Bad Lucille (named after BB King's guitar), some ten years ago with John on vocals and guitar; Joe Betts on bass and vocals; Dave Holland (now of @jadiband2017) on guitar and myself on my trusty Pearl Rhythm Traveler drums - my original black set. We were playing a gig at the old Phoenix Theatre cafe, now called the Sue Townshend Theatre. Our blues/rock set went down a treat as always. Hilarious moment when a worthy old blues guy decided to give us a solid put down. Really put us in our place. He made the mistake of speaking to me. "You're just too tight to be a blues band," he said. "Blues bands are sloppy." Concealing a smirk I replied "Thanks mate that's a real compliment. We've only been together a short time so for you to say we're tight is great. Thanks." He didn't look very happy; he looked confused. Almost like he was thinking "But you're meant to be insulted." House kits can be a sore subject with drummers. Unless you see photos you never really know what you’re getting. The musical equipment equivalent of a blind date.

I’ve played a few over the last few months. The one @the_sound_house is good - I’ve played it a lot over the last few months and enjoyed it immensely. I’ve used the house hardware and stool which is perfectly serviceable but prefer my own. Have always added my snare and cymbals. Have sometimes used the excellent sound engineer’s too - Ollie Petch, another drummer. That kit’s a Yamaha.

The kit at the Heather Music Festival was good too - sounded fine and came with a decent throne. Best part was it cost the organisers nothing. I think it’s a Stagg kit - a “Tim”? Not 100% on that. It sounded good with my usual refinements - my Luddy Acrolite snare and Sabian AAXplosion cymbals.

My conclusion? You have to make the best music with what you’ve got. Bit like a blind date really.

A confession. In retrospect I have realised this photo may not in fact be of myself playing triplet builds which I described last post. I suspect this was taken during the verses of “I’m Ready”, the first song of Chris’s set. I remember Dave Holland taking pictures on his mobile during the song. In which case I would be pounding out dramatic, over blown unison accents on snare and floor tom instead. Not that I didn't play any triplet builds - they would have been in abundance during the whole set as they are a staple of blues drumming. I read of them being referred to as “straights” in Daniel Glass's book on Early R&B Drumming and there's plenty of variations - I know ‘cos I play ‘em all. So accents not straights on snare and floor tom. Been meaning to show this off for a while... my personalised cymbal bag from @protectionracket. Personalised my @r$e. After twenty years of lugging around a Hardcase cymbal case , I decided to get a Protection Racket cymbal case instead and this was the cheapest I could find on ebay. Even got a refund on the listed price when it turned up with a cheaper price tag on it! Hmm. It's just nice to tell everyone is personalised - sometimes they even believe me. My favoured brushes for live work - for the last ten years or so - have been the Vic Firth Live Wires. To quote - "A retractable wire brush featuring heavy gauge wire with a small, round bead on the tip of each strand. For an added sharp snap on cymbals and drums. - from vicfirth.com. This is purely a volume thing. Given the choice I prefer the Heritage Brush - I play much more expressively with them. So this time I decided to use them to play a whole gig. I’m so pleased I did. The experience was far more satisfying. The vintage set of Ludwig brushes were very similar to play. The only thing I do need to do is fix the heritage so they have a narrower spread, which the Ludwigs already have.
