what your tma patron entity says about you
the buried: your worst fear is having to make small talk inside an elevator. specifically, making small talk in an elevator with more than one other person in it.
the corruption: your room is either a fucking mess or immaculate beyond belief. you watched the movie holes as a kid and it’s a major point of nostalgia for you now.
the dark: you have one of those light-up salt crystals in your room because your curtains are always closed and you need to be able to see. black is a color and it’s your favorite. you were a goth kid in high school.
the desolation: you burned shit with a magnifying glass when you were a kid. you take joy in setting mousetraps and using a little bit too much raid to kill roaches. you made “potions” as a kid out of household cleaning supplies and shit you found in your backyard.
the end: you either were or are an mcr stan. where the dark was the goth kid, you were the emo kid. perhaps you still are. either way, it sits in you. waiting for the day when you finally let it out once again.
the eye: you say you don’t like to get involved with drama. you totally do. if you found tma with a large backlog, you consumed it like, all at once. now, you listen to every single episode the second it comes out. you watch far too much youtube. you like the sound of your own voice, but you don’t talk a lot.
the flesh: you like to watch makeup and sfx artists. or maybe you are one. you were one of the “let’s rp as vampires at recess” kids in middle school. because of this, you also probably read or watched twilight.
the hunt:  you’re one of those people who watches serial killer documentaries for hours on end. you like werewolves and other cryptids, like, a lot. you didn’t have a ton of friends growing up, but you would kill to protect the few that you had.
the lonely: you probably have depression or some other kind of mental illness. you own a lot of those little incense sticks. you’re a night owl. you enjoy the way neon signs reflect off of puddles. you follow sad simpsons accounts and stuff like that on instagram.
the slaughter: you watched people play call of duty on youtube as a kid. now, you watch long-form cooking videos like “how to slice every fruit.” it’s stereotypical, but you like the color red. specifically, deep, dark red. like you’d see in beets.
the stranger: you were a theatre kid. you like show tunes and billy joel. you watched salad fingers and don’t hug me i’m scared when you were younger. you were fascinated with creepypasta, especially early slenderman stuff.
the spiral: my friend, you are full-blown paranoid. and you know it. you know exactly where everything is in your house. you’re impeccably organized, until the day you’re not, because you’re just not feeling it. then everything falls apart. you listen to “hippie music,” so uh, take that for what you will.
the vast: you have either social anxiety or a god complex. you have, at minimum, three existential crises per day. but they come so frequently that by now, you’re used to them.
the web: you’re into knitting. you’re also terrifyingly alert and aware of your surroundings. you find humor in lying to people and waiting for them to figure it out. you like chess. you can solve a rubik’s cube with relative ease. and of course, you’re afraid of spiders.
the extinction: you like watching how it’s made, like, a lot. you like nature, and you follow a bunch of those “abandoned places” photos accounts on twitter. you subject yourself to horror movies, to the point where now, you’re completely desensitized to them.

Shades of Truth: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 - -Everyone has secrets, Roman knows this. But after dealing with Deceit in the most recent video and discovering that Virgil doesn’t like liars…he decides to come clean with a secret he’s been hiding from the other Sides.

Contained-Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 -You know what they say about Creativity. It’s best if it’s locked away.

Three chances to fix past mistakes. Three chances to totally screw it all up. But who said life is worth living unless one takes a little risk?

A Hero’s Rescue Part 1  Part 2 -After being defeated in battle, the last thing Roman expects is to have a soaking wet hero show up at his doorstep.
The Beginning -Creativity has an idea. A wonderful, awesome idea. Now…if only Creativity could focus enough to make the idea a reality.
Little Lies - Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  Part 4  -All he’d been looking for when he’d revealed himself to Thomas was a little less work. One less secret to hide. One less thing to keep Thomas from knowing because his host didn’t want to know. To say it had backfired for Deceit was a bit of an understatement.
White Lies - Part 1  Part 2  Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 -Sequel to Little Lies -Deceit has been stuck in his ‘role’ as Dilyn for almost a year now. It’s about time he changed that.
CatScratch - Virgil’s learned to expect a lot of things helping the police solve murders, but he never thought that they’d actually find something that could crack his own unsolved case.

The Grade -Patton: I’m sorry I graded your tests in magic marker, but I just felt like it.
Seeking Warmth -If he’d known he’d be spending the rest of eternity freezing to death on Earth, Deceit would never have left Hell in the first place.
Spilled Milk -Logan never expected to get in the middle of a fight while at the self-checkout of a grocery store.
Egg-stenuating Circumstances -Why is it that the simplest of quests for Roman always end up more complicated than they should be?
The Rise of Deceit -With the Dragonwitch destroying the kingdom, the Crown Prince has a difficult choice to make.
Tattered -Part 1  Part 2 -Left to fend for himself, Roman can’t trust anyone…right?
Raindrops and Cookies -Most people would only be focused on getting themselves out of the rain. Patton isn’t most people.
A Special Delivery -Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  - “The stork brings the baby to deserving parents.” He whispered, quoting the words from memory. “All the lost, forgotten, and alone.”
In These Tangled Webs: Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  Part 4  Part 5  Part 6  Part 7  Part 8  Part 9  Part 10  Part 11 -It should be easy admitting to your roommates that you’re not entirely human. Only in Logan’s case it’s not. Not when he discovers that Patton is afraid of Spiders.
The Old Hoodie - 2 sentence prompt –Thomas glared at Virgil, eyes filled with hate, and held out Virgil’s old hoodie, obviously expecting him to take it and go back to who he used to be. “I don’t trust Dark Sides.“
I Miss The King: Part 1  Part 2 -2 sentence prompt -“I miss you… I miss the King” a sigh “Apparently, it’s the same for me.”
Infinitesimal -Logan isn’t quite sure why Roman thinks he needs his help at three in the morning.
To Break A Curse: 2 sentence prompt -Logan looked at Roman, eyes dark. “I need you to really think about what you’re saying, because you’re going to hurt Virgil even more if you do not.“
Shutting Down -Having your phone die shouldn’t be that big of a deal…right?
Anxious to Touch - Virgil ca’t be around the others without hurting them, so he has to stay away. Only Deceit won’t let him do that.
The Path: A Tale of Trick or Treating - Remus(1) Patton(2) Emile(3) Remy(4) ???(5) Logan(6) Roman(7) Virgil(8) Diva(9) Duke(10) Prince(11) Picani(12) Logic(13)  Deceit(14) ???(15)  -2nd person pov. -You’ve been trick or treating at the Sanders Side’s homes for as long as you can remember, but this year things get a bit more…complicated.
The Interview: Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  Part 4 Part 5 -A normal day at StoryTime! Inc. takes an unexpected turn when Logan goes to investigate why his coworkers have made a bet using Crofters as the prize.
Virgil’s Interview: -It’d been his dream to work for StoryTime! since he was a kid, and now finally, Virgil may be able to make it come true. Note: Virgil’s pov of Chapter 3 in The Interview.
The Olive Branch -They used to celebrate Christmas Eve without Anxiety there to ruin things. But this year Roman plans to change that.
These Black Wings -An hour ago Patton had been loved, wanted, celebrated. Now? He’s on the run for his life thanks to the large black wings that sprouted from his back.
Chimney Sweep -Sure. It’s great to be able to see visions of missing children…but being able to find them still alive is another thing entirely.
Meeting Romeo -A Prequel to A Work of Art. -It was unfortunate really, but someone had to tell the Romeo standing on the street that his Juliet he’d come to listen to day after day no longer lived in the apartment complex. It might as well be Virgil.
Dance with Me -Patton’s never had a father figure to bring to his ballet class for Valentine’s Day like all the other kids before. But this year…he might.
A Midnight Conversation -All Virgil expected when he stepped out onto the balcony was to have a quiet moment to himself. Note: Virgil’s pov of ch 2 of White Lies.
Warm Fuzzies -Two Sentence Prompt: Remy thought that he didn’t deserve love, not after everything he’s done. But, when Emile walked through the door to room 127, Remy’s heart skipped an unexpected beat.
A Shadowling’s Happiness  -Two Sentence Prompt: “Where the hell are you going!?” “To the subconscious,  and you can’t stop me.”
Scales- Prologue  Chapter 1   Chapter 2   Chapter 3  Chapter 4  Chapter 5  Epilogue -Deceit hadn’t expected his absence from the Mindscape to be noticed by the others…until Logic knocked on his door.
Mother’s Day -Janus has never liked Mother’s Day.
Wanted -Remus knew one thing for sure. No one would ever want to Want him.
To The Moon - A Vague AU Prompt. -This wasn’t at all how Patton expected their wedding night to go.
The New Hire- Roman has never known his brother, Logan, to break a promise. Until now. Note: Roman’s pov of Chapter 4 in The Interview.
Be My Dad- A Vague AU Prompt -Janus has no interest in being a parental figure to a kid, but trying to convince the universe of that is another thing entirely.
Moonshot-  Was it too much for Logan to ask to have just one date not revolve around sports talk?
The Sweater- Emile had said he was making a sweater for a friend. Only he neglected to tell Remy that this friend wasn’t exactly…well…human.
October ThirST -After seventy years of searching for his Soulblood, Virgil is highly doubtful he’ll find them tonight.
Lemon Drops -Patton just wanted to go somewhere where he wouldn’t be judged, wouldn’t disappoint…wouldn’t…screw up another relationship. (Takes place after SvS Redux)
The Path: A Promise Kept -sequel to The Path: A Tale of Trick or Treating -Trick or Treating may be cancelled this year, but that won’t stop you from keeping a Promise.
The Chaos Twins -prequel moment to The Sweater -Everyone has their hobbies, though Emile wishes his roommates’ hobbies were a little less…explosive.
On the Run -prequel moment to the Sweater -When life gives you an escape attempt, you run as fast and as far as you can to get away.
Nitemear -It’s not considered running away if you’re merely trying to find a more defensible position.
The Key is Confidence -Confidence. That was the key, his father had told him, to getting away with anything.
Among the Branches -Getting woken up at the crack of dawn by your landlord can’t be a good thing. Fractured Trust- Trust is a tender thing, easily made…and just as easily broken. Written for the Two sentence prompt -"Why don't you trust me Roman?" Patton asked tightening his grip on Roman's shirt. "P-Patton I-" Roman stuttered out fearfully.
A Mini’s Pep Talk -It shouldn’t surprise Roman, at this point, that on top of an already no good really really bad day he ends up getting attacked by another Side’s Mini-Me while looking for his own. (Takes place after SVS Redux)
The (K)nightmare -They say that the brain uses Dreams to help understand and solve problems one faces in the waking world.
Demon Comfort -Part 1  Part 2  Part 3 -Lurking under a Human’s bed should be downright dull for a Demon of Logan’s rank. And yet…he can’t help but be intrigued by his human charge.
First Contact - Things would be so much easier if only their human, Virgil, would talk to them.
Meeting Virgil (5x1) - Part 1  Part 2  Part 3 -Five times Remy tried to give Virgil a child and the one time he succeeded. A Special Delivery Prequel.
Catch Me (If You Can) - Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 -Remy would not allow himself to be seen as needy and helpless in front of the general masses. He had an image to uphold. One of perfect health, snarky comebacks, and general sassiness. He didn’t get sick.
Beneath the Moon - Part 1  Part 2 Part 3 -After all the research he’d done, after all the signs he’d been experiencing. Logan needed someone to tell him he wasn’t crazy. And Roman…Roman had always been the one most likely to believe in the fantastical, the impossible, the…supernatural.
Hello Darkness (My Old ... Friend?) - Part 1  -Is it possible to search for something…for someone…when you don’t even remember that they’re missing?
Dance Break! -Roman suddenly jumped up, a sparkle in his eyes, as he turned, seeking out the first person he can find and holding out his hand. “Dance with me!” (Written with @kieraelieson)
Christmas Eve -Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  Part 4  Part 5 -Of all the barriers that Janus expected to have to overcome in order to get his son a pet for Christmas, encountering his Ex, Roman, working in the pet store had never once crossed his mind.
Code: Blanket -Part 1  Part 2 -A friendship doesn’t stop just because one person decides to act like a dick. Especially when said dick is obviously in trouble.
An Unconventional Defeat -Patton knew that heroes started out young, far younger than villains ever did. But this young?
Into the Fray -It wasn’t like he shouldn’t have expected this. It seemed like any plan involving him and Virgil had a tendency to well…go astray.
No Longer Alone -Growing up in isolation away from people has been all that Virgil’s ever known. That changes today.
A Restless Christmas Eve -Even if it had been five years since he’d appeared in the real world, this still felt like it should have been a Virgil problem and not a Deceit one. He’d never had issues staying asleep before. Let alone ending up wide awake, feeling like he needed to–to–just move. Get out. Because of a stupid storm.
Out Camping - Part 1  Part 2 -A Father and Son Camping Trip.
Sanders Sides Art Portals AU-  Deceit  Roman  Patton Logan  Virgil

You’re My Kid (Natasha Romanoff x Daughter!Reader)
A/N: Had another similar request by an anon, hope you both like it! Also, super sorry it took so long for me to write this request!!
Tumblr media
Avengers Masterlist
Prompt: 100. “You’re My Kid, nothing is going to change that.”
Word Count: 891
Warnings: mentions of parents not accepting their kids.
Tumblr media
Your mother raised you to fear nothing, but that didn’t stop you from fearing the dark or the loud rumbles of thunder when you were smaller. Or how death was inevitable. Yet, with all these fears you had, you had one that you feared the most.
The fear of your mother not accepting who you truly were inside.
You walked out of the theatre, curfew was coming close and you didn’t want the night to end. You looked over at her, she was already stealing a glance at you. You both giggled as you both looked away, continuing your walk down the busy sidewalk of New York. You were determined to walk her to her house, even if you curfew was only minutes away.
“Thanks, again,” she said softly as you walked up the steps with her, “I really had fun.”
You smiled, “I did too,” you said softly. You both remained quiet for a few seconds and before you knew it, she was leaning in. Her lips met yours and you felt head over heels over this first kiss. You both smile as you parted the kiss.
“Text me when you get home?” You nod as you begin to walk away, thinking that you had just had the best night of your life. But unbeknownst to you, someone had been watching you.
When you arrived back at the compound, you knew you were dead. Frankly, though, one of your fears wasn’t the wrath of your mother for being late. That didn’t scare you at all.
Natasha watched as you made your way onto your guys’ floor, her heart ached at the scene she had seen. Her mind wandered to a million thoughts but she pulled on a face, “Y/N,” she said sternly as she flicked on the lamp next to her. “It’s about an hour past your curfew.”
“I know and I’m sorry, I just got caught up with friends,” it panged Natasha, even more, to hear you lie about the reason why you were late.
She gave you a nod, before looking away, trying her best to brush off the tears that were already forming in her eyes. She cleared her throat, “h-how was the movie?”
“Good!” You smiled as you thought back to the kiss, “great!”
She hummed in response, “anything interesting happen while you were out?” You shook your head, “nothing at all?” You shook your head again, confused at her antics. She nodded, “not even the fact that you kissed that girl?”
Your eyes widen at the words that came out of your mother’s mouth, “w-what?”
Natasha sighed, “I saw you and your friend walking and I was trying to catch up,” she began to say, “but then you were both standing there at her door and… and…” she looked over at you, hurt spread across her face, “Why wouldn’t you tell me something like that? I thought we told each other everything! I thought you trusted me with these things! Do you not trust me? Did I ever do something to make you think that I coul-”
“No!” you said interrupting her, “no, you didn’t!” You felt tears form in your eyes. One of your worst fears was the fear that your mother wouldn’t accept you, because you’ve seen it happen before. Mothers not accepting their children for the way the people they chose to love.
“Then why, Y/N?!”
“Because I’m scared you won’t accept me!”
“Won’t accept you?!” Natasha stood up from where she was sitting and quickly walked over to you, engulfing you into a hug, “you’re my kid, nothing is going to change that and I will love you no matter what and accept you no matter who you are.” She slightly let go of the hug, cupping your face with her hands, “and I’m sorry if I ever made you feel otherwise.”
This was all you wanted to hear, you felt so much relief knowing that all your fears were for nothing. You wished you could have told your mother sooner rather than her finding out but you were afraid, but knowing that she accepted you were everything you needed to hear.
“Thank you, mom,” you said softly as she wiped away your tears and kissed the top of your head.
“Now, I want to meet this girl and thr- I mean to give her a nice warning of the-”
You rolled your eyes, “do you mean you want to threaten her if she ever hurts me?”
Natasha chuckled, “yes, I also want her to know that she not only has me to fear but about a handful of other highly trained assassins or gods, or super soldiers… she basically has the Avengers to fear if she ever were to hurt you.”
“Oh gosh, mom!” You scolded, “now I don’t want you to meet her!” Natasha laughed, you knew she was slightly joking. She was protective so, she might give her a fair warning. Fair meaning that she was going to go easy on her.
Natasha sighed as she looked at you, “I’m proud of you, you know that?” You gave her a small nod. She placed a small kiss on your forehead again. Natasha hoped you wouldn’t fear of what she might think of your decisions in your life, all she wanted to do was to support everything you do.

Task 1: Character Questionnaire
A character questionnaire answered in-character by Cooper Newby.
What is your full name; if you have any nicknames, how did you get them?
Cooper James Newby. Uh, my grandfather’s name was James and apparently my Mom got Cooper from a book. Most people call me Coop and my friends in college called me CJ or Newby, kind of a frat thing. I prefer Coop mostly, or Cooper. If I hear Cooper James then I know I’m in trouble, that’s usually something my Mom uses on me.;
When were you born? Have you always lived in Hawkins? What would you call home?
I was born on the 18th January 1962 in Boston Massachusetts. At the age of five I moved to Portland, Maine and spent the rest of my childhood there. I visited Hawkins a lot as my grandparents and Uncle lived there. We’d often come to Hawkins for Christmas but my Uncle would sometimes make the drive up to Maine. He and my Mom were rather close and he helped out a lot. I don’t know what I’d call home, I guess I’m still trying to settle and find it.
Describe yourself; hair colour, eye colour?
Physical description? Dark brown hair, brown eyes, strong jawline, fluffy hair. Uh, this is a little weird, I don’t like talking about myself like this. Personality is also tricky, I guess ambitious, kind, trusting, cheeky. I try and be good, do what’s best and all that but I can’t help being me. I love to wind people up. If they’ve given me good reason to then I’ll find every way possible to irritate them. Most people don’t see that side if we’re just doing pleasantries.
Do you have any distinguishing facial features?
I have a scar in my eyebrow where I face planted the floor after falling out of a tree. It’s healed but if you look close enough you can see a sort of diagonal line in my eyebrow; I think it’s my right, your left. Besides from that, I guess I have prominent cheek bones and jaw lines. I don’t know, let’s move on, this whole topic is just unpleasant.
Who are your friends and family? Who are the people you are or wish you are closest to?
Okay, let’s start from the bottom. There’s me, my Mom is Pamela Newby. Then if we go to my Uncle Bob and my Grandma and Grandpa. I have a friend in Boston that I’ve been friends with all my life, a handful of good friends in Maine and some college pals. Hawkins, I don’t really know many people as the time I did spend here was with family. I’m, I mean I was definitely closest to my Uncle Bob, he was always on my side against my Mom and then I am fairly close to my Mom, even though we’re apart now. I would like to find my father, I’ve never asked for his name and sometimes I wonder if I should. I don’t know, it’s a question I’m not sure I want answering. Kinda like the movies, getting your hopes up for disappointment?
Where do you go when you’re angry?
Anywhere away from what made me angry. I’m a classic case of storming out of the house when angry. I need to just leave or escape whatever is causing that distress. I like knowing where my exits are, just walk away from it all. That usually helps or I get quite heated. I have a hot-head, quite a quick temper. I’m not afraid to get into a fight so it’s best I just go.
Biggest fear? Have you told this to anyone?
Bugs and dirt. I mean, I don’t mind getting muddy and being outdoors, if I am expecting it. There’s nothing worse that getting muddy when you don’t want to be. I wouldn’t say it’s a fear just something I actively avoid. I need to wash my hands if I feel unclean. Bugs I can’t stand, they’re disgusting and tiny and just in your face all the time. Spiders are the worst. My friends know I’m scared of ‘stupid shit’ as they like to put it. They’ve seen me freak out over a fly enough times. Like, dude, just get out of my grill; leave me in my own personal space.
Do you have any secrets?
Anyone who says they don’t are clearly lying. Everyone has secrets. What makes you think I’m going to tell you them? They’re called secrets for a reason, dummy.
Have you ever been in love? Or had a broken heart?
Um, yes. My Uncle always used to say it’s part of growing up.
It’s a Sunday afternoon, what are you doing?
Sunday? Movie day. That’s always been a movie day for me. My Mom used to take me when I was young. Or even like a jazz bar. It would be a day for entertainment. Theatre is also something I’ve loved watching as a kid. So yeah, I’m usually watching movies.
Do you have a strong childhood memory?
I would have to go with the Moon Landing. Damn that was the coolest shit ever for a seven year old, space nerd. I watched it on the television with my family and I was obsessed with rockets. We went to the local bar because we couldn’t afford a television. It was certainly something to witness. I’m envious, I’d love to be an astronaut. The radio communication between the astronauts and Huston were partly what sparked my interest in radio.
Whats your ideal night out? Where are you going? With who?
Oof, good question. Okay... ready? Going to see Queen in concert with my best-friend, Ellie. The one from Boston? Oh man that would be a trip. It’d have to be London too. Apparently nothing is as good as a band in their hometown. Plus, it’s London, man!
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Completing university and surviving three years of independent living. Besides from that it’d probably be the piano recital I did in seventh grade. I worked forever on that song.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Wife, kids, dog.....maybe a cat? I don’t know, it’d just be nice to settle down.
Most treasured possession?
My father’s pocket watch. It’s always been in the family and my mother gifted it to me when I was twelve. Kind of always kept it and it’s been through a lot. I’d be besides myself if I lost it.
What/who is it that you most dislike?
I really dislike idiocy in people. That’s what I like to call it anyway. When people mistreat others or disrespect others for no reason. If you want to be a bully, then I have no time for you. I’d rather call you an idiot and hope that you’re just uneducated enough to make stupid remarks and comments like that, rather than it be intentional. I just can’t tolerate it.
Who do I dislike? I can’t really say that I dislike anyone. Y’know, your general douchebags, people who are arrogant assholes, the usual. I guess I do have a bad taste in my mouth about Joyce Byers, I just- I don’t know. My Uncle was so devoted to her and then suddenly he’s just gone of a heart attack and I’m at his funeral. I just, something doesn’t feel right.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
How much time do you have? Haha! I run my mouth off a lot of times. I suppose my most used word would be ‘dude’ though in the right company I’m terrible for swearing. I swear far too much and often get told off by my mother for it. I just ramble too much. Sorry in advance!
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Ouch, tough question. It’s always the last question. I guess I’d like to give less of a damn about other people. Maybe without them I’d be on to bigger and better things. I’d take more risks, I’d care more about myself and my prospects. That damn Newby gene has me pinned.

SpongeBob SquarePants - The Musical: A Small Memorial
Last night, as often happens, a Broadway show closed. While I wasn’t able to see it’s final performance (Though I was filled in for the details thanks to the incredible @crazy-noonoohead), I did get to see it once, and it absolutely charmed the entire way through. I’m honestly going to miss it.
That show was SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical.
Tumblr media
I know. The jokes have all been said and done. It’s a Nickelodeon show that got a stage adaptation and it doesn’t offer even the pretense of pretending its not for kids. It’s essentially most of what makes up animated movie trailers today. But beyond the jokes, SpongeBob is one of the most aesthetically pleasing, unique, and fun shows out there and I want to give it the respect and honor it deserves here, because believe it or not, it has quite a few elements worthy of said respect and honor.
Now for reference before we begin, I have seen SpongeBob on Broadway live one time, I’ve listened to the cast recording well over twenty times at this point, and I have engaged in my fair share of bootlegs via YouTube.
SET DESIGN
To start, let’s talk about SpongeBob’s greatest accomplishment: Its set design. The set design is effectively delivered on in three ways, and let’s just say that the Tony it got for Set Design could not have been more deserved.
First, on either side of the stage of the show were two intricate mechanisms. If you’ve ever played the board game Mouse Trap, then just think about that in orange and you’ve got an idea of what they were like. One of the mechanisms went off during each act, and what it did was provide more than just a regular set piece: It provided a mystery and an adventure. Not only was it so much fun seeing the mechanisms go off, but the anticipation for them had me so excited. They were unique and gave off this feeling of both peril and comedy.
Second, the set design of the climax of the show (Spoiler alert if you wanted to either read about this somewhere else or hit up a bootleg). Ethan Slater (SpongeBob’s actor) is such a badass. In the climax of the show, he is put in a harness and while singing a powerful song (A character-defining reprise, at that!), needs to basically climb up, through, and around this big and intricate orange spider web. It’s some of the coolest staging I’ve ever seen and while I never saw Spiderman, I also never heard of a single instance of danger with this action so I feel comfortable saying that this is Spiderman done right!
Finally, I want to talk about something pretty simple: The houses. I’m going to lump these things together because the how of what they do here is pretty similar, but incredibly impressive. The houses and establishments like The Krusty Krab here are the only thing done via CGI and the pragmatic effects help to enhance it by never allowing the audience to feel confused about where they are or overcrowded by the larger than life characters.
If you want to continue and read my thoughts on the costume design, music, story, and cultural impact (However personal), please join me below the cut.
COSTUME DESIGN
There are a LOT of characters to talk about in this adaptation and I think they were all designed fabulously. However, for the purposes of keeping this a little brief, let’s talk about the most impressive one to me: Plankton.
Assuming you’ve watched SpongeBob on TV, you know that Plankton is a really small character, and that presents a problem when adapting the TV show to Broadway. How do you adapt Plankton? His size (Or lack thereof) is such an important quality to his character and to not acknowledge that would dilute who he is. While one could simply make him a puppet, none of the other characters are puppets and to make him one would take away all of his menace, something that he would need, even as a primarily comedy-focused antagonist. Additionally, it would severely limit the capabilities of Plankton to perform in musical numbers, especially in his rap number. But the creators did something really smart. In the opening number of the show, while all of the main characters were scaled against their oceanic counterparts, Plankton had a physical puppet counterpart shown in addition to his human actor, a puppet that was abandoned shortly after his introductory scene. That did the job of showing Plankton’s size in a way that the audience would burn into their memory while also allowing the actor to use his entire range of motion. It’s honestly such a smart move.
MUSIC
SpongeBob on Broadway is a collaborative musical. Most every song is original to the show AND was made a different artist. This list includes The Plain White Tees, Panic! at the Disco, David Bowie, John Legend, They Might Be Giants, and Sara Bareilles (But boy is it longer than just that). And here’s what impresses me so much: It’s so cohesive. That’s not to say there aren’t different genres. There are a couple of ballads, a rap, a few ensemble pieces, a rock and roll number, a sea shanty, and a tap number (With multiple legs thanks to Gavin Lee’s incredible talent!!!!). But it retains a flow to it that carries through the entire show. At no point does the SpongeBob musical feel disjointed and given all of that talent working on it, I can’t help but be surprised, even now. Like, how does that work? The music here has no right being this solid and cohesive! Well, I can only assume that the above talents really talked to one another to make sure that no work felt out of place, and honestly, I can’t help but adore that respect for how seriously this was taken from all of them to make sure that there was consistency throughout each and every one of the pieces in regards to the world of SpongeBob and in terms of a full musical.
My favorite piece is “Bikini Bottom Day.” In addition to being visually great, it has this nice buildup as the pieces of Bikini Bottom come together. It starts off with this very faithful-to-the-source-material ukulele and builds to encompass the orchestra, building up the beauty of Bikini Bottom and all of its people as it relates to SpongeBob itself. Everyone’s characterizations are perfectly on display here and the first beats of the characters’ arcs come into play. The motif which is revisited in the Act 1 finale and the finale of the show itself is just nice and optimistic, inviting everyone to think more like SpongeBob, and damnit, when I hear it, I feel like SpongeBob!
STORY
I think the story here is so important, and more important than most might give it credit for. While not overly serious, it does deliver a story that’s deviously more than it seems and in a way that is palatable by its target demographic: children.
SpongeBob on Broadway is about the SpongeBob characters facing the possibility of the end of the world in the face of an erupting volcano, and their various reactions to that. SpongeBob works on combatting the eruption, many of the townspeople try to run, those less committed to running focus on blaming someone for the issue (Sandy, as Plankton puts the value of being the sole land animal in an underwater town), a subset of fish seek wisdom from Patrick, Pearl and Squidward focus on completing their Bucket Lists, and Mr. Krabs and Plankton focus their efforts on profiting off of the panicking masses (Granted for Plankton, it’s in a much more evil way that involves mass manipulation and attempted murder). And throughout this story, there are various ticking countdowns, the aforementioned mechanisms throwing big balls of magma onto the stage, and even the intermission says that it will be the “last intermission...ever.” And that’s all before talking about the two numbers about the possibility of facing the end: “No Control” and “Best Day Ever,” the former of which is one of the most panicked and hopeless numbers I’ve ever heard.
Now, that’s a pretty really-real baseline story with some harsh elements, and honestly, it could’ve gotten pretty dark. But what I like is that it never really did. While not afraid to handle these storylines and aspects and tackle them fully, the show never lost sight of the fact that it’s a SpongeBob musical and being that requires a consistency of a comedic tone as well as an understanding that it’s a musical for children. There are at least five jokes per scene and the show itself ends with a parade of bubbles, a zany band performance, and strings of party paper that falls from the sky! It’s fucking bonkers! And that tonal balance is what makes it so good -- not all time classic-great, but certainly more than enough to merit its own existence.
And that brings us to...
CULTURE
Whenever I see someone picking on SpongeBob on Broadway, even from its inception, I’ve always hated it. I get that SpongeBob on Broadways was somewhat of an absurd notion, but then again, so was The Lion King or Avenue Q, an adult-themed show about puppets, and both of those offered something unique visually as well as through elements like staging, storytelling, and costumes. And in terms of animated adaptations, we’ve had again all but two of the Disney Broadway adaptations. So why did SpongeBob get mocked?
And I’m sure some edgelord reading this is groaning about that the fact that SpongeBob on Broadway is a musical for kids and that I’m unapologetically defending its right to be exactly that, but honestly, fuck that noise. Being for kids does not mean that a musical cannot be great or even tough upon hard subject matter. I mean, look at how some of the more recent Disney animated movies have taken upon harsher subject matter if you need proof of that. What it means is that there needs to be an understanding in the delivery of a message so that one can understand it from an early age without needing to sacrifice storytelling to deliver it. It’s not dumbing down theatre, it’s opening up the door for new people to come in. And there’s no reason why that’s a bad thing. Broadway, like every other medium, thrives off of variety. Just like how there are deep movies like “Citizen Kane,” comedies like “Crazy Rich Asians,” silly films like “Despicable Me,” and superhero movies like “The Avengers” (And blendings of the different genres like “The Dark Knight”), so can there be such a tonal diversity among the shows on Broadway. Hamilton and Phantom are great musicals, but they aren’t and shouldn’t be the only types out there and I like that there’s more out there for kids.
Broadway in its current state, while making changes to foster grander availability, is still a very overpriced and hard to access medium. It’s based on location and even for someone like me who lives in New York, it’s an endeavor that costs at least $50-$60 (That’s assuming I (1) win a digital lottery or have a friend do rush (thanks again @crazy-noonoohead), (2) don’t take a subway or cab, and (3) don’t eat on the trip, and very rarely do those things all happen simultaneously). To be willing to do that, you need to have some serious love or interest in the show, and because of that high bar that people already have to meet in order to just get in the door, it’s not especially approachable to new people. And that’s where shows like SpongeBob come in. Little kids and families go to see the show and come out with so much more. Shows like SpongeBob open doors for lifelong interests in the mastery of theatre and I hope that in the future, when a non-Disney show like this is announced, we remain more optimistic about its potential rather than turning it into a punchline.
While I can’t say it’s for certain intentional, I can’t help but related the song “Not a Simple Sponge” to the public’s outcry towards the show. The chorus invites Mr. Krabs, Squidward, and (by extension) the audience to give SpongeBob a chance to “give me [him] adventure, be a contender, and more” after earlier calling him “just a simple sponge.” I can’t help but see the similarities between SpongeBob’s doubters and the public itself for dismissing the idea of SpongeBob going on a grand staged adventure, as if to say “No, you can’t tell us this story.” But by the end, through the careful delivery of themes (”Everything gets better if you keep on trying”), SpongeBob proves that indeed his is more than a simple sponge and worthy of his claim to The Great White Way.
LET’S WRAP THIS UP
SpongeBob was something that crept up on me. I figured I’d like it well enough, but that it would be something that would follow me, take up about half of my Spotify history, and be something that moved me to make a fairly long post about it? Well, that caught me as a surprise! Hell, I still have a piece of the tissue paper that fell on me during the end of the show and it’s still something I’m going to try to hold on for my remaining days. I probably would’ve attempted for the finale performance alongside my friend had it not been for a car accident that currently leaves me unable to walk. Even still, I’m grateful for the chance to experience this show.
What I’m saying is, SpongeBob on Broadway is “not a simple sponge” and I sincerely wish that it had run longer (With all due respect, I was bored with the Mean Girls bootleg I found in roughly twenty minutes and I was hoping my big yellow friend would stick it out at least until after that closed). For something that was odds are less than half a risk to Viacom, it tried so much harder than anyone expected to and created a memorable show. While I don’t expect a revival anytime soon, it’s going to join some of my mid-tier favorites that Broadway has to offer, along the lines of Legally Blonde and Young Frankenstein. And maybe one day, it will get the respect and love that it truly deserves.
If you’ve never checked out SpongeBob, and by some miracle you’re able to track down a working bootleg or even if you just rock out to the cast recording and a Wikipedia article on the plot, I suggest downing an hour or two and letting the wonders of a “Bikini Bottom Day” consume you.

Time For Heroes, part 2
Well, here it is. This one killed me to write, y’all, I am emotionally drained. Please enjoy.
(notes: one of the scenes is pretty much the Bottom Line Reprise scene, but there’s a twist at the end)
Jack dabbed paint onto the canvas perhaps a little harder than necessary, unintentionally smearing it. He swore under his breath and rubbed at the spot with his paintbrush, but that only made it worse. Shit. He would just have to wait until it dried and try again. Maybe if he-
“There he is, just like I said!” Les was about as quiet as a hammer hitting a metal wall; his voice echoed through the empty theatre and Jack groaned.
He turned toward the rafters, where Les, Katherine, and Crutchie stood. “What’s a fella gotta do to get away from you people?”
“Jack, you can’t just hide in here forever,” Crutchie called, and then Jack heard the telltale thumps of a crutch hitting the wooden stairs. A few moments later, Crutchie was standing beside him, his hand hovering hesitantly over Jack’s shoulder, as if afraid to touch him. “We need you.”
Jack sighed. “What good would I be, Crutch? I ran and you almost got arrested. Hell, the only reason you didn’t was ‘cause of Davey. And now he’s in the Refuge.”
“That’s not your fault,” Crutchie said. Now he let his hand rest on Jack’s shoulder and was glad when he didn’t pull away. “He knew what he was doin’. Davey’s more of a fighter than we give ‘im credit for. He’s gonna be okay.”
“But what if he isn’t?” Jack sat heavily on the crate that held his paints and put his head in his hands. “You didn’t see ‘im, Crutchie. I don’t know what the Spider did to ‘im, but...he couldn’t even come to the window.”
Jack heard a sniff, but when he looked up he saw that it wasn’t Crutchie. Katherine and Les had come down from the rafters at some point, and now Les was quietly crying into Katherine’s skirt. She patted his head comfortingly and glared at Jack.
“Is Davey gonna be okay?” Les whispered.
“Your brother’s a fighter,” Crutchie said with a sideways glance at Jack. “He’s strong. And yeah, they might’a busted ‘im up a little, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be okay.”
“Did you see ‘im, Jack?” Les asked, finally letting go of Katherine and turning towards the older newsie. “Was he hurt bad?”
“I…” Jack stood up and put his hands on Les’ shoulders. “I couldn’t get close enough to ‘im. But there’s another kid in there--looks kinda like you, actually--that goes by the name Sticks...he said Davey’s hurt, but he’s on the mend. Crutchie’s right.” Jack knelt down beside Les and wiped the tears from the kid’s face. “Davey’s a fighter.”
“Yeah.” Les’ face was still red from crying, but he smiled. “Did’ja know that one time, these older kids were pickin’ on me after school? And Davey told ‘em off! They gave ‘im a black eye, but then they didn’t bother me anymore.”
“See? He’s strong,” Katherine said. “And look, Jack, this is why we came.” She reached into her skirt pocket and pulled out a newspaper. “This is the last piece of strike news we managed to print before Pulitzer shut it all down, but it could be enough!”
“Yeah.” Crutchie was grinning. “And we heard back from Brooklyn. Spot says he’s in. So now all we gotta do is tell all the newsies in New York. Get ‘em excited. Get ‘em ready to strike. Maybe a speech or somethin’.”
Jack shook his head. “I’m no good at speech makin’, you know that. Davey’s the talker. How’re we gonna do it without ‘im?”
“I can write you a speech,” Katherine said. “We gather all the newsies...maybe here! Would Medda let us use the theatre?”
“I can ask.” Jack could feel a small smile on his face. “This could really work. We could win.”
Les tugged on Jack’s sleeve. “If we win, does that mean Davey’ll get out of the Refuge?”
“If we win,” Jack said, ruffling Les’ hair, “we’ll make sure that every last kid gets outta that rotten place, including your brother. Now,” he turned to Crutchie and Katherine. “You guys go spread the word. Take Les wit’ ya. I’ll talk to Medda. We hold the rally here. Tomorrow night. And if we’re lucky, we’ll have a real special guest speaker.” He grinned. “I just gotta go convince old man Pulitzer to show.”
---
When Jack walked into Pulitzer’s office that evening like he owned the place, he honestly didn’t know what to expect, especially considering he hadn’t even made it that far the first time. But now, a lady with red hair and glasses actually let him through the doors and led him up the stairs. He followed her through an ornate door and suddenly he was in the fanciest room he had ever seen. But Jack didn’t have time to marvel at the gold-plated grandfather clock that ticked in a corner, or the enormous windows that overlooked the city, because standing behind the desk was just the man he had come to see. Jack took a deep breath and stepped forward, plastering a grin on his face.
“Afternoon, boys!” Jack threw a mock salute in the direction of the other men in the room. They looked uncomfortable.
“And which Jack Kelly is this?” Pulitzer asked with a sneer. “The charismatic union organizer...or the petty thief and escaped convict?”
“Which gives us more in common?” Jack laughed to cover up his nervousness.
“Impudence is in bad taste when crawling for mercy.”
“Crawlin’?” Jack said. “That’s a laugh. I just stopped by with an invite. Seems a few hundred of your employees are rallyin’ to discuss recent disagreements. I thought it only fair to invite you to state your case straight to the fellas. So, what’d’ya say, Joe? Want I should save ya a spot on the bill?”
“You are as shameless and disrespectful a creature as I was told,” Pulitzer said. He glared at Jack. “Do you know what I was doing when I was your age, boy? I was fighting in a war.”
“Yeah? And how’d that turn out for ya?”
“It taught me a lesson that shaped my life. You don’t win a war on the battlefield. It’s the headline that crowns the victor.”
“I’ll keep that in mind when New York wakes up to front page photos of our rally.”
“Rally ‘till the cows come home!” Pulitzer was smiling now. “Not a paper in town will publish a word. And if it’s not in the papers, it never happened.”
Jack was getting angrier, but he tried to stay calm. “You may run this city, but there are some of us who can’t be bullied. Even some reporters.”
“Such as that young woman who made you yesterday’s news? Talented girl. And beautiful as well, don’t you think?”
Jack scoffed. What was Pulitzer getting at? “Yeah, I’ll tell ‘er you said so.”
“No need. She can hear for herself. Can’t you, darling?” Pulitzer gestured to a chair that sat next to his desk, and Jack could practically feel his blood boiling when Katherine stood up, tears in her eyes. “I trust you know my daughter, Katherine.”
Jack barely heard what Pulitzer said next; he was still too shocked. Sure, now that he thought about it, Katherine being Pulitzer’s daughter made a little sense. But if she was related to this money-grubbing scum, why would she care so much about the newsies’ plight? Was she doing it for her father? What did she have to gain?
“Jack, I-” Katherine started to protest, but Jack just cut her off with a glare.
Pulitzer chuckled. “Don’t trouble the boy with your problems, dearest. Mister Kelly has a plateful of his own.” He gestured to a darker corner of the office. “Wouldn’t you say so, Mister Snyder?”
And when the man who had tormented him for years, who had never given up hunting him, no matter how many times he managed to escape, stepped out of the shadows and into view, Jack thought he would pass out from fear. As it was, he turned and tried to run from the office, only to be stopped by the Delancey brothers, who held his arms iron-like grips. And Jack could do was try (and fail) to control his breathing as Snyder stepped closer, an evil grin on his face.
“Hello, Jack,” he said. Jack couldn’t speak past the lump forming in his throat.
“Does anyone else feel a noose tightening?” Pulitzer asked. He paused. “But allow me to offer an alternate scenario: you attend the rally and speak against this hopeless strike, and I’ll see your criminal record expunged and your pockets filled with enough cash to carry you, in a first-class train compartment, from New York to New Mexico and beyond.” He turned to Katherine, who just shook her head. “You did say he wanted to travel west, didn’t you?”
“There ain’t a person in this room who don’t know you stink.” And as he forced the words out, Jack glanced around the office, and he noticed that not only was Katherine close to crying, but the redheaded lady who had met him at the front door was frowning deeply. She looked like she wanted to say something, but stared at the floor instead.
“And if they know me, they know I don’t care,” Pulitzer said in a disinterested tone. “Mark my words, boy. Defy me, and I will have you and every one of your friends locked up in the Refuge. Besides,” he looked at Snyder, “isn’t there already one in there? Davey, isn’t it? Smart child, from what I’ve heard. But I’ve also heard that he isn’t doing too well at the moment.” He turned back to Jack. “Do you really want your arrogance and disobedience to be the reason your friend doesn’t make it out of there alive?”
Jack opened his mouth to say something, anything, but Pulitzer just cut him off. He wasn’t interested in what Jack had to say because he knew he had already won. “Gentlemen,” Pulitzer gestured to the Delanceys, “escort our guest to the cellar so he might reflect in solitude.”
The two brothers nodded, and despite Jack struggling for all it was worth, he couldn’t break free. They muscled him down a set of stairs into a dark, dusty cellar. There were boxes and other things scattered around the dirty space, but the most incredible was the massive, old printing press that sat in the middle. Morris threw Jack against it and laughed when he gasped in pain.
“We been given discretion to handle you as we see fit,” the Delancey snarled. “So behave.”
“Oh, but just in case,” Oscar said. He pulled some metal from his pocket and slipped it onto his hand. “I’ve been polishin’ my favorite brass knuckles.”
“Yeah, yeah, you’re real scary, Oscar,” Jack said with a dismissive wave of his hand. He knew he probably shouldn’t be antagonizing them, but he couldn’t help it. “You and Morris practice your lines together? Make sure they’re coordinated?”
Morris shoved him against the printing press again, and Jack just managed to stifle his gasp when the sharp edges dug into his side. “Shut it, Kelly.”
“What? I’m just sayin’ that maybe you should get some new material.”
And then Jack found out that as tough as he was, he couldn’t hold his own forever against two angry brothers with brass knuckles on their hands and murder on their minds. Fuck, this was going to hurt.
---
Jack guessed Pulitzer probably hadn’t counted on the fact that the small window in the cellar was just big enough for a teenage boy to squeeze through if he didn’t eat daily and his job involved walking miles around the city every day. Once the Delanceys had finally left him alone, Jack had managed to stay awake long enough to take note of the window. Then he had passed out.
When he came to, his head was pounding and his ribs ached, but he slowly stood. There was no time to waste. With more than a few grunts of pain and quiet curses, Jack got the window open and slid through it, ignoring the pressure it put on his chest. Then he was moving as fast as he could toward the lodging house.
“Specs!” He called, barreling through the front door. The other newsie hurried down the stairs from the bunkroom and stopped in his tracks when he saw Jack.
“Where did’ja go?” Specs asked. “You look like shit.”
“Thanks. Specs, I need your help. I need everyone’s help. We gotta call off the rally.”
“What?” Specs’ confusion was clear. “But Jack-”
“No.” Jack cut him off. “It’s Pulitzer. He threatened everyone. Me, Davey, all of us. He’s plannin’ on gettin’ everyone arrested at the rally. We gotta call it off.”
“Shit.” Specs nodded. “Okay. I’ll send everyone out. We’ll make sure no one shows up. But, Jack...what should we tell ‘em?”
“...the truth. That way...they’ll know we’re not backin’ down. But we can’t risk anyone else gettin’ taken away.”
“Alright. What about Davey?” Specs asked. “You said Pulitzer threatened him, too? What’s gonna happen?”
“I’m gonna...I’m gonna get ‘im out.” Jack sighed. “I gotta get ‘im out.”
“Let me tell everybody what’s goin’ on, and I’ll come with you,” Specs said. “We’ll get ‘im out together.”
Jack just nodded.
A little under an hour later, Jack and Specs (with Race and Blink close behind) were heading for the Refuge. As the four of them approached the grounds, Jack could feel his heart sink.
“Fuck,” Blink whispered, echoing what they were probably all thinking. “There are so many bulls.”
It looked like Snyder had upgraded his security. Cops roamed all around the Refuge. It would be impossible to get to the window without being seen. Specs put a hand on Jack’s shoulder.
“We can’t help ‘im, Jackie,” he said. “Not without them takin’ us all.”
“But-”
“Jack, please.” That was Race. “We can’t get ‘im now, but if we follow through? We’ll get ‘im out soon.”
“Besides,” Blink said. “Would the Spider wanna give up his leverage so quickly?”
“Yeah…” Jack tried to mentally reassure himself. “Alright, we’ll head back to the lodgin’ house. He’ll...Davey’ll be fine.”
God, he hoped they were right.
---
When they got back to the lodging house, the last person Jack expected to be standing in the main room was Katherine.
“Hiya, Kath,” Race said, giving her a small wave. “Whatcha doin’ here?”
“I need to, um...I need to talk to Jack,” she said.
“I don’t wanna talk to you,” Jack said. He ignored the confused looks his friends were giving him.
“Jack, please.” Her voice was quiet, pleading. “Everything that’s happened...I promise I can explain.”
“Hey, uh…” Specs corralled Race and Blink toward the stairs. “Let’s give them some privacy.”
Then the three were gone, and Jack and Katherine were alone.
“You got five minutes,” Jack said. “Startin’ with why you didn’t tell us Pulitzer was your father.”
“I didn’t think it was important.”
“What? You didn’t think it was important to tell us that you’re related to the guy who’s tryin’ to put us all outta work?”
“I don’t let who my family is define me!” Katherine’s voice wavered. “It wasn’t important because I’ve made this career without my father’s help. I don’t work for him because I don’t want that shadow hanging over me my entire life.”
“Why did you decide to cover a story that defied your father? How was that gonna help you?”
“Haven’t you been listening, Jack?” Katherine asked. She sniffed, but now her voice was stronger, firmer. “I want to help all of you, I really do. I want all the people like us--the kids who have to work hard to have a voice--to be heard by people who would never listen otherwise. I want things to change. I want things to get better.”
“I…” Jack was at a loss for words, and frankly, he felt stupid. In his anger, he had never considered any of this. “I’m sorry.”
“I’m sorry, too,” Katherine said. “I’m sorry any of this happened.”
“It’s not your fault.”
“We can still win. We just...need to figure out how.”
“Well, we can’t have a rally,” Jack said. “The bulls’ll arrest all the second we go public.”
“What if there was another way to spread the word?” Katherine looked thoughtful. “I have that speech I wrote for you for the rally. If we could find some way to print it, then maybe…”
“We could send it out to everyone!” Jack finished. “I know a printin’ press we could use that your father would never expect. And then we might win this thing and get Davey out.”
“The only problem is...winning the strike won’t get anyone out of the Refuge, will it?” Katherine asked. “We need a way to prove that that place is awful. Evil. That no one should ever be sent there again.”
Jack thought of the rooftop, of the countless nights he had spent drawing by moonlight when the nightmares kept him awake. “I think I have just the thing.”
---
If it wasn’t for Sticks, Jamie, and Dodger, Davey was sure he would have lost all his sanity in the Refuge the moment he arrived. Snyder hadn’t come for him again since that first night, something Davey was grateful for, but it also filled him with such apprehension that he could barely stand it. Was Snyder planning something? Had something happened to the other newsies? How was the strike going? There was no way to know, and that was what worried Davey so much.
He couldn’t do much on a broken ankle, but he didn’t let that stop him, no matter how much Jamie protested.
“If you don’t keep off of it, it might not be the same again,” he said every time Davey tried to stand up. “Did that knock to the head make you stupid?”
Davey just waved him off. He hated to admit it, but every time he lay down in the bunk, he felt useless. If he couldn’t walk, how was he supposed to help the others once he got out of this hellhole?
Now Jamie just grumbled every time Davey asked Sticks to help him up, and Dodger rolled his eyes every time Jamie grumbled. The two of them had some sort of unspoken language made up of looks, eyerolls, and completely random hand gestures, and Jamie most often employed it when he thought Davey was doing something stupid and Dodger had to calm him down.
Sticks, however, was more than happy to help Davey, because then he could ask for more stories while they were slowly pacing back and forth across the room together. Davey didn’t have a lot of stories about the newsies, considering he had only known them a few days, but Sticks didn’t seem to mind.
“Tell me more about Les,” he said one evening. They were sitting on the bed with Jamie and Dodger. Davey’s foot was propped up on the one pillow, at Jamie’s insistence. “He sounds real fun. I hope I get to meet him someday.”
“Yeah.” Davey leaned forward and ruffled Sticks’ hair. “I hope so, too. There was this one time…”
As Davey told the story, one involving Les’ less-than-successful attempt to hide a frog he had found at the docks from their parents a few months back, he noticed that Jamie and Dodger leaned forward to listen, which made him smile. He was glad that, even in the Refuge, they could find something to smile about.
“So then my mom found the box under our bed-” Davey cut off when the door suddenly opened. He heard Sticks’ quiet whimper at the sight of the Spider standing in the doorway, scanning the room with an evil glint in his eye. He finally settled on their bunk and smiled.
“Guards,” he said, and two goons appeared from where they had apparently been standing out in the hallway. “It’s time for some...rehabilitation. Get that one, there.” He pointed to Sticks, and Davey felt his blood run cold.
Sticks pushed himself into Davey’s side, but it did nothing. One of the guards grabbed him by his skinny arm and pulled him away from the bunk. Davey couldn’t help it; he stood up shakily, holding onto the bed for support.
“Davey, no,” Jamie whispered, but Davey wasn’t listening. He could only focus on Sticks, the kid who looked so much like his little brother. The kid who had tears streaming down his face and panic in his eyes as he struggled against the grip of a man who did his heinous job unfeelingly.
“Stop,” Davey said. “Don’t take him.”
“And what, pray tell, are you going to do about it?” Snyder asked. He approached Sticks and grabbed him by the hair. Sticks cried out, and all Davey knew was that he had to protect him.
He didn’t get farther than a few steps before the other guard shoved him to the floor. Stepped on his broken ankle. Davey screamed.
“Davey!” Sticks cried. He struggled harder, but the man holding him was so much stronger.
There were black spots in Davey’s vision, but he still tried to get to Sticks. He had to protect him. He had to-
The guard pulled a knife from nowhere and stabbed Davey in the gut.
Davey could hear cursing. It sounded kind of like Jamie, but his voice was far away. Davey’s vision was fading fast, but so was the pain from his side. Actually, all his pain was almost gone, already only a dull ache. That was strange. Someone knelt next to him. They were crying. A small hand grabbed his own. Oh, it was Sticks. Davey was glad he was there. Shit he was tired.
The last thing Davey heard before he closed his eyes was Snyder’s laughter.
“You have your friend Jack Kelly to thank for this, little rat,” Snyder said. But Davey was too exhausted to even wonder what that meant.
He closed his eyes.
---
They had really done it. Jack could barely believe it, and he knew that everyone else was still in shock. They had won the strike, and now the working kids of New York City finally had a voice. Jack looked across the square to where Katherine stood with Medda and Teddy Roosevelt himself, and he couldn’t recall ever feeling so full of hope. The fliers had been a success. “The Children’s Crusade”, Katherine had called the speech. Jack had paired with it one of his sketches of the Refuge, and they had spent all night using the printing press in Pulitzer’s cellar. The newsies had distributed the fliers the next morning.
And now, here they all were. Victorious.
Roosevelt proclaimed his decision to close down the Refuge, and Jack could barely contain his joy. He swept Katherine into a hug, and then he felt another impact to his side. He looked down, and Les was grinning up at him.
“This means we’re gonna see Davey again,” Les said with a happy squeak.
“Yeah, kid,” Jack said. “We are.”
The doors of the Refuge were just opening when they all arrived, and the crowd of newsies and other onlookers watched as a pair of policemen escorted Snyder down the steps and into a waiting cart. Everyone cheered.
Then, kids started streaming out of the place. Jack saw so many he remembered from his last stay. Some greeted him, some just nodded. A few younger ones ran right up and hugged him. This was a good day. A day of freedom and happiness, the first in a long while.
Soon, the stream of kids petered out. Jack could hear worried murmurs from his friends. He knew they were all wondering the same thing. Where was Davey?
Three kids, two older than the third, appeared in the entrance of the Refuge and walked slowly down the stairs. Jack recognized the youngest from his last visit. The kid who met him at the window with an enthusiastic grin and a message. The kid who looked just a little like Les.
“Sticks?” Jack made his way to the base of the steps, where the trio had stopped. Sticks looked up at him, and Jack noticed that his eyes were puffy. Actually, all three of them looked like they had been crying, though the two older kids hid it well. “What’s wrong? Where’s Davey?”
Sticks said nothing, only started sobbing and threw himself at Jack. The two older kids glanced at each other.
“Davey…” One of them said with a slight British accent. “Davey isn’t coming out.”
“What do you mean?” Jack heard Les ask. The kid had approached the group at some point with Katherine in tow. “Where’s my brother?”
The British kid just shook his head and looked at Jack for help, and suddenly the realization hit Jack like a train. He had been wrong. He couldn’t get Davey out.
“Jack,” Les said. “I want Davey. Where’s Davey?”
He couldn’t save Davey.
“Where’s my brother?”
Davey wasn’t getting out of the Refuge.

Jafar watched him, if he didn’t know better, he could have sworn he saw Mozenrath actually take a liking to the kids there. He was normally kept up in his home at the complex away from everyone apart from Xerxes and pet rabbit. It made him feel proud of Mozenrath actually. “It could potentially save you guys some time when coming home from school and not have to take a bus, or be picked up. To do the ‘to school’ half may be a bit harder. Unless you were taught how to make Location Anchors with the nanites too?” He figured it be something Vigos or Mungull taught him how to make being part of the Sovereign Expedition too. The crew had a different kind of wrist band resembling a watch that could be removed, but it was something Mozenrath still didn’t want.
“Maybe when we get back, maybe now you’d want something like the crews band or like mine so if this did happen again and I wasn’t near by to be pulled into, you’d be able to be found too.” Jafar told Moze after making the bracelets for the kids. He soon made a face at having to disguising himself. From what he’s seen online, it seemed though those who did tricks with fire were admired for their skill and not getting injured or burned. It was similar to the faires on Azeroth during midsummer festival and darkmoon faire.
“I am sure more are afraid of you than I, but sometimes I do wish I had a certain hero’s ability” He couldn’t help look at the spider-man decoration. He smirked some. “I’ll be fine, I don’t think will notice having normal cloths, maybe a nice sleek pair of sunglasses.” He knew his animated counterpart was actually more bald than in their home.
After breakfast, Jafar did help the house cleaner with getting breakfast things cleaned up and washed. Jafar suggested they visit the school, but their father told him how they had recently upped security because of other events going around the normal. It made him a bit sad that such thing could happen to children “so … even if we were found, and decided to stay to see their schools play, we couldn’t?
“That I’m not sure, but if this being that helped you both is as good as he is to change things like that, it would depend on that,” He frowned a bit.
“Knowing Vigos, he’d probably host the performance at his place, or rent out some professional theatre for these kids to give something to look forward if there’s some that dream of being on stage.”
It had been some time since Vigos unveiled the surprise to Mozenrath after several years of him living in their era, and as much as he didn’t want to be apprentice, Vigos subtly did with a bit of help from family and friends to help him unlock the potential of the nanites enough to be given a similar energy core as his own.
With the threats on Azeroth we’re taken care of, there were more of domestic threats that rose up being the forces of what where called “terrorist time magus” that could send enemies anywhere in the multiverse and time continuum. It was an ever evolving battle with learning of new ways to attack them, one was from afar. Vigos brought both Jafar and Mozenrath with aboard Whyoya to get an idea of why he wanted to make sure Mozenrath was ready to take on other threats that could potentially be threatening to his own lands on earth and why he didn’t want to keep the two realities separated.
The battle was going well up till some of the magi could sense that there were new recruits not seeing them before and targeted them first. Nel was already partially immune to their abilities already being thrown through space and time, but wasn’t able to make it in time when both Jafar and Mozenrath were then flung through a torn open rift to titans know where. It was as if he ran in slow motion seeing them fall victim to the magi. Vigos forces managed to take out a lot more of them, but it seemed they still sprouted like weeds.
For Jafar everything went black as he passed through the event horizon of the rift. The next thing he did wake up to was waves crashing on a beach, a lot of horns honking, sirens going off being just outside of the down town area of a past era New York. The two still had their cloths they had at the fight which already made them stand out in the time period. Though Jafar realized he may have to translate being more familiar with this eras version of English language which was different from Atlantian rooted English which a universal language that took in a lot of others, combining them.
To everyone else it just seemed as if they just suddenly appeared in a blink of an eye and went about their ordinary lives.

When there’s something big, something little will wake me up screaming in the night.”
25. “It gets so philosophical sometimes. You start to think back to the Big Bang and the moment of singularity. That is such a concept that is beyond our ken. That moment of singularity… When was it? How can it exist?”
26. “We can all have mottos that we live by; it doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re entirely faithful to them. It can be who you aspire to be. It doesn’t mean you can’t be inconsistent sometimes. That’s what makes any character and any person interesting – their inconsistencies, the little flaws in the weft of their character.”
27. “It’s an old, faithful jumper. It makes me very happy.”
28. “You want to be loyal to the memory of what it was and what it meant to so many people. You want the dots to join up. You want it to be emotionally true.”
29. “I run like Phoebe from Friends.”
30. “If I have remained grounded, it’s because I’m far too afraid to be anything else.”
31. “Los Angeles is an extraordinary place. It’s so full of opportunity that it does have that sort of wide-eyed American sensibility that anything is possible twinned with this very harsh business sense where nothing is possible. It’s a fascinating place and I found myself liking it more and more and loathing it more and more in equal measure. It’s a beautiful place and the opportunities are vast but at the same time it has a real cold-bloodedness.”
32. “Just keep going. Keep going and keep surprising yourself, keep having reasons to get up in the morning and keep feeling like you’re getting better and swifter and keener and sharper”
33. “It’s Monday. I’d go back to bed.”
34. “Everyone else seemed to have sorted out where they stood in the world, and I just couldn’t seem to. I felt like I was busking. I felt like I was running to catch up with everyone else. But I still feel like that, if I’m honest. It was the dawning of that sensation that’s never really gone away.”
35. “I’m keenly aware, all the time, of in some way failing”
36. “Talk. Talk to people. Talk to yourself if that helps. Might not get very good advice back… hmm.”
37. “AM I AFRAID OF DEATH?”
38. “There is so much more influencing our actions than what is morally right.”
39. “If you speak in a different accent, you begin to move in a slightly different way. You think in a slightly different way. I think it’s part of trying to find what makes a character.”
40. “I don’t mind spiders. I’m surprisingly okay with spiders.”
41. (On meeting Georgia) “The the likelihood of it is so remote. Especially because I grew up in Paisley and our worlds were so far apart. And yet here we are.”
42. “You never know from any year to the next how things are going to pan out, and I think you just have to treat it all as a bit of an adventure so that you’re neither crushed nor overwhelmed by what may occur.”
43. “I think there just comes a point, though, where a line has to be drawn. And we have to go, ‘This sort of stuff has just been going on for too long.’”
44. “I never felt like I was headed anywhere; I’ve always sort of bumbled, to be honest; I’ve always just gone from one contract to other; I’ve been mostly fortunate that I’ve been able to join them up. And that’s all I ever really hoped for.”
45. “Apparently it broke down because we didn’t drive it enough. At least that’s what the AA man said. We just use it for short trips and you can’t do that with a Prius apparently, you have to give it regular long runs.”
46. “Oh. I don’t know what I’m saying half the time.”
47. “I just want to float like a will-o-the wisp”

For those questions: all the multiples of ten!
Okaayyyy! Here we gooooo!
10. Who was the last person you had a deep conversation with?
The boy I’ve been seeing.
20. Do you like your neighbors?
I know two sets of my neighbors that I know. One of which are my friend’s parents and I greatly enjoy them. Another of which are friends with my dad and I am indifferent to them. They also don’t know I live here yet. There’s also this one kid that is always dribbling his soccer ball in the cul-de-sac by himself. I don’t know him at all, but I want him to have friends.
30. Do you want to get married?
I do not! I actually have plans for my 30th birthday to throw an “not-wedding” party. Everyone will receive save the dates. There will be a registry for gifts. I will wear a fancy ass gown. Some of my closest friends will be invited as my Boss Ass Bitches. And in the invitations I will specify that this is a celebration of me not getting married and that all bad attitudes about that should be left at home.
40. What do you want to do after high school?
Obviously I did not read all of these questions very well. I graduated high school eight years ago, so it’s a little late for this question. I did, however, do what I set out to do after high school, which was theatre.
50. What was the colour of the last hoodie you wore?
Black. Because of course.
60. Ever won a competition? For what?
I was first place in Forensics for a couple of categories and a couple of different levels in high school. My favorite was for Storytelling. The story came from The Fairy’s Mistake by Gail Carson Levine.
I also won Freshman of the Year in college if that means anything.
70. Names of your bestfriends?
Jonathan, Eva, Morgan, Lawrence, and Ho(e) Squad (Kiera, Alex, Eden, Brian, Emily)
80. What colour pants [are you wearing]?
I’m not wearing pants right now. My panties are blue, though.
90. Name a person you love?
Morgan
100. How are you feeling?
Meh.
110. Have you ever liked someone so much it hurt?
I feel like this is the basic description of a crush.
120. Are you afraid of the dark?
Not particularly. I am afraid of things that frequent the dark though, such as spiders.
130. Do you like subway?
Public transportation is my fucking jam. Wait, oh shit, this is about the shitty restaurant isn’t it?
140. Summer or Winter?
Summer, most definitely.
150. Get the closest book next to you, open it to page 42, what’s the first line on that page?
The book closest to me is The Stage Management Handbook by Daniel A. Ionazzi. It says, “ (4) There shall be no less than one and one-half (11/2) hours and no more than three (3) hours between curtain down and a rehearsal call.” It’s probably about Equity rules.

What was your last Facebook notification for? A like on a photo
What bands have you seen live? Too many to list. I live for shows!
Tell me an interesting fact about your mother: She was born in Belfast & moved to the States when she was 3(?), but spent most of her summers back "home" as a child and teen. This was at the heart of The Troubles in N. Ireland so she has some colorful stories for sure.
What do you think is the most important thing to happen to you before the age of 13? I couldn't narrow it down to a single event. Unless we count the trauma I experienced that gifted me my PTSD, anxiety, & various other mental illnesses. But I don't want to deem that as "important."

Think of the last person you had sex with. Do you think they’ve slept with anyone else since they last slept with you? BOY HE BETTER NOT HAVE lmao
The last time you dyed your hair, what color did you dye it? Same as it ever was
Think of the last time you went out to eat. Who paid? Glenn & I went to the food court at the mall and got separate things that we paid for on our own
Do you save at least 15 percent of your income? HAAAAAAAAA no
Do you ever go on Reddit? If so, what are some of your favorite subreddits? It's my go-to bedtime reading! I love askreddit, antimlm, amitheasshole, glitch_in_the_matrix... tons more.
Were you ever a flower girl or ring bearer in anyone’s wedding when you were little? I was the flower girl for my aunt's wedding! I made it all the way down the aisle, then turned around & noticed everyone staring at me and burst into tears. Classic Elizabeth.
Are your parents in good health? Thank God, yes!
Have you ever been a caregiver to a sick/disabled relative? No
Is there any type of medicine you can’t take? For what reason? Not that I'm aware of
Do you have a favorite pair of pajamas? What do they look like? I have several cute pairs! But my go-tos are just nightgowns or big tee shirts most of the time.
Do you have any interesting pillow cases? Uh I wouldn't call any of them interesting.
If something on your body hurts, which part is it most likely to be? None!
Are you more afraid of spiders or bees? Neither really
Have you ever worn fake nails? If so, what did the last pair you wore look like? WOW I am literally wearing press-on nails as we speak. Yes, I'm trash. And yes, I love it.
Is Russian or Native American history more interesting to you? Both?

10 weird facts about me!
I was tagged by @saltyshiro who I absolutely adore the works of!!! ♥
1. My eyes are black. Not dark brown, black. I get into tons of arguments with this one. I'm Peruvian, and black eyes are a genetic thing. You can't see my pupils unless you have a really, really, really bright source of light shining at my face. If you look super close, you can see that my eye color has no pigmentation and if anything is a super dark blue-gray. No brown at all.
2. I have super weird ankles, so I walk with a tiny limp! I might be getting surgery this summer? Basically, there is absolutely no arch in my feet, and I have severe overpronation in both feet to the point where my ankles are rolling in on themselves. I know every ramp and elevator on campus. However, so I don't have to walk, I'm inseperable from my bike. Most people won't see me without it unless I'm walking short distances
3. I'm absolutely, completely, and wholy afraid of butterflies. I love bees. I don't mind spiders. I think dragonflies are gorgeous. But butterflies? I'll cry if one touches me. I don't think I really know why?? I also attract them more than most people. I think it's because I wear sweet oils and stuff as a kind of fragrance thing, but they will always try landing on me. It's weird because once I was buying something outside at a small market thing and a bee was trying to land on me and I was like "oh hello there sweetie please move" but then a butterfly came and my heartrate skyrocketed and gave me a whole fight or flight response
4. I really, really love sour candy???? It's my favorite candy other than chocolate, with me being a complete chocoholic
5. I love learning other languages??? I speak English and Spanish, of course, being both American and Hispanic. I'm Peruvian and Puerto Rican, so it's just expected of me. However, I'm trying to learn Japanese and Norwegian, and I'm trying to learn Sign Language on top of that. I also actively write in irken from Invader Zim because I memorized the code/cypher/alphabet when I was in the 4th grade and I just... Never forgot it because I actually use it.
6. I love pets,,,, I have two dogs and three hermit crabs. I want to have like 50 hermit crabs one day. I adore them with all of my heart and they are the best fun to take care of. They're little critters that mean the world to me.
7. I'm super loud. Sometimes embarrassingly loud. My whisper is about regular volume for most people. My shouting is so loud it's unbearable. It made me good when I was a Cadet in AFJROTC because nobody could mishear my commands, and the whole auditorium could hear me without a single problem. Also because I was in AFJROTC I started an application for the Air Force Academy, but didn't finish because I ended up changing my mind and sticking with college.
8. In Middle School I used to be in band, chorus, drama, and musical theatre. In high school I was in AFJROTC, Art, and some special program for kids with averages over 90. The thing in, you were supposed to be in only one academy at all until graduation, so I was cheating the system to be in three at once. My schedule also cheated the system and I was in school longer than any other kid, including my full schedule my senior year. Every class in my school for the most part counted as 1 credit per half year, so most classes were two. You need 44 credits to graduate. I graduated with 60 and a 3.65 average. It meant absolutely nothing in the end, but it meant that High School was a WILD RIDE. I also ended up doing over like 500 hours of community service? I don't know how I lived? I rarely slept.
9. I actually went to Karate Classes for years. I think four or five years. I went to a separate music school for private Vocal Lessons, Piano Lessons, and Baratone Horn lessons, and that went on for like 6 years. It was a lot of fun but I'm majoring in Cyber Security Engineering, so none of it is related to my future job. Still I really love singing, and most of my friends know when I'm coming to visit because I'll sing while walking home/visiting them and they will hear me out their windows.
10. I eat KitKats freakishly weird apperantly. My friends tell me to stop. I was told that "Willy Wonka would find this an abomination" and other things along those lines. I eat them the way I ate Nutty Bars, the sides first and then the contents one layer at a time for the water. If you've never seen anybody do that before, then yeah, me eating a KitKat is a disaster. However, I refuse to stop.
