Will: I would want to live with no legs. 

Gilan: How about no arms? No arms or legs is basically how you exist right now, Will. You don’t do anything. 

Crowley: All right, well, let's get back to it. ‘Cause you’re losing him. 

Gilan: *pumps frantically* 

Crowley: Okay, too fast. You need to pump at a pace of 100 beats per minute. 

Gilan: Okay, that’s uh, hard to keep track. How many is that per hour? 

Halt: How’s that gonna help you? 

Gilan: I will divide and then count to it. 

Halt: Right. 

Crowley: Okay. Well, a good trick is to pump to the tune of ‘Staying Alive’ by the Bee Gees. Do you know that song? 

Gilan: Yes, yes I do. I love that song. *clears throat, begins to sing* First I was afraid, I was petrified.

Random little Halt headcanon I had for you guys.

So we all know how in Ruins of Gorlan Will's first impression of Halt is that is is 'old, scary and might kill me' right?

Another well known fact is that if you do the math for this series (which I 100% recommend you don't and instead spend all of your time ignoring both the timeline and character's ages) that Halt can't be older than 35.

Well this got me thinking how on earth does he have salt and pepper hair while being 35? And while yes I do know of people who start greying in their early 20's because of genes and stuff but like that is to boring for my hyperactive brain.

What you may or may not know is that vitamin B12 affects hair greying and pigmentation (at least I think this is in no way a total fact) so what if Halt was just really deficient in vitamin B12?

I don't know how they would've figured this out in medieval times and with their limited knowledge of medicine and stuff but just roll with me here.

Being deficient in B12 also can lead to mood swings and chronic tiredness so i like to think that during his childhood in Dun Kilty Halt was just always grumpy and tired but then he met Pritchard and Crowley and they were like 'you do realise this is because of a vitamin deficiency right?'

Obviously they helped him get sorted out or whatever and I for the first time in his live he felt what it was like to not be extremely tired ALL THE TIME and it was the most comical thing ever! Like his whole face probably lit up and he was like "I feel alive!?"

I love the idea that this was a really popular campfire story for several years and also the story the renegade rangers told Gilan and Will when they first became apprentices mainly to explain that no, halt is not old just vitamin deficient.

It was a whole thing when Will became an apprentice because Gilan kept telling him that all of Halt's grey hairs were because Gilan stressed him out so much during his apprenticeship (Something he would've been VERY proud of were it true) but Crowley stepped in and told him the truth.

So Halt was a royal, right? Surely he knew at least SOMETHING about sword fighting. He would have been toasted in bk 7 anyways if he didn’t. So hear me out, when he took Gilan in as his apprentice they sparred with wooden swords, and Gilan figured he’d have it easy, cause y’know, rangers aren’t usually swordsmen. Until Halt pulls out all of the fancy cuts, thrusts, feints, etc. Gilan gets humbled real fast and is just SHOOK that he got his ass beat by Halt in a Spar.

On another note, I like to think Halt doesn’t bother with swords because they remind him too much of his past etc, etc.

Ranger Gathering 2024 - 5. Alone

He came back alone and he left the kids alone. Also: I love drawing angry Halt.

I would really like to remind everyone that it’s canon (we didn’t make this up. We didn’t have to make this up Flanagan made it canon for us) that everyone just. Accepts that Will is Halt’s son. Gilan says that even though he and Halt will always be close, Halt and Will’s relationship is much closer and is father & son like. Pauline treats Will as her son. Horace sees Will as his brother and Halt as his uncle. Everyone sees Will and Halt and are like “this man. This man has adopted a child” which is so funny to me because imagine you’re in araluen and you see Greybeard halt who never smiles with his happy son who doesn’t shut up (AND they’re the same height). Flanagan does a lot wrong in the series but making Halt see Will as his son and the found family aspects are NOT one

Every now and then I think of that moment when Cassandra (or it might have been Alyss, I can’t remember) made a comment on how someone could set up a trap for a ranger just by using coffee as bait and Gilan’s response was “and we’d go gladly”. I think of it and think “haha what a funny joke”.

But then I remember how Halt was more offended by the fact that Ferris doesn’t like coffee than the fact that Ferris tried to kill him on multiple occasions. And he was certainly more bothered by the coffee thing than the fact that Ferris stole his birthright.

Or when Will was so ready to kill an innkeeper because the guy didn’t feel like brewing a pot of coffee for him.

I realize just how much Gilan wasn’t joking, is what I’m saying.
