A get definitely does require the husband's consent. This has been an enormous point of contention and strife in the orthodox community in recent years, since some men will refuse their wives a divorce essentially trapping them and not allowing them to remarry (there are some excellent activists within the community doing a lot to help free these women). Ancient Israel was not an egalitarian bastion of women's rights, although better than many other nearby polities.
Explaining a "gett" (גט) to my gentile wife, this post was early into the conversation.
Me: it's basically a way for women to escape bad marriages without having to depend on the husband's consent it also allowed her to have some of his possessions and stuff...
Her: So ancient Jews gave women rights?
Me: I mean they still had to talk about it with their Rabbi and have him talk to her about it...
Her: but like the wife wasn't left in a tower or killed, she had the ability to leave her *bad* husband and not be penniless...
Me: basically.
