my pain is from my beloved and my cure as well
the heart was sacrificed to them and life as well
whatever they say is better than virtue
my beloved has this and that as well (1)
in remembrance of the one who, to spill our blood
broke the oath and the promise as well
friends, I speak from behind curtains
It shall be told to legends as well
like the blissful nights of union came to an end
the times of separation will end as well
both worlds are nothing but the expression of his splendor (2)
I told you that which is exposed and that which is hidden as well
there is nothing certain about the ways of the world
and not in the spinning of fate as well
the lover is unafraid of the judge, bring the wine
and the punishment of the court as well (3)
the mohtaseb (4) knows that Hafez is in love
and the minister of the kingdom of Solomon as well
hafez - ghazaliyat
---------------------
1) has virtue and that which is better than virtue as well.
2) literally translates to the glow of his face. I used his but farsi pronouns are gender neutral (and he’s talking about god here who also doesn’t have a gender).
3) he’s not afraid of the judge or the punishment that the court would give him.
4) religious police. At some point in history, there were people who were responsible for “guarding morality” and were separate from the police that dealt with state laws. One of the things the religious police dealt with was the consumption of alcohol.

You came, you who I would die for, but why now?
you who is disloyal, why now that I’ve fallen to my feet (1)
you are the medicine that has arrived after Sohrab’s (2) death
you who is stone hearted, you could have wanted this sooner, why now?
my life isn’t long enough for your todays and tomorrows
why leave things till tomorrow when I’m your guest today
my darling, I gave my youth to your coquetry
now go be coquettish with the youth, why me?
alas for these short and uncertain lives
why ignore the me who has gone insane because of your love so much
I asked with my head low with the eagerness of Farhaad (3)
oh sweet (4) lips, why give a bitter, vague answer
oh night of separation, where my eyes didn’t sleep for a moment
why do you keep singing lullabies to my sleepy fate
the sky is in chaos like the gathering of lovers
I’m amazed that the world doesn’t fall apart
in the autumn where you are away from the flower, oh sorrowful nightingale
silence is the way of loyalty, why are you creating chaos
oh Shahriyar, you shouldn’t have gone on a journey without your beloved
this journey is to the afterlife, why go alone
Shahriyar - Ghazaliyat
------------
1) it means when hardships finally manage to break you and you can’t get up again
2) a historical figure from the shahname who got killed by his dad. His dad finds out that the person he injured is his son so he sends people to get medicine but the king, being wary of them, makes sure that the medicine arrives late so that his son dies.
3) Farhaad is another historic figure from the story of Shirin and Khosrow who loved Shirin so much, he carved a stone mountain (mount bisotun) by himself and even dug a tunnel through it for her and later he gets tricked into thinking that she has died and kills himself.
4) Shirin is the name of the woman who Farhaad loved and the name means sweet.

oh wine bearer spin the cup and distribute
for love seemed easy at first but then fell problems
to the scent of the blossom that the morning breeze spreads from her hair
from the waves of her incense like hair, such blood fell from hearts
in my beloved’s home, how can I be joyous in peace when with every breath
the caravan bell shouts “pack your bags”
colour your prayer mat with wine if the elder of the mystics says so
for he isn’t without knowledge of the ways of the houses
the dark night, the fear of waves and such a frightening whirlpool
how would they know how we feel, the people without much to carry by the shores
I’ve done everything as I’ve wanted, it will inevitably bring notoriety in the end
the secret that is made into gatherings will never remain hidden
if you want a presence don’t stay away from him, Hafez
once you’ve reached what you want, leave the world and pass on
Hafez - ghazaliyat

I’m a tear but I’ve fallen to the feet of those who are dear
I’m a thorn but I’m resting peacefully under the shade of a flower
With the memory of your scent and colour, oh new spring of love
like a pansy, I’ve lowered my head to my collar (1)
like dirt, in your air (2) I’ve rose from the ground
like a tear, behind you I’ve ran eagerly (at full speed)
I’ve never seen the beauty of youth in my life
I’ve only heard stories of youth from others
from the cup of blessings, I’ve never taken a sip
from the branch of dreams, I’ve never picked a flower
the sky didn’t give me my white hair for free
I’ve bought this string for the price of youth
oh cypress (3) whose feet are bound, don’t boast of your freedom
I’m the one who is truly free for I’ve cut ties with the world
if I runaway from people’s sight rahi (4)
don’t find fault with me for I’m a deer who has never seen people
rahi-e-moayeri - ghazaliyat
1- sign of shame or embarrassment
2- can mean presence but can also mean air in a literal sense (saying he/she is like air)
3- symbol of freedom and independence
4- the poet’s alias which means a path

oh heart, contemplate from the ups and downs of the times
within exuberance, contemplate the shortage of leafs and loads
from a breeze the book of the times changes pages
contemplate the page turning of night and day
on the edge of the roof of danger, one cannot sleep in peace
if you want safety contemplate the peak of credibility
the door becomes lacking when the moon is complete
when your cup is full from wine, contemplate
the smell of blood comes from the torment of two halves of the heart
have mercy on your life, from this zolfaghar(1) contemplate
seeking isolation has many headaches waiting to ambush
within an environment full of chaos and enthusiasm, contemplate from the sideline
the fly drinks the blood of people from staying up all night
therefore contemplate the devotee who stays up all night
saeb e tabrizi - ghazaliyat

fire is not that from whose flame the candle laughs
fire is that which consumes the harvest of the moth
no one has removed the veil from the face of thought like hafez
such that they have combed the tips of speech's hair by his pen

for years the heart asked us for the all showing cup (1)
and what it had itself, it begged for from strangers
the pearl which is outside of the shell of time and space
it ask for from the wanderers of the shore

I am so bound (1) to your love
that It is like I’m a deer whose head is tied
sometimes I cry for the cureless pain
sometimes I laugh at the unfixable state (2)
from love, there is no sanity left for me and no ear
so that I hear the advice of the sane
all of a sudden patience came short
I threw the story of love to the desert
I’m not crazy enough (3) to cut my heart from the friend
if you are sane then don’t give me pointless advice
no painter thinks like this (4)
refuge in god for I won’t think like this
how many lives and bodies were worn down in your path
I’m not the only one who is enslaved and in need
you came back without an alternative and disappointed (5)
if you came back again, you who is my good fortune
if you call to me while I’m lying in the grave
my hurting consciousness would find peace
I have a head that is willing to be sacrificed for the dirt beneath your feet
whether you bring me peace or harm
and if in hardship for Saadi, there is comfort for you
I would like this injustice for myself
Saadi - ghazaliyat
----
1) the actual expression is “feet being tied”
2) the state of things or the state of the person being horrible and incapable of getting better
3) can also be read as I’m not the kind of majnoon (person who has become crazy from love) to cut my heart from love
4) literal translation is something like draw a face like this
5) unsuccessful and without your wish being fulfilled
