Wentworth and the Crofts
I've been thinking about this for a few days so here goes;
Wentworth and Anne met and fell in love eight years before the start of Persuasion. Admiral and Mrs. Croft have been married for - fifteen years? So, at the time he and Anne met, his sister had been married for seven years. We don't know much about his background, but it's obvious (to me) that he looks up to his sister and brother-in-law. So, you might think that when Wentworth thinks about marriage, he's looking to the Crofts as an example to follow.
*******
"What a great traveller you must have been, ma'am!" said Mrs Musgrove to Mrs Croft.
"Pretty well, ma'am in the fifteen years of my marriage; though many women have done more. I have crossed the Atlantic four times, and have been once to the East Indies, and back again, and only once; besides being in different places about home: Cork, and Lisbon, and Gibraltar. But I never went beyond the Streights, and never was in the West Indies. We do not call Bermuda or Bahama, you know, the West Indies."
... "I can safely say, that the happiest part of my life has been spent on board a ship. While we were together, you know, there was nothing to be feared. Thank God! I have always been blessed with excellent health, and no climate disagrees with me. A little disordered always the first twenty-four hours of going to sea, but never knew what sickness was afterwards. The only time I ever really suffered in body or mind, the only time that I ever fancied myself unwell, or had any ideas of danger, was the winter that I passed by myself at Deal, when the Admiral (Captain Croft then) was in the North Seas. I lived in perpetual fright at that time, and had all manner of imaginary complaints from not knowing what to do with myself, or when I should hear from him next; but as long as we could be together, nothing ever ailed me, and I never met with the smallest inconvenience."
Persuasion (pp. 45-46). Public Domain Books. Kindle Edition.
****** From Wentworth's point of view; he has to compare his strong-willed, loyal sister, happily married to a Navy man, willing to face the difficulties at his side; loving the travel and fearing nothing but separation.
Then there's Anne, who (in his view) 'noped' her way out of their engagement at the advice of Lady Russell - a woman who openly disliked him.
Anne, who (according to the Musgroves) turned down a perfectly good match because (once again) Lady Russell said 'No'. (WE know that LR wanted Anne to marry Charles, but no one else does.)
I can't blame him for that. I'm not sure I would be so quick to give a second chance to someone who dumped me because of advice from someone who I knew hated me.
He doesn't hate Anne, he doubts her loyalty and strength of mind.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS: What Happens to People Born and Living in Non-Islamic Countries?: Part 1
Those who ask this question imply: "Since we believe in God and His Prophet, we will go to Paradise. But those who were born and live in non-Islamic countries do not benefit from the Divine Light and Guidance, so they will go to Hell." The question is a debating ploy, claiming on one the hand a greater concern for non-Muslims than that possessed by God and, on the other hand, sneaking in a criticism of Islam.
First, there is no general statement or decree in Islam that those who live in non-Islamic countries will go to Hell. Rather, the decree is this: If those who heard the Prophet's message and invitation, and witnessed the truth and light of Islam, reject it and turn away from it, they will go to Hell. Whether those who have heard the Divine Message live in Islamic countries is beside the point; what matters is that they heed and obey that Message. Those who do not do so will go to Hell-even if they were born and lived in Islamic countries.
Many Muslim scholars and theologians have spoken and written on what the Qur'an and the hadith say on the subject. But why do people dwell upon this sort of question? How will an answer affect or change their lives? Will it gain them anything in the Hereafter? Is there a difference between those who are willful unbelievers and those who do not believe because they have never heard of Islam? Will the latter go to Hell and suffer the same punishment?
The Ash'aris held that one who has not heard the name of God or the teachings of Islam will be "excused". God, as He wills, rewards such people for the good they have done, and they enjoy the blessings of Paradise.
The Maturidi view is somewhat similar to the Mu'tazili view. If such people find the Creator through the use of reason, even though they do not know His Names or Attributes, they will be saved. If they do not do this, they will not be saved. This position is not so different from that of the Ash'aris.
According to the Maturidis, it does not matter where one lives, for anyone can see the sun and moon rise and set, the stars sparkle, creation's balance and order, the splendor and regularity amid the enormous variety of creation, the grandeur of mountains and the gentle easing breezes on their slopes, and the thrilling colors and movements of flowers, trees, and animals. All of these are signs of the Owner, Creator, Sustainer, and Administrator of all things. Therefore, people can observe and acknowledge the Creator's absolute existence, power, and grace without knowing His Names and Attributes, or His Books and Messengers. Such people are among the excused. That is why, when asked this question, we should refer to the view of the great imams of Islam.
Imam Ash'ari deduces his judgment from: We never punish until We have sent a Messenger (17:15). People cannot be punished for a wrong until due warning has reached them through a true Messenger.
According to the Maturidis, reason can distinguish good from evil. But it would be mistaken to say that reason can work everything out by itself. This is why God uses Messengers to relay His rulings of what is good and evil, and leaves nothing to fallible human judgment and experience. The Maturidi argument goes like this: Reason can work out that adultery and fornication are evil, because such practices interrupt genealogy and lineage and cause it to be lost, which, in turn, cause problems in inheritance and other matters. Reason can work out that theft is evil, for it allows no one to live in any degree of security; and that alcohol and other intoxicants are evil, because they cause people to lose consciousness, damage health, make them vulnerable to many illnesses, and can affect their offspring.
The same is true for what is good. Reason can grasp that faith in God is good, for it leads us to satisfaction and inner contentment. Even in this world, we begin to sense the contentment that we will have in Paradise. The way to faith is not so difficult. A bedouin once came to the Prophet and explained how he attained faith: "Camel droppings point to the existence of a camel. Footprints on the sand tell of a traveler. Heaven with its stars, the Earth with its mountains and valleys, and the sea with its waves-don't they point to the Maker, All-Powerful, Knowing, Wise, and Caring?" As he attained faith in God through his mind, we cannot underrate the role of reason and thinking in faith.
Setting out from this point, Maturidi says that one may find the Creator through reason. There are many examples from pre-Islamic times. One is Waraqa ibn Nawfal, Khadija's cousin, who felt that a Prophet would come during his lifetime because many of the signs had been fulfilled. When the first Revelation came to Muhammad, Khadija sought Waraqa's advice. He confirmed the truth of Muhammad's mission and revelations. Understanding that no good would ever come from the idols, Waraqa ignored them and, based on own judgment, believed in the existence of the One God.
Another such person was Zayd ibn 'Amr, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab's uncle. Knowing that the coming of a Prophet was imminent, he ignored the idols and worshipped the One God. Although he died before Muhammad's Prophethood, he intuitively knew it was coming. On his deathbed, he called his son Sa'id, 'Umar, and other family members and said: "The light of God is on the horizon. I believe it will emerge fully very soon. I already feel its signs over our heads. As soon as the Prophet comes, without losing any time, go and join him."
Any human-made "god" or "goddess" cannot be God or answer people's needs, for such things need those who created them. How can something that has needs and wants answer and provide for those who call upon it? Through such simple reasoning, we can realize our need to know the Lord of Heaven and Earth. When we direct our mind and reason to Revelation, our need to know is met and the way to eternal bliss is opened.
In sum, the only people who will go to Hell are those who see or hear about the Prophet and the Qur'an but do not seek further knowledge of them. Those who remain in darkness involuntarily, because they had no chance to hear about these things, may benefit from Divine Grace and not be blamed and punished for their wrong deeds.
This question brings to mind the difference between the early and present-day Muslims, and our duties toward non-Muslims. The first Muslims lived Islam fully, represented and spread it over a large area, and thereby awakened humanity's collective conscience. When we read their biographies, we see such greatness in their thinking and living that it becomes obvious why those who came into contact with them embraced Islam. They were so fearless and indomitable, so unconcerned with the pleasures and sufferings of worldly life, that they made a lasting impression upon the world.
Thanks to their sincerity and zeal, many people learned of Islam within a very short time. By the time of Caliph 'Uthman (ruled 644-56), Islam had spread from the Straits of Gibraltar to the Aral Sea, from Anatolia to the Great Wall of China. During the time of Mu'awiya (ruled 661-80), Muslims reached the Atlantic Ocean. All of Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria were under the glorious flag of Islam.
Since these Muslims lived Islam in its entirety, most people in those lands loved and respected them. Their exemplary lives led many to Islam. Indigenous Christians and Jews often preferred Muslim rule to that of their co-religionists. Once when the Muslim rulers had to leave Damascus, the Christian community and its religious leaders prayed in their churches that the Muslims would not have to leave. When the Muslims left, the Christians promised to live under their rule and pay the due tax if they could return.
The sincerity of these Muslims brought many people into Islam. Indeed, it is impossible to imagine how it could have been otherwise when those people saw the early Muslims, for each of them was an "'Umar" in sincerity and commitment. They kept long vigils during the night, and were legendary warriors on horseback during the day. They won over so many hearts and impressed people that all believed the whole world would soon belong to Islam.

Pandemic forces adjustments to long-planned funeral arrangements
Thomson Reuters · Posted: Apr 10, 2021 11:05 AM ET | Last Updated: 22 minutes ago
Prince Charles paid a personal tribute on Saturday to his "dear papa" Prince Philip, saying the Royal Family missed him enormously and that the 99-year-old would have been amazed at the touching reaction to his death from around the world.
Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth, who had been at her side throughout her record-breaking 69-year reign, died at Windsor Castle on Friday, at age 99.
"As you can imagine, my family and I miss my father enormously," said Charles, the couple's eldest son and heir to the throne, outside his Highgrove House home in west England.
"My dear papa was a very special person who I think above all else would have been amazed by the reaction and the touching things that have been said about him and from that point of view we are, my family, deeply grateful for all that. It will sustain us in this particular loss and at this particularly sad time."
Pandemic-adjusted funeral plans
Buckingham Palace announced that the funeral for Philip would be held on April 17, and that the Queen's grandson,  Prince Harry, who now lives in the United States, would attend.
Harry's wife, Meghan Markle, who is pregnant with their second child, will not attend on doctor's advice, according to the palace.
The palace said long-established plans for the funeral had to be redrawn and scaled down because of COVID-19 restrictions, but they remained very much in line with Philip's wishes.
Philip, who was officially known as the Duke of Edinburgh, will be given a ceremonial royal funeral, not a state funeral, as had been planned before the pandemic.
But there will be no public processions, and it will be held entirely within the grounds of Windsor Castle and limited to 30 mourners.
The funeral, which will be broadcast on live television, will be held at St. George's Chapel on the castle grounds and will be preceded by a minute's silence across the country.
Charles and other members of the Royal Family will walk behind a specially-modified Land Rover, which Philip helped design. At the conclusion of the service, Philip will be interred in the Royal Vault.
Buckingham Palace stressed the service would be held in line with government coronavirus guidelines, meaning members of the Royal Family, including the Queen, would be expected to wear masks.
Philip's children pay tribute
Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, meanwhile, travelled to Windsor Castle on Saturday to visit with their mother. Philip and the Queen had been married for over 73 years.
Edward and his wife, Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, spent about an hour at the castle, and Sophie told reporters "the Queen has been amazing" as the couple left Windsor in a Land Rover. Andrew waved at crowds as he left.
Prince Charles visited his mother on Friday, shortly after Buckingham Palace announced Philip's death.
In a tribute program aired by the BBC on Friday, all four of Philip's children remembered him as someone who had encouraged and supported them.
Charles described his father's life as an "astonishing achievement," while Edward said his father had a tough job that was carried out with the most "extraordinary flair."
Princess Anne praised the support her father had provided her mother, from her early years as Queen.
"They needed to be a double act for a lot of that time to allow her to take on that role."
In honour of the prince, the armed forces, including artillery units in London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast and the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, and some warships, fired Death Gun Salutes at noon local time on Saturday.
Royal Navy ships HMS Diamond and HMS Montrose took part in the ceremonies to honour the Duke of Edinburgh, who served as a naval officer during the Second World War and held the office of Lord High Admiral.
Gun salutes also marked the deaths of Queen Victoria in 1901 and Winston Churchill in 1965.
A nation mourns
The Royal Family asked the public to heed physical distancing rules and avoid visits to its residences, but people still gathered to place cards and bouquets outside Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace and pay tribute to Prince Philip.
Family dysfunction: Prince Philip's early life
Why Prince Philip was more than a 'strength and stay' for the Queen
Flags at Buckingham Palace and at government buildings across Britain have been lowered to half-mast and billboard operators replaced ads with photographs and tributes to the prince.
Sporting events observed moments of silence in his honour

What to do when you are applying for a Gibraltar passport
By using the Gibberers' International Travel Services you can get a ferry from Marseille to Gibberers which can take you as far as Valladolid.
https://ru.ivisa.com/gibraltar-passenger-locator-form
All tourists who wish to travel to Gibraltar's small coastal town have access to a new service. On departure from mainland Spain you are not required to leave through the international airport as you enter into the Malaga International Airport. Instead, you can simply go through a port of call along the coast to book a car to take your to your next destination. This port of call is located on the Costa del Sol and as such is an important departure point for those travelling from continental Europe.
When booking your car and arranging your passport details it is important that you fill in your Gibraltar passenger locator form with details of the destination you wish to visit. Every traveller must have a valid passport to leave Spain. The "arm's-length" application period, which can last up three months, requires that you provide details about any destination you are planning to visit. Once the application period has expired then you must return to your originating country and the documents must then be presented for onward processing. You can still apply online via the authorized website or by telephone, but your details will not be posted to Spain's authorities due to privacy concerns.
Before you travel to Gibraltar, it is essential to contact the Port of Gibraltar. If you are unable or unwilling to contact a port of call, there is an option to arrange a direct service from Malaga once you have crossed the straits. However, there is no railway service to take you from the airport to visit Gibraltar. You can only reach the small coastal village of Cuerne de Verde by either road or boat.
You can use the Gibberers International Travel Services to get a ferry from Marseille, France to Gibberers that can take you as far south as Valladolid. You can then travel by road to the island. It takes approximately four hours to complete the journey. You can also hire a car and travel to Madrid from Marseille. A bus service runs from Charles de Gaulle terminal to Valle Escondido. A journey by train leaves Valle Escondido every day, arriving at the international terminal in Barcelon early in the morning.
In order to avoid the need for a contagious sickness test, you should arrange to have yourself examined upon arriving in Spain. Once you have arrived in Spain you can arrange for onward travel to any destination within the European Union. You should be aware that certain EU member states will require you to adhere to their laws. For example you may need to remain at least six hours after landing to have your temperature checked.
The final step in the Spain passenger locator application is to provide information about you and any documents that may be relevant to your entry into Spain. You will then be sent a Spain representative, usually known as an escritura, who will assist you throughout the application process and also assist you with documentation and advice in respect of the civil contingencies emergency in Spain. Throughout the processing of your application for entry clearance into Spain, you will be in constant contact with your consul. If you are unable to make a decision on your application for entry clearance to Gibralfonair airport you should ask your representative to inform you of your right of appeal.

Relative Values interview: documentary producer Nick Reed and his fashion designer son, Harris
The father and son on going from washing dishes to the big time — and dressing Harry Styles
The Sunday Times, December 1 2019
Tumblr media
[[MORE]]
Nick
I always wanted to be a father and Harris was an extraordinary baby. At the time he was born, I was just starting out as a Hollywood agent and his mother had just launched a candle company; she had clients such as Ellen DeGeneres and Jennifer Lopez. She is super-creative too. She would take him to work or he would travel on planes with me.
We knew that Harris was special when he was very young. When a six-year-old holds a conversation with adults or starts doing interior design on the house, it’s pretty obvious. Our job was to support him. Life pressures led to the dissolution of our marriage when Harris was about 10, but we dedicated ourselves to co-parenting.
My father was in the navy. I was born in Gibraltar, but we moved every three or four years when I was young. It gave me an adventurous spirit, which my son has definitely inherited. Harris moved from the US, his birthplace, to France for a year at 15 years old because he knew he wanted to get into fashion and needed to learn French. That takes balls.
...When I won an Oscar for The Lady in Number 6 [in 2014], I called Harris — in France, where it was the middle of the night — and got Bradley Cooper to tell him in French that I’d won. No one wanted that film at first: Hollywood had told me I couldn’t produce a film about a Holocaust-surviving pianist because I wasn’t a producer, nor Jewish, nor knew anything about music. I really believe — and this is something Harris realises — that great timing, on top of talent, is key. You need to be able to connect the dots.
As a Brit, I think something I have picked up in America is that Nike-style “Just Do It” attitude; I’ve tried to show Harris that he can do whatever he wants. At school, he had a lot of problems: attention deficit disorder, which they wanted to put him on drugs for when he was six, and dyslexia. But we moved him to a liberal arts school and I think that’s one of the reasons he’s turned out soamazingly. Given he loved fashion, I bought him a subscription to Women’s Wear Daily to encourage him to read.
I remember a school project for which Harris and his classmates were given cardboard boxes and asked to represent their pasts, presents and futures using them. Every other kid had just drawn on the side; Harris’s had twigs flying out of it in all directions.
He was always super-artistic and immaculate. He reminds me of James Bond: always cool. On the few occasions I look great, people assume it’s down to Harris. But I’d be so lucky: there’s a queue to be dressed by him now.
Harris
My dad’s still very English, despite having lived in LA for so long. He doesn’t throw compliments around, but I know he thought my work with Harry Styles was amazing. Harry wore about 13 different looks on his worldwide tour [in 2017-18] and about half of them were mine; Gucci did most of the rest, then there was Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen. To be among them was incredible. I wrote down most of the ideas in crayon on the back of a napkin in a meeting with Harry. He’s really amazing. Seeing him singing in my clothes in front of 40,000 people was ridiculous.
Having a dad whose career has gone up, down and all over the place, in a great way, has been brilliant in teaching me that taking risks and potentially failing is part of reality and success.
I’m studying fashion at Central Saint Martins in London and we have to do placements in our third year. The only place I wanted to work was Gucci, so I emailed them one evening and got a generic reply. I thought, fine. But then they called and said Alessandro Michele [the brand’s creative director] wanted to fly me to Milan, the Disneyland of fashion, to meet me.
We got on so well, talked for 15 minutes and he asked me to walk in their upcoming show. It wasn’t quite like my dad’s casting call — being told you’re cute while washing up — but it was extraordinary. He said he’d seen me on Instagram, then a magazine article about me, then my application and decided he needed to meet me. Gucci don’t do internships, so it was huge. I knew I couldn’t not do it.
Usually I sew all day, go to dinner, come home and work on my designs. I just don’t sleep;
Dad says you can sleep when you’re dead. He’s the one I call for advice, mostly of a creative or business nature. He understands I don’t want to say no to things, just know how to fit them all in.
Central Saint Martins was the only fashion school in the world I wanted to go to and I got in following a terrible interview. The guy interviewing me ripped me apart and I was holding back tears. But in my first year I felt like the sky was the limit. I don’t want to make beautiful things, I want to make things that have a story. My parents told me off when I was eight for telling a friend’s mother that the curtains in their house didn’t match the rugs. I can’t help tweaking things.
I believe you should always be who you are, do whatever you’re doing to the fullest, and not give a shit about what people think. Moving around a lot, like my dad, has made me really understand myself — I must have moved 30 times already and it’s made me strong. Home to me is everywhere, or where family is.
People who don’t understand fashion often think it’s silly, but it has such power to change the way people feel and to push ideas. My dad helped me grow up in a bubble of acceptance and freedom. I came out as gay at nine years old and think of myself now as more fluid. But I hate labels, and don’t need them with Dad: he’s always trusted that I know who I am.

How has the Overwatch story moved forward since launch? I'm not doubting you, I just hear a lot of people say it's standing still and you usually explain things pretty clearly
Great question! So basically, at launch the in-universe Status Quo was very different than it is now. Here’s some of the beginnings of the plot threads, just a few things that were true in the “present day” of the game at launch, and through many of the early animated shorts and comics:
Ana Amari was presumed dead, as was Jack Morrison, as was Gabriel Reyes. Jack and Gabriel being alive was known to the audience, but not to any other known characters in-universe. Ana was seemingly presumed dead by everyone. The three characters were all in separate places at this point.
Doomfist had been defeated in battle by Winston and was now seemingly in prison.
Brigitte traveled with Reinhardt but did not engage directly in his crimefighting. She repaired his armor and treated his wounds but did not join the fight herself.
Bastion was wandering and exploring the wilderness alone following his post-crisis awakening
Torbjorn and Zarya wouldn’t be caught dead with an omnic
Following an attack on Gibraltar by Reaper, Winston has sent out a Recall, summoning any available Overwatch agents back to service. Initially, only Tracer is shown to respond.
Sombra is a behind-the-scenes member of the talon organization. She’s mentioned, but neither the audience nor the majority of the major characters know anything about her including “is she even real?” or “is Sombra one person or multiple people?”
Volskaya is a well-respected defense manufacturer who Zarya looks up to and is viewed as a hero.
Now, since launch, a lot of these things have changed. For example:
Ana Amari sends a letter to her daughter Fareeha informing her that she’s alive and explaining why she faked her death, and resumes vigilante activity.
In the course of this vigilante activity, she encountered Jack Morrison doing the same thing, and the two of them did battle with Reaper, discovering he was actually Gabriel Reyes. Reyes escaped the skirmish, Ana and Jack began working and living together at the Necropolis.
Doomfist escapes from prison.
Doomfist assaults Numbani killing the Omnic police force and steals his gauntlet from the Numbani heritage museum.
As a result of Doomfist’s assault on Numbani, a young Efi Oladele recovers the remains of an OR-14 and rebuilds it into a new robotic superhero specifically designed to be effective against Doomfist.
Doomfist reunites with his team, assassinates a Talon higher-up, and meets with the Talon council (Moira, Sanjay, Reaper, etc) to resume his role as De Facto leader of Talon.
Reinhardt and Mei receive and respond to the Overwatch recall.
After trying unsuccessfully to convince Reinhardt not to return to active service, Brigitte Lindholm resolves to train and become a superhero in her own right, upgrading herself from Alfred to Robin, so that she can make sure that she is able to protect her beloved but foolhardy godfather.
Following an assassination attempt on Katya Volskaya’s life, Volskaya lies to Zarya about Sombra’s motives and sends Zarya to covertly neutralize her. In the process, Zarya discovers Sombra’s true identity and befriends an omnic named Lynx-Seventeen. In the confrontation with Sombra, she learns the truth, that Katya Volskaya is a war profiteer dealing on both sides of the war. This, paired with her tempestuous friendship with Lynx-Seventeen, causes her to rethink both her hatred of omnics, her trust in her human heroes, and her unwavering loyalty to her country.
Bastion’s travels bring him to Sweden where he encounters Torbjorn, who actually sees something unique in him. This also causes Torbjorn to question his stance on omnics, and he cautiously allows Bastion into his home for protection and examination.
Now, these are only some of the areas in which the story has advanced since launch. They do a fair amount of backstory work too (almost too much, but I don’t mind) and a lot of the updates are simply filling in the past, like telling us Moira is a person and that she’s responsible for Gabriel’s condition, showing us Uprising and Retribution, even the flashbacks confirming how Ana “died” and how she survived could be counted under that (although I count it in ways the story has moved forward in the present day, since it wasn’t just the “she is alive” reveal, at least two story-advancing things have happened on that storyline since the reveal).
But what I’m saying is basically that if someone went into a coma right after “infiltration” and woke up today and asked me about how the story has moved forward since Winston hit the big Recall button, I’d have a lot to update them on even if I excluded all Pre-Recall flashbacks. It seems like not a lot has happened because Overwatch, the work of fiction, is practically never updated, so in the two-year period since launch, only maybe a few months have passed in-universe. I’m used to this because I watch the Venture Bros, which has been running for 14 years and only about 2 years have passed for the characters, but not everyone is as patient, which is understandable.
I’d say the main issue, and the only legitimate inconsistency, in the lore is the schedule at which it’s released. We have enough information now to know we’ll get a big background lore drop every spring, approx. four new heroes a year feat. Origin videos, and an animated short at Gamescom and another at Blizzcon, but the comics, the main part of narrative-advancing lore, are released on such a sporadic pace that except for the Archives comic, nobody really knows when the next one is going to drop, ever, until it’s dropped. Everyone is always shocked when a new comic comes out, which isn’t great.
Most comics are released on a monthly schedule, but I’d even accept a quarterly or semiannual schedule so long as it was consistent and made clear to the audience. My advice to Blizzard would be to hold off on the next comic until they can lock down a release date for the next comic after that, and then at the end of every comic it should pull a James Bond and be like “Overwatch will return this April with a new comic.” They don’t even have to give a date, just say what month a comic will be out and they wouldn’t have to hype anything.

On January 22, 1788, one of the most infamous poets of all time was born in England. Lord Byron, born as George Gordon Byron, was notorious for sexual escapades and being quite the asshole around town.
In his early years, Lord Byron faced many challenges. His father abandoned him at a very young age. His mother was schizophrenic. And his nurse abused him. Byron never had much of any discipline and he lacked a sense of moderation. As we all know, these traits followed him into his later life. In 1798, at age ten, George inherited the title of his uncle, William Byron, and from then on was called Lord Byron. At age 12, Byron began studying at Harrow School in London where he experienced the first, of many, sexual encounters with males and females. In 1803, Byron fell in love with a distant cousin, where the love was not requinted. From this, Byron wrote poems such as "Hills of Annesley" and "The Adieu." From 1805 to 1808, Byron studied at Trinity College, where he engaged in many sexual escapades as well as fell into deep debt. When he was not engaging in unspeakable acts, Byron enjoyed boxing, horse riding, and, you guessed it, gambling.
While he was not in school, Byron stayed with his mother in Nottinghamshire, where he spent a lot of time writing poems. At one point he had written a collection titled ‘Fugitive Pieces’ the later was burned at the advice of a close friend, because of the ‘amorous’ contents of some of the poems. Later, Byron produced ‘Hours of Idleness’ which contained many of the previous poems along with some newer pieces. This collection received great criticism which later prompted Byron to write his first satire piece, ‘English Bards and Scottish Reviewers.’ After some time and when he returned from traveling, Byron trusted R. C. Dallas as his literary agent and asked him to publish his poem ‘Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage.’ Byron thought this poem as something not so great, however, it was received with acclaim. In his success, he published four other poems: Oriental Tales, The Giaour, The Bride of Abydos, The Corsair, and Lara. It is also during this time in which he began an intimacy with his future biographer, Thomas Moore.
From 1809 to 1811, Byron spent time on the Grand Tour where he traveled with Hobhouse for the first year and his entourage of servants. This entourage included Byron’s trusted valet, William Fletcher. Since the Napoleonic Wars were in their midst, Byron was forced to avoid traveling to most of Europe. Instead, Byron went to the Mediterranean. This journey provided Byron with the chance to get away from creditors. Historians have also found that in letters from Byron’s friend, Charles Skinner Matthews, another motive for heading to the Mediterranean was in pursuit of homosexual experiences. Byron began the trip to Portugal, then to Lisbon. From Lisbon, he traveled to Seville, Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz, Gibraltar, Malta, and Greece. During his time in Greece, in Athens, Byron met a 14-year-old named Nicolo Giraud who he became quite close with. It’s suggested that the two were intimate and had a sexual affair. Byron sent Giraud to school at a monastery in Malta and gave him 7,000 euros. However, later this was canceled because Byron stated he was tired of ‘coitum plenum et optabilem.’ This translates to ‘complete intercourse to one’s heart desire.’ In 1810, Byron wrote ‘Maid of Athens, ere we part’ for a 12-year-old girl named Teresa Makri. Byron reportedly offered 500 euros for her, but the offer was not accepted. Later, Byron made his way to Smyrna where he and Hobhouse got a ride to Constantinople. While waiting for their ship to dock, Byron and one of the ships Marines, swam the Hellespont. This is commemorated in the second canto of Don Juan.
Due to his publication of ‘Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage,’ Byron became quite the celebrity. “He rapidly became the most brilliant star in the dazzling world of Regency London. He was sought after at every society venue, elected to several exclusive clubs, and frequented the most fashionable London drawing-rooms.” Byron produced many works during this time, including The Giaour, The Bride of Abydos, Parisina, The Siege of Corinth, and Hebrew Melodies. At this time, Byron was also involved in an affair with Lady Caroline Lamb, amongst others. He also acquired debt and was seeking marriage. One consideration for marriage was Annabella Milbanke, however, in 1813, he met his half-sister Augusta Leigh. There sparked many rumors of incest and Augusta’s daughter, Medora, was also suspected to belong to Byron. However, Annabella and Byron married on January 2, 1815, and their daughter Ada was born in December the next year. The marriage was miserable due to Byron’s incessant cheating and obsession with his half-sister. Annabella even considered Byron insane, and in January 1816 she left him and took their daughter. The scandal of separation along with the rumors of Augusta and an ever-increasing debt caused Byron to flee England in April 1816. He never returned.
After fleeing England, Byron journeyed through Belgium and moved up the Rhine river. In the summer of 1816, Byron settled at the Villa Diodati by Lake Geneva in Switzerland. With him was his personal physician, John William Polidori. It was in Geneva that Byron found friendship in Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley, and Claire Clairmont, with whom he had had an affair with in London. Because of “incessant rain” the group was kept indoors at the Villa Diodati for three days in June. During this time the five turned to reading and soon started planning their own stories. This is where Mary started Frankenstein. John Polidori wrote a piece titled ‘The Vampyre’ inspired by one of Byron’s stories. Later in the year, Byron spent his winter in Venice, only pausing his travels when he fell in love with Marianna Segati, a woman who’s house Byron was staying. Later this love was replaced by that of a 22-year-old named Margarita Cogni. Both women were married. Cogni could not read or write and she left her husband to move into Byron’s Venice house. They fought quite a bit which often cause Byron to spend the night in his gondola. Later, when Byron asked Cogni to leave the house, she threw herself into the Venetian canal. Byron spent quite some time in Italy and later in Greece. In Greece, Byron got himself into a bit of political trouble with Souliots, who demanded that Byron owned them money.
On February 15, 1824, Byron fell ill and bloodletting only weakened him. He partially recovered, but then fell ill once more in early April. Therapeutic bleeding insisted on by his doctors, only worsened his cold. It is believed that because of this treatment, Byron caught sepsis. He later caught a fever and soon after passed on April 19th.
Byron’s life was full of chaos and the man is still infamous to this day. Granted, we got quite the number of poems from him though. Poems that are still studied and admired today.

Crypto Continues Its Rise In Gibraltar, With Major Franchises Now Accepting Bitcoin
If you ever thought that one of the downsides of cryptocurrency is that you can’t exactly use it to buy a coffee during a rushed lunch break, it’s time to disabuse yourself of that notion. As reported by Cointelegraph, the major coffee chain, Costa Coffee, now accepts Bitcoin payments in Gibraltar.
Big names are increasingly embracing cryptocurrency
The news outlet said it was not only Costa Coffee, but also Card Factory and Hotel Chocolat that now accepted Bitcoin as a currency in the British Overseas Territory.
Customers of these brands who wish to take advantage of this option can do so via Bitcoin’s Lightning Network (LN). Cointelegraphsaid that reporter Joe Hall had discovered during a “shopping spree” in the locality that “the LN is ideal for microtransaction cappuccinos, postcard payments or ice cream investments”.
According to the news website, “payments are instant, frictionless, and charge merchants less than the typical Mastercard or Visa payment rails.”
Neil Walker, managing director of Sandpiper GI – the group managing the retail franchises – was also quoted as saying that making payments with a Lightning-enabled card was “no different to using a contactless credit card.”
He continued: “It is just as quick you can tap and pay contactless credit cards, you can tap and pay Lightning, scan a QR code. And whilst I haven’t timed it, I reckon it’s almost exactly the same speed.”
Sandpiper GI joined forces with the Isle of Man Bitcoin exchange, CoinCorner, to help provide Bitcoin Lightning point-of-sale (PoS) devices to merchants.
It’s becoming more and more difficult to deny Bitcoin’s utility
Mr Walker said that even for those who continued to be sceptical about Bitcoin, the easy transactions the cryptocurrency enabled between merchants and customers rendered the franchises’ move to accept Bitcoin a “no-brainer”.
He said that the use of the Lightning Network allowed for mobile payments and a reduction in transaction costs.
He added: “For a long time, the idea of paying with Bitcoin seemed alien to both businesses and individuals, but with the launch of The Bolt Card and the ability to “tap and pay” via Lightning, the user experience is quick, easy, and familiar to everyone.”
Paying for a coffee in Gibraltar using Bitcoin is a straightforward process of scanning a QR code or tapping to pay with an NFC-enabled Bitcoin Lightning card.
And with Gibraltar attracting some eight million tourists a year from across the globe – to say nothing of the approximately 15,000 cross-border workers who travel over from Spain to work in Gibraltar each day – there would seem to be obvious merits to embracing a truly international, borderless currency. After all, Spain uses the Euro, while the British Overseas Territory uses the Gibraltar pound.
Nor are the aforementioned franchises the only merchants in Gibraltar that now accept Bitcoin payments. The jewellery store Essardas Luxury, for example, has accepted Bitcoin since early last year, and smaller independent outlets have also embraced Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Howdy! Slightly weird prompt: Reaper, 76, and Mercy with an s/o who's an actual grim reaper working for a global dispatch company of grim reapers, and Reader was assigned to watch them by their superiors because they all defied death in some way and it screws up Reader's "to-die list". So Reader ends up joining their cause to keep an eye on them, and their relationship starts out as enemies to begrudging respect then to friends and then lovers. Thanks so much, I adore your writing! ^^'
Sorry for the long wait! Life’s been rough lately so I didn’t have much time to work on this, but I hope you enjoy it!
Tagging: @sylvennia @elise-the-assassin @templarboyband
Translation: “Ich liebe dich auch” —–> “I love you too”
Gabriel Reyes/Reaper:
When he first met you, he was actually stunned that you were just like him
Death following you wherever you went, the ability to become a non-corporeal figure at will, even your black clothing matched his perfectly
It does annoy him that you only show your face to a few people around Talon besides him
Sombra had teased him about his ‘imaginary friend’ until you appeared right next to her and shouted “Boo!” in her ear
On the other hand, you were having a bit of fun monitoring the man that your bosses had sent you to keep an eye on
It miffed you a bit to know that Reaper couldn’t die like everyone else; but at the same time, you were oddly glad for the company seeing as you were one of many that embodied Death itself
Overtime though, you did have to admit that it was comforting to be near Reaper
Comforting enough to call him by his real name in private, much to both his and your surprise
The two of you did begin to spend more time together after a while, simply talking about what your life was like before Talon and him telling you how he became Reaper
You did end up wishing that his creator’s death would come just a bit sooner than its current date when he finished telling you about his backstory
As time moved on, you started to feel something resembling love or a similar affection towards Reaper, and you had an inkling that he felt the same way
However, you truly realize that that emotion was love until you decided to kiss him out of the blue one day
You were a bit shocked when he decided to reciprocate it when you hurriedly pulled away from him after fully realizing what you had just done
You swear that you had to listen closely when Reaper mumbled that he did like you a lot and that you were one of the only few people that he genuinely cared for anymore
Perhaps you were exactly what he needed to be able to spend the rest of his existence in this lonely world that the two of you lived in
Jack Morrison/Soldier: 76:
When he first discovers who you actually are, he thinks that you’re there to finally end his life
Unfortunately, he wasn’t that lucky
He oddly doesn’t mind having you around while he went around and tried to find out what happened to Overwatch
The only thing that troubles him about you was how happy you were to accompany him whenever he went to deal with local crime organizations such as Los Muertos
Then again you were an actual Grim Reaper that took people towards their fates in the afterlife
Jack does find your idea about how justice would be delivered in the end relieving and terrifying at the same time
What did death have in store for him when his time was up?
Sometimes he’ll ask you about what it felt like to talk to the dead, and all you’ll say is that it was just like talking with another living person whether they were a giving individual or a horrible being
He had to admit that seeing your reaction to Ana being alive a bit humorous when the two of you arrived in Egypt
He is a little surprised that you didn’t know about whether or not she was dead, but he brushed it off as the information being withheld from you
On the contrary, you were having a bit of fun while keeping an eye out on Jack
He was a breath of fresh air in comparison to being around immortal death carriers every day
You often debated about whether or not you should tell him how he would go out, but you did refrain yourself before you said anything, knowing that he could ultimately change important decisions in the future
The two of you talked about Jack’s past, especially before he became Soldier: 76, and you felt yourself getting a little closer to the vigilante than you originally intended to
Overtime, you found yourself falling for him, even though you knew that there was a good chance that whatever could happen between the two of you may not be able to continue for long
Nonetheless, you simply took a deep breath and pulled him aside one day with Ana knowingly looking on and confessed your feelings towards him
The shock on his face was enough to make you worry that he didn’t feel the same way about you, but the kiss he gently places on your forehead is enough to assuage your fears
As you moved to tentatively hug him, you silently promised to try and keep him safe as best as you could until his time ran out
Angela Ziegler/Mercy:
At first Angela is convinced that you don’t exist
Or at least she doesn’t believe that you truly exist
However, she does eventually come around to the fact that you were a living, breathing being with a bit of reluctance
Angela does ask what it felt like to bring the dead to the afterlife to which you replied that it was like taking them on a short ride to where they were meant to go post-mortem
You do find it odd that your superiors asked you to monitor someone that kept people alive while you and your colleagues were the epitome of death itself
On the other hand, Angela does find it strange that you could make yourself appear and disappear on your own will, but she shrugged it off as the reason why most people didn’t see you drift around in broad daylight
She has asked you to see if you could let someone that was nearing the end of their life to be spared for just a little while longer, despite knowing your answer
It does pain you to tell her so, but those were the rules of death
That fact did sting a bit in her heart, but she accepted it reluctantly and you could see it on her face whenever you trailed behind her throughout her day
You had a feeling that it had something to do with the fact that her parents died, but you make a mental note to tell her about their lives after their deaths
Although she does fully come around to you not being able to hold off on carrying souls towards their lives in the afterworld, Angela does respect how you can comfort those who were on their deathbed in their final moments
After a while, she insists that you call her Angela instead of Dr. Ziegler like everyone else
You were mildly surprised, but you accepted it nonetheless
When Overwatch was recalled by Winston, she does seek your advice on whether or not to respond to it and all you could do was shrug and tell her that it truly was her call
You did assure that you would support her decision no matter what and the smile she gives you is enough to make your chest swell with emotion
When Angela tells you of her decision to go back a couple days later, you only smile and nod, even though you knew that you were sure it wasn’t an easy choice for her to make
As the two of you were traveling to Watchpoint: Gibraltar, you let your hands become corporeal to hold hers comfortingly as she leaned her head on your shoulders and In that moment, you swore to yourself to keep her safe which included something along the lines about you loving her
What you didn’t expect was for Angela to say “Ich liebe dich auch” and it was then that you realized that you had said all of that out loud
When your shock dissipated, you let yourself smile as you squeezed her hand gently and looked out the cockpit window, eager to see what new adventure you and Angela were about to embark on
