requested by @ghostofstudentspast where Cedric is anxious to meet the reader's slytherin parents--hope you like <3

warnings: tbh none? the slytherin part is more in regards to the parents, but i think there is a brief mention that the reader is. but that's it!

word count; 1300+

“What if they hate me?”

“Cedric!”

“Well, what if they do?!”

Cedric had been a paranoid, question-asking mess that past week, and all over the thought of meeting your parents. The perfect and polite Hufflepuff had the audacity to be afraid that any parent would dislike him or think him a bad influence. Your contrasting houses had always been a source of insecurity when it came to your families. You had kept your own anxieties to yourself when you were asked to meet his parents, but the Hufflepuffs had taken a keen liking to you. His father was eager to invite you again and take you on his favourite hiking trails, which had both embarrassed and delighted Cedric.

But he could not get it out of his head that your Slytherin parents would disapprove of the house he’d been sorted into, and therefore him. Even though you’d written to them about your boyfriend and talked profusely of him when you went home, Cedric still was adamant that he wouldn’t be good enough. Past all irrationalities, he knew his fear had no legitimate foundations, but he couldn’t help but side with the illogical.

“Cedric, if you’re good enough for me, then you’re more than enough for them. They’re going to love you,” you beamed, securing your arms around his neck.

Cedric groaned, leaning down to peck your lips and bump his nose against yours on the way back up. Then, he turned back to his small suitcase and patted down the clothes on top, making room for two books. He shook his head, tossing the clothes out and resigning to rearrange the suitcase all over again with a huff.

“Merlin, Cedric, they’re not going to inspect your suitcase,” you groaned, “And they never would have invited you to stay if they didn’t like you or want to meet you. In fact, I think they were rather jealous that your parents were getting all the attention,” you explained, pushing Cedric aside so you could fold the clothes he’d thrown onto the bed.

“Well I guess you’re right about the invitation,” he agreed, “but I just don’t want to cock it up.”

“You won’t, now hurry up, or we’ll miss our train.”

“Why are we taking the muggle train, again?” he asked.

“I told you, because our summer house is in a muggle village and there’s no floo network there. It won’t be that bad, they can be really fun!”

The train station was rather empty considering it was the height of summer, though you supposed the peak hour for travel was not at one in the afternoon on a Tuesday. It was all the better for you and Cedric though--no crowds, no noise, minimal stress. You carefully navigated your way to the platform your ticket instructed you to and made sure Cedric was behind or beside you at all times. Finally arriving after a few wrong turns and idle standbys, Cedric slumped onto the wooden bench that overlooked the tracks. The speaker above played a woman’s voice and informed any potential passengers of the train’s arrival time.

“Not long to wait, then,” you remarked, sitting beside Cedric.

Cedric wrapped his arm around your shoulders and kept your suitcases close to his legs. Three trains passed by while you were waiting for yours, and every time Cedric moved to get up. You laughed softly each time, pulling him back down on the bench with a simple ‘not yet’. A modest blush graced his cheeks, which only made your laugh more audible, but he didn’t mind at all.

“This one’s ours,” you said, nodding to the train headed towards the platform.

Cedric picked up both of your suitcases and walked slowly to the train which was slowing down in front of you. The metal doors opened and a queue of passengers strolled off and into the summer’s day, either eager to get home or enjoy their holiday. Both you and Cedric waited with a smile as the last of the passengers left the train before boarding yourselves, and reaching to put your luggage on the racks overhead.

You situated yourself on one side of the table, a seat your father had managed to snag early on, and Cedric seated himself opposite you. He took the opportunity to observe the muggle transportation--the carpeted seats, the plastic tables that were sparsely scattered, how there were no compartments and everyone was forced to listen to everyone, which he could only imagine was much worse when the train was busy. But, he was pleasantly surprised by the many similarities, and with the ticket warden that came to visit them halfway through their journey.

“So we could have gotten this far for free and they’d have never known until now?” he asked, slightly concerned at the lack of security.

“Well, yes, but we probably would have been fined more than the actual ticket costs. Unless we shoved the warden over, made a run for it and managed to get past the train station’s security. That is if we even knew our way out of a foregin train station that we’d never been to before. But theoretically, yes,” you teased.

“Oh,” Cedric laughed, “So, not really.”

“Not really, no,” you grinned, “Anyway, we’re nearly there, only about ten minutes to go,” you pointed out excitedly.

You were happy to be going home and finally being able to introduce Cedric to your parents, show him the summer home you’d spent countless months in since your childhood, show him your favourite spots, and have picnics at the seaside. But when you looked over, he didn’t look nearly as thrilled as you were; his expression and vacant eyes screamed his anxieties louder than his words ever could. You could read him as easily as the pages of a beloved book, cherished, protected, and well-loved.

“Cedric,” you cooed, reaching your hands out over the table and rubbing your thumbs over his knuckles, “I promise you, they’re going to adore you. Now don’t worry, and trust that I know my parents,” you smiled softly, encouraging him to reciprocate.

When the train came to a stop, Cedric lifted your luggage from above and handed your suitcase to you, offering you to lead the way off of the train. Looking out through the windows as you walked down the narrow aisle, you searched for your parents in the small crowd that had gathered beside the oncoming train. It was a rather popular stop, which meant more faces to skim over until you found the ones you recognised.

You stepped off onto the platform, still looking for your parents--it was rare for them ever to be late, especially when you were coming home. Sure enough, a couple rounded the corner just a few moments after you planted your feet to concrete and greeted you with warm smiles and open arms. Your mother hugged you first, then your father, leaving Cedric standing awkwardly next to you with somewhat laboured breathing.

“Cedric, dear, it’s so nice to finally meet you. I’ve just heard so much about you,” your mother greeted, wrapping him in a bone-crushing hug.

Cedric laughed as his body was squeezed against your mother, who was considerably smaller than he was, but he expressed what a pleasure it was to meet her too, and shook your father’s hand with equal vigour.

“Good handshake, but it will take more than that to make a good impression, mind,” your father teased, catching Cedric off guard.

“Yes, of course,” cedric replied, seriously.

“Leave him alone, darling,” your mother scolded, eliciting a chuckle from your father.

A quick pat on the back and a transference of luggage to your father’s hands, and Cedric’s nerves had been relieved significantly. Your parents wandered off in front, leading the way to your rental car while you intertwined your fingers with Cedric’s, tilting your head up to his.

“Trust me, they like you.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah,” you affirmed, watching Cedric release a breath, sure that he was now filled with pride and relief, and lifting his hand, you kissed the back of it in quiet reassurance.
