And through this war we lost our house, my university was bombed. My whole childhood neighborhood area was completely damaged. We have been displaced to three different places in search of a safer place but unfortunately there's no safer place in Gaza. Everywhere there's bombing, everywhere is dangerous, so we are now displaced in Deir al-Balah. And me and my family lost everything, we have nothing left here in Gaza.

And my mom is very sick also, she is suffering from Lupus and because she has Lupus, she is a kidney failure patient in need of an urgent treatment and care outside of Gaza. The hospitals here is so poor and bad and the quality of her treatment is getting worse and worse because the quality of the hospitals is bad, because of the conditions of the war. So please guys, help my family, we deserve to- we deserve a decent life, we deserve to start a new beginning and deserve a new life.

The changing seasons.

First up: Olmec art at San Lorenzo! Located on the gulf coast of modern Veracruz, a good spot for agriculture. 

Right to left, top to bottom: Colossal Head 1, CH 3, CH 4, CH 5, CH 7, CH 8, Monument 9, Monument 34, Monument 52. All San Lorenzo, early Formative period, 1200-900 BC. 

The colossal heads show very specific features, indicating they were probably actual people, most likely kings. All have headdresses with distinct designs, too. Most have a sort of flat backside, either as a nod to the maize god or because they were meant to be displayed backed up against something, or both. Also many have extensive “dings” (the technical term, lol) in them that are too intensive to have been from weathering. Some seem to have been carved from other art, possibly to give them a quality of that art, and also possibly as mutilation—San Lorenzo was abandoned around 900 BC.

I took crappy notes on Monument 34, but I think it came from the drain system, which was created to deal with seasonal floods. The drain system was apparently shaped like ducks—you can kind of see the wing, and the chest (on the left) has writing on it.

Monument 52 also was related to the drains—the back of the monument has a sort of slide, where water might go. It displays some features of the maize and rain deities, such as the cleft head (maize) and crinkly headdress things by the ears (rain). Also note the downturned lips, which is a very Olmec style of indicating supernatural beings. Finally Monument 9 is possibly the earliest depiction of a ballplayer in Mesoamerica (though that is disputed). It has a very dynamic pose, and possibly had moveable arms at one point. The loincloth and medallion are very similar to later ballplayer attire.

Hello, my name is Rola, and I am a mother of two children living in the Gaza Strip. Our lives were once filled with love, laughter, and dreams for the future. But everything changed on October 7th, when the war shattered not only our home but our entire world.

That morning, my family and I were enjoying coffee together on the balcony. Out of nowhere, an explosion erupted, shaking our home violently. My husband and son ran for cover, falling over each other in panic, while I stood frozen, still holding my cup, unable to process the chaos around me. When I looked out the window, I saw that our neighbor’s house, once filled with life, had been reduced to rubble. Ambulances rushed to the scene as people scrambled to rescue the injured and pull bodies from the debris.

The bombings didn’t stop. At night, the rain poured heavily, and the cold seeped into our bones. I stayed awake, covering my children to keep them warm and praying for their safety. But safety is an illusion here. Another explosion shattered the night, and our neighbors’ home was destroyed. Their children, who had been sleeping peacefully under a blanket, were found lifeless, their cover soaked in blood.

I looked at my children with tears in my eyes and thought, How can I protect you? We had to flee our home with nothing but the clothes on our backs. We left behind my children’s toys, their clothes, and their beautiful bedroom. Everything we had worked so hard to build is gone.

Our Current Reality Now, we are displaced and living in a nightmare. Food is scarce, and prices are unimaginably high—$10 for a kilo of sugar! The fear of death hangs over us constantly. My children deserve a life of joy and hope, not one defined by fear and loss. Why can’t we live like everyone else—go to work, visit family, and watch our children play in safety? Why do our children have to grow up surrounded by death and destruction?
