Warning : Heavily opinionated as I speak from my experience (which may be lacking) as someone who worked and studied in PR/Marketing sector so please take it lightly as this is just for a fun agree-to-disagree discussion
Okay let's talk about it
Tumblr media
To some grussell sprouts, the development of George's "meme" persona to the general fans might be an annoying phenomenon because we often see George being reduced to nothing but memes and people just talk about his funny moments, like him for his looks or underrate him.
But what if I said it wasn't all that negative? Career wise.
F1 is a sport where you have to establish a personality or strong branding to shine there. It's not only about skills and talents sadly (let's face reality). We all know that not all F1 figures decide to go down this road but at the very least, they all do and they must do especially the current ones. After his Sakhir 2020 performance and pre-Mercedes era, I'd rank George's marketability somewhere around 6-10 on the grid. People know he is talented but often times, they do not know him enough to know about his personality. Very different from the likes of Norris or Ricciardo (in a good way). I won't blame anyone and their moms for this because George is in a Williams back then, which may lack some spotlight to it compared to the Williams nowadays.
Then he came to Mercedes. And he acts like usual. Like what he did in Williams. He has always been George the way he is since forever. But people are shocked when they know more and start to come to their own conclusion and stereotype him as "bitchy", "tory", etc. Why does this happen? Because they know he is there on the grid, he is famous but they don't know him enough to know his personality. And so he got stereotyped and people got the wrong idea of him.
But George's personality starts to show more to the general fans eyes as the "george russell is the type of guy..." memes appear and the intro pose soon follows. People are getting to know him through liking his "new" funny personality. It isn't anything new actually. George is being George but they just got to know him aside from his radio, race personality, and face. They just got to know more of George through his personality that is "goofy" for them even though it is honestly nothing new.
Then the hair part rolls in. Believe me, hair theory exists and works. It is a part of marketing and PR sometimes. George's hair made him look friendlier than before to the general public as it was a style they are more familiar with. Me and you, as George's fans, honestly do not care whether he wants to use 100 gels or go bald (We'd still like him) but to the general public that doesn't really know him? It matters. So you need to understand that even though those don't matter to you. They matter to the general fans and help them to like him more.
There's also the part where the sponsors actually start to know the direction they'll take with George. This is shown clearly by the way Tommy, Ritz, Marriott, Puma, etc produce/direct his recent ads/photoshoots/etc. If you are able to notice, they seem to have a clearer perspective of the direction where they are taking things with George and trust me, it is a very positive sign. A brand who knows what to do with its client is a sign of longevity and new strength in their partnership. They have these visions because they are starting to see the market and buzz building up, alongside with more chances that he gets to show his personality off-track through interviews, events, etc that he is invited to. This is actually a very good form of personal branding. And honestly, the trend is going upwards and this is actually helping him career wise because with the way he is and the more people get to know the real him and his personality, he will attract a lot of sponsors that fits him too. Not only team sponsors but also individual sponsors in the future as well 👀
I understand that some grussell sprouts might not view this favorably because there are some people who will only like him for their looks, are toxic, etc but there are some positives to take from this "seemingly new but nothing new" boom that he got from the past 6-10 months. For the real grussell sprouts out there, let's root for him the way we always do! 🩵💓🩵💓

super sorry if this is a dumb question but i’ve getting stuck into f2 and f3 this year and i’ve tried to find videos about this but didn’t really find the answer i was looking for.
if f2 and f3 are spec series, other than maybe having more experienced personnel i guess, why are some teams better than others? is there a difference in set up or better tools depending on the team?
also, side question, what is the whole thing about like the cursed second ART seat like how is it cursed lol?
it comes down to resources and operational functionality. some teams will have more engineers and more data analysis capacity, better facilities at their factory, more simulation. it can come down to the tools they use and the amount of time they can spend on each car, with quite often one car in a team (the one that's paid the most for the seat) having an advantage. things like knowledge of tyre management and being able to properly prepare the tyres make a huge difference to a driver's ability to perform.
that can mean and certainly has that talented drivers get buried by their car just not being anywhere near the pace. you can be the best you can but if you've got an engine that isn't performing and a car that can't find the balance then you'll struggle. Screaming Meals is a really good intro to this; in amongst all the wine chat they do definitely get into how different the cars are between teams - the episode with Max Fewtrell talks about it quite a lot.
which isn't to say talent doesn't stand out or that you can cover for a lack of it with a good car. you have to be genuinely good to win an F2/3 race, it's just that you can also be genuinely good and not be able to show it.
I don't know if I really believe in there being a curse on the second ART seat but it sort of started in this era of the new F2 cars when George Russell and Jack Aitken were there, in 2018. Jack was George's closest rival for the GP3 title the previous year, they were absolutely on a level; they get to F2 and Jack's car makes him look like a fucking idiot who has no idea what he's doing.
the current F2 chassis had a very difficult teething period including an extended chunk of that first season where they couldn't do standing starts (so had to start behind the safety car) because clutch mapping was so hard multiple cars were stalling on the grid. they had to be given extra testing to try and sort it out and it was extremely difficult for a lot of teams to get to a place where the drivers could have any confidence whatsoever that they'd make it off the grid.
it's true that it tends to be one driver performing better than the other in ART but some of the time that has a reasonable explanation. do I, for instance, think there is a reason that Nyck de Vries won the year Nikita Mazepin was his team mate and came 20th? yes and it's a skill issue.
Martins and Pourchaire are fairly evenly matched, so far. Martins has the advantage of maturity (he's "too old" for F1 which is stupid given Pourchaire clearly did not get an advantage in showing his talent by moving up so young) but F2 is tricky.

F1 2022 Re-Watch: Round 4 - Emilia Romagna
Alrightly besties I’m back shouting about races that happened months ago!! (We can thank the ROC brain rot for reminding me to carry on with this). If you have no idea what’s going on you can re-read my previous post here)
All I really remember from this one is that Seb got his first points finish of the year (P8, woo!). So, on we go!
Fingers crossed I’m on the international feed this time
Unrelated I also have popcorn
Anyway F1 intro
(do do dododo do do dooooooo)
I am on the international feed 🥳 (hi Crofty!)
(ugh remember when Ferrari were leading both championships 😭)
wet/damp start???? I do not remember this whatsoever
Seb in... P13. I’ll take it. (we get Sewis on the grid though!!)
ugh this was a sprint race weekend. ew.
iirc we’re gonna get some broken tifosi hearts today 😑
[Start/Lap 1]: Yup, Ferraris somewhat trounced at the start
oop Dan on Sainz turn 1 violence.
SEB INTO P9 THAT’S MY BOY!!!!!
aaaaand Safety Car
daaaamn Lando’s start was zoomy
[Lap 2]: Kevin??? in P5???? Viking power & midfield stay winning
Aston Martin safety car my beloved!!!
Teeeeeeed!!!! (I will always endure the rest of the Sky team for Ted)
[Lap 5]: SEB GOT PAST NANDO, THAT’S MY BOY
(insert quote from Abu Dhabi about how Fernando and Seb have always raced each other)
Seb in P8 🥰🥰🥰
Fernando racing Seb and Lewis on the same day, did we briefly go back to 2012?
[Lap 6]: Oh shit that’s a big hole in Alonso’s sidepod 😬
The Alpine said ‘fuck this shit I’m out’
[Lap 8]: The parallel of the Tifosi groans on lap 1 to the cheers when Charles got past Lando
Also, Imola actually seems like a good track. Not bad addition to the calendar (unlike all the new street circuits 😭)
[Lap 9]: Oof that Merc porpoising is bad
That’s a very ominous looking rain radar ngl
[Lap 11]: Kevin channelling his inner Gandalf with Russell
[Lap 12]: Val getting the popcorn out watching Kevin v George
The midfield once again providing the bulk of the entertainment. We thank you for your service.
[Lap 13]: Class zero to one rain???? What does that mean??? McLaren explain????
Seb sighting!!
Back to weather jargon, what the fuck is class zero rain?? a drop??? the weird misty rain that just makes everything damp. I need to know.
[Lap 15]: The inters are not having fun it seems. Make better tyres Pirelli.
Livery watch: Aston Martin preeeeeeetty 💚
[Lap 16]: Thank you Crofty for remembering that Imola is home race no 1 for Alpha Tauri too
(Yes, I am a midfield stan in case this wasn’t clear)
f1blr 🤝 Sky F1: roasting the FIA for their decisions
[Lap 18]: Seb in the pits for slicks 👀
pls don’t rain pls don’t rain pls don’t rain
[Lap 19]: And you pit for slicks, and you pit for slicks, everyone pits for slicks!!
Lewis on Esteban pitlane violence?????
Ferrari could have brought in Charles at the same time as Perez, but they didn’t. I’m having bad flashbacks.
[Lap 20]: ayyyyyyy Seb P7!!!!
Alex got past Lewis???? I did not have Williams overtaking a Merc on my 2022 bingo
ew no don’t go to Horner I don’t want to hear his opinion on anything
[Lap 22]: We still don’t have DRS??? wild
the racing has been decent though
[Lap 25]: Lewis P14. Ouch 😔
[Lap 29]: Missing - Ferrari’s straight line speed. If found please return to Maranello
[Lap 32]: Also Missing - DRS. Please return to the FIA ASAP.
ugh, the race was fun when it was damp. It’s now a bit dull. Past half distance at least.
DRS RETURNETH!! 🥳🥳🥳
aww Mama Gasly.
[Lap 38]: Toto sighting!!
Ted bringing up Seb unprompted. Big mood.
[Lap 41]: Verstappen lapping Lewis. pain.
[Lap 44]: Shit’s bad when Charles is asking about Plan D.
[Lap 48]: Yuki getting into P8!! good for him!!
no wait don’t get past Seb
ah shit is this how Seb drops from 7th to 8th?
Seb praise on comms though we love to hear it
[Lap 50]: Charles in the pits. Is this Plan D or E?
ohhh the old ‘pit for the sofest tyres to get the fastest lap’ trick. nevermind.
asdfghjkl Red Bull pitting Perez to do the exact same thing. F1 is a Serious Sport™️.
Oh they’re pitting Verstappen too. alright then.
[Lap 52]: Oh damn Charles has caught up to Perez maybe Ferrari weren’t clowning.
[Lap 53]: Yuki has indeed caught up to Seb. by P7 you were wonderful while it lasted.
[Lap 54]: SHIT CHARLES SPUN WHAT
ohhhhhhhh no
Well, my memory didn’t fail me. We did get some tifosi heartbreak.
big oof at that replay.
[Lap 56]: Meanwhile Lewis still can’t get past Pierre.
[Lap 57]: Potential Bottas on Russell violence? 👀
5 Laps left. Perhaps my popcorn was a good idea.
[Lap 59]: And Charles gets past Seb. nvm.
Light rain at the last two laps????? Mum can you pick me up I’m scared.
Livery watch: I’m begging McLaren to have less black and more papaya on the livery this year.
[Lap 62]: I’m not seeing any rain. Are we safe??? I feel like I’m being lulled into a false sense of security.
oop, Charles into P6
[Lap 63/Finish]: I had legit forgotten about Verstappen after he lapped Lewis ngl.
Lando P3!! Good for him!
Damn Russell just kept P4
SEB P8 FIRST POINTS OF THE YEAR HELL YEAH!!!!!
Double AM points finish too we love to see it.
Well, that was def a better race than Aus, despite the really dull middle section when there was no DRS. Still made I completely forgot that it was a damp/dry race, the opening laps were probably my highlight. The Russell/Bottas battle was v fun to watch even though they kept their positions. Overall, 7 and a half front wings out of 10. Up next... Miami 😶

Russian Central Asia, 1867-1917: A Study In Colonial Rule, Richard A. Pierce (This is from 1960. "This book describes events under Imperial Russian rule, treating the period in the light of the conflict between nineteenth-century concepts "the white man's burden" and the awakening aspirations of colonial peoples, and as part of the contest between Western imperialism and the Islamic world." I'm curious to see what's said, but I think I should save this reading for later.)
Pre-Tsarist and Tsarist Central Asia: Communal Commitment and Political Order in Change, Paul Georg Geiss (READ THIS NEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It at least claims to talk about various central asian cultures! Follow the bibli like the oregon trail)
Everyday Life in Central Asia: Past and Present, Jeff Sahadeo, Russell Zanca (Part 1 Background, Part 2 Intro, 2, 3, and some skimming through the rest of the book, especially in the beginning to try to find gender contexts. Read chapter 22 and 23 if time/for curiosity.)
Thus Spake the Dervish: Sufism, Language, and the Religious Margins in Central Asia, 1400-1900, Alexandre Papas; Caroline Kraabel (Interesting date cut-offs, most continue until 1917. Is there a reason, other than the convenient millennium? This is mostly about Islamic mysticism, or sufism, but it might be worth it to skim)
Russia and Central Asia: Coexistence, Conquest, Convergence, Shoshana Keller (Intro, Chapters 1-4, maaaaaybe the start of 5. Curious how this person is going to interpret "centuries of sporadic war" into "coexistence", not sure I trust this one. We'll see!)
The Russian Conquest of Central Asia: A Study in Imperial Expansion, 1814-1914, Alexander Morrison (This is more war focused, I might look it over once I'm more comfortable with the dates/cultures I actually want to work inside)
Central Asia and the Himalayan Kingdoms (Armies of the Nineteenth Century: Asia), Ian Heath (not sure I actually trust this one. I'll grab it, but it's low on the priority list)
Muslims in Central Asia: Expressions of Identity and Change, Jo-Ann Gross (editor), Edward A. Allworth (editor) (worth checking out, 15th century to present. Hopefully useful for understanding what Islam looked like to women at this point - not sure the character/s will be Muslim, but useful nonetheless.)
Beyond the Pass: Economy, Ethnicity, and Empire in Qing Central Asia, 1759-1864, James A. Millward (worth peeking at, not sure I'm going to go this far east, but hey.)
The Early Coinage of Central Asia, Michael Mitchiner (I don't need this, mostly grabbing it because the idea of including a tiny detail that makes exactly 1 historian wig out over seeing it entertains me)
Central Asia: One Hundred Thirty Years of Russian Dominance, A Historical Overview, Edward A. Allworth (preface, part 1, part 2: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Might be useful, especially as it seems to focus on some culture!)
Silk and cotton: textiles from the Central Asia that was, Kushner, Robert;Meller, Susan (yaaaaaaaaaay images to give some set dressing and reference! I want to find some sources on clothing, too)
History of civilizations of Central Asia, Bosworth, Clifford Edmund;Osimi, ̄ Muhȧmmad (Part of v.4 (historical, social, economic), more important v.5, start of v. 6. By the time I read this I'll probably Get It.)
Inside central asia: a political and cultural history of uzbekistan, turkmenistan, kazakhstan, kyrgyzstan, tajikistan, turkey, and iran, Hiro, Dilip (gimme that sexy sexy culture. Yet another preface without table of contents samples)
A ride to Khiva: an adventure in Central Asia, Burnaby, Fred;Hopkirk, Peter;White-Spunner, Barney (not sure if this will be useful. at all.)
The Bukharan Crisis: A Connected History of 18th Century Central Asia, Scott C. Levi (Possibly useful for putting some of the world around Tselemun into context)
Slavery and Empire in Central Asia, Jeff Eden (first book that starts off mentioning slavery. I'm very curious as to why this one does, and the hundred or so other books I've pawed through don't. Also curious about these lines: "Slavery strained Central Asia's relations with Russia, England, and Iran, and would serve as a major justification for the Russian conquest of this region in the 1860s-70s. Challenging the consensus that the Russian Empire abolished slavery with these conquests, Eden uses these documents to reveal that it was the slaves themselves who brought about their own emancipation by fomenting the largest slave uprising in the region's history." Fascinating and alarming, if no other book has mentioned this.
The Rise and Fall of Khoqand, 1709-1876: Central Asia in the Global Age, Scott C. Levi (more context!)
Sufism in Central Asia: New Perspectives on Sufi Traditions, 15th-21st Centuries, Devin A. Deweese; Jo-Ann Gross (I probably only care about the first half of this book, if I care at all)
Monuments of Central Asia, a Guide to the Archaeology, Art and Architecture of Turkestan, Edgar Knobloch (I'll take a peek at it, not sure how useful. Can't hurt to have.)
A History of Russia, Central Asia and Mongolia, Volume II: Inner Eurasia from the Mongol Empire to Today, 1260–2000, David Christian (might have done this already, I coiuldn't find it; more history! Yay.)
Being Muslim in Central Asia. Practices, Politics, and Identities, Marlène Laruelle (most interested in: "The volumes discusses what it means to be a Muslim in today’s Central Asia by looking at both historical and sociological features, investigates the relationship between Islam, politics and the state, the changing role of Islam in terms of societal values, and the issue of female attire as a public debate.") Potentially useful!
Waqf in Central Asia: Four Hundred Years in the History of a Muslim Shrine, 1480–1889, R. D. McChesney (How important is this? Is this something a Muslim character in Bhukhara would know about? In any of the other khanates? We'll find out!)
The Surrogate Proletariat: Moslem Women and Revolutionary Strategies in Soviet Central Asia, 1919–1929, Gregory J. Massell (Worth checking out, has some historical background)
Islamic Central Asia: An Anthology of Historical Sources, Scott C. Levi, Ron Sela (kissing you <3 yaaaay primary documents)
Visions of Justice: Sharīʿa and Cultural Change in Russian Central Asia, Paolo Sartori (mostly interested in what convictions changed from rather than to)
The Empire of the Steppes. A History of Central Asia, Grousset R. (LOTS OF DIFFERENT TRIBES!!! Ilu so. This is from 1939, and also originally in French.)
History of civilizations of Central Asia. Volume V. Development in contrast: from the sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, Chahryar A., Habib I. (more culture yaaaay)
Xinjiang: China's Muslim Borderland, S. Frederick Starr. (Not sure if there's much useful here.)
The Russians in Central Asia : their occupation of the Kirghiz steppe and the line of the Syr-Daria : their political relations with Khiva, Bokhara, and Kokan : also descriptions of Chinese Turkestan and Dzungaria, Valikhanov, Ch. Ch.; Michell, John,Michell, Robert; Venyukov M.I. (second hand source babyyyy)
Music and the Play of Power in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia, Laundan Nooshin (not sure how useful, but worth investigating, even just to give musical flavor)
Central Asia and Caucasus, Journal of Social and Political Studies (might be the wrong era, we'll see)
Ferghana Valley: The Heart of Central Asia, Frederick S. Starr, Frederick S. Starr, Baktybek Beshimov, Inomjon I. Bobokulov, Pulat Shozimov (i want intro, chapter 1, 2, 3)
Islam after Communism: Religion and Politics in Central Asia, Adeeb Khalid (This author again! The book I read was wonderful. I don't know how useful this will be, but it talks about insights from the study of Islam and Soviet history, so I'll check it out)
Central Asia Reader: The Rediscovery of History, H.B. Paksoy (only parts 1 and 2 are of interest, and I'm not convinced they will be useful)

Alright PART 1 of the Valrussy fic this accidentally ended up being super long so I'll drop PART 2 in your askbox super soon. This one is mostly an intro and background info opener:
30 November 2022 Monaco
The race at Abu Dhabi must have been the most controversial race in the history of F1 so far ofcourse what else could be expected when 15 out 20 cars DNF especially when one of the remaining 5 cars caused the other 15 DNFs. Given Latifi's record people were unsure whether this was a revenge tactic for being kicked out of F1 or genuine incompetence on his part.
George knew that he shouldn't think this way on some level he remembered that Nicholas was his friend and longest teammate but when you have the win snatched away from you on the last lap of the race it's hard not to be bitter. Instead of celebrating his win with the people he loved best he had ended up spending half of the week under the care of an overly attentive Toto. He had no idea how Toto ended up being his emergency medical contact but he was mostly certain that had not been his own decision mostly likely something Toto had done on his behalf. Lewis had come to see him in the hospital but by now he knew Lewis didn't care not really he had just shown because he had to and brought flowers that George hated. Lewis had stayed for barely 10 minutes blabbering on about some pretty little German (or was it Finnish?) blonde that he was meeting in Greece for the winter break. But it was his parting statement that had made George wish he had the energy to throw the IV stand at his retreating figure "You should really get rid of Toto as your emergency contact you know he tends to go a bit overboard he was the same with Rosberg". Ofcourse Lewis thought it was that simple because he only ever got the good side of Toto. No one knew the real Toto Wolff not like he and Nyck did. Well maybe not even Nyck knew the Toto the way he did. Toto was his first time. He remembers being 18 knowing there was only one way to his dream and bargaining away the only thing that he had that was worth giving. He remembers spending hours crying into Alex's arms after but refusing to tell Alex what was wrong.
These days he could probably stop their little arrangement but more and more he found himself seeking out Toto maybe his business was now just hardwired to need Toto. Even if it made him sick to his stomach. Even if his brilliant, beautiful, loving girlfriend had been slipping him articles on grooming and therapist's numbers since the first time she'd walked in on them and he knew she was a saint because anyone else would have dumped his ass and sold the story to the highest bidder.
An FIA representative was here to see him now sitting across from him in Toto's living room. She seemed as nervous as he felt. "As you know Mr. Russell we having a long standing tradition of a winner's room" she said delicately "and well this time you've been chosen but since you were ill we agreed to postpone the winner's room till you recovered"
He almost laughs with relief at this point he would do anything to be out of Toto's house "That's alright with me" He says trying to keep the joy out of his voice " but I didn't keep up with who won to be honest with you. Could you clue me in on where I need to go?"
She smiles brightly and says "We'll be flying you down to Finland. Valtteri Bottas was the 2022 Abu Dhabi grand prix winner"
He promptly vomits on Toto's expensive rug. He remembered what Valtteri had promised. Why him?
I am once again overwhelmed by my anons who are worth their weight in GOLD and other precious metals and minerals 🙏🙏🙏🙏 please save this somewhere that isn't my askbox 😭
when I tell you I'M HOOTING AND HOLLERING. 15 DNFS!!! An Alfa Romeo win!!!!! Latifi said aite I'm out!!!! 🚶‍♂ George about to WIN his first race getting bonked on the head...... something about Lewis not actually caring about George but showing up cause he's expected and bringing flowers he hates??? *chef's kiss* and then he's vacationing with some pretty blonde German or Finn 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 IN GREECE TOO?!?!!! you did THAT (for me🥺).....
Lewis only getting the good side of Toto..... only nycky and georgie porgie pudding pie knowing the Real Toto...... who dangled a seat in front of him at 18.... the way you were scientifically created in a lab to write something so specific to ME sgdjdjd and then he went home and cried to ALEX *faints* toto being creepily overly invested...... and then George sweet stockholm syndromed self defeating fuck going BACK to him, hardwired to need Toto... cause yea it's terrible but better the devil you know, than the devil you don't??? his poor gf....... naur not the grooming articles and therapists George will never go to cause Nothing Happened and He Is Fine, Actually..... the Dynamics here!!! he's in Toto's living room and he can't leave!!! Until literal FIA obligations come to play and we haven't even gotten to the valrussy.... oh my go d I'm at the edge of my seat. also thank you for making him throw up on Toto's expensive rug like a little chihuahua...
I'm sitting with clasped hands for part 2, 🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️ this has truly brought me so much JOY thank you!!!!!! i hope I can convince you to give it a home on ao3

Teddy bear - George Russell
Tumblr media
A short but fluffy little thing. I couldn’t really think about anything else after seeing this photo 🥺
Special thanks - @formulola for sharing that photo and giving me all the feels, idea ❤️
Using the pass that Sara, one of the people behind the team’s christmas project, gave me a few days ago I entered the paddocks and immediately went to the Williams’ motorhome so i could meet up with her. After last season this one was a lot calmer, making it possible for me to travel with George to most of his races. I didn’t meet him yet after flying back home for the past two weeks and as I was planning a surprise for him it wasn’t a possibility to get my usual pass for the circuit from him. Luckily his media team was in on the secret and could get one for today that I could use before George would give me the other one tonight.
„ Hello! ” I quickly greeted everyone when I stepped into their office and Sara stood up as soon as she saw me. „ Hope  I’m not too early. ” I let out a sigh as we exited the room and I followed him inside another one that already had the cameras and presents set up.
„ No, you’re perfectly timed. They just left for the track walk so we at least have time before they would get back. ” She shook her head with a smile, closing the door behind me.
„ Even if he sees me here, he won’t know what’s happening. ” I shrugged a little, chuckling as I took my bag off my shoulder so I could open it. „ I don’t have it wrapped yet. We had like two papers at home and I knew he would recognize them. ” I got the plushie out from the bottom of my bag finally, fixing his little shirt.
„ That’s okay. I still have to wrap some, one more won’t break me. ” She shrugged with a smile, taking the teddy from my hand and placing it on the table next to the papers.
„ I can help if me staying isn’t a problem. ” I offered, taking a seat across from her when she handed me a roll of wrapping paper. I took it as her accepting my idea and I was happy to help, so we can be ready quicker.
It didn’t take long for us to finish up the task and I was just putting the last piece of tape onto my gift when we heard the guys arriving. The only things I knew it about was hearing George’s voice, and I panicked for a moment. By reflex I hid the green papered present at the bottom of the pile, even though I knew he wouldn’t be able to see inside of it. It was seconds after I got up from the chair when the door to the room opened and George’s head popped inside. He was just about to greet Sara when he saw me and could not stay outside. Seconds later he was next to me, with his arms around my body and I let out a laugh as I hugged him back.
„ Thought you wouldn’t get here until the evening… ” He looked at me curiously when he could finally let go of me a little. „ Not like I’m complaining, you just surprised me. ” He added, chuckling and I didn’t even know how much my ears missed that sound, until now.
„ Yeah, that was the plan. I finished up yesterday and caught an earlier plane here. ” I shrugged a little, grinning up at him when we let go of eachother. That’s when I realised how hard it will be to keep the secret to myself for the next day, until they’re gonna finally film the unwrapping.
~ ° ~
As Christmas time and the end of the year was getting closer all the F1 teams made sure they had enough content before the holidays would fully start. At Williams they already got the guys to film a little present opening video, where they had to get a stocking together for their teammate. Just when they gave the fans a sneak peak, they got another idea and let some of the fans send in little things for their drivers to open up. It was of course quite monitored, and they checked everything before it would get into the video as a present to either George or Nicky. I would have attended the filming anyways, as I always did when I was at the race circuit with them at the time, but then I realised it would be the perfect opportunity to surprise George with what I have been hiding from him for the last two weeks or so.
„ How far back would you like your gift to be? ” Sara asked me, while they were getting George ready behind the table. My little present was already next to all the other wrapped ones. I knew which one contained the little plushie, so I would know when it was about to be opened
„ It can be wherever you would like, but I don’t really know how much he will be able to focus after that. ” I let out a little laugh, making her smile too as she went back to get all of them in order.
I saw as she put it around the middle, and I was about to laugh at how unfocused George will be after opening it when he looked straight at me and I had to make sure to only just smile. I didn’t want to spoil the surprise for him, and he knew me too well. It was already hard to stay silent about this for the last week, as I really wanted to plan the perfect announcement. This felt like a creative way of doing so, even though I was second guessing myself if he would be okay with me doing it so publicly, but I knew it was just probably hormones playing with my head.
„ Ready? ” We heard the cameraman ask and as soon as everyone gave him a nod they could finally start the quick countback. I watched as he started the camera and George looked right into it, to start his intro that they asked him to do.
I sat down a few meters away so I wouldn’t be in the shot but I could see him unwrapping everything. He seemed excited and I couldn’t help the smile that got on my face as we got closer and closer to the light green papered one, that was covering a piece of our future. It was so strange to know how much of our life will be changed in just a few months, hopefully only in good ways. When my present was handed to him I forced myself to take a deep breath as he started with the unwrapping. Just seconds later it’s ears were already visible and he took the rest of it out while a smile got on his face. It had a tiny Williams shirt on, with the ’World’s #1 dad’ text across it. I saw as confusion ran through his eyes but he still looked up at the camera with a smile.
„ I don’t really know what to say, but thank you! ” He let out a laugh and looked down at the little bear again, trying to figure out what it actually meant. „ Do we have a note for this one? ” He asked Sara, as there were some which included little letters from the sender, to explain the present.
She looked at me as an answer and when I looked back at George he was already looking at me confused. I already had my hand in front of my mouth to cover my grin, as I knew the camera would turn to me forsure. I motioned for him to turn the plushie in his hand so he could see the little ’to be’ text on his back. I wanted it on it, but more hidden so the bear could be relevant even after they were born, even though I knew he would love it nevertheless. He was still confused as he looked up at me again, his eyebrows furrowed. It made me laugh how clueless he was and that he couldn’t figure it out, even with all the tips.
„ I just hope they won’t inherit your discursive skills. ” Sara spoke up, making us all laugh as he looked around gnawing at his bottom lip, before his eyes landed on me again. I had my hand on my stomach instinctively, giving him another tip towards the solution.
He needed a second or two and one more look at the teddy’s clothing before his jaw went slack at the realisation. We moved at the same time and met in the middle as he hugged me to himself. The plushie was still in his hands as I hid my face in the junction of his neck and shoulder. I knew I was tearing up but I was sure he wasn’t any better if the wetness of his cheek on my neck was any indication. We stayed there for a second longer as I felt his hands clutch onto my sides. When we finally parted a little I leaned back to look at his face and with a chuckle, tried to get the tears off his cheeks with my thumbs. I gladly received his kiss, although tried to keep it short in front of his team, who were all clapping around us.
„ I knew that there was something… You were too quiet and sneaky. ” He sighed but I could hear the happiness in his voice although I knew it was probably still quite unbelievable to him. „ Since when? ” He shortly questioned before he would have to sit back so they could finish filming.
„ Around two months now. ” I answered, letting him rest his forehead on my shoulder again as my hand came up so my fingers could comn through the short strands at the nape of his neck. „ Go, wrap up the challenge. I’ll tell you everything afterwards. ” I promised him in a whisper, before giving one last little kiss to the corner of his mouth as he was lifting up his head.
I thought he would never let go of me but then gathered some willpower and stepped back from me so he could go back to the chair. I sat back down in my previous spot, pulling the light sweater around me a bit more, while I watched him take the last few presents so he could open them up. I knew he wasn’t as focused as before, but luckily his team was rather happy for us than angry with him for rushing a little in the end. They didn’t even try to get him to say a full outro, probably giving it to Nicky rather, so that he could leave a little earlier with me by his side, as he didn’t really want to let go of me after I was back in his proximity.
In the end they made a fully separate video just from the parts where he got the Teddy bear unwrapped and finally realised what was actually happening. The challenge came out just a few weeks after the shooting and then with our permission they shared ’our’ video on Christmas Day. This way we had time to tell our families and friends, so they didn’t have to find out from a YouTube video but at the same time the fans didn’t have to wait a lot longer. Never have I ever thought they would take it so well and we would get so much love and well wishes from them from the moment the video was public for them too. It made the holiday season even better as we felt like we were celebrating with all of them from around the world. I would have never changed it though.

The Currently Unnamed Fic
Chapter 2 - i think this is now named An Intro to New Life but im not 100% sure?
The boy led me down the hill and to the Kansas house. There was a man and a few other people playing a card game. I mean, I thought they were people, but they looked like goat boys. Something was nagging at me in the back of my mind, like something about this was familiar, but I couldn't figure it out.
"Mr. D," the kid said, "we have a new camper. And- hold up," he turned to me, "what are your pronouns?"
"She/her."
He turned back to Mr. D. "She's fifteen!"
Mr. D placed his cards face down on the table. "Fifteen? Whoever your parent is is awfully stupid."
Some useful information, I suppose. And, parent? My mom said she was bad at math in school, and my dad. . .
"My mom mentioned something about my dad when she dropped me off here," I said.
"Well, you're not one of mine," Mr. D said, and averted his attention back to the game. "Owen-"
"Oliver."
"-would you mind showing her around?"
"Oh, I would love to, but," the kid, Oliver, flashed the book he was reading, "I've got some reading to do. And I'm also redirecting mortals, so. . . . Catch ya later," he said walking away.
"He could've just said he didn't want to," Mr. D said under his breath (but still loud enough for everyone to hear). "Uh, Garrett Smith! Can you show around the new kid?" he asked to the nearest kid in the strawberry field.
The kid looked around my age, maybe a bit older. They had curly strawberry blond hair and tan skin like they spent almost all of their time outside. "Sure thing, just let me put this-"
"Nonsense, Sandra over there will take care of whatever it is." Mr. D interrupted. "I've got a card game to finish, so if you would please, George Salazar, show around, er, what's your name?" He turned to me.
"Elizabeth Herman," I answered. "I go by Ellie, though."
"Yes, show Lizzy Henderson around."
"On it Mr. D," the kid said. I didn't trust that their name was Garrett Smith or George Salazar.
I left the table and met the kid at the bottom of the stairs. They greeted me with a bright smile. "Hey, I'm Greyson Summit," they said. "I wish I were George Salazar. Oh, to be on Broadway, instead picking strawberries for the god of wine," they said dreamily.
I returned a smile. "I'm Ellie. Nice to meet you."
"Oh, and don't worry," Greyson added, "you don't have to bow down to Mr. D. He doesn't do much."
I nodded my head. Like Perry the Platypus, I thought. "Why would I need to bow down to him?" I asked.
"Oh, right, I should explain," Greyson said. "That's Dionysus, the god of wine and all that. You said your mom said something about your dad, right? I'm assuming she meant he's a god too."
I felt like I had been hit by a brick. I probably was at some point if I didn't remember basic stuff from sixth grade English, but that's not the point.
"Wait, I think I've read about this place," I said.
Greyson got a confused look on their face. "Like, in The Lightning Thief?" I nodded my head. "Woah." They laughed. "Not to be dramatic, but you should probably be dead. Let's head to the east."
Greyson began walking off towards what I assumed was the east, leaving me the opposite of "no thoughts, head empty."
I ran to catch up with them.
"By the time we're done it should be time for lunch, then I'll show you the other side after," they were saying.
"Sounds like a plan," I said.
We made our way along the creek towards the east woods. Greyson wasn't the best tour guide. We would pass by something and they'd randomly point out what it was. At least it wasn't a safari. I nearly giggled at the thought.
"Volleyball court. Art's and crafts. Hermes kids doing. . . something. Oh no, there's fire again."
I watched as a couple kids tried to stomp out a small flame in the grass.
"Again?" I asked.
"Yeah," said Greyson. "Come on."
They tried to strike up small talk. Unfortunately, both of us were quite bad at making conversation. Maybe it was best we weren't as good at striking things up as those Hermes kids.
I tried thinking of some icebreakers and introduction questions while we walked around.
"What are your pronouns?" I asked.
"They/them," Greyson said. "I'm genderfluid, but it's easier to use they/them pronouns than correcting people all the time. But if it really bothers me sometime I'll correct you, just a heads up."
"Cool. Thanks for letting me know."
More silence.
"Your pronouns are she/her, right?" they asked.
I nodded.
"So. . . where are you from?" Greyson asked after a bit more silence.
"Arizona," I answered.
"Oh, cool," they responded.
More silence.
"Where are you from?" I asked.
"Kansas."
Out of all the new and crazy info I'd gotten that day, that one won first place by far. "But I thought Kansas didn't exist?"
"What?"
I shrugged.
We made it to the rock wall. The heat emitting from it reminded me of Arizona summers. A girl dropped down nearby where we were standing.
"Beat ya!" she shouted up. She looked over at us. "Oh, hey Greyson. Who's this?"
The girl was short. Well, maybe short to me, I'm 5'8". She was maybe 5'4"? (Is that short?) She had dark brown skin and vitiligo. She also had brown eyes and dark brown coily hair.
"This is Ellie," Greyson said. "Do you think Kansas exists?"
She blinked. "What?"
"Do you think Kansas exists?" Greyson repeated.
"Yes, of course," the girl answered.
"Even before you met me?" they asked.
She paused, before answering, "Well, I hadn't given it much thought before."
"Damn, alright," Greyson said. "Ellie, this is Leila."
"Nice to meet you," I said.
Another girl dropped down from the wall. She had black hair with a split dye that was hot pink. Her hair was steaming, and her tan skin looked blistered in a couple spots. "You cheated!" She pointed at Leila accusingly.
"How do you cheat at a rock wall?" I asked.
"How can you think Kansas doesn't exist?!" Greyson asked me.
"Hold up, you didn't think Kansas existed?" the new girl asked me. "Wait, who are you?"
"I'm Ellie," I answered.
"Cool, I'm Chleo," she said. "Anyways, you thought Kansas didn't exist?"
"I thought it was made up for the plot of the Wizard of Oz!" I said. They all just looked at me. "How many people have you met that are from Kansas? What has ever happened in Kansas? What exists there?" I asked.
"Well, I know Greyson. . . ." Chleo said.
"The National World War I Museum is in Kansas City!" Greyson claimed. We all just stared at them. They put their hands up defensively.
"So. . . how do you cheat at rock wall climbing?" I asked again, hoping to drop the subject of Kansas.
"Oh I'm a daughter of Hecate," Leila said. She snapped her fingers and her and Chleo had switched places as Chleo went to rest her arm on Leila's shoulder. "The mist is easy to manipulate for me." She shrugged, ignoring Chleo on the ground.
"You bitch!" Chleo exclaimed from the floor. "Which also means, she cheated," Chleo said, getting up.
"No, I just used my resources!" said Leila. "They tell us to do that."
A horn sounded in the distance. "Come on Ellie, we have to line up for lunch," Greyson said. "We can go with the Hermes cabin, since they're here." He glanced above my head before walking towards a forming line of kids with mischievous looks on their faces, like I was told I had.
"Who's your godly parent?" I asked Greyson.
"My dad's Apollo," they said quietly. "We're not really supposed to talk in lines but lots of people do anyways."
We walked in silence to the dining pavilion. We went over the creek, passed by a huge arena, an archery range, the cabins. I knew there wouldn't be much left for Greyson to show me after lunch, but I knew continuing to let them show me around was better than to be friendless.
I was handed a plate of food and sat on the end of table eleven next to a kid with curly light brown hair and hazel eyes. He looked older than me.
"Oh, hey newbie!" he said. "I'm Austin."
"I'm Ellie," I said. "Nice to meet you Austin."
"Nice to meet you too Ellie," he said. "I'm the head of cabin eleven and one of the camp counselors this year. It doesn't matter too much, but I suppose it's good to know. Come on newbie, it's our turn at the fire." We all got up and walked over to the big bronze brazier in the middle of the pavilion.
I watched as Austin pushed a portion of his plate into the fire. "Hermes," he said.
I pushed a portion of brisket into the flames. "Hermes?" I said, though it came out as more of a question. Austin laughed and shook his head, and we went back to table eleven.
Back at the table I talked a bit more with Austin. He told me he has a twin sister, Kaite, and how he's from Michigan and moved to New Jersey a few years ago. He's turning nineteen this October and is really into crafting because he grew up doing it with his mother as a kid.
"What did you mean it didn't matter that you're head of cabin eleven?" I asked.
"Not that part, the part about being camp counselor," he said. "Camp counselors and cabin counselors are different. We call cabin counselors cabin heads to avoid confusion, but you'll hear both. Cabin heads just make sure none of their siblings are being absolutely stupid and lead them to their activities. Prep for inspection, all that. Camp counselors are more of like, the older sibling to everyone, they're all cabin heads, they do inspection, stuff like that. Kinda take charge. They're the people you go to if you need something. Some cabins have more than one counselor, by the way."
"What about Chiron?" I asked.
"Well, you'd go to him for super important stuff, like emergencies. A serious injury, an attack. Mr. D, well, just, never go D with an emergency. He'll most likely do nothing. Actually, he's good to go to if you have any questions regarding sexuality or gender identity." He paused for a moment, before continuing, "Camp leadership! Right!
"So once Percy and Annabeth -- you know who they are? -- Coolio, once they left everyone realized they forgot how to run the camp because they did everything and wars and all that jazz. Instead of trying to remember, they made new over-complicated systems to run the place. They work though. Until the older heroes came back. A couple summers ago the older campers came back to teach here." He pointed to the director's table. Along with Mr. D, I saw a few other adults chatting and eating. "Ever since they came back, us camp counselors have been kinda demoted. No one comes to us much anymore. Granted, they do know more, but it kinda sucks being demoted. Some of the cabin heads get replaced by the adults too, if they have an adult sibling here. But since they teach they're not around much for their cabin. It doesn't make too much sense." He shook his head.
"Maybe it's just that awkward telling a twenty year old what to do," I suggested. "Who are all the camp councelors?"
"There's me, Emma from the Aphrodite cabin, Ricky from the Apollo cabin, and Asia from the Iris cabin," Austin answered.
"You see? I just came to you for a question, you're not useless!" My words of encouragement didn't seem to make him all too much better. Though, I was never too good at encouraging others.
"I guess," he said. "That reminds me, after lunch is over I need to get you a copy of the Camp Half-Blood Confidential. And a shirt."
"The what now?"
"Years ago, after the last war, they were talking about what they would change about camp and all that, and Nico said the orientation video, which only he had seen. Everyone ended up watching it and they decided, 'Woah, this is terrible!' So they wrote a book."
They did what now? "That's stupid," I said. Who would write an important informational book for kids with dyslexia to read?
Austin looked at me questioningly. "What do-" He was cut off by a loud voice from elsewhere in the pavilion.
"Alright everyone," Mr. D stood up for announcements, "we have a new camper. Everyone say hi to Lizzy Henderson." There was a bit of hesitant applause before someone else from the director's table stood up.
"Maybe we should let her introduce herself," she said, giving a quick glare to Mr. D. He muttered something about how he did a fine job before the woman continued. Her gray eyes scanned the tables for the new face. "If you want to stand up so we can all see you..."
The blonde lady began to reminded me of a middle school English teacher. And I don't know how she didn't notice me, I was the only one not in bright orange. I should've stuck out like a sore thumb.
I stood and her eyes fell on me. Her smile wavered and she said something I couldn't make out to the man next to her, whose back was still facing me. She looked up again and continued, her smile returned. "How about you tell us your name, your age, and where you're from?" she asked.
Most eyes were on me, which bugged me because now I didn't know where to look. I decided to try keeping my eyes on the woman. "I'm Ellie Herman, I'm from Arizona, and I'm fifteen," I said.
I heard a few people start whispering around me. The lady furrowed her brows and looked back down at the man next to her, who then turned around to look at me. I noticed the man's black hair and sea green eyes, along with a nasty scar under his right eye, the same way I had imagined Luke's while reading the books. Then it hit me. The woman talking to me was Annabeth Chase, like, the Annabeth Chase.
"Do you know who your godly parent is yet?" Annabeth asked, sounding almost hopeful.
I shook my head. "No."
After a moment her smile returned. "Well, we're glad to have you here, Ellie." Annabeth turned to the rest of the campers. "Everyone welcome Ellie Herman, undetermined."

INTRO TO EMBER
( danielle rose russell , 24 looks 20, cis female, she/her ) The war is about to start EMBER MARSH. We see that you will be fighting for the MARSH family as a LYCAN. SHE reminds me of HOT AND STILL GLOWING EMBERS AFTER A FIRE HAS RAGED, AN INNER BATTLE OF RETICENCE AND DAUNTLESSNESS, BUBBLING LAUGHTER ON THE PURSE OF YOUR LIPS. We wish you luck. ( cat, 25, she/her, gmt/bst )
ABOUT
name: ember ruth marsh nicknames: em, red, little marsh, marsh age: 24, looks 20 gender: cis female pronouns: she/her sexuality: pansexual species: lycanthrope occupation: forensic scientist ( with a focus on blood spatter analysis ), with aspirations to become a forensic pathologist positive attributes: charming, compassionate, dauntless, ardent, tactile, loyal negative attributes: reticient, stubborn, naive, scrutinizing, unceasing, sarcastic fc: danielle rose russell
HEADCANONS
ember first turned a week after her 13th birthday ( and boy was it a doozy, although she’d been told since birth what shifting was like [ although an entirely individual experience ] and about her family affliction, and even though she felt prepared - she wasn’t. it was entirely out of her control and she realised soon enough into the transition that regardless of how prepared she’d tried to be, she wasn’t going to be able to control this -- her first transformation, she was just going to have to let it happen, go through it, survive it and figure out what to do afterwards. she came too the next day, unaware of her surrounding, uncomfortable and sore. the fact she was disassociated from her environment for a few moments really threw her and she cried. )
ember made it her mission, after her few first transformations to find a place where she had control ( or at least more of it ) of the experience.
although the girl of the Marsh family ( in regards to the children of george and kelly ) ember has always tried to tousle with her siblings and other family members as if she wasn’t the daughter ( and granddaughter ) of the alpha/s. of course; she’s less boisterous than her brothers, and perhaps a little more reserved than others ( although that doesn’t mean she can’t and won’t be bold ). if it’s possible to be a balanced lycan, that is she. she’s had the experience and love and care from her older family memebers to guide her, show her what to do and what not to do, and it really has benefitted her.
ember has never had an issue with blood or injury or violence; she’d had plenty of gory and horror movie sessions with friends that she shouldn’t have when younger, and there was the whole fact that she was a lycan and not unaccustomed to the more macabre side of life sometimes; but it lead her to her career path now. a forensic scientist ( going to crime scenes, carefully collecting and looking at evidence, examining and analysing it to help law enforcement catch criminals and solve crimes ).
( it’s no surprise ) ember loves dogs, and if she could, she’d buy a house and fill it with dogs. she has a chesnut lab setter ( labrador/red setter ) pup who she got from an old college friend whose dog accidentally got pregnant and had a litter of puppies. ember got dana ( named after dana scully ) about a year ago.
she loves everything noodles related; honestly, if it’s got noodles, it’s got her vote. of course, it’s important she have a balanced diet because she burns energy differently and needs her strength for shifting etc, but she can’t resist a noodle based meal. if you need to get into ember’s good books, want a favour, or need forgiveness, come bearing noodles.
ember is a dark reddy brown coloured wolf.
BIO
ember was born after 36 hours of labor, the middle marsh child for george and kelly marsh, and a baby girl no less. ( finally a girl after a rambunctious boy ) was it possible to be the youngest child, a girl; the only girl, and not be a princess? yes. because ember had no inkling of the spoilt baby troupe. she just wanted to be one of the family, play with her brother and cousins. and that didn’t change when her baby brother, Jeremy, came along. although yes she was the only girl, and doted on ( mama’s and daddy’s girl both equally ), she was still a marsh! she wasn’t a delicate porcelain doll that you couldn’t pick up without fear of breaking. but she was treated differently to the boys, because being a lycan was different for a woman. in little ways, but different, and with that came different lessons to be taught and understood. ember was born on an impossible hot day, and thank god for air con and ice chips because if not kelly marsh would not have gotten through it. but it was the mess of red hair atop her head that convinced her parents that ember was the right name for her, more so than the sorching weather outside.
ember always knew she wasn’t going to be alpha, or even beta. she’d never assumed she’d be any ranking in the pack, because of how many marsh’s came before her, but it didn’t stop her from wanting it. silently, quietly, patiently. she was ambitious, she was capable. she was... also thankful for the freedom that also gave her. she wasn’t as firmly fixed to the spot in cresthill as other’s were. she had the freedom to travel ( albeit for short amounts of time -- home was home and family is everything ) and study elsewhere.
she’d always had her eyes set on a challenging and perhaps more hands on//involved job, and it just so happened that she fell into the idea of forensic science and decided to look into the potential routes she could go into within that. although the end goal had always been forensic pathology, but after her brother’s brutal murder, ember paused her further study ( one year into a medical degree ) and found a job helping the Cresthill police department as a forensic scientist.
to hear that jeremy had been murdered ( not having been at home at the time ) was a surreal moment for ember, she remembered all the feeling and sensation rushing from her legs. it wasn’t until her hip ached from the impact of falling that she released she’d lost balance and fell to the ground. suddenly, she felt sick. very, very sick. and confused. and angry. and... she’d dropped everything to get home. there was no better way to express how she felt following his death and funeral than ...well, numb. something huge in her life was missing. but it was coming together with her family which helped her healing. being open and honest with Franklin helped hugely, and in truth, getting Dana helped lift her spirits and make her laugh again.
WANTED CONNECTIONS
a best friend -- either day one buddies or they were very young when they met and bonded! outside of franklin, this person is her go-to. ride and die buddies for life. an ex-partner/crush -- it’s a little awkward now, maybe they broke up well, or not so. but the fact is ember is over it now. perhaps they were friends first, or perhaps they’ve tried to maintain a friendship after. this is very open to discussion. work colleague -- work can be stressful and long and hard work sometimes, but these two have each other to keep them laughing or their spirits up. be it a perfectly timed coffee cup being put on a desk, or a well timed lunch break.  friends with benefits -- whether it’s late night after work, or when they’re stressed and want some relief, and laughter, and alcohol, they can call upon the other. there are no strings attached ( perhaps there’s family politics or maybe they just know the visions they have for the future don’t match at all ) and it’s just fun. ember really needed some fun in her life after losing some of her fire after Jeremy’s death, and she happened to find it between the sheets with this person. antagonist -- she isn’t sure why ( really, she doesn’t know ) but this person just really gets under her skin! she can’t place it, but it’s glaringly obviously there.
more to come!

‘Formula 1: Drive to Survive’ is a perfect intro to the best soap opera in sports
Tumblr media
The second season of the acclaimed Neflix show sets the stage for F1 racing’s future.
The second season of Netflix’s Formula 1: Drive to Survive dropped on Feb. 28, and it’s just as good as the extremely well-received first season. Like any good Millennial, I watched the entire series in a couple of days, even though the new Formula 1 season doesn’t start until March 15. The ten half-hour episodes are extremely bingeable.
Eight teams get significant air time over the show’s 10 episodes. The big teams sat out last year’s show, but after seeing how successful it was, they decided they wanted in on the action. Ferrari and Mercedes feature, but just like Season 1, the really good stuff comes from struggling teams like Williams and Haas.
Notably absent from the show are Racing Point and Alfa Romeo, who almost exactly met expectations last season, and return the same drivers for 2020. The producers opted not to force any drama for those teams. Fans of teenage shitposter/Twitch streamer/McLaren driver Lando Norris will also be disappointed to see that he’s barely mentioned.
What’s missing is much less important than what’s in the show, however. Drive to Survive is still amazing, and a perfect introduction to the best soap opera in sports. Minor spoilers below.
Is it a reality show? Is it a documentary? I don’t know, it’s just really good
I’m not really sure how you would classify Drive to Survive. It’s definitely more documentary than reality television, though the interviews feel very reality TV-influenced.
No matter what you call it, the show is made by the level of access that the producers are granted. Because the teams are promised that the show won’t air until the season ends and the driver lineup for the following season is set, they’re free to be themselves. It doesn’t feel like any of the teams’ drivers or principals are guarded in any way. The result is a show that does a brilliant job promoting what makes F1: Off-the-track drama.
Formula 1 is basically WWE for rich Europeans. The races are hit or miss, but the politics and promos are the really engrossing stuff. If you watch an F1 race without any knowledge of its inner workings, it might not seem that interesting. But when you understand the behind-the-scenes ramifications of a result, a pass for 10th place can feel as important as a pass for first.
The show’s format lets viewers into this world by focusing on the narrative arcs of individual characters and teams, rather than telling a chronological story. And though the show jumps around the calendar, it isn’t misleading or confusing. I imagine this was a difficult choice for the producers, but they got it right.
Most importantly for the show’s purposes, F1 is also involved in the production, so it also works as an advertisement. Viewers are left with an understanding of multiple storylines and who to root for in 2020. I think it would be hard to come away from the show without wanting to follow a team or driver in the upcoming season.
It’s so painful when you know what’s coming
If you did not follow the 2019 F1 season, you will have a different experience watching this show than I did. But if you did follow along last season, you’ll find yourself saying “oh noooo” at the screen several times just before the big reveals.
The results of storylines involving drivers like Pierre Gasly and Niko Hulkeberg, and teams like Haas and Williams, are foreshadowed well in advance. The portions covering the deaths of Niki Lauda and Anthoine Hubert are probably more serious tearjerkers when you see them coming.
If you didn’t follow F1 last year and watch the show, let me know if the foreshadowing was obvious to you. I’m very curious.
Guenther Steiner is once again the best character
The breakout star of the first season of Drive to Survive was Haas team principal Guenther Steiner, a hilarious character who curses at his drivers and staff in ways that American football coaches would envy. English is not his first language, but he’s an artist with the f-word.
Steiner’s home life is presented in stark contrast to the way he acts on the track. He’s very calm and kind with his wife and daughter, and is presented as a loving husband and father.
But then he has to go to work and deal with the mistake-riddled work of his engineers and drivers.
“This is not a fucking kindergarten here,” Steiner says to his staff at one point. Following a collision between Haas drivers Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen, Steiner delivers the best line of the series.
“Gene spends 100 fucking million dollars a year of his own fucking money,” Steiner says to his drivers, referring to team owner Gene Haas, “and wants to pull the plug and let everybody down because of two fucking idiots.”
Haas never really got better after that, but Steiner still has his job, as do Grosjean and Magnussen. Their owner has not pulled the plug, though he was unable to recruit a title sponsor to replace the ill-fated Rich Energy.
I have no idea how Haas will do in 2020, but I do know that Steiner will likely be the best character in Season 3 of the show, too.
I empathize so much with Claire Williams
Williams Formula One has won seven drivers’ world championships and nine constructors’ championships under the leadership of legendary founder Frank Williams. But their last honors came in 1997, and Frank’s daughter Claire has been tasked with turning the team around. Thus far, she has failed — Williams was by far the worst team on the grid in 2019 — and it’s impossible to tell if it’s because she can’t hack it, or because of circumstances beyond her control.
In the trailer for Season 1, Claire Williams said something that has stuck with me ever since I heard it: “Every day I break out in a cold sweat thinking, ‘do I have the skillset to do this?’”
This is something that I think a lot of women have felt at work. Plenty of men too, but this is disproportionately a female experience.
In Williams’ case specifically, she has reached the highest position of any woman in F1, an organization that has historically been outrageously chauvinistic. Her detractors will argue that she only has her job because of her father, and her supporters will argue that the most qualified and experienced team principal in the world couldn’t turn around Williams on F1’s lowest budget.
The show follows the Williams team as it fails to finish its car in time for preseason testing. Claire’s rage at director of engineering Paddy Lowe can be felt through the screen, even if she never raises her voice.
I’m not sure if she holds back because that’s not her personality, or because she feels like it would be deemed unacceptable for a woman to do so. When Steiner blows up and calls his subordinates “fucking idiots,” we all have a good laugh. I feel like the reaction would be a bit different if Claire Williams did the same.
“I don’t want to disgrace the Williams name,” Claire says in an interview. “I don’t want Williams to fall apart under my watch.” I wonder how often she feels powerless to prevent that from happening, even though she’s ostensibly in charge?
Leclerc vs. Vettel is the story in F1
In 2020, all eyes are going to be on Ferrari.
Last season, youngster Charles Leclerc signed on to represent F1’s most iconic brand. He knew he’d be a clear No. 2 driver behind four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel. But as the season wore on, the pecking order got a lot less clear. As it turns out, Leclerc might be the better driver.
Vettel’s last world championship was in 2013, with Red Bull. He left for Ferrari when he felt like his old team was falling miles behind Mercedes, but he hasn’t been able to recapture his championship form in the famous red car. Following a couple of second-place finishes and preseason hype that he could challenge Lewis Hamilton, Vettel disappointed in 2019, finishing fifth.
Leclerc, meanwhile, exceeded expectations in his first year with Ferrari. Despite Vettel being given preferential strategy in multiple races — a huge point of contention that’s explored on the show — Leclerc outperformed his teammate. His win in Ferrari’s home race at the Italian Grand Prix was arguably the feel-good moment of the year, and he out-qualified Vettel on a regular basis. His fourth-place finish in the drivers’ championship, ahead of Vettel, suggests he should not have to defer to the veteran anymore.
But F1 is not just about who is better at driving. It is a competition that is equal parts skill, engineering and politics. And though Leclerc may be a better driver than Vettel, he’s no politician. Whenever he complains about fairness on the show, Vettel finds a way to take advantage of Leclerc’s naiveté.
However, that’s the only thing Vettel did better than Leclerc in 2019. If all things are equal, Ferrari is going to start siding with the younger driver sooner rather than later.
Drive to Survive sets up 2020 perfectly as the end of an era
This upcoming season is the last with unlimited spending, and most of the drivers will be out of a contract at the end of the campaign. There will be new car requirements for 2021 as well. For this reason, a lot of teams are treading water this season, putting their money into new facilities and preparing for when they are finally able to compete with Mercedes, the runaway leaders, in 2021.
It feels likely that this season will be a ceremonial victory lap for Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes before things get tough in 2021. If the two championships are the only things that interest you, I regret to inform you that this F1 campaign is unlikely to be compelling. But in terms of long-term storylines and interpersonal drama, this is going to be one of the wildest seasons in the sport’s history.
Everyone is fighting for their livelihoods. No one’s job is secure. A great midfield performance could position a driver for world championship contention next season. George Russell will struggle to score a single point for Williams, but he’s still trying to prove he’s ready to follow in Hamilton’s footsteps at Mercedes.
The drivers’ and constructors’ championships might not be up for grabs in 2020, but the future of the sport is.

Tumblr media
My freelance business – Morgan Online Marketing (or MOM for short) – turned 5-years-old on Monday, as I officially took the plunge and went full-time freelance on Tuesday 7th May 2013, having left my last agency role the previous Friday. I celebrated with branded gluten-free cupcakes, like the one pictured. Yum. When you’re self-employed, you sometimes hear that infamous “ of businesses die in their first 5 years” statistic, which seems to vary depending on who you ask (it’s anything from 20 to 50 apparently), so I’m chuffed to have passed (survived?) this particular milestone. I’ve posted on anniversaries before (here’s the links to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years), but this time I just wanted to say a few thank you’s to people who have helped me along the way. Thank You’s In (sort of?) chronological order… Firstly, thank you to Max Minzer of Max Impact. As I was in the process of going solo, he produced some videos as part of his Max Impact series (a weekly series of Google+ Hangouts webinars, each covering different SEO/digital marketing topics) and the Choosing Clients one was massively useful. A big thank you to Lauren Hall-Stigerts and Mackenzie Fogelson for the advice that they dropped in that one. See also: Building an SEO Practice with Bill Sebald (another good one). Thank you to GO Wales. Although I’ve never utilised them in the way that most people have (either by being a graduate getting a job, or an employer getting funding towards a hire), they also used to run Freelancer Academies, week-long workshops that gave you an intro to freelancing life. I was very lucky to go on one in my second week as a freelancer. It was extremely useful so early on. A mahoosive thank you to Welsh ICE, which I joined within a month or two of going solo. All I was seeking was a business address, a desk, some coffee and WiFi – but I got so, so much more. The community up there is incredible. These aren’t just coworkers and fellow business owners – they’ve become good friends. Gareth obviously gets a mention because he introduced me to the place, but the current team (Jamie, Rachel, Huw and Llinos) are amazing. Thank you to Nichola Stott, MD of Erudite (formerly known as theMediaFlow). At a brightonSEO years ago, she offered one-to-one sessions giving advice to people looking to go freelance or start an agency. Despite not booking a slot officially, she was still happy to see me, and gave me some really critical advice about closing sales (which I still implement today). Thank you to State of Digital – to Russell O’Sullivan for suggesting me as a contributor, to Barry Adams for being my (extremely patient and supportive) editor, and to Bas van den Beld for running the show. It’s been great writing for the site. A big thank you to George Savva, my business coach. We met waaay back in 2010 at a networking event (back in my employee-at-an-agency days), and then years later I found out from someone that he offered one-to-one business coaching sessions, which I jumped at instantly. The advice he’s offered to me over the years has been brilliant. Thank you to my locally-based SEO buddies and former colleagues Andrew Isidoro and Ceri Harris, who I used to grab a beer with every now and again as a catch-up – which sort of inspired the idea for (and evolved into) Cardiff SEO Meet. While I’m on the subject, a big thank you to Kelvin Newman of brightonSEO and Mark Scully of Learn Inbound for offering me really useful advice over the years. It goes without saying that my parents – Bernard & Marilyn – deserve a shout-out… perhaps the biggest one. Running multiple successful businesses – including Computer Recruiter and LosLocosBeach.com – they have had an enormous influence on me, and were (and still are) extremely supportive towards me deciding to join them in the exciting yet terrifying world of self-employment. Thank you so much. I’ve likely forgotten a ton of people to add to this – apologies if so. So many have helped me on my journey. Thank you all. What’s next? So what’s next for me and MOM? Well… MOM’s gonna continue (obvs), Cardiff SEO Meet is back, and becoming a more regular event (read more here), I can’t say too much at this stage, but I might be becoming a mentor to fledgling freelancers – I can reveal more once it’s official, I also want to write a book offering sales advice to freelancers who don’t like sales (like me), inspired by this old post I wrote offering sales tips for quiet periods, Oh and I’m going to MozCon 2018 in Seattle in July, as I actually bloody won the competition, based on my submission! Here’s to another 5 years I guess…!

F1 Re-Watch 2022: Round 14 - Belgium
So I remember sweet f all from Spa, bc I’m pretty sure that was around the time of both family stress, and my parents catching covid, so this and the next two races are total blanks to me bc I was both not on tumblr much and didn’t watch any of Channel 4 highlights.
(I mean I’m also running on the assumption that Verstappen won bc that’s almost all he did last year).
So let’s just jump in and hope Seb and Lewis had a somewhat fun time
I am highkey dreading this race, Zandvoort and Monza bc I have NO IDEA what happened so like these combined could be six hours I never get back
at least Seb looks pretty in the intro
As I also watched Spa 2021 I’m glad I have context for whatever that race was.
ANYWAY, starting grid:
Mick P19 :(
why the fuck is Charles in 15th????
NICKY P11, GOATIFI
Seb and Lance top 10 😭🙌
how on Earth did Alex get 6th in quali?! (I mean, the ultimate good for him, but HOW?!)
I’m really going to have to start looking up quali results before I press play to avoid all this whiplash bc I didn’t even notice Sainz on pole aovhaeog
[Start/Lap 1]: Perez almost driving into Alonso at the start aegehg
“A brilliant start from Sebastian Vettel” THAT’S MY BOYYYYYYYYY
oh fuck me Lewis on Fernando violence
so Lewis does not have a fun time in this race then 😭
The racing gods giveth (Seb up into P5) and the racing gods stab you in the chest (Lewis DNF)
[Lap 2]: The way you can literally see the Ferrari bouncing up and down the straight. Yikes.
NICKY NO don’t take out Val like that
cut to a solitary Lewis by his car. Does not spark any joy.
Thank fuck we have a replay bc WHAT WERE THOSE TWO LAPS?!
Seb’s start was bloody gorgeous though. KING SHIT.
but yeah... no F1 car should be flung up into the air like that with any kind of contact.
Oh not even Lance and Seb being violent on the first lap. Everyone left their braincells at home it seems.
[Lap 4]: Charles making his first pit stop bc pain I guess????
Seb being in 5th is the race’s only saving grace rn
...there was a tear off in one of Charles’ front breaks is2g I’ll start causing violence next
right safety car coming in, I paused to grab some chocolate for emotional support snacking.
oh boy Charles doing his own strategy calls and you know what I trust him more than the Ferrari pitwall
[Lap 5]: Perez v Russell v Alonso. I AM IN DISTRESS
“Then comes Sebastian Vettel” INJECT IT INTO MY VEINS
I mean he’s just there in P5 vibing but GO ON SEB!!!
Verstappen already into P6 after starting 14th
oh no don’t cut to a solitary Lewis I’m sad again
[Lap 6]: ALEX??? PASSING A McLAREN????
What is going on in the House of Commons
Seb drops to P6
[Lap 7]: Jesus that shot of Verstappen closing on Alonso really shows how strong the RB18 was last year.
“We are for Plan B” Please... I’m not strong enough I am already at my limit 😭
[Lap 8]: Verstappen already into P3. If I speak.
also my emotional support chocolate had been devoured.
Charles passing Gasly at the bus stop chicane? Nice.
[Lap 10]: Okay I think the race has finally settled down now, apart from Charles making his way up through the field
I’m still this close to asking for a refund though
Clinging onto Seb in P6 and Lance in P9 with both hands rn
cut to Jacky Ickx, watch Ferrari disrespect his presence with more clownery
[Lap 11]: Ignoring potential RBR team orders and focusing on Seb being almost a second behind Alonso
oop Sainz pits, tbf comms have been talking about high tracks temps so no wonder people are complaining about high deg
[Lap 13]: Oh Verstappen got past Perez.
anyway, Charles up to P6!!
“Could George Russell undercut Perez” oh I hope so I’ll take anything at this point
Seb also pits, it was slow 😭
[Lap 15]: Charles being a little bit unhinged trying to get past Perez, I support his right to go feral
“We are considering Plan D” I WILL BURN DOWN MARANELLO
No, I’m not kidding. I’ll call it a belated Ides of March.
Russell v Charles 👀
whew he actually got past on the kemmel straight!
George said I’ll avenge Lewis by dragging the W13 places it doesn’t deserve to be
[Lap 17]: SEB INTO P8!!! LET’S GET IT
I’m also acknowledging Ferrari putting Charles on Plan D and moving on
MICK PASSING NICKY UP EAU ROUGE!!! A KING!!!!
[Lap 18]: ...and Verstappen retakes the lead
“Hasta la Vista Carlos” eafuvhefuawh okay Brundle I’ll give you that one right it was funny
oh Seb is on the hards. I do not know how to feel about that.
[Lap 19]: Alpha Tauri finally remember to pit Yuki
“Why would we stop now” A very good question Charles, you tell em
[Lap 21]: I’m actually glad Seb is holding the gap to Alonso ahead bc I still haven’t recovered from the first lap
And Perez passes Sainz like he’s just taking a stroll
oooh Lance passes Galy round the outside of the the chicane for P11, noice
[Lap 23]: It’s me I’m the unimpressed McLaren garage
also thank fuck we’re past half-distance
Lance v Dan up Eau Rouge??? BOYS THINK OF MY NERVES
[Lap 25]: Seb watch: he has really closed up to Alonso, I’m stress
[Lap 26]: oh looks like we’re gonna get another pitstop shuffle *cue Disco music*
oh fuck Ferrari are double stacking
okay it wasn’t awful
[Lap 28]: Oh dear potential Canadian on Canadian violence.
Anyway Seb’s in P5 so I think we should end the race and call it a day
[Lap 31]: Charles closing up to Seb, my Ferrari boys 😭
oh and here we are with a Charles onboard
not surprising that was an easy pass, nice to see my lads briefly reunited though
[Lap 33]: Russell hunting Sainz for sport, gap down to just over 4 seconds
[Lap 34]: Seb pits, he couldn’t make the 1 stop work I guess 😔
but still in the poinnnnnnnnnnts!!!!!
[Lap 35]: and he passes Gasly for P7!!!!
oh shit he got double French tag teamed
asdfghjkl Ocon with the double slipstream, maximum zoom
[Lap 36]: Sainz v Russell watch: gap down to under 3 seconds
oh jeez not Brundle calling the Merc a Williams asvhauvhuhu
[Lap 37]: a 4 car battle for P10 you say? 👀
Midfield spice (beloved)
[Lap 38] I can’t believe it took this long to make reference to the Great Contract Drama of Summer Break 2022. I may have been tuned out of a lot of the races last year but boy was last Summer Break the most hilarious
“It’s too late for Plan G” McLaren???? Don’t take lessons from Ferrari I BEG
[Lap 39]: Alex having the best time being a train conductor as he clings onto P10. Pet power!!
[Lap 40]: I’m still trying to get my head around Verstappen going from P14 to P1 in the dry like ?????
Like yes I will acknowledge that Verstappen is a good driver, but jeez man
[Lap 42]: ANYWAY, Seb still in P8, please Spa give me something in the way of joy
Sainz v Russell watch: gap holding at 2 seconds so I think Ferrari are going to escape Spa with a podium
and cut to a replay of Yuki passing Zhou before the bus stop chicane
[Lap 43]: I was about to question why they were pitting Leclerc, but it’s to try and get fastest lap.
oh jeez but Alonso is right there.
And he passes Charles. Clowneria Ferrari strikes again.
There is not a big enough facepalm emoji.
[Lap 44/Finish]: oh phew Charles got past Alonso on the Kemmel straight
and Sainz holds onto P3. Props to George for trying though.
Charles didn’t even get fastest lap. And he got a 5 sec penalty for speeding in the pitlane so he drops to P6 🥲
but anyway SEB POINTS!!!!!!!!!! WE LOVE TO SEE IT!!!!!
Seb finished in P8 and nothing else happened idk what any of you are talking about.
Ugh yeah I’m trying to not let my personal attachment to some drivers affect my thought on the race but... oof my friends. This didn’t spark that much joy. Granted, there was a somewhat decent amount of action, but the first two laps were not fun to watch. So I’ll give it a tentative 6 front wings out of 10. Next race - Zandvoort!

In DC’s Jetsons, Rosie the Robot’s Origin Is Unexpectedly Poignant
DC Comics dropped a surprising bombshell in its “Jetsons” back-up feature, which ran in the latter half of the “Flintstones/Booster Gold” DC/Hanna-Barbera crossover comic. The 8-page story depicts a more dramatic, almost sad vision of the future, managing to reshape “The Jetsons” for a modern audience, much in the way “The Flintstones” comic has under Mark Russell and Steve Pugh.
RELATED: Heavens To Murgatroyd, DC Comics’ Snagglepuss Is Remarkably Relevant
The issue adds an element to “Jetsons” lore that, really, we doubt many people had even considered before: a defintiive origin for Rosie the Robot, a tale that plays sort of like a “Twilight Zone” episode with its emotional twist. And in presenting this story, the back-up sets up a more thoughtful version of the Jetsons as a whole, one that comments on modern society and our relationship to life and death.
The story, from writers Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Pier Brito, sets up the world of DC’s reinvigorated version of “The Jetsons” briskly, introducing — almost as rhythmically as the original “Jetsons” intro — George, Elroy, Judy and Jane. We get a sense of the sprawling world, packed with hover-cars, funky hairdos and futuristic slang, and even get a taste of the world’s origin; at some point in their past and our future, the Earth flooded, forcing humans to live above sea-level in their mid-air floating homes. Rather than depicting the future as an optimistic place, the issue sets up a world where people wouldn’t be able to survive on ground- (or sea-)level. There’s a deeply sad, almost disturbing element to this story. Yes, mankind escaped extinction, but do people even belong on Earth anymore? If we need to rely so heavily on technology, do humans deserve to stick around?
Apart from establishing these important background details, the back-up primarily focuses on a character we never saw in the original animated series: Rosemary Jetson, George’s dying mother.
RELATED: DC’s Heroes & Hanna-Barbera Creations to Crossover in March Annuals
The first few pages establish that Judy is secretly seeing her grandmother in 124-year-old woman’s final moments. The process, which will trasnfer her consciousness into some sort of machine, is deemed “better” than life. That’s right — storing your memories on a hard drive somewhere is considered superior to the daily pain of mortality, at least in the world of DC’s “Jetsons.” As technology now renders death irrelevant, it poses two major questions to the reader: What is the value of life if we never truly die? And do our memories — whether they be chronicled in photos, video or on social media — make us who we are?
Managing to pack a lot of emotion into very few panels, Conner and Palmiotti establish a strong bond between Judy and her grandmother, showing us how close they are, and how aging is a horrific experience, even in the distant future. Despite Rosemary’s ability to live on as a machine, she feels a deep sadness as she leaves her mortal body. However, it’s her choice: Rosemary wants to die and relegate her memories to technology. She chooses technology over life, an idea which is sadly relatable even now, in the 21st century.
RELATED: DC’s “The Flintstones” Is a Surprisingly Dark — and Honest — Satire
One important aspect of the issue that rings true is the timelessness of grief. Even with the prospect of having her grandmother live on through a machine, Judy is devastated by her grandmother’s choice. She warns her of the risk — that one in ten consciousness transfers are not successful — but Rosemary decides to move forward with it anyway. The moment is heavy, and plays almost like an assisted suicide case, remarkably dark and harrowing.
George and Jane, who have been wondering where their daughter is, eventually discover her location thanks to the use of a tracking device that the two debate using. There’s a real sense of privacy invasion in this issue — it’s creepy, and almost feels like a comment on modern-day data-mining. George and Jane debate looking at Jane’s diary, even. (It seems helicopter parents still exist in the future…)
When they arrive, just too late, George and Jane learn that Rosemary has already passed away. It’s then revealed where exactly Rosemary’s consciousness was being transferred — into a robot. What robot would that be? Well, none other than an XB-500, a.k.a. the robot maid longtime “Jetsons” fans know as…
Rosie the Robot.
Having Rosie bear the consciousness of a 124-year-old woman is the perfect decision for a modern “Jetsons” take. It takes a rather silly character from the show, and adds a whole new dramatic depth, creating opportunity for plenty of stories down the road. It also leaves us to wonder: Can Rosie ever die? Or, perhaps more importantly, can anyone?
“The Jetsons” saga from Conner, Palmiotti and Brito will continue when DC Comics launches the new series later in 2017.

George Russell - We Don’t Have To Dance I.
Tumblr media
In January I made a half ready au for something really outside Formula racing. Back then I was watching quite a bit of rally races before starting the F1 season off. Now I rewrote it as a George oneshot - which won’t stay a ONEshot - and finished it up. Sadly, this won’t be dripping from fluff just yet. Maybe there’s a chance for a happy end, but I didn’t decide on it yet 😂 Hope everyone will like it 🧡 (I accidentally deleted the previous post, so I’m just reposting it now again🤦‍♀️)
TW: car crash, injuries (not explicit but still, be careful) Title song is by Andy Black
Masterlist | Taglist/Queue | Request
" Welcome, everyone. Today will be quite a busy lobby as we have lots of people playing with us today. " He started his usual intro by describing what they will be doing. People were still arriving, but they had time until the first game would start.
Luckily streams like these were only chaotic in a funny way, making everything hilarious and ten times better. Just as the first notifications started coming in, he had to make sure the race's stream was still visible next to the other page. Then he could finally look at the incoming messages while they were waiting for the others to get ready. The first question made George realise he missed out important info from his intro.
" Hana isn't playing with us today. I almost forgot to tell you guys. I'm sorry in advance, but I will be quite distracted today. She is racing today, and the stream is open on my other screen. " He let out a laugh, already anticipating all the emojis and dripping comments about him and Johanna. " I usually put my off-days around her racing days, but it's a tournament, and I would have missed the whole week if I followed my usual plan for days like this. " He added, so they understood why today is like this. He had just a few streaming days planned every week during their off season, which always collided with Hana’s rally season, but luckily he could always play around with the schedule.
He hated not fully being there for his viewers, but at the same time, he wanted to support his girlfriend even when he couldn't travel there with her. Sometimes he could travel with her during his off-season but usually his training held George back, as he couldn’t miss them. It was the second-best way to get all the info of her racing in just seconds after the real events. Sadly the stream wasn't just about her, but as someone with a known name in the group, fortunately, they were showing her car quite frequently. By the time they went live, she already started and was on the first third of the track, completing that part in the perfect time, as she usually does. For a second, he just stared at the other screen as they were showing their inside cam but then had to focus back as they were starting the round in their game.
Luckily he manages the multitasking, mostly focusing on their game and trying to win, while catching every second they were showing Hana's car or maybe talking about her and how they're doing. He maybe lost a round because of an announcement about her time, but one game won't kill anyone, will it? In the first break, he retweeted a clip that was shared of her speeding down a straight, making him feel proud inside as they were saying no one has a chance against her. It always felt unreal how good she was in her category and how well they always talked about her. It was something that made him feel strangely proud, even though he had nothing to do with her skills. Everything she achieved was hers and no one else's, no matter what the haters would say. Her formula racing career may have ended early, but George was quite sure that she felt a lot more comfortable in the world of rally. After the first few bumps in the road, Hana found her place and style, getting her car onto the top half of the leaderboard every race.
The moment they start another round is when he hears the panicked voices in his headset, although lower than anything else. As soon as he looks at the stream, he sees the playback of a light blue car slipping on the road and flipping up in the air before hitting the ground with full force and starting to flip through the field until it finally comes to a stop as it hits a tree with Hana's door, the car staying on its roof. He waits for a second, hoping they will play the inside cam but as they don't include it, he knows there's probably a lot more to the crash than just a broken car. There are unmissable flames on the underside, but they switch to another driver just before he can see the marshalls getting to them and probably trying to get the team out before the fire consumes the frame of the vehicle and everything else inside of it.
" Fuck... " He doesn't even care about his own stream anymore, getting up and closing everything. As soon as the computer starts shutting off, he shoots out of the room. His phone in his hand already as there is an incoming call from Martha, his girlfriend's mother. " I just saw it, what's going on? " He spoke rushed, wanting to know everything that was said to them.
" They won't show anything, but the boss said they got them out just before it went up in flames. She was conscious but fainted as they took them to the ambulance. " Hana's mother was most likely in a full-fledged panic attack, and George could hear that they were packing in the background.
" I will get a ticket as soon as possible. I don't know when I'm getting there. " George sighed while pulling out a duffle bag to fill it with clothes for several days if needed. He didn't know how dangerous her condition was, and how many days they were spending there.
" It's okay. I will send you all the info when we get it finally. They will probably take them to the hospital. I just don't know which one, yet. Fucking hell. " It was the first time George ever heard her curse, but he didn't have the time to be surprised about it. More like it made him even more panicked as he knew the situation is probably worse than he anticipated.
He couldn't even push the phone into his pocket before another call came in from Alex. He knew they were probably puzzled about his disappearance, but he wanted to finish packing before talking to them. When he was in a taxi finally, on the way to the airport, he pulled it out of his jacket and dialled Alex's number.
" Hey, sorry for not answering. I just had to rush out of the house to the airport. Hana had a horrific crash. " He sighed, feeling as his body finally realised what's happening and started to stiffen up from the stress.
" Jesus Christ. Right. Just go, stay safe. I just wanted to ask if everything is okay, but fuck, didn't think it was this bad. " Alex mumbled out, and all the sounds were audible from the background as the others probably heard George's answer.
" She did a pretty high flip. They said she fainted just as they got to safety, so at least she's still alive. I don't think I would be if I have been the one inside. Man, I don't know what will happen. " The sentence was cut off by a choking sound as his throat tightened up at the idea of anything happening to Johanna.
" Hey, George. You know her. You know how fucking tough she is. Today's event won't be the one that stops her. Not even if she's injured. Don't even think about that as a possibility, because it isn't one. " He tried to reassure his friend, although he felt that it was almost useless. Without any real info about her condition, it's all up in the air and unstable. " The most important thing right now is for you to get there in one piece. You won't be of help if you fall apart. Her parents need you there. " He added with a sigh before saying goodbye and putting down the call so George can make the important ones towards Hana's friends and colleagues. It isn't easy but has to be done, as he knows her parents will be on their way to the hospital to be next to her, and won't be able to call everyone.
When he got to the airport, there was a ticket there already, waiting for him to pick up. It was a surprise, but a lovely one, as it saved him some time and stress before getting on the plane and starting his journey to Germany. He was sure he would have missed the first available flight if he had to buy it himself, but Hana's manager had the authority to get it for him in time. He made a note in his head to thank him for it when they met, as it wasn't something he had to do but decided to help George with it. As he had time on his hands, he tried to relax, although all the images in his head didn't let him sleep or anything. It was strange to see everyone so nonchalant about life while he was fearing for someone so much he was on the verge of throwing up the whole time. But he knew they were not horrible people, just that they didn't know what happened. They didn't have to know about everyone else's pain and life events. It was strange but completely normal.
As he knew he wouldn't be able to rest, he opened up his phone and went onto Twitter to see the news. Although there was nothing new on the tournament's page, Hana's team shared that she's on the way to hospital with injuries but nothing life threatening. It should have made him calm down, but as he thought how many small things can turn into huge problems, it didn't help. There were people, probably viewers and subscribers tweeting at him, sharing photos and thoughts with him, hoping Johanna is okay and healthy even though it was a nasty crash. The pictures of the wreck the car became, made all the good news unbelievable as he just couldn't understand how someone could get out of it without any injuries. He knew that her team wouldn't be lying and that they would have called him if there's anything he needs to know, but it was just all too much for his brain. He thought about putting out a tweet so everyone knew what was happening, but decided against it. Everyone knew already as they probably followed Hana's racing account and her team's one. He didn't need to put out everything and he didn't really feel like receiving even more messages than he already did. He knew they just wanted to let him know they were thinking about them, it wasn't good to see all of this 24/7. It was enough that he knew what was happening, he didn't need others to remind him every minute of the coming days.
' She's in theatre now, fractured leg and two broken ribs. They said she will need some days under anaesthesia to fully heal without the stress of the pain she will feel as soon as she wakes up. If everything goes as it should she will be out in an hour or so. We will get you a hotel room by the time you arrive, as our house is hours away from the hospital and I think we all want to be closer now. I'll send you the address of the hospital in a second. ' Came the awaited text from Martha, making him sigh out and save the address as soon as he got it, so he won't forget where he has to go after he arrives in the country. He remembered to send a message to the group, as they were people who deserved to know all the info. They were great friends of Hana and were probably pretty nervous about her state. They deserved to know.
It took him almost 20 hours to finally arrive and be able to get his baggage back. He first went to the hotel so he can put his stuff down before meeting up with Johanna's parents, so they can go to the hospital together. They had two rooms next to each other, so as soon as he had a shower and changed into fresh clothes, he went outside and knocked on their door.
" Hello! Are you okay? " He asked when the door opened, and he could see the worry on Martha's face.
" As much as you can be after something like this. " Martha let out a sigh, hugging George as he stepped closer. " They just called that she responded quite well to the medication. Her operated leg looks good too, although it was quite hard to fix in the surgeon's opinion. " She let go of him so they could leave for the hospital and finally really talk with the doctors that were part of the team caring for her.
" Is Andrew there already? " George asked while Michael locked up their door so they could head to the elevator.
" Yes. Theo wasn’t in need of medical care. Right after he was checked out by the doctor, they let him home. He and Andrew stayed. They wanted her to have someone while we were travelling here. " She nodded, pushing the first button inside, as it would take them down to the reception. " We got our car, so we won't have to call a taxi all the time. " She added, pulling out the keys from her purse, giving them to George as he was deemed the most put together to drive among the three of them.
" He was quite lucky if he's uninjured. " He let out a huff of air, feeling strange that while Hana was hurt, her co-driver walked away perfectly fine and without a scratch. Life took strange turns sometimes.
" Most of the damage was on Johanna's side. He's got a sore neck and back, but that's all. " She sighed, not saying more. She was probably blaming the navigator for her daughter's pain. In a situation like this no one could fault her for wanting someone to take the blame.
As they got down to the garage George opened up the car, and they all got inside. It was a 10 minutes long drive to the hospital and another 5 to find a parking spot not too far away from the entrance. Inside a nurse helped them find her room, but had to leave before they could ask any questions. She probably wouldn't have been able to answer them anyway, as she wasn't on her case. Although, looking at her and the huge cast on her leg answered most of their questions. She was asleep, as she was under anaesthesia to reduce the stress the pain would give her. At this point, George just hoped there wouldn't be any problems when they woke her up finally. They all knew that everything could change in 2-3 days, even though it looked perfect at the moment. Sitting down in the armchair he took out his phone to quickly text everyone, that they're finally at the hospital and in the room. He wanted to tell them more but could only type out that she looks okay, even though she was quite injured. Somehow the peace on her face made him calm down, even though he knew it was only from the drugs they gave her. It was nothing in connection with her being completely okay and perfectly healthy.
“ Family of Miss Braun, right? ” The german words made George turn towards the door, spotting a doctor who was the one taking care of Hana. Although his German wasn’t even close to perfect, he understood the question and nodded in synch with her parents. The following explanation of Johanna’s state was a bit too complicated for his basic knowledge, but George knew someone would eventually translate for him.
It took a minute or two before they told him that everything looked perfect on her charts, considering what her body went through. Although a relieved sigh left his body, everyone knew this wasn’t the end of the story. She will probably need rehabilitation after her leg heals, even if it’s a simple fracture and will heal easily. It didn’t help their worries that she was kept asleep for four days in the end, delaying the process and making them wait even longer before they got to talk to her. George hoped that with Hana awake they could get a bit more feedback for her treatment and also finally start the next part with physiotherapy. The sooner she got up and started moving around the easier it would be to get back to her previous physical fitness level. Everyone knew that laying around in a bed all day long didn’t help with staying fit and healthy.
George was in the middle of a meeting with the Williams engineers, sitting on his hotel bed, when he got the text that they would wake up Hana that day finally. Although he couldn’t just drop everything and leave for the hospital but made sure that their call finished as soon as possible, so he could get going. When he entered the hospital room she already had a bit more lively color but there was no sign of her being back to full consciousness yet. They were still inside the few hour window of the drugs finally working and didn’t really have to fear that something was going wrong. George was just sitting in the armchair next to the bed, legs pulled up and his fingers scrolling away on his phone while Hana’s mum was out for a coffee. Her dad couldn’t take off more time from work, but he was fine with the two of them looking after his daughter until he could visit in the late afternoons. The half-an-hour-checkups were slowly driving George crazy as the nurses never had answers, just took the data from the little screens and left with an understanding smile. It must have been between the 10th and 11th visit when they finally spotted a few movements, but it took another hour for her to finally open her eyes.
From the moment that she moved her arm for the first time George couldn’t get himself to sit back into the chair, rather opting for a walk down the hallway and then circling the room several times. Martha could only watch him pace but knew there weren’t any words that could help him calm down. They both knew they were finally getting closer to getting her back as much as they could in this moment of time, and it was nerve wracking to not have an exact time limit for it. It wasn’t surprising that he was the first one stepping next to hana’s bed when her eyes finally opened, with her mum arriving second. There were almost immediately several nurses and of course her main doctor stepping into the room, after being called through the installed button. While they tried not to overwhelm her they still had to run a few tests and George’s stomach turned at how scared Hana looked, before settling down at her mum’s gentle touch on her hand. They took their sweet time examining every little corner of her body and asking questions about her pain levels and just general state, leaving all of them tired from the stress and concentration when they finally finished everything up. There was only one nurse staying back to get some medication ready for Hana, when she could finally take a breather and look around the room. Seconds later her eyes finally reached George, and there was an evident smile getting onto her face.
“ Hello. ” Her voice was almost like music to his ears, after so many days of not being able to hear it, and George couldn’t help the relieved sigh that left his body.
“ Welcome back! ” He smiled down at her, squeezing her hand on the bed gently. He was still scared to use full force, after seeing how fragile the human body was actually. These were the few moments that made you realise you have no superpowers and that you’re not indestructible.
