Antique French Quimper Porcelain & Enamel Rivière Necklace
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quimper, pronounced “cam-pair” has been manufactured in Quimper, a town in Brittany, France for over 300 years. Created in 1690 at the time of the royal manufactures, they specialised in earthenware- tableware, interior decoration and also a line of elegant jewellery. Earthenware is glazed or unglazed pottery that has normally been fired below 1,200 degrees. Earlier stoneware was carefully marked because of government regulations, however for the most part Quimper pottery was not systematically marked until around 1870.

This amazing piece dates to around 1780. The rivière style necklace is made up of hearts, with lovely enamel portraits. As you go along each portrait, a small story is told, well matched with the hearts. They're set in place with claw settings, linked together by two fine chains and it fastens with a hook and eye type clasp. It has a wearable length of 16 inches and remains in incredible condition considering it's age

Secret Compartments!
Did you know that many pieces of Georgian furniture, such as desks and chests, contained hidden compartments?
In the Georgian era access to banks was limited and safety deposits boxes were not invented to the nineteenth century. Consequently, the Georgians needed a safe hiding place for their valuables, such as house deeds, jewellery and cash.
This led to the common practice of building secret compartments into furniture to hide one’s valuables from thieving servants or house guests.
Therefore, if you ever buy any Georgian furniture make sure you check it for secret compartments!

Memorial Jewellery
Hair work jewellery originated in France and England in the 1700’s, evolving from the craft of wig makers. Initially, the jewellery functioned as a mourning memento and was a common funeral gift in the 18th century.  Rings, brooches, necklaces, watch fobs, earrings and much more were crafted from the lock of a loved one.

Cool Regency period key pendant, circa 1810. There's a round locket compartment in the centre of the bow, currently home to a tightly woven lock of hair (the Georgians were like that..), and features intricate filigree ropework details along the shank and unusual (but quite lovely) hand-engraved detailing to the bit. As you can probably tell, I just googled "anatomy of a key" and it was somewhat illuminating - I would have only hit on one of those three descriptors. The significance of the key is clear here, not the usual "key to my heart", but rather it's a memorial piece, so the key unlocks a memory of the deceased. Crafted in 15 karat gold, converted from a brooch.

Alright really random but, did you know that in the eighteenth century some side boards were built with hidden compartments for chamber pots, so that they could be used during meals?
