2022 kdrama/movie roundup!

It was a tough year for keeping up with anything because life, toddler, etc, but here are the things I watched, in part or whole, that I remembered. Hot Takes Incoming!

Sell Your Haunted House - Jang Nara in boots. Kang Mal-geum in dark lipstick. Touching, gay, many mother issues. The girls were fantastic. The boys weren't bad.

25 21 - I was dropped back into the 90s. Surprisingly, I didn't hate it. The girls were fantastic. Na Hee-do was correct to dump Baek Yi-jin. Moon Ji-woong, perfect boy. Ji Seung-wan for PRESIDENT!

Why Her? - Someone thought it'd be a great idea to throw Seo Hyun-jin's ex-client (shudder) current-student (TRIPLE SHUDDER) Hwang In-yeop into the romance mix when billionaire CHOI YOUNG-JOON and Crown Prince Bae In-hyuk were already there. And they thought it'd be funny if Hwang In-yeop won. NO.

Eve - The superior commentary this year on the horrors of capitalism. It ends with reparations (Park Byung-eun hands over his entire empire to Seo Yeji, who promptly divests it), rich people dying in horrible ways and Seo Yeji doing the tango. Were the makjang knobs dialled up so high they're broken? Yes. Was it fun? YES, because I got to see Park Byung-eun's range, which includes Pained Hottie, and Seo Yeji running men's feet over in cars wearing couture. We can ask for no more.

Juvenile Justice - No one asked "What happens if we take three of the most charismatic working actors in Korean entertainment today and squeezed the life out of them?" But someone answered anyway.

My Liberation Notes - Lee El, a revelation. Mr Gu, a revelation when he started talking, and not the good kind.

Grid - Kim Mu-yeol. Kim Ah-joong and Jang So-yeon had a great year. I didn't understand the time thing at all. This is a me problem, but probably the only time I'll face it this year. Right? RIGHT?

Bloody Heart - Jang Hyuk has done nothing wrong, ever. The girls were fantastic. Lee Joon, I heard your script was meant for Lee Joon-hyuk. Sorry.

Pachinko - The girls were fantastic. Kim Min-ha, baby, you're gorgeous. JUNG EUN-CHAE was everything. Sorry to Lee Min-ho, who had the tough double role of acting as Ko Hansu and also like he belonged to this cast of greats.

Our Blues - Great acting, but my own blues were sufficient for me. The girls were fantastic. Unwanted to wanted pregnancy storyline: no thanks. This is a me problem, but probably the only time I'll face it this year. Right? RIGHT?

Extraordinary Attorney Woo - 75% love; 25% NOT THIS AGAIN.

Little Women - The girls were fantastic. I ran out of air by this point in the year. I'll come back for you, gothic interior design, poison orchids, and Song Joong-ki in the best role he's played all year!

Through the Darkness - Almost too many twirling moustache psychos and dead girls. I did it for Kim Nam-gil because he's so pretty in this and in case it wasn't abundantly clear by now, I don't think with my brain. The lone living girl - Kim So-jin - was fantastic. Jin Seon-kyu, well-adjusted stealth hottie!

Reborn Rich - Samsung owes Lee Sung-min its entire semiconductor business as @rain-hat said. Lee Sung-min owes me reparations for making me watch this show for him primarily (secondarily Park Hyuk-kwon, Kim Shin-rok, Park Ji-hyun and Kim Nam-hee for their acting; Kim Young-jae because he is THE DILF). I'm manifesting NO TIMESLIPS in 2023 dramas.

Under the Queen's Umbrella - Kim Hye-soo pushing up her hanbok sleeves to carry babies and do embroidery should be projected onto my tombstone unto eternity. The girls were fantastic. And I know this is unusual, so bear with me, but: the boys? FANTASTIC ALSO.

Movies:

Vikram - Fahaadh Faasil, my thoughts are nasty and you don't want to hear them. The girls might have been fantastic had they been permitted to live and not be dumdums. That was never going to happen, of course. There was torture and a baby in significant peril, but it was also the most fun I'd had in a while. I should get my head checked.

Ponniyin Selvan - The sheer scale of work and sweat that has gone into the enterprise of making Vikram seem taller than Trisha Krishnan for the last twenty years! Iconic. The girls were fantastic.

The Naked Kitchen - This is sold as a story of a woman choosing between two men. That is a lie. It's about a man coming to terms with his marriage drifting into polyamory, and enjoying it. Shin Min-ah and Ju Ji-hoon fuck in a museum, which was also weirdly sweet.

Asura City of Madness - AHJUSSHIS WHY. Hwang Jung-min's shirttails worked very hard in 2012. Jung Woo-sung ate glass and has pathological issues about being as handsome as he is. We love him for it. We did not love this.

Hunt - Love is your bestie learning how to write and direct just to write and direct you in the role of a lifetime for you, personally. I don't know if that's what happened here, but that's what love is. And chemistry is whatever these two guys have in this completely ordinary movie that did not give any feelings. Hwang Jung-min, pussy OUT.

Decision to Leave - A well-deserved love letter to Tang Wei, just beautifully shot, gorgeous.

Il Mare - Absolutely lovely little film, reliant almost entirely on the star power of two actors who are so charismatic they don't need to meet in the movie to convince you of their romance.

Laal Singh Chaddha - There was a very beautiful wedding at the end. Aamir Khan's face must hurt.

Darlings - A movie that appreciated and respected noted hottie Shefali Shah.

List of series about revenge, justice, revenge-justice and solving mysteries (Warning: Spoilers)

If you're as vindictive as I am but still like a happy ending, these maybe for you. (Don't worry, I've never actively tried to ruin someone's life irl...yet)

Also, if you're like me, once you get hooked on one genre or type of series/movie, you'll probably want to watch more similar items.

So, whether you want to kick back with a relaxing series about revenge/murder or you want to take notes for your own revenge, here's a list of series about revenge/solving mysteries that I've watched recently:

1. Taxi Driver (2021-) starring Lee Je-hoon, Kim Eui-sung, Pyo Ye-jin, Jang Hyuk-jin, Bae Yoo-ram

I mean, it's starring Lee Je-hoon. Need I say more? Ok fine. He's an ex-militant that had a loved one murdered. He groups together with like-minded people that seek revenge but for other people who are experiencing similar pain as they are. It's thrilling but also ridiculous, funny, goofy, and very satisfying. i.e. The good justice-seekers always win. I mean, what they're doing to get justice puts them in a gray area at best. But still better than the soulless that they go after.

2. Bulgasal: Immortal souls starring Lee Jin-wook, Kwon Nara, Lee Joon, Gong Seung-yeon, Jung Jin-young, Park Myung-shin, and Kim Woo-seok

3. The Untamed starring Xiao Zhan, Wang Yibo

Based on the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, Wei Wuxian's spirit is summoned 16 years after his death to seek revenge for the summoner. On his quest, he unravels the common enemy that was responsible for his own demise. The theme starts with revenge but it's so much more than that. If you love slow-burn love and chemistry bursting through the screen without uttering a single word, this is for you.

4. Birth of a beauty starring Han Ye-seul, Joo Sang-wook, Jung Gyu-woon, Wang Ji-hye and Ha Jae-Sook

Sa Geum-ra, played by Ha Jae-Sook, is kindhearted and overweight (this is a plot point) housewife that's married to Jung Gyu-woon's character, Kang Joon. The latter is cheating on the former with Wang Ji-Hye's character. Long story short, she loses weight to win back her husband's affections but ends up seeking revenge because... find out for yourself. It's funny, ridiculous and goofy and the plot kept me at the edge of my seat. The series does drag a little during the last three or so episodes. The plot is mainly based on revenge, infidelity, and fat-shaming. As someone who grew up being dubbed "fat," "pig" etc. even when I wasn't and later when I eventually was, Sa Geum-ra's pain of feeling unlovable simply because of her size was something I related to greatly. Which leads me to my next recommendation:

5. Switched starring Kaya Kiyohara and Megumi Seki

Kaya Kiyohara is Ayume whose body gets switched with that of Megumi Seki's character. The latter is the "invisible" archetype while the former is the popular, pretty girl. This series explores an interesting perspective (mindset) that challenges that of Birth of a Beauty.

6. Cafe Minamdang

I loved the goofy satire elements of this series. And the ending was satifisfying but admittedly, sometimes the episodes had a tendency to drag the plot on and I had moments when my attention was elsewhere. But I still recommend it.

7. Girl from Nowhere starring Chicha "Kitty" Amatayakul as Nanno

Nanno seems to be an entity of some sort (think Eris, Goddess of Chaos) that infiltrates school after school after school while seeking "social justice." Nanno doesn't pick sides but it has a righteous tone "holding up the mirror to hypocrites." The overall theme isn't evident until about 3 episodes later. Kitty gives a truly enchanting performance as Nanno.

8. The Glory starring Song Hye-Kyo, Lim Ji-yeon

How could I possibly forget the Glory? But I did while writing this list. However, it is one of the best series I've watched. I've liked Lim Ji-Yeon since her movie Obsessed starring opposite Song Seung-Hyeon. She was so natural and convincing that as much as I liked Lim Ji-Yeon, I hated her character so much. Unpopular opinion: While I really like the actor Lee Do-hyun as well as his character, I feel like I could've done without the latter in the movie. His character was really sweet towards Song Hye-Kyo's Dong-eun and very supportive. Bf material, he accepted her with all her flaws. That's all a girl can ask for. However, I feel like his character had nothing to do with the main story and that I would have been fine if he weren't in it.

9. Celebrity

The revenge plotline comes much later. But each episode was so enticing and left me at the edge of my seat. However, they dragged the plotline in the later episodes and the ending was a bit disappointing. So this is on my recommendation list but with a grain of salt.

10. Flower of Evil

The last one is more or less about revenge. But it is about solving a mystery and clearing up one's name. This one made me hella confused and got me hooked. I really like the characters' chemistry. The ending could've been better but great series overall albeit very bittersweet.

she’s pretty sure she’s watched every episode of ‘73 questions with vogue’—well, all of the ones with korean subtitles at least. and while this interview isn’t exactly like that, to danbi, it’s pretty damn close enough.

“hello! i’m crystallis’ leader, geum danbi,” she introduces herself with a smile and a wave; her other hand gingerly holds up the packet of paper with various questions she’s assigned to answer—and with her name already boldly written out at the very top for the audience to clearly see. with a hum, she skims over the first page of questions before she glances back up at the camera. “this kind of feels like a test, doesn’t it? thankfully there’s no chance of failing, since all of the questions are about me, right?”

setting the leaflet down in front of her, danbi begins with, “age? hmmm, can i keep it a secret?” she suggests with a pout, to which the writer behind the camera silently mouths ‘no’ to danbi in reply. 

“i’m twenty-four,” she finally reveals after a slight pause; her tone is slow and level, keeping in pace with the speed of her hand scribbling (as fast as it can) down each answer she repeats aloud. “i was born in daejeon, and i have two younger brothers and three younger sisters: danyool, bohyun, bora, nabi, and narae.”

satisfied thus far, danbi nods her head as she reads ahead for the next set of questions. “hobbies? i guess... cooking?” she confesses after some thought. “i cook a lot in the dorm for the girls, to make sure we’re eating well and healthy even on the days when we don’t have many schedules... but to be honest, a lot of the crystallis members take turns cooking for the group in the dorm, so thinking about it again, that doesn’t really count as a hobby now, does it?”

she giggles before continuing on. “my strength is my... seniority? and my weakness is, uhh, my age? which are both pretty much the same thing, huh?” there’s a bashful chuckle that follows her words, as danbi herself even doubts her own half-joking, half-serious answers.

“my interest nowadays is reading; i remember as a kid, i would read for fun a lot, but school and eventually training made me lose a lot of interest in reading in general. but now that we’ve debuted and i’ve become the leader of crystallis, i’ve been reading a lot of books to better myself outside of just singing, dancing, and performing.”

there’s a lick of her lips now, an unconscious reaction to how dry her mouth is now after how much she’s been speaking thus far. thankfully, she’s reached the last question on the very last page. “an ability of a member’s i envy... hmm... i think i’m most jealous of astrid’s bright energy. even when we’re all super tired after a long reheasal, astrid is always cracking jokes and cheering us up to get through the day—so it’s always empty whenever she’s not around, and that’s a kind of presence i’m envious of.”

danbi finishes writing down the tail-end of her final answer, to which she excitedly pushes the papers away to lean back in her seat and raise her arms up in relief. “and... finished!”
