Rescue: HI-SurfĀ (Sept. 22, Fox)
Surfās up ā and dangerous ā in Foxās newest first responder drama,Ā Rescue: HI-Surf.Ā Set on the idyllic beaches of Oahuās North Shore, the series follows a team of hardworking lifeguards ā from veteran Em (Arielle Kebbel) all the way to new recruits Kainalu (Alex Aiono) and Hina (Zoe Cipres) ā as they dive headfirst into the deep end to save tourists and locals who get swept up in the islandās ever-changing tides. āI really wanted to make a show that wasn't just set in Hawaii, but that was actuallyĀ aboutĀ Hawaii. It's about the people who call that place home,ā creator Matt Kester explains. āIt's an exciting show with all the rescues, but there's also a lot of great drama and really great character relationships that weāll be playing out over the first season.ā āEmlyn Travis
Sullivan's CrossingĀ (Oct. 2, The CW)
Back toĀ Sullivan's CrossingĀ we go. Season 1 of the CW drama series left off on a cliffhanger with viewers wondering whether Maggie (Morgan Kohan) is pregnant and if a romance with Cal (Chad Michael Murray) is in her future. Murray says that season 2 delivers more about Calās dark past ... and his future. āCal is starting to realize that Sullivanās is his home,ā Murray says. āJust when you think you have the entire world figured out, we turn over another stone and you realize that these characters' pasts are far darker than we ever assumed that they might have been.ā But have no fear, this season has some light too. Murray teases a scene later in the season where the boys of the Crossing compete in a friendly game of ax throwing. āIt was just fun to step aside from the heavy weighted drama at the Crossing.āĀ āCalie Schepp
TrackerĀ (Oct. 13, CBS)
The Shaw siblings aren't messing around when Tracker returns. Although the mystery of what Dory (Melissa Roxburgh) is up to with her fatherās files will be explored a little later on, Russell Shaw (Jensen Ackles) will make an appearance early in season 2. āHe comes in at the highest point,ā showrunner Elwood Reid teases. And it isn't a proper Shaw brother reunion without at least one family secret. āThereās a secret that is revealed about their father in the first episode that lands with both brothers,ā Reid says, āThereās a memory youāll see that Colter doesnāt have that his brother does about Colter and their father.ā Now that the brothers are on better terms, perhaps they can actually compare notes about their childhoods?Ā āA.Y.
Georgie & Mandy's First MarriageĀ (Oct. 17, CBS)
Spinoff seriesĀ Georgie & Mandyās First MarriageĀ picks up a few months after the events of theĀ Young SheldonĀ finale, which saw the death of Georgieās dad. Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy (Emily Osment) are still grappling with the loss, and living with her parents and their baby all while trying to navigate inner-family politics and figure out their future. And while fans of its predecessor can expect lots of familiar faces ā such as Will Sasso, Rachel Bay Jones, Zoe Perry, Annie Potts, and Raegan Revord ā executive producer Steve Holland says he hopes audiences are just as excited as he was to dig into a different part of theĀ Big Bang TheoryĀ television universe. āThis is the first time in 18 years that we're not writing for Sheldon, and Sheldon's a great character and I'm so proud to have been a part of writing that character, but this is a different show,ā Holland says. āI don't have to keep Googling science facts anymore or trying to pretend that I know what I'm talking about. This is a much more, I think, relatable family show. These are different characters. It's the same world, but the slice of this world they inhabit has a different flavor to it.ā āL.H.
Ghosts (Oct. 17, CBS) Three seasons in, Ghosts has a big paranormal sandbox and in season 4, theyāve invited the hilarious Mary Holland to play. In last seasonās finale, a vengeful spirit kidnapped Brandon Scott Jonesā Isaac, moments after he left his fiancĆ© jilted at the altar. Holland is that vengeful spirit, the most puritanical Puritan, Patience, who āwas actually kicked out of her village for being a bit too much, so even by their standards, she's a lot to deal with,ā says co-showrunner Joe Wiseman. Patience has it out for Isaac since he abandoned her to the dirt by letting go of her hand so that he could sneeze. āShe's been wandering for 130 years or something like that, so she's a little upset,ā Wiseman reveals, ābut she's going to spend a few episodes at Woodstone and is going to mix things up there.ā āL.F.B.

RIP TOM SMOTHERS
1937-2023
Tommy Smothers was one half of the comedy and music duo the Smothers Brothers, performing for nearly his entire career with his brother Dick. On September 10, 1967 CBS censored Pete Seegar's anti-war song āWaist Deep in the Big Muddyā during āThe Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.ā The network claimed the lyrics were an insult to President Johnson. This event was a landmark decision for television and affected the brothers' career.
Lucille Ball and The Smothers Brothers often appeared on the same variety and awards shows together, although not at the same time. They were involved in "Jack Benny's 20th Anniversary Special" (1970), "The Ed Sullivan Show Georgie Awards" (1970), "Dinah Shore's Like Hep!" (1969). "The Dean Martin Show" (1970), "Zenith's Salute to 25 Years of Television" (1970), "Jack Benny's Carnival Nights" (1968), and "John Wayne's Swing Out Sweet Land" (1972).
The brothers were mentioned on the very first episode of "Here's Lucy" (1968). When Harry balks about hiring family, Lucy saysĀ āSuppose the Smothers Brothers didn't hire relatives. We'd only have one Smother!āĀ A month before āHere's Lucyā premiered, CBS presented a four episode series titled āThe Summer Smothers Brothers Hour.ā Season 3 of their popular variety show premiered a week later.
When Mr. Mooney sees Lucy and Viv reunited in "Lucy and the Lost Star" (1968), he calls them the 'Smothers Mothers'.

So, as promised, I moved on to Bess' four younger half-siblings, but, in order to spawn some "children" images, I started by creating their dad first! (Also, we'll be seeing him in a little ficlet soon.) Meet George Sullivan, Bess' angel of a stepfather. He met Bess and her mother when Bess was about 5-6 years old and married her mother a little over a year later, fully adopting Bess soon after. This man is the only father Bess has ever known and the reason she even made it to adulthood: She was his "mudpuppy" and he was her daddy, though she pretty much always referred to him as 'George'. (Her mother didn't want Bess to call him 'Dad' or anything in that vein. She was... a complicated person.) A gentle giant with a protective side, George was a skilled carpenter and a wonderful family man. Unfortunately, he was taken much too soon, breaking countless hearts when he left, especially Bess'. Rest in peace, Georgie Boy.
Well, there he is, @rom-e-o. The man that brought home a small child that was absolutely caked in mud and ended up calling her "Mudpuppy". I just know he brought it up to tease her all the time. I think he and Scrooge would probably get along quite well. Once he was assured Scrooge wasn't trying to take advantage of his little Mudpuppy first, of course. Always gotta check out those boys' intentions, ya know.

The Seekers take the world by storm with 'Georgy Girl'
There are few things in this world I love more than pop songs from the 1960s. #TheSeekers #GeorgyGirl #1960sMusic
On May 21st, 1967, The Seekers arrived on the stage of The Ed Sullivan Show to perform their hit single āGeorgy Girlā ā a song that had been taken from the movie title and theme song of the same name. It was an iconic performance that has since become a memory cherished by those who experienced the 60s firsthand. This was the second time they had performed on The Ed Sullivan Show, with theirā¦

Oh I wonder what Delās sister would think if she visited again and saw how much Alfie has deteriorated š„ŗ what would her reaction be?

She had lied to her parents, again.
She lied to them a lot these days, each time it got a little easier. A little bit less of a twist in her stomach, less of a shake in her hands.
She had always been held to a high standard, she was the darling girl, the larkspur, the dear. She kept her parents contented and happy, even afterā¦ Delās absence.
She studied hard, enjoyed the little things put in front of her like her motherās interest in her embroidery and needlework. She didnāt mind doing things for others, she liked to do so. To put a little extra gusto into a hobby just like any other of hers to make her mother smile brighter was a very small sacrifice.
ā¦ but now everything was soā¦ tangled.
Each day what had all been so routine and simple in her life was becoming increasingly more difficult but she seemed to be the only one noticing.
So she lied.
-
āThe doctor would like to speak to you first, Ms. Sullivan, please take a seat and he will be with you shortly.ā
Three buses and a mile walk. She could wait a few more minutes.
Georgie nodded and retreated back to an institutional chair on the wall opposite of the visitorsā entry. The nurse had looked surprised when she requested Alfredās name. She had picked up a phone, with an uncertain expression and spoke in a hushed tone to the other end. Georgie only straightened her dress and tried to stand up taller. They wouldnāt send her away would they? She had come so far.
She was relieved when only a few minutes later the doctor from last time opened the door with a smile.
āMs. Sullivan, Iām so delighted to see you again.ā
She did her best to smile in return and then followed his welcoming gesture through the door.
āItās nice to see you as well-ā
He mustāve seen her trepidation when it came to his name, āDr. Harris,ā he supplied with a reassuring smile. He lightly rested a hand on her shoulder to guide the teenager forward into the maze, only removing it to unlock the necessary doors.
āSo, back to see Mr. Finch? Heās a lucky boy to receive another visit from you.ā
āUm, yes, Iām on my summer break now.ā She offered as a means of explanation for her presence.
She felt the doctor looking at her even as she kept her gaze forward as they walked side by side, āDo your parents know youāre here?ā
Her heart jumped, would he still send her away? Or much worse, insist on calling them?
āOh yes, of course, they wanted to come themselves but they were already otherwise occupied. Father is at work and you know how bridge club can be.ā
The doctor didnāt respond right away as he opened another door off the hall for her and she fought the urge to look at him, something about eye contact with him made her feel as though she were under a magnifying glass. She was hoping for a laugh at the bridge comment, no such luck. It was a distinctive difference from the fatherly warmth she remembered from the last time she had met the man.
āHave you been studying hard all year?ā
Georgie had to pull her dreading gaze away from the sterile halls they were passing to look back to the doctor just as soon as sheād repressed the urge, āUm yes, I received straight Aās.ā
āClever girl. You will have a bright future ahead of you then. I very much believe in young women having the opportunity to apply themselves academically and in the workforce. Weāve even had a few young women beginning to graduate in psychiatric medicine coming to the hospital.ā
The doctor stopped at a door and unlocked it for her to enter.
āIād like to go to college when I graduate after next year, but my parents are not so sure about it yetā¦ā
āWell with your grades Iām sure you can convince them,ā He placed his hand on her back again and led her to a chair to sit and then took the opposing chair at the table.
She nodded but waited for him to speak again, it was hard as it was to hold her thoughts as she was imagining Alfie in these halls, alone day in and day out.
āMs. Sullivan, I can tell you are a bit nervous but Iād like to talk to you about Mr. Finch before your visit today.ā
She swallowed subconsciously and nodded to the doctor earnestly.
āAs you know, Mr. Finch is very unwell. I suggest you prepare yourself as heās declined significantly since your last visit. His inability to cooperate has required more rigorous treatment and as a result he may not be able to communicate as you might be used to -He isnāt even talking right now actually. I considered not allowing you to see him as this institution is no place for a young lady like you to begin withā¦ but thought better as I can only hope that seeing you might help. I realized that you might be calming for him, after all we want to do everything we can to help. I am willing to try all routes.ā
Struggling? More so than before?
āIām afraid you will have to brace yourself, can you do that for me, Ms. Sullivan?ā
Georgie forced herself to fold her hands politely in her lap and make eye contact as she nodded in understanding. He was scaring her but any hesitation and he might not let her see him.
Something about him today made her feel as though he wouldnāt think twice about exercising his control. She recognised it from her school principal, her 2 week long boyfriend had called that one sadistic.
Georgie looked past the doctor at herself in the mirrored wall she faced. Her cheeks were flushed like they always did when she was nervous. She self consciously tucked the stray pieces of hair behind her ears just as the door buzzed and then clicked open and a man in white entered. He nodded to Dr. Harris and then stepped aside for a much smaller frame to come in.
Alfie was as pale as a ghost, dressed in a straight jacket and eyes trained down. An additional man in white was guiding him in by the shoulders, practically pushing him forward as he shuffled in.
āAlfred, you have a visitor!ā The doctor announced jovially.
Alfieās eyes darted up to him and stayed for a moment, as if actively trying to comprehend what the doctor had just said.
At last he blinked and turned his head to check the rest of the room. After an excruciating few moments he landed on Georgie and as she smiled, she realized she had been holding her breath.
āHi Alfie,ā Georgie whispered.
She looked back to Harris who had stood for the orderly to press her friend down in his place. The orderly stepped back and it was Harrisā turn to place his hands on the slumped shoulders.
āAlfred, I allowed Ms. Sullivan to come in case she might help you to improve your behavior. Ms. Sullivan, I will be in just the other room in case you need any kind of assistance.ā
He stared at her a moment while the guards and doctor left and closed the door. The doctor had said he wouldnāt talk, she reminded herself.
But then after an excruciatingly long silence, he whispered back, āHi-ā, his voice sounded wrong and rough.
In horror, she noted that his eyes looked empty too, he recognized her right?
āItās been a long time since I visited you last, Iām sorry,ā her stomach was twisting. What had they done to him? He looked so- so- very wrong, emaciated, exhausted and just... so very empty.Ā
Tears started to well in her eyes as he didnāt respond again immediately, angrily she wiped them away with her hand, she shouldnāt be crying. She was stronger than that. She didnāt cry. Not anymore.
He frowned deeply, reflecting her expression.
āWhere is Del?ā
Where is Del.
More tears threatened in her eyes. The doctor had warned her- she had told him she could handle this.
Each silence dragged on as she tried to hold herself together and Alfie was just trying to comprehend.
āFieā¦ā She breathed, āItās just meā¦ Del isnāt- he isnāt coming.ā
He looked down again, eyebrows creased but silent.
With harsh movements, she wiped her face again, she had to pull herself together. Or they would-
The door clicked and they both flinched, though Alfie mostly just hunched a little more into himself.Ā
āMs. Sullivan, I think it would be best if you followed me out.ā The doctor had returned, along with another young man in a coat and the two same orderlies.Ā
She looked wide eyed between Alfie locked in on himself and the men. It was clear she had messed it up. She had only been with him at most 3 minutes.
She stood and Alfie looked back to her and tried to stand too, but the orderlies were already above him, holding his shoulders to keep him seated.
āCome along now, Georgina,ā Dr. Harris beckoned her again uncharacteristically with her first name and Alfie made a noise. He looked upset.
It looked like he wanted to stand again but the menās grips were strong.
The doctorās eyes had become hard, she was hesitating too long, so she looked back to Alfie one more time before following him out.
-
āIām sorry I let you do that- see him- I mean, that was too upsetting for you,ā The doctor said once they were in the hall. But his eyes had softened and he did look sorry.
She choked back a sob, āWhat happened to him?ā
āItās his disease, his hallucinations are worsening.ā
Another infuriating sob escaped her. How had this happened? How had she lost them both?
Next thing she knew she was hugging the doctor, crying into his jacket.
āShhhh- shhhh, youāre okay, I know, that was very hard to see- shhhhhh, you were a very brave girl to want to help him,ā He stroked her head a few times.
At last she pulled away and he held out a handkerchief. She accepted it and mumbled that she better be going, incredibly embarrassed by the intense show of emotion.
He walked her out and suddenly she was in the parking lot, her lip still trembling stupidly now that she was alone.Ā
That wasnāt even him, kept going over in her head.
Before she knew it, fresh tears were spilling over her cheeks.Ā
āUm, maāam? Are you alright?ā
She whipped her head up, mortified yet again.Ā
In front of her was a young man of about 30 something with a very concerned look on his face.
She used the doctorās handkerchief to wipe away the fresh tears, āYes, Iām okay,ā she meant to say in an assured tone but in said it came out shaky, like she was 10 again.
āPardon my intrusion, but Iām not sure if I believe you,ā a small worried smile bloomed on his face and he reached out his hand, āMy nameās Sean, Iām an orderly here.ā
She laughed slightly in spite of herself, he was right she wasnāt really selling herself on this one. She shook his hand, āOh god, Iām sorry, thatās probably covered in snot,ā she retracted it quickly.
āMaāam, that isnāt even the worst Iāve seen today,ā he cracked a smile and she blew her nose again in her best attempt to regain control.
āI feel like such an idiot... the doctor, he warned me what he would be like but I was so stupid, I thought Iād be fine,ā Her voice cracked again.Ā
Sean took a step back from the hand shake, careful not to invade her space.
āYour response is nothing to be embarrassed about.ā
She felt her cheeks burn in shame as she sniffled again, why was she talking to this man in the middle of the parking lot while bawling her eyes out? It was bad enough in front of the doctor. She was already certain they wouldnāt let her see him again, not after all of that. Now this was probably just making it worse, the guy worked here after all.
āIf I may ask, whoād you visit?ā He asked so gently, it almost looked like he wanted to hug her right there.
She hesitated but then realized it didnāt matter if she told him, he could just go look at the logs she was sure.
āAlfred. Alfred Finch.ā
The manās eyes grew serious and then quietly, very quietly he said, āYouāre the girl from the painting.ā
The girl from the painting. God, Alfie had been painting? And she was in one?
It felt like a knife right through her.
āThis is going to sound incredibly peculiarā¦ but Alfie- heās um my patient- but more- heās my friend.ā
His friend?Ā
Georgie didnāt know much about mental hospitals but she didnāt think orderlies were friends with patients.
He read the look on her face and pressed forward, āI know it doesnāt make sense.. But, Fie, I mean Alfie, heās a really good kid and- well I donāt know, I feel crazy just trying to explain it to you-ā
ā-He painted something with me in it?ā
She looked like she was going to break out in tears again.
āYeah, a few months ago, it was amazing, there was this one with you and a young man, in a park or a field or something, surrounded by little yellow flowersā¦ā
She looked down, āThey had taken me to a picnic in the country, the three of us... I remember that day. It was buttercups.ā
Sean watched her somewhat nervously as she stayed lost in thought for a few more seconds but then she looked back up, āSo you know Alfie? Actually know him?ā
Sean nodded but frowned, āI havenāt seen him in months, the doc thought we were too close, he wouldnāt communicate with anyone elseā¦ so now I just hear bits and pieces.ā
āWhat- what have they been doing to him? Today, he-ā She fell off, unable to finish the sentence she had started.
āIt hasnāt been easy for him, they were giving him electroshock for a while but I have no idea what theyāre doing right now, sounds like a lot of different things.ā
She stared back at him with horror and Sean could only grimace, that nagging guilt suddenly twisted like a knife into his stomach. It was now his turn.
āYou really love him donāt you?ā He finally said at last.Ā
She nodded, solemn, āHe didnāt kill Delanoā¦. And heās the only brother I have left.ā
Back-breaking clarity weighed down on Sean in that moment, he knew without an ounce of doubt that she had spoken the truth. Alfred did not kill Delano.
Now Sean felt like the stupid one for ever questioning himself.
āI donāt think he did either.ā
The girl stared at him, hard and solid, āYou believe him?ā
She had to ask, she needed to hear it again, it was too much to believe. She had been the only one for so long.
āI mean I didnāt ever think he could do it. But I think Iāve really known he didnāt do it for a long time now.ā
Suddenly for the second time that day she found herself inexplicably and uncharacteristically hugging someone, but this time as she buried her face into the practical strangerās chest, she sank with relief. He believed them. He Believed Them.
After Georgie remembered herself and how ridiculous she was being she pulled away. But Sean didnāt look embarrassed, instead his face was only a reflection of her own, sheer relief.
āHe doesnāt deserve to be in there. I think it might kill him.ā Sean said at last. The second sentence was like an admission to himself, something he hadnāt dared allow himself to think.
She nodded, āBut how can he ever get out?ā
They shared another tired look, neither of them were idiots. What they wanted was impossible.
After neither of them said what they knew, Sean inhaled and looked around, āDid you take the bus here? Can I give you a ride home? I just got off my shift.ā
āUm, you know what, sure, thank you... But you can drop me off at a park closeby, I canāt go home like this,ā She pointed to her tear stained face and gave a half hearted smirk, āMy parents donāt know I visited him.ā
Sean thought for a moment, āIf youāre hungry, my wife-ā It thrilled him even to say the word, two months fresh, ā- is cooking dinnerā¦ I canāt promise that itāll be edible but the companyās good. Sheād love to meet you. She never stops hearing about Fie.ā Sean raised his hands slightly in a āwhat can I say?ā gesture and smiled sheepishly.
āOkay, thanks, Iād like that.ā
