i feel like the admins of facebook groups such as Wild Green Memes for Ecological Fiends and Entomemeology should start kicking out all the assholes who write stuff like "BURN IT WITH FIRE" under posts with interestingly weird animals...there are so many of them now..with no curiosity only morbid fascination and cruel dismissive comments...

🦋 Which character is your favorite to write?

Technically a no-brainer, I'd say Johnny? Because Johnny is me, but without the alcoholism and if he had some years to get over himself. I also have several band t-shirts and listen to classic rock 90% of the time.

But sometimes I'll get brainwaves for the kids, or Terry Silver (who's just fun because he's so affably evil lolol). I'd say they're all sort of okay except Daniel who I have to double check each time to see if his voice is okay.

Also in non-CK I think sometimes I have a decent bead on Charles Xavier from XMFC? But that comic has been stuck in notes for like. 2 months :')

I don't know about prefer, bc as we all know sometimes the story just takes you where it takes you? But I probably go for happy to ambiguous (but squint and its happy). I'm simple like that I guess.

How competitive was the copper market? Would Ea-Nasir have been one of many sellers of broadly equivalent status all trying to make a buck, like how one town might have six building firms all competing for work, or would he have had a near-monopoly like Starbucks? Would he have been a sole trader who brokered deals between mines and consumers, or would he have managed a warehouse with employees and held stock, etc?

This is a fantastic question! Just to flesh out the picture of the trade in the day: Bronze is an alloy of copper (Cu) with either arsenic (As) or tin (Sn). Arsenic is a common unwanted element in copper deposits, and copper-arsenic-oxide (Cu-As-O) minerals look very similar to plain copper minerals. However, tin (Sn) occurs in very different, rarer, geologic environments, and thus must be sourced from different areas.

Likewise, As-Bronze is less malleable than copper, but not by much; arsenic ions are about the same size. Tin ions form good bronze because they're larger than the copper ions and prevent the metal from freely deforming, so it was prioritized for weapons and tools. Arsenic was used when tin wasn't available.

Ur was known for being one of the best cities for bronzework during the Bronze Age: metalworking services were in high demand, and they were the center of the copper, arsenic, and tin trades. Copper from Oman (or Cyprus, as their industry was developing more at the time), tin from Afghanistan, Southeast Asia, or Turkey, (depending on which archaeologist you talk to), and arsenic from India or Egypt.

So yeah, as a middleman, Ea-Nasir probably had numerous competitors who procured copper from Oman, particularly from the halfway point in Qatar, and then sent it back to Ur. Also referencing the plural translation "-those of the people who travel to Dilmun-", although likely only a few of those merchants were chosen to sell to the temple/government. (But that's speculation. Maybe the temple picked one person a year? Maybe copper tithes meant there was usually supply, and it was only this year during war the temple picked Ea-Nasir to buy from.)

It's also quite possible there were people doing copper business like Ea-Nasir further up the Tigris and Euphrates closer to Cyprus, and there were definitely specialist merchants for arsenic-copper and tin procurement. Once the copper was in the city, his buyers were refiners and metallurgists who made the bronze or copper wares that were purchased/exported throughout the Middle East.

As for employees and stock, I honestly don't know. But from the letters, it sounds like he was stretched rather thin, and he was dealing with buyers' messengers himself. So I wouldn't be surprised (although this is speculation) if it was just him and perhaps a servant/slave of the period to handle things in Ur while he was in Dilmun.

It had been months, over ten actually, since the Swordsman had disappeared over the railing and into the dark, choppy water of the raging sea. They had avoided the initial strike of a storm because of Nami, but even she couldn't predict the geological anomalies that happened beneath the planet's surface. In a case of 'wrong place, wrong time,' the seafloor shifted and opened a deep trench. The opposing currents caused a whirlpool that jerked the ship off course. The wind surged and the ship listed dangerously.

Chopper's cry as he lost his grip was ear piercing, but stopped abruptly as the little doctor was caught by a strong arm. Zoro tried to adjust his grip on the rope that kept him on the deck, but the mixture of storm water and rope burn made it nearly impossible. He had to act quickly.

"COOK!" Thankfully, the blonde wasn't too far away. The two Wings briefly made eye contact before Chopper was tossed to the other man. Just in time as Zoro's grip gave way and he was dragged into the swirling water below. To this day, the railing was still cracked where it had been struck that night.

Janbon himself gave a heavy sigh. He didn't normally talk about business woes to customers, but this one eyed man always seemed to drag it out of him. What's boring you about the fandom? Sorry to hear you're struggling with that at the moment.

Just wanted to say though, it is normal to go through stages of fixation and ambivalence, especially if it feels like you might have plumbed the most exciting depths of your preferred niche. (I have felt like that so many times in other fandoms lol...) Maybe it's worth exploring other parts of the fandom, you might find something that ignites your passion again. Alternatively, if you need a break or feel the need to branch out, do it. The fandom will still be here when you feel like engaging again.

I'm not bored. I'm just having a severe "old man yells at cloud"-moment, like I do semi-regularly. 😉

When I came to the Tumblr-branch of Warhammer-fandom it felt so very exciting - artists and writers regularly got 80 to over 100 notes in a few days on their texts and pics (not just memes and/or shitposts, mind you! The real stuff!) - and not just likes, a lot of reblogs, comments and so much discussion! So many HC were developed here for everybody to see and to participate.

But this all changed. No fire nation, though.

I'm getting a bit tired of saying it over and over myself, but in my opinion it still is true: Discord is slowly killing fandom-permanence. Discord isn't good for conserving things. Ideas vanish. Pics get consumed like fast food and digested just as fast, leaving no nutritional value for viewer or artist. Thoughts get lost, because they wander down the chat-drain and vanish into nothing. HCs get no engagement, fade and die.

The slow, ugly decay of Twitter didn't help. A lot of new people not getting how Tumblr is supposed to be played and take the easy way out to Discord, too.

A Tumblr-blog is a very intimate showcase of a person's journey as a fan. It's like a geological slice of their interests and thoughts. I love that. I want to keep that. I want to get to know other fans. And not the shallow, fleeting way of Discord.

Yeah, as I said - old man yells at totally uncaring cloud. I can't stop time. I have to adapt or remain behind.

And the other thing is my "ceterum censeo" of being bitter about people just paying attention to Primarch-content and don't care about the guys from second row who are in my opinion so much more interesting and colourful. And if they get the spotlight it's just some meme-shit or being waifu'd to hell and back.

I love being silly about characters I like. I love making up shitty sidestories, silly AUs and other absolutely hilarious OOC-stuff. But if that's all that remains from a character, that's just sad.

I need way more Credible Hulks who love quoting the books as much as I do, around me!

But anyways, I'll come around.

I’ve seen some Big Stuff being reported via The Meme™️, but haven’t seen specific/region-based stuff (if you’ve rebloged before, apologies for missing those posts). Have any good recs?

As noted in past kitten memes, the abyssal plain is the largest biome on earth. The abyssal plain is the true "bottom" of the ocean (beaten only by the hadal zone, the deep ocean trenches that cut beyond the depths of the plain), the areas where the water is so still, so dark, that erosion and shaping of sediment doesn't happen short term or long term. The plain is covered in a fine layer of silt, settling in an even, flat layer. The abyssal plain is also the most topologically flat and consistent surface on our planet.

Long ago, it was thought that the depths of the ocean beyond where light reached had sparse, incidental life. Islands exist- hydrothermal vents with chemotaxic bacteria, seamounts with deep reefs that collect particles from the rest of the ocean- but the abyssal plain, for the most part, lacks producers, anything that is able to make energy-containing biomolecules from non-biological components.

But surrounding them.... fine sediment. flat layers. A rain of detritus from the layers above. And most of all... blackness.

There are wanderers here. Animals scouring the sand and drifting through the deepest layers of the ocean, sifting through the rain of marine snow, never knowing the light.

They search, scouring the depths for something more than the usual scraps. Whether it is as small as one measly fish carcass, or as huge an event as whalefall, most dead animals that dies in the ocean will ultimately be lain out for these wanderers, providing the mass and energy that once composed them to the undercurrent of our planet.

The largest of these wanderers are the sleeper sharks, and similar sharks that occupy their same niche (such as sixgill sharks). Not only are they the largest wanderers of the abyssal plain (excluding some squid, depending on how you count their habitat and their size), they are among the largest sharks in the world. They rival great whites in size, and it is likely only a lack of sampling that means we haven't found a sleeper shark larger than the largest great whites. When death brings animals to the plains, the sharks greet them, and bring their bodies into this black, serene food web.

Scavengers, of course, are not unique. Vultures fight over carcasses, fungi grow on logs and carcasses, even starfish in shallower waters scour fish bones clean. Yet the abyssal plain stands out for several reasons. At first glance, it seems like a biome that is seemingly sustained by death occurring in other habitats, allowing the discarded dead matter of other ecosystems to creep back upwards through various organisms ever so slowly.

Yet that's not quite why the abyssal plain feels the way it does. Other instances of scavenging feel so... transient. Watching fungal fuzz grow and die, watching vultures circle and dissipate, watching a fruit decompose on the ground. And then that energy is immediately returned to the web it came from- vultures live and die quickly, insects scour the lichens and fuzzes, rotting flesh becomes soil and dead matter for all sorts of organisms.

The abyssal plain is often slower, and more permanent. Purely soft tissue scavenging of whalefalls can last over a year, tissue attached to the bone is scoured for up to several years after that, and the bones themselves are gradually digested over the course of decades after that. The sediments of the plain itself barely move, undisturbed by shallower currents or the comings and goings of fast moving fish. Geologic forces slowly consume the plain into trenches, and slowly form it at ridges, but this process operates on inconceivably long timescales.

The abyssal plain of today was the abyssal plain of yesterday, and will be the abyssal plain of tomorrow.

This same invariance is represented in the sleeper sharks themselves. Greenland sharks, one of the best studied sleeper sharks (although that isn't saying much) have been aged at at the very least 250 years old. Potentially, these individuals have actually been 500 years old. Genetically over generations, there is little incentive to change either- the invariance of the abyssal plain means that there is little evolutionary selection pressure. In fact, fossil species in the same genus as modern sleeper sharks have been found in rocks nearly 30 million years old, and many older species and individuals are likely undiscovered.

When mammoths walked the land, these sharks fed on their carcasses. When megalodon prowled the seas above them, they finished the scraps it left behind. And who knows? Maybe when mosasaurs patrolled the seas, they were there to recycle their bodies as well. And when our children live and die, when whatever creatures come next to patrol the seas, their bodies will be returned to the plain as well.

The seeming omnipresence and consistency of this slow rhythm makes this the undercurrent of life. The constant in our earth's ecosystems. More than anything else, this relation to death is what defines existence for so much of life on earth, when considered as a sum of earth's history.

I enjoy the ocean. A lot. I enjoy the open ocean- looking over the continental shelf, peering over the reef wall, pelagic diving (when I can), freediving beyond what's visible from the surface. For many people, thallasophobia is a major fear, and that's valid. For me, there's always been an odd comfort associated with the ocean. A comfort knowing that at the bottom of it all, there is a different world. A world that could use the matter that makes me to slowly integrate into their own web of life before scattering to wander the seafloor again.

And that world is ruled by the eldritch giants that are the sleeper sharks.

Hello, my dear!!! I would love to hear about "Seeker, Prospector" for the director's cut meme. I think that's the first story of yours I read, and I adore it to this day. <3

I have to start out by admitting that I tried to find the original document file for this fic and could only, bewilderingly, find a copy of it that had been edited to be PG-rated (certainly a director's cut, technically..) and was losing all hope of finding the original (cherishing, of course, the prime directive of AO3 to archive fics) WHEN, out of the mists of desperation, I opened a file so enigmatically titled "Codywan End of Day Treats.docx" and, lo and behold there was the original (E-rated) Seeker, Prospector, paired within the same doc with Leaning Closer to Never. What an awful peek behind the curtain. The file has now been renamed.

The process behind the fic itself is that it was, as I've re-discovered, a writing treat for the end of the day, that grew legs and an entire body and resulted in a lot of extraneous research. I grew up with family in Alberta, and thought: haha, of all places to set a codywan fic, why not? And then yeah, it became an increasingly viable setting as the fic went on. I think because it was just supposed to be a fun writing prompt I didn't think much about pairing a paleontologist with whatever cody is. However, I do remember particularly thinking about experimenting with really unsubtle imagery/descriptors: oceans and rocks, fluidity and stability, change and stasis. Fortunately, both characters ended up with bits of both sides of these: cody is constantly moving but stuck in a cycle, obi-wan is in a stable position but has open-ended life plans (even the setting itself falls into this theme with its geological and social history). It ended up quite nice to think about, which is probably why I had to run after it to keep writing.

The research appendix is also because I'm a monster, and if I write down the notes anyways then I might as well include them. I also get feedback that they are enjoyable after the fic, like an academic dessert, which is nice :)

Finally, the actual start. Umeko starts off with her small pile of supplies, in... the middle of a volcanic caldera. I did pick this map in particular for that. I mean, just look at it. This would be a sick fucking spot to make a giant base. Thanks, Geological Landforms.

We aren't gonna be making a giant base, though. Thanks to her nomad ways, Umeko can only stay here for ~15 days before she starts getting antsy. She follows the ideoligion of Free-Scrapping. In addition to the expected stuff that comes with these memes, I also added the precepts that make her hate mechs and insects. You would too, if they were killing people and humanity was going extinct.

So, her near-future goals are something like this:

Scavenge some food, obviously. We want to make those packaged survival meals last as long as possible, because otherwise, until we research pemmican, any other food she gets will spoil in 2-3 days on the road.

Set up a bedroom. Fortunately this map (as are most Real Ruins ones) is covered in ruined bedrooms, so that will should be pretty quick.

Set up a stockpile so the few belongings she has don't deteriorate outside.

Poke around the nearby buildings for any light, portable valuables she can use as trade goods if she happens to meet somebody. Or better yet, anything immediately useful.

Try to tame a mount/pack animal. Carry capacity and speed are absolutely vital for this lifestyle. Unfortunately, with Animals 1, her list of taming options is pretty short, but she could still potentially tame a horse, alpaca, or donkey.

Practice crafting until she gets to Crafting 3 and can make a backpack. Again, carrying capacity.

Recruit a friend, because doubling the labor pool will help massively with all of this. Also, Shooting 4/Medical 3 is going to make fights a dicey proposition without somebody else to look after her if she gets roughed up.

Hades did feel awful, though he had been sure that it hadn't come through onto the surface. But it was hardly an unfamiliar feeling, he tried to simply ignore it so he could enjoy his book on geological controversies.

"Is that all you've come to say? Or should I prepare myself for more?" His tone continued in its monotony, as if uncaring of her words. But neither did he tell her to buzz off like he would others. She was his sister but still he felt to some degree she had the right to at least get a few more in before he told her to leave. Still he owed her that, even if things were better between them than before.
