To know where we are, and to know where we are going, we need to know where we began. Too often, we forget our true origin; we forget that the story of humanity did not begin with the fall. Our story started with the image of God. Beauty. Wonder. Life. This is what God has placed at the core of our being. Nothing can change our identity as children of God, declared so emphatically at the cross. Sin is a stain upon the fabric; it is not the fabric itself. We were made for good and, despite the fall, we retain that shining potential. The fullness of life that Christ offers us isn’t about running away from our humanity, it’s about running back into it – it’s about reconnecting with who we were created to be.

Sabbath poem
Blessed are the ones who say no. Blessed are the ones who think that living is ambition enough. Blessed are the simple, the gentle, the unsung. Heaven tastes bitter to the overachiever. It belongs to the children, and to the ones who despite the gnawing aspiration of years have not forgotten the truth. Blessed are the ones who walk slowly, who would get distracted by a daisy, who would rather climb a tree than a ladder.

Biography
Backstory
Enira's origin and birthplace is certainly from the Lands Between. It is known that her biological parents were tarnished as well and that they were robbed of their grace.
After being abandoned in a tower’s doorstep, Enira was raised by a well knowing sorcerer, and grew up to become an excellent astrologer and a good warrior.
As grew up, Enira was admired and beloved in her lands, as she was fighting for the good of people and justice. She was always giving supplies and food to the poor people and she was sacrificing herself in battles and wars, until one day when she was called to the Lands Between.
Enira was chosen by Grace to become a tarnished, so she crossed the fog and came back to her birthplace, the Lands Between. With the command to become Elden Lord, gather all the great runes of the demigods and find Queen Marika, her journey had just begun.
Beginning
When Enira first enters the lands between, she finds herself in the bridge of anticipation. She is forced to fight a spidery grafted monster, until the ground beneath her collapses and she falls down, into a hidden tunnel, where she is found by a mysterious girl atop her horse.
Enira enters, first encounters and meets the Lands Between from the southern region of Limgrave. In there she travels stops in variant locations such as ruins, caves and catacombs to find treasures and encounters enemies, such as knights or monsters, whom she fights with her magic being her one and loyal weapon. Enira is constantly attacked by foes, humans and monsters but she manages to overcome struggles and defeat them.
Limgrave
When Enira reaches the walls of the most known and important place in Limgrave, the Stormveil castle, she is approached by the known mysterious girl, who introduces herself as Melina. Melina offers Enira an accord, to take her along in her journey as her finger maiden and to escort her into the base of the Erdtree, the sacred tree, afar from Limgrave. Enira accepts the offer and promises to take Melina with her and Melina happily offers her her spectral steed, Torrent, with which Enira gets to ride with, throughout her journeys.
After she learns about her mission and accords she encounters many new faces and many new friends, a witch sent by Melina to give her a spirit calling bell, a young girl named Roderika, whom she takes under her protection and an Iron Fist named Alexander. And most importantly she gets to be taught in sorceries arts by a fabulous sorceress named Sellen.
When Enira falls into a trap and gets locked away in the distant lands of Caelid, Melina offers her one more guidance, a safe place for all the Tarnished to be gathered, the Roundtable Hold. When Enira arrives encounters more closest friends to her, Brother Corhyn, Master Heugh, Fia Deathbed Companion,  Sir Gideon Offnir D, hunter of the dead and the Knight Diallos. Not long after Roderika arrives to the Hold, with the help of Enira; she becomes a well capable spirit tuner and a close friend to Enira.
Enira gets to spend some more days in Limgrave, where not only she makes great discoveries but also gets to encounter many people and new friends. One of them is Patches, who at first fought him but eventually they made peace. In the end though, Patches keeps tricking her and putting her into various traps and trouble.
In one of Enira’s journeys, she encounters a young blind girl named Irina, who claimed to have escaped from the Castle Morne, a place where the servants rebelled. Irina asks Enira to deliver a letter to her father, the lord of the castle, for which Enira agrees to. Enira delivers the letter to Irina's father in the castle, defeats the great enemy in there, until she finds Irina killed and her father weeping over her. This devastates, marks Enira's heart and gives her the highest motivation to save this world from evil. She decides that she must find her destiny, gather all the runes and find all the demigods that hold them.
Enira heads back to the Stormveil Castle where she fights Margit the Fell Omen, walks through the castle where meets another sorcerer friend, Rogier and eventually reaches and fights the first demigod and shardbearer, Godrick the Grafted. After a restless battle between them and struggling she finally defeats him with her magic and she heads to the Divine Tower to gain his Great Rune and her first great rune.
After she gains the Great Rune of Godrick she becomes more respected and adored in the Roundtable Hold and she gets much closer to her friends, who deeply admire her. But now that Enira became a more powerful sorceress everyone starts to expect more of her and ask her favours. Sir Gideon gives her more information about the Demigods that hold the tunes so she arranges her next plans. Fia and Roderika start to get more closer to Enira and they feel her like a family member of theirs.
Enira and Knight Diallos seem to be romantically interested in each other but the current missions and current conflicts do not allow them to develop a full relationship.

Luirnia of the Lakes
After her journeys and trips in Limgrave she moves to the northern lakeside lands of Luirnia, her destination being the Academy of Raya Lucaria. There, she meets another sorcerer friend, Thops and a giant turtle pastor named Miriel with whom she discovers even more about Carian and Glinstone sorceries to use for her future battles.
On her way to the lake she also meets a rude fellow boil prawn man and a young mysterious girl named Rya whom she helps. Rya sees the abilities and properties of Enira and invites her to the Volcano Manor, to have an audience with her lady. Enira is given an invitation and Rya invites her to the Altus Plateau, Grand Lift of Dectus.
Enira finds a key to the Academy of Raya Lucaria and when she enters, she finds more and various sorcery scrolls and spells. She is informed that the next rune keeper, Queen Rennala of the Full Moon, resides there so she begins to prepare herself for this upcoming battle.
When Enira gallops through Liurnia she finds Diallos weeping over the body of a woman. She learns that the woman Diallos was looking for, Lanya was killed by some recusants.
After this incident, Diallos struggles with the pain of Lanya’s loss but Enira tries to support him and remains there for him. This, although a dark twist of fate brings them even more closer.
One day, Enira is requested to go and erase a flaming sphere floating above a tower in a village and when she rides to it, she witnesses for the first time, the Frenzied Flame, which maddens whoever sees it. Enira completes her mission but she returns to the Roundtable Hold, tortured with weak eyesight, endless headaches and illusions. It is Corhyn who heals her but this flame gives Enira restless nightmares.
In Between Adventures
Enira gets informed that in the horrific and sickening lands of Caelid there are various important treasures that she can find, so she heads towards it and searches for them. Although the place is filled with nothing but horrors and the rotting sickness of Scarlet Rot she proceeds and gets through the place and finds those treasures.
A particular mage named Gowry asks Enira to save a young girl named Millicent, a girl suffering from Scarlet Rot and she eventually agrees. She fights Commander O' Neil, takes the needle needed for Millicent's sickness and heals her, which gives her one more close friend.
In the Roundtable Hold, Fia asks Enira a favour, to deliver a dagger to D, to which she agrees. But soon Enira discovers that this dagger was a death throning trap for him, which eventually ends up killing him. When Enira discovers what she had done, killing an innocent man, falls to her knees and cries in remorse.
Enira discovers a medallion to enter the northern areas of Altus Plateau through the Grand Lift of Dectus, where she encounters Rya. Rya takes her by teleportation to the Volcano Manor and there, Enira meets Rya's lady, Lady Tanith. Tanith gives her the opportunity to join the Volcano Manor and take part in a war against the Erdtree. Enira, remembers what she had done to D because of her naïve agreement to Fia so she denies the request and leaves the Manor.
For a short time she visits and wanders around the areas of Altus Plateau to discover new treasures, but the stories and the past of these lands bring her nothing but sadness and sorrow. A sorrow that hides deeply inside of her and that grows bigger by the passing of time.
When she gets fully prepared she heads back to the Academy of Raya Lucaria and she fights with Queen Rennala, claiming her rune. Even though defeated, Rennala was still alive in her room, in the same depressed state and Enira questioned her actions and reasonings every time when it came to Rennala’s remembrance.
The merchant friend of hers, Kalé, tells her that in the Mistwoods a wolf's howling is heard constantly. Kalé tells her the way to call him to her and when Enira visits the place she meets a half man and half wolf warrior man named Blaidd. The two of them immediately become friends and she agrees to help him in a fight of his. Blaidd seems to like Enira and her company and hopes to see her again.
Service to Ranni
Enira heads from Luirnia to Caria Manor and heads through the misty castle of blue crystals and lights, where she encounters foes and enemies alike. She defeats a royal knight spirit named Loretta and she meets the same mysterious doll witch that gave her the spirit calling bell who introduces herself as Ranni the Witch. Ranni tells her that she has stolen death long ago and that now searches for the dark path and offers her the chance to serve her. Enira instantly agrees and enters her service. Ranni, after finding a strong minded spirit in Enira, tells her to cooperate with her other servants, Blaidd, a war counselor named Iji and a sorcerer named Seluvis and all of them to search for the hidden treasure of Nokron. Enira trusts Blaidd and Iji in this but she detests Seluvis, especially when she finds his secret chambers where he holds lifeless and motionless puppets whom he uses for his own purpose. Enira, when discovers his monstrous actions tricks him and buys one of his puppets, planning to bring them back to life into their bodies in the future. At first she hands the puppet of a finger maiden, Therolina and she returns her spirit inside her body. Therolina thanks her and requests her to become her finger maiden. Enira though, having a maiden already takes her to the Roundtable hold where she shall find her new Lord someday.
Enira and Blaidd begin their journey to find the eternal city of Nokron. In there, they both notice that they can clearly see the city above them, floating in the sky but cannot reach it.
After Enira talks to Seluvis about this topic, with the help of Sellen discovers that in order to reveal the way of Nokron they must bring back the order of the starts and free the fate of Mistress Ranni. By doing so, they must defeat General Radahn and free the stars from his holds. Blaidd tells Enira that there is a festival held in the Redmane Castle in Caelid, where great champions will all be gathered to fight General Radahn and invites her there, to take part in the fight as well.
Enira, after getting fully prepared for the Festival, reaches the Redmane Castle and encounters Blaidd there. She also encounters Alexander, the iron fist and the finger maiden Therolina. She is told the story of General Radahn and she gets to take part in the battle. When all of the champions reach the battlefield of General Radahn, they encounter a restless powerful huge warrior. In the battle Enira takes the active role, to cast her strongest sorceries on him atop Torrent and she is the one to be striking the most effective shots. During the battle though, Enira is brutally attacked by Radahn's shots and a spear of his actually punctures her whole chest. Blaidd, gives Enira courage, heals and revives her back, and so Enira continues fighting with everything she has left. She is the one to now encourage the champions to fight harder and her own shot finishes the battle. After Radahn is defeated a shot of shooting stars is seen in the sky above them.
After their victory, Enira returns to Caelid where her friend Millicent tells her that she needs to take back her mechanical arm in order to follow her purpose and fight. Enira searches for this particular arm of Millicent's inside a chest of a castle, near mount Gelmir but she gets poisoned by the waters and the scarlet flowers that fill her body with scarlet rot.
The sickness of Scarlet Rot torments Enira for days in the Roundtable Hold. The pain, the red vomiting and nightmares of hers not only did great damage in her body in her but also in her soul. Her hair started to fall, her skin became pale and dry and she got dark circles under her eyes. She changed so much that feared to reveal her face to anyone, therefore starts to wear a hood over her face. In order to be cured she needed to proceed with a painful flaming treatment with the help of Corhyn.
Eventually, after her recovery, she receives a message by Blaidd to free him from an Evergol prison that he was trapped into. When Enira encounters him and frees him he tells her that Iji trapped him in and when he sees her state, he gets worried for her and offers her to escort her in Nokron.
Enira returns to her mission and she heads to the crater, of the star that struck Lingrave after the battle with Radahn. She reaches the Eternal city of Nokron and encounters Blaidd. In there she is forced to face the most difficult enemy that she has ever faced: A mimic of herself. When she fights her own self she has to fight not only her own achievements and spells but also the silver tongue that she uses against her enemies, now used against her. This makes her face some of her own weaknesses but the easy process of defeating her makes her realise that maybe she is way weaker than what she may think. When she talks to Blaidd about this they start an opening conversation about their shared stories, which brings them closer. Enira eventually finds the hidden treasure of Nokron and delivers it to Ranni. Ranni thanks Enira for her efforts and rewards her but then also sees the current state of hers and tells her the story of her stepsister Malenia who suffered a lifetime of Scarlet Rot and convinces her that the sickness cannot really change who she is but only the state of her body.
After that, Enira visits Iji and confronts him about what he did to Blaidd. Iji explains to Enira the connection that Ranni and Blaidd have from the Two Fingers and the dangers that he can emerge through himself and Ranni.
Arrival in Leyndell
After Enira's achievements she decides to fulfil her ever first mission, her mission to Melina. She reaches and enters Leyndell, the royal capital where a demigod, Morgot and his rune are located. When she reaches it she faces a larger place of depressing stories that make her feel nothing but sorrow but she still proceeds through her enemies and keeps up. When she reaches Morgot and defeats him, with the help of Melina, she discovers that all this time, her dear friend Melina wanted her to escort her to the Erdtree so that she would sacrifice herself to burn it down. Enira, when discovers that Melina sought her help for her own demise breaks down and she tells her that she will consider the continue of her journey, that was almost coming to an end. Melina tells her that she shall be waiting for her, until she is ready to fulfil her duty.
Later
After the discovery of Melina's destined fate Enira runs away from her duties and she proceeds in helping one of her friends, her teacher Sellen. But the more she helps her, the more her life begins to be ruined. In the end, Sellen dies after Rennala kills her. This makes her so guilty that wipes away her will to help others by the fear of hurting them.
Enira is informed that Blaidd is located in the city of Nokstrela. There, she finds a Ranni's miniature doll which actually speaks to her. She proceeds on many and various missions that Ranni tells her about, such as defeating dreadful shadows and her enemies until Enira actually saves Ranni and gives her back her Dark moon ring. For this she earns Ranni's eternal gratitude and kindness.
When she pays Blaidd a visit she finds him hostile and maddened, so much that in his fury he actually hurts her. Even so she does not kill him. Enira is so saddened for Blaidd's state that decides to help him and free him from Ranni's bounds, now that her tasks are done. She discovers from Iji that the only way to release Blaidd from his bounds is to fulfil this sorrowful mission of hers and to sacrifice Melina, therefore to burn the Erdtree, so that Blaidd's maddening bounds with the two fingers and his bounds with Ranni will be broken.
The snowfields
Enira is convinced by Melina to do her quest, so she visits the Snowfields and she proceeds with other adventures. In those adventures though the depression grows bigger inside of her, especially when she finds out that a spirit she has been carrying with her, was a spirit of a young girl. She spends days in the endless freezing grounds and she sinks into sadness and misery with no one to support her.
When the time arrives, Enira defeats the Fire Giant of the mountaintops and she is forced to sacrifice Melina and burn the Erdtree. When Melina is burnt along with the Erdtree, Enira breaks down, bursts in tears and she recalls everything she has lost ever since she has become a tarnished. She desperately yells and calls out for the fingers and Marika herself to release her from this burden and she collapses on the freezing ground, while embracing Torrent hoping to die out. But, in there, Ranni finds her and helps her with her mission by taking her to the Volcano Manor in order to claim her next rune.
Service to the Volcano Manor
Enira does not remember how, but she ends up waking up in the Volcano Manor, with her clothes altered and her body exhausted. She encounters Lady Tanith once more and this time, she accepts her request to join the Volcano Manor, hoping this time by going against the Erdtree, she will help this world be fixed. This also, means that maybe she shall gain an opportunity to avenge for everything she has been robbed off since she became a tarnished.
She spends some days in the manor and she changes her appearance by putting more darker makeup on her. She also makes her cheek scar from scarlet rot more visible. She starts to use more weapons, rather that just her magic spells. With her appearance and her ways changed it is her personality that changes as well, but not in the good way. She starts to become enraged, violent, cold, distant and introverted. In the Manor she encounters once again Rya, Patches and Diallos.
Rya reveals herself to be a half serpent and that her real name is Zorayas. This does not change Enira's point of view towards her and Rya trusts and opens up to her. Enira feels like an older sister to her and she promises to Tanith that will protect her and respect her. Even though she creates a bond between them and becomes her protector she still fears to reveal her warmer self to Rya.
Patches starts to enjoy Enira's company ever since she arrived to the manor, though he has tricked her many times in the past. Even so, Enira hides her friendly self deep inside and acts cold heartily and distant towards him.
Diallos, upon meeting Enira again begins to open up to her again and the two of them begin to develop a closer love relationship.
Enira fulfils various missions from letters delivered by the manor and her friends and she defeats 5 in total people of her own kind. Her tactics now seem to start to change and now she even begins to use blood magic towards her enemies. The last tarnished she defeats in the snowing mountaintops, named Juno Hoslow, calls her a "vicious monster" before he draws his last breath. Enira starts then, to realise that she has become a completely different and evil person ever since she had joined the manor. After that battle, when she returns to the manor, Diallos finds her severely injured and bloody in the room and about to pass out so he offers his help and treats her wounds. After that he proves her that he cares about her and that he actually loves her. And for the first time Enira spends a quiet and peaceful night with someone she loves.
During her stay at the Volcano Manor, Enira makes her efforts to become more open and heartwarming towards her new friends but the memories of her past and everything she had lost still haunts her mind. Enira and Diallos spend more days and nights together in the Manor and they share their losses and past demons.
Rya, informs Enira that behind the doors of the manor she can hear distant mysterious voices and of course Enira decides to check it out by entering a hidden labyrinth of the manor. And when she does, she discovers the dark secret of the Volcano Manor, of secret chambers, torture methods and tormented people in cells. Her horror turns out to revive back her old good justiciable self but this time much stronger and with no fears or restrictions. Discovering the truth, she makes the determination to continue her mission and gain her next rune which is now held by Praetor Rykard, Lord of the Volcano Manor, therefore she will then stop the Volcano Manor.
The following days, she gathers supplies and preparations for the big fight that is going to happen to haunt down Rykard. But, eventually, Rya discovers that she was born not by grace as told by her mother but of a horrible curse. In her desperation, Rya pleads her to kill her and end her suffering but Enira breaks down and she tries to explain her that she is important and wonderful just the way she is and that she is a kind and generous soul that she adored. Rya, determined to leave the manor behind for good she leaves a letter to Enira and tells her that she will leave the manor and that she thanks her.
Diallos, after so many moments with Enira, he decides that if he leaves for his next mission he wants her with him, so that they could live and fight together without restrictions or rules.
Enira finds this a new chance for her to escape from her burdens and she agrees to follow him, in this path of his and then, after she gathers supplies to haunt down Rykard. Diallos' mission was to go and defend the living jars in Jarburg, where Alexander is coming from. In there, Enira is beloved and adored by the jars especially by the very little nephew of Alexander. For a specific period of time Enira lives a quiet life in the village, but still remembers that there is a mission for her to continue, to kill Rykard.
Enira goes back to the Volcano Manor, defeats Rykard with a specific weapon given to her and so the Volcano Manor is finished. She says her last goodbye to Patches and she leaves the Manor for good. Then she claims the great rune of Rykard and she has in total 4 great tunes.
After the battle with Rykard, Enira returns to Jarburg and discovers that while she was gone some poachers came and broke the whole jar village and she also finds Diallos, near dying. Moments before his death he tells her that he loves her. Enira spends her moments weeping over him and then, it is when she discovers that the Volcano Manor has actually ordered her to kill his brother, without him or her knowing it before. After she buries him she decides to leave the roundtable hold  for good and to quit her mission that brought her and others nothing but death and pain. When she finds the roundtable burnt down she says her last goodbyes to Roderika and Master Heugh and she leaves the hold for good.
After that Enira heads to the cathedral of Manus Celes, she summons Ranni and tells her to take all of the runes and to hand them to the next tarnished that will take her place. Ranni questions why would Enira do that and she tells her desperately that she cannot stand this anymore, that she is tired and that she is no longer to take care of Marika's messes for claiming a title if it is to cost her everything she has actually cherished in this land. Ranni at first tells her that she understands completely how she feels and that this was the very reason she casted her empyrean flesh away. She agrees that the two fingers being nothing but pain to people and the tarnished but she reminds Enira of all the long way she has walked, all her pain and suffering throughout her labouring mission, claiming that she must not give up now, that her mission is ending. Enira gets mad at Ranni for leaving her so she decides to move in absolute solitude where no one could find her, in the consecrated snowfields.
To the consecrated snowfields
After all of this troubling past she had, Enira now spends her days in the cold in a troubling mind state, mind state of illusions and visions and she is left all alone. As time passes, Enira dresses herself as a black knife so that she is feared throughout the world.
Throughout her journey in the snowing area, Enira keeps hearing voices of her dead loved ones, but they do stop only when she rests on the sites of grace. There is but one single voice she keeps hearing while resting, the voice of a young boy who pleads her to save him. Even though Enira's help will was always clear, she denies his request. Even so, the boy's voice keeps talking to her and he offers her cure for her illusions on the way.
Enira keeps talking to the young boy, being her only company, in the sites of grace, tormented by the cold and the loneliness. After she finishes the request of one friend of hers, Latenna, she arrives in a mysterious abandoned city, where the boy pleads her to open four torches and to open a particular gate. The moment when Enira opens the portal, she realises that she has arrived in a large, tree palace named the Haligtree.
The Haligtree
After Enira arrives to the Haligtree, she understands and realises that the boy's voice is the actual spirit of Miquella, the demigod golden child, son of Marika and cursed to live an eternal childhood. The treehouse that she arrived to, is the very Miquella's Haligtree. Miquella tells Enira that his real body is trapped somewhere in the distant hidden lands and that he needs her, to release him, with the help of his twin sister, Malenia. He suggests that Enira must reason with Malenia and to exchange her great rune, for guiding her back to him. At first Enira tells him that she has abandoned her duty long ago and that she is actually planning to give up her runes somewhere else, but even so Miquella keeps hoping that she will change her mind.
After Enira learns what kind of Demigod Miquella was, how loved he used to be and how he always wanted to cure other people, she understands that this is the chance for her to be the saviour of a defenceless person decides to go and do as he asked.
When Miquella promises a reward to Enira, Enira asks from him an unalloyed spell that will drive out the madness out of her friend Blaidd. To that, Miquella agrees and promises to give it to her so that Blaidd can be saved.
Enira defeats multiple enemies on her path and eventually, with Miquella's voice being heard, to support her on her way and eventually she arrives in the palace of the Haligtree, Elphael.
Elphael and Malenia
When Enira arrives in Elphael, with Miquella's instructions she arrives in the very roots of the Haligtree and she encounters, the twin of Miquella, Malenia who suffered a lifetime of scarlet rot and prosthetic limps, but being an excellent and unbeatable sword maiden. Enira and Malenia fight for a little, this being the most difficult fight of all fights for Enira and eventually, Enira manages to win. When she knocks Malenia out, she removes the blade from her prosthetic hand and she explains her with logic that she can find Miquella for her. Malenia hears her words and she agrees to help her, to eventually find Miquella together and help her in battle as often as she can. So from now on Enira and Malenia become partners in battle.
The Blood Dynasty
While Enira begins her search for Miquella, she takes the advice of Sir. Gideon Offnir who tells her that Miquella's body location is in the beneath grounds, in a particular red blood palace. He says that he was kidnapped by a "blood omen". This blood omen is later revealed to be Mogh.
Although Enira does not understand this at first, in her journeys she encounters the very first person she met in these lands, named Varré.
Enira serves Varré and she goes through variant missions of blood assassinations to actually enter the palace of Mogh. In one of them is is forced to even injure her finger.
After the complete of the blood missions Enira and Malenia visit the Mogwyn palace where Miquella's body is found slumbering within a cocoon. Both women enraged, Enira and Malenia fight Mogh and they release Miquella from his bonds. After Miquella himself is free from his bounds and allowed to return to his slumber, Malenia begs for Enira to come with her in Elphael and to help her restore the Haligtree. Enira, thinking that she has finally found the most capable Elden Lord to restore the peace, agrees to stay but only if, Malenia agrees to hold the great runes for the next tarnished and to help Miquella become Elden Lord.
Before Enira gets her answer from Malenia, the repay she asks from Miquella is to give her a way to cure madness of Blaidd just the way he cured the madness of his sister. Miquella then offers her a needle of his, which could serve this purpose.
To save Blaidd, Enira sends her friend, Millicent to inject the needle to her wolf friend. But in everyone's surprise, Enira actually goes missing in the Elphael Haligtree after her loud scream is heard all over. She is looked for everywhere but she is nowhere to be found.

“Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” —Matthew 3:2 (NLT)
Lent Devotional By Gideon Heugh (Tearfund) - Day 1: “Ash Wednesday – ‘Believing in change’”:
“Is change possible? Can our circumstances change? Can we ourselves change? Can the world change?
Jesus repeats the above call to action from John the Baptist at the start of his ministry (Matthew 4:17). The word ‘repent’ is, in the original Greek, metanoeó. It literally means to change one's mind, purpose, or inner self.
Jesus believed in change. He called us to it. ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Or, to paraphrase: ‘Things don’t have to be this way; Spirit is here – God is on the move.’
Despair says, ‘things will always be this way’; faith is open to the possible.
This is why Tearfund believes practical support must go hand in hand with the spiritual. If a community believes it is stuck, then stuck it will be. But if a community begins to believe in change, then change will not be far behind.
Jesus, Saviour, Healer, Transformer – thank you that your kingdom is at hand. Keep us from despair; open our hearts to the possible. Help us to play our part in the transformation of this world. Amen.”

Even though we’re bombarded by bad news, constant advertisements for the latest thing we should buy; even though we lose our jobs, people leave us and our dreams seem distant; even though we can feel pressed on all sides by anxiety, loneliness and despair; let’s cling fiercely to the fact that we are loved more than we can imagine.

Star
Even though some nights seem anything but Holy,
even though Christmas isn’t always Merry and can leave us feeling lonely,
even though we sometimes fail no matter how hard we try,
even though we seem stuck on the ground when we’re desperate to fly,
even though our faded dreams shake our belief,
even though life can feel agonizingly brief,
even though we lose the people that we love
and we question whether there’s even a heaven above,
even though we take the risk and give ourselves away
but then our hearts break and our hearts break and our hearts break
and we cry out God how long will it take before this dark night will end?
Before the sun rises and the world begins to mend?
Even though from here to redemption couldn’t seem more far
still I’ve heard rumors of a strange star,
shining with an unfamiliar light,
burning with the hope that maybe these wrongs will be put right.
What do you see when you look into your sky?
Darkness? Confusion? Storm clouds thundering the question
Why? Why me? Why now? Why does it have to be this hard?
Why him? Why her? Do I always have to end up scarred?
Look closer.
Even though it may seem faint,
still you will see a star, beckoning you to follow,
promising that though it hurts tonight
something new will be born tomorrow.
Something new will be born,
something new will be born,
everything that’s been broken, shattered and torn will be healed,
hearts will be mended and love’s true face will be revealed.
So even though you’ve fallen, know that you will be restored,
for there is a star in your sky,
pointing towards a savior, guiding you to the Lord.

ENOUGH: DANGEROUS JOY “Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’ (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).” (Matthew 27:46b) Sometimes life can be crushing. It’s important to acknowledge that. It’s okay to be unhappy. It’s okay to weep. Even Jesus shouted at the heavens in anguish. Stare your pain in the face. Name it. Feel it. But then, when your eyes are still raw, say to it, “In spite of you, I am still here. I woke up this morning. Even though things keep knocking me down, I get the chance to stand up again.” Because beyond all of that is a dangerous kind of joy. The kind of joy that perseveres; the kind of joy that changes the world. Resurrection joy. So accept that life is fragile and messy. Then embrace it like never before. Embrace it because you never know when the sky might turn black; embrace it because you never know when a stone might get rolled away. Dear God, thank You for my life – for both the trials and the triumphs. Thank You that I woke up this morning. Thank You that I get to have another go. Thank You that You work all things together for my good. I accept the difficult things in my life. I turn them over to You. I trust in Your plan. Amen. Restore: Devastating beauty Devastating beauty On Friday my hope died. The sky wept itself dark the ground broke apart and all creation cried for the bloodied innocence hammered into a tree. There were whispers of a torn curtain but they didn’t reach my ears or mend my mangled heart or stem the bitter tears as we took the body down. On Saturday we grieved, hiding from the troops whom we’d once believed would be overthrown by the carpenter’s boy, who had preached and fed and healed and was now dead. But then on Sunday – the devastating beauty of that Sunday – when time and space were blown out of shape and angels wrapped in electric grace rolled the impossible away. He is not here they proclaimed for glory had risen our failings were forgiven and the rules of time and space were rewritten as an empty tomb declared: Love is alive. Gideon Heugh, Tearfund

A meditation on Midsummer
It’s Midsummer’s Eve. A time when magic gathers thickly. When light is sugared and warm and the dark has an aura of what-if. The year’s waning begins, but not before the waxing gives one final flourish. There is rumour of God leaping from branch to branch in the greenwood, fay and unpredictable—Christ-as-Puck, weaving spells upon the twilighted. You will be told unconvincingly that it was just a dream. Who knows what you could become when Spirit is in his mood. Who knows what could burn away in Midsummer’s bonfire if you let it. Cast off; leap over; take that twinkle in your eye and run with it. Grace is the Faerie Queen, sultry, seeking, tasting the air to catch the scent of your yearning so she can roll in the grass with it. Go now with hot daring. Go and be transformed.

“For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.” —Isaiah 43:19 (NLT)
Lent Devotional By Gideon Heugh (Tearfund) - Day 3: “Ways in the wilderness”:
“We have all been through times of wilderness. Times of uncertainty, of challenge, of doubt. Times when it has felt as though there wasn’t a way out.
In the Bible, the wilderness is never the end – but it can become a means to an end.
It is not only that God makes a way in the wilderness but that the wilderness is the way.
It is in the wilderness that we learn, grow, let go of what might be holding us back, and take hold of what might take us forward.
That is not to say that the wilderness should be celebrated. Pain and sorrow are real and shouldn’t be turned aside from or covered up. Yet we can take heart from the fact that God is there in the wilderness with us – making ways, creating streams of life, preparing us for something new.
Prayer: God of the wilderness, help us to hold on to hope in times of uncertainty, difficulty, and pain. Thank you that the wilderness itself can become the way. Lead us, God, lead us. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” —Romans 12:2 (NIV)
Lent Devotional By Gideon Heugh (Tearfund) - Day 2: “Renewing our minds”:
“What is the pattern of this world? It might not be possible to know exactly what Paul meant by this, but looking at the world around us, we can discern some of the ‘isms’ that shape it:
Cynicism. Believing that human nature is fundamentally selfish.
Consumerism. Believing that happiness is found in acquiring more things.
Capitalism. Believing that endless economic growth is possible and should be relentlessly pursued.
Individualism. Believing that we should all be self-reliant – responsible for our own lives alone.
This pattern of the world has led to great injustice, destruction, and sorrow.
Let us renew our minds and believe the truth that all humans are made in God’s image. Let us believe in enough, that less is more, and that simple is beautiful. And let us believe in each otherness, connection, and community.
Prayer: Loving God, form our lives into a more beautiful pattern. Renew our minds, so they are shaped by faith, hope, and love. And help us all to bring heaven here. Amen.”

“For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor, a lifetime. Weeping may stay overnight, but there is joy in the morning.”—Psalm 30:5 (CSB)
Lent Devotional By Gideon Heugh (Tearfund) - Day 5: “Look, Look”:
“Each Sunday, we will share a poem with you. Treat this as a Sabbath day. Go slow; be still; be open to what the Holy Spirit might say.
‘A few easy moments taken in the sun;
three small birds blessing me with their songs;
each with their charming particularity;
each showing (and I'd bet my life upon it)
that they are in possession of a soul;
each repeating (and I beg you to listen)
precisely the same refrain:
Look, look, it is spring, it is spring!
Look, look! Life is rising from beneath the ground.
The green river is flowing, the green river is flowing!
It is ready to burst its banks.’
The poem is ©Gideon Heugh, from Rumours of Light.

Blackberries
What does God want with me?
I used to believe it was something grand— seismic, even. It would probably, almost certainly, involve success, and acclaim.
How wonderfully wrong I was.
All I have to do to satisfy heaven’s desire is go and pick blackberries in the rain.

The opportunity before me in every relationship is to unknow what I think I know about the wonder, the mystery, the untold stories of the person before me.

ENOUGH: GOOD BODY “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (Psalm 139:14) Your body is not evil. If anyone ever told you that, they were dead wrong. When God made us, He declared us good. Not just the spiritual part of us, whatever that is. All of us. Body, mind, soul. It’s all good. This is why the incarnation is so significant. Jesus coming to earth, fully human and fully divine. When He rose from the dead, it was a bodily resurrection. He didn’t fly away and leave His body behind. Why? Because our bodies are good. Walking in the woods. Watching a sunset. Running. Gardening. Laughing. Dancing. Painting. Knitting. Writing. Kneeling in prayer. Lifting our hands in praise. Baking bread. Making love. Eating good food. Offering a shoulder to cry on. Reaching out a hand to someone in need. All these things require our bodies; all these things are good. The aim of life isn’t to escape our bodies for a spiritual experience – spiritual experiences require our bodies. Your body is the shadow of your spirit; your spirit is the shadow of your body. They make each other dance. Dear God, thank You for my body. Thank You that You Yourself became a body. Thank You for making me the way I am; for loving me the way I am. Help me to love my own body, just as it is. In Jesus’ name, amen. ENOUGH: LIGHT A prayer of confession. God of infinite mercy and grace, I have not seen myself the way you see me: beautiful and worthy and good. Forgive me, and turn me back towards the light. I have not seen others the way you see them: loved and accepted and part of my family. Forgive me, and turn me back towards the light. I have not seen your creation the way you see it: sacred and precious and in need of my care. Forgive me, and turn me back towards the light. For when I have not lived in faith; for when I have not lived in hope; for when I have not lived in love. Forgive me, and turn me back towards the light. Thank you that you are the God of restoration. Restore me now in your wonderful light, in the name of Christ. Amen.
