voters care more about attacking trans kids than anything else
Michael Knowles — The Daily Wire broadcaster who called for eradicating “transgenderism” and who once played a gay twink in a movie — says that the 2024 Republican presidential candidates should focus on transgender kids rather than “bread and butter, dinner table issues” that voters actually care more about. In a recent broadcast, Knowles — who believes that all demons are trans, “hypnosis porn” turns adult men into trans women, and egg donation is slavery — said that Republican presidential candidate former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson is doing badly in national polls rights now because he “said that he would trans the kids.” Knowles doesn’t explain his claim, but he may be referring to Hutchinson vetoing a law banning gender-affirming care for trans minors in 2021. The legislature overrode his veto and the ban became law anyway. Related: Michael Knowles wants mass arrests at Pride events if Boebert is charged in “Beetlejuice” groping The conservative pundit called on conservative DAs to arrest drag queens and Pride parade participants for “perverse and unnatural” behavior. “What we’re being told by all the genius GOP consultants is we’ve got to turn away from the culture war issues. We’ve got to focus in on the bread-and-butter dinner table issues. No one wants to hear about ‘transing the kids’ or anything like that,” Knowles said. Get the Daily Brief The news you care about, reported on by the people who care about you: Subscribe to our Newsletter “That is the issue that was decisive in this case. That is the issue that destroyed Asa Hutchinson’s career,” he continued, offering no evidence to support his claim. “That is the issue that got Glenn Younkin (R) elected governor in Virginia…. That is one of two issues that made [Florida Gov.] Ron DeSantis (R) the number two guy in the presidential race, having been relatively unknown just a few years ago.” “This is not just some fringe online thing. Transing the kids resonates nationwide and motivates people to go out and vote,” he concluded. He’s wrong. An April Fox News poll showed that, among registered voters, transgender issues ranked 14th among the “most important issues facing the country today.” The economy, cost of living, gun violence, political extremism, corruption, national security, immigration, climate change, crime, racism, abortion, homelessness, and healthcare all ranked much higher. Fox News poll of registered voters in April https://t.co/eoCwJZibZE pic.twitter.com/s9SwC3kINx— Gillian Branstetter (@GBBranstetter) September 26, 2023 Also, while DeSantis has become infamous for banning gender-affirming care for minors and banning trans-inclusive policies in schools, his popularity in the media resulted more from his opposition to the school and business shutdowns, mask mandates, and vaccination requirements during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Conservatives widely praised his opposition to the cautious approach of White House COVID-19 advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, although Florida was also among the states with his highest number of COVID-19 infections and deaths. Also, it’s terrible advice to tell other candidates to follow DeSantis’ transphobia seeing as DeSantis has consistently trailed fellow candidate and former President Donald Trump in national polls by margins of up 25% to 48%. That is, DeSantis is currently losing the race by a lot, and Knowles wants others to follow him. Trump, on the other hand, hasn’t made trans youth a central plank in his presidential campaign either. If anything, he has gained more popularity by constantly antagonizing his political enemies and casting himself as a perpetual victim of a left-wing “witch hunt.” http://dlvr.it/SwnW2L
